We all knew Joss Whedon’s fans were some of the most devoted out there, but who knew they would stick by him even when he stopped doing the very thing they love him for? When Whedon joined picket lines in Los Angeles last week, fans of the writer-director rallied to bring food to the picketers. After Whedon eloquently thanked the group on their own website, they merged with an even larger contingent of supportive fans to found Fans4Writers.com, an organizing nerve center for fans looking for a way to carry their favorite writers through the strike woes.
Writers have welcomed fans to join the picket lines, which is probably a lot more fun prospect out in L.A. than here in New York, where striking writers have already complained about the low temperatures. (Hey! They’re writers! They’re used to stuffy conference rooms!) A way to show support in person without sticking it out in the cold is delivering food, as the Whedon fans did. Fans4Writers is looking for volunteers to drop off food, and also provides a way to donate money to the cause. They’re also organizing postcard mailing campaigns, efforts to promote the strike and to bring the message straight to the studios.
Granted, supporting the striking writers isn’t the biggest human rights concern out there right now, but for those of us both anxious to see television return to normal and supportive of the writers’ cause, it’s a way to be part of something major and historic. The writers are sticking tough, and are likely in this for the long haul; many of the picketers, unlike Whedon (as he graciously acknowledges) will be facing a winter of uncertain finances and worries. Kona has already suggested the incredibly powerful idea to boycott online television viewing, but if you want to do more, or if you’re like me and have trouble resisting rewatching last week’s 30 Rock over and over, there’s even more that can be done. We’ve all seen the power of fans in the past, and maybe this time we can save not just one show we love, but all of them, and especially the people who create them.
