There is perhaps no impression in the history of Saturday Night Live that has generated more headlines and hot takes than Donald Trump. The longtime pop culture figure and current US President has been portrayed by a half dozen or so cast members, hosts and friends of the show, most prominently by Darrell Hammond, Alec Baldwin and currently, James Austin Johnson. The switch from Hammond to Baldwin in the lead-up to the 2016 Presidential election was especially divisive and almost a decade later, Hammond explained why it happened and how he felt about it.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Hammond admitted he “didn’t like it” but said longtime showrunner Lorne Michaels did what he thought was right. He said the show wanted an impression that was more likely to generate a big response and go viral, and that wasn't his softer take on Trump everyone had already been watching for multiple decades. He said the tough decision “paid off” given how much press it attracted but said coming to terms with it was “tough.” Here’s a portion of his quote…

Hammond’s impression, which Trump was always supportive of, played him as a goofy, buffoonish and larger than life character. He was shown as being out of touch but also funny and almost endearing. It wasn’t particularly nice, but it also wasn’t mean.

The take was broadly popular in the 90s and 2000s when Trump was a tabloid fixture and builder to the stars, but during his first Presidential run, some felt the impression was too soft and needed to be more villainous. Frequent host Alec Baldwin was brought in to offer a new take.

His version was much more aggressively mean. He portrayed Trump as more nakedly evil and played into the future President’s unusual mannerisms and speech patterns. The weekly sketches became major pop culture touchpoints and made the show significantly more divisive politically than it had ever been. It also left it with a lingering reputation that it was biased, which has been hard to shake.

Baldwin stepped away from his impression after the 2020 election, and it was eventually turned over to cast member James Austin Johnson, whose take is a blend of Hammond’s and Baldwin’s. It’s the most accurate, at least from an appearance and speech pattern standpoint, of the three, and it both comments on Trump’s politics, often in a critical way, but also makes him seem funny and human and keeps the essence of why he’s been a source of fascination for so long. Expect SNL to ride with it until he eventually leaves the show.

Fortunately, despite how difficult it was to be pushed aside on the Trump impression, Hammond clearly has maintained a positive relationship with Michaels and a positive relationship with the show. He still serves as the official announcer and is open to making further appearances in an on-screen capacity. Fingers crossed that happens at some point, even if it’s not as the President.

Doing an impression, especially a political impression, isn’t just about sounding like the person or looking like the person. Those things are obviously important, but it’s also about how you’re trying to portray the person. What are you trying to say to the audience about the person you’re doing the impression of? Well, it turns out for Dana Carvey, who recently played President Joe Biden on Saturday Night Live, that last part was very complicated.

Appearing on his podcast Fly On The Wall alongside co-host David Spade, guest Julie Bowen asked him about his Biden impression. More specifically, she asked him what it was like to play such a relevant person on SNL and whether he has any weird or guilty feelings because of how it all turned out. He took a few moments to “gather intellectually” before he gave a really interesting and thoughtful answer…

During his answer, Bowen shouted, “But it’s comedy” and Spade replied, saying, “You’re right. That’s the idea, but that’s not what everyone thinks.”

Clearly, the implication that Spade and Carvey are getting at is that there are some cast members and some people in the comedy world who felt there was a moral responsibility to portray President Biden in a more positive light, or at least not paint him in such a negative light that it could affect how people would vote. SNL has been accused of being left-leaning or outright liberal on a semi-regular basis since the show premiered 50 years ago. If we’re being honest, however, how accurate that is really depends more on the era you’re talking about.

I think that’s best exemplified by the three most popular impressions of Donald Trump. The first one happened before he was President and was done by Darrell Hammond. He played Trump in a very goofy and self-aggrandizing way. It was Trump as a Domino’s spokesman, a larger than life character you couldn’t help but be amused by. Trump has said publicly that he loved it, and it was a staple of the show for many years.

When Trump got into politics, however, SNL switched to an Alec Baldwin impression, which really seemed to highlight the President’s negative qualities. Baldwin repeatedly contorted his face in uncomfortable ways and used changes in vocal pitch to make his portrayal seem more unhinged and villainous. It was very well received on the left and widely disliked by some on the right including President Trump who openly took shots at it.

Now, President Trump is portrayed by James Austin Johnson who does a much more accurate, middle ground impression. It sometimes leans into Trump as a villain, but it also gives him moments of humor, where that weird out of touch billionaire but also relatable everyman quality sort of comes through. It’s a balance of what Hammond did and what Baldwin did.

If we’re being honest, I think Carvey’s impression falls into that third category and is most similar to James Austin Johnson’s. Carvey didn’t shy away from Biden’s problems and often made him look confused and out of touch. He certainly wasn’t trying to paint him as an ideal president or a paragon of intelligence, but at the same time, he also never turned the knife in the way Alec Baldwin did. I think a lot of jokes were left out because they would have come across as mean or painted him as incompetent, which Carvey always stopped short of doing.

Ultimately, we didn’t get as many Carvey appearances as Biden as were originally planned because he, of course, dropped out of the race after his mental fitness was questioned. The original plan was for Carvey to spend the Fall in New York appearing as the President during the election and aftermath, but that plan went south as soon as the debate aired. Instead, we ended up getting some of Carvey’s Biden and some appearances he did as other characters. What could have been.

Given the character’s enduring popularity, I would say Batman is one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood. Of course, we already have such a long list of past (and present) live-action Batman actors, which will soon grow with the upcoming DC movie The Brave and the Bold.

One actor who is surprisingly not on the plentiful list of actors who almost played Batman, however, is Alec Baldwin, despite Quentin Tarantino believing he would have been a great Dark Knight in the 1980s. And yet, a filmmaker who did not share that opinion was 1989’s Batman director Tim Burton, and the Oscar nominee, when appearing on his brother Stephen Baldwin’s podcast, One Bad Movie, shared why.

Why Alec Baldwin Was Not Considered To Play Batman

Alec Baldwin was asked how he felt about being passed on for the lead role in one of the best live-action Batman movies in favor of his co-star from the Beetlejuice cast, Michael Keaton, who was a controversial choice at the time. He responded with the following inside scoop as to why Burton did not choose him to play the superhero, courtesy of his then-wife and 1989 Batman cast member, Kim Basinger:

I have always agreed that the key to a great live-action Batman movie (or even a great animated Batman movie) is a deeper understanding of the man behind the mask – a billionaire tortured by the memory of his parents’ murder. While I am glad the role went to Keaton, who is my all-time favorite actor, I do believe Baldwin possesses the versatility to have been able to pull it off himself.

How The Batman Role Has Affected Some Actors, According To Alec Baldwin

Having later played a character that had some influence on Batman’s creation in 1994’s The Shadow (a comic book movie that might be due for a reboot), it is easy to see why Baldwin harbors no hard feelings about losing to Keaton. However, that is not the only reason he is not disheartened about losing the role, as he went on to say the following during his One Bad Movie appearance:

Baldwin makes a really interesting point here that I can’t believe I never realized before. Keaton, Christian Bale in the Dark Knight trilogy, and, most recently, The Batman’s Robert Pattinson are rare exceptions of actors who, for the most part, prospered wonderfully from playing Bruce Wayne. However, the late Val Kilmer’s career slowed down a bit after 1995’s Batman Forever, George Clooney (who, luckily, would manage to bounce back from it) has openly criticized Batman & Robin and his performance in it, and Ben Affleck faced intense scrutiny when he was cast for what turned out to be some of the most polarizing DC movies ever made.

You could even make arguments for why Batman is a “cursed” role that trace back to the 1960s, as the otherwise beloved Adam West would continue to live in the Dark Knight’s shadow for the remainder of his career. That being said, who knows what would have become of Alec Baldwin if he donned the cape and cowl? On top of that, what will become of whoever represents the Caped Crusader in James Gunn’s new DC Universe? Only time will tell.

The Baldwins is deep into its run on TLC and, for those who haven't heard much about it since the premiere date was announced, now is the time to use that Max subscription. Full transparency, I hadn't given the reality show as much attention as other shows on the 2025 TV schedule but, after hearing this WTF story about Alec Baldwin seeing the penis of Hilaria Baldwin's ex and her reaction to it, I think it's high time I catch up.

As a seasoned 90 Day Fiancé viewer, I'm used to hearing stories about genitals and flashing (as well as people selling fart jars.) That said, I think this story from Alec Baldwin about seeing the dong of one of his wife's exes takes the cake. As the actor hilariously recalled, the situation occurred when he and the Mrs. took in the Broadway play Take Me Out:

The clarinet is not the instrument I would typically liken to that part of the body, but it does make for an interesting visual when this tale is being told. I think I would've gone for a flute above anything else, but maybe a clarinet was more apt for what Alec Baldwin experienced. (He was the one who was there, not me, so who am I to judge his comparisons?)

Seeing your wife's ex-lover nude would be traumatizing enough, but then came the part after the show where the actor met the cast and ended up talking to him. I'm not sure why the actor didn't just dip out early, but I'm glad he didn't, given what ultimately went down:

The story is bonkers enough, but what really sends it over the top is watching Hilaria Baldwin react to Alec telling it. It seems as if she cannot believe he's repeating this story that a mainstream audience will eventually see, and also stunned by just how much her husband remembers about this run-in. Then there are just moments where it seems like all she can do is put her head in her hands. It's great to watch, and those who haven't seen The Baldwins should check out the clip below:

Expect plenty of stories when checking out The Baldwins, including the one I think many who first saw the actor was getting a series wanted to hear about. The series was filmed ahead of the Rust trial, which centered around the unfortunate death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins when Alec Baldwin unknowingly fired a loaded gun at her whilst on set.

The case against the actor was ultimately dismissed due to a failure of evidence, though Alec Baldwin was not aware that would happen when filming the reality series. The show taps into his emotions while dealing with all of that. So the show's subject matter can get heavy though, as the penis story suggests, there also moments that a more lighthearted (if not wildly awkward).

The Baldwins airs on TLC on Sundays at 10:00 p.m. ET. As mentioned, it can also be streamed on Max, where viewers can rewatch this wild moment again and again should they choose to.

TLC is getting a new addition as part of the 2025 TV Schedule, and it’s a big one! Joining the ranks of 90 Day Fiancé, My 600-lb Life, and The 7 Little Johnstons is Alec Baldwin and his family. The show was first announced back in June 2024 with an adorable chaotic video, but now fans of the comedic actor have a concrete date to look forward to as the cable network announced the show will begin airing on Sunday, February 23rd at 1 p.m. It seems like the Badlwins' dream of wanting their own reality TV show is officially coming true, and as a TLC enthusiast, I’m, of course, going to be tuning in to The Baldwins, but that’s not the only reason I’m excited about the new family reality show.

The first official trailer was released on TLC’s official YouTube channel and gives viewers a quick snapshot of what to expect when the show hits the air. Hilaria, who once had to defend her ethnic background, opens it by saying, “Seven children, six animals, two parents, wild family,” and I couldn’t think of a better tagline for the show. The trailer goes on to show the Baldwin parents attempting to juggle their family in humorous, chaotic moments while also touching on deeper problems the family has faced, like Alec’s legal battle surrounding the death of Rust cinematographer Haylna Hutchins.

Unlike most TLC shows, which center on everyday families who may live unordinary lives (like the Duggars in 19 Kids and Counting), this will be one of the network’s first shows to center around a family who is already familiar with the spotlight. After all, the 30 Rock star has had an incredibly successful career as an actor that spans several decades, landed him several award wins and nominations, and even cemented him as a coveted member of SNL’s Five-Timers Club. In some ways, it seems like The Baldwins would have been better suited for Bravo, where other celebrity-centered reality shows have found a home.

As an avid TLC watcher, I’m most interested to see how the cable network handles a show centered around someone of Alec Baldwin’s status. From the trailer, it looks like the show hopes to be just like any other family reality show on the network, diving into various parenting and sibling struggles that arise in every family. However, given the show centers on a well-known actor in an even more well-known family, viewers might be expecting something different.

Even though Alec and Hilaria have kept their seven children mostly out of the spotlight, there’s still a layer of celebrity that surrounds them because of their father’s status. The trailer is proof of this, showing a scene where Hilaria tells her children to ignore the paparazzi attempting to take photos of them playing. That’s something that usually isn’t a problem for TLC families until they have a couple of seasons under their belt and become mini-celebrities in their own right.

I think it’ll be interesting to see TLC position this well-known family as an ordinary one, just like the rest of the families that make up their line-up. I’m also curious to see how the show will balance the everyday moments the show’s premise promises with TLC’s habit of overdramatizing moments. In a way, it might be more challenging for viewers to catch these overproduced moments, given Alec is an actor, but we’ll have to wait and see. I'll certainly be crossing my fingers that The Baldwins becomes one of the best reality TV shows.

Alec Baldwin has had a long and wildly successful career in TV and film, although there's been some controversy surrounding him in recent years. While 30 Rock continues to be re-watched for those with a Peacock subscription, there's been a long legal saga surrounding the death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. And after Baldwin’s Rust criminal case was dropped he shared a sweet family video from Christmas.

The Rust incident put a spotlight on gun safety on sets, and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Rees was sentenced to prison for her part on Hutchins' death. While Baldwin faced his own criminal trial, he got a major legal victory when Santa Fe District Attorney's Office announced they were withdrawing their appeal in his case. Baldwin didn't make any reference to this when posting on Instagram, instead offering a glimpse into his family's Christmas celebration. Check t out below:

Ok, that was pretty cute. There's something universally enjoyable about a burp joke, and especially when a kid is involved. And the audio includes Baldwin's signature laugh, indicating he was tickled. I mean, who doesn't have to burp after eating during the holidays?

News of Baldwin's case being dismissed broke on Christmas Eve, and one has to assume that it added his holiday joy. Prosecutor Kari Morrissey issued a statement (via USA Today) along with the case being dropped, which reads:

That was definitely a clear message. Although since the justice system has played its course, it seems Baldwin may be in the clear for any criminal cases brought against him related to safety on the Rust set.

In the time since Hutchins' death, the 66 year-old Beetlejuice has been fairly synonymous with what happened on the set of Rust. Video from the set showed him even speaking with Hutchins prior to the incident. And since he was both an an actor and producer on the project, there were plenty of people holding his feet to the fire over what happened.

It remains to be seen if Rust ever finishes filming, although that was seemingly the plan. The tragedy has inspired folks like The Rock to ban real fire arms from their sets, in hopes of making it a safer place for all. It remains to be seen what happens with any civil lawsuits Baldwin might still be facing related to Rust. One of the most exclusive clubs in show business just got a new member. SNL’s much-hyped 5-Timers Club opened its arms to funnyman and former cast member Martin Short last night, and there was no shortage of star power there to honor his big moment. Nearly a dozen Hollywood A-listers, in fact, made an appearance in the official 5-Timers Club sketch, and they were each welcomed by a pumped-up crowd stoked to see them back in Studio 8H.

Clocking in at more than nine minutes, the 5-Timers Club took the cold open slot last night, and it rolled out its cameos slowly, giving each of the mega-celebrities a little time to pick up some laughs and really make their presence felt. My favorite segment was definitely the group reveal where everyone went around and dropped a secret about themselves, with the best being Paul Rudd admitting Ant-Man’s powers aren’t good and Tom Hanks hilariously admitting, despite all the hoopla around his early diagnosis, he never actually had Covid. It’s only fitting Saturday Night Live gave us a 5-Timers Club sketch this season because the show is leaning a lot harder into nostalgia because of the milestone. The beloved sketch comedy show is celebrating its 50th Season this year, and while it always works in nostalgia and fun cameos now and again, it’s been especially aggressive about it this season. Former cast members like Maya Rudolph, Dana Carvey and Andy Samberg have contributed to multiple episodes this season, and quite a few others like Adam Sandler and David Spade have shown up for one-offs.

This 5-Timers Club sketch also includes a fun cameo from former cast member Jimmy Fallon. In the sketch, he has a great little moment with Martin Short about laughing at their own jokes, and it struck me as a great example of what has allowed SNL to connect with so many people over the years. When you look down all the 5-Timers Club members in this sketch, it’s clear there’s no specific brand of comedy. How John Mulaney is trying to make people laugh is in no way the same as how Jimmy Fallon is trying to make people laugh or Tina Fey or Alec Baldwin or Kristen Wiig. Melissa McCarthy literally falls through a wall during the sketch. The show is a big tent, and it has always been good about being funny in different ways.

SNL is scheduled for a little holiday hiatus after this week, but it’ll return sometime in the new year with a fresh crop of hosts that haven’t been announced yet. In keeping with the theme of this season, I’d expect to see a good balance of new stars of the moment and some folks who have been around the show plenty in the past.

Alec Baldwin is no stranger to Saturday Night Live and its presidential impressions. In fact, he won an Emmy for his portrayal of Donald Trump. However, that does not mean he’s super comfortable doing them or other political impressions. Recently, he opened up about that and why he still gets “worried” about portraying people like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on the NBC show.

For the first time in a while, Baldwin returned to SNL during a few of its Season 50 episodes that aired on the 2024 TV schedule. In the sketches, rather than playing Trump (who James Austin Johnson now portrays), he appeared as Fox correspondent Bret Baier and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. When asked about returning to the show during a Q&A with Variety, the actor opened up about why he loves doing it as well as the challenges that come with it, explaining:

As Michael Keaton and Charli XCX hosted their episodes of SNL’s 50th Season, Baldwin was among the various high-profile guest stars to pop up in the presidential cold opens alongside Austin Johnson’s Trump. Before that, he appeared on the show fairly consistently to impersonate the president. In Seasons 42, 43, 44, 45 and 46 he showed up as him. Then, he took a three-season break.

During his tenure as SNL’s Trump impressionist, Baldwin was slammed by Trump himself and praised by others. In 2017, he won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his impression, and he was nominated for it in 2018 and 2021 as well. So, as you can see, the response to his performance runs the gamut.

However, doing impressions of folks involved in politics worries Baldwin. In the past, he’s said he was done playing Trump, citing his family and other projects as his reason. Now, in this latest interview, he explained why he can get “worried” about performing as someone like RFK, saying:

As this new presidential chapter begins, it will be interesting to see who Baldwin pops up to play, and how folks respond to it. He’s been doing this for a long time, and he knows the spectrum of responses SNL impressions get.

Another weekend, another piece of political satire from Saturday Night Live amid the 2024 TV schedule. Only a few episodes into Season 50, the storied sketch comedy series has been going all in on election season. One of the biggest highlights in that regard has been the return of Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris. This week, another veteran SNL guest star joined, and it was none other than Alec Baldwin, who famously used to portray Donald Trump. Yet Baldwin didn’t play the former U.S. President this time around, as he was cast in a new role.

