Robin Hood has been the subject of countless Hollywood movies over the years. That includes two starring Sean Connery and one from A24 starring Hugh Jackman, which released a few months ago. And then The Uprising came along. While the Paul Greengrass movie was originally marketed as a historical epic about the English Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, a couple of weeks ago, it began to be linked to Robin Hood too. Well, now that the movie is finally out we can talk about it, and CinemaBlend even got some insight from the film's team.

Is The Uprising A Robin Hood Movie?

As someone who had the opportunity to see The Uprising early, I was privy to key details prior to any chatter about it being a Robin Hood movie. The movie plays entirely like a historical epic about a few men who lead a revolt against King Richard II by marching into London and demanding change. Andrew Garfield plays a fictional character named Ploughman, who's a farmer who’s lost his family to the Black Death. The character finally decides he's had enough when a tax collector demands he pay the death taxes on his family once more after he did so years prior.

I admittedly didn’t know much about the history of the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. So I was surprised when King Richard led the peasants to believe that he would help them only to enlist the help of a secret army that kills most of them. It’s a harrowing story about war and what happens when the powerful are corrupted. By the end of the movie, Ploughman has lost so much of the hope he once had.

This brings the audience to the final scene of the film where Ploughman is depicted as a hooded figure who hunts down King Richard when he and his mother are traveling through their kingdom. I thought to myself “Oh, it’s like Robin Hood!” Yet the character’s name is never mentioned explicitly.

I found this to be a very intriguing way to address “why” Robin Hood exists rather than starting the story with him as an established vigilante as is often the case. And rather than this historical epic ending in sadness and fear, it concludes with Ploughman and some of the other survivors taking control of their land rather than bowing to the king.

On top of this, some marketing materials revealed that this might perhaps be inspired by Robin Hood. It's a complex situation, and it led CinemaBlend to seek out some answers.

What The Uprising’s Writer/Director Told Us

When CinemaBlend sat down with writer/director Paul Greengrass to talk about The Uprising, he confirmed its connection to Robin Hood. In his words:

There you have it! Honestly, at first glance, it may seem surprising that Greengrass would choose to link the story to the legend of Robin Hood. However, given the filmmaker's storytelling sensibilities, it does make sense. After all, he has a habit for crafting tales about unlikely protagonists as seen in films like Captain Phillips and The Lost Bus.

All in all, I wasn't sure what to make of The Uprising when I first spotted it on the 2026 movie schedule. However, I now feel it makes for an interesting and original take on a famous character. Quite honestly, though, I'd find it interesting even if it weren't linked to Robin Hood. Check out the movie for yourself, as it's playing in theaters now.

Andrew Garfield has been consistently private about his love life over the years. Most recently, the actor shared that it’s “not something [he] will ever talk about” publicly. But, the actor’s next movie on the 2026 release schedule happens to also star his reported girlfriend Monica Barbaro. And, Garfield just gushed about her talent in front of the camera .

Garfield spoke highly of Monica Barbaro to our sister site Who What Wear as he promotes his new film,The Uprising and he’s got Artificial alongside her coming up next. When Barbaro was asked about getting to work with her boyfriend earlier this year, she dodged the question.

Barbaro has been working as an actress for over a decade, but in the past few years she’s had some high profile roles. From Top Gun: Maverick to A Complete Unknown, the latter of which Garfield couldn’t help but gush about. In the Bob Dylan biopic, Barbaro played folk legend Joan Baez and was nominated by the Academy in the category of Best Supporting Actress in 2025.

Next, Garfield and Barbaro will share the screen for Artificial. The biopic is about Sam Altman, the co-founder of OpenAI during his controversial firing and rehiring in 2023. Barbaro will portray Mira Murati, the chief technology officer of OpenAI at the time of the movie. You can check out the trailer below:

Artificial comes from Luca Guadagnino, whom Garfield recently worked with on the drama After The Hunt. In the same interview, Garfield said he’s had “a lot of very healthy fear” around portraying the OpenAI CEO. The movie also stars Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Chris O’Dowd, Mark Rylance, Billie Lourd and Ike Barinholtz (who is portraying Elon Musk).

