Glee Watch: Season 4, Episode 20 - Lights Out
In last night's episode, McKinley High experienced a power outage, New Directions went a capella, Ryder and Kitty revealed some painful secrets from their childhood, plus Santana decides to put her feet to good use. Let's recap, shall we?g
Always one to make lemonade out of lemons, New Directions takes advantage of the McKinley High power outage to get back to music basics. (And did anyone find it weird how long it took them to get the power back?)
This week's theme is "Unplugged," and the gang gets to use household items for instruments and perform a capella. Sometimes I forget how powerful a capella songs can be. You really get to appreciate the sound and tone of the voices without being distracted by the background music.
Sue Is A Trainer
Folks, Sue Sylvester is a trainer. And guess where she works? 23-Hour Fitness. Of course Glee would have a quirky fitness studio like that. Haha. Blaine tries to get Sue to admit what really happened with the school shooting but Sylvester won't cave. Besides she is enjoying her job where she gets to abuse people in her "Olivia Newton-John Aerobics Class."
Later on though, Sue shows up in the principal's office with a confession to make. Given Sue's background, who knows what she'll admit to (blackmailing Blaine for example), but I'm hoping she'll tell Figgins the truth about the school shooting. Or Becky will do it first since it looked like Becky was about to confess just as the lights came back on. Becky is seriously tired of being tormented by Roz, so I assume she'll do anything to get Sue back. But the question is when the truth comes out, will Figgins take Sue back? After all, Sue covered up a pretty serious incident.
I've really missed the dynamic between SJP's Isabelle and Kurt. And she reminds us that Kurt's dad has cancer. (How many episodes has it been since that reveal?) She also gives Kurt the chance to replace Anna Wintour's daughter for a ballet gala charity assignment.
I know Kurt wants a career in music, but when I see him and Isabelle in the Vogue.com fashion environment, I sometimes think that's more Kurt's gig. Rachel is so Broadway, but Kurt is so fashion. I wonder what he will ultimately choose, or if he could find a happy medium.
Santana Joins The NYADA Gang Sorta
Speaking of finding a path, Santana who loved ballet as a child, decides to enroll in a NYADA ballet class. It's nice to see Santana has found a sense of direction, and isn't letting Rachel and Kurt pressure her.
During the power outage Ryder - in an attempt to get the Catfisher to reveal himself/herself - admits he was molested by a 17-year-old girl when he was 11. I was surprised and disappointed that Sam and Artie could be so insensitive to question why Ryder wouldn't think it's a dream come true. Umm because he was an 11-year-old kid who was abused.
Later Kitty admits to Ryder that when she was in middle-school she also was molested by a friend's older brother and forced to change schools after the boy's parents didn't believe her. Hmm Kitty's childhood trauma explains a lot, why her personality is so defensive and acerbic. She's still in a way protecting herself and lashing out.
Meanwhile Ryder is still being Catfished. I thought for sure we were going to get some resolution this episode. (Hopefully next week?) And then Ryder rejects Kitty's advances. Doesn't he realize what he's doing? He's choosing a mysterious avatar over a real-life person.
When the lights go out, Unique thinks it's Beyonce's half-time show.
Blaine: "I'll admit. I rejoined the Cheerios with the sole plan of destroying you from the inside." Sue: "Admirable."
Santana: "The last thing I want to do is pay 30 grand a year to get a degree for doing something that I'm already freaking Wonder Woman at."
Sue: "Dear journal, I speak to you now not as Sue Sylvester, world class coach and educatrix, but as Sue Sylvester, freelance champion."
"You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'"
"At the Ballet"
"We Will Rock You"
Gleeks, hopefully we'll see the truth come out about Ryder's Catfish and Sue/Becky's involvement in the school shooting next week. See you then!