This latest episode of SNL featured a cold open that parodied Vice President Kamala Harris’ recent interview with Fox News. While Maya Rudolph reprised Harris, Alec Baldwin was tapped to play the role of Fox correspondent Bret Baier. This was a new look for Baldwin who, as he quipped while in character, looked like “someone made a businessman in Minecraft.” Once Baldwin and Rudolph’s characters got down to business, the latter began grilling the VP, though this approach was more humorous than the actual interview. Overall, the 30 Rock alum did a solid job in the role of Bret Baier, nailing a number of the TV journalist’s mannerisms. The actor’s deadpan delivery as Baier was particularly effective. The Mission: Impossible alum and the show’s writers also generated laughs by taking jabs at the Fox News veteran, such as when the fictional Baier expressed discomfort upon hearing words like “abortion” and “uterus.” All in all, the impression seems to have been effective based on the audience’s reactions.

Those elements aside, the sketch also featured a few other funny moments. Maya Rudolph notched some laughs due to her pop-culture infused portrayal of the VP. During the set, the fictional version of Harris alluded to the viral “demure” trend as well as the fad that’s seen people caption photos with “In da clurb, we all fam.” James Austin Johnson also made a few quick appearances of Donald Trump, which proved to be funny as well.

Alec Baldwin began playing Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live back in 2016 amid coverage of the U.S. Presidential election that year. Years ago, Baldwin revealed he was hesitant to play Trump, as he didn’t think he was the right fit for the role. He ultimately received acclaim for his turn as the politician and media personality and, in 2017, he won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his work. Trump himself slammed Baldwin’s portrayal, ahead of the actor retiring from the role in 2020.

It’s been interesting to see how SNL has gone about handling political subject matter during election season and bringing in guest stars in the process. The writers have seemingly been trying to get more creative, with last week’s episode even featuring a funny politics-themed Family Feud sketch. All the while, the series has brought in Andy Samberg, Jim Gaffigan and Dana Carvey to play First Gentleman Doug Emhoff, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and U.S. President Joe Biden, respectively.

After this episode, which was hosted by Michael Keaton and featured performances from Billie Eilish, what the show’s producers do as the election nears remains to be seen. However, if Alec Baldwin’s recent return suggests anything it’s that the creative team isn’t opposed to bringing in even more star power for its sketches. I’m curious to see what’s on the way and interested in seeing if Baldwin ever plays Bret Baier again.

Tim Burton movies always have a style of their own, and have remained a vital part of pop culture in the decades after classics like Edward Scissorhands hit theaters. Another beloved hit is 1988's Beetlejuice (streaming now with a Max subscription), which is finally getting a sequel in September. Fans are wondering why Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin aren't in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and now Tim Burton has explained his reasoning. 

What we know about Beetlejuice 2 is limited, but the wait is nearly over for its arrival in theaters. While the footage hinted at how Jeffrey Jones' character was being written out, fans have been wondering why Baldwin and Davis didn't get in on the fun. While speaking with People about the upcoming horror movie/comedy, he shared why that pair of actors weren't brought back. In his words: 

Points were made. Despite being a sequel, it sounds like Burton didn't want Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to simply be a rehash of the original. Instead he wanted to tell a new story, one that simply didn't need the characters Barbara and Adam Maitland. We'll just have to wait and see if/how they're referenced in the new movie. 

Tim Burton felt disillusioned by Hollywood prior to filming the Beetlejuice sequel, and his comments about Davis and Baldwin might tie to this. Most long-awaited sequels make it a point to bring back as many legacy characters as possible, in hopes of bringing fans to the theater. But despite how generations of fans may have liked to see the Maitlands back, he was interested in pandering to audiences in that way. While the full ensemble from the original Beetlejuice won't be in the sequel, we've got plenty of returning faces to mix with newcomers like Jenna Ortega and Justin Theroux. Obviously Michael Keaton is back as the title character, and he's joined by Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz and Catherone O'Hara's Delia Deetz. Fans are definitely hyped about seeing the latter actress, following her acclaimed run on Schitt's Creek. 

Another big question surrounding Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is whether or not the movie might set be setting the groundwork for a threequel. The movie's title is a big reason why fans are theorizing, as characters famously have to say the character's name three times to make him appear. We'll just have to wait and see how it all shakes out.

The legal case surrounding the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust has resulted in a number of legal entanglements for those involved in the production. Actor Alec Baldwin has been charged with crimes twice in the case and, now, the case has been dismissed against the actor for the second time, this time with prejudice. But the second time around certainly sparked buzz, as the Internet is having a field day over Baldwin’s reaction to being referred to as a “cocksucker” in open court.

The situation occurred when prosecutor Kari T. Morrissey called herself to the stand to explain how potential evidence had been handled. This evidence was never turned over to the defense during discovery, leading the judge to dismiss the case against Baldwin. However, during cross-examination, Morrissey was asked by Baldwin’s attorney about her personal feelings toward the actor. He accuses the prosecutor of having called Alec Baldwin a “cocksucker” and Baldwin’s reaction is one that likely won't be forgotten. Check it out:

Alec Baldwin was holding the gun on the set of Rust when it went off, killing the film's cinematographer and injuring the director. An investigation into how live ammunition made it on set has yet to fully explain what happened. 

It should be made clear that the situation is a serious one, though people are seemingly finding levity in Baldwin's reaction. He looks like he might not be entirely paying attention to the proceedings, but he is paying full attention when the word gets said. The prosecutor claims to have never used that word when describing the Hunt for Red October alum, but that’s not the point anymore. Under other circumstances, you would expect this moment to be part of some sort of comedic bit, considering how it plays out:

This is even wilder when you realize that this probably shouldn't have been a shock to Baldwin. It’s his lawyer asking the questions and while usually the defendant wouldn't know everything their attorney was going to ask, this one feels like something that would have been discussed. It seems the lawyer heard somewhere that she had allegedly said this, and yet that didn’t come up in a conversation with his client, leading to a moment worthy of 30 Rock, in one fan's opinion:

While the final moments of the Alec Baldwin trial left fans with a laugh, the repercussions of the dismissal are quite serious. Attorneys for Hannah Guitierrez Reed, the armoror on the set of the movie where Halyna Hutchins was shot, have said they will be asking to have her conviction overturned, as the same evidence that was withheld in the Baldwin case is potentially exculpatory for her as well.  Guiterrez Reed was sentenced to 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter.

Since cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died after a prop gun misfire back in October 2021 on the set of Rust, the movie’s star and producer Alec Baldwin has been hit with a series of charges and court dates to determine whether he should serve time for the incident. On Friday, Baldwin could be seen crying and hugging his wife after New Mexico Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the involuntary manslaughter case against Baldwin. A day later, he has now responded to the decision.  

Alec Baldwin Shares Message After Rust Case Dismissal 

Judge Sommer ruled to dismiss Baldwin’s case based on misconduct of police and prosecutors in regards to withholding evidence from the defense in the 2021 Rust incident that led to Hutchins’ untimely death. Here’s how Baldwin responded on his Instagram: 

In the July 12 decision, Sommer shared that “late discovery” of certain evidence “impacted the fundamental fairness of the proceedings.” This evidence was ammunition that was brought to the sheriff’s office in March by a man who claimed it could be related to what happened on the set of Rust.

Baldwin’s lawyers alleged the prosecutors “buried” this information and filed a motion to dismiss the case, which was then approved in court. Sommer said “the state is highly culpable for its failure to provide discovery to the defendant” before saying “dismissal with prejudice is warranted.” 

What Does The Dismissal Mean For Alec Baldwin? 

Now, a dismissal “with prejudice” means that the prosecutors cannot refile the case within that court. One of the prosecutors, Kari Morrissey, said that she respects the court deicsion, but also claimed there is “absolutely no evidence” that the ammunition in question was related to the incident with Halyna Hutchins. The dismissal means Baldwin has dodged what could have been 18 months of prison time after he was hit with an indictment that charged him with involuntary manslaughter from the grand jury of New Mexico in January.

Rust’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was, however, sentenced to prison for 18 months for involuntary manslaughter back in April 2024 after being found guilty in March. At the time of sentencing, Sommer said Gutierrez-Reed “alone turned a safe weapon into a lethal weapon.” 

Baldwin will not be sentenced to involuntary manslaughter, but he and the other producers of Rust are still dealing with civil lawsuits filed by some of Hutchins’ family members along with other crew members. On the other hand, Hutchins’ widower already settled his suit against Baldwin years ago. 

As Alec Baldwin continues to deal with the legal matters of Rust, the actor and his family are getting ready to lead a TLC reality series, The Baldwins, about their family life, which is coming in 2025. 

Alec Baldwin has been in and out of the spotlight over the past few years for tragic reasons, following the shooting on the set of his film Rust that resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in New Mexico in 2021. After some back and forth over involuntary manslaughter charges going back to early 2023, the case has officially been dismissed due to what the judge deemed a "failure" with evidence.

The manslaughter case was dismissed on July 12 after Alec Baldwin's defense attorneys argued that key bits of evidence – bullets that had been given to investigators all the way back in March – had been hidden by the prosecution. According to Variety, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer in Santa Fe, New Mexico sent the jury home on Friday morning despite the previous expectation that they'd hear testimony, then ultimately decided that the case should be dismissed. She said:

The dismissal "with prejudice" means that the case against Baldwin cannot be refiled within that court. The outlet reports that Baldwin exited the courthouse with wife Hilaria, choosing to enter a car rather than speak with assembled media. THR shared more of what Sommer said in her dismissal:

The dismissal is due to how prosecutors and police handled the bullets in question, and Erlinda Ocampo Johnson – one of the two special prosecutors assigned to the case – has resigned. The other special prosecutor, Kari Morrissey, did ultimately speak with press after the dismissal, saying:

The dismissal comes less than a month after trial allegations that Baldwin had fired a blank-filled gun at a crew member before the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins. She was killed in October 2021, with the earliest reports claiming a misfire of what was meant to be Alec Baldwin's prop gun that had killed Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza on the set of Rust. Baldwin was officially charged with involuntary manslaughter in early 2023, as well as the Rust armorer who had been in charge of the weapons.

Charges were later dropped in April of that year, but Baldwin was hit with a new indictment back in January on involuntary manslaughter charges. Earlier this year, armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was sentenced to 18 months in prison after her conviction for involuntary manslaughter. According to TVLine, Baldwin would have faced up to 18 months as well if he'd been found guilty and sentenced instead of his case being dismissed.

At the time of writing, Alec Baldwin has not yet publicly responded to the dismissal of his case.

Carol Willick

Things weren't always easy for Ross (David Schwimmer) and his ex-wife Carol Willick (Jane Sibbett), as the series opened with them navigating not just their divorce, but their unexpected pregnancy and her new relationship. However, they continued to be there for each other when needed — Ross walking Carol down the aisle at her wedding, for instance — and we couldn't help but love her too.

Julie

The six Friends had a lot of girlfriends come and go over the years, but poor Julie (Lauren Tom) was simply a victim of bad timing. She came back into Ross' life just as Rachel was finally reciprocating his years-long crush on her. Julie was never anything but sweet and kind, but nobody could have stood in the way of Ross and Rachel finally getting together.

Richard Burke

Tom Selleck was one of Friends' best guest stars, playing Richard Burke, Monica's fan-favorite Season 2 boyfriend. Forget the fact that he was 21 years older and her dad's best friend. He still fit in just fine with Monica's close-knit friend group, even if Joey and Chandler did see him more as a father figure. Their breakup because Richard didn't want to have more children was truly heartbreaking.

Gunther

No one will ever forget Gunther, the Central Perk barista with hair brighter than the sun. James Michael Tyler stood mostly quietly behind the counter for an impressive 162 episodes, secretly pining for Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) the entire time.

Frank Jr.

Phoebe's half-brother Frank Jr. (Giovanni Ribisi) really seemed to prove which side of the family her wacky personality came from. Frank Jr. was hard to rein in, but he had so much love for his sister, and you can't help but smile at how enthusiastic he was to be having triplets with his wife Alice. Because he never had a dad around, and "now I always will, 'cause, you know, it'll be me!"  

Marcel The Monkey

It was certainly a unique choice of Friends to bring in a pet monkey for Ross. Marcel, who was actually a capuchin named Katie, was a hilarious companion to the newly divorced character in the first season. To this day can Friends fans even hear "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" without thinking of Marcel?

Ugly Naked Guy

It may be strange to love a character whose face we never saw, but Ugly Naked Guy provided quite a few comedic moments for the gang watching him from Monica's apartment.

Rhonda

Sherri Shepherd has said she loved guest starring on Friends as Rhonda, a museum employee who helped Matt LeBlanc's Joey (a new tour guide) navigate the lunchtime situation. Just as Joey was hurt that Ross chose to sit with the other scientists rather than him, we can all understand why Rhonda called out Peter, a fellow employee she'd known since grade school, for the same thing. After all, she shared her pudding with him. She gave him her Snack Pack!

Sandra Green

Marlo Thomas made a few appearances over the years as Rachel's mother Sandra Green, and she was at her best when she was marveling at the life her daughter had created. Sandra had never had to take care of herself, and she admired Rachel for being brave enough to not go through with a wedding to a man she didn't love.

Jack Gellar

Who was more lovable than Ross and Monica's dad Jack? The character, played by Elliott Gould, may have still shown a little favoritism toward Ross, but Jack clearly had a soft spot for his little Harmonica. Fans continue to love him for his musings on being buried at sea, selling ice on the Internet and the sun-dried tomato business. Don't tell me your heart didn't melt when he went to check on Monica (Courteney Cox) after her breakup with Richard.

Estelle Leonard

Estelle Leonard, played by a heavily made-up June Gable, was not the most talented of talent agents, as Joey struggled as an actor possibly more than necessary over the years. However, her exaggerated New York accent and chain-smoking proclivities made for consistent laughs in an unforgettable role.

David

It's hard to believe Hank Azaria appeared in only three episodes as David, the scientist who was forced to move to Minsk (which is not in Russia) so soon after he and Phoebe fell in love. I wouldn't have been upset if she'd ended up with him.

Mike Hannigan

It's hard to argue against Mike Hannigan though. Paul Rudd played a pretty significant role in Seasons 9 and 10, as his character eventually married Phoebe. Mike didn't always understand Phoebe's unconventional ways, but he always allowed her to be herself, even if that meant changing his name to Crap Bag to prove a point to Princess Consuela Banana-Hammock.

Mr. Heckles

Anybody who's ever had a noisy upstairs neighbor can likely relate to Mr. Heckles. Larry Hankin's character was a bizarre one, indeed, as he spent his sporadic appearances either telling Monica and co. to keep it down or insisting that he could have a cat/play the oboe/have birds, etc. According to "The One With the Flashback," we also have Mr. Heckles to thank for Joey and Chandler becoming roommates!

Susan Bunch

Susan Bunch gets a bad rap on Friends, and I honestly don't get it. We all know that Ross was kind of the worst, and nobody got the brunt of his pettiness more than the woman Carol left him for. While their interactions were often strained, Susan was as understanding as possible of Ross' perspective, but she never allowed herself to be pushed aside, especially when it came to Carol or their son Ben, and I love that. 

Eddie

Man alive! Who didn't love this dehydrating maniac? Adam Goldberg played Eddie, Chandler's roommate when Joey temporarily moved into his own place. Eddie didn't always have a strong grasp on reality, and there was really nothing creepier than finding out he liked to sneak into Chandler's room to watch him sleep, but Eddie sure was an amazing character who fans continue to love to this day.

Ursula Buffay

The character of Ursula Buffay originated on Mad About You, with Friends creating Phoebe as her identical twin to justify Lisa Kudrow's appearance on both NBC series. Ursula was the "evil twin" of sorts, just as flighty as Phoebe but with none of the warmth. She was still a heck of a lot of fun to watch.

Leonard Green

It was interesting to get to meet Rachel's dad Leonard Green (Ron Leibman), the man who spoiled his three daughters so shamelessly, but the best part about this character was how ruthless he could be, particularly toward Ross. "Nice hair. What'd you do, swim here?" Classic.

Nora Bing

Like many of the Friends characters, Chandler had a loving but complicated relationship with his mom Nora Bing (Morgan Fairchild), particularly because of her line of work writing erotic novels. But how fun was it for his friends to be able to meet the woman who wrote page 79 of Mistress B... well, never mind.

Jill Green

If there's one thing we learned about Rachel's sisters on Friends, it's that they're used to getting what they want. Reese Witherspoon was a joy to watch as Jill Green, who easily manipulated everyone around her, even dating Ross for no other reason than to prove to Rachel that she could. After all, the only thing she can't have is dairy!

Erica The Birth Mother

Erica (played by Anna Faris) wasn't the brightest crayon in the box, but she made the process of Monica and Chandler adopting her twins extremely easy for them, despite the fact that they lied to her about their identities during their first meeting.

Erika The Obsessed Fan

Brooke Shields went way over the top to play Erika, Joey's stalker who somehow didn't understand that his soap opera character Drake Ramoray didn't exist in the real world. Her hand-licking scene lives in infamy, and who didn't love watching her throw water in Joey's face after she saw him kissing another character on Days of Our Lives? 

Paul Stevens

Things could have gotten all kinds of weird when Rachel started dating Paul Stevens (Bruce Willis), the father of Ross' girlfriend Elizabeth. Oh, and they definitely did get weird, but one can't blame Paul for giving himself that mirror pep talk before he continued his romantic weekend with Rachel. Everybody needs a little reminder that they're a neat guy (and a love machine).

Parker

Alec Baldwin guest-starred as Phoebe's date Parker in Season 8, and how could you not love how excited he got about every little thing? The brake lights were "aglow with the light of a thousand fairies!" The Long Island Expressway was "a concrete miracle!" Parker, I just want to take a mental picture of you ... click!

Pete Becker

Who hasn't dreamed of being pursued by a multi-millionaire? Jon Favreau guest-starred in six episodes as Pete Becker, and I can't even be mad that he tried to woo Monica by leaving $20,000 tips and whisking her away to Rome for pizza on their first date. Too bad their relationship couldn't withstand Pete's dream of becoming the Ultimate Fighting Champion.

Amy Green

While Rachel's sister Jill was defined by her manipulative personality, Amy Green was the very definition of self-centered. Christina Applegate's character couldn't be bothered to learn anyone's name (even Rachel's daughter Emma), constantly mistook Ross for a guy who worked at the falafel stand and somehow still thought she would get custody of Emma if something happened to Ross and Rachel. Talk about a character you loved to hate!

