American Idol was a hot mess last time around. The ratings were a borderline disaster. Longtime producers Ken Warwick and Nigel Lythgoe were forced out at the end of the season, and Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey spent as much time making wild statements to the press and glaring at each other as they did giving meaningful feedback to the contestants. At various points, rumors swirled that the women may have been playing it up a bit for the sake of the cameras, but months after officially leaving the program, they’re still holding the same grudges.

Carey appeared on Hot 97 this week to talk about her upcoming album, but during the sitdown, she was asked a series of questions about her time on the hit reality program. She did not hold back her feelings. At all. Apparently, she was led to believe it would be a three person panel consisting of her, her longtime friend Randy Jackson and someone else she could get along with. Instead, it turned into a four person panel that, well, I’ll use her exact words, as per Entertainment Weekly
”It was like hell. It was like going to work every day in hell with Satan.”

In addition, Carey also apparently had problems with the show because producers let certain people through and denied others for “political reasons”. I would interpret that to mean because they either looked good on camera or had an interesting backstory, but she didn’t really clarify her opinion with enough specifics to know for sure exactly what she was talking about.

Regardless, I think we can all agree doing American Idol was a miserable experience for her and for everyone who was forced to watch her wishy-washy, uninteresting opinions for the entire season. It was just a complete failure for everyone involved, and personally, I’m really glad the show is trying something different.

If you’re interested in listening to the full interview with Carey, I’ve gone ahead and embedded the video below. The majority of the chat does not involve American Idol, but if you’re a Carey fan, it’s all interesting enough, as radio interviews go. If you’re directly looking for the AI conversation, it starts at the 9:45 mark…
