Gamers paying out money to play online for the PS4 are going to be rewarded quite handsomely for October, including a huge title that rocked the gaming scene recently: Metal Gear Solid V.

According to the PlayStation Blog PS Plus subscribers can look forward to none other than Hideo Kojima's final game for Konami, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. You'll be able to get your hands on the title for free. It's the PlayStation 4 version of the game, so you're getting a high-quality experience.

The game was kind of cut short after five years and $80 million was invested into the game. The final chapter was only hinted at in behind-the-scenes bonus content. Perhaps one day gamers might able to mod in the final chapter? Anyway, the game took the Metal Gear Solid series to a whole new level, introducing open-world environments, vehicular gameplay, and a wide variety of different side-quests and options to expand and extend the gameplay well beyond the standard story route. It also helped slightly tie up a couple of the loose threads leading up to the events that kicked off in the original Metal Gear on the NES.

However, the goodies don't end there. The blog also reveals that you'll get two additional PlayStation 4 games in the form of the Amnesia Collection, which features both Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs.

Frictional Games' Amnesia titles really took gaming by storm, and the studio was one of the lead outlets to bring on the wave of first-person atmospheric horror games. The rise in popularity of games like Amnesia and Slender: The Arrival marked a new path in how gamers viewed the horror genre. Since then we've seen games like Outlast and Soma pop onto the scene and continue to move the genre in new directions, something even Capcom adopted with Resident Evil 7. Well, if you want to know what spurred on the new wave of first-person horror games, you'll be able to do so with the original Amnesia Collection.

Following up on those blockbuster PlayStation 4 titles, Sony also has revealed that PlayStation 3 owners will be able to enjoy the billiard room game Hustle Kings, featuring HD pool-playing for multiple players. If miscellaneous games aren't your thing, PS3 owners will also be able to look forward to playing Monster Jam Battlegrounds. Team6's title wasn't met with the most positive of feedback due to the fact that it's a monster truck version of Trials Evolution, but some gamers enjoyed the fact that it could be beaten within an hour. So if you want something short and simple to play, it doesn't seem like a bad game to install... and besides, it's free with your PlayStation Plus subscription.

The last two games that will be available are cross-buy games for the PS Vita and PS4. Hue and Sky Force Anniversary can be acquired for your PlayStation Vita, but you can also install Hue on your PlayStation 4 if you want, while Sky Force Anniversary can be installed on your PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4. So technically, you could say that you're getting five free games for the month of October on PlayStation Plus: Metal Gear Solid V and the two Amnesia games, along with Hue and Sky Force Anniversary.

All you have to do is log into your Steam account and click the “Install Game” button on the Steam store page.

You can head to the Steam store page and you'll see a brief notice on the game's buy button, which has been replaced with an “Install Game” button. The notice reads...

Amnesdia: The Dark Descent is completely free today! Offer ends Wednesday at 10AM Pacific.

And by “today” they mean September 15th.

It's very interesting because usually they have free weekends but not free game days. Could it be that some developers are stepping up their game and going the completely free route for their titles? It seems like it may not end well given that it would be a race to the bottom as a bunch of developers try to out-free each other for premium games. Then again, this could just be a one-off since Frictional Games is prepping for the release of their upcoming underwater horror game, SOMA.

In fact, they do make it known that Amnesia isn't the only game on sale from the indie studio's catalog. They mention in a tweet that the rest of their games on Steam are 80% off at the moment in celebration of SOMA's release coming very soon.

For people unfamiliar with Frictional Games' titles it's not a bad way to get introduced to them... for free.

In fact, after the tweet went out just two hours later they announced that more than 2,000 people had scurried off to Steam to grab a free digital copy of Amnesia. The announcement and subsequent stampede onto Valve's digital store actually caused Steam to slow down by a great deal. Heck, just getting to the Amnesia page required several refreshes due to all the of the traffic bogging down the service.

As for the game itself... Amnesia is a horror-adventure game where you explore a seemingly abandoned mansion. The game plays some serious mind games with players, as one of the core objectives is to stay out of the darkness by any means necessary. Getting bogged down in darkness causes the player character to become unhinged. This is coupled with the fact that there are monsters roaming the halls and it's necessary to run and hide to avoid being killed.

The game has a truly frightening atmosphere and you haven't played the game already you'll definitely want to check it out if you enjoy horror titles.

Personally Amnesia wasn't really my kind of game but SOMA looks like it's a nice improvement on Frictional Games' previous outings, including the sequel to Amnesia called A Machine For Pigs.

You can grab a free copy of Amnesia right now as you prep for the September 22nd release of SOMA.

