Psych is quickly approaching its highly anticipated seventh season, and it's confirmed to have an eighth season lined up beyond that. This latest piece of casting news suggests that Season 8 might be the detective show's last, though nothing is confirmed. Maggie Lawson has been tapped to play the female lead in an untitled ABC comedy pilot from Mark and Robb Cullen. It's not unusual for an actor on a show with an uncertain fate to sign on for a pilot "just in case" things don't go well for their current series, but word is, Lawson's new gig is in first position, which means if the pilot moves forward, she's going with it. Since it's hard to imagine Psych (or Shawn) without Juliet around, that could mean Psych is probably on its way out.
TVLine suspects as much in their article, which states that Lawson will star opposite James Caan in ABC's comedy pilot. The project, which was once known as She's Got Balls (ugh) stars Lawson as Terry Gannon, a recently divorced single mom who moves in with her estranged father, a former baseball player who loves his beer. Terry ends up coaching her son's little league baseball team, which draws her "back into the world of sports she vowed to leave behind." I'm assuming her aversion to sports has to do with whatever problems she has with her father. Maybe he was too competitive or put too much pressure on her when she was growing up. Either way, there's definite potential with the premise, and a sort of family-bonding story, with humor and baseball tied in.
It sounds like a great project for Lawson. Of course, Psych fans probably won't appreciate this news if it means Psych's going to be wrapping up. With that in mind, as we mentioned, Season 7 is coming up (premiering February 27) and the show has already been renewed for Season 8. So there's still plenty more Psych to come.
