MTV doesn't play music videos anymore. This is nothing new, and yet people still complain about it. Personally, I can't imagine that MTV would play videos for music I listen to these days even if they did play videos day in and day out as they once did, so it's difficult to find it in myself to complain. Perhaps the gripe is that MTV is depriving kids of the same music video experience we had growing up. When you think about it, it isn't just music that's changed, it's the way kids get their music that's altered drastically. And that's what this video addresses in a funny but harsh kind of way.
This video comes from BFirenzi's YouTube Channel and features a "network head" (or some guy pretending to be a network head) explaining to young Natalie why MTV stopped playing music anymore.
"That complaint is literally old enough to drive a car."
As funny as the above video is, there's probably (at least) some truth to it. In this day and age, do kids need MTV to show them music videos? In "my day" we had to wade through video after video on MTV to see the ones we wanted. Kids don't need to do that anymore. They have YouTube and Twitter and Facebook and whatever else the kids are using to show them their videos when they want them, as often as they want. For music, the internet is to today's youth what MTV was to those of us who grew up in the 80s and 90s.
So, while we can complain that MTV is barely about the music anymore, at the end of the day, they're trying to make money and people watch Jersey Shore. I guess we could resent MTV for refusing to get old with us by adapting to today's television demands, or we can shrug it off and reminisce about the days of spending hours watching music videos, when MTV was the network that brought us the latest music.