Judy Gellar

Christina Pickles appeared 19 times in Friends' 10 seasons as Monica and Ross' mom Judy, and while the micro-aggressions she hurled at Monica were pretty brutal, it was downright hilarious to see what aspect of her daughter's life she would nit-pick next: The un-fluffed pillow? The "easy" lasagna she made for dinner? Still not having a boyfriend? It was a lot, but it was relatable to a lot of Friends viewers.

Mr. Treeger

Sure, Mr. Treeger made Rachel cry that one time, but he wasn't exactly wrong in calling her out for being spoiled. As far as building superintendents go Michael G. Hagerty's character was a pretty nice one, not evicting Monica from the apartment she was apparently living in illegally. He also had a great storyline where he learned to dance so he could impress a woman he liked at the Super Ball.

Alice Knight

If you can get past the age difference between Frank Jr. and his wife Alice Knight (Debra Jo Rupp), and the fact that he was her student (her BEST student, obviously), the love between them was so undeniable. In pretty much all of their appearances together, they couldn't keep their hands off of each other, and that's one of the things that made Alice such a great side character.

Charlie Wheeler

Ross and Joey each had a lot of girlfriends over the series' 10 seasons, and they both dated Aisha Tyler's Charlie Wheeler. One can certainly see how they'd both be attracted to her, as she was brilliant, beautiful and pretty funny too. Frankly it was also nice to see a Black character with a major storyline.

Kathy

It's a little surprising that Kathy is so beloved by Friends fans, given the fact that she ultimately cheated on both Joey and Chandler. But the Joey situation was just unfortunate, because he was dating other people too, and Paget Brewster's on-screen chemistry with Matthew Perry was simply electric. I join many other Friends fans in wishing she and Chandler had lasted longer ... and ended differently.

Friends may have aired its final episode decades ago, but you know what they say: I'll be there for you, and that includes all of the beloved side characters that we met along the way. Alec Baldwin has had a long and wildly successful career in TV and film, although lately his name is most closely associated to something much darker. In 2021 cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed by a prop gun on the Western Rust. The 30 Rock alum has been the subject of much of the blame, thanks to being a producer on the film and holding the gun as it discharged. While Rust's armorer was sentenced to prison for her role in the Rust tragedy, Alec Baldwin's fate is still unclear. He's on trial now, and TMZ revealed that prosecutors claim that he was negligent with firearms prior to the accident that took Halyna Hutchins' life. Specifically, that the 66 year-old actor pointed and fired a blank round at a crew member to help maintain a level of sight for a take. Given what ultimately happened on the movie's set, this will no doubt turn plenty of heads. 

And there's more that the prosecutors are alleging about Alec Baldwin's behavior with firearms on the set of Rust. Namely that he would frequently using a prop gun to point at things and direct around set. They also claim that he fired a revolver after filming was over and "cut" was called. With all of this, prosecutors are no doubt trying to prove that Baldwin was unsafe with weapons on the movie as a whole. 

Both the public and the movie industry itself has been following the Rust investigations and trials for years now, so there should be plenty of eyes on how the 30 Rock actor's trial ultimately plays out. Prior to this, Baldwin posted a statement and eventually did a TV interview with ABC expressing his regret over what happened to Halyna Hutchins. But even so, he's also maintained his innocence in the situation. 

The incident on the set of Rust started shockwaves within the industry, specifically related to safety on film sets. Dwayne Johnson pledged to stop using real guns on set, despite the cost it'll take to fix it in post. Although despite the tragic events from the set, producers were claiming that Rust will resume filming eventually. 

Alec Baldwin is expected to appear in court in New Mexico when the trial begins at the start of July. Prior to this, his legal team has been trying to get the case thrown out, to no avail. So it's quite possible that he will end up appearing in court, which will no doubt inspire countless headlines.

To say that TLC has a reputation for delivering reality TV programs would be a massive understatement. After all this is the network that produced 90 Day Fiancé, Toddlers & Tiaras and My 600-lb Life. And, of course, the network puts a keen focus on shows that feature families, including Kate Plus 8, Big People, Little World, 19 Kids and Counting. Well, another brood is joining those ranks, and they’re likely familiar to some people already. Alec Baldwin and his family are getting their own show on the network, and they announced the news by way of an adorably chaotic video.

Alec and Hilaria Baldwin announced the upcoming show, The Baldwins, on Instagram, with a fun clip. It starts with the two spouses humorously teasing big news before jokingly scoffing at the notion that they’re expecting another child. From there, Alec narrates, explaining that he and his spouse (who he previously asked fans to follow on social media) are welcoming audiences into their home. He went on to explain that they aim to give the public a look at the “ups and downs” along with “the good, the bad, the wild and the crazy” aspects of their lives. And yes, that includes the couple’s seven children. Check out the clip: 

The Baldwin couple are the proud parents of Carmen Gabriela (10), Rafael Thomas (8), Leonardo Ángel Charles (7), Romeo Alejandro David (5), Eduardo "Edu" Pao Lucas (3), María Lucía Victoria (3) and Ilaria Catalina Irena (19 months). 66-year-old Alec also shares Ireland Baldwin (28) with former wife Kim Basinger. The Mission: Impossible alum married now-40-year-old Hilaria, who had to defend her ethnic background, in 2012 after they began dating in 2012. 

I think it’s fair to say that the teaser above really gives one a sense of what to expect from this show. There are going to be a lot of cute kids and, by the looks of it, their shenanigans are going to factor heavily into the program. One would assume that we’ll also get some occasional peeks into the family patriarch’s acting career. All in all, such a production definitely tracks for TLC and, honestly, I’m surprised it’s only now just happening.

At the end of 2023, Alec Baldwin revealed that he and his wife wanted their own reality TV show. He explained, at the time, that they’d pitched concepts and were hoping that something would come through. One of the biggest reasons he desired such a project was so that he could have a job that would allow him to work from his home in New York. Well, wish granted, Mr. Baldwin.

This show also comes a few years after the on-set death of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who was killed after a prop gun went off amid production on Alec Baldwin’s Rust. Back in January, Baldwin was hit with a new indictment in the case and, as part of it, he could face up to 18 months in prison if found guilty on a charge of involuntary manslaughter. At the same time, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed – the film’s armorer – was found guilty on that charge.

All of that aside though, the Baldwin brood’s show is set to be yet another unpredictable look into the dynamics of an atypical family. Surely, there will be plenty of people who are eager to tune and check out the craziness.

If news of President Trump selling Bibles sounded like a Saturday Night Live sketch to you, we can now officially confirm you’re right. The popular sketch comedy show decided to turn the politician’s latest money-making scheme into a quasi infomercial, and the whole thing is just as outrageous as you might expect.

The sketch was given SNL’s coveted cold open slot, and judging by early reaction on social media, it was absolutely the right choice. The outrageous sales pitch, which comes complete with pictures of Donald Trump inserted into his copy of The Bible, has been viewed on YouTube almost 4X as many times as any non-Weekend Update sketch. Once upon a time, it was a guarantee we’d get a Donald Trump sketch during every single Saturday Night Live episode. The audience’s appetite for all things Trump-related during his first Presidential run was ravenous, and Alec Baldwin was ready to deliver every week. Now, almost a decade later, the general public isn’t quite as hungry for Trump jokes, and with James Austin Johnson boasting a more accurate and less over the top impression, the long-running sketch comedy show is a lot more choosy about when to use it. Thankfully, The Trump Bible was the perfect excuse.

I also think it’s a really fitting example to use to explain how much has changed about how Saturday Night Live treats President Trump. When Alec Baldwin was involved, every single element of the sketch was often turned up as loudly as possible. From his facial expressions to how evil he was depicted as being, it was always as aggressive as possible. Trump was presented as an almost Rasputin-like villainous caricature. Check out this example of an SNL press conference from seven years ago, which includes a much more absurd and outrageous version of the politician...

Now, the show/ James Austin Johnson prefers to take the gist of Trump’s over the top personality and just turn up the heat like thirty percent. That’s why this Bible sketch, while obviously fake, has so many turns of phrase that feel more authentic than what we would have gotten 8 years ago. “Made from 100% Bible” is a great example of that, as is Trump dismissing the women who started the sketch because they didn’t have any more lines. It’s all a lot more subtle. That doesn't mean every single element is realistic or authentic. Obviously the pictures in The Bible are very exaggerated, but the overall tone the show is going for with this is way more grounded.

I have a strong preference for exaggerated realism. I think things that have a connection to reality have the ability to be much more impactful and biting. That's probably why I really enjoy what Johnson and SNL are doing with the Trump impressions, but I suspect the more grounded nature is why these more recent sketches haven't caught on as much as Baldwin's more bombastic version.

Regardless, this sketch was terrific, and it makes me excited to see what Saturday Night Live has in store for the coming election. With more than six months to go until the voting, it’s unclear how much the show will ramp up its political coverage, but whatever they do, hopefully it’ll be as culturally relevant as it has been in the past. 

Saturday Night Live will return the next two weeks with all new episodes and some spectacular guest hosts. Next week, returning cast member Kristen Wiig will do the monologue, and the week after, fans will get Ryan Gosling, who is riding high right now after the whole world loved his “I’m Just Ken” performance at the Oscars. Both should be terrific episodes, and chances are, Johnson's Trump will show up at least once too.

Cut to this past January, Baldwin was indicted (again) for involuntary manslaughter over Hutchins’ death, and his trial will begin in July. However, Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was also put in the legal spotlight, and now we’ve learned that she’s been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, for which she previously pleaded not guilty.

As reported by Variety, this verdict was reached after less than three hours of deliberation by a 12-member jury in the Santa Fe-based trial. Conversely, the jury did not convict Gutierrez-Reed on the separate evidence-tampering charge. She was remanded into custody after the verdict was read, and she now faces up to 18 months in prison, with her sentencing being set for sometime in April.

Per THR, following the shooting that killed Halyna Hutchins and injured Joel Souza, five live rounds were found amidst dummy rounds on the Rust set. While it’s unknown how those live rounds ended up on set, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed’s continually claimed that she’s loaded the revolver Alec Baldwin was holding with dummy rounds. Prosecutors argued at the trial that Gutierrez-Reed was “careless” with handling the firearms and ammunition, whereas the defense claimed that she was, as the outlet described, “the scapegoat for larger safety issues on set that she could not control.” Jason Bowles, her attorney, pointed the blame at Baldwin, who’s also one of Rust’s producers, as well as weapons supplier Seth Kenney.

In order for Gutierrez-Reed to be convicted for involuntary manslaughter, the jury had to agree she acted with "willful disregard for the safety of others,” and that Hutchins’ death was a “foreseeable” consequence of her actions. During her closing argument on Wednesday, prosecutor Kari Morrisey argued that Gutierrez-Reed was responsible for bringing those live rounds to the Rust set and hadn’t done her due diligence to test them to ensure they were dummy rounds, all of which boiled down to an “astonishing” failure to adhere to industry safety practices. Juror Alberto also said this outside of the courthouse: 

Following the Rust shooting, production was suspended until April 2023, though by that point filming had shifted from New Mexico to Montana. Cameras finished rolling on May of the same year. Rust takes place in 1880s Kansas and follows an older outlaw who comes out of hiding to save his 13-year-old grandson from being hanged for an accidental murder, and the two subsequently find themselves on the run from a U.S. Marshal and a bounty hunter. Alec Baldwin’s costars include Patrick Scott McDermott, Travis Fimmel, Frances Fisher and Jake Busey.

Jordan Peele - Monkeypaw Productions

Jordan Peele has become one of the most exciting and interesting directors and producers in recent years. His Monkeypaw Productions has produced or co-produced his own movies, like Get Out, Us, and Nope, as well as other films like Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman, and Adamma Ebo's Honk For Jesus, Save Your Soul.

Tom Hanks - Playtone

Tom Hanks' Playtone has been wildly successful on the big and small screens. With movies starring Hanks like Cast Away, Charlie Wilson's Way, The Polar Express, and Greyhound, as well as films not starring him, like Mamma Mia and its sequel, the company keeps winning. It has also hit it big on TV with shows like Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and John Adams on HBO, and the CNN series about each decade of the last 60 years. 

Elizabeth Banks - Brownstone Productions

Elizabeth Banks has been on a hot streak with her company Brownstone Productions. It's most notable for the Pitch Perfect franchise, but the company has also co-produced movies like 2019's Charlie's Angels, and that surprise 2023 hit about a bear that gets into something it should not have in the woods, with scary (and hilarious) results. 

Reese Witherspoon - Pacific Standard

When Reese Witherspoon started Pacific Standard in 2012, she did so with the express purpose of highlighting and producing projects with strong female leads, crews, and topics. So far, it's been a huge success with films like Gone Girl and Wild, as well as TV shows like The Morning Show, and Big Little Lies. 

Adam Sandler - Happy Madison Productions

Adam Sandler movies are not for everyone, but wow, do they make him a lot of money through his company, Happy Madison. Though the two films it's named after Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison were not his productions, almost everything he's been in since 2000 is, and it continues to make a ton of money for the actor. The company has even dabbled in TV, most notably with The Goldbergs.

Drew Barrymore - Flower Films

Drew Barrymore's company, Flower Films, has produced or co-produced a ton of movies since she founded it in 1999. With movies like Donnie Darko, 50 First Dates, Fever Pitch, and the Charlie's Angels franchise, it is safe to assume Barrymore has made a pretty penny. Of course, it also produces her daytime talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show. 

Queen Latifah - Flavor Unit Entertainment

Queen Latifah's Flavor Unit Entertainment started out producing movies with moderate budgets that she starred in, like The Cookout and Beauty Shop, but these days, it's been successful on TV with her show, The Equalizer.

George Clooney - Smokehouse Pictures

Smokehouse Pictures is the second company founded by George Clooney after he shut down Section Eight Productions in 2006. Most movies he's starred in or directed since 2008 have been produced under the Smokehouse banner, including Leatherheads, Monuments Men, and The Boys In The Boat, plus other projects like Ocean's 8 and Argo.

Sandra Bullock - Fortus Films

Sandra Bullock may not be acting as much these days, but her production company, Fortus Films, is still humming along. Through the company, Bullock has produced movies like Miss Congeniality and its sequel, Two Weeks Notice, and The Lost City.

Courteney Cox - Coquette Productions

Friends star Courteney Cox and her ex-husband David Arquette started Coquette Productions together in 2004. The business relationship continued after the couple split six years later, though they haven't actually produced much in recent years. 

Brad Pitt - Plan B Entertainment

Plan B Entertainment was started by Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, and producer Brad Grey in 2001. In 2004, Pitt and Grey bought Aniston out in the midst of her split from Pitt. Since then, the company has gone on to major success, with three of its movies, The Departed, 12 Years a Slave and Moonlight all winning Best Picture Oscars, with seven others receiving nominations for the award. 

Sterling K. Brown - Indian Meadows Productions

This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown named his production Indian Meadows Productions after the name of the neighborhood he grew up in outside St. Louis. Though it's just getting started, there are some interesting things on the way as Brown's star continues to shine brightly. 

Margot Robbie - LuckyChap Productions

Margot Robbie may have gotten snubbed at the 2024 Oscars for Barbie, but you can be sure she wasn't snubbed out of money as one of the producers of the hit movie. Robbie's company, LuckyChap Productions, has also produced movies Robbie starred in like I, Tonya and Birds of Prey as well as other projects she didn't star in like Saltburn and Promising Young Woman.

Leonardo DiCaprio - Appian Way Productions

Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way Productions produced two Oscar-winners with The Aviator (which won five) and The Revenant (which won three, including Best Actor for DiCaprio). Through the company, DiCaprio not only produced feature films, but documentaries, as well. 

Nicole Kidman - Blossom Films

While Nicole Kidman's Blossom Films has dabbled in movies, most notably the 2011 rom-com Monte Carlo with Selena Gomez, it has found its biggest successes on the small screen. With shows like Big Little Lies, The Undoing, Nine Perfect Strangers, and 2024's Expats. 

Michael Douglas

Further Films, founded by Michael Douglas, doesn't have the portfolio that others may have on this list, as they seem to have found a niche in thrillers and suspense films like Swimfan, Don't Say a Word, 2017's Flatliners, and the streaming show Ratched.

Natalie Portman - Handsomecharlie Films

Natalie Portman named her company, Handsomecharlie Films, after her beloved dog, and she's put together a nice run of movies. She's produced many of her own projects, like No Strings Attached and Jane Got a Gun, as well as a surprise that she didn't star in, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. 

Eddie Murphy - Eddie Murphy Productions

Eddie Murphy started betting on himself early in his career through Eddie Murphy Productions and it has paid off, big time. Starting with Raw in 1987, the company has produced some huge movies for the legendary comedian, including Coming To America, Harlem Nights, Boomarang, The Nutty Professor, and Norbit. 

Barbra Streisand - Barwood Films

Barbra Streisand has produced many of her own projects through her company, Barwood Films. 1976's A Star Is Born, The Prince Of Tides, and Yentl are a few of the examples of her biggest successes. Barwood has also dabbled in TV movies, like the groundbreaking What Makes a Family in 2001, about a lesbian couple having a child together. 

Alec Baldwin - El Dorado Pictures

Alec Baldwin's El Dorado Pictures has been in the news a lot in recent years due to its connection to Rust and the tragic events that occurred on set. Baldwin has produced quite a few of his own projects through the company over the years and even got into the TV game show space with the revival of Match Game, which he also hosted. 

Tina Fey - Little Stranger

Tina Fey has one of the sharpest wits in Hollywood, so it's no surprise she would use those same brains to produce. From critically acclaimed movies like 2024's Mean Girls to wildly successful TV shows including 30 Rock and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Fey, and her company Little Stranger, continue to crush it. 

Laurence Fishburne - Cinema Gypsy Productions

The biggest success Laurence Fishburne and his company Cinema Gypsy Productions has seen thus far is the sitcom black-ish, but he's also produced some great movies of his own that have flown under the radar, but are worth checking out, in Five Fingers and Akeelah and the Bee.

Jodie Foster - Egg Pictures

It's no surprise that an actor and director like Jodie Foster, who has been in show business for basically all of her life, would be a producer as well. Through her Egg Pictures production company, she produced many of her own projects, starting with Nell in 1994 and Home for the Holidays in 1995. She closed the company in 2002 when she decided that producing wasn't for her. 

Clint Eastwood - Malpaso Films

Without question, one of the most successful companies on this list is Malpaso Films, founded by Clint Eastwood. It has served as the production company for almost all of the films Eastwood has directed and its history stretches back to the mid-1960s. Many of his classic films, including Unforgiven, The Bridges of Madison County, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Dirty Harry, Escape from Alcatraz, Million Dollar Baby, Sully, and many more have all been produced or co-produced by Malpaso. 

