Tyra Banks reportedly isn’t pleased with how she’s utilized in Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model, an in-depth documentary released by Netflix this year. It was that displeasure that apparently prompted Banks to file suit against the streamer and others for multiple alleged offenses like breach of contract and false light. Since news of the suit broke, two former contestants from the reality competition series at the center of the doc have spoken out. And the two series alums didn’t mince words when sharing their takes.

Per reports, one of Banks’ key issues with the doc is that the “three-and-a-half-hour” interview she participated in for the show is only cut down to “16 minutes” across the three episodes. With that, Banks argues that the final edit of the doc misrepresents her, and her legal team also asserts that much of “accountability Ms. Banks took” for claims leveled at her by other series veterans was cut out. In addition to false light and breach of contract, Banks is also suing for alleged defamation by implication and false light.

Adrianne Curry, who won the first cycle of ANTM back in 2003, caught wind of the lawsuit and took to Instagram to issue a response. The media personality posted a video and, via her caption, she mused that “Tyra doesn't like being ‘edited’," before quipping, “Welcome to the party, pal,” (a nod to one of Bruce Willis’ famous lines from Die Hard). In the clip itself, Curry – who’s been on the receiving end of backlash herself in recent years – dropped a blunt response to Banks’ apparent disdain for the docuseries edit:

The other former contestant to speak out on the lawsuit was Angelea Preston, who competed and won Season 17 of America’s Next Top Model before her title was removed due to her having formerly worked as an escort. While speaking with EW, Preston opined that if Banks’ claims about the documentary creating a “false narrative” around her are correct, then it’s “karma” for her work on ANTM. Many who’ve competed on the show have long made claims about situational manipulation and selective editing having been implemented. Preston also shared a direct message for Banks that mirrored Curry’s take:

Preston, who tried to sue Banks for $3 million in 2014 over her disqualification, further alleged that she and others were subject to unfavorable edits during their time on ANTM. During her interview with EW, Preston addressed Banks again by asking her a series of hypothetical questions:

When it comes to Banks’ suit, Netflix isn’t the only defendant named, as the docuseries’ co-directors, Daniel Sivan and Mor Loushy, are as well alongside Netflix Music, EverWonder Studio and 89 Blocks Holdings. Banks argues that Loushy and Sivan are withholding footage from her interview for the doc. Per her suit, Banks wants a jury trial and is seeking unspecified punitive damages. As of this writing, neither Netflix nor EverWonder have released statements.

Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model proved not to be a fluff piece on the eponymous series but more of an examination of show participants’ experiences, both positive and negative. The show proved to be a hit with Netflix subscription holders upon its release this past February, and it has received strong reviews from critics. As Tyra Banks proceeds with her lawsuit aimed at the production, time will tell if more series vets choose to share their reactions as Angelea Preston and Adrianne Curry have.

Earlier this year, Netflix’s 2026 release schedule ushered in the premiere of Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model, a three-part documentary series on the eponymous reality competition series. The show features various interviews with the long-running show’s former contestants and hosts, including series creator Tyra Banks. Now, it seems Banks has taken issue with the streamer, as she’s formally suing the company in connection to her involvement in the doc. And Banks’ lawsuit lays out her rationale for taking legal action.

Banks is specifically filing suit over alleged defamation by implication, breach of contract, false endorsement and false light. Aside from Netflix, other defendants named in the lawsuit include against Netflix as well as 89 Blocks Holdings, EverWonder Studio, Netflix Music and documentary co-directors Daniel Sivan and Mor Loushy, per Variety. 52-year-old Banks reportedly takes issue with the “three-and-a-half-hour” interview she did being cut down to only “16 minutes.”

Upon the doc’s release, a lot was said about Banks’ segments as well as claims made against her from others who were involved with the show during the early aughts. Per the lawsuit, Banks believes her interview was “reassembled to support a false and defamatory narrative unrelated to what she actually expressed.” The media personality’s lawyers also allege that the “accountability Ms. Banks took” for certain situations was left out of the final edit. Additionally, the suit reads:

Ahead of Reality Check’s release, some viewers were seemingly of the impression that it would be a fluffy piece on the inner workings of the UPN/CW/VH1 show that ran for 24 seasons. Sivan and Loushy’s doc actually features intimate stories, with various series alums sharing their specific experiences. More than a few accusations were leveled against Banks, who was accused of not taking accountability for some of the over-the-top situations that occurred on the show. Another notable topic was Banks’ handling of a contestant, Shandi Sullivan, having sex while being blackout drunk amid production.

Banks, who’s received backlash over the years for varying aspects of the series, also made headlines due to comments made by former friend and fellow judge Miss J Alexander, who claimed Banks “reached out” but didn’t visit him after he suffered a stroke that left him unable to walk or talk. (Alexander has since relearned how to speak.) Via her lawsuit, Banks responded to some of the claims leveled against her, and her lawyers also laid out her response to the Sullivan matter:

Tyra Banks is currently seeking an “appropriate” amount of punitive damages as part of this case and wants a jury trial. All the while, Reality Check: Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model has received critical acclaim, and it trended high amongst titles available to Netflix subscription holders. As of this writing, neither Netflix nor any of the other parties named in the case have formally responded to Banks’ lawsuit.

I regret to say that I watched many early 2000s reality TV shows. Looking back, despite some iconic moments, some were very problematic. It’s fascinating to see what was not only allowed but encouraged in that decade. There were some great shows, but some extremely harmful ones, including America’s Next Top Model.

I loved the series growing up. Though fashion has never been one of my main passions, it has always been one that I find fascinating. Therefore, America’s Next Top Model automatically piqued my interest, then sold me on the concept.

Watching Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model made me see some of the extreme issues with the show that I was too young to recognize at the time.

I Always Enjoyed America's Next Top Model Because It Felt Body Positive. Now I See It Was Just As Judgmental As The Fashion Industry Itself

I grew up as a plus-size teen. Therefore, just by existing, I had been told by the fashion industry that my body type would never be welcomed in that world. I could enjoy seeing high fashion, but know it was never going to become part of my reality. Then, America’s Next Top Model gave young curvy women and men some hope. Curvy women could also have modeling careers.

America’s Next Top Model sold this dream with winners such as Whitney Thompson. I remember seeing her take the crown and being so excited, and following her career for a bit after the show. I loved when I saw her in campaigns. It truly seemed like the show was making the world more open to the idea of plus-size models.

I still think shows like America’s Next Top Model helped open the doors for the industry to become more plus-size friendly, but I don’t think it was as open to the idea of bigger women as models as the show portrayed.

Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model shows how Tyra and crew body-shamed. The producers and editors made segments on models eating too much or not fitting into certain clothes. The judges called people fat.

The show doesn't portray any of these things as bad, but just part of the struggle of the modeling industry. I remember when Tyra was body shamed in gossip magazines. I cheered when she talked about embracing her body. Yet, here she was at the center of a show that was adding to self-esteem issues and encouraging people to strive for thinness.

The body positivity movement was taking leaps forward with celebrities embracing their bodies at all sizes, but I have seen a major fall backwards in recent years. I just hope reality TV shows won’t repeat America’s Next Top Model’s mistakes and promote body positivity while shaming people for their size and eating habits.

I Loved The Quirky Judges, But Now I See How Certain Ones Were Just Mean

I think the early 2000s reality TV shows normalized the mean judge. Instead of loathing them for their cruelty, we cheered for their honesty. Though this may have seemed harmless and fun for viewers, it must have been soul-crushing for the contestants.

Janice Dickinson was always a cruel judge, but it felt more like she was the comedic relief. She would say something outrageous, and it would be mean but funny. It was probably due to the editing, because we never really saw her hurt people’s feelings to the point of devastation. I am sure this happened, but America’s Next Top Model rarely focused on that side of Dickinson’s judgment.

She was the judge you wanted to impress. The models knew they killed a photoshoot when she praised them. Seeing a series of clips from Dickinson on Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model reminded me of the extent of some of her cruel comments.

I don’t watch many reality TV shows that feature judges, but I think that it is for the better that most of them aren’t cruel. They may lack some constructive criticism, however, I appreciate that the era of the mean judge ended. Reality TV shows can already be a traumatic experience. Contestants don’t need to be told they're ugly by a judge.

I Used To Love How Creative The America's Next Top Model Photoshoots Were, But With Context Now Some Seem Problematic

America’s Next Top Model had some iconic photoshoots. For me, much of the appeal of the series was seeing the photoshoots and how they turned out. Photography is also a minor passion of mine. Therefore, I used to excitedly wait for the end of the episodes to see them.

Even at the time, I knew the changing race photoshoot was a huge mistake. However, I wasn’t so savvy when it came to other photoshoots. Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model highlights how problematic and questionable some of the others were as well.

The fact that Tyra made a contestant relive a traumatic moment for a photoshoot is well remembered, but it doesn’t minimize the horror of that decision and act. It’s why some find Tyra’s behavior and response in the docuseries chilling.

It shows how sometimes the lines of reality TV become so blurry that the people involved occasionally fail to see the heinous nature of their behavior.

I Never Thought About The Long Term Damage Of The Show, Now I Can't Stop Thinking About It

Now, I am much more conscious and aware of how much damage reality TV shows can do to people. We now hear so many horror stories about the short and long-term effects of being on reality TV.

There is so much psychological and emotional damage that can happen because of them. Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model also highlights how reality TV can hurt career prospects. It now makes sense why so many of these models never became huge names in the industry.

They were immediately judged and labeled due to their history on reality TV shows. Reality TV has opened the door for many, but I am sure it’s also made certain careers outside the reality TV space harder, including other entertainment careers. Unfortunately, some of these women (and some men) saw the show as a way to open the door to a modeling career. Then it brought pain and damage to their lives.

I Think Tyra Bank's Intentions Were Pure At First But Now It's Making Me Revisit The Production Of Other Reality TV Shows

I wasn’t completely surprised that Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model was a docuseries exploring the negative sides of the show. I was, however, a little shocked by how it made me reevaluate the series completely. I don’t think I could ever watch the show again without thinking about all the damage it caused to the contestants.

I am sure there are many reality TV shows that ended in the early 2000s that have a similar problematic past. There are probably more that are still airing today that have some skeletons. I now want to see this investigation-type docuseries for other shows. Let the contestants finally have a voice.

At one point in time America's Next Top Model was considered one of the best reality shows in the world. It was wildly popular during its heyday, and those with a Netflix subscription were recently treated to a three-part documentary about the darker side of the competition series. Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model is one of the best Netflix shows to binge watch, and after tearing through all three episodes I was left truly shocked by Tyra Banks.

