Mitt Romney isn’t quite sure yet if he’s willing to take a turn on the Saturday Night Live stage, or so he told Diane Sawyer this morning. After reports circulated yesterday that he’d been invited to appear, with some reporting he was being considered for hosting duties, Romney told Sawyer in an interview for World News Tonight that he doesn’t know how to respond to the invitation just yet.

The word spread quickly after a New York Times report stated Romney had been invited to appear with several sources including The Hollywood Reporter suggesting he had been offered the rare chance (for a politician) to host). Deadline reports today that Romney confirmed to Diane Sawyer that he did in fact receive an invitation from Lorne Michaels over the weekend and is giving it due consideration.

It sounds like the appearance would be a guest spot rather than a hosting gig, and Romney plans to be picky about it. He told Sawyer “It would depend on the nature of the skit.” He added that his requirement would be that it “be funny”. I’m assuming he means funny to him and not just to the rest of us. Romney also says he DVR’s episodes in which Jason Sudeikis portrays him, and thinks his impersonation is “very good”. So he does seem to have a sense of humor in regards to himself, which is a helpful thing for anyone seeking the presidency; after all, there’s no way to escape an SNL skewering in that position.

At any rate, Romney hasn’t decided yet whether he’ll appear, but one other tidbit of information was given: the invitation is in fact for this season, so it will have to happen soon. Romney’s interview with Sawyer will air this evening.
