Because the judges on singing competition shows are getting younger and more relevant, they’ve figured out programs like American Idol and The Voice are the perfect vehicles to get news about a new single out into the universe. I’m not certain I have ever seen anything simultaneously as awe-inspiring and cringe-inducing as seeing the 42-year-old Jennifer Lopez dance around, losing control in her “On The Floor” music video premiere on Idol last season. Now, The Voice has taken a similar cue, allowing judge Adam Levine and his band Maroon 5 to perform during one of last week’s episodes. Fair's fair when there are four musically-inclined egos on the line, and this week judge Blake Shelton will give a live performance a go.
Shelton is set to perform his new single, “Over” during the semifinals round next week. In case you are worried you are going to have to hear Shelton whine about an ended relationship, no worries, Shelton is still happily married and not in sad songwriting funk. The track is more about winning someone over than about endings—although it may not feel that way for some of The Voice contestants come next week.
Shelton’s singing appearance will air Monday, but if that is not enough of an incentive to tune in, last year’s winner and finalists will also be headed to the set on Tuesday. According to THR, Cee Lo Green will actually perform with past contestant Vicci Martinez, and celebrities Kid Cudi and Cyndi Lauper will perform with former contestants Dia Frampton and Beverly McClellan. Season 1 winner Javier Colon will perform his single “A Drop in the Ocean,” in another attempt to actually find fame. We’ll see how that goes.
Monday’s Live show will air on NBC at 8 p.m. ET and Tuesday’s results show begins on NBC at 9 p.m. ET.
