Glee Preview: Is Ricky Martin Too Sexy As The Spanish Teacher?Author: Kelly West

I’ve always found it to be a bit awkward when Glee‘s Will Schuester crosses the teacher/student line and gets a bit too friendly with the kids. It’s less about inappropriateness, as is about believability. I don't think there's anything predatory about Mr. Schu. The show paints him as the kind of teacher that really gets his students, which is a good thing. And it might be considered a waste of Matthew Morrison’s singing and dancing talents to keep his character sidelined all the time, but still... When he starts getting into in the musical numbers with his students, my suspension of disbelief feels stretched to uncomfortable limits.
What does this have to do with Ricky Martin’s guest appearance? A video of one of the musical numbers from “The Spanish Teacher” made its way online and from the looks of it, the line between teacher and student is even blurrier with Martin’s character... unless you consider it perfectly normal for a teacher to perform “Sexy and I know It” with a bunch of teenagers. Check out the video below (via THR), which was posted by the GleeOnFox Youtube Channel and is, for some reason, darkly tinted, but includes the full performance of “Sexy and I Know It.” Again, it comes down to believability here. And appropriateness. Am I being overly critical in wondering why a teacher is singing and dancing to this song with a bunch of students? Sure. It’s Ricky Martin. He’s sexy, and we all know it. Even teenagers know it. And it's a good performance. But if he’s supposed to be a teacher, maybe the classroom (or glee club room) isn’t the most fitting place to show that off. Perhaps there will be a bit more context to this when we see how it fits into the actual episode...? Thoughts? Glee’s “The Spanish Teacher” episode airs Tuesday, Feb. 7 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. |
