Aaron Sorkin has a knack for writing TV shows about what really might be going on behind the scenes in certain situations. Whether itís a scripted glimpse into the inner workings of the White House (The West Wing), a behind-the-scenes dramedy about a sports show (Sports Night), or a similarly-styled dramedy about the off-screen happenings of a sketch-comedy show (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip), Sorkin has enough TV creations to be considered and expert in the subject. So, itís no surprise that HBO has given his latest TV venture a series pickup.

The project, which has yet to be titled, has a promising cast, consisting of Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Alison Pill, John Gallgher Jr., Olivia Munn, Dev Patel, Thomas Sadoski and Sam Waterston. The series follows a cable news anchor, his producer and the rest of the staff as they go about their business of delivering the news to the public, while also juggling their own personal issues.

The Hollywood Reporter posted the news of the seriesí pickup, stating that Sorkin prepared for the project by observing known cable news personalities like Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews.

While Sorkin has a number of popular TV credits under his belt, among his more recent successes is numerous awards (including a BAFTA and an Oscar) for writing the screenplay for The Social Network. Itís exciting to have him back working in television and doubly exciting that HBO has the series. Between their budget and content flexibility as a pay-cable channel, Sorkin should have more creative freedom than he might have if this project were set up for network TV or basic cable.
