New Girl’s new writer and now co-executive producer Kay Cannon has got a new project at Fox. She has sold a workplace comedy to the network with a put pilot commitment, marking her first development deal and building on her relationship with 20th Century Fox Television.
The comedy, according to Deadline is a Mary Tyler Moore-style project that focuses on a female lead working in a Fox NFL Sunday-type office environment. It seems that female-led comedies are the way to go on Fox these days. There’s New Girl of course, which is heading into its second season, and then the much-hyped The Mindy Project starring Mindy Kaling that will appear in September. This new comedy could fit right into the lineup.
Kay Cannon has been working on 30 Rock for the past 6 years and picked up an Emmy a few years ago for an episode co-written with Tina Fey. She also has a movie, Pitch Perfect, due out in theaters this coming October. She’s definitely seeing a career on the upswing, having risen to the position of supervising producer on 30 Rock and signing on to handle co-executive producing on New Girl. Production of this new comedy could make her one seriously busy woman in the near future.
The Kay Cannon project is the second major commitment from Fox on a comedy recently; they just gave a production commitment to a single-camera comedy from Parks & Recreation team Michael Schur and Dan Goor as well.
