TV Recap: So You Think You Can Dance - Top 14 Results While last night’s performance episode of So You Think You Can Dance delivered a classical ballet performance, an alien impregnation and a dead person being dragged across the floor, tonight’s results episode brought a performance by Kelly Clarkson and the inevitable elimination. But before that, we got a fantastic opening number.

Choreographed by Tyce Diorio, the remaining seven couples took the stage tonight to demonstrate art come to life as they bounded from a giant frame and danced to “Brand New Day” from The Wiz soundtrack. The routine was both creative and entertaining. Kudos to Tyce for his ingenuity.

Cat got busy with the results after that, revealing that the following three couples will be dancing solos tonight:

Karla Garcia and Vitolio Jeune

Kupono Aweau and Kayla Radomski

Phillip Chbeeb and Jeanine Mason

No real surprise about Karla and Vitolio. The Quickstep has never really been anyone’s friend on this series. I might argue that it was Sonya’s spooky-weird vampire-esque routine that put Kupono and Kayla in the bottom three, had Jason and Caitlin also been bottom-threed. Their alien-performance topped the weird charts last night and those two managed to secure their safety for another week, so I don’t think we can blame Kupono and Kayla’s weak showing in the votes on “weird.” I was just as surprised to see Jason and Caitlin get sent to safety as I was to see Phillip and Jeanine in the bottom three. Hip-Hop is one of Phillip’s strengths but maybe Mia Michaels was right about the chain-ography in their routine last night detracting from the performance. Either way, as much as I like Phillip, I think Jeanine would do better in this competition with another partner.

In terms of the solos, I thought Vitolio’s and Kupono’s were just ok, while Phillip did great but I’m still not convinced that he’s passable as a couples dancer. Meanwhile, I thought Karla and Jeanine did a fantastic job of showing off their strengths and their range. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for Kayla. I like Kayla a lot as a dancer but her solo tonight did nothing for me. It seemed like she did a lot of kicking and not much else.

Kelly Clarkson performed “I Do Not Hook Up” while the judges deliberated. Finally, the results were in and Nigel revealed that the judges were unanimous on their decisions. Nigel told Jeanine that her solo was the strongest of the night and “brilliant.” Needless to say, he sent her to safety. Nigel told Kayla that she was “exceptionally static” in her solo and that she was throwing in a lot of kicks and not dancing from the heart. I can’t disagree with him there. Nigel told Karla that she hasn’t quite captured the star quality that they thought she had at the beginning. He announced that Karla was eliminated. See, now if they were basing tonight’s elimination on solos, Karla should have stayed, however Kayla does seem to have more potential as a star than Karla so in that sense, I can’t really argue with the judges decision to cut her loose.

Nigel said Phillip is phenomenal at what he does but he has a lot of hard work to do with the other genres. He went on to tell Phillip that he was safe. Vitolio was next and Nigel told him he has a great presence on stage but he doesn’t really deliver anything other than that. Nigel told Kupono that his solo was weak but he’s safe. Vitolio is eliminated.

As Karla and Vitolio were partnered, this means all of the dancers will remain with their partners for next week’s performance. Given Nigel’s explanations for eliminating these two, I can’t say I’m all that disappointed to see them go. Both are talented dancers but neither did all that much to pull our attention away from some of the other couples.