Halle Berry - 606 Films

Halle Berry's 606 Films has an interesting origin story. Though it was formed as part of her deal to star in Extant, the name has an important meaning. She named it after CA Senate Bill 606, a law intended to protect celebrities' children from the paparazzi.

It was an important issue for Berry, and when the company was formed, her partner, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, said, "606 Films is named for the anti-paparazzi bill, Senate Bill 606, which Halle fought so hard for and won, when no one believed it could be achieved. It truly informs the spirit of our company — making dreams possible, one bill at a time."

Mel Gibson - Icon Productions

Mel Gibson is not the most universally loved man in Hollywood, to be sure, but he's often bet on himself with his Icon Films, and more times than not, it's worked. Since 1989, he's financed many of his own projects completely through Icon, making movies like Hacksaw Ridge, The Passion of the Christ, and We Were Soldiers, plus co-producing maybe his most iconic movie, Braveheart. 

Salma Hayek - Ventanarosa Productions

Ventanarosa Productions, founded by Salma Hayek in 1999 has most often focused on Latin-centric projects, including Hayek's own Frida and the hit TV show, Ugly Betty. Ventanarosa also works throughout Latin America, producing Spanish-language films and TV. 

Will Smith - Overbrook Entertainment

Will Smith grew up in the West Philly neighborhood of Overbrook, which he took for the name of his production company as well, Overbrook Entertainment. Through it, Smith has produced many of his own projects, starting with Ali in 2001. King Richard, for which he infamously won the Oscar for Best Actor in 2022, was also produced by Overbrook. On the small screen, the Netflix hit Cobra Kai is an Overbrook production, as well. 

Amy Poehler - Paper Kite Productions

Amy Poehler's Paper Kite Production has dabbled in movies, but most of its success has been on TV and streaming. With shows like Russian Doll, and Broad City, you can see that Poehler likes sticking with what she knows, comedy. You might be surprised, though, that the company has also found success with reality TV and even feature length documentaries.

Danny DeVito - Jersey Films

Danny DeVito is obviously proud of his New Jersey roots, naming his production company Jersey Films. He also has to be proud of the output from the company with films like Pulp Fiction and Get Shorty. He's found a lot of success on TV too, with Reno 911! Another of Jersey's films, Erin Brockovich, was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 2001.

Charlize Theron - Denver And Delilah Productions

Denver and Delilah Productions' first film was Monster, starring the company's founder, Charlize Theron. That seems to have inspired a bit of a theme, as the company has produced other serial killer-related projects, like Netflix's show Mindhunters, and the HBO docuseries Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York. There are also a few non-serial killer films, like Bombshell, Atomic Blonde, and Murder Mystery.

Will Ferrell - Gary Sanchez Productions

Before Adam McKay and Will Ferrell had their falling out in 2019 and dissolved Gary Sanchez Productions, the company had been wildly successful, releasing some of the funniest movies and shows over the last couple of decades. Step Brothers, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, Daddy's Home, Eastbound & Down, and Drunk History are just a few examples. Add to that a little HBO show called Succession, which has won just a few Emmys, and wow, what a success story. 

As this list shows, success as an actor often leads to success in production as well, so actors will continue to open up their own shops, and will continue to crush it, for sure. 

Much like Morgan Freeman with The Shawshank Redemption and March of the Penguins, or Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver and The Irishman, some Hollywood voices sound as if they’re destined to become cinematic narrators. Another distinct voice in show business is that of Alec Baldwin, who most famously narrated one of the 2000s’ best movies, The Royal Tenenbaums, and, of course, voiced everyone’s favorite boss baby... The Boss Baby from The Boss Baby. 

Although it’s been a few years since The Boss Baby 2: Family Business, the industry hasn’t forgotten of his vocal talents, and Saturday Night Live vet Nasim Pedrad almost may have even roped him into a role for her Roku show Chad; specifically, that of older Chad. I caught up with Nasim Pedrad on behalf of CinemaBlend in anticipation of Chad Season 2, and she explained:

For those of you who don’t know, the show Chad is completely absurd and I love it to pieces. Nasim Pedrad plays Chad, a 14-year-old Persian-American boy trying desperately to fit in who can’t stop getting in his own way. He’s so hilariously cringey that the idea of him growing up to have the charismatic presence of Alec Baldwin really is hilarious, and it tickles me to my core as well. It's not only because the idea is ridiculous, but because it would change the format of the show in a very significant way, making the show feel more like Young Sheldon or The Wonder Years.

It’s just as charming as it is absurd that Chad would grow up to be Alec Baldwin, as he does go through a lot. Pedrad, who also writes and produces the show, also shows how difficult it would be for the children and grandchildren of immigrants to deal with finding their own cultural identity. Thus, she wants us to empathize with Chad, as she continued:

If you check out the video of our interview at the top of this article, you’ll see she almost said that Baldwin was already on board. Though Pedrad was done with SNL, chances are that she kept some friends, and who better than their resident Donald Trump at the time, Alec Baldwin? Chad has had a bit of bad luck, moving from Fox to TBS, then being cancelled on the day it was supposed to premiere Season 2. Maybe the star power of Alec Baldwin would have made for a smoother ride.

I don’t know if you watched Saturday Night Live last night, but if you did, you got a chance to see James Austin Johnson bust out his Donald Trump impression again. I’m not normally one for effusive and over the top praise, but I think his take on the former President is probably the most accurate political impersonation we have ever gotten from SNL. 

I’m definitely not the only one who thinks so either. The response has always been positive, but it's somehow getting even better. If you hop underneath the comments over on YouTube, it’s just a long string of people ranting and raving about how fantastic the impression is and how he’s been able to get everything from his inflection to his mannerisms down perfectly. I mean these comments are just a few of several hundred that mostly say the same thing…

And yet, despite how utterly incredible this impression is, it’s fair to say it hasn’t broken through culturally in the same way so many other SNL impressions have. Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump, as an example, was significantly less accurate than James Austin Johnson’s. It had some of the mannerisms down and the pronunciation on a few words was very accurate, but it was very much an over the top caricature that was not going for absolute authenticity. Pretty much every time he did it, however, it was inescapable the next day. Dozens of outlets wrote stories. Video was all over Twitter. It was everywhere.

Now, I’m not saying James Austin Johnson’s Trump impression isn’t popular. I’m writing this early on Sunday morning, and it’s already surpassed 300,000 views on YouTube, which is two to three times higher than every other sketch SNL did last night, but I think, at this point, it’s fair to ask why it’s so much less popular than Alec Baldwin’s take or even Darrell Hammond’s. I think there are three possibilities. So, let’s review the sketch from last night and then talk out the possibilities…

Maybe People Like A Less Accurate Impression

The first option here is the quality of the impression is actually a net negative. Sometimes people share impersonations of famous people because they want other people to see how accurate they are. Johnson clearly has that down. But sometimes I think they also share impressions because they want the subject matter to look bad. They want people to see the video and see how utterly stupid the person looks, but when the impression is so scary accurate that it’s not exaggerating the absurd or negative qualities, that might be less interesting to some people.

Maybe all those people sharing Alec Baldwin’s Trump impressions were actually doing it because they thought the impression made the President look worse than a normal video of him. The President himself certainly did. Maybe they responded to its inaccuracy in a way they’re not to this one because it’s too accurate. 

Maybe People Aren’t As Excited About Watching Trump-Related Content

Another real possibility here is people are just burned out on Donald Trump. Regardless of what you think of the former President, I think we can all agree he is an absolutely wild character. For a long time, it seemed like the fans and the haters all wanted to consume any and all DJT content, but we’re now getting close to almost a decade of him at the forefront of American politics. The burnout on SNL political content, and specifically the Trump sketches, might not have anything to do with the Trump sketches themselves. We might just be reverting back to a lower, pre-Trump level in which fans liked SNL’s political commentary (particularly the debate sketches) but weren’t necessarily turning in every week specifically for that.

Maybe The Writing Isn't As Good

I think the final possibility is the sketches just aren't as sharp or well-written as we were getting when he ran for President in 2016 or 2020. Watching someone do a spot-on impression might be enough of a draw for 30 seconds, but if we’re going to watch four or five minutes, there needs to be a point of view and/ or funny lines interspersed. Now, to be clear, there are plenty of funny lines in last night’s sketch, but a lot of those funny lines are just sorta thrown in as part of Trump’s stream of consciousness rambling. They’re the type of thing that make me smile, but they’re not like jokes I’d tell other people to watch because they’re so funny.

To Sum Up

I love James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump impression. I am absolutely not making a case that SNL should go in a different direction or bring back Alec Baldwin, who might not even be available for awhile anyway. I’m merely saying that the Trump sketches were once an inescable talking point on Sundays after a new episode. Now, they feel a lot like random sketches that are simply designed to showcase how accurate Johnson’s impression is. 

Something needs to change. I think the writing needs to improve. There needs to be a bit more of a premise behind whatever we’re watching. I also think Johnson would probably get further by occasionally turning up the heat and being a little less accurate in order to really emphasize a personality trait he wants to emphasize. Sometimes a little less authenticity produces something that’s more fun to watch. 

Whether anything changes or not, I'm going to keep watching and keep appreciating what I'm seeing. It's probably the best impression we've ever gotten from SNL, but that doesn't mean it can't be better or there aren't ways to help it connect with more people.

It’s been over two years since the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust, and Alec Baldwin’s legal troubles regarding the event continues. On Friday, it was announced that the actor and producer will go to trial in a new indictment where he is being charged with involuntary manslaughter after his prop gun fired a live round of ammunition on the set of Rust. 

The new indictment comes from a grand jury in New Mexico after a previous indictment about Hutchins' death was dismissed back in April. Per a report from NBC News, Baldwin could face up to 18 months in prison if he is convicted on his charge of involuntary manslaughter.

Alec Baldwin’s lawyers responded to the new developments by sharing that they “look forward to our day in court.” It was previously reported that the case was going to be presented once again to a grand jury. At that time, Baldwin’s legal team called it a “misguided prosecution” before saying that they would “answer any charges in court.” 

This all started, of course, in October 2021 when Baldwin was filming a Western called Rust (of which he’s also an executive producer) when the on-set incident led to Hutchins' death, along with director Joel Souza being injured. These charges are led by a new prosecution team led by Kari T. Morrissey and Jason J. Lewis, who made the decision to present their case to a grand jury, leading therein to this latest indictment. 

In early 2023, both Baldwin and Rust’s armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed were officially charged with involuntary manslaughter. The criminal charges were dropped three months later and Alec Baldwin then returned to set (in a new filming location in Montana) to finish making Rust. The movie wrapped filming one month later in May, and Baldwin shaved the beard he amassed for the Rust role.  

In November, previously-unseen video footage from the Rust set was released and shed light on Baldwin working on gun scenes just days before Halyna Hutchins died after the incident on set. Alec Baldwin was seen firing blanks while rehearsing a scene with a prop gun before expressing concern to the cinematographer about where she was positioned relative to him.  

Both Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed have pleaded not guilty in the past about the incident. Baldwin, in particular, has said in interviews that he didn’t pull the trigger and the gun was declared “cold” (without live ammunition) before he handled it on that day. Gutierrez-Reed’s own trial is set to begin on February 21. Baldwin’s trial date, on the other hand, has yet to be set. We’ll keep you updated here on CinemaBlend as we learn more about the upcoming Rust trials. 

Leading characters draw us into the movies. But every once in a while, a strong supporting player can leave us talking about their scene-stealing performances, or the untapped potential they left on the table because they didn’t get as much screen time as we thought they deserved. The following characters all stood out in their respective films. And the main thing they all have in common is that we all wish they got more time on screen, because they were so much fun.

Les Grossman

The Hollywood satire Tropic Thunder took huge swings at the entertainment industry, with a group of spoiled actors tasked with making a war picture getting mistaken for actual soldiers and getting captured behind enemy lines. But it was an unrecognizable Tom Cruise, playing tough-talking studio executive Les Grossman, who danced away with the picture. There was talk of a Les Grossman movie coming out one day. I hope that’s still on the table. 

Lester Bangs

There’s nothing better than when a young up-and-comer finds the perfect mentor. Philip Seymour Hoffman played that role to perfection in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous. Rock journalist Lester Bangs showed William Miller (Patrick Fugit) what his future could hold, and it wasn’t always bright. But in Hoffman’s hands, it was raw, honest, real, and very uncool.

Blake

Always be closing. It’s a mantra we can all recite because Alec Baldwin was so convincing in the movie adaptation of the brilliant stage play Glengarry Glenn Ross. His character, Blake, is supposed to be motivating a team of salesmen, played by a murderer’s row of character actors (Al Pacino, Ed Harris, and Jack Lemmon). So for any actor to come in and dominate that room is impressive. Plus, the moment Blake’s gone from the screen, you immediately want him back. Leave them wanting more.   

Megan Price

It takes a lot to emerge from the pack of gifted comedians assembled for Bridesmaids and be the one that people are talking about. Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph were at their peak, while Rose Byrne and Ellie Kemper were making noise leading into it. But Melissa McCarthy ripped Bridesmaids away from those ladies, partially by doing something nasty in a sink, but also by creating an unforgettable character who had quirks, compassion, and a formidable funny bone.

Floyd

We didn’t realize at the time of True Romance that we were watching an actor who would go on to become one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. But in his scant few scenes as couch surfer Floyd, Brad Pitt demonstrated his ability to completely lose himself in a character, sell a vibe, and hang with fellow heavy hitters like James Gandolfini and Christian Slater. A star was born. 

Spider-Ham

When the multiverse opened up in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) met all sorts of strange versions of his spider hero. The strangest, and most interesting, had to be the heroic Spider-Ham, a pig in costume who… ate hot dogs? Spider-Verse remains one of the best Spider-Man movies ever made, and it’s because of unexpected inclusions in the cast like this. 

Rod Tidwell

Show him the money, Jerry. At its heart, Jerry Maguire is a love story. It’s also a human journey, where a self-centered sports agent learns how to love himself again. But Jerry Maguire takes flight every time Cuba Gooding Jr. lights up the screen. His football star Rod Tidwell gives Jerry purpose, and Gooding gave Cruise the ideal foil on screen. Like so many people on this list, the role was so good, it earned him an Oscar win. Well deserved.

The Wolf

His name is Winston. He solves problems. He shows up in Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece, Pulp Fiction, at a time when Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent (John Travolta) have a very big one. Harvey Keitel owns the role, but there are so many questions we have regarding The Wolf (including the party he’s throwing, his tuxedo, and how he got to be known for this task), you could easily do a Pulp Fiction spinoff all about him, and I’d watch it a thousand times.

Spike

We have a few people on this list who are bummy roommates stealing scenes by loafing around. That’s how Rhys Ifans steals Notting Hill away from Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. The film is as romantic as they come, but Ifans makes sure all of his scenes as Spike are equally hilarious.

Ken

There are so many Kens to choose from. Barbie Land has its fair share of male dolls. But I have to go with Simu Liu’s competitive Ken, who holds a grudge against Ryan Gosling’s Ken, seems to have the upperhand on him at every turn, and practically demands more screen time so we can figure out what makes this Ken tick.    

Mark Hanna

I don't exactly know what Matthew McConaughey is channeling in his The Wolf of Wall Street scene. I know it's primal. I know it's unpredictable. I know it's unlike anything I have ever seen before. And I know that the movie needed more of it... whatever it is. Now, start beating your chest. 

Captain Dickson

Ice Cube might be a teddy bear in real life, but he portrays “angry” so easily that if he were to yell at me, I’d turn into a puddle. So there’s something special about the way that he yells at Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in 21 Jump Street and its sequel. He makes it funny. Still scary. But also pretty hysterical.

Paloma

The most recent James Bond thriller, No Time to Die, was structured as a sendoff for Daniel Craig. But throughout it, we met a new 007 in Lashana Lynch, and watched Bond fight alongside a feisty agent, Paloma (Ana de Armas), who we’d love to see on screen again.

The Critic

Pixar’s classic, Ratatouille, focuses on a fledgling cook and the rat who helps him create vivid dishes. But they mostly want to please a discerning critic, who picks and chooses his moments, then excels with a return to his childhood courtesy of a bite of food that brings him back. I loved every scene with the Critic in Ratatouille, and wanted more of him. 

Nigel

The three women at the head of The Devil Wears Prada dominate the scene, Meryl Streep is flawless as a fashion editor, while Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt excel as worker bees earning her favor. But the character I wish we had more time with is Nigel, played to crisp perfection by the wonderful Stanley Tucci. He has history with Miranda Priestly, and more story to be told there. 

Rudy Reyes

In a superhero movie, all eyes are on the hero (and also usually the villain). And DC’s most recent Blue Beetle delivered plenty of exciting new twists to the story of Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena), including leaning on his family. And in that tight-knit group we found Rudy Reyes (George Lopez), the paranoid uncle with one eye on the government who also ended up being one of the funniest characters in the DCU. More Rudy, whenever Blue Beetle shows up again in James Gunn’s comic universe. 

Grace

Edie McClurg is a legend. She created so many memorable characters in classic 1980s comedies. For the purpose of this feature, I’m going to single out the clueless receptionist Grace that she played in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. She made a pencil funny. But there has to be an extra shout out for her turn opposite Steve Martin in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. The lady knew how to make the absolute most of her screen time, and it was never enough. 

Chet

The late Bill Paxton made every movie better. Be it Aliens, Apollo 13, Twister, or the hilariously bizarre Weird Science, Paxton committed fully, and demonstrated immense range. Chet might be one of the worst characters created for the screen… but he’s so deliciously evil to his brother in the teen comedy that we relished every moment Paxton was on the screen. Even when he was a blob of garbage. 

Emma Watson

This is a fun aspect of this list. Some people are able to steal scenes by playing themselves. The armageddon spoof This is the End allowed several celebrities to play enhanced versions of their Hollywood personas, and Harry Potter icon Emma Watson seemed to really enjoy lampooning her image during her too-brief cameo. 

Gin Slagel

Bernie Mac left us too soon. The man was a powerhouse comedian, a larger than life personality that owned the screen every moment he occupied it for a comedy, or even a comedic thriller (like as part of the ensembles of the Ocean’s movies). Some might forget that he was a part of Bad Santa, a holiday staple marked by Billy Bob Thornton’s memorably dark performance. But Mac’s role as mall security makes him the ideal foil for Thornton, and he needed plenty more time on the screen. 

Pizza Poppa

If there’s one thing we know about Pizza Poppa (Bruce Campbell), it’s that he gets paid. Sam Raimi loves Campbell. And we love Campbell in Raimi movies, including  when he showed up for an all-too-brief and strange (no pun intended) cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The appearance makes good use of Campbell’s physical comedy, and also leads to a spot-on end credits scene.  

