Alec Baldwin And Steve Martin Both Hosting The Oscars

Ordinarily, if you told me that Oscar was going to reach into their way-back machine to select a host for The 82nd Annual Academy Awards, I'd think we were going to see Billy Crystal host for the ninth time. Or even Whoopi Goldberg for her fifth, who's riding a new wave of celebrity due to her work on The View. However, when they reached back they plucked Steve Martin, who'll be returning for his third stint as host, and first since 2003.
Joining Steve Martin, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is first-time host Alec Baldwin. Producers Bill Mechanic and So You Think You Can Dance's Adam Shankman felt they needed to bring comedy to the proceedings. "We want to take a show that can feel long and boring at times and make it feel shorter and more fun," said Shankman. "The idea of two co-hosts who could move things along just seemed like a great idea."
They also liked the idea that Martin and Baldwin were not a pre-existing comedy duo, which means it should be a fresh experience for viewers. One thing the pair do have in common is a long history of live comedy. They are the two most frequent hosts for Saturday Night Live in the show's 35-year history. Martin has hosted the show 15 times, with Baldwin inching ever closer at 14.
By the time the Oscars air March 7th on ABC, they will have also starred together in It's Complicated, a Meryl Streep film coming out in December. And, of course, who can forget Steve Martin's guest appearance on Alec Baldwin's 30 Rock last season as one of Jack's eccentric business associates.
A fresh injection of comedy could be exactly what the Oscars needs. And at least with Baldwin and Martin, fans can see familiar faces. If the Academy sticks to recent tradition, all the film and acting nominees will be virtual unknowns.
So what do you think of the new faces of Oscar? I think I would have liked to see Neil Patrick Harris up there, as he's on a bit of an awards show run, but both Baldwin and Martin are very capable of bringing the funny.