While some folks thought the Top Model documentary would be a fluff piece, that wasn't the case. Instead contestants shared harrowing stories about the way they were treated during filming. While former judges like Jay Manuel and Nigel Barker expressed remorse, Tyra's responses to her contestants' accounts was chilling.

Tyra Banks' Lack Of Accountability Or Contrition Was Wild.

It was somewhat shocking when it was revealed that Tyra Banks would be interviewed for Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model, since she was the face and mind behind the controversial series. The iconic model and TV personality recently turned 50, and showed up to talk about Top Model in a trench coat. I was hoping to see her look inward at some of the missteps of the series, but that didn't really happen.

Even as the documentary focused on horrifying stories like Shandi Sullivan's blackout in Milan, Banks didn't seem too remorseful. She made various excuses for the show's inappropriate moments, and even her on-camera "apologies" didn't feel genuine. After all, she didn't actually make them to the contestants themselves.

Then there's the interpersonal drama between the judges. While Tyra claimed that she wasn't responsible for the firing of Jay Manuel, J. Alexander, and Nigel Barker, that doesn't seem to be what they think. The fact that Miss Jay is still waiting for Banks to visit him post-stroke also didn't paint a pretty picture of the former Dancing with the Stars host.

Given what we've learned in the years since Top Model was originally airing, it seems like it Tyra could have easily admitted some fault and been contrite about the things she put the contestants through. That includes inappropriate challenges, the makeovers, and even dental surgery that she put some of them through. But, she didn't seem to have any genuine regrets, or take responsibility in a real way. And, the way she methodically answered the questions was downright chilling at times.

I have to wonder if the documentary will negatively impact whether or not America's Next Top Model ends up actually returning for a 25th cycle. Banks used the doc to hype up a new season, but it hasn't officially been ordered yet.

Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model is streaming now on Netflix as part of the 2026 TV schedule. Now I'm curious to see if more reality shows get their own documentaries.

When I first heard about Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, I thought the new Netflix original series was going to be somewhat of a fluff piece highlighting the long-running reality show’s impact on pop culture. Though I suspected the three-parter would touch on some of the more infamous moments from model-turned-Hollywood-star Tyra Banks’ uber-popular show about models looking for a big break, I didn’t think it’d go as far as it did.

Don’t get me wrong, the 2026 TV show does champion various people (both contestants and judges) involved with ANTM, but it’s far more biting than I had imagined before watching it with my Netflix subscription. While I do have some problems with Reality Check, there’s something about it that makes it much more than a lighthearted exploration of a pop culture phenomenon.

Though The Buck Got Pushed Around, Reality Check Held People Accountable

Like any documentary or docuseries about a massive culture event like America’s Next Top Model, I had a feeling that if Reality Check touched on some trickier topics and incidents, the buck would be passed around. That does end up being true to a degree, as the reality show’s producers often say things to the effect of “it was a different time,” or “that was the production side, and I had no part in it directly.” However, this doesn’t mean people aren’t held accountable.

One of the most damning segments is the one detailing Shandi Sullivan cheating on her longtime boyfriend following a party in Italy, and the production team’s unwillingness to stop the incident from happening. This harrowing chapter becomes a major part of the docuseries, and the powers that be, like Tyra Banks and Ken Mok, are pressed on the issue multiple times. Does it make up for one woman’s life being upturned for TV drama? No, but it’s a start.

The Series Also Did A Great Job Of Highlighting The Issues With Reality TV In The Early 2000s

The phrase “hindsight is 20/20” comes up in Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model more times than I can count. While a cliche at this point, especially when looking at something from 20 years ago through a modern lens, this argument isn’t without merit in the docuseries. Though I personally think the producers let the show’s major players get away with a little too much at times, the series does do a remarkable, albeit painful, job of highlighting just how rotten reality TV was in the early 2000s.

Shows like ANTM were marketed as reality TV, but there was very little that was real about them (aside from some real drama with real consequences). I’m not saying modern shows are any better, but this competition series came out when the format was still in its infancy and those making the shows didn’t fully understand the ramifications of their actions. I’m not defending some of the shadier and morally bankrupt actions of the show’s producers, but this was a different time.

All of this is to say that Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model was a somewhat shocking deep-dive into one of the biggest TV shows of the 21st century. Could it have gone further? Yes, but this one leaves you with a lot to think about.

That includes TV mistakes, whether they be poor writing or a flub that's noticed by the public. And there are 32 TV mistakes off the top of my head that stand out, spanning scripted, reality, and live television. Let's break it all down.

To be clear, this isn't a list of solely continuity errors or viral newscaster flubs. Instead, it's combining both of these categories, as well as narrative issues that have continued to plague the reputation of popular TV shows. And some of them just happen to be the most memorable TV moment from that particular show. In no specific order here is the list. Although a spoiler alert is in play for the scripted shows.

Warren Beatty And Faye Dunaway's Oscars Flub

The biggest story to come out of the 2017 Academy Awards ceremony was that presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Betty accidentally named La La Land the Best Picture winner when it was actually Barry Jenkins' Moonlight. It was a truly wild to end the night and was one of the most memorable moments to come out of the star-studded event in modern memory. That is, until the infamous Will Smith slap incident.

Jeff Varner Outs Zeke, Survivor 

Survivor is one of the best reality shows of all time and has remained wildly popular in the decades since it first premiered. The show is endlessly captivating because every season is different, and is influenced by the unique cast of characters. Unfortunately, the social experiment got ugly in Season 34, when Jeff Varner outed Zeke Smith as transgender in an attempt to prove that he was untrustworthy. 

Kathie Lee Forgets Martin Short's Wife Had Died

Kathie Lee Gifford has a long career on TV, and had her own hour of The Today Show for years on NBC. While she and Hota Kotb had plenty of fans, there were some noticeable missteps along the way. Chief among them was an interview with Martin Short, where Kathie Lee referred to his late wife and seemingly forgot she had actually passed away two years earlier. It's wildly awkward, although the Only Murders in the Building star handled it with grace.

Dany Burns King's Landing, Game Of Thrones

Throughout Game of Thrones' run on TV, Emilia Clarke's Daenerys Targaryen was one of the show's primary heroes. Fans were thrilled when she finally appeared in Westeros to take the Iron Throne, and were shocked and disappointed when she suddenly decided to burn King's Landing down, killing thousands of innocent people. And fans have been complaining about this plot choice, and how quickly she went mad, for years. 

Asking the Models To Change Races, America's Next Top Model

America's Next Top Model ran for many years, and had a number of controversial challenges that haven't aged very well. Chief among them was back in Cycle 4, where models were asked to portray another race for a photo shoot. Before the term "cultural appropriation" was known, this was a wild challenge that seriously gives the ick... and happens to be one of the most iconic reality TV moments. 

The Faithful Trusting Cirie, The Traitors

The first season of The Traitors US was a big experiment, with the show's second season helping to make it a wildly successful Emmy-winning hit. Season 1 featured a mix of celebrities and normal folks, including Survivor legend Cirie Fields. Unfortunately, her allies seemingly didn't know her reputation, and completely trusted her and allowed her to easily win and take the money in the end. And the reunion was super awkward. 

Miss Teen South Carolina's Map Question

Every so often a beauty pageant will go viral, usually for all the wrong reasons. There are few as iconic as Miss Teen South Carolina Caitlin Upton's interview answer from back in 2007. She's asked why young Americans can't locate the country on a map, and has a stream-of-consciousness answer that's iconic in its word salad-ness. 

Netflix Canceling Mindhunter

After the streaming wars began, it became clear that services were producing way too much original content. Netflix has canceled a number of beloved shows, but few have caused as much of a stir as Mindhunter. David Fincher's drama was a gripping story, but Netflix won't let Fincher continue with Season 3. 

Anne Hathway And James Franco Hosting The Oscars

Finding the right host for ceremonies like the Academy Awards is easier said than done, and there have been some stinkers over the years. Back in 2011 James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosted together, and it was an extremely awkward viewing experience. Unfortunately, the 2007–08 Writers Guild of America strike happened during Season 2, resulting in a disappointing and shorter installment. While the show would continue it never reached its former glory, and many characters and plot lines from Season 2 were abandoned altogether.

Grey's Anatomy is one of the longest-running shows of all time and many of the OG fans (as well as the original cast) have dropped off as a result. While it was tough to continue the show without Sandra Oh's Cristina Yang, eventually the show had to write off Patrick Dempsey's Derek Shepherd... by tragically killing him. And for many the show hasn't been the same since. 

The Grape Stomping Lady

Journalist Melissa Sander became instantly recognizable thanks to a news blunder she was involved in which became one of YouTube's earliest viral videos. In it, she's stomping on grapes, and suddenly falls and gets the wind knocked out of her. The noises she makes and the instant karma of the video have helped it remain iconic through the years. 

Ralph Bohner, WandaVision

WandaVision was wildly popular upon its release on Disney+, especially as we were in the midst of isolating due to the pandemic. Fans were shocked when X-Men star Evan Peters showed up as "Pietro", since Quicksilver was played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the MCU. In the end, this was all a gag, with his character Ralph Bohner being perhaps the show's only misstep.

Throughout the many years of The Real Housewives franchise, there have been a few notable hot mic moments. But the most iconic came from RHOSLC's Lisa Barlow, where she went off on a wild rant about Meredith Marks behind closed doors. Unfortunately, her mic was very much still on.

Ashlee Simpson's Performance, SNL

HBO's Game of Thrones was a sensation when it was on the air, even if the final season left something to be desired. But it also went viral for unique reasons, such as the GOT error where a Starbucks cup was visible in Westeros. Oops.

Stranger Things is arguably the most popular original show to come out of Netflix since its inception. But that doesn't mean it's perfect, especially related to the use of Dungeons & Dragons lore. Because in Season 1 while the cast references the Demogorgon and even has a figure for the creature, it actually wouldn't be available in the year 1983. Given how passionate D&D fans are, the folks at Netflix probably should have seen this coming.

The Hills’ Final Shot 

There were a lot of questions about how "real" The Hills actually was, and the series finale provided an answer in epic fashion. After a tearful goodbye between Brody Jenner and Kristin Cavallari in the final scene, he appears to be standing in front of the Hollywood sign as he watches her limo drive away. The camera then pans out to reveal they're in a studio backlot, and the Hollywood sign backdrop is wheeled away as Cavallari — whose limo never actually went anywhere — exits the vehicle and hugs Jenner.