The Bus Driver

There’s a trend on this list. Comedic performers who left us too soon. Chris Farley belongs on that list. And while he will always have his standalone hit in Tommy Boy, but it’s his cameos that hit me the most. I loved him in Adam Sandler’s Billy Madison as the disgruntled bus driver, who amuses himself by stealing kids’ lunches. 

Boris Podgorny

Another one of the classic mentor roles, this one appearing in Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical winner, The Fabelmans. Young Sammy Fabelman needed a voice of reason at an important point in his maturation. It came in the form of his visiting uncle (Judd Hirsch), who shared tales of the circus, and a life spent entertaining. Hirsch was a spark that ignited the story, and his absence was felt during the remainder of the film. 

T.D.K.

Mind you, almost everyone in the opening scene of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad could be on this list. They all exit the screen in spectacular fashion, and much earlier than anticipated. But I’m going with Nathan Fillion’s T.D.K., mainly because of what his power is. And if you don’t know yet, go put this movie on now and enjoy.

Large Marge

Alice Elizabeth Nunn doesn’t have a long list of acting credits. If you, like me, grew up on Tim Burton’s Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, though, you will remember her as Large Marge. Her legend grows by the day. So when you get to the rest stop, tell them Large Marge sent you.

Steven

John Cena has mastered the art of scene stealing. The all-star wrestler seamlessly transitioned over to the silver screen, thanks to hilarious and go-for-broke performances like the one he gives opposite Amy Schumer in Trainwreck. Part of me wishes that Cena got the girl in this movie. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. 

Gloria Cleary

I miss the days when Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson were good for an annual comedy. Wedding Crashers probably ranks as the duo’s best, and while many single out Will Ferrell’s bathrobe-wearing bachelor as the standout character, I wanted more screen time with the irascible Isla Fisher, who goes toe-to-toe with Vaughn and emerges as the most memorable comedian in this wild ensemble. 

Trudi Frazer

Quentin Tarantino is a master at creating unforgettable characters. Even one of the smaller roles will still grab you, and not let go. Young Julia Butters owns the screen opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She’s a savvy kid actor with more confidence than DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton will ever have. I want to know the type of career that Trudi went on to have, because she’s a fascinating slice of a complicated pie that only Tarantino can cook up.

Whiskey

On the surface, it seems like Whiskey (Madelyn Cline) doesn’t belong with the group that has gathered on the island in Glass Onion. But the more that you learn about her, the more you realize she has as many games to play as the rest of them. Cline leaves us wondering how Whiskey earned her seat at the table, but that’s the point of this list. Lingering questions surround almost all of these interesting characters.

Peter

Sugar Bear. Peter (Rob Delaney) is Deadpool’s favorite member of his new super-powered team, X-Force. Peter has no powers. He’s just positive, and willing to play along. He’s the best part of Deadpool 2, and the movie definitely needed more of him.

Gary

"How can that be profitable for Frito Lay?" All that Gary (Jesse Plemons) wants to do is participate in Game Night. Sure, he’s socially awkward. But given the problems that surface in the group as the movie unfurls, Gary would be an ideal player. Just, keep the blood off of his dog, please. 

Chirrut Imwe

Listen, I want more Donnie Yen in everything. He blew us away in John Wick: Chapter 4, and has a rich history of dominating Asian cinema. But it’s his blind hero in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that I think demands more time. And given the existence of Disney+ shows like Andor, I think more Donnie Yen in that Galaxy far far away is a distinct possibility. 

On October 21, 2021, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died on the set of Rust when she was struck by a live round that had contained within a prop revolver. Alec Baldwin, the production’s lead actor, was reportedly handling the gun during that tragic event, and earlier this month, it was reported that the 30 Rock alum could be charged again for his role following a new investigation. Now previously-unseen video footage from the Rust set has been released showing Baldwin working on gun scenes a few days prior to Hutchins’ death.

In a series of videos shared by NBC News, Baldwin is seen practicing firing blanks and rehearsing a scene which involves him using the prop gun. At one point while doing the latter, the actor, who’s also one of Rust’s executive producers, expresses concern to an offscreen Hutchins about where she’s positioned while the scene’s being shot, as he doesn’t want to shoot “toward” her, but “close” to her. In another scene, Baldwin advises the cameraperson to track him and his costar on a smoother path because he doesn’t want them to break their “fucking neck.”

Days later, Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot and Joel Souza was injured by the same round, resulting in Rust halting filming for roughly a year and a half; cameras resumed rolling this past April in Montana, and principal photography concluded towards the end of May. Alec Baldwin has repeatedly denied that he pulled the trigger of the prop gun, but in February 2023, both he and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed were charged with involuntary manslaughter. Although the charges against Baldwin were dropped the following April, Gutierrez-Reed, who pleaded not guilty in August, is set to go on trial next February.

However, as mentioned earlier, Baldwin may not be out of the legal woods just yet. New Mexico prosecutors are determined on re-charging him with manslaughter, and they were set to convene a grand jury on the case today, but the judge has reportedly rescheduled this. As far as these videos go, they were among dozens that special prosecutors requested back in spring, but didn’t receive until October. The report notes that it’s unclear how much of this footage special prosecutors Kari Morrisey and Jason Lewis reviewed with their team, but the videos could be presented before the grand jury.

As far as Rust itself goes, the Western movie is about an outlaw who goes to rescue his grandson when he’s sentenced to hang for an accidental murder, and the two then find themselves being pursued by a U.S. Marshal and a bounty hunter. Baldwin’s cast-mates on Rust include Patrick Scott McDermott, Travis Kimmel, Frances Fisher, Jake Busey, Josh Hopkins and Devon Werkheiser. McDermott and Hopkins respectively replaced Brady Noon and Jensen Ackles, both of whom left the project when filming resumed, the latter due to scheduling conflicts.

Ben Affleck (Daredevil)

Most would agree that he is one of the best live-action Batman actors, but Ben Affleck’s first stab at playing a superhero in 2003 was not very well received. The actor himself wasn't pleased either, as he told EW (via E!) that he agrees Daredevil “didn’t work, at all.” However, he later explained that what he appreciates about DD is that his commitment to accurately portraying Matt Murdock’s blindness paid off, at least.

Christian Bale (Newsies)

Newsies — a musical retelling of the 1899 New York newsboy strike — was a flop for Disney in 1992 but gained a cult following that star Christian Bale is not a part of. He told EW that the “wounds” he feels he suffered from starring in it healed over time. We suppose leading some great live-action Batman movies and winning an Oscar for The Fighter helped him as well. 

Halle Berry (Catwoman) 

When Halle Berry accepted her Razzie for Worst Actress of 2004 for Catwoman in person, she was one of the few actors to do so and thanked Warner Bros. for putting her in such a “god-awful movie.” At least the actor — who also has an Oscar for Monster’s Ball and a few well-received comic book movies under her belt (the X-Men movies) — has a sense of humor about starring in a DC movie that even John Rogers, one of its writers, thinks is bad.

Josh Brolin (Jonah Hex)

Future MCU and Deadpool 2 star Josh Brolin made his comic book movie debut in 2010 as the titular character in the DC Comics-inspired Western, Jonah Hex. The actor (and star of one of the best Neo-Westerns and, simply, best movies of the 2000s, No Country for Old Men) later told CBR (via CinemaBlend) that he would remake it if he had the chance, as he was not happy with how it turned out.

Sandra Bullock (Speed 2: Cruise Control)

Speed is considered one of the best action movies of all time, but Speed 2: Cruise Control is not remembered so fondly by most, including star Sandra Bullock. The Oscar winner brought up the 1997 sequel — which is set on a cruise ship — when asked by TooFab about movies she was initially embarrassed by before coming around later. However she never actually changed her tune on this one.

George Clooney (Batman & Robin)

While there are some people who actually do enjoy Batman & Robin, George Clooney — who played Bruce Wayne in the 1997 flop — is not one of them. On The Graham Norton Show, the Oscar winner talked about his propensity to constantly apologize for, as he believed at the time, ruining the Dark Knight’s big screen legacy forever, before Christopher Nolan saved it.

Sean Connery (The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen)

It's a shame to learn that an actor is not proud of their final live-action acting credit and such is the case with the late Sean Connery and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The former James Bond actor recalled in a 2007 interview unearthed by Heat Vision (via THR) how he tried to salvage the 2003 Alan Moore adaptation in the editing room and described director Stephen Norrington as insane.

David Cross (Alvin And The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked)

According to The Washington Post, David Cross once felt the need to defend his participation in 2007’s Alvin and the Chipmunks, but he wasn't so kind about its 2011 threequel. During an appearance on Conan, the comedian recalled his “miserable” experience making Chipwrecked and recommended that the audience that was present not see the family film.

Viola Davis (The Help)

Even though her performance as 1960s Mississippi maid Abilene expanded her notoriety and earned her an Oscar nomination, Viola Davis regrets starring in 2011’s The Help. As she told Vanity Fair, “there’s a part of me that feels like I betrayed myself, and my people, because I was in a movie that wasn’t ready to [tell the whole truth]” and was “created in the filter and the cesspool of systemic racism.” 

Colin Farrell (Miami Vice)

When Michael Mann brought Miami Vice to the big screen in 2006, the action flick did not get the best reviews, based on its Rotten Tomatoes score of 47%. Lead actor Colin Farrell wasn’t too hot on it either, revealing to Total Film (via Far Out) that he “didn’t like it so much,” adding he felt it was “style over substance." Additionally, he even accepts some of the responsibility for that.

Crispin Glover (Back To The Future)

How could anyone dislike one of the best time travel movies ever made, 1985's Back to the Future? Well, George McFly actor Crispin Glover told AV Club that he felt the ending — which saw Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly return to an alternate present in which his family is rich — sent a misguided message, which is why he opted not to appear in the sequels.

Alec Guinness (Star Wars)

The Force was not strong with the Star Wars movies’ original Obi-Wan Kenobi actor, Alec Guinness, apparently. In 1975, the Oscar winner wrote a letter to his friend, Anne Kaufman — which was quoted in his biography and republished by Business Insider in 2013 — describing George Lucas’ script as “fairy-tale rubbish.”

Katherine Heigl (Knocked Up)

In 2008, Knocked Up cast member Katherine Heigl told Vanity Fair that it was “hard for [her] to love the movie,” as she believed it portrayed women in an unfavorable light. While the 2007 comedy is still remembered as one of the best Judd Apatow movies, the former Grey’s Anatomy cast member’s honest comments about sexism would have a negative impact on her career, unfortunately.

Bob Hoskins (Super Mario Bros.)

In 2011, the late Bob Hoskins was asked by The Guardian about his worst job, biggest disappointment, and element he would edit out from his past? His answer to each question was the infamous video game movie adaptation, Super Mario Bros., from 1993.

Jennifer Lawrence (Passengers)

Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence revealed to The New York Times that Adele actually recommended she should say “no” to 2016’s Passengers — in which she and Chris Pratt's characters wake up from a commercial interplanetary journey way too early. Lawrence then said she wished she hadn't ignored the advice from the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter.

Lindsay Lohan (I Know Who Killed Me)

According to a 2013 report by The Daily Mail, Lindsay Lohan was once tweeted at by a fan who told her she had watched I Know Who Killed Me twice the night before. The Parent Trap star replied by saying this fan had watched the 2007 psychological thriller “two times too many.”

Bill Murray (Garfield)

When Bill Murray said he regretted making Garfield during his iconic Zombieland cameo, that was not just a joke. In fact, it was during an interview with GQ that Murray said the only reason he agreed to voice the 2004 live-action movie’s titular cat was because he thought one of the Coen Brothers was writing it, only to learn too late that the scribe was Joel Cohen.

Paul Newman (The Silver Chalice)

According to the Irish Film Institute, Paul Newman’s choice for the “worst motion picture produced during the 1950s” was his screen acting debut: The Silver Chalice. Despite his feelings about it, the late, legendary actor actually received a “Most Promising Newcomer” Golden Globe nomination for playing the Holy Grail’s sculptor in the 1954 drama.

Robert Pattinson (Twilight)

There's no denying that playing Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies made Robert Pattinson the star he is now, but that doesn't change the fact that he's not big on the films. His 2011 interview with Vanity Fair, in which he says “representing something you don’t particularly like” is “weird” in reference to the teen vampire romance stories, is just one of many times the Batman actor has admitted to this.

Christopher Plummer (The Sound Of Music)

When asked about his most challenging role during a roundtable interview with THR, Christopher Plummer’s answer was Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music. His reasoning was nothing akin to Julie Andrews’ rough time shooting the iconic hill sequence, but was that he found the beloved 1965 musical itself to be “so awful and sentimental and gooey.”

Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern)

Has an actor ever been more shamelessly and frequently vocal about their disdain for their own work than Ryan Reynolds with Green Lantern? Most recently, Reynolds shared his horrified reaction to the 2009 DC flick at London’s Just for Laughs festival in 2023 (according to The Independent). But his most public and unapologetic expression of disappointment can be seen in both Deadpool movies.

Arnold Schwarzenegger (Red Sonja)

While recognized as a cult favorite today, Red Sonja — which is being rebooted — is certainly not a film Arnold Schwarzenegger would call one of his best movies. In fact, the former California governor is quoted in Far Out as saying that he used to punish his children by forcing them to watch the 1985 comic book adaptation, which stars Brigette Nielsen as the titular warrior.

Sylvester Stallone (Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot) 

Apparently, Sylvester Stallone has Arnold Schwarzenegger to blame for his decision to star in Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, which the Rocky star later told Ain’t It Cool News was “one of the worst movies in the entire solar system.” According to SlashFilm, the Terminator star revealed he tricked his then-rival, Stallone, into signing on for the panned 1992 comedy by feigning interest in the script.

Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra)

Radio host Howard Stern once named G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra as guest Channing Tatum’s star-making moment. In turn, Tatum bluntly admitted he hates the 2009 cinematic adaptation of the action figure line, claiming he was “pushed into” making it by Paramount. That explains why he requested to be killed off in the 2013 sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

Charlize Theron (Reindeer Games)

Academy Award winner Charlize Theron did not hold back when telling Esquire that she believes 2000’s Reindeer Games is a “bad, bad, bad movie.” However, she does not regret starring in the Ben Affleck-led Christmas action flick, as it a gave her the chance to work with director John Frankenheimer.

Mark Wahlberg (The Happening)

On a ranked list of M. Night Shyamalan movies, most people might put The Happening at a pretty low spot, including one of its stars. During a press conference for The Fighter, Mark Wahlberg admitted that he does not like The Happening either in an expletive-filled tirade. This came after he revealed that Amy Adams was up for Zooey Deschanel’s part in the unintentionally hilarious 2009 disaster thriller.

Sam Worthington (Clash Of The Titans)

Despite the fact that 2010's Clash of the Titans remake is one of his bigger hits outside of the Avatar movies, Sam Worthington is not a fan. He revealed to IndieWire that he put the blame on his “bland performance” as Perseus and promised to make up for it with the 2012 sequel, Wrath of the Titans.

Gwyneth Paltrow (Shallow Hal)

When Gwyneth Paltrow tested her friend and assistant Kevin Keating’s knowledge of her for a video on Netflix’s X account, he (almost) correctly names her least favorite performance of hers as Rosemary in Shallow Hal. The Academy Award winner and MCU star then describes the Farrelly Brothers’ 2001 fantasy rom-com, which also stars Jack Black, as a “disaster.”

Nicole Kidman (Australia)

Nicole Kidman revealed in an interview with a Sydney radio station (via Daily Mail) that she rarely watches her own movies but did attend the premiere of Australia, which reunited her with Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann. However, she found herself squirming in her seat over her performance in the 2009 romantic period drama, which paired her with Hugh Jackman.

Alec Baldwin (Rock Of Ages)

His fondness for director Adam Shankman and admiration for the all-star cast, including Tom Cruise and Catherine Zeta-Jones, convinced Alec Baldwin to star in Rock of Ages. However, as he revealed in a 2013 interview with American Magazine Media Conference in New York (via The Wrap), the 2012 movie based on a Broadway hit featuring ’80s rock tunes was a “complete disaster” in his eyes.

Brad Pitt (The Devil’s Own)

An action movie starring Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt sounds like a surefire success by those details alone but, as Pitt would share with Newsweek, The Devil’s Own is not all it's cracked up to be. Apparently, the 1997 thriller was a disaster from behind the scenes with the cast and crew being forced to make up the story as they went along after the previous “great script” was “tossed for various reasons.” In addition, Pitt and Ford couldn't get on the same page.

James Franco (Your Highness)

When James Franco jokes about not wanting to do a homemade sequel to 2011’s Your Highness in This is the End, he wasn't exactly kidding. The actor told GQ in 2013 that he thinks the medieval stoner comedy from director David Gordon Green “sucks."

Whether or not you agree with these celebrities’ opinion of their own films, you cannot deny that it takes guts for an actor to admit when one of their own films missed the mark in their eyes.

In recent years, Alec Baldwin’s TV appearances were centered almost entirely on his Donald Trump impersonations for SNL, a gig he lost in November 2020, although he also hosted the now-canceled game show Match Game and starred in Peacock’s killer drama Dr. Death. Now, it sounds like audiences can probably expect to see the Emmy-winning actor hitting the small screen in a completely different way in the near future, as he and wife Hilaria Baldwin are apparently giving some serious thought to heading up their own reality TV series, and it’s hard to argue against their reasoning. 

With his eighth child turning 1 in September, Baldwin is heading up quite the large family, having sired seven children in total with wife Hilaria (as well as daughter Ireland with ex-wife Kim Basinger). And with all seven of those kiddos at age 10 or younger, it’s become all the more difficult for the actor to agree to jobs that would take him far away from home for extended productions. As such, it perhaps shouldn’t have been surprising to hear his response after morning TV mainstay Kelly Ripa suggested on her podcast that the family be at the center of their own reality show. In his words:

New York is home to enough TV and film productions that Baldwin could probably continue leaning heavily into scripted projects without needing to fly around the country, but it would no doubt require more stringent focus to find the perfect job. On the flip side, fronting a reality show centered on the whole Baldwin clan would allow the Will & Grace vet to stick around the homefront while also bringing in paychecks. 

Not that there wouldn’t presumably be a variety of headaches and setbacks when it comes to having a full camera crew inside one’s house capturing footage on a daily basis. But in a situation where that’s the best case scenario, such headaches and setbacks definitely aren’t deal-breakers.

