Ever wonder if you could actually escape from prison, Tim Robins-style? Or if you could get off some deserted island with only a few home gadgets a la Tom Hanks? Maybe you’re certain you could get out of the mountains without having to eat everyone else in your party like a certain stranded soccer team. Well, a new show could give you just that chance. Deadline reports TNT will possibly pick up a new reality show aimed at putting contestants in extreme situations, with limited resources, and seeing if they have the mettle to survive. The Great Escape, co-produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, is said to have a “MacGyver-like flavor.”
Reality shows still abound with new staged plots popping up every year. The Great Escape’s concept is a little tough to buy for a couple of reasons. How realistic can these scenarios possibly be, and in turn, how often will contestants actually be allowed to fail? For instance, breaking out of prison is virtually impossible, but John and Jane Smith will do it in a day with a nail file and some chewing gum? Also, how could television producers really and truly simulate getting off a deserted island? Call me a reality cynic, but it just doesn’t add up. Reality programs are tough sells, and this one is no different. I want my reality realistic (like the Jersey Shore).