The upcoming biopic famously made headlines when Amazon MGM Studios dropped the film. Neon ultimately earned distribution rights and it’s set to come out in the middle of awards season, which could lead to more awards nods and appearances for Barbaro and Garfield.

For nearly two decades now, Jason Blum has been behind some of the biggest horror movies of the 21st century, like Get Out, Split and the Paranormal Activity series. However, what is it like to have Blumhouse Productions behind your non-horror movie? The Uprising’s writer/director told us.

The Uprising is a period drama that tells the story of England’s 1381 Peasants’ Revolt and has connections to Robin Hood. It’s not your typical Blumhouse movie, and yet the production company was very much behind the film. So, I had to ask if the project ever was more of a horror movie. Per Paul Greengrass:

Paul Greengrass and Jason Blum collaborated on another movie last year called The Lost Bus, which was a thriller based on real events. As The Uprising filmmaker shared, horror was never part of the conversation between them. And if you look deeply into Blumhouse’s list of films over the years, there have been random instances of it making other non-horror films.

Did you know Blumhouse was behind the family film Tooth Fairy starring Dwayne Johnson? Another good example is 2014’s Whiplash from Damien Chazelle. The company was also behind Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman and is producing Richard Linklater’s adaptation of the musical Merrily We Roll Along. Greengrass also said this about his vision for The Uprising:

The Uprising follows Andrew Garfield as a ploughman who’s lost his wife and kids to the Black Death and helps start a revolt against the crown. When Garfield’s character, who is literally named Ploughman, witnesses unfair tax collection in town, he calls out the unjust treatment of the townspeople. He ultimately leads a march into London to demand that Richard II, who’s just 14 years old, be made king.

The movie also stars Jamie Bell, Tom Hollander, Thomasin McKenzie and Katherine Waterston. It’s definitely not a horror movie, and more of a historical epic and action drama, but one could definitely see why Jason Blum might be interested in producing the project that’s outside his typical wheelhouse. The Uprising comes as Blumhouse has been having an unprecedented year in the realm of horror, particularly with Obsession and Backrooms’ back-to-back success earlier this year. It’s been 14 years since the release of The Amazing Spider-Man, and Andrew Garfield’s career is still thriving. However, before he was cast as Peter Parker in his Spider-Man movies, his dream was to play the webslinger. So, after he did it, did he ever think about quitting acting? Well, he got candid about his outlook on his career and life after he played the iconic Marvel hero.

Now, this topic came up because Garfield was asked what his dream was 15 years ago by Variety. At that time, he was in the midst of making his first Spider-Man movie. And it was a childhood dream come true, as the Oscar nominee explained:

Andrew Garfield once told us that he’d dreamed of playing Spider-Man since he was 4 years old. So, obviously, being cast as Peter Parker was a very big achievement for him.

The Amazing Spider-Man came around about a decade into Garfield’s career. It was made right on the heels of The Social Network (which he should have gotten an Oscar nomination for), and these movies helped define his early career.

Now, it’s been over a decade since his Spider-Man movies were released, and five years since his cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He’s filled those years with other great projects (like Tick, Tick…Boom! and Hacksaw Ridge, for example) that have helped shape him into the actor he is today. But has he ever thought about leaving the craft behind? According to him, he thinks about it often:

Well, thinking about doing something and actually doing it are two very different things. While Garfield says he’s thought about stopping, he really isn’t slowing down. In fact, he has three releases on the 2026 movie schedule – The Magic Faraway Tree, which is already out, The Uprising, which premieres on September 11, and Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial, which will premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 5.

So, his Spider-Man years may be behind him, and his priorities may have changed; however, he’s still acting.

