The Finest Hours (2016)

Here we are, creeping up on the end of June. 2016 is almost exactly half over, which means there have been a lot of movies to come out. A review of the first six months of the year shows us that there have been some big box office successes, as well as big failures. Now, let's talk about the rest.

The box office closed out one of its strongest Januarys ever with another sequel in the number one spot, only the second new release this month managing to take top honors.

2016 is loaded up with interesting and exciting films this year, including Captain America: Civil War, Ghostbusters, Suicide Squad, Finding Dory and the anticipated Star Wars spinoff, Rogue One.

Between, Marvel, Star Wars and their own animated films, it can be easy to forget that Disney occasionally makes other movies too. The Finest Hours isn’t part of a major franchise or based on a comic book.

We’re finally getting to the end of January – notoriously one of the worst movie months of the year – but we have three flicks coming your way and there might actually be some good stuff coming down the pike.

After three weeks, the movie has managed to continue to hold on to the top spot on the charts… but that just makes us wonder what movie will be the one that eventually knocks the blockbuster off its pedestal.

The next time Chris Pine sets foot onboard a ship as its captain, it won’t be on the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The actor’s upcoming The Finest Hours sees him head a Coast Guard rescue and its first trailer is here.

The question that hangs in the air is, Chris Pine: leading man? He's got a hand in the success of the two Star Trek films, which grossed a combined $852 million in their theatrical runs alone.

Schwentke has entered into negotiations with Disney to direct their in-development adaptation of Casey Sherman and Michael J Tougias's novel "The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard's Most Daring Sea Rescue." The film's title will be truncated to The Finest Hours, and the feature will focus on a dramatic rescue the Coast Guard attempted in 1952 in hopes of saving the crews of two oil tankers that collided off the coast of Cape Cod during a brutal winter storm.

Tim Van Patten has made his name as one of today's biggest TV directors. After a career as an actor, he began helming episodes of different series in 1992, and went on to be a big name over at HBO, working on shows like The Wire, The Sopranos, The Pacific, Game of Thrones, Deadwood, Rome and Sex in the City and, most recently, Boardwalk Empire. After 20 years in the game, however, it would seem he's finally ready for the big screen.
