Roland Emmerich's sweeping disaster porn 2012 was possibly one of the most ridiculous films ever made. Totally hollow, weak characters, but my gods was it pretty to look at and damn entertaining. Early in his press circuit to promote the film, the director let drop some news that the ultra-action packed film would see a TV series follow-up.

The king of catastrophe recently sat down with MovieWeb and, unfortunately for anyone who may have been looking forward to a serialized sequel, confirmed that the 2012 TV show will most likely never happen.

“It's not totally dead. Mark Gordon is still trying to come up with an idea on how to make it cheaper. I don't think it will happen. I had a certain vision. We realized what kind of compromises we were going to have to make. Because of that, I said, 'No thank you.'” -Emmerich to MW

Emmerich explains that the show would have elements of Lost in that it would take place in an island setting, but would become a kind of political show about the survivors from the ships clashing with the inhabitants of Cape Town, South Africa. Maybe if cost is an issue the producers should talk to the team behind Battlestar Galactica about how to make a visually amazing yet politically charged TV show on the cheap.

As much as people love to see the world going to shit, expect another epic from Roland Emmerich very soon. But until then, squash any hopes you had about getting a weekly taste of destruction.
