President Bill Clinton will be the subject of a new documentary for HBO, and there’s a seriously big name set to direct. Oscar and Emmy winner Martin Scorsese will take on the task of exploring Clinton’s life and experience both in the White House and afterward. He even has the former President’s full cooperation for the documentary.
Scorsese has long been a supporter of the Democratic Party and of the Clintons – both Bill and Hillary – so although he might not be the most unbiased director to handle this project, he’s not a surprising choice. The documentary will look at Clinton’s views on politics, history, the world and culture and through which Scorsese says he hopes to provide “greater insight into this transcendent figure.” Clinton is on board for the "intimate" look at his work, saying he’s “pleased” that Scorsese will be directing. The famed director will also be producing the documentary along with Steve Bing.
This isn’t Scorsese’s first effort for HBO; he has has two documentaries under his belt at the pay network, Public Speaking and George Harrison: Living in the Material World. Scorsese also executive produces Boardwalk Empire and directed the pilot for the series, for which he picked up an Emmy.
The Clinton documentary looks like it will lean towards Clinton’s work in the White House and his efforts after leaving office with the William J. Clinton Foundation, whose goals include improving world health, helping to strengthen economies around the world, supporting healthier childhoods and environmental protection. From what Deadline reports, it sounds like Clinton’s personal life won’t be put much into focus, and I am willing to bet we don’t hear the name Monica Lewinsky at all, which is just fine by me.
