Spoilers from tonight’s episode of Almost Human ahead!

Since Almost Human began just a few weeks ago, I wondered how long we’d have to wait for Rudy to get an episode. Mackenzie Crook is simply far too likable to be left confined to his robot-lab all of the time, right? Sure enough, the preview above, which gives us a behind-the-scenes look at “The Bends” indicates that Rudy will be brought to the forefront of tonight’s episode as he’s called upon to help Kennex and Dorian with an undercover assignment.

Of course, a guy like Rudy probably already has preconceived notions as to how this whole undercover thing works. As the preview teases, he wants to be in character for this mission, and that involves a snazzy get-up, 007-style. It looks like he does get to suit up for the actual mission. And then things go wrong when his GPS tracker stops working and they can’t find him. Not good!

The official episode description offers up a few more details about the plot of the episode:
An old cop friend of Detective Kennex’s (Karl Urban) goes undercover, posing as a “cook” of a highly addictive street drug called “The Bends.” But his cover is blown. As the scope of the intense drug investigation unfolds, a determined Kennex and Dorian (Michael Ealy) call on Rudy Lom (Mackenzie Crook) for assistance in the adrenaline-fueled all-new “The Bends” episode of ALMOST HUMAN airing Monday, Dec. 2 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

One of the things I’m really enjoying about Almost Human — besides the humor — is the way the futuristic backdrop is used in just about every layer. It’s not only there to provide an explanation for how a humanoid robot like Dorian can exist, or simply to dress up the scenery and special effects. We’re also seeing it come into play in the crimes that are being committed and how the detectives are solving them, which is really what helps set Almost Human apart from other crime procedurals, while also allowing it to follow the familiar format. In the case of “The Bends,” it’s a new drug that comes from algae, which is apparently highly addictive. That sounds like a plot that could be modified to be used in the present day, but then you factor in the camera-armed roaches scuttling in behind Rudy to film everything, and we’re in a more sci-fi place.

Tune in tonight (Monday, December 2) to see if Rudy manages to survive this mission! Almost Human airs Monday at 8:00 p.m. ET on Fox.
