How I Met Your Mother Season 8 Could Be The Last

Going into Season 8, the future of How I Met Your Mother is still up in the air. Showrunners are looking at the upcoming season as though it could be the last, while negotiations for a ninth season are still in progress and plenty of the characters' next move are still up in the air pending that decision.

As it stands now, there’s no guarantee of another season of HIMYM beyond the one set to premiere in September. That leaves showrunners with no choice but to move into the new season with an ending in mind, while still keeping the option open for a ninth season and maybe even beyond. Co-creator Craig Thomas tells TVLine (this link contains spoilers!) “It’s an interesting situation because there’s a negotiation going on that could extend the show.” He’s hoping that the negotiations will lead to a decision one way or the other quickly. “Basically, we couldn’t know soon enough.” Meanwhile, they know a few things about the upcoming season – spoilers ahead!

HIMYM is going into Season 8 with each of the characters in a relationship, and what they do know for sure is that there’s going to be a whole lot of breaking up early in the season. “We’re calling October Breakup Month,” says Thomas of both Barney and Ted’s current relationships. Season 8 will also see the return of Michael Trucco as a love interest for Robin, but since “Barney’s going to marry Robin” according to Thomas, that relationship will be short-lived especially if the eighth season turns out to be the last. The premiere episode will give a closer look at that big wedding day and apparently, “it will blow some people’s minds.” Well, mind-blowing is a good way to kick off the season.

So it seems there is something of a plan in place for the eighth season, but the negotiations for the series to go on into season nine would change the game for sure. Hopefully, we’ll get an answer on that one soon. Meanwhile, prepare to have your mind blown on the Season 8 premiere September 24th.