Survivor’s Rat And Snake Speech 

Dozens of seasons into Survivor, perhaps the most infamous scene hails from the very first finale when Sue Hawk made TV history with a speech comparing Richard Hatch to a snake and his fellow finalist Kelly Wiglesworth to a rat. She appealed to the jury to let it end the way Mother Nature intended: “For the snake to eat the rat.” 

RHOA’s NeNe Leakes Says, ‘Close Your Legs To Married Men’ 

Kim Zolciak and NeNe Leakes had some wild moments on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, but one of the sickest burns was served up during the Season 1 reunion after Zolciak clarified her situation with “Big Poppa.” She told Andy Cohen that her on-off man was going through a divorce but was still legally married, ultimately prompting Leakes’ infamous line: “Close your legs to married men.”

As long as there's reality TV, there will continue to be iconic moments like these, and I for one can't wait.

Dancing with the Stars has been going through a lot of changes lately, between its move to Disney+ for Season 31, and having some pros and a judge exit the show. While we don’t know when a new season of the dancing competition will hit the 2023 TV schedule, what we do know is more change is on the way as Tyra Banks has confirmed she’s leaving the ballroom after three seasons of hosting and a lot of online trolling. 

There had been rumors that Banks might be leaving Dancing with the Stars. Reportedly the competition’s executive producers were looking to change the show in a big way by hiring new hosts, and bringing in different contestants. While we don't know if this has anything to do with Banks' decision to leave, the former America’s Next Top Model host did confirm that she's leaving to pursue her goals in business. She told TMZ:

She noted that she thinks it’s simply time to go, and said that she is “crazy, crazy, crazy focused” on her business SMiZE & Dream, an ice cream brand that’s in the process of going global. After showing the reporter her Whole Foods cart, and explaining she was doing some research and development for new ice cream flavors, she said:

She left TMZ saying she is going from the “ballroom to the boardroom.” Banks also explained that her plan is to focus on her business, and still create television, however, she’ll likely be behind the camera rather than in front of it. 

While Banks spoke about her business goals being her reason for leaving Dancing with the Stars, she faced a large amount of online trolling during her time as host, which I’d assume was not easy to deal with. She’s been the subject of humorous posts on Twitter, as viewers did not hold back their thoughts about Banks’ “bowtie pasta” dress. However, she’s also been at the center of trolling after saying the wrong couple’s names during an elimination, which was compared to Steve Harvey’s infamous Miss. Universe moment by a star of the show. The situation became such a big deal she ended up addressing the “craziness” again explaining everything that went down behind the scenes. I'd imagine that all of that has to take its toll, plus working on live television is already difficult enough without people online talking about you.

Live TV can’t be easy to do, even when you’re an experienced host like Banks is. Hosts and judges of TV shows like Dancing with the Stars come and go – I mean just looks at the ever-changing roster of coaches on The Voice. And while it's a bit shocking the host is leaving after three years, it makes sense that she wants to move on to other projects that she's more passionate about, taking her work from the "ballroom to the boardroom." 

There has been high praise for Melanie Lynskey’s role in The Last of Us as Kathleen, the leader of a group of revolutionaries who overthrew a QZ. However, some have criticized her look on the show, like America’s Next Top Model winner Adrianne Curry. So, when the model criticized the Yellowjackets star’s body, Lynskey fired back. 

While Curry’s tweet criticizing Lynskey’s body is now deleted, The Last of Us actress posted a screenshot the ANTM winner's comment, which read:

Curry called out Lynskey’s look, noting she doesn’t think the actress would be able to overthrow a QZ on The Last of Us. She also said they'd need The Terminator’s Linda Hamilton instead. The Yellowjackets star then responded to the America’s Next Top Model alum, by firing back: 

Talk about a clap back. Lynskey was quick to point out that Curry didn’t have her facts straight. The photo in question was from an InStyle profile published last August, not the show. She’s rocking a Valentino cape and Christian Siriano dress in the profile, an outfit her character on the 2023 TV schedule stand-out series 100% was not seen wearing in the latest installment. So I’m not quite sure Curry watched the episode. 

Also, Curry’s tweet and Lynskey’s response point out her body and how she’s built. The actress noted that her character is not the one doing the physical heavy lifting, she's the mastermind behind the plan. She doesn't need to be “muscly.” 

The Heavenly Creatures star has responded to body shaming before, and she dismantled the logic of hurtful posts. When the first season of Yellowjackets dropped, the actress was body shamed, and she responded by explaining: “skinny does not always equal healthy.” And in the case of The Last of Us, she made it clear it’s her intelligence that matters. She does not need to be ripped to lead a revolution, and if you’ve seen Episode 4, you know she led one very effectively.  

Overall, Lynskey and The Last of Us has been loved by millions and millions of viewers, Linda Ronstadt’s tune “Long Long Time” got a massive boost on Spotify after the beloved Episode 3 with the same name aired, and because of all the love and popularity, the series was quickly picked up for a second season. So while there are overly critical people on the internet, it seems like the vast majority of viewers love the Last of Us.

It’s been four years since America’s Next Top Model came back from the dead briefly after the show reached its 22-season run. Without any more cycles left to see, this is the time for former fans to reflect on scandalous moments that occurred on the show that wouldn’t be allowed today. A trending piece of controversy that’s been circulating is a TikTok compilation video of how former host Tyra Banks and the rest of the judges on America’s Next Top Model handled a contestant who was considered “plus-sized” on the show.

There's a compilation TikTok video making the rounds tagged #tyrabanks that starts with the caption “Most appalling behavior on ANTM…the mistreatment of the first 'plus-sized' model." In Season 1, the then-26-year-old Robin was considered a “plus-sized” model in the eyes of Tyra Banks. Banks said that the problem she had with Robin was that she was not “plus-sized on top, and on the bottom, she is.” Judge and ex-model Janice Dickerson said Robin was “out in terms of being a supermodel” and that the next top model will not be plus-sized. Instead of the Life Size actress slamming back at Dickerson and the other judges for their offensive comments, she said she wished Robin's upper and lower body matched “better” in size. 

The video later showed Banks criticizing Robin’s wardrobe choice for a photo shoot as she wore a sarong over her bottom bikini. Banks asked Robin if she was covering herself all the time so no one would stare at her hips. Robin walked away in tears, and the former America’s Got Talent host continued to ask her if she was crying. Other judges said Robin was “too old” to start modeling and that there’s no market for plus-sizes in France. Despite the judges acting turned off by Robin’s body shape, they were not happy when she didn’t provide them with a nude photo despite her reasoning being she wasn’t comfortable. Ultimately, Robin was asked to leave.

A number of comments on this TikTok video expressed sympathy for Robin and a lot of hate for the former Victoria’s Secret model. Comments would say that they were shocked that the judges considered this season one contestant to be plus-sized and how they did her so dirty. Other TikTok users felt that Tyra Banks’ behavior was “unacceptable,” and that she should have defended Robin as she’s been in her shoes before during the days she started out as a model.  

A couple of years ago, Tyra Banks admitted America’s Next Top Model made mistakes, in that by making sure these girls would get work, she would tell them what they needed to change about their appearance. But now, she believes if there was anything that needed to be “fixed” with any of the girls, that feedback should have been given after that contestant won. With that in mind, maybe this television personality would have treated Robin differently if this show was done today or would have stopped those who fat-shamed any contestant.

As of now, Tyra Banks works as the new replacement host for Dancing with the Stars for Dancing with the Stars. If America’s Next Top Model were to come back for more cycles, there’s a good chance the show would be more inclusive to people of different shapes and sizes. Tyra Banks has had a tough few months in the limelight. Not everyone was happy with her first season as the host on Dancing with the Stars and then this week she was dragged online for how much models made on America’s Next Top Model during its heyday. Now, another ANTM star has defended Banks and the show, but the end result has still seen a lot of mud slung around. 

So what happened here? Essentially, this past week a former America’s Next Top Model star, Sarah Hartshorne, went viral on Twitter when bringing up what she was paid for her time on the reality show. While she noted she has talked about this on other platforms like TikTok a lot, she got a lot of info out to the fans in just a few characters with the tweet:

Her tweet wasn’t particularly filled with any vitriol or bad feelings toward her reality TV experience, but the comments on the post got pretty riled up. One other tweet that went viral basically said that this is something people should be mad at the America’s Next Top Model host for.

While some defended Tyra in the comments, the gist here is that a faction of people felt as if Tyra may have done some of the contestants dirty during their runs on the show. But is that type of criticism fair? For that, we need look no further than a second ANTM contestant's comments.

Another Former America’s Next Top Model Contestant Explains How The $40 Worked

After Sarah Hartshorne’s comments made the rounds, another former Top Model star ultimately decided it was time to weigh in on those comments and what really happened during her time on the show. She explained that the models were not “paid” $40 per day as a payday, noting the money was meant as a per diem to cover expenses. Toccara Jones, who appeared on the third cycle of the show, told TMZ: 

Obviously, the contestants who appear on America's Next Top Model sign contracts and are walked through what signing on means before they say yes. And while it might not seem fair from those online who are looking in from the outside, it's not really that dissimilar from what other contestants on reality shows get paid. 

Most shows of this ilk, including the likes of Survivor or even Top Chef receive a small amount for appearing on the show (and can earn more the longer they are on, in the case of Survivor.) The end goal, though, is to win the show and take home the big prize. Toccara Jones personally feels that this is what everyone who signs on for the show should know and that fans shouldn't be giving Tyra Banks flack for it. She also said: 

In the past, Tyra Banks has spoken out about some regrets she has about how the show was run, but pay didn't come up. She is still synonymous with the show, which did launch the careers of some models who still have roles in the industry, including Toccara Jones.  In this case, the stepping stone course seems as if it may have worked out more for some contestants than others, and that's probably always going to be the case. 

It has been 17 years since America’s Next Top Model debuted back in 2003. Tyra Banks created the show and acted as the host and head judge for 23 of its 24 and counting seasons. After taking a break from hosting the show, she returned for Season 24. While the competition series has amassed a legacy, Banks has revealed the mistakes she believes America’s Next Top Model made.

America’s Next Top Model gave young women the chance to become a supermodel. Banks was a guest on former Today host Tamron Hall’s new talk show. The new Dancing with the Stars host explained that the modeling world 20 years ago lacked diversity and inclusion, and the show helped make many inroads. At the same, Tyra Banks was still an active supermodel with everything that went with it, including many rules. Banks continued, telling The Tamron Hall Show:

Tyra Banks acknowledges there were a lot of missteps during the early days of America’s Next Top Model. However, she intended to make sure that the young women featured on the show would have careers afterward in the industry. One thing that Banks did not mention regretting is the infamous moment she shouted at contestant Tiffany Richardson.

