The Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 9 Photos Show Us Michonne, Rick, Carl And Walkers
The Walking Dead will return for the second half of its fourth season in a matter of weeks. Following the recently released featurette that looks at what's ahead for some of the characters, AMC has graciously released some new episode stills from Episode 9, "After," which is set to air February 9. The above image shows Michonne doing what she does best, slashing walkers with her sword. But it's this next one that's really intriguing…
Remember when we first met Michonne and she had two walkers on leashes with her? Well, it looks like she's up to her old tricks. On closer inspection, we can see that their bottom jaws have been removed along with their hands…
If memory serves, Michonne's leashed walkers were part of her security system when she was living out on her own, but seeing her like this feels like regression. She hasn't needed her "pets" since she joined up with Andrea and then after that, with Rick's group. If she has them now, it may be safe to assume she's back on her own and separated from the rest of the people who left the prison at the end of the winter hiatus. Is she on her own by choice, though or because she lost track of the prison people? I'm going to theorize that it's the former. Michonne never really had strong ties to Rick's group, excluding Andrea. But that bond formed away from the prison, and without the shelter of the prison, she may have decided that she's better off away from a larger group of people and all of their drama. We'll have to wait and see where things pick up for her and what the actual situation is.
Also separated from the group are Carl and Rick, who can be seen in these other two images…
Rick's not looking so good, in that second photo, and both photos hint that maybe Carl's the one taking care of both of them right now. Or maybe that's just the assumption I'm jumping to after looking at the mid-season poster, which puts Carl front and center and ahead of — from our perspective — his father…
Here's the mentioned featurette, which includes Andrew Lincoln talking about the physical and psychological state of Rick in the wake of the prison attack:
