Saturday Night Live kicked off its new season last weekend, the first without leading players Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg. While both have moved on to many feature film projects, and deservedly so, the later doesn’t seem to be finished with television just yet. Samberg’s first TV project since leaving the late night sketch comedy series won’t be for North American audiences though, at least not initially, with the actor playing Cuckoo for Britain’s BBC Three.
Cuckoo is both the name of the series and Samberg’s character, an American ”slacker full of outlandish, New Age ideas” who accompanies his new bride Rachel, Tamla Kari, back to her home in Britain. Too bad her parents, Ken and Lorna - played by Welsh comedian Greg Davies and Helen Baxendale - had no idea their daughter even got married while in the States on her gap year let alone he’d be coming back to live with them. Or that he’d be a self proclaimed “spiritual ninja.” Meaning, an idiot. Here’s the first look…
One of the first things I noticed was that the mom, Helen Baxendale, is Emily from Friends. After struggling with that for a while, I went back and watched it again and found it pretty amusing. The trailer is too short to get a real gauge for the series but Samberg versus Davies looks like a bout worth watching, especially when the former is playing this odd the wall, character in a Davy Crockett cap. Speaking of their 'bouts,' here's a clip called "Ken gets slapped" where, well, you get it...
The six-part comedy was created and written by Robin French and Kieron Quirke (Man Stroke Woman and Roommates) and is executive produced by Ash Atalla (The Office and The IT Crowd). Decent pedigree. Cuckoo premieres on September 25 at 10 p.m. on BBC Three. Absolutely no word on whether or not the series will make its way to North American screens but I wager it will.