Still, Tyra Banks is not holding back in acknowledging America’s Next Top Model’s other issues. One of those matters was how the show urged participants to alter their appearance. Banks now says that she would not have done that if she could do it all over. Sharing what she believes she should have said instead, Banks continued:

America’s Next Top Model has had multiple lives, moving from its original UPN home onto The CW during the networks’ merger. From there, the show ended after 22 seasons, only to later be revived by VH1. Season 23 and Season 24 both aired on the cabler. There were hosting changes with Rita Ora hosting it in Season 23 before Tyra Banks returned for its twenty-fourth and latest season. Banks has remained busy both on and off her signature show.

Now Tyra Banks is busy with Dancing with the Stars. If America’s Next Top Model ever returns for another cycle, Banks could continue to build in the areas she believes the show made mistakes. And for America's Next Top Model, that moment is definitely a scream filled confrontation between host/producer Tyra Banks and a contestant back in 2005's cycle four. Upon eliminating two contestants, Banks wasn't happy with how contestant Tiffany Richardson reacted to the news, and ended up screaming at the contestant, and going viral before we even knew what that word meant. And now she's recreated that iconic moment, with a twist for America's Got Talent.

Tyra Banks recently did a Facebook Live session to promote America's Got Talent and connect with her fans. When one fan asked her to recreate the iconic Tiffany shouting session, Banks obliged. But the twist was changing her own monologue to represent a situation from AGT. Check it out.

It looks like Tyra Banks understands how iconic her Top Model freakout was, and even knows what she screamed at poor Tiffany word for word. Now that is owning your brand. And while this recreation wasn't quite as powerful as the original scene, it was fun to see Banks poke fun at herself for completely losing her mind during an early episode of America's Next Top Model.

For those of you who don't remember (shame on you), Tyra Banks and the other hosts of Top Model had a hard time with Tiffany during her tenure on the show. The aspiring model had a defeatist attitude that would often hinder her performance in challenges and deliberations. When she and a fellow contestant were sent home in a shocking double elimination, Tiffany laughed it off and was ready to kick rocks. But Tyra didn't like this attitude, and made her return to the judging spot and get reamed out by the supermodel turned actress/television personality.

All jokes aside, this freakout is definitely one of the most iconic moments of reality competition TV ever. Hosts of these types of shows are so often stoic and planned in their interactions with the contestants, but you can't deny that Tyra Banks lost control and went off on Tiffany in this clip. And while Banks went on to throw shade at a few other contestants across the years, this one takes the cake. Now she just needs to stay out of trouble at America's Got Talent, after being slapped with a lawsuit by one of the singers.

The first 22 seasons of America's Next Top Model were filled with so many ups and downs that we could never really take anything for granted. One thing that we could always count on, however, was the constantly quotable commentary from host Tyra Banks. She left behind the role of host after the show moved from The CW to VH1, choosing to focus on non-TV business ventures. Recently, however, she announced that she'd resume her hosting duties for Season 24, and she explained her reasoning for returning, saying this:

As it turns out, Tyra Banks' big return to America's Next Top Model is all about pleasing fans of the series. According to TV Guide, Banks made the decision to give viewers what they wanted was at least partly to keep ANTM from being cancelled for good. The series was saved from fading into nothingness when VH1 renewed it following The CW's cancellation; there's no guarantee that it would get another life elsewhere if it got the axe from VH1.

Tyra Banks was replaced by Rita Ora as host for Season 23, and fans apparently did not respond to Ora as well as the folks behind the scenes had hoped. Banks was still on board America's Next Top Model as an executive producer, so we can be sure that she kept a close eye on how many people were watching with Ora as host. What she saw was evidently discouraging enough that she decided to return to her role in front of the camera only a year after she first left it.

Interestingly, she'll be pretty busy in front of the camera in the not-too-distant future. In addition to returning as host of America's Next Top Model, she recently signed on to take Nick Cannon's place as host of America's Got Talent on NBC. We'll have to wait and see if she'll be able to continue focusing on her non-TV business ventures now that she's venturing back onto the small screen.

Tyra Banks sure likes working on shows with "America" in the title. It was recently announced that Tyra Banks would be the new host of America's Got Talent, a gig that will be sure to take up a lot of Banks' time as she takes over for former host Nick Cannon. Hosting just one show would normally be enough for most people, but Banks is nothing if not a multi-tasker, and she will be hosting an additional show, though, it's one she's intimately familiar with. Banks is coming back to host America's Next Top Model, having previously hosted 22 seasons of the competition show.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Banks will join the new season of the long-running competition show and reprise her role as host. Banks previously hosted America's Next Top Model, having been the face of the show for 22 seasons and 12 years. Banks created the show in 2003 and stepped down as host after the show was canceled by the CW in 2015. The show was quickly scooped up by VH1, where it aired its 23rd season just last year. Singer Rita Ora became the new host while Banks stayed on as an executive producer. As for why Banks decided to return after a year away, she cites her fans, saying in a statement that she was "overwhelmed and humbled by the intensity of the ANTM fan base whose deep affection for the show led me to have a change of heart."

This news comes hot on the heels of the announcement that Banks would be the new host of America's Got Talent. Banks will assume her duties as host for Season 12, taking over for Nick Cannon. Cannon announced his departure from the show after NBC executives supposedly considered firing him over comments he made about the company trying to control him during a Showtime stand-up special. NBC ultimately decided to forgive and forget, but Cannon decided it was time to leave the show. Now Banks will step in and we'll have to see how she handles the gig.

It looks like America's Next Top Model is in for some shake-ups in the upcoming fall season. After 22 seasons on the CW, the show will be moving over to its new home on VH1 and it'll be bringing an all new host and judges panel. Tyra Banks will no longer host the show, but will remain on as an executive producer and will make a few surprise appearances throughout the season. The new host of America's Next Top Model will be Rita Ora, a British pop star and actress.

USA Today has the details, and they report that Rita Ora will take over hosting duties from Tyra Banks in Season 23 on VH1. For those of you who don't know who Ora is (like me), she's a pop star with a number one album and four number one singles in the UK. She was also nominated for a Best Original Song at the Oscars for "Grateful" from the movie Beyond the Lights. Not only that, but she's appeared in Fifty Shades of Grey, in addition to a role in both upcoming sequels. She's also got plenty of experience in television. She's served as a judge on ITV's The X-Factor and a coach on BBC's The Voice. Ora wears many hats, all of which are cool and stylish, so she shouldn't have any issue taking the hosting reigns from Banks.

Rita Ora won't be the only new face this season. She'll be joined by three new judges, consisting of Ashley Graham, Drew Elliott and Law Roach (who is not, unfortunately, a sheriff from the Old West). Ashley Graham is best known for being the first plus sized model to be on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Drew Elliot is the chief creative officer of Paper Magazine and the man behind Kim Kardashian's behind for her "Break the Internet" cover photo. Finally, Law Roach is a stylist who has worked with several performers like Zendaya and Ariana Grande. Each one will be lending their unique experiences and point of view to the show.

With this new team comes a new approach to the age-old task of judging models. The show will now be looking for contestants who aren't just savvy on the runway, but also on the internet. Social media is the name of the game and contestants who can get those Instagram likes will find more success on the show than in previous years. The show is now looking for business-minded multitaskers.

America's Next Top Model will return in the fall with 14 new episodes in New York with all female contestants.

What made for a successful formula a decade ago simply doesn't cut it anymore; even for a major iconic television show, looks alone won't garner the ratings that they used to. America’s Next Top Model came to an end last night after being cancelled by The CW, but based off of the ratings, it seems that America really wasn’t all that interested anymore.

Friday's ratings indicate that America’s Next Top Model experienced a dip in viewership last night, despite the occasion of it being the final episode ever. When compared with this time last year, the show experienced no less than a 25% dip in overall viewership. However, in the show’s defense last night’s abysmal ending was not a season low in terms of ratings; Deadline reports that dishonor goes to the two episodes airing in the second half of October.

Despite the low performance for America’s Next Top Model, the show’s lead-in Reign has performed at an even (albeit low) rate all season. This would seemingly indicate that while Reign has managed to maintain an audience, people found themselves definitively unwilling to stick around to watch America’s Next Top Model when it came on at 9 p.m.

ANTM isn't the only niche market reality series like this to have been generally faltering in recent months. This summer also saw the cancellation of TBS reality show King of the Nerds. These shows admittedly had decidedly different core audiences, but the same principle still applied that they were reality series centering upon contests between members of fringe groups – models and geeks, respectively.

In general there seems to be an overall shift taking place in the style of reality competition television. As shows like America's Next Top Model and even American Idol cycle out, they haven't been replaced at the same rate with new reality shows. This means that a lot of the competition series we see on TV are dinosaurs at this point, and as ratings falter, we've seen fewer and fewer competition shows on the air.

Still, we can’t help but applaud America’s Next Top Model for ending a stellar run – despite the fact that it limped across the finish line. The show ran for 22 seasons before finally coming to an end. Last night’s finale saw male model Nyle DiMarco win the overall competition, making him the last ever winner for the reality series, as well as the first ever deaf winner. However, perhaps the greatest contribution America’s Next Top Model ever gave to society is the video below of Tyra Banks yelling at a contestant, check it out below.

So now we have come to the end of an era; it may not have gone out with a bang, but America’s Next Top Model has most certainly had an impact on 21^st century culture. If you still need to get your fix on the lives of models, you’re just going to have to wait for Zoolander 2 to hit theaters.

While new reality programs are hitting the schedule at more infrequent rates these days, there are still a slew of long-running reality competition programs that are going strong—especially on network TV. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and news this week indicates that the long-running America’s Next Top Model will be ending after Season 22. The news comes straight from the horse’s mouth. Tyra Banks, who has hosted the long-running series since its inception, indicated this morning that the show will be ending via social media.

There’s no word from the CW right now that indicates whether the decision was from the network or from Banks and the rest of her creative team, although a little bit of both might be the answer, as well. America’s Next Top Model has had a long fall from its heyday, where it brought in millions of viewers and launched the careers of plenty of women, including Analeigh Tipton, YaYa DaCosta and other big names. The show has been declining in viewership for some time. In fact, back in 2012, the CW shifted its schedule to move ANTM to Friday nights, a primetime timeslot that is notoriously difficult to work with. Last Friday’s episode, for instance, only saw 1 million total viewers tune in, yielding a paltry .3 rating for the series.

All things considered, it's probably time for the show to call it quits. Regardless of the reason for the show’s ending, America’s Next Top Model will air its final episode on Friday, December 4 at 9 p.m. ET, according to Tyra.

