Director Baz Luhrmann has revealed that he worked extensively with the recently deceased pop star to try and get a song produced for 2013's The Great Gatsby.

The surprising variety of performances he has put on has been what has let Leonardo DiCaprio stand out in Hollywood, but it turns out that there is one particular plot element that appears in a lot of his projects. To put it bluntly: he dies a lot.

While this wide range of awards leaves the opportunity for many films and 3D technicians to garner a bit of acclaim, the big names this year are the Creative Awards' contenders for Best Live-Action 3D Feature: Gravity, The Great Gatsby, The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, Oz the Great and Powerful, and Star Trek Into Darkness.

This year, the Academy tried to spread the wealth musically. When the nominations were announced this morning, the music categories honored a rock band (U2), an idiosyncratic experiment (Her), two animated films (Frozen, Despicable Me 2) and John Williams (The Book Thief). But like each year, there was a whole lot left on the table.

42, at its core, is the story of Jackie Robinson—how he broke the color barrier and how dominated the National League during his first season, but in many ways, it’s also the story of the Dodgers and how men of different backgrounds came together to create something beautiful that still means so much to so many people.

Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby doesn’t pop onscreen, it roars to life in an explosion of color, sound, and lively dialogue. In the latest, he was helped by F. Scott Fitzgerald, who wrote the beloved novel the movie is based on. The rest is all characteristically Luhrmann: loud, vibrant, and opulent.

F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is considered by many to be the greatest book ever written, and as a result has impacted many lives. It turns out that one of the people influenced by the timeless novel is Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin.

It is not an easy thing to be a surprise hit these days. Gatsby was indeed great this weekend. Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic bowed in with $51 million, the third largest opening of the year to date. That was something of a financial coup for Luhrmann as The Great Gatsby made more this weekend than most of his movies have earned domestically during their entire run. But, as great as it was, it still wasn't enough to swing number one.

The glossy literary adaptation is exceeding nearly all box office expectations this weekend, making a whopping $19 million between midnight Thursday and Friday showings, and on track for a $53 million opening

The Great Gatsby was never going to have an opening as huge as Iron Man 3's, or really any movie with a superhero and a lot of explosions, but its box office so far has managed to be surprisingly strong for a film based on a 90-year-old book. Early estimates at Deadline say that Gatsby managed to make $3.2 million from midnight and Thursday night screenings

Like the director's other works, The Great Gatsby is noticeably, unmistakably Luhrmann's and whether or not you believe in his vision is largely dependent on your tolerance of the man's idea of spectacle. It would be nearly impossible to outdo Mr. Fitzgerald, and so Luhrmann tries to visually gives us as different a world as possible while still maintaining the quality of the venerable writer's pages. It's not the movie Fitzgerald would have written, but he was never all that good at creating screenplays, anyway.

The Australian director has defined excess with Moulin Rouge! and showed his willingness to play around with classics in Romeo + Juliet; he seems like exactly the guy who would embrace the new technology of 3D to make something new out of a familiar story, and now he's done exactly that with The Great Gatsby. If you're going to adapt F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel and put hip-hop and Lana del Rey on the soundtrack, why not put it in 3D too?

Like many silent films from the era, this version of Gatsby is believed to be lost, which means it's only this trailer that remains (how miraculous is it that we live in an era where the only remaining bit of a forgotten movie is just available at the click of a button?)

The story behind Gatsby -- at least, early on – focused on the soundtrack, and the collaborators Jay-Z managed to bring in. I’m hoping that the conversation shifts to the performances, and Luhrmann’s visuals panache once people start seeing the movie…

The Gatsby soundtrack is shaping up to be a star-studded affair. Early reports claim that Lady Gaga and Prince were contributing tracks for the album. Adding Beyonce and Andre 3000 ups the album’s already substantial street cred.

Audiences who were fired up for Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby when it was supposed to arrive in theaters last year are going to have to rekindle that passion for the director’s vibrant brand of storytelling. Two new TV spots for the movie that have just been released should help quite a bit .

"As soon as I spoke with Baz and Leonardo, I knew this was the right project,” he said. “The Great Gatsby is that classic American story of ones introduction to extravagance, decadence and illusion. Its ripe for experimentation and ready to be interpreted with a modern twist.

Here’s the odd part: Gatsby is set to open in the States on May 10, going day-and-date in France with the May 15 screening in Cannes. In years past, Cannes has turned down films that have opened elsewhere already, so the fest’s relationship with Luhrmann must have helped solidify Gatsby as the choice to open this year’s Cannes activities.

Jay-Z and singer-songwriter Jeymes Samuel of The Bullitts have been confirmed as working on the film score for Gatsby, as reported on Twitter. “(We) have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby,” Samuels tweeted. “It is too DOPE for words!”