While I expect we’ll continue to see Garfield on our screens for years to come, I do wonder how his outlook on life will impact the projects he picks. He said these days he’s more focused on a “certain quality of life” and his relationship with his friends and family. I love that for him, and I cannot wait to see how it impacts his work.

However, the famous actor has said before that he prefers to keep his personal life private. Nevertheless, when someone finally asked Garfield about what’s going on in his love life, he gave a discreet answer “on record”.

Being a celebrity can be tough when so much of your personal life is exposed to the public. A well-known star like Andrew Garfield can prefer a less-is-more approach when asked about his life outside of his career. However, Esquire asked the now-43-year-old British actor how things were going with his love life, and he shared this candid response:

Garfield does make a great point. It’s up to him how much of his personal life he wants to share. Maybe he’ll spill the tea, or maybe he won’t. But, ultimately, that’ll be his choice.

The media has never strayed away from trying to find out who Andrew Garfield’s real-life leading lady is. Years ago, there was a lot of buzz around the fact that the L.A-born actor dated his real-life co-star, Emma Stone, whom he met while filming The Amazing Spider-Man, until 2015. Later, Garfield also went out with model Alyssa Miller for a few months until rumors emerged in 2022 that the pair reportedly broke up due to “work schedules” and “differences.”

The rumor mill didn’t stop there, as Garfield was later linked to other ladies, like Phoebe Dynevor, Rita Ora and Dr. Kate Thomas. Nevertheless, throughout each piece of gossip, the Social Network star has opted not to humor any of the narratives. More recently, Garfield has reportedly been dating Top Gun: Maverick’s Monica Barbaro. (That fact is even mentioned in GQ's profile.) Garfield and Barbaro attended an Oscars after-party earlier this year and have since been spotted on other occasions as well.

Barbaro and Garfield are starring in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming movie, Artificial, believe it or not. Interestingly, Barbaro dodged a question regarding what it was like working with Garfield, saying she loved working with the whole cast. So, at first glance, it appears the One Night Only actress also wants to keep her love life private as well.

Still, as the two continue to work, it's hard to deny that they're an appealing couple. They were definitely couple goals when they appeared at this year’s Wimbledon Champions hand-in-hand. While nothing has been confirmed or denied about Garfield and Barbaro’s relationship status, I'm happy for now to let their actions speak for themselves.

There could, of course, come a time when Andrew Garfield chooses to speak more opening about romance in his life. However, I can also respect that Garfield wants to try his best to let his love life be his own business and not feel obligated to give those who ask a play-by-play. Clearly, being vague is the best way for him to ensure something so personal remains sacred.

Everything you think you know about Andrew Garfield’s new movie could be wrong. Or could be right. Originally titled The Uprising: The Rise of Robin Hood, the historical drama has officially dropped the ‘Robin Hood’ of it all. This comes after Focus Features released a poster promoting the film as origins for the legendary hero. But things get even more confusing from there for the Paul Greengrass film, and honestly, I’m still trying to wrap my head around whether Garfield’s new movie is actually about Robin Hood.

The upcoming 2026 movie is tackling the Peasants’ Revolt in England in 1381 and, I'll admit, the trailer has a Robin Hood feel to it. However, according to the UK distributor, the movie is NOT about the man who steals from the rich. In fact, they allegedly released a statement outright denying it (via World of Reel). Check it out:

The movie industry has been trying to find a great Robin Hood story for decades. We currently have the MGM series Robin Hood with Jack Patten as the titular hero, which was renewed for a Season 2. Recent cast announcements include fan-favorite Once Upon a Time star Colin O'Donoghue as Prince Richard.