Another reason why opting into a reality show would be a good idea to Alec Baldwin: it’s become increasingly difficult to go on trips with such a large family, particularly when household staff is also included. He shared why flying has become something of a nightmare, saying:

For all that it would make logical sense for Reality TV to come knocking at the family’s door, it’s Alec Baldwin’s film career that has made tons of headlines in the past two years, by way of the yet-to-be-released western Rust. Back in October 2022, we reported on cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’ accidental on-set death by gunshot, with film director Joel Souza also injured in the incident. Though attempts were made to convict Baldwin for involuntary manslaughter, the charges were dropped in April 2023, and the project restarted filming, eventually concluding in May 2023. Things took another turn in October 2023 when it was revealed the case would be heading to a Grand Jury the next month, so the actor may still potentially face some form of consequences.

The way that legal situation plays out will likely have a big impact on whether or not the Baldwin family lands their own reality TV series. In the meantime, fans can look forward to seeing him co-star with Nick Cannon and Mickey Rourke for the action comedy Hollywood Heist.  

It’s almost hard to believe it, but it’s been a few years since the tragic shooting on the set of Rust, which killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Since then the public has watched the investigation occur, and followed Alec Baldwin’s legal battle related to Western. While Baldwin previously got some good news regarding to his defense, it looks like the Rust trial might be going to a grand jury. So he’s not out of the woods yet.

Alec Baldwin was reportedly holding the prop gun when it surprisingly discharged and fired a round that killed Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza. Since he’s also a producer on the movie, plenty of blame has been put on the 30 Rock alum over the years. Baldwin was eventually charged with involuntary manslaughter, and has been working with his legal team on his defense. A new report by Today has revealed that New Mexico prosecutors are set on re-charging Bladwin with manslaughter. One source also revealed that the case will be brought to a Grand Jury in November.

This latest update is no doubt going to go viral, given the public’s ongoing interest in what happened on the set of Rust. Per the insiders who spoke to NBC, a plea deal was recently rescinded over the weekend. So if this report is to be believed, there’s a possibility that Baldwin might end up in court while facing the charges. 

One of the sources also claimed that the investigation gave no evidence that the prop gun was modified or altered. And as such, it might indicate that Baldwin was personally responsible or reckless with the weapon. Only time will tell. His legal team issued a response to this latest turn of events, which reads:

Halyna Hutchins’ death on the Rust set resulted in waves being set across the entertainment industry, specifically related to gun safety on set. Some folks like Dwayne Johnson vowed to stop using real guns on film projects, despite it being more expensive to fix the prop guns in post. If Baldwin is convicted, he could face up to 18 months in prison .

Only time will tell how things ultimately shake up in court, but the public will likely be following along with every update. Despite the tragedy on the set, Rust was making plans to resume filming. But I have to wonder if/when this will begin given Baldwin’s charges as well as the ongoing strikes.

Soap Operas are not usually the first thing we think of when we think of “Prestige Television” but they have been popular since the dawn of TV and without them, some of our favorite stars might not have ever gotten their big break. In honor of that, we’ve compiled quite a list of famous actors who started out in soap operas. 

Brad Pitt (Another World)

There aren’t many bigger stars in the world than Brad Pitt. While he famously made his first mark in pop culture in Thelma & Louise, his first professional, credited acting role came on the soap Another World. The Ocean’s Eleven star played a character named Chris on two episodes in 1987. Little did anyone know just how famous he would soon be. 

Leonardo DiCaprio (Santa Barbara)

Pitt’s co-star in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Leonardo DiCaprio, is also one of the biggest stars in the world. Like Pitt, DiCaprio also can point to a turn on a soap opera early in his career as a launching pad. DiCaprio had a smattering of bit parts before starring in Santa Barbara, but it was five episodes on the soap that really got his career moving. 

Demi Moore (General Hospital)

In the ‘80s and ‘90s, Demi Moore was box office gold with films like St. Elmo’s Fire, A Few Good Men, and Ghost. Moore earned a then-unprecedented $12.5 million with her role in Striptease, but she got her start much more modestly as reporter Jackie Templeton in 85 episodes of General Hospital from 1982 until 1984. 

Marisa Tomei (As The World Turns)

Marisa Tomei’s career went into the stratosphere with her Academy Award-winning turn in My Cousin Vinny in 1992. She’s since been nominated for two more Oscars in her lauded career that all started with the role of Marcy Thompson, as a series regular on As The World Turns for three seasons. 

Alec Baldwin (The Doctors)

The Doctors debuted on NBC in April of 1963, on the very same day as General Hospital premiered on ABC. Unlike GH, which is still on the air, The Doctors lasted only a mere 20 years, but like GH, it helped launch a lot of careers. Alec Baldwin was one of those actors who appeared on the soap, as the character Billy Aldrich for a few years in the early 1980s, years before his big breaks would come in Beetlejuice and The Hunt For Red October. 

Kathy Bates (The Doctors)

Another actor who got her start on the oft-forgotten The Doctors is the great Kathy Bates. Bates worked hard while scratching out a living as an actor in New York City. After scoring just one bit part in the movie Taking Off in 1971, it was another 6 years before she would land a big role, this time on The Doctors.

Laurence Fishburne (One Life To Live)

Laurence Fishburne famously made waves as a teenager starring (as Larry Fishburne) in Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece Apocalypse Now. While the role made him famous, his career started years earlier as Josh Hall in One Life To Live. Fishburne was only 11 years old when he debuted on the show.

Jordana Brewster (As The World Turns)

Jordana Brewster is a star in one of the biggest film franchises in history as Mia Toretto in the Fast & Furious movies. She got her start in one of the biggest soap operas in history as well. After a quick one-off on All My Children in 1995, Brewster landed a regular role on As The World Turns later that same year. She remained on the show for 118 episodes over the next six years. 

Shemar Moore (The Young and the Restless)

For over a decade, Shemar Moore starred as Derek Morgan on the beloved Criminal Minds and then on S.W.A.T for six years. Neither was his first long-time role on television, however, as Moore got his start on eight seasons of The Young and the Restless as Malcolm Winters, a role he’s returned to a number of times, most recently in 2023. 

Tom Selleck (The Young And The Restless)

Another actor who got his start on The Young and the Restless is the legendary TV star Tom Selleck. After bouncing around in bit parts for most of the ‘70s. The Blue Bloods star found a semi-regular role on the soap in 1974. He would later own TV in the ‘80s as Thomas Magnum on one of the greatest TV shows of all time, Magnum PI.

Meg Ryan (As The World Turns)

Meg Ryan was America’s sweetheart in the 1980s and '90s. Before she starred in numerous rom-coms, from When Harry Met Sally To You’ve Got Mail, she was Steve Andropoulos’ sweetheart Betsy on As The World Turns. She would play the role for three years, before snagging a role in a little movie called Top Gun, and off she went to stardom. 

Lauryn Hill (As The World Turns)

It’s not just actors who got their start on soap operas. Singer and rapper Ms. Lauryn Hill is famous for her amazing neo-soul album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998, but seven years before that, and before The Fugees, she starred as Kira Johnson on As The World Turns.

Taye Diggs (Guiding Light)

This one is a bit of a stretch because Taye Diggs had already put together a great career on Broadway, starring in the original cast of Rent and other shows. He did, however, get his regular screen time on Guiding Light in 1997, after a couple of smaller parts on TV. 

Julianne Moore (As The World Turns)

Julianne Moore has won a slew of awards in her career. The Boogie Nights star can boast five Oscar nominations and one win, she has an Emmy, multiple Golden Globe and SAG awards, and even one Daytime Emmy, which she won for Best Actress on the soap As The World Turns in 1988.

David Hasselhoff (The Young And The Restless)

Baywatch might have been a soap opera on the beach, but it wasn’t the first time David Hasselhoff starred in one. The Hoff played Snapper Foster (yes, that’s the name of the character) for seven years in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s on The Young and the Restless, before scoring his gig on Knight Rider. While starring on Knight Rider, The Hoff also appeared on one episode of Santa Barbara.

Mark Hamill (General Hospital)

Stars Wars has often been described as a “space opera” so it only makes sense that Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, got his start on a soap opera. The future superstar started smaller, with a role as Kent Murray on General Hospital for a couple of years right before Star Wars became the biggest thing, well, ever. 

Josh Duhamel (All My Children)

Transformers star Josh Duhamel has starred in 39 movies and had roles on 18 TV shows, including Las Vegas and Jupiter Rising, and it all started with a breakout role on ABC’s All My Children in 1999. He starred on the soap opera for a few years, before moving on, but did return briefly in 2011 to reprise his role as Leo du Pres. He even won a Daytime Emmy in 2002 for his performance. 

Kelly Ripa (All My Children)

Kelly Ripa has been everyone’s favorite morning talk show host for years now and over 30 years ago, she was a dancer on Dance Party USA. Her first serious acting gig came in 1990 as Hayley Vaughan on All My Children, a role she would play for more than a decade. Not only did it jumpstart her career, but the soap played an even more important role in her life, as that’s how she met her husband, Mark Consuelos.

Mark Consuelos (All My Children)

That’s right, Mark Consuelos also began his career on All My Children, playing Mateo Santos on the show for six years. The Riverdale star was a huge hit on the show, and like Ripa, returned in 2010 to help celebrate the show’s 40th anniversary. Consuelos and Ripa married in 1996 while starring on the show together and now almost 30 years later are still working together as co-hosts on Live.

Ryan Phillippe (One Life To Live)

From I Know What You Last Summer to Cruel Intentions, Ryan Phillippe played some iconic parts in the 1990s. It was One Life To Live where he landed his first one, though, in 1992. In the ‘00s, he got more serious, with major roles in Gosford Park and Crash, but none of it might have happened with the soap opera casting him as a teenager. 

Amber Tamblyn (General Hospital)

Amber Tamblyn wasn’t even a teen when she landed her first on-screen role on General Hospital in 1995. The 127 Hours star played Emily Quatermaine for six seasons on the soap.

John Stamos (General Hospital)

Before playing Uncle Jesse on Full House, and before playing bongos for The Beach Boys, John Stamos was breaking hearts as Blackie Parrish on General Hospital for three seasons in the early ‘80s. Stamos even earned a nomination for a Daytime Emmy for the role in 1983.

Mario Van Peebles (One Life To Live)

Mario Van Peebles made his permanent mark on film with his direction of the 1991 classic New Jack City. The cult classic was huge at the time, and Van Peebles has been acting and directing in TV and film ever since, but his career really got going a decade prior to New Jack City when he appeared as Doc Gilmore in One Life To Live in 1982 and 1983. 

Hayden Panettiere (One Life To Live)

“Save the cheerleader, save the world” is a now-legendary catchphrase from the TV series Heroes and the cheerleader was, of course, the great Hayden Panettiere. Panettiere had already scored numerous credits before Heroes, including her first role as a five-year-old One Life To Live for 26 episodes in the mid-'90s. She followed that up as Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light for four seasons.

Justin Hartley (Passions)

Justin Harley was part of the cast that made more TV viewers cry than any other as a part of the brilliant ensemble on This Is Us. Hartley got his start probably making daytime TV fans emotional on the short-lived (by soap opera standards) Passions. After becoming a series regular on Smallville, he returned to daytime TV on The Young and the Restless before landing his award-winning gig on This Is Us. 

Robin Wright (Santa Barbara)

In 1987 Robin Wright became part of cinema history with her role as Buttercup in the much-beloved The Princess Bride. It took a few years of starring on the soap Santa Barbara before she would get that breakout role, but she’s been on top ever since, with iconic roles on the Netflix series House of Cards and in movies like Wonder Woman 1984, which is pretty fitting, as that was the year she started on Santa Barbara.

Lindsay Lohan (Guiding Light and Another World)

Lindsay Lohan’s first movie role was actually two roles in 1998’s The Parent Trap. She immediately endeared herself to audiences, and that love only grew with Freaky Friday and Mean Girls. She’s had an up-and-down career since, but like so many others, that career started as a kid on a soap. Two soaps, actually. First, a brief one-off on Guiding Light, with a reoccurring role on Another World for two seasons. 

Kevin Kline (Search For Tomorrow)

Search for Tomorrow is one of those soaps that despite running for more than 35 years, it’s completely forgotten about today. It was canceled in 1986, but it was around long enough for Kevin Kline to make his first on-screen appearance. The classically trained Kline returned to the stage after leaving the show, but in 1982 he found himself in a role in Sophie’s Choice alongside Meryl Streep, and he’s never looked back. 

Tommy Lee Jones (One Life To Live)

Harvard grad Tommy Lee Jones actually got his first role in the classic Love Story but it was a minor “blink and you’ll miss it” type of role. It was probably his 21 episodes on One Life To Live in the early 1970s that really jumpstarted his now-legendary career. 

Tom Berenger (One Life To Live)

Speaking of One Life to Live in the ‘70s, Platoon star Tom Berenger overlapped with Jones for one season on the long-running soap. Berenger played Tim Siegel for 66 episodes from 1975 until his character’s death just after getting married in the 1976 season. Classic soap opera plot!  

While budgets of soap operas might not be that of prime-time TV, there is undoubtedly plenty of talent on these shows, and has been for many years, as this amazing of list famous actors who started out in soap operas proves. 

It’s rare for a TV show to celebrate its 20th anniversary and still be on the air, but NCIS is one of those lucky few. Two decades ago, just a few months after being established in a two-part backdoor pilot on JAG, Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs and his team started leading their own stories on CBS. But before Harmon was selected for the role, it turns out Harrison Ford and some other A-listers were tossed out as options for bringing the special agent to life.

This was revealed in an oral history published by THR commemorating NCIS’ 20th anniversary, with Charles Floyd Johnson, executive producer on JAG and NCIS, recalling the process of how Gibbs was cast. After Amy Reisenbach, CBS Entertainment president, commended the JAG writers for writing “real people,” Johnson said:

You have to remember that the TV landscape looked a lot different in the early 2000s compared to now, in that it was rare for a thriving movie star to agree to star in a TV show. At this point in time, along with retaining his well-deserved popularity as Han Solo and Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford was also appearing in movies like What Lies Beneath and K-19: The Widowmaker. Peter Golden, the former head of CBS casting, acknowledged this in the article, noting how even if the chances weren’t good for looping in someone of Ford’s caliber, that didn’t stop the people behind a show like JAG from putting him on “the list.”

But it didn’t just end with the man who’s now playing Thaddeus Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Susan Bluestein, the NCIS casting director, didn’t recall Harrison Ford being thrown into consideration, she did remember plenty of other noteworthy names, saying:

All these men would have been major scores for NCIS, and to be fair, some of these actors did go on to lead/play important roles in TV shows, including Baldwin in 30 Rock, Bacon in The Following and City on a Hill, and Swayze in The Beast right before he died. Charles Floyd Johnson also mentioned that Silence of the Lambs and Daredevil’s Scott Glenn was considered “very strongly” for Gibbs, and Susan Bluestein added that he was being considered for Donald “Ducky” Mallard too. Ultimately Glenn, as well as  passed on participating in JAG and NCIS, and while Andrew McCarthy of St. Elmo’s Fire fame also talked with co-creator Donald Bellisario about playing Gibbs, nothing ever came of that.

As far as Mark Harmon goes, he was already a well-established TV presence from shows like St. Elsewhere, Reasonable Doubts and Chicago Hope, so leading a procedural was well within his wheelhouse. Bluestein also had history with Harmon, having cast him to play John Dillinger in a TV movie about the outlaw, and Golden recalled, once the actor met with Bellisario, they “hit it off.” Harmon would go on to play Gibbs for 19 seasons of NCIS, exiting in the episode “Great Wide Open,” and he also made four guest appearances in the spinoff NCIS: New Orleans.

It remains to be seen if Mark Harmon will ever reprise Leroy Jethro Gibbs, especially considering that as of this past July, there’s allegedly some behind-the-scenes drama around his potential NCIS return. Some of the biggest stars in Hollywood are also some of the most often snubbed by the Oscars when it comes to Best Actor and Actress Academy Awards. Legends like Harrison Ford, Jamie Lee Curtis, and many others have somehow had some of the most successful careers in film, but have only been nominated for one Academy Award in the acting categories. 

Harrison Ford - Nominated For Best Actor (Witness)

Harrison Ford is a national treasure, most everyone will agree. Everyone, it seems, except The Academy, as he has only ever nominated once, for 1985’s Witness. This actor has been in two of the biggest franchises in history, plus the two Jack Ryan movies and so much more. He should’ve been nominated for The Fugitive at least. 

Eddie Murphy - Nominated For Best Supporting Actor (Dreamgirls)

Another icon of the late 20th Century and early 21st Century is Eddie Murphy, who has only been nominated once, for Dreamgirls in 2007. This is probably more testament to the Academy's apparent lack of appreciation for some of his best comedic performances because I dare you to find better ones in history than Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop or Coming To America. 

Gwyneth Paltrow - Nominated For Best Actress (Shakespeare In Love)

Gwyneth Paltrow will likely be a polarizing name on this list because the actor herself tends to be, but she’s had a number of wonderful performances over the years. Roles in The Talented Mr. Ripley, Emma, and The Royal Tenenbaums are all worthy of more consideration than she’s received over the years. She's earned just one nomination for Shakespeare in Love, for which she also won. 

Taraji P. Henson - Nominated For Best Supporting Actress (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button)

Taraji P. Henson has been nominated for more than thirty acting awards across her sterling career. Somehow, only one of those was for an Academy Award. Her lone Oscar nomination was for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in 2008, and it’s frankly astounding that’s the only one. At a minimum, she should have been nominated for Hidden Figures alongside her cast-mate Octavia Spencer. Hopefully, this changes with her role in the upcoming remake of The Color Purple. 

Hugh Jackman - Nominated For Best Actor (Les Misérables)

Hugh Jackman is one award away from achieving EGOT status. The “O” is missing and shockingly he’s only been nominated once for an Oscar, for his performance in Les Misérables. The multi-talented Jackman has won so many awards, but is shut out yearly at the Academy Awards. The Oscars may not show much respect to comic book films, but everyone else does, and saying he should have been nominated for Logan isn’t a stretch, nor is saying it about his performance in The Greatest Showman.

Jamie Lee Curtis - Nominated For Best Supporting Actress (Everything Everywhere All At Once)

Jamie Lee Curtis is one of the most versatile actors of her generation. Horror, comedy, drama, she does it all. And yet, she has little to show for it in terms of Oscar nominations. She finally was nominated (and won) for Everything Everywhere All At Once but where were the nominations for My Girl and A Fish Called Wanda?

