Lionsgate To Produce Harold & Kumar Animated Comedy
While Harold & Kumar are headed into 3D territory at theaters today, the successful franchise is ready to go in yet another direction. It’s looking like Harold & Kumar could get animated. It’s also looking like this strange idea could happen soon, and for television.
Lionsgate TV is currently looking around to see if any network will pick up an animated version of Harold & Kumar. The project, though drawn instead of shot, would be very similar to what audiences have gotten in theaters. Original writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are set to pen the project and John Cho and Kal Penn are ready to turn their acting skills into voicework for their modestly loved characters. Mandate will co-produce alongside Lionsgate.
If you’ve seen the trailer or caught A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas this morning, you have already seen the two extremely high protagonists pull a Community and pop into stop-motion animation. Stop-motion animation is notoriously more time consuming than regular animation, leading me to guess the for-TV project would likely choose the cheaper format. According to Deadline, MTV and Comedy Central are both shopping for the project, which also lends itself to the keeping-down-the-budget argument. Either way, I’d be happy to see this idea go to air.
Maybe if MTV nabs it, they can throw it onto the Thursday lineup, alongside Beavis and Butt-head and call it “The Idiot Hour.” Just a thought. You can check out the voice-work capabilities of Cho and Penn in the red band trailer.
