Downton Abbey’s Lord and Lady Grantham were young once, and the ITV hit series’ writer Julian Fellowes wants to tell their story. Word is he’s looking to write a prequel to Downton that would explore the relationship between the two, how they met and married and spawned all of the drama we’ve been enjoying.

Fellowes, according to BBC News told audiences in a Bafta Screenwriters lectures series talk that he would like to write a book telling the backstory of the Granthams. While he’s looking to go to print for the story, odds are highly in favor of any such tale being made into a television adaptation. There are any number of possibilities for how it would be presented. It could be a telefilm, possible a mini-series, or even a full-on spin-off that could pick up the Downton audience when that show reaches its conclusion.

Fellowes did in fact say that any television adaptation wouldn’t air until after Downton wraps up – in fact it doesn’t look like he would even look to publish until the series ends.
"For me, any other books or plays or films should follow after the end of the television show. I don't think you can continue a narrative in more than one area at once.”

So it looks like we’ll be waiting a while to get the story on how the American heiress became Lady Grantham. As it is, American audiences already have to bide their time waiting for the third series of Downton which just premiered in the UK to strong ratings. Should the prequel make it to television, it would feature a much younger version of the couple, requiring two young actors to take on the roles. The prequel would look at their motivations for the marriage and how it affected the future Lord and Lady we see on Downton. Fellowes said the courtship might have been a rocky one.
"They had a slightly troubled courtship, because she was in love with him before they married, as we know, and he married her entirely for her money.”

Downton Abbey will return to U.S. television for series 3 on January 6th, 2013.
