Arrested Development Isn't Likely To Go To Season 5 At Netflix

While we can celebrate the fact that Netflix is giving us one more season of Arrested Development, it may be too much to hope that the series would continue on beyond that, at least at Netflix. With talk of the series paving the way to a movie, hope for a fifth season might have been a stretch to begin with, but from what Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said recently, it sounds like Netflix is only planning for Arrested Development's small screen return to be a one-season venture.
THR reports that Hastings says they don't anticipate being able to do additional seasons of Mitch Hurwitz' beloved comedy beyond the approaching fourth season:
"Arrested is a unique property, we donít anticipate being able to do season five, six and seven," Hastings said. "We have less of a stake in it. It is really a fantastic one-off, which is coming together incredibly. I think it will be amazing for us, but think of it as a nonrepeatable amazing, whereas the other thing that we are doing is to trying to figure out a real mechanism where we can build shows and develop franchises over the long term. In that way, Arrested Development is a wildly successful tactic, as opposed to fundamental to the strategy."
The site goes on to say that Hastings told the Wall Street Journal that it would be very difficult to reunite the cast for future seasons. It's disappointing to hear that, but the above news isn't particularly surprising, when you consider that it was probably something close to a miracle that the cast was able to sort out their busy schedules enough to reunite for the fourth season of the series, which comes about seven years after the Fox comedy wrapped up in 2006. The series is expected to debut on Netflix this May, after which fans may be able to hold onto hope that the cast will get together once again for the talked-about movie that may or may not be in store.