Salma Hayek - Nominated For Best Actress (Frida)

It’s been more than two decades since Salma Hayek was first nominated for an Oscar, for 2001’s Frida and she’s not been nominated since. Hayek is an icon and one of the most beloved actors today, yet never seems to get the attention of the Academy. This is likely in part due to the discounting of action films, which have become Hayek’s bread and butter, but that doesn’t mean her performances in movies like Traffic and Beatriz at Dinner weren't worthy of attention.

Matthew McConaughey - Nominated For Best Actor (Dallas Buyers Club)

When Matthew McConaughey won the Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club after being nominated for the first and only time, he led his speech with his trademark “Alright, alright, alright” and while his role in Dazed and Confused is a classic, he certainly deserved nominations for other roles, like how about a nod for his supporting role in The Wolf Of Wall Street or his performance in the vastly underrated Mud?

Samuel L. Jackson - Nominated For Best Supporting Actor (Pulp Fiction)

If there is anyone on the list that should be a perennial nominee, it’s Samuel L. Jackson. His lone nomination came from his unforgettable and meme-able turn in Pulp Fiction, but he’s an actor who steals every scene he's in, in a good way. Just his roles in Quentin Tarantino films alone, like Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight, are worthy of nominations, but it hasn’t happened, sadly. Thankfully for all of us, Jackson was given an honorary Oscar in 2021 for his contributions to film, which is some consolation. 

Uma Thurman - Nominated For Best Supporting Actress (Pulp Fiction)

Speaking of Pulp Fiction, the Tarantino classic also led to Uma Thurman’s one and only Academy Award nomination. Despite being one of the biggest stars on the planet, Thurman seems to have no luck getting the attention of the Academy. One role that really stands out is in the under-appreciated Prime. 

Benedict Cumberbatch - Nominated For Best Actor (The Imitation Game)

One has to believe that more nominations will be coming for Benedict Cumberbatch. Thus far, his only acknowledgment from the Oscars was for his wonderful performance as Alan Turing in The Imitation Game. There are plenty of other roles he could have been nominated for, especially as William Bulger in Black Mass and Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate and that’s just the roles in which he’s played real people! 

Mark Wahlberg - Nominated For Best Supporting Actor (The Departed)

In 1990, no one would have expected “Marky” Mark Wahlberg to appear on any kind of list like that, but almost 35 years later, it’s astounding his only Oscar nomination has been for The Departed (one of our picks for the 100 best movies of the 2000s). You have to question why he was ignored for Boogie Nights, for sure. The Fighter is another clear snub, though he was technically nominated for Best Picture as a producer of the film. 

Halle Berry - Nominated For Beat Actress (Monster's Ball)

When Halle Berry earned her one Oscar nomination for 2001’s Monster’s Ball, she was the odds-on favorite to win. She had become one of the biggest stars of the 1990s and now was her time to shine. She won, of course, but sadly, it would be the last time Berry would be nominated, so far, at least. It’s a shame because there are plenty of roles she’d be deserving of a nomination, like Frankie & Alice, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Laurence Fishburne - Nominated For Best Actor (What's Love Got To Do With It)

This could be the most shocking on the list. At first thought, you might guess Laurence Fishburne was nominated for his amazing work as Furious Styles in Boyz n the Hood or Professor Phipps in John Singleton’s other masterpiece, Higher Learning. Alas, the Matrix star has only one nomination, for playing Ike Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It, and he didn’t win. 

Josh Brolin  - Nominated For Best Supporting Actor (Milk)

Josh Brolin has been a favorite since he was a teenager in The Goonies. He’s also starred in some powerhouse movies, like Sicario and, most of all, No Country For Old Men. No Country won a slew of Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor for Javier Barden, and yet Brolin wasn’t even nominated. It frankly doesn’t make sense. Brolin’s lone nomination came from his wonderful performance in Milk, but that was the year that the late Heath Ledger won for The Dark Knight.

Sharon Stone - Nominated For Best Actress (Casino)

You could argue that while Sharon Stone was brilliant in Casino, it wasn’t even her best performance, though it’s the only time she’s been nominated. She wasn’t nominated for Basic Instinct, despite winning the Golden Globe for the role, nor for the underrated The Muse in 2000. At least we have Casino. 

Tilda Swinton - Nominated For For Best Supporting Actress (Michael Clayton)

2007's Michael Clayton was awash in acting nominations, including George Clooney for Best Actor and Tom Wilkinson for Best Supporting Actor. The only winner of the night, though, was Tilda Swinton for Best Supporting Actress. Over her incredible career, Swinton has been honored for other roles, like her parts in The Deep End, We Need to Talk About Kevin, and even Snowpiercer, but this remains her only Oscar nod. 

Liam Neeson - Nominated For Best Actor (Schindler’s List)

Long before Liam Neeson re-invented himself as an action star in summer blockbusters, he was a character actor carving out a nice career in film. Then came the epic Schindler's List. He was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor in a movie, though he lost out to Tom Hanks for Philadelphia. Setting aside his brilliance as James Bond, Connery should’ve earned nods for The Hunt For Red October, and The Name Of The Rose, at least. Instead, his only nomination came for The Untouchables, which, thankfully, he won. 

Alec Baldwin - Nominated For Best Supporting Actor (The Cooler)

Another fantastic performance in The Hunt for Red October that didn’t get recognition is Alec Baldwin’s as Jack Ryan. Baldwin could’ve been nominated for either of his two on-screen performances in 1992, Glengarry Glen Ross, and Prelude To A Kiss, but again he was snubbed. His only nomination came for his role in The Cooler.

Diane Lane - Nominated For Best Actress (Unfaithful)

Diane Lane found her footing in film in the late 1990s with outstanding performances in movies like A Walk on the Moon and The Perfect Storm, either of which could've been award-winning. Instead, it wasn't until 2002's Unfaithful that she got the recognition she deserved when she was nominated for Best Actress. 

Bill Murray - Nominated For Best Actor (Lost in Translation)

The Academy has missed out on great performances by one of the best comedic actors the world has ever seen in Bill Murray. Stripes, Ghostbusters, What About Bob?, and Groundhog's Day are some of the most beloved comedies of all time, and Murray was never recognized. Nor was he for his brilliant turns in Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums. Murray's sole nomination came, deservingly, for 2003's Lost In Translation. 

Jennifer Connelly - Nominated For Best Supporting Actress (A Beautiful Mind)

Jennifer Connelly has been wowing audiences for decades, including in 2022's massive hit Top Gun: Maverick. It appears though, that she has not been wowing the Academy, as she's only ever been nominated for one Oscar, which she won, for her role in 2001's A Beautiful Mind. Other roles have earned her other awards, like her parts in Requiem For A Dream and The House of Sand and Fog, but to date, nothing from the Academy Awards. 

Kathleen Turner - Nominated For Best Actress (Peggy Sue Got Married)

Despite massive hits like Body Heat, Serial Mom, and of course, Romancing The Stone, Kathleen Turner has only earned one Oscar nomination, for the vastly underrated Francis Ford Coppola film from 1986, Peggy Sue Got Married. Surely this icon of the screen deserves more. 

Robert Redford - Nominated For Best Actor (The Sting)

It’s astounding that the great Robert Redford has only one acting nomination in his whole career, for The Sting. Though he defined what a movie star is, Redford never received Oscar attention for roles in All The President’s Men, All Is Lost, Out Of Africa, and Three Days of the Condor, among many others. The list is endless here. He has been nominated twice for Best Director, for Ordinary People and Quiz Show, and won for the former. Redford also received an Honorary Oscar in 2002.

Catherine Zeta-Jones - Nominated For Best Actress (Chicago)

At the 75th Academy Awards, Chicago was the biggest winner of the night, garnering 13 nominations and winning six of them, including Catherine Zeta-Jones for Best Actress. Alas, this, so far, is the only time the Welsh actress has even been nominated, despite powerhouse roles in Traffic and Entrapment. At least she shares this dubious distinction with her husband Michael Douglas. 

Micheal Douglas - Nominated For Best Actor (Wall Street)

Gordon Gekko in Wall Street is one of the all-time great cinema villains and Michael Douglas richly deserved the Academy Award he won for playing the part in 1988. An actor with a slew of amazing performances from Falling Down, to Traffic, to Fatal Attraction and more, with only one acting nomination. He was also nominated/won for Best Picture in 1976 as the producer of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. 

Lauren Bacall - Nominated For Best Supporting Actress (The Mirror Has Two Faces)

Lauren Bacall was one of the true icons of the Golden Age of Hollywood, starring in such films as The Big Sleep, Key Largo, and many, many more over her career. Shockingly, it took until 1997 for the Academy to recognize her work when she was finally nominated for a Best Supporting Actress role for The Mirror Has Two Faces. She did finally receive a well-deserved honorary Oscar in 2000. 

Kevin Costner - Nominated For Best Actor (Dances With Wolves)

Dances With Wolves was the darling of the Oscars in 1991. It was nominated for 12 awards, winning seven, including Best Director for Kevin Costner and Best Picture, which Costner won as a producer. It was also the one and only time Costner has been nominated for an acting Academy Award. There are so many other iconic parts he should’ve gotten more credit for, like JFK, Bull Durham, The Untouchables, and Hidden Figures, just to name a few. 

It just goes to show that even being a huge box office draw, and a megastar doesn't mean you'll get recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Oscars are incredibly hard to win and even being nominated is an honor, they say. Still, for everyone on the list, you'd think they'd have more than one.  

When Alec Baldwin’s Alan Hunley was introduced in Mission: Impossible — Rouge Nation, he was initially depicted as the CIA director who instigated the shutdown of the Impossible Mission Force and was no fan of Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. By the end of that movie though, he’d changed his tune, to the point that he became the new IMF Secretary and one of Ethan’s biggest supporters. Sadly, Hunley was killed in the next movie, Fallout, but filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie has revealed that he crafted an intriguing way to feature Baldwin’s character in Dead Reckoning Part One, one of the more recent 2023 new movie release.

McQuarrie stopped by The Empire Spoiler Special Film Podcast to talk about his work on Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, the seventh installment in this film series. On the subject of Alec Baldwin, the writer/director who’s been leading the charge on the Mission: Impossible franchise since Rogue Nation said these words about how he’d thought about incorporating Alan Hunley despite the character being dead (via Comicbook.com):

For those in need of a refresher, Alan Hunley met his demise at the hands of Henry Cavill’s August Walker, the CIA assassin who was revealed to be the extremist known as John Lark. Hunley attempted to stop August from escaping from one of the IMF’s safe houses, and he was fatally stabbed for his trouble. With his dying breath, he instructed Ethan Hunt to chase after August with a simple “Go” (which Cruise himself wrote and was literally phoned in). Remind yourself what happened in the rest of Fallout by streaming it with your Paramount+ subscription.

Interestingly enough, back in January 2019, six months after Fallout was released, it was rumored that Alec Baldwin and Henry Cavill might appear in Mission: Impossible 7, and now we know the former was at least accurate. Although there are many fantastical elements at play in this franchise, resurrection isn’t one of them, so Christopher McQuarrie instead envisioned looking in at a moment between Hunley and Ethan pre-Fallout. Going off the filmmaker’s description, it doesn’t sound like we would have seen a “spirit” version of Hunley next to Ethan after the flashback was over, but the late IMF leader still would have been on our main protagonist’s mind throughout the Dead Reckoning Part One story.

The fact that McQuarrie went into so much detail about his scrapped Alan Hunley plan arguably suggests he has no intention to recycle it for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two, which opens on June 28, 2024. Should that not be the case, or if the eighth Mission: Impossible movie finds a different way to squeeze in Alan Hunley, we’ll let you know. Until then, Dead Reckoning Part One’s theatrical run is wrapping up, and it will reportedly be available to buy digitally starting October 10.

Actor Alec Baldwin has had a long career in TV and film, although in the last few years his name has become synonymous with the tragedy that occurred on the set of his forthcoming movie Rust. A prop gun discharged back in October of 2021, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in the process. Baldwin and others were charged in relation to this incident, although some of them were dropped. Now Baldwin could be charged against after the latest investigation related to the Rust tragedy. 

Following the accident that killed Halyna Hutchins, Alec Baldwin has spoken out about the tragedy, while also facing a long legal battle to avoid jailtime. Although Baldwin got some good news related to those charges, things could potentially take another turn. Variety just revealed that a forensic report claims that the trigger on the prop weapon was indeed pulled. Since the 30 Rock actor was holding said prop when it discharged, this report could seemingly open the door for more charges against him. Part of the report reads:

According to this latest update, the Colt .45 revolver that killed Halyna Hutchins couldn’t have discharged without the trigger being pulled. Alec Baldwin has denied that he ever pulled the trigger on the weapon, so this is potentially a major development. We’ll just have to see if new charges are filed against Baldwin, who is both an actor, producer, and story writer on Rust.

Baldwin was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter in January of this year, as was Rust’s armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. Things were looking up for him when the charge was dropped, with the defense claiming that the gun had been modified, and therefore would behave differently. But the latest report seems to contradict that.

Of course, Alec Baldwin wasn’t the only person facing legal issues related to Halyna Hutchins’ traffic death. Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was also charged with involuntary manslaughter, as she served as the movie’s Armorer and therefore presumably would have known if a live round made its way into a prop weapon. For her part, Gutierrez-Reed issued her own lawsuit against the gun supplier who she bought the rounds from. She’s also been claiming that she was overworked on the set of Rust, as she had to do other work besides being the movie’s armorer.

It has been nearly two years since the tragic on-set incident on Alec Baldwin's western film Rust that led to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. In that time a great deal of legal action, both civil and criminal, has transpired. What remains as the only criminal action resulting from the incident is moving forward, as armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has entered a plea in the involuntary manslaughter case against her.

Gutierrez has pled not guilty to two counts of manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, and involuntary manslaughter in the commission of a lawful. Each charge carries a possible 18-month sentence. Jury selection in the case is set to begin on December 5. The armorer remains out on bail, though she is not allowed to handle any firearms as a condition of her bail. In a statement to People, her lawyers stated…

While not laying out the defense’s case directly, the statement seems to indicate that the plan will be to try and show that the problems on the set of the Western film Rust that led to the death of Halyna Hutchins were not the fault of Gutierrez.

The case against the armorer hinges on the question of how the live ammunition ended up in the pistol on set. Gutierrez has maintained that she does not know how that happened. In statements from her attorneys in the days following the incident, it was stated that Gutierrez has been denied the training she had asked for, had been overworked due to being on set as both an armorer and a props assistant, and that there was a lack of safety meetings on set. 

In October 2021 on the set of Rust in New Mexico actor Alec Baldwin fired a gun that, rather than containing blanks, was loaded with live ammunition. The gun discharged, hitting both Hutchins and the film’s director Joel Souza. Souza survived his injuries but Hutchins was killed.

In the ensuing months, an investigation was undertaken attempting to understand how the on-set pistol was not only loaded with live ammunition but how it went off. Both Guiterrez and Alec Baldwin were originally charged with manslaughter. The charges against Baldwin were dropped before trial, as it was discovered that the gun may have malfunctioned, which would mitigate Baldwin’s blame. However, prosecutors have made it clear that as the investigation into the incident continues, charges could be refiled. Baldwin has consistently argued that he never pulled the trigger on the gun.

Production on Rust, which also co-stars Jensen Ackles stopped following Hutchins' death but it was restarted and production wrapped earlier this year.  

It was a massive story, and one that continues to have repercussions on the film industry to this day. On the New Mexico set of an independent film Rust, producer and star Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun. A live round was discharged, and Ukrainian cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed. There were investigations into Baldwin’s knowledge of the prop, and criminal charges brought up against Baldwin that eventually were dropped. But the news of the Rust incident sent shockwaves through the industry. And made it all the way to the set of Marvel’s new show, Secret Invasion.

In Secret Invasion, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) are working together to quash a Skrull uprising. And as episodes roll along, we are learning that more people in the MCU may or may not be Skrulls. Jackson and co-star Charlayne Woodard, in a recent episode, had a tense face off at a dinner table that involved guns being pointed and fired. And while that scene, alone, would have been emotionally complicated, Woodard told me why there was added weight to the sequence.  

During an interview on behalf of Secret Invasion, Woodard talked about that confrontation and said to CinemaBlend:

As I imagine it would be. Hearing about a tragedy like the one that happened on Rust, and then having to fire off a prop weapon yourself would have to be nerve-wracking. Even with the armourer being as cautious as possible, the actors no doubt had to feel in the backs of their minds that there was a possibility of an accident happening. And on top of that, Samuel L. Jackson and Charlayne Woodard had to play the deep emotion of the scene.

Celebrities are just like us: they have horrible flight experiences too! Take Alec Baldwin, who took to social media this week to ask “Why are U.S. airlines so shitty?” while on a flight from New Jersey to Vancouver, Canada. The actor, noted for his Saturday Night Live impressions and famed movies like Beetlejuice and The Hunt for Red October, felt strongly about his delayed flight, but the internet totally humbled him (as it does). 

Baldwin went on Instagram to share a photo of himself on a plane and complained in the caption that he had to sit at the gate and wait to get in the air for hours and hours. Take a look: 

For a bit of perspective, a nonstop flight from Newark to Vancouver typically takes around six hours for a plane. But according to Baldwin, he was waiting for the flight itself to take off for that time. The actor then took to social media again to post another picture with the updated wait time:

A fair point was made, but it’s actually preferable that Alec Baldwin fly with the people if you factor how flight CO2 emissions are affecting our planet. Celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Taylor Swift were seriously roasted for their reported private jet usage last year. So while it’s great to see Baldwin is doing his part, that means he gets to complain about the state of U.S. airlines these days. Here’s another comment: 

This is in reference to that time when the actor was reportedly kicked off an American Airlines flight for playing Words With Friends back in 2011, which he complained about on Twitter. Per the airline, he was “extremely rude to the crew” and used “offensive language” in response to being asked to power down his smartphone, per BBC. Baldwin kept his patience for his recent flight, but he wasn’t pleased with all the waiting around. Here’s one more internet roast from the comments:

The film recently completed shooting in Las Vegas, Majorica (Spain), and Los Angeles.

While the exact release date for Rust remains to be determined, it seems unlikely that it will be included in the 2023 new movie release schedule. Although the film’s completion is significant, it cannot overshadow the tragic circumstances surrounding its production. The loss of Helena Hutchins and the ensuing legal battles have undoubtedly tarnished the film’s reputation, casting a somber shadow over what once held great promise. Moreover, Alec Baldwin’s decision to remove his beard adds an additional layer of intrigue to an already intricate and controversial production. All the while, there's been a discussion in the entertainment industry surrounding gun safety on sets and whether real weapons should be used for productions at all. Guy Ritchie, the filmmaker known for Sherlock Holmes, Snatch and Aladdin, is now speaking out against that practice and revealed that he has since banned them on his own productions.