If you're trying to celebrate Halloween without rocking some spine-tingling music, well, you're doing it wrong. Thankfully, gamers don't have to settle for Monster Mash when it comes to creepy holiday tunage. There are plenty of eerie game soundtracks out there and, starting next week, you can swipe a whole bunch of them for as little as $1.

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday. To get in the mood each year, I like to marathon horror flicks, play favorite survival/horror games like Silent Hill 2 and Fatal Frame and, in recent years, keep Pandora cranked to the Halloween station.

While there are plenty of scary movies, shows and video games, there's just isn't an embarrassment of ready-made Halloween music floating around out there. That is, of course, unless you count the awesome soundtracks to all of those games featuring hulking monstrosities, knife-wielding maniacs and all manor of creepy critters that go bump in the night.

Just in time for the holiday season, a Game Music Bundle will be going live next week, offering a ridiculously low starting price for more than a dozen horror games. Okay, some of these games aren't strictly “horror,” but they're all crammed with the right kind of atmosphere and, more importantly, music to set the soundtrack for anyone's Halloween festivities.

“Game Music Bundle is launching a monstrous bundle of terror-inducing game soundtracks that make an easy playlist for entertaining Halloween party-goers or scaring young trick-or-treaters,” reads a statement from the website.

It's called the “Game Music Bundle...Of the Damned,” and it offers up five initial soundtracks for as low as $1. Set to go live on Oct. 22, all you have to do is mosey on over to the official website, plop down your money and start enjoying your new music.

As is customary with these types of bundles, being willing to pay a little bit extra means you'll get even more music. While the starting tier is $1 for five soundtracks, paying up to $10 will get you the full crop of 14 available soundtracks. There are also additional perks for those who wish to pay a bit more.

“Top contributors, showcased on a leader board, will be awarded special physical items including video games, signed sheet music, and spooky care packages lovingly assembled by the Game Music Bundle team and promptly delivered by their diligent horde of goblins,” continues the press release.

As for what soundtracks are available in the bundle, here's the full list: Alice: Madness Returns, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Bloodrayne: Betrayal, Home, Dead Space, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Limbo, Survaillant, Organ Trail, The Horror at MS Aurora, Penumbra, Plants Vs. They've sent out the first screenshots and trailers for SOMA, a science fiction adventure in development for the PlayStation 4 and PC.

"The radio has gone silent on PATHOS-2," reads the plot summary on SOMA's new website. "As isolation bears down on the staff of the remote research facility, strange things are happening. Machines are taking on human traits and alien constructions have started to interfere with routine. The world around them is turning into a nightmare."

"The only way out is to do something unimaginable."

What we see of the plot in this gameplay trailer has the same Frankstein vibe as Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs The player character seems to be some sort of scientist engaging in less than orthodox practices. Here, we see the player putting some sort of metal cap on a corpse. This cap, along with a nearby machine, apparently reanimates the corpse.

The gameplay's a bit reminiscent of Amnesia as well. The player explores the environment and uses items they find in the environment to solve puzzles. At one point, the player hides to avoid a snake-like being. It seems that players will once again have to run and hide from enemies rather than fighting them.

Frictional Games says that SOMA isn't just a retread of their previous games, though.

"In all of our previous games, the setting and themes have been by-products," creative director Thomas Grip says on the PlayStation Blog. "We started with the core gameplay, then created high level aspects that fit with that. While a lot of good can come from this approach, it makes it very hard to approach tougher subjects."

"SOMA is meant to be a proper sci-fi game, and to get that right we couldn’t let the themes be an afterthought. My favorite works of sci-fi are the ones that use fantastic worlds to probe important issues in a way that down-to-earth settings just cannot. Great sci-fi authors like Asimov, Dick and Heinlein all do this. We want to give SOMA this quality as well."

Unfortunately, it's going to be awhile before we finally get our hands on this game. Frictional Games says the game won't be out until 2015.

Developer The Chinese Room announced a mid-September launch for the PC/Mac horror game this morning.

A Machine for Pigs is a collaboration between The Chinese Room and Dark Descent developers Frictional Games. The Chinese Room is perhaps best known for creating Dear Esther, an experimental game in which players explore a mysterious island. They also made a Half-Life 2 horror mod called Korsakovia.

While Machine for Pigs maintains the basic gameplay of Dark Descent, it has a new story and new cast of characters.

"The year is 1899. Wealthy industrialist Oswald Mandus awakes in his bed, wracked with fever and haunted by dreams of a dark and hellish engine," reads the official description of the game. "Tortured by visions of a disastrous expedition to Mexico, broken on the failing dreams of an industrial utopia, wracked with guilt and tropical disease, he wakes into a nightmare. The house is silent, the ground beneath him shaking at the will of some infernal machine: all he knows is that his children are in grave peril, and it is up to him to save them."