We also just saw Hugh Jackman’s polarizing Death of Robin Hood over the summer. If it’s not obvious by the title, the Michael Sarnoski movie is a grimmer take on the story than we usually see. Although by the look of the trailer, The Uprising has potential to be another sad Garfield movie. Perhaps those two projects are why the UK distributor wants to shift away from the ‘Robin Hood’ marketing? However, this seems to conflict with the US press release for the film, which reads:

Confused yet? I am. By the premise and the trailer, it certainly SOUNDS like a "Robin Hood" movie. And the “army of the people” sure seems like a ‘band of merry men.’ Not to mention, Garfield’s playing a character simply called “the Ploughman,” which could turn out to be a Robin Hood figure. So the marketing could be attempting to walk back a spoiler.

Or it’s also possible this whole thing was to get attention for the movie, since the title change came just two weeks before it hits theaters on September 11. This release falls slightly after the US release of Garfield's The Magic Faraway Tree, which serves a genre pivot for the actor into a family-friendly fantasy that was definitely not about Robin Hood.

Though if The Uprising is about the bow-wielding hero, I’m still not sure. We'll have to wait and see if we get an answer when the movie hits theaters.

There are actors that I like seeing on screen, and then there are those that it feels like I would follow into endless stories with. Andrew Garfield has long been the latter for me. I got into his career through Spider-Man at a time when I was really starting to follow actors on my own for the first time and find my taste in films outside of my household. I think he’s one of the best we have, with more on the way in the 2026 movie schedule too, but can we talk about how devastating his films are?

It’s been about fifteen years now that I’ve been following Garfield’s career, and I thought it then, and I thought it now: the guy loves a tragic premise. And hey, I get it, and I have all the respect for him and his career thus far, but my goodness! This is less so me complaining, and more so realizing this through the progression of his career.

The Amount Of Andrew Garfield Sad Movie Moments Is Wild

I think the first movie I ever watched of Andrew Garfield’s was probably The Social Network. I mean, come on, that “fuck you flip flips” scene! Iconic. That scene could have been played in a hundred different ways, but there’s something about Garfield being on the verge of tears while he confronts his former friend, Mark Zuckerberg, and the betrayal he feels towards him. I think he really brought through the emotion of that movie and anchored it beautifully.

Then, there’s his take as Spider-Man. It's kind of a sad story in of itself because there were a lot of unresolved things before his version of Spidey was replaced with Tom Holland. There’s also the way it ended. His high school sweetheart literally dies in his arms because he couldn’t save her, and that’s straight up how the movie ends. An 18-year-old kid who feels responsible for his girlfriend’s death. I mean… just thinking about it makes me want to sob.

My favorite Garfield movie is probably Tick, Tick… Boom! It’s a musical about the life of Jonathan Larson, the playwright behind Rent. The movie is ridden with a lot of emotions, and ultimately quite hopeful, but it is about someone who died at the age of 35. Another one that really crept up on me, though, was We Live In Time. I thought it might be Garfield’s first rom-com, but it ended up being one of the saddest love stories I’ve ever watched. I adored it to absolute pieces, but by now I’ve been expecting tragedy out of Garfield movies.

How The Trend Has Changed Recently

In recent years, there has been a change of the tide. There was something healing about seeing Tobey Maguire and Garfield show up in No Way Home and crack jokes about being Spider-Man. The moment when he saved MJ in a way he didn’t get to do for Gwen Stacy?! It made me so happy his version of the character got to have that.

That brings me to his latest film, The Magic Faraway Tree, which is a pivot for the actor into a family-friendly fantasy film. It was kind of a breath of fresh air for a longtime fan of his like me because I watched as he still brought his depth to a role that’s purely fantastical and devoid of tragedy. Though I did find myself thinking for a moment if the movie was going to end sadly, I think due to his past projects.

Now, part of why I love Andrew Garfield as an actor is he’s not afraid of deep emotion and sadness. I don’t want to see that change suddenly. But whoa, what a run so far. I can’t wait to see what he does next – whether that be a round of tear-jerkers or a sudden pivot into an action comedy or something.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man franchise couldn’t be in a better place these days. Its latest movie, Brand New Day, has become the highest-grossing 2026 movie release in the world, and fans love it, too! But, there was a time when Sony was having Spidey troubles, and sadly Shailene Woodley’s cut role as Mary Jane Watson was a casualty. The actress just talked about what happened exactly with her Amazing Spider-Man past.

