I’m sure many Spartacus fans are still reeling from the tragic news that actor Andy Whitfield has lost his battle against cancer. While it was always a possibility, I had hoped that the long period without word would eventually lead to good news. Whitfield was an amazing talent who, for American audiences, seemed to come out of nowhere and blow many of us away with his intense portrayal of the gladiator who would eventually lead a slave rebellion. He will be missed when Spartacus: Vengeance returns to Starz in 2012, and newcomer Liam McIntyre has one helluva set of shoes to fill in the role of Spartacus.
But while his career was cut short, Whitfield gave us one completely unforgettable season, which has now become a certified franchise for Starz. When Whitfield’s health concerns initially forced him to bow out of the series, the show’s producers decided to make a prequel series that focused on the time before Spartacus arrived at the gladiatorial school, one that would allow them to make use of existing sets and their talented cast, some of whom could not feasibly return for any sequel series. The result was Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, a series that absolutely maintained the high bar Blood and Sand had set. Now, thanks to Anchor Bay Entertainment, you’ve got a chance to experience it yourself, because we’re giving away two Blu-ray copies of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.
