Family Guy Takes Aim At Girls With A Racy Emmy Ad
Emmy nomination ballots went out this week, which means in the coming weeks, those voting members of the Television Academy will decide which series should be in contention for an Emmy Award this fall. TV shows tend to promote themselves with the "for your consideration" ads and mailers to encourage voters to give their show a look. Last year, Family Guy made a splash with a controversial mailer that said "Come on, you bloated, overprivileged Brentwood Jews. Let us into your little club." The words were set over an image of Peter Griffin, adding a bit of that New England accent to the tone. This year, Family Guy took it a step further by taking a shot at girls. No pun intended. Ok, maybe a little intended.
Family Guy's 2013 Emmy ad, which can be viewed above and comes courtesy of THR, takes a different approach to grabbing voters' attention. Without reading the text at the top, it seems like FG is having fun with the poster for the HBO comedy series, putting Family Guy characters in the place of Girls stars Jemima Kirke, Allison Williams, Lena Dunham and Zosia Mamet. But then we look at the top, which reads, "Here's a load of comedy to shoot on your chest."
It's crass, sure, and it'll likely raise some eyebrows. But it's also a direct reference to one of the more recent, awkward sexual moments in Lena Dunham's comedy, which tends to showcase those as part of the humor and drama of the series. Considering Girls was nominated for an Emmy last year (it lost to Modern Family), it seems Family Guy has found an angle it can work with in its efforts to make the list this year, though something tells me Girls stands a better chance, especially when factoring in its Golden Globe win.
What do you think of the ad?