If you were following along with The Amazing Spider-Man movies back in the early 2010s, you probably know Woodley was cast as Mary Jane Watson. She was even seen on the set of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (red hair and all) filming a scene with Andrew Garfield. But, it never made it to the big screen. Here’s how things went down, per Woodley:

Whoa, three scenes! That’s rather sizable. Woodley reflected on the Spider-Man role that got away during a career retrospective with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. As she added:

Woodley was 21 years old at the time, and had recently had awards buzz for her role in The Descendants with George Clooney. The movie earned her a meeting with The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb, which led to her booking the role of MJ. However, ultimately, it was apparently decided that they wouldn’t introduce Peter Parker’s new love interest so soon after Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy dies in TASM2 until the planned third movie.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 left a lot of unresolved things, which never had the chance to be explored. Sony scrapped The Amazing Spider-Man 3 back in February 2015. A few months later, Tom Holland was cast as Spider-Man and the character joined the MCU. Woodley also said this about her cut role:

Based on what we know about the fall of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man and the rise of Tom Holland’s version had very little to do with the actors part of them. At the time, Sony initially hoped to launch an expanded universe to compete with the MCU that involved Spider-Man spinoff films. After TASM2 wasn’t well received, it instead led to a deal between Sony and Marvel Studios.

Ultimately, Andrew Garfield had the chance to return to the role of Spider-Man for 2021’s No Way Home alongside Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland. As for Shailene Woodley, Mary Jane Watson role, we’ll always wonder what that could have been like. Where’s the justice for her?

Many of Andrew Garfield's best movies have been acclaimed Award Season choices, in addition to his tenure starring in the Spider-Man movies (which are streaming with a Disney+ subscription). He recently pivoted over to more family-friendly content with Ben Gregor's The Magic Faraway Tree, and the actor spoke to CinemaBlend about why he wanted to get involved in the book-to-screen adaptation.

The Magic Faraway Tree was a hit movie in the U.K., and now it's finally traveling across the pond and hitting theaters in the States. Garfield plays father Tim Thompson, who moves his family to the country, where his kids meet magical creatures in the forest near their home. I had the chance to speak with the cast a few weeks ago, when the Oscar-nominated actor revealed how his own childhood inspired his involvement in the family comedy. In Garfield's words:

The importance of play and separation from screens is a big idea in The Magic Faraway Tree, so it makes sense that it would inspire Garfield to join the project. Early in the movie, Tim and his wife Polly (Claire Foy) realize that their kids are addicted to screens, and decide to make a change. What results is their three children playing together and having magical adventures in the woods near their home.

The Social Network star went on to share how his own childhood mirrored this, thanks to being in a rural area with access to a forest. Garfield shared with me:

It certainly sounds like the Tony-winning actor can relate to how the Thompson kids are able to connect with nature and their imagination in The Magic Faraway Tree. So while Andrew Garfield has started to play parents on the big screen, it's clear his inner child is very much still in his work.

The 42-year-old actor went on to share another beloved part of his childhood: putting on made-up plays as a young person. In his words:

The Magic Faraway Tree will hit theaters in the States on August 21st as part of the 2026 movie release list. Of course, there are plenty of fans who are hoping Garfield once again reprises his role as Spider-Man in one of the next two Avengers movies. Hey, at least he's still trying new genres.

First a viral sexy glasses moment, and now everyone is talking about Andrew Garfield’s hair. And I can’t say I blame them. Yet it hasn’t seem to come up during press tours. Most of the time the actor is fielding questions about Spider-Man. Until now. Someone finally asked Garfield about him growing out his long, luscious locks and I can’t get enough of his answer.