Clearly, there’s a niche group of fans who have stuck with America’s Next Top Model over the years and will be sorry to see the series go. But at least the show is getting a proper ending with the Season 22 finale and will go out with a slew of seasons and winners under its belt. That’s a distinction that many—nay most—shows never really get.

Operating a little behind the schedule of the big four networks, the CW issued its annual early return orders, and upon first glance, there's no big surprises. The channel's most popular offering Vampire Diaries will be back for an entire season, along with Supernatural, Gossip Girl, 90210, and of course, America's Next Top Model. Here's where things get interesting though. The renewals themselves might not be shocking, but one of the shows has a big surprise in store for fans.

America's Next Top Model will premiere its first all-star season in the fall. Don't be fooled by the wording though. Today, the network emphasized they'll be bringing back many of the women who had the best stories and most audience appeal. Just in case you were thinking for a second the show was actually about modeling, the CW went ahead and cleared up any confusion. Who the hell am I kidding with this snark though? I'm pumped. I've watched at least fifty hours of ANTM re-runs. I may have gotten away from the series over the last few years, but this all-star season is exactly why God decided to let us record multiple shows at once.

You may have noticed not among the early returns announcements was One Tree Hill. That show's been on life support for awhile, but with five days of programming to plan, it wouldn't be a shock if it ultimately came back for at least part of a season.

No word yet on who America's Next Top Model might bring back for the special season, but TV Blend will bring you that news as soon as it become available.

The CW announced their 2010 Fall premiere schedule and they're starting the season off by blocking the return of America's Next Top Model with the premiere of one of their new series Hellcats.

September 8th will mark the start of the CW’s fall schedule as America’s Next Top Model’s sixteenth cycle premieres, followed by the series premiere of Hellcats. Below is the full premiere schedule, which includes the addition of Nikita to the lineup and the return of some fan-favorites, including the premiere of the final season of Smallville

The CW announced their 2009-2010 schedule today. It includes a day-change for Smallville and the addition of a few new series including the Melrose Place spinoff/remake, which is set to air following 90210

Smallville was moved to Fridays to make room for The Vampire Diaries, which will air before Supernatural on Thursday nights. Smallville is partnered with a rerun of America’s Next Top Model and if you ask me, that in addition to the new Friday night spot doesn’t bode well for the series. Oh, sure the diehard fans will still tune in or at the very least, DVR it but it seems doubtful that the network is looking to boost ratings for the series.

Samantha is on a high after winning last week’s photo shoot challenge. Marjorie, on the other hand, is devastated to have found herself in the bottom two for the first time all cycle. She struggles to strike a balance between her nervousness and her edge, fearing (correctly) that the disappearance of her quirks will cause her to lose her je ne sais quois.

Tyra Post: “A model who knows how to sell makes the most sense. Love, Tyra”

The girls meet Paulina Porizkova at a beautiful loft where she leads them in their teach for the week: selling without speaking. How do you convey the five senses wordlessly while trying to hawk cell phones, toilet paper, and barrels of herring? Sam thinks you have to grin like an idiot, but Paulina likes how she’s able to capture the joy in each product. Paulina calls Analeigh a natural actress but says she wasn’t always aware of lighting and camera position, the cardinal rule of modeling. Marjorie has trouble depicting a romantic conversation on the cell but soon calms down her jitters; Paulina compliments her on how accessible her emotions are – well, that’s a nice way of saying it. McKey’s the only one “model-like” in her salesmanship; Paulina observes that everything she does to sell her products is posed – that is a compliment, right?

Tyra Post: “Your delivery better be on Mark. Love, Tyra”

The next morning, the girls meet Paulina at Amsterdam Worldwide, one of the top boutique ad agencies in Amsterdam, where she introduces them to its executive creative director Richard Gorodecky. Their first challenge of the week is to audition for a 30-second commercial for a sports shoe. Here’s the corny scenario: the girls will each be playing a young runner jogging past a yellow cab in the city; Jogger spots a cute guy in the backseat; they exchange flirtatious glances before the taxi pulls away; up ahead, Jogger sees that the cab has come to a stop to let Cutie out; Jogger seizes the moment and runs up to Cutie, plants a big kiss on his lips, jumps in his cab, and the taxi pulls off; now it’s Cutie’s turn to give chase. And the part of Cutie will be played by male supermodel Mark Vanderloo! Maybe it’s just me but he looks a tad bit old to be sucking face with these barely legal girls.

Sam wonders whether she should slip Mark the tongue but opts for over-the-top adorability instead. Paulina and Richard think she’s fun to watch but a bit too, too cute. Analeigh’s performance is more subtle and Richard is impressed with her acting. The first portion of McKey’s audition is good, but she loses momentum and focus once she heads to Mark for the kiss. Marjorie injects her usual dose of awkwardness into her performance. But it works! She gives Richard something unexpected and he finds her performance to be the most honest of all the girls. Paulina declares Marj the winner of the challenge and awards her a $10,000 shopping spree at G-Star, a premiere Dutch denim company; she chooses Analeigh to share the prize with her.

This win is just what Marjorie needs to crack her up for good. To hell with low self-esteem, anxiety, and hunchbacks! Time to get loose! Real loose. She decides to invite the guys who transported them on their go sees last week over to the Top Model Amsterdam House for drinks, food, drinks, laughs, and drinks! Before long, she’s sloppy drunk and the party gets messy. Charades turns to Truth or Dare and Marj finds herself in the tub with some strange guy she just made out with. Feels like a re-run of ANTM Cycle 2 when Shandi got wasted and slept with the Italian male model, except Marj has no man back home to confess to long distance. Just all in bad fun.

Tyra Post: “Tomorrow you’ll be going Dutch, but you’re gonna have to give 100%. Love, Tyra”

The photo shoot challenge takes place in the Dutch countryside where the girls are photographed in avant garde wear against a backdrop of windmills.

Analeigh

She’s dynamic on set and Jay Manuel loves the variety she brings to her poses. Her best shot depicts her jumping in the air holding a pitchfork planted in the ground and the judges love it. Nigel Barker notes that she seems inspired by the windmill in the background so everything about the picture works. Seventeen Magazine editor-in-chief and guest judge Ann Shoket loves how she appears so sweet-natured before them but transforms into a beast on film.

Marjorie

Marj must still be feeling it from her wild night ‘cause she’s horrible. She looks bored, confused, lost. After the shoot, Jay gives her some great advice: if your photo’s wack, step up your game at panel. She tries to appear more composed before the judges than she’s done in the past, but she just comes across as flat. Nigel thinks she’s lost her charm along with her jangly nerves and Ann interprets her behavior as condescension.

Samantha

Sam lets the pain of wearing clogs steal her joy. Misery reads all over her face on set and leaves her photos lackluster. She’s torn up over Jay’s disappointment but pulls it together to get some great photos at the end of the shoot. Then she ruins it all by showing up to panel dressed like a suburban teen at the mall trying to fake fashion.

McKey

Is brilliant, as usual. Ann loves her endless legs and Tyra recognizes that she’s truly found her niche: powerful poses with a hint of femininity. And the judges think her outfit at panel is fantastic (I’m a little wary of the Parisian hooker waitress look, though). Okay, it’s a wrap – this chick’s definitely winning ANTM!

Challenge winner: Analeigh. Bottom two: Marjorie, for failing to find that balance (despite being a Libra, ha, ha), and Samantha, for being goofy and clueless. Au revoir, mon ami! Incredibly good pictures all season long are not enough, so Marjorie is sent home.

I hate these types of episodes. Season recaps without officially being reruns. In case you missed it, come watch our mid-cycle overview all over again with new, unseen footage! The lazy ANTM producers must think we’re dumb. The hardcore, faithful fans have seen this all before. And for those who haven’t been watching up until this point, you don’t need to know what’s been going on. Yes, sometimes behind-the-scenes antics and interviews can be fun to watch. But for the most part, they’re just filler for empty episodes when the cast and crew stop production for a strike or an extended vacay in Cabo.

This week’s ep takes an unnecessary trip down Memory Lane, revisiting past contestants, previous challenges, and pose-offs galore. Remember The Top Model Institute of Technology, Alpha J, Beta Jay, and Tyrabot? Yeah, I wish I could forget them all, too. How about Hannah’s re-enactment with Tyra of a run-in with a moose or Isis’ initial confession of being “born in the wrong body”? And what of Sharaun, Cycle 11’s first reject and one of the fakest, most annoying contestants to make it through to the semi-finals? The hour is packed with plenty of other familiar stuff like the “Voting is Sexy” photo shoot, the Jeremy Scott runway show, Sheena’s hoochieness, Marjorie’s twitchiness, and makeovers.

Some of the cutting-room floor scenes that are shared with us include: Samantha keeping a stiff upper lip while sleeping on the floor the first night in the Top Model House; an argument between Sheena and Elina over animal rights; Nikeysha dropping some funky rhymes in the hot tub; talcum powder play-fights between Brittany R. and Isis; Marjorie’s backstage “love affair” with Analeigh; Joslyn’s stage debut with the Misfit of Magic; and more.

I definitely could’ve done without watching the girls chase a bee from the Top Model House. Or knowing how Alaska Pixie Dust protects Hannah from mean girls. Or how McKey’s allegedly trying to fatten the other girls up with homemade French onion soup. Or what water conservation in Tyra World looks like (Samantha, Clark, and Lauren Brie squooshed and covered in bubbles in the bathtub). Okay, there’s a lot I could’ve done without seeing this week.

After living through the first six weeks of ANTM (all over again), here are the remaining seven contestants:

At a shoot with photographer Jim de Yonker, Tyra teaches the girls about finding a trademark, like Gisele Bündchen’s swayed back or her own intense eyes. Analeigh takes her “rebel ice skater” style a little too literally and doesn’t bring much rebellion to the set. McKey’s “boxer” stance works after Tyra instructs her to act like she’s been punched in the face. Samantha got one compliment the other week and decides to run with it: Tyra told her she’s one of the best hand models she’s seen in a long time, so Sam makes “her hands” her signature. But she just ends up looking goofy.

Lauren Brie’s “surfer chick” is confusing and really, really boring. Sheena keeps fighting against the hooch, so Tyra hands her a “cultural dance” style to highlight her ethnicity while downplaying her sexiness. Joslyn finds strength in her “profile” and Elina embodies “Top Model of the world,” whatever that means. The best of the bunch is Marjorie, who creates a character for her signature based on her awkwardness and bowed spine: “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Okay, she doesn’t actually create the character but it works perfectly for her – she’s French with a hump! Let’s work with it! Tyra loves it too and declares her the winner of the challenge. Marjorie and a friend (Analeigh) each get to select one piece of gold and diamond jewelry from Rafinity.

