Veep Preview: New Trailer Showcases The HBO Comedy's Cast

Despite its fast approaching premiere date, HBO had not released a single frame of actual footage from their highly anticipated new comedy called Veep. Well, until last night. Previously, the network had only shared a brief, title centric teaser and an invitation to the set of Armando Iannucci's American television debut but this first full trailer (titled "The Core") finally shows the show in action. And it looks very Iannucci, meaning, hilarious.

The trailer does a great job of showcasing most of the cast, especially the lead character, Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Vice President of the US. It's very refreshing to see that she doesn't seem to be based on any existing political figures or easy targets. Actually, she's seemingly whip-smart just without any real power. The rest of the supporting cast all seem somewhat reminiscent of on Iannucci's cast of characters from the British political universe he created for his TV series The Thick of It and (somewhat continued in) his spin-off film In The Loop. The style is also very similar using hand-held cameras and blanket lighting to allow freedom to explore and improvise.

Our first look at the series has been a long time coming. Even the award winning show-runner was clearly also starting to feel the time to generate some buzz slipping away. In anticipation of HBO finally releasing some footage, Iannucci took to twitter to share news of the trailer premiere, all in his signature comedic style. And it definitely worked for me, as I dutifully tuned in at 8:53:15 p.m. to catch the first real glimpse at Veep. Okay, so I might have also tuned in at 9:52:36 p.m. I didn't know it was going to be the same trailer. Political trickery! Still, It's got my vote.

Veep premieres on Sunday, April 22 on HBO. It stars Julia Louis Dreyfus, Matt Walsh, Tony Hale, Anna Chlumsky, Sufe Bradshaw, Tim Simons and Reid Scott. It was created by Armando Iannucci.
