TBS’ is saying goodbye to its first hourlong dramedy, The Wedding Band, which really doesn’t come as much of a surprise considering the timeslot it was given. Even with a good lead-in from The Big Bang Theory, the new series was headed for trouble from the start in a difficult place on the schedule.
The Wedding Band was one of two hourlong projects that were developed back in 2010 for TBS, with the other, Franklin & Bash having gone on to some success on TNT instead. After developing The Wedding Band TBS went right back to doing half-hour comedies, but went ahead and launched the hourlong in November – with a deadly Saturday at 10 p.m. timeslot. Although it did decently at first in the ratings, by the end of its first season the ratings were down and it seemed pretty clear that the series was in trouble. The news was released today of the official cancellation of the show.
The series stars former Beverly Hills, 90210 actor Brian Austin Green, Peter Cambor, Harold Perrineau, and Derek Miller as a group of young men who form a band and play weddings and other events, enjoying the party as they try to figure out their own lives. Although Deadline says the reviews of the show were generally positive, it just couldn’t survive its unfortunate timeslot. The final episode of the first season aired just this past weekend and it didn’t take TBS long to hand down the cancellation word, so it's likely it was already decided. It seems half-hour comedies are a better bet for TBS.
