What's It Like To Be Fat Like Me?

By Kelly West: 2007-01-02 00:00:00
What's It Like To Be Fat Like Me? You think overweight people have it as bad as they claim? Ali Schmidt wasn’t so sure until she went undercover as an obese high school student for a network news special in 2003. The Lifetime network has made a telefilm based on Ali’s experiences which will air on the network next week. The movie, titled To Be Fat Like Me will star Kaley Cuoco (‘8 Simple Rules’) and ‘Biggest Loser’s’ Caroline Rhea.

Cuoco will play Ali’s role as Aly (with a “y”), a popular high school junior whose goal of getting into college on a softball scholarship gets dashed after an injury leaves her sidelined. She decides to enter a documentary film contest in the hopes of winning the prize money to help with college tuition. Aly, not believing her overweight brother and mother’s struggles are as bad as they claim, decides to go undercover at a rivaling school to see if it’s really that bad for a fat kid in high school. She arms herself with a hidden camera, dons a fat suit and some makeup and the project begins. Thinking she will be able to win people over with her bubbly personality, she quickly learns just how cruel kids can really be when you’re the fat kid.

‘To Be Fat Like Me’ will air on Lifetime on Monday, January 8, 2007 at 9pm ET/PT.

  • I have to agree with Stan. Me and both my kids are, well were overweight ( I still am) My son had reached over 300 lbs and my daugher was going into a size 16 after having her first child and couldn't seem to lose the weight. I WAS in a size 20 and getting bigger. Well my daughter started trying to lose weight by diet and exercise and my son (who I have NEVER been able to get to do anything, he was 19 ) started reading up on how to lose weight and started doing the Denise Austin Tapes my daughter had. To make a long story short he has all but quit eating meat except for small quantities of chicken and fish. Mostly vegtables, no sugar, salt, hardly any salad dressing and low fat if he does, no processed foods and hes been running every day (now that he has lost a tremenous amount of weight its easier for him) Since last Christmas he went from a size 54 pants to a size 40. He's wearing xl shirts and hasnt been this small in forever!! He looks awesome and rags on me continually because I still don't eat like I should and have high blood pressure although I am now is a size 16 to 18 depending on what day it is. My daughter is now in a size 12 and looks the best she's ever looked. The difference is amazing. He feels great and looks great and just a year ago he was considering gastric bypass. Although this might not work for everyone, I am convinced with this type of lifestyle change works. All this processed food from stress filled hurry up lifestyle has caused terrible side effects on everyone. Ask Jack Lalanne. My kids have inspired me to lose more and eat better. I am here to testify that the eat your vegtables works! He's gone from being a couch potatoe to making sure he has time to run in between work and college. I am so surpirsed that he made such a change but the thing is, no matter how I nagged him he had to want to do it for himself. Once he got motivated that was all it took. He couldnt even get on the treadmill as he weighed too much. The only downside is now he will have to have surgery to remove all the excess and he's 20 and in college with no money to spare. This movie was totally on target and really hit home. He was ridiculed all his school life. He had no friends and it ruined his childhood. He was even turned away at a ride in an amusement park as the bar wouldn't lock down and he was humiliated! It broke my heart. I am glad he has finally gotten control of his health. Now if only I can do the same! When I saw the scene where she tells her mom how she felt about how about her bad eating it really stepped on my toes! It's about time this subject was brought out!
  • sorry but MY FRIEND WAS IN THAT MOVIE!!! :) ya sorry to break teh discussion but I had to say it oh ok one more thing MY MOMS BEST FRIENDS SISTER WAS THE DIRECTOR!!!:)
  • Food is not an addiction. Do some research, and read between the lines. The answer is to eat unprocessed plant foods. No milk. No cheese. No meat. No processed foods. Eat as much as you want until you can't eat another bite. You will become a healthy weight and you will not go hungry. You will eat until you are full and you won't feel that sick feeling. You will discover a whole world of new foods and tastes you never knew existed. You will have fun and you will love food like you never have. No kidding. This sounded like bull to me. I was wrong. Give it a try for one month and see for yourself. Look around the net for vegan, or better yet raw foods. One month. Nothing to buy. No one is selling you anything. This is not a lose weight quick scheme. This is a life change. You will feel better than you have in - forever. Really. Try it. One month.
  • TIFFANY,
I THINK THAT YOU NEED CAOUNSELING TO COMBAT YOUR DEMONS. YOU HAVE TO REALIZE THAT FOOD CAN BE AN ADDICTION AND ONE OF THE WORSE THERE IS. YOU CAN STOP USING DRUGS, YOU CAN STOP SMOKING, YOU CAN STOP DRINKING ALCOHOL AND LIVE . I BET YOU MY LIFE THAT YOU WILL NOT MEET ONE PERSON THAT CAN STOP EATING AND LIVE. WE FACE OUR DEMON AT LEAST THREE TIMES A DAY. YOU ALSO NEED TO DETERMINE IF BEING THIN IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN BEING HEALTHY
    BEST WISHES

    IN THE SAME BOAT
  • I'm glad that this movie came out. People need to realize the pain that they put overweight people through. I'm overweight. I know what its like. And yes, I am lazy, but that isn't the reason I'm "fat."

Some of us have tried diets and pills and exercise. We want to change. But too many people don't realize that sometimes it just doesn't happen. I used to walk 3 miles a day and run 1 and I still didn't lose weight. And I was around 10 years old at the time. AND I STILL DIDN'T LOSE. And yes, I had changed my eating habits at the time as well. I had the "get up at 4, exercise, go to school, come home and swim" regime for longer than a year and i didn't lose anything.

People don't realize that. People just think that fat people are "Lazy" and they "Over-eat" all the time. I'm 17 and I've had a boyfriend once. And you know what, he was paid. He was paid $50. I guess I'm only worth fifty bucks.

This movie hits so close to home. I've had to go to counseling because my self-esteem got so low. Friends tell you that you are "beautiful" and "smart" but you can't feel that when people tell you that you are "worthless" and you "look like you got hit by a bus." How are you suppose to feel beautiful when people tell you many times a day that you aren't?

Hopefully this move will shed some light on the World about being overweight.
