Lizzy Caplan Considering Shows For ABC And HBOAuthor: Katey Rich

After signing on last spring for a guest role on Mad Love only to bail once it got picked up for a series order, Lizzy Caplan is already making her return to network television comedy. But it's another project for HBO that might be the most interesting part. Here's what Deadline is telling us: Caplan has agreed to a guest role in Mr. Sunshine, which stars Matthew Perry as the manager of an arena in San Diego and Allison Janney as his boss. Caplan will be playing Janney's assistant whom Perry sleeps with the night before she starts her job (shades of the Grey's Anatomy pilot, anyone?)
The role will only be a guest part, though, because Caplan is also working on the HBO project with none other than Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, an adaptation of Julie Klausner's book I Don't Care About Your Band. The book-- actually, the memoir-- chronicles Klausner's experiences dating a series of guys who were wildly wrong for her and also not that interested. Caplan is a gifted comedian who's always been underappreciated, and a lead role in a series like this sounds like something she could totally nail. No offense to Mr. Sunshine-- which sounds promising, and has a guest start lineup that also includes Nick Jonas, James Taylor and Jorge Garcia-- but I don't blame her for prioritizing the HBO show instead.
