The Obama administration seems to have a real handle on diplomacy between the White House and the American public, using forums like Facebook and Twitter to send messages to the masses, and giving impressionable appearances on late night shows to reach everyone else. Both President Obama and Michelle Obama have taken time out of their busy schedules on multiple occasions to do interviews on shows ranging from Jimmy Fallon to Leno during the past four years. Some of these talks have hit serious notes, like when Obama discussed the GOP and Gaddafi on Leno, but I personally prefer Michelle’s perspective when she gets excited about the platforms she is involved in.
This time around, Obama will not be facing off against Jimmy Fallon in potato sack races to promote “Let’s Move.” Instead, she will be taking a less goofy stance in a chair opposite Jay Leno on NBC. The First Lady’s The Tonight Show appearance will fall rather quickly, taking place on August 13. According to Deadline, this is because Mrs. Obama will be discussing her experiences as the head of the U.S. Olympic delegation.
It will be interesting to hear about the Olympics from a diplomatic—and not an athlete’s—perspective, but I’m almost more enthused for the second half of the interview, which will feature Obama discussing life within the walls of the White House. Elections are creeping up in November and a late night interview is a great chance for the administration to stick their nose out and show a readiness and willingness to stick around for another term.
