Hayley Atwell Says She Would Be Game For A Peggy Carter Series
Last month, before Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. even hit ABC’s schedule, there was already plenty of talk about other Marvel characters that could potentially land a TV series. At that time Peggy Carter’s name was tossed into the mix, and although the studio doesn’t currently have plans to base a series around the Captain America character, on Wednesday, Hayley Atwell, the actress who played the character in the first movie, said she would be totally game to do a TV show.
Atwell clearly likes playing Peggy Carter. For the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray release, she put together a Marvel One-Shot segment, which followed Carter a year after the events occurring in the first Captain America movie. Additionally, the actress recently confirmed to Digital Spy that she also shot a flashback appearance for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, noting that the flashback will be made up of new footage. Even though Carter won’t be the main female lead in The Winter Soldier, her character is still popular and I can see people investing in a series based around the badass beauty.
Apparently, Atwell could see herself playing Peggy Carter again, as well. She told the aforementioned news outlet that she would be excited about reprising the role and seeing where Carter could go in the TV realm.
"I think Marvel [would] probably take that very seriously, and it's certainly something I would be a part of doing. I'd be interested to show different sides of Peggy. Although she's kick-ass, and she can be aggressive and she can be just as competent as the men, it'd be nice to show that she's a feminist in a way.”
She seems to already have pretty firm ideas about where she would like the character to go. While this seems like particularly good news, when asked about the potential of a TV series, Atwell unfortunately noted she had ‘read’ about the possibility.
"I read about that too. The one-shot was so successful, the fanbase were like, 'We want more of Peggy!'”
Being enthusiastic is all good and well, but it sounds like no one has even sat down to begin talks for a potential series, yet, despite the early ratings success of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Honestley, a Captain America character spinoff sounds like the sort of idea the company might dwell on for a couple of years before attempting to introduce on the network, but sometimes when the ball gets rolling with an idea, things start moving really quickly. At least we can hope. Fans of Marvel should at least be enthusiastic about the fact that Atwell would be willing to take that sort of TV gig, should the role come around.
In the meantime, you can catch ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D. on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
