Fresh off being so drunk she was taken to jail for her own safety, singer Christina Aguilera has become the third musician to join Mark Burnett’s new play at a reality competition The Voice. Former Gnarls Barkley crooner Cee Lo Green and current Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine have already been enlisted as coaches, but in Aguilera, the NBC program has finally found its first household name, at least as far as judging goes.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, late night host Carson Daly is also in place as The Voice’s host, providing more stability to the offering that many suspected would be cast aside as an American Idol also ran.
I’m not sold this will be able to maintain over the long haul, especially after paying the new talent that surely didn’t come cheap, but it’s still nice to see The Voice is actually making a play at becoming a major competitor. It premieres on Tuesday April 26th at 9 p.m. on NBC. Early numbers should give us a strong indication on whether this is all for not or if, as Burnett is surely hoping, The Voice will be a viable competitor to American Idol and Simon Cowell’s new X-Factor.
