The Double (2014) Synopsis

Eisenberg plays Simon, a timid, isolated man who’s overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams (Wasikowska). The arrival of a new co-worker, James (also played by Eisenberg), serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon's exact physical double and his opposite - confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon's horror, James slowly starts taking over his life.

The Double Pits Jesse Eisenberg Against Himself In This Crazy New Trailer The Double Pits Jesse Eisenberg Against Himself In This Crazy New Trailer

To me, this trailer couldn’t be more engrossing, combining the eccentric universe of a Terry Gilliam comedy with the dexterous narrative of a David Mamet play. The fact that no one can tell the two men look alike is a wonderful touch, and my fingers are crossed that the plot takes some wicked turns once James’ antagonist side breaks loose. And I really hope the feature itself utilizes the same kind of music heard in the trailer, which sounds independently majestic, if that makes any sense.

By replacing any in-film sounds and dialogue with blues legend Sun House’s “Grinnin’ in Your Face,” this trailer comes off as even more offsetting and interesting. I get the feeling that Eisenberg is walking with some nefarious purpose in mind (or minds).

Even though he's not even two years removed from his Best Actor Oscar nomination for The Social Network, Jesse Eisenberg has felt weirdly absent lately. THR describes the film as "funny, frightening and dream-like," so while it might not be as sober and grim as you might expect from Dostoevsky, Ayoade also says it will "reflect on loneliness and our need to love and be loved." It's hard to imagine Ayoade making anything resembling a typical drama

I have no idea why people who cut trailers never seem to learn that this is only a way to make people feel like they don't need to see your movie at all, but whoever's responsible for the trailer for the new thriller The Double definitely hasn't learned this lesson