Tyra Mail: “You better bring it or you’re never going to work in this town again! Love, Tyra”

The girls meet Jay Manuel at the Grand Orpheum Theater for this weeks’ photo shoot with returning photographer and guest judge Mike Rosenthal. They’re asked to ham it up a bit by recreating embarrassing scenarios from an awards show a la The Fiercees, Tyra’s manufactured awards extravaganza.

Marjorie: Using the Restroom in a Gown

Marjorie uses her awkwardness brilliantly and Jay loves how she maintains a fashionable look despite posing hunched over a toilet. She does fabulous extreme posing with her skirt hiked up and her legs akimbo. Tyra’s impressed how seamlessly she manages to incorporate her teach into the shoot and M is Mike’s favorite model of the day.

Samantha: Can’t Read Cue Cards

Samantha is supposed to look like she can’t read her cue cards because the spotlight keeps getting in her eyes. She’s still looking and acting too goofy, and Jay doesn’t appreciate the extra cheese she puts into her “acting” – it’s too dramatic and fake. Paulina Porizkova can’t tell whether Sam’s blinded by the light, about to cry, or getting ready to sneeze. J. Alexander isn’t very excited by the final result. Both Tyra and Paulina think the pic only looks good because Mike did such a great job with the photography.

Elina: Over-Emotional Winner

Elina finally explains why she has no feelings: she was raised behind the Iron Curtain with a cold, demanding Russian for a mother (no wonder she hates her). So, of course they have to give the Ukrainian with no soul the character of an overly emotional actress accepting an award through boo-hoos. Elina comes on set with a fake tear streaking her cheek, but Jay wants method acting to turn on the real water works. Once he helps her tap into her fear of failure, she starts to really cry. In a highly controlled manner, of course. Paulina admits that the camera loves her, but she doesn’t look over-emotional in the shot at all. Nigel advises her to drop her steely exterior in exchange for success in an industry where displaying emotion is key.

Lauren Brie: Trips on the Stairs

She’s pretty but vacant. Instead of just throwing herself down, Lauren Brie forces a pose that’s supposed to look like a trip. Jay thinks she looks “like a mannequin falling” and Tyra says she didn’t let go enough during the teach or the shoot. Miss J. believes she may have relied on hair and makeup too much. Nigel calls her out as a pretty girl whose coasted through the competition without evolving. Last week, I praised her for flying under the radar. She’s obviously way too under.

McKey: Believes She’s Going to Win, But Loses

Paulina is happy to see her living up to her potential. Nigel says it’s the most beautiful picture she’s taken, but Tyra thinks it would’ve been more interesting if she could’ve depicted more of an internal struggle to keep her composure. Mike says the shot came out great, but it was like pulling teeth to get it.

Sheena: Starlet Steps on Her Gown

Although she looks beautiful in her hair and dress, she doesn’t satisfy the judges. Jay doesn’t find her pretty or believable; for fear of the Ghost of Hoochies Past, she reels in her personality too much and appears flat on set. Paulina even thinks she could’ve used her body more. Nigel is only disturbed by her “possessed” eyes. Despite the criticism, Tyra is still impressed with her classier, more subdued presence before the panel.

Joslyn: Another Starlet in the Same Gown

Tyra thinks it’s the prettiest shot of Joslyn they’ve seen so far in the competition. She gives her props for a great profile which starts Jossy bawling over self-esteem issues. Shut up, sweetie! You a model now – big nose and all!

Analeigh: Interviewer with an Attitude

Analeigh nails a look of bitchy boredom. Mike is very impressed with her use of emotion and how well she captured her character for the camera. At the start of the cycle, Paulina didn’t see the makings of a model in Analeigh, but after this picture she’s beginning to come around.

Marjorie scores a double win this week and will have her picture displayed as digital art in the Top Model house. Bottom two: Sheena, for holding back too much, and Lauren Brie, for boring everyone to tears. My girl dodges a bullet and Lauren Brie is sent home.

Next Week: The girls continue to sharpen their acting chops in a commercial and there’s beef between Sheena and Elina.

Last week, Elina won the photo shoot challenge and her picture was chosen to be displayed as digital art in the Top Model house with the descriptive phrases, “racially ambiguous,” “unique,” and “stunningly beautiful.” At the previous panel, Analeigh received an emotional beat-down and it shakes her to the core. Fearful of being in the bottom two again, she opens up to Marjorie and Hannah. Marjorie is sympathetic, but Hannah refuses to join the “pity party.” M calls her on her heartlessness, but Hannah doesn’t seem to care. Why wallow? “You pick up your beans and you keep rolling.” What is that, Hannah? Some quaint, small-town Alaska colloquialism?

Tyra Mail: “Tomorrow, your model dreams could end up in the gutter! Love, Tyra”

The girls meet J. Alexander at the Lucky Strike bowling alley where they practice runway walking down the lanes in high heels. Isis is the first to slip and slide, but she has a lot of oomph in her walk. Analeigh’s walk is boring and too slow; when Ms. J asks her to speed it up, she still keeps traipsing along at the same pace. Joselyn’s runway performance is EXTRA special; Ms. J appreciates the arms raised above her head and the sweeping turns but advises her to rein it in just a bit. Samantha does a good job of turning a negative into something she can work with; Ms. J makes fun of her bow legs, but Sam intends to make them her trademark. Hannah’s walk is terrible! She needs help beyond what Ms. J or anyone else can provide.

Back at the Top Model house, Hannah practices her runway walk with help from some of the other girls and seems to think it might be helping. (Psst! Don’t tell her, but she still looks really awful.) Lauren Brie and Clark talk smack about Isis, claiming she’s too mannish to make it in the modeling world. However, Isis still seems cool and confident, and friends like McKey have her back.

Tyra Mail: “You think you have this competition in the bank? You may be walking right out of it… Love, Tyra”

For the runway challenge, the girls are blindfolded and model designs by avant garde fashion artist Jeremy Scott. Held at a vintage bank, the theme of the show is opulence and cat burglary. Seventeen Magazine Editor-in Chief Ann Shoket announces that the winner and two friends will participate in an advertorial shoot wearing designs by 15-year old Russian designer Kira Plastinina (do you feel like an underachiever, yet?). Fellow guest judge Jay Manuel rains on their parade by informing the girls that the losing model will be immediately eliminated from the competition.

I guess anyone can be a fashion designer these days, right? Some of Jeremy’s pieces are interesting, like the printed fringed outfit Isis wears, while others are merely “interesting,” like McKey’s complicated set of drapes replete with a curtain rod across the shoulder blades. Hmmm... Joslyn has fabulous runway presence and Analeigh impresses Ms. J, while Samantha and Hannah flounder. Joslyn is declared the winner and she chooses Sheena and Isis to join her on her Seventeen shoot. Hannah of Sunnybrook Igloo (yeah, it’s a stereotype) is sent packing. What was the first lesson we learned from week 1, sweetie? Remember Kacey and Sharaun? Don’t be a hater!

Tyra Mail: “This competition is deep! Some will rise above and some will go under. Love, Tyra”

The next morning, Jay arrives bright and early at the Top Model house dressed as a lifeguard and wakes the girls for the photo shoot challenge. Everyone’s relieved to hear that this week’s shoot will take place right there at the house. They’re even more excited to be introduced to their guest photographer: oh-so-ultra-fine Nigel Barker! In the pool! Dripping wet! They will all be shot from the nose up with the bottom half of their faces submerged underwater.

Sheena

Sheena leaves behind the softness from previous pictures and amps up the intensity this week. Jay only mentions the word, “hooch” to say that he won’t be calling her one this time around.

Joslyn

Jossy fails to mention that she can’t swim. But it reads all over face, at least the part of her face we can see above water. The panic makes a pretty picture, though.

Marjorie

Her shot freaks out Paulina Porizkova who describes it as “the headless horseman drowning in a pool of his own blood.” Wow, Paulina. Who hurt you? What nightmares do you have that cause you to see that? Nigel reminds Paulina that high fashion isn’t always about looking pretty, and Tyra concurs; it’s about pushing it to another level and getting a strong reaction out of your audience.

Lauren Brie

Tyra loves the mystery in her eyes. The arms extended above her head and the intertwined hands are gorgeous! Ms. J thinks they look like swans.

Isis

As with last week’s swimsuit challenge, Isis spends the entire shoot too concerned about hiding the goodies – so much so, that she allows it to hamper her whole performance. Too bad, because all anyone can see is the top of her head anyway. Jay instructs her to watch the droopy eyes but it doesn’t work. During judging, Paulina points out that Isis’ arm looks more important in the picture than her eyes, which defeats the purpose of the shoot. Paulina is also disappointed that Isis seems to be trying so hard to fit in that she’s become forgettable.

Clark

During the shoot, Nigel asks Clark what’s on her mind; she responds that she’s imagining herself lying on a bed. You go, Clark! If I were in that pool, I’d have been flirting with Nigel too. Well, whether it was flirtation or plain old-fashioned fierceness, it works. Nigel thinks she’s the only model to “smile with her whole body.” The rest of the panel also love her picture.

McKey

Paulina claims that she would’ve liked McKey’s shot a whole lot more if her hand didn’t look like a big club rising out of the water.

Elina

Her control freak nature takes over again and she struggles to let go during the shoot. She gets wrapped up in too much thinking and freezes when asked for more variety. Tyra calls her one of the weakest this week and gives her constructive criticism to counteract her hooded eyes: to prevent the meaty brow ridge from hiding her eyes, she should’ve gone straight down into the pool rather than angle her face forward.

Analeigh

She really steps up her game and finally lives up to the judges’ expectations by using her athleticism to her advantage. She poses her legs above the water and looks incredible, like a ’40s pin-up sea nymph.

Samantha

On set, Jay is impressed with how strange and unique her poses are. Tyra says there isn’t another model working now or over the past five years who can work their hands like Samantha can. However, guest judge Jeremy Scott is still so disgusted by her performance during the runway challenge that he overlooks how good her picture actually is. He gets mighty heated that she apparently disrespected his clothing, and he describes her walk and end of catwalk pose as a cross between a truck driver and a stripper! These fashion types can be a little self-important, sometimes. Okay, all the times.