The director spoke to Newsweek, with whom he discussed teaming up with Jake Gyllenhaal on his latest film, The Covenant. During the conversation, he went on to say that Hollywood's attitudes about the presence of real guns on sets has changed following the fatal Rust-related incident. While discussing his decision to move away from the use of real firearms on his own productions, he explained how this practice went over during production on his military drama:

It was in October 2021 that Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot on the set of Rust when the prop gun was discharged by Alec Baldwin. Said weapon was not supposed to contain a live round and was expected to be loaded with blanks as is routine on movie sets. Baldwin would later speak out and has since maintained that he did not pull the trigger. Though the charges against him have since been dropped, Baldwin has still not been relieved of “criminal culpability,” and charges could be filed down the road. 

Guy Ritchie isn't the only filmmaker that has ended the use of guns on sets. Dwayne Johnson’s production company Seven Bucks also pledged to stop utilizing real arsenal. In addition, George Clooney spoke out about his own experience with gun safety on sets and how accidents with real consequences can occur when measures aren’t being taken seriously.

The Wrath of Man helmer's pledge to ban firearms on his sets is particularly notable, as he's known for crafting highly stylized action sequences that often rely on the use of heavy weaponry. The Covenant is no exception, as it follows a local interpreter navigating active battle during the war in Afghanistan. The Airsoft guns used in the film, however, are seemingly indistinguishable from real firearms and arguably look just as realistic as those in his previous films. We'll see if his decision helps to light a spark of change within the industry.

More than a year after the fatal shooting, filming for Rust resumed forward on the same day that Baldwin was cleared of the charges. One day after filming started again, it was announced by Deadline that the 30 Rock star landed his next film, Mike Hatton’s directorial debut Hollywood Heist. This comedy crime movie will have a star-studded cast featuring Nick Cannon, Mickey Rourke, Tara Reid, and more alongside Baldwin. 

Hollywood Heist will have these three leading men playing fictionalized versions of themselves. Cannon will be playing a Hollywood agent hoping to woo an actor, played by Baldwin, by telling his story of the trouble he's tried to fix after his latest production’s budget has been stolen by a thief. Filming wrapped up last week in Las Vegas as well as Majorica, Spain with principal photography being finished in Los Angeles. With fictionalized-version-of-actor movies like Being John Malkovich and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent being huge hits, I have a hunch Hollywood Heist will get the same treatment.

This wouldn’t be the first film role that Alec Baldwin has signed onto since the Rust shooting tragedy. Baldwin returned to acting for two Christmas-themed projects along with his brother, William, with Billie’s Magic World and Kid Santa where the 30 Rock actor will be playing Kris Kringle himself both filmed in Italy. It’s clear that the Beetlejuice actor is continuing on his family-friendly film path as he had a voiceover role in 2021’s Boss Baby sequel The Boss Baby: Back in Business as well as a voice role in Arctic Dogs the year before. 

The charges against Alec Baldwin may be dropped, but he might not yet be out of the woods. The official statement from the special prosecutor said that charges have only been dropped in order to organize further investigations into the matter. It was also stated that Baldwin was not discharged of “criminal culpability and charges may be refiled.” So, this investigation is not over as more goes into what happened on that unfortunate day.

However, word’s now come in that the criminal charges against Baldwin are being dropped.

This update comes to us from Deadline, which reports that special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis are expected to file paperwork that will dismiss the charges against the 30 Rock alum “without prejudice.” The prosecutors are set to continue their investigation into the tragic incident that unfolded at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, so there is the possibility that the case could be resumed at some point. It was also mentioned that the charges leveled against Hannah Gutierrez-Reed are not being dropped, this, as the publication  put it, “keeping the probe open and retaining subpoena power for prosecutors going forward.”

This development comes roughly a month after Alec Baldwin clapped back at “the government” in a filing that took issue with the prosecuting team’s handling of the Rust case. The actor has repeatedly said that he did not pull the trigger of the gun that hit Halyna Hutchins, and both he and Gutierrez-Reed pled not guilty when they were charged with involuntary manslaughter. There was also a period where Baldwin could have faced an extra five years in prison due to a “firearm enhancement” charge, but said charge was later dropped by the prosecutors to avoid “litigious distractions.”

The timing of Baldwin’s charges being dropped is also interesting because Rust is resuming production, albeit now in Montana. However, Deadline’s sources say that his is “purely coincidence.” Furthermore, even with the charges Hannah Gutierrez-Reed being retained, it’s now looking unlikely that the “mini-trial” mentioned earlier will begin as scheduled in early May since the prosecutors are pursuing new leads and evidence in their investigation. It’s also important to mention that last October, Hutchins’ family settled its wrongful death suit against Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions LLC, with that deal including her husband being made an executive producer on the movie and a documentary being made about the late cinematographer.

As for Rust itself, the movie follows Baldwin’s Harland Rust, an outlaw in 1880s Kansas who has to come out of hiding to save his 13-year-old grandson from being hanged for an accidental murder, resulting in the two of them going on the run and being chased by both law enforcement and a bounty hunter. Baldwin’s castmates include Travis Fimmel, Brady Noon, Frances Fisher, Jensen Ackles and Devon Werkheiser. It’s unclear when Rust will be released, but while we wait for that news and other updates about the production, see what’s slated for this year by looking through the 2023 movie release schedule.

Well, there you have it. It seems like Alec Baldwin's legal team is taking aim at the prosecuting team behind his manslaughter case. Specifically, they're citing statements made about the case, which Baldwin seems to think infringed in his right to a fair trial.

The documents acquired by Deadline cite specific incidents where those associated with the prosecution has made in the media about Alec Baldwin and the ongoing manslaughter case. This includes special prosecutor Andrea Reeb, who has since been removed form the case. The documents directly reference a quote reportedly given by the government after Baldwin's team filed a disqualification notice. The quote said the actor's team could:

Alec Baldwin's lawyers are using this as a possible indication that the New Mexico legal system isn't treating the 30 Rock actor fairly regarding the Rust manslaughter charges. What's more, they're claiming that making this statement at all was in direct conflict with the New Mexico Rules of Professional Conduct. We'll just have to wait and see how successful this legal strategy ultimately is.

Actor/producer Alec Baldwin, who was holding the gun that went off and shot Hutchins has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for the incident. But his case may have just received a boost as the special prosecutor in the case has stepped down. 

Andrea Reeb had been named special prosecutor in the case against Baldwin. His legal team had objected to her appointment, claiming that as a State Legislator in New Mexico, the state constitution did not allow her to also be a special prosecutor. The court had not yet made a ruling on that argument, however, in a statement to TMZ Reeb said that she wanted to ensure justice was done here by making sure attention was on the case at hand, and not on her.

While the involuntary manslaughter charge is certainly a cloud hanging over Baldwin as he attempts to complete work on Rust, the movie where the accident initially happened, this is the second piece of good news for his legal team in recent days. Last month a special “firearm enhancement” that would have increased the sentence for Baldwin significantly in the case of a guilty verdict, was thrown out by the court.

Both Baldwin and Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed have been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Halyna Hutchins. Gutierrez-Reed is accused of having not properly inspected the weapon, allowing live rounds onto the movie set. Baldwin is accused of not following proper safety procedures in his handling of said weapon.

According to reports, Baldwin was holding the gun, which he was told was safe to handle, when the weapon discharged. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and director Joel Souza were both injured, but Hutchins died. Baldwin has continued to insist that he never actually fired the gun in question. However, several other crew members of Rust have sued the production, and Baldwin specifically as a producer, claiming otherwise.

With Reeb having stepped down First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies will have a decision to make, either moving forward with the case herself or appointing another special prosecutor. Either way, the case against Baldwin will almost certainly be slowed down as the D.A. makes the decision of how best to move forward and the new prosecutor gets up to speed.

With the celebrity of the defendant at play and the high-profile nature of the incident, there will be a lot of eyes on this case when the trial starts. However, without a prosecutor in place, it’s unclear when that will happen, and quite a lot could happen in the interim.

Baby showers are usually not the sexiest parties that you will attend. Yes, it sounds a little wild, and based on the photos it was just as crazy as you might expect the phrase “strip club baby shower” to be. Everybody in attendance looks to be having a pretty good time, that includes the mother of the mother-to-be, actress Kim Basinger, who is in a couple of the pictures with her daughter. There's even one picture of mother and daughter where the mother-to-be has her underwear stuffed with dollar bills. So yeah, this was not your normal baby shower. It’s unclear what Alec Baldwin, who has previously objected to pictures his daughter posts, thinks of all this. 

Perhaps unsurprisingly, a lot of the comments on Ireland’s Instagram are not appreciating the fun time that everybody had. They think all of this was in very bad taste and inappropriate. Some seem to feel that a strip club baby shower is evidence of the fall of civilization, which seems to be giving Ireland Baldwin a lot of credit. But not everybody is like that. A few people think this party looks like fun and really that’s what matters.

While it’s called a baby shower, the party is really for a bunch of adults, so if they want to celebrate at a strip club, why the heck not? Everybody looks like they had a great time, and it appears to have certainly been memorable. And whenever this kid actually visits a strip club for the first time a couple of decades from now, mom can laugh about “baby’s first strip club.” 

Although the upcoming movie Rust is gearing up to resume filming this spring, the legal fallout over the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in October 2021 is far from over. Alec Baldwin, who was holding the prop gun that discharged the live round that fatally struck Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, as has armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. Following Baldwin pleading not guilty to this charge, he and the movie’s producers have been sued by three crew members over how they were impacted by the shooting.

Dolly operator Ross Adding, set costumer Doran Curtin and key grip Reese Price have alleged in their lawsuit (via Variety) that they were near Alec Baldwin, specifically inside the church building of the Bonanza Creek Ranch, when the gun was fired, and they suffered “blast injuries” from the loud sound of the shot. It’s specifically noted that Halyna Hutchins fell to the ground in front of Curtin, and Curtin subsequently “put her hands on Hutchins’ stomach” and tried to “find the source of Hutchins’ pain and figure out what was going on.” Curtin was eventually ushered out of the church, and then she “collapsed from the effects of the blast and the shock of the shooting.”

The lawsuit also claims that the Rust producers hired people who’d been hit with previous safety complaints, and that Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was hired to be the head armor on Rust despite not having much experience because the producers supposedly wanted a “quick and cheap production.” Furthermore, Alec Baldwin is accused in the lawsuit of not paying attention during the weapons training on Rust and not making sure the gun wasn’t loaded with a live round, as well as allegedly discharging said round.

Adding, Curtin and Price aren’t the first crew members who have sued Alec Baldwin following the Rust shooting. In November 2021, Serge Svetnoa, the chief of lighting, requested punitive damages in his lawsuit against Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions LLC because he said he was hit by fragments of the live round. Shortly thereafter, script supervisor Mamie Mitchell filed a lawsuit claiming that Baldwin “intentionally, without cause or excuse” cocked and fired the prop gun that killed Halyna Hutchins. Looking at the Rust production as a whole, Cherlyn Schaefer, the key medic, sued Hannah Gutierrez-Reed alongside its assistant director Dave Halls, its prop master Sarah Zachry and the production company, claiming that she suffered severe emotional distress from the incident after allegedly trying to provide medical assistance to Hutchins.

We’ll have to wait and see how this latest Rust lawsuit pans out, but as far as the involuntary manslaughter charge leveled against Alec Baldwin, the actor pleaded not guilty to it last week. Although the “firearm enhancement” charge that was leveled against him earlier this month has been dropped, if Baldwin is found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, he could face a maximum of 18 months in prison. There’s no trial date set yet, but as Rust moves production to the Yellowstone Film Ranch in Livingston, Montana, the actor must follow some restrictions, which include him not being “allowed to drink alcohol, own a gun or talk to potential witnesses besides discussing the continuation of filming Rust.”

The same can be said for his wife Hilaria Baldwin, who recently posted a throwback photo with with the caption "we are still standing."

Alec Baldwin, who was holding the prop gun that discharged the live round that fatally injured Hutchins and struck director Joel Souza in the shoulder, is still attached to lead the upcoming movie as he awaits the involuntary manslaughter case leveled against him. Word has now come in that Rust has made a big production change: shifting filming locations.

When Rust began principal photography, cameras were set up at the Bonanza Creek Ranch in Bonanza City, New Mexico. Production is expected to resume this spring, and the movie’s producers confirmed to Deadline that Rust will now film at the Yellowstone Film Ranch in Livingston, Montana. This news follows after it was announced that several of the crew members from Rust’s original start, including Joel Souza, will return to complete the movie. Souza expressed his gratitude to Yellowstone Film Ranch co-founders Richard Gray, Carter Boehm and Colin Davis for letting Rust film at that location in the following statement:

Among the new crew members who are joining Rust as it moves to Montana is Marcel the Shell with Shoes On cinematographer Bianca Cline taking over the late Halyna Hutchins’ duties and is reportedly donating her salary to charity in honor of Hutchins. The Yellowstone Film Ranch has previously housed movies like the recent Nicholas Cage-led Western The Old Way, which is also where Rust’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, first served as a production’s armorer. Like Alec Baldwin, Gutierrez-Reed has been charged with involuntary manslaughter over Hutchins’ death.

Rust was originally set to resume filming in January of this year, and it’s unclear what unfolded behind-the-scenes that resulted in this not happening. Still, now that this arrangement with the Yellowstone Film Ranch has been set up, the movie is on track to pick up where things left more than a year and a half ago. Rust will also now see Halyna Hutchins’ husband, Matthew Hutchins, acting as an executive producer. Whether Rust will be finished in time to be a 2023 new movie release or will be saved for 2024 remains to be seen.

As for Alec Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, they were both hit with an additional “firearm enhancement” charge earlier this month, which meant they potentially faced an extra five years in prison. In a twist of events, good news came to Baldwin when the involuntary manslaughter charges were downgraded after his lawyers argued that he was being incorrectly charged on a new law that was passed months after the shooting. This can mean if the SNL actor is found guilty, he could be facing a maximum of 18 months in prison. Filming will continue for Rust this spring.

This was because of an added “firearm enhancement” charge that was put into New Mexico law in 2022 (about seven months after the incident). Now, however, prosecutors have downgraded the involuntary manslaughter charges.

News of this change comes from The New York Times following arguments from Alec Baldwin's attorneys earlier this month protesting the firearm enhancement charge. While a guilty verdict with that charge would have resulted in a minimum sentencing of five years, Baldwin is still potentially facing a maximum of 18 months in prison. A statement was issued by Heather Brewer, a spokesperson for the district attorney, who said that the dropped charge was a result of prosecutors trying to avoid "litigious distractions" from the actor and his lawyers. The statement adds:

Per NYT, the firearm enhancement charge in New Mexico was changed last year to apply to cases where a firearm is "discharged" in the midst of an individual committing a noncapital felony. Prior to the law's alteration, the charge applied only to cases where a person "brandished" a firearm in such criminal cases.

Alec Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez-Reed were officially charged with Involuntary Manslaughter late last month for their roles in the incident that took place on the set of the developing film Rust in October 2021. According to reports, Gutierrez-Reed was meant to load a gun used in the movie with dummy rounds before giving the weapon to Baldwin, and the gun discharged while the actor was working on his draw in preparation for a scene. In response to the criminal charges, Baldwin has said that he was told that the weapon was "cold" – meaning safe to use – prior to the firearm discharging, and he has said that he didn't pull the trigger. He has maintained his innocence while reportedly being "prepared for all outcomes." In addition to playing a role in Rust, the actor is also credited as a producer.

It was reported last week that filmmakers are planning to resume production on Rust this spring. In addition to the criminal charges, the movie has been fined $136,793 by  the Occupational Health and Safety Bureau due to what has been described as “plain indifference” to employee safety. In addition to Alec Baldwin, the film also stars Travis Fimmel, Frances Fisher, and Jensen Ackles – who addressed the incident shortly after it happened.

Two safety officers have additionally been added to the production, along with the message that “Live ammunition is — and always was — prohibited on set.” During the incident that killed Hutchins, Baldwin thought he was handling a “cold gun,” but a live bullet struck her, leading to her death. 

An investigation regarding the death on the Rust set concluded on January 31, when it was announced that Alec Baldwin and the movie’s armorer had been charged for the incident. Additionally, as it was announced last week, Baldwin may also face an additional charge called “firearm enhancement” due to a new law being passed as a result of the incident. 

Following last month’s announcement that Baldwin was going to be charged with involuntary manslaughter, it was reported that the actor was “leaning” on his wife Hilaria and trying to focus on their kids during the difficult time. Baldwin was “distraught” by the decision, as it comes after he has been fired from multiple jobs due to the incident and was hit with multiple lawsuits due to what happened. Rust itself also faced maximum fines for the incident. 

Rust’s writer/director Joel Souza called returning to the movie “bittersweet,” whilst also sharing his commitment to completing the movie over a year after the incident. The filmmaker also stated that “every effort” on resuming the production will be “devoted” to honoring the legacy of the late cinematographer.

With news of Rust resuming production, it looks like audiences will get to see the content of the film that has so many headlines have covered over the years in the wake of Hutchins untimely death. The movie is about a young boy who goes on the run with his estranged grandfather in 1880s Kansas. In addition to the involuntary manslaughter charge against him, Alec Baldwin is now facing a “firearm enhancement” charge from New Mexico prosecutors, which carries with it a five-year penalty for “discharge of a firearm in the course of a felony,” as reported by Variety. However, the enhancement didn’t become incorporated into New Mexico law until May 2022, seven months after Halyna Hutchins was killed. As such, it’s unclear if a judge will allow this to be applied to Baldwin during the forthcoming trial.

As such, First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies and her appointed special prosecutor, Andrea Reeb, are looking into the issue. Hannah Gutierrez Reed is also facing the firearm enhancement charge, and her attorney, Jason Bowles, claims that the New Mexico D.A.’s office has “clearly charged an enhancement that is barred by the constitution and ex post facto law.” When the shooting on the Rust set occurred in late 2021, New Mexico law did allow for a three-year enhancement for “brandishing” a firearm during the course of a felony, but “brandish” was specifically defined as requiring “intent to intimidate or injure a person.”

The involuntary manslaughter charges that Alec Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez Reed are each facing carry a prison sentence of up to 18 months. As such, if both that charge and the firearm enhancement were to stick, they would be facing a maximum of up to six and a half years in prison. Baldwin and Reed are set to make their initial court appearances virtually on February 24, but Baldwin’s attorneys have already filed a motion to disqualify Andrea Reeb, arguing that her appointment as the case’s special prosector “violates the separation of powers provision in the state constitution” since she was elected to New Mexico’s House of Representatives last November.