In Dark Descent, players explored a castle filled with puzzles and monsters. They had no weapons so they had to run and hide from any monsters they encountered. Their character's sanity would be reduced by brushes with the occult. If they ran out of sanity, they would fall unconscious for a period of time.

Machine for Pigs is said to change the formula a bit so that players of the first game won't be be bored. The sequel sports more expansive environments and revamped enemy A.I.. The inventory has been removed as well.

Chinese Room and Frictional Games' collaboration has been a long time coming. The game was initially scheduled for Fall 2012 but has been pushed back a few times.
Hey guess what everybody: You know that super evil thing that big publishers complain about but never release any grounded statistical data on and we're just supposed to assume that super evil thing really is super evil? Well, in plain terms, that super evil thing also known as piracy, is not as much of a sales impediment as some companies would lead you to believe. Frictional Games, the makers of Penumbra and Amnesia: The Dark Descent have been profiting greatly from their games, more-so now than when they originally released. The best part about it? They're profiting enough where piracy has become a non-factor.

I love indie success stories. I know that a lot of game companies fail and a lot of indies never get off the ground. No one ever said the gaming industry was a business where you could hop-skip and jump to success. However, in the case of Frictional Games they managed to overcome nearly going bankruptcy and have garnered steady sales thanks to word-of-mouth talk of their 2010 release Amnesia, which is now selling a steady 10,000 units per month.

According to the Official Frictional Games Blog...

That a game can still be going this good two years after is truly remarkable. This success is due to many factors, some of which are the uniqueness of the game (horror games without combat do not really exist on PC), the large modding community (more on this later) and the steady flood of YouTube clips (which is in turn is fueled by the modding community output). It has been over a year since we even thought about piracy. With sales as good as above we cannot really see this as an issue worth more than two lines in this post, so screw it.

Actually I should have used that last line for the headline: sensationalist but true.

The also go on to talk about how the game only cost them $360,000 to produce. They've made back that money and posted profits so that they no longer need investors or third-party financing. It's good news that this small team managed to make a game without a publisher, gain some notoriety and make enough to work on their next game, A Machine For Pigs.

I like how Frictional praises the community for helping keep Amnesia on the sales charts. The light modding capabilities and “Let's Play” sessions have really worked wonders for the game, and it just further proves that modding has always played a much bigger role in a game's success than many publishers would give the community and their own developers credit for.

Frictional's main focus now is on a new super-secret project that will incorporate a lot of what made Amnesia popular but will also explore much deeper themes. One thing that excites me is that the technology they're working on will play a big factor in how players will interact with the game. I'm curious to see how this will work.

You can read the entire post over on their Official Website.

Fractional Games, developer of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, is teasing a sequel to the 2011 horror game. They've released a new teaser site with a few hints to the game's content.

The site, simply called NextFrictionalGame.com, has a big Amnesia logo on top of a blurred out image. "Something is emerging..." reads the text below the image.

Clicking on the image brings you to a Google Maps view of China. Presumably this country will be the setting of the next Amnesia. Or maybe they meant "China, Maine" but forgot the write in the state.

RPS also spotted some details in the site's code. Here are the meta keywords for the page: "3D game, frictional games, advanced physics, survivial [sic] horror, action adventure, first person, horror, scary, HPL, work in progress, upcoming game, next frictional game, game development."

The meta description notes that they haven't decided on a final name for this new game. We'll call it Amnesia 2: 2 Dark 2 Descenty for the time being.

In Dark Descent, the player wakes up in a Prussian castle with no memory. He soon discovers he's being hunted by a dark presence that has taken over the castle. The castle is crawling with monsters and the player, armed with no weapons, must flee and hide from them. Looking at monsters or other disturbing things and venturing into dark places will lower the player's sanity level, causing their character to hallucinate or become less stealthy. Yep, it's pretty brutal.

Frictional Games released update 1.2 for their horror game Amnesia: The Dark Descent today. It adds, among other things, an add-on called "Justine."

In Amnesia, players control a young man who wakes up in a Prussian castle with no memory of how he got there. He can remember, though, that he's being hunted by something. The game doesn't give you weapons so you're forced to run and hide from the castle's monsters. Furthermore, spending time in the shadows and looking at monsters and other horrific things will slowly drain your character's sanity.

"Justine" is a new standalone level for the game. It was released through Steam as part of the "Potato Sack" Potato Sack promotion. This will be the first time that Steam abstainers will be able to try out the new content, though.

Update 1.2 also comes with a collection of short stories set in Amnesia's world. The stories were penned by the game's writer and illustrated by its concept artists. Frictional Games says the stories will "answer some of your questions about our universe, but also have you come up with a few new ones."

It wouldn't be a proper patch, though, without a few bug fixes thrown in. Update 1.2's got plenty of those. The full details can be found at Frictional's website.
