NBCs pilot for the comedy About a Boy has picked up a director. Jon Favreau, who recently directed the pilot for NBCs hit drama Revolution will come on board the project, which comes to us from Friday Night Lights executive produce Jason Katims.

About a Boy is based on the novel by Nick Hornby, which, as Deadline notes, was already adapted to the big screen in a movie starring Hugh Grant. The story of a somewhat lost boy whose single mother is quirky, to put it kindly, seeking a male role model in a bachelor whose knowledge of kids is limited is one of my favorite movies, so Im anxious to see how it will come across on television. The unlikely friendship between the two ultimately changes both of their lives, as well as the life of the mom in the end. Well have to see how the show can do without Hugh Grant to warble a cringe-worthy version of Killing Me Softly.

Favreau certainly has a good feel for quirky comedy, having starred in movies like Swingers and more recently Couples Retreat. Hes still something of a newbie when it comes to directing, however, and this will be his first comedy pilot; he has worked mainly in features. So while he brings plenty of comedy experience to the table, hell need to come at it from a different angle. Certainly after the success of Revolution, NBC has good reason to put their faith in him.

About a Boy is one of eleven comedy pilots ordered by NBC this season, and may be the one I am most hoping goes to series.