After deliberations, Clark is declared the winner. Bottom two: Isis, for fading into the background, and Samantha, for insulting Jeremy Scott. For all the potential she possessed, I’m shocked to see Isis leave so soon. To me, it was not her time to go. She had real heart and guts to take part in this competition, so congrats to her for opening the door for other transgendered people to break into mainstream fashion.

Next Week: The girls get frustrated by Marjorie’s insecurities, but M lashes back – she almost, kinda curses! Plus, the beauties pose with a real beast, and I select my top three.

This week’s first Tyra Mail is oh so nasty: “Don’t get it twisted; will you bend over backwards to be on top? Love, Tyra.” And of course Sheena’s the only one to scream out, “Oh, yes I would!” I bet you would, honey.

Rubbery-limbed Mr. Fantastic posing instructor and voguing master Benny Medina returns to the show this cycle to teach the girls about extreme poses. Australian model and contortionist Bree Robertson joins him for the lesson, folded neatly inside a teeny-tiny box – I can’t breathe just looking at her; I hope they don’t make the girls do something stupid like that because that’s just not right and really dangerous and somebody might be claustrophobic like me and have asthma or a panic attack or a stroke or something and I would sue the producers’ asses if I had to... Whew! It’ll be alright. Let me count to ten. 1…2…3…

Well, their task isn’t quite as bad, but much sillier: they have to pose extremely while encased in a red fabric tube. Most of the girls struggle, including Isis whose constant challenge will be to create and maintain a soft, pretty face. But of course Sheena possesses the natural ability to throw her ankles behind her ears.

Back at the pad, it’s Models Gone Wild as the girls meet in the hot tub for Truth or Dare. Sheena expresses the desire to drop her hoochie image and, in fact, doesn’t even see herself as such (so says the girl winding her waist and making her booty clap). Elina’s wishes come true as she gets her first kiss from Clark. It would be kind of sweet seeing Elina moon over her crush, but I’m feeling sad for the poor thing. A straight girl is dared to kiss you. It’s a dare. Meaning that in normal circumstances, it would be the last thing on her mind. Let’s move on before she breaks your heart on national TV.

Hannah’s a pathetic mess, surrounded by black, lesbian, and transgendered girls, all of whom don’t reside in Alaska. Right, Hann? Isis accidentally gets a little too close for comfort so Hannah freaks out and roughly pushes her away, setting off a lukewarm discussion/confrontation about race and prejudice. She explains away her behavior by claiming to be a “typical white girl” who doesn’t like rap music or shout “Heeeyyy!” in the middle of a quiet room. Er…what? When most of the non-Caucasian girls call her out, she bawls. Wipe your eyes and pull down your skirt, Fairbanks. Your ignorance is showing.

The next day, Benny challenges the girls to put their extreme posing to the test by auditioning for jewelry and handbag designer Tarina Tarantino. A number of girls use their toes to hold the bags and Hannah plays set decorator by placing her purse atop a chandelier. Elina wins the challenge and a handbag of goodies, but not before Nikeysha announces to the client that she just might “pee up” herself before the audition’s through. And not before Sheena wraps a leg behind her neck and throws her handbag smack-dab in front of her cooch! Of course.

Tyra Mail: “You want to be on top? Then you better start climbing that ladder! Love, Tyra.”

For the photo challenge, the girls meet Jay Manuel in a field floating too high above the ground in a hot air balloon – Another phobia of mine, but who’s counting? They don’t have to pose in the balloon, do they? Photographer Mike Ruiz will be snapping them dangling from a ladder suspended from the balloon’s basket… Um, Excuse me?

Analeigh

The balloon doesn’t want to cooperate and the wind blows it violently twenty feet in every direction, so Jay and Mike decide to use a crane to hold the ladder instead and the balloon will be digitally inserted later. Analeigh isn’t especially inspiring. During judging, Nigel Barker is disappointed with her apparent lack of commitment and Paulina Porizkova thinks her face looks like she’s thinking too much. However, guest judge Tarina thinks she’s holding a perfect pose.

Samantha

Jay points out that Samantha’s failure lies in lack of garment awareness – the dress clings and rumples in the wrong places. Nigel sees her as much more full-figured than she actually is due to every woman’s worst enemy: shiny fabric.

Hannah

Nigel finds Hannah’s pic “unexpected” with nice angles, but J. Alexander is put off by her face.

Nikeysha

Tyra wants to know what Ni-Ni’s had to eat today, ‘cause that girl is skinny! You just noticed that? She looks sick. Paulina describes her photo as “a paper bag with pipe cleaners coming out of it.” Harsh, but true.

Lauren Brie

Jay is blown away on set. Tarina and Ms. J. love the “broken doll pose” and the rest of the panel think her photo just might be one of the top 5 Top Model shots ever!

McKey

Every time the photographer tries to capture a pose or a facial expression, McKey keeps switching and the moment is lost. At judging, Tyra uses this as a segue into a story about herself and her own battle to hold poses on set for long periods of time while shaking and trying to stay pretty for the camera, blah, blah, blah.

Clark

Clark sits down on the ladder and loses about 4 inches of her height because we can’t see her lap. Before the panel, she shows up wearing about 4 inches of bronzer on her face.

Isis

Despite feeling a bit nauseous from her hormone shot, Isis manages to achieve fantastic face in her photo. Nigel likes the way she looks like she’s falling from the ladder, but Paulina isn’t impressed with the pose; she wants something much more interesting from her arms. Speaking of not too interesting, Tyra hates her drab look in person. If you want to be a model, you must look like one (or at least an aspiring one) at all times.

Marjorie

Our petit croissant looks like a diva with her long blonde weave and oodles of confidence. But she’s still a shrinking violet before the judges. Ms. J. instructs her to bring whatever’s in the picture to panel each week.

Elina

Jay and Tarina are impressed with her ethereal quality, and Tyra gets excited by the wind blowing in her hair.

Sheena

My girl comes to judging looking like, guess what? A hoochie! Paulina takes one look at her photo and asks her if her super perky boobies are fake. Oh, no ma’am! Without hesitation. Until after the judges finish critiquing the last girl and she finally admits that they absolutely are silicon fun bags. Despite the initial lie, the judges are impressed with her eventual honesty. Now, when is someone going to ask the obvious question: How long have you been shakin’ it for them dollars?

Brittney

Gorgeous face, but Jay believes she doesn’t know yet how to harness her own power. She proves to Tyra that she can earn $1 million doing catalogue, but isn’t quite there when it comes to high fashion.

Joslyn

On set, Jay loves how she gives Lauren Brie a run for her money. Tyra likes that she looks like she’s doing a flamenco dance in mid-air.

This week’s best photo belongs to Lauren Brie – it will be displayed as digital art in the Top Model house for a week. The bottom two: Nikeysha for her continued diarrhea of the mouth, and Isis for losing some of her “It factor.” Nikeysha is sent packing and you’d think that would finally shut her up. No such luck…

It’s Cycle 11 of Tyra Banks’ baby, America’s Next Top Model and I’m too excited! Bear with me as I try to recount all the many new happenings this time around. And there’s a lot – my smoking keyboard will be testament to that.

The theme for this season seems to be all about The Future. The eager semi-finalists gather at The Top Model Institute of Technology and are met by Alpha J (a.k.a., runway diva extraordinaire J. Alexander) and Beta Jay (a.k.a., celebrity makeup artist/fashion photographer Jay Manuel), both dressed as Ziggy Stardust twins. They instruct the girls to don skin-tight bodysuits and boots before submitting to a full body scan (a.k.a., photograph) and runway walk analysis. Tyrabot (or oversized, robotic Tyra Barbie) shows up and sends the girls into fits of screams. And the competiton begins. Let’s meet some of the girls…

Brittney B., 18 from Chicago, IL

From the sound of her, she’s already trying to trademark herself, and, sister, I can’t hate on you for that. What I can hate is the monster attitude with nothing to back it up. Britt, you can’t even name three designers? Even I know Valentino, Versace, and Badgley Mischka! Me, the girl who owns one pair of badly scuffed boots and wears grey wool pants in the summertime. She should be ashamed. Oh, and let me not forget the lucky panties she insists on carrying. Not wearing. Carrying. In her hand. And pressing against her face. Good Lord, I hope she wasn’t just wearing those.

Lauren Brie, 20 from Charlottesville, VA

The most interesting thing about her is that her father is the Chief of Police for her podunk hometown. She thinks she looks exotic, but to me she could be Sarah Jane from next door. Ho hum.

Analeigh, 19 from Sacramento, CA

A former competitive figure skater who tells a crazy story about being approached by a fake modeling agency recruiter who attempts to sell her as a bride to a Saudi prince!

Clark, 19 from Pawleys Island, SC

A perfectionist who thinks she’s the prettiest girl in the competition (she’s not) and claims to have no body image issues.

Kacey, 19 from Palmdale, CA

A black girl called “white girl” by those she knows for the white friends she used to have. Used to have, but not anymore. Why? Because they couldn’t understand why she refused to go swimming. Are you for real? Yes, we see it’s a weave. And I think by this decade even your white friends are hip to that. Nice try with the ingratiating back story, but Tyra sees right through it and so do I.

Marjorie, 19 from San Francisco, CA by way of Marseilles, France

Finally! The goofy, awkward, nervous wannabe model with the freaky laugh and small humpback who’ll probably go really, really far (a la Heather from Cycle 9). I’m dying to give honey a ham & swiss croissant, though.

Veronique, 19 from Riverside, CA

A Mormon wildchild sent to a lockdown facility for three months after having underage premarital sex with her ex-boyfriend. Bet you wish you had Gov. Palin as your mama, right? All you would’ve had to worry about was whether to serve chicken or fish at the shotgun wedding reception.

Isis, 22 from Prince George’s County, MD This girl is fierce but not that beautiful, and it’s not because she was born a he… Okay, if you’re catching flies right now you must have been living under a rock for the past few weeks: Isis is the first transgender contestant on the show. And pre-op, no less. Her biological sex doesn’t make her unattractive (I’ve seen some divalicious men make prettier females than most women), but she has one of those ugly-pretty faces Tyra’s always talking about that make great photos. Last season, she was an extra on a photo shoot who captured Tyra’s eye for knowing how to work the couture poses.

I’ve got mad respect for Isis for admitting that although she’s proud to represent for the gay, lesbian, and transgender community, she’s really in this contest for herself and her own dreams. She shouldn’t have to be a walking, talking, posing billboard. However, she does wear a huge target. Those vicious, backbiting girls in the competition start whispering (especially Brittney B. and Kacey) but Isis takes it all in stride, more woman than any of them. The shock and muted disgust on their faces is funny, especially considering this girly-boy is gonna kick their pretty little booties all over the catwalk.

