In what is probably unsurprising news, but still cause to celebrate, HBO announced today that they’ve renewed the popular fantasy-drama series Game of Thrones for a third season. This news comes after just two episodes of the pay cable network’s second season have aired.
Game of Thrones is a TV drama adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s popular fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. Deadline shared HBO’s announcement of the series’ renewal. Per the announcement, the second season premiere has grossed an audience of 8.3 million viewers so far, and is on track to top the 9.3 million viewers averaged for the first season premiere.
“Series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss raised our expectations for the second season – and then surpassed them,” said Lombardo. “We are thrilled by all the viewer and media support we’ve received for the series, and can’t wait to see what Dan and David have in store for next season.”
While the first season of the series followed the happenings of the first book of the series (A Game of Thrones), the second season follows the continued story in A Clash of Kings. Unless the writers decide to shift away from the book-to-TV format, the third season would presumably follow A Storm of Swords. For those curious, there are currently five books released for the series so far.
Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO. Click here for a preview of Season 2, Episode 3 of Game of Thrones.