Sheena, 21 from Harlem, NY

The most ghetto fabulous Asian chick I’ve ever seen! Besides Kimora, of course, and the resemblance is uncanny. During the earlier runway walk analysis, she was the only model to partially unzip her bodysuit, foreshadowing some of the hoochiness to come. I like her already.

Lindsey, 23 from Clinton, MS

A married plus-size model who Tyra thinks is a little small to be plus-size. Don’t worry, T, the camera adds 30 lbs.

Brittany R., 19 from Henderson, NV

A biracial girl (African American mother, Native American father) with some modeling experience; was the first African American female to get the cover of The Las Vegas Weekly. She wants to show the Greater Las Vegas area that there is an African American presence in local modeling and in the community. It’s true – it was my hometown for a hot minute and black folk are there in droves.

Hannah, 18 from Fairbanks, AK

A naïve young thing from the land of snow, ice, and snow. And she won’t let us forget she lives in the sticks.

Joslyn, 23 from Lucky, LA

A Southern gal who claims to have auditioned for ANTM over 30 times! Has the nerve to point out how much “older” and thus more mature than the other girls she is. At the age of 23. Shut up. No, really. Shut up. Mr. Jay is so wrong, your accent is not charming and the squeaky pitch is closer to nails on a chalkboard.

Renee, 19 from Inglewood, TN

Wants to put Memphis on the fashion map???

Elina, 18 from Seattle, WA

A dark, brooding, vegan omnisexual with a developing crush on fellow contestant Clark; wants to use modeling as a platform for her own personal activism agenda. What agenda? “Save the Skinny Jeans”? Or “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Last Season’s Shoes”?

Nikeysha, 19 from The Bronx, NY

Each cycle, the contestants’ desperate enthusiasm bugs the crap out of me. At this point, I’m losing my patience fast. Nikeysha shares her joy by very gingerly raising the roof over and over. Wait a minute. Let me fasten my seatbelt and drive the DeLorean back to the real future. Tyra mentions the fact that Nikeysha flashed the camera during her audition tape. Oh, Ni-Ni, that wasn’t an invitation to do it again! It was the start of a warning – don’t ever do it again. But you’re still not hearing; I guess that’s why you’re removing your gel bra inserts and tossing them at the judges.

Brittany S., 19 from Lake Forest, IL

Mothers, there are other names for your baby girls. There’s Sharon and Linda and Sue – yes, a bit boring, but come on! This is the third Brittany/Brittney of the competition! This particular B-girl practices mixed martial arts with her cage fighter boyfriend and can only pose in a boxer’s stance.

Susan, 23 from Canton, MI

The brain of the group, supposedly. She recently graduated from Harvard but can’t name her favorite English lit heroine, despite being an English major. I think mommy and daddy need to demand their tuition money back.

Samantha, 18 from Woodland Hills, CA

A tanned, athletic girl who wants to represent health and fitness in her modeling career. However, she can’t expect to turn the industry on its ear if she knows nothing about it. When she can’t name five current models, Tyra launches into the first of many Ty-rades, lecturing the poor girl on the importance of doing her homework. Note to audience: these micro-speeches are just T’s excuse to talk about herself (“Back in my day, we didn’t have ANTM, blah,blah…”).

Twenty girls advance to Phase II in which they participate in a photo shoot wearing metallic catsuits and posing with giant, inflatable silver bouncy balls. If this is the future, I want no part of it.

Samantha bugs out with the makeup, Marjorie gives good neck (get your minds out of the gutter), Brittany R. flirts her way through the shoot but forgets who she’s batting her eyelashes at (Jay does not care), and Elina poses well with her hands. Lauren Brie and Analeigh strike some great athletic poses, the latter model reminding Jay of old school Claudia Schiffer. However, my fave has to be Sheena. She slides her clumsy behind on top of all three balls and expects perfect balance (man, that does not sound right).

After review by the judges, the twenty girls are whittled down to the Fierce Fourteen:

The finalists move into their beautiful L.A. Top Model House, outfitted with pool, Jacuzzi, and copious gigantic pictures of Tyra. They get acquainted, get catty, and get their first Tyra Mail: “Tomorrow, it’s going to get really intimate in under a minute. I assure you it will be…magical. Love, Tyra.”

The following day, the girls meet at The Magic Castle Hotel & Club, a Hollywood landmark and the world’s most famous private club for magicians. Ed Alonzo, The Misfit of Magic, performs a couple of lame tricks before revealing his true purpose: introducing the girls to the judges for the day’s challenge. Mr. Jay and Ms. J. parade across the stage as magician’s assistants, pushing a large magic box. With a flourish, Ed throws back a curtain in front of the once-empty box to reveal drop-dead gorgeous, absolutely fine Nigel Barker, noted fashion photographer and former model – I need one of those magic boxes! Out of a second box steps supermodel Paulina Porizkova in a hot red dress. Each of the contestants has the opportunity to meet one-on-one with the four judges to prove their potential. Some make a great first impression (Isis, Samantha), while others don’t (Sharaun is especially creepy and Marjorie’s jangly nerves make me and Nigel uncomfortable).

That night, the girls receive a second Tyra mail: “Fashion isn’t the only way to make a statement.” Hint for the photo shoot challenge. The following day, the girls meet Jay and photographer Mike Rosenthal on set for the shoot with a timely theme: Voting is Sexy. The models are assigned different political themes for which they must transform themselves for the camera.

Marjorie: Immigration

Jay is impressed with her variety on set. Her awkward poses work well and look like they came straight out of the pages of a fashion editorial. During judging, Nigel brings up her nervousness and wants to see less of it (me too), but everyone else disagrees: Paulina sees a brain behind the face, Ms. J. loves her lines and angles, and Tyra describes her photo as “divine.”

Brittany: Military

At first, Jay sees a little Vegas showgirl in some of her poses, but she eventually settles into the right feel for the theme. The end result is a shot that makes her look six feet tall, powerful, and confident.

Clark: Bureaucracy

Okay, this girl has no idea what her theme even means. She asks McKey to help her, but her competitor cleverly refuses to answer. Or maybe McKey doesn’t know what it means, either. Clark’s confusion shows through in the photo. Paulina thinks she looks like a Black Widow waiting to trap a man in her red tape web. Apparently, that’s not a good thing.

McKey: Environment

She also struggles to translate her topic to film, so Jay suggests she find her sexy side by envisioning a sparring session with her boyfriend. What we get is weird shadow boxing that makes an interesting photo. But she better come with something new next time; this isn’t “America’s Next Top Streetfighter”!

Hannah: Nuclear Weapons

She doesn’t know how she feels about nuclear weapons, but I’d love to know her opinion if she heard North Korea were aiming a long-range missile at Fairbanks.

Elina: Foreign Policy

She masters the “smiling with your eyes” technique and Jay is very impressed. The judges also love the pic.

Isis: Privacy

ANTM producers, we are not stupid. We get the message. I’m sure poor Isis doesn’t want to be hit over the head with something she already loves with every day, but she knows what she needs to do to get to the top. Other girls pose in her shot, pretending to invade her voting privacy. Led by Sharaun, they make really nasty comments, but unfazed Isis keeps working it out.

Sheena: Energy

Jay, why bother trying to control the hoochiness when wardrobe puts the girl in a short, red sequin dress and gives her a gasoline hose to hold?

Joslyn: Unemployment

Actually unemployed Joslyn receives the best compliment from Jay: her work is “almost Tyra Banks hot.”

Analeigh: Healthcare

Nigel doesn’t get “healthcare” from the photo. What, Nigel? You’ve never seen a night nurse bending over a gurney in a black cocktail dress? Paulina sees the theme, but cautions her against turning away from her light source.

Sharaun: Homeland Security

The stiffness in her face and neck make Jay and Mike believe she’s thinking way too much. In the final product, Nigel thinks she looks like she’s chained to the airport metal detector rather than protecting the nation.

Samantha: Economy

Knocks it out the park in the first shot. Paulina thinks her look is reminiscent of “healthier” (read: “curvier”) models from her decade. Tyra compares her to model Bridget Hall.

Lauren Brie: Education

Like Analeigh, Lauren Brie also experiences trouble following her lighting and casts a shadow over one of her eyes. Nigel warns her that if the audience doesn’t see her eyes, we lose her message.

Nikeysha: Cloning

Through the magic of photography, Nikeysha is replicated in her picture to represent human cloning. Jay thinks she shows great variety in her body but little change in her face. Paulina hates the way her legs look and tries to offer advice, but Nikeysha keeps cutting her off with excuses. Then Tyra tries to offer advice and the girl does the same thing again. Bad.

After deliberations, the judges declare Marjorie the winner – don’t second-guess yourself, sweetie. Her photo will be on display in the Top Model House for a week.

The bottom two: Sharaun for her phony persona and overconfidence during the one-on-ones, and Nikeysha for talking back to the judges and not openly accepting criticism. And the first casualty is Sharaun. Lesson to be learned, Kacey and Sharaun: Don’t be haters!

Next Week: Obligatory Truth or Dare and hot tub make-out sessions, plus there may be racists in Alaska.

I haven’t watched Top Model in a while but this season has something going for it that the previous seasons didn’t. That’s right! One of the contestants is from Alaska! How often do we see Alaskan contestants on any reality show?! Oh, that’s right, there’s also a transgendered contestant. That’s a first too! Yeah, this should be an interesting season and with Isis, the born-man, now gorgeous woman, I might just have to check out the season premiere.

The CW posted their fall 2008 schedule and although you might not see Reaper on the line-up, rest assured that Sam and the devil will be back for midseason 2009. In the meantime, the CW will be premiering the highly anticipated 90210 spinoff this fall, as well as a couple of other new shows.

The CW has made some decisions about a number of their new and veteran series. Those of you who were hoping for another season of Smallville, Supernatural, One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl will be happy to learn that The CW has renewed all of these series for new seasons.

The Hollywood Reporter posted this news today, adding in that Everbody Hates Chris was also picked up for another season, as was America’s Next Top Model. Meanwhile, there’s been no word on the network’s freshman series, Reaper and Aliens in America. The Reporter speculates that in the case of Reaper, which is a comedy series (for the most part) that centers on a guy who’s trying to earn his soul back from the devil by capturing escaped souls from hell, The CW might be waiting to see how the ratings are when the series returns from the strike-hiatus on April 22nd. Things don’t look good for Aliens In America, which has already aired all 18 episodes.

New series Life is Wild and Online Nation have already received firm cancellations and The CW has also decided not to renew WWE SmackDown.