Garfield and Claire Foy joined Entertainment Tonight to chat about their upcoming movie The Magic Faraway Tree when the conversation took a turn to his hair. And Foy, speaking for all of us, needed to know what his “updo of choice” is. But I never expected the answer to involve Tom Cruise. As he put it:

Sadly, we won’t be getting to see Garfield sporting the Cruise look. The actor was quick to dismiss that notion, stating the lock as “only been in private.” Furthermore, he even said he’s “gotten a lot of flack for it." Although this makes me even more curious to see this look.

Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing the style in Ben Gregor's The Magic Faraway Tree. By the looks of the trailer, we’ll be seeing a more typical Garfield hair-style. The movie will be released in the U.S. as part of 2026’s summer releases, hitting the box office on August 21. Garfield and Foy play the parents of three children, who move to the countryside only to discover a realm that takes them to magical worlds.

Despite the lack of his epic locks, I’m definitely on board to explore some magical worlds and meet some quirky characters. But while dishing on the movie, Garfield answered the question we’re all thinking: Is he planning to keep the hair long term? His answer:

Good news for anyone loving his new look. Fans can also check out Garfield and his hair in Paul Greengrass’s The Uprising coming out in September. This is perfect for those who enjoy a good period drama. Garfield plays a leader of a rebellion fighting against King Richard II’s tyranny. This will be a different role from his time as a villain in Luca Guadagnino’s The Hunt.

Though he will be reuniting with Guadagnino for a comedy-drama about AI, called Artificial, which finds him taking on the role of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. However, Marvel fans are still crossing their fingers to get him to return in an upcoming Avengers movie. But honestly, I’m most curious to see him in the limited TV series, Wild Things, where he will play Roy Horn. That’s right, as in Siegfried and Roy. He’ll be starring alongside Jude Law (as Siegfried) and the series will be available with an Apple TV subscription when it comes out.

Here’s hoping that in one of these projects we’ll see more of Garfield’s luscious locks!

Spider-Man: Homecoming brought Tom Holland and Zendaya together. Then, after rumors surfaced that the two co-stars were dating in 2017, everything came full circle in 2021 when the pair were caught kissing in a car. Now that it’s been confirmed Holland and Zendaya are married, Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal revealed how “MJ and Peter just always fall in love” in real life, and I can’t unsee it.

When Tom Holland and Zendaya were first cast as Peter Parker and MJ, former Chairwoman of the Motion Pictures Group of Sony Pictures Entertainment Amy Pascal tried to warn the co-stars off dating in fear it would make things complicated. As we know, of course, that advice was ignored. Now, in a recent interview with the BBC, Pascal got real about that warning again before making a point about all the actors who have played Spider-Man and his love interest:

Wow, the producer makes a great point! It’s true, there’s no denying that actors who portray Peter Parker and MJ do have a habit of falling in love when the cameras are on and off. (Or in Andrew Garfield's case, he fell for Emma Stone, who played Gwen Stacy.)

With such chemistry between Spider-Man and the woman he loves, it’s very understandable why the co-stars portraying these characters would feel the love in real life too. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, as well as Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, were co-stars who dated in real life after playing their respective Spidey couples. However, Amy Pascal felt that Tom Holland and Zendaya shouldn’t fall under that familiar spell, seeing as the aforementioned Spider-Man pairings did eventually break up.

Fortunately, Holland and Zendaya are breaking the Spider-Man couple curse by still going strong. And while they're a fairly private couple, the British actor previously said he finds his relationship with his MJ “sacred” and that the only way to be a truly healthy couple is to keep their romance to themselves.

The former Disney Channel star also said she’s a big believer in “protecting things that are special.” By not allowing the press to interfere in their relationship, it’s no wonder they're still going so strong.

Now that I’m aware that “Peter and MJ just always fall in love,” I can’t look at these Spider-Man couples the same way again. While things didn’t work out between the previous Spidey pairings, Tom Holland and Zendaya continue to be couples’ goals with each movie they co-star in and every public appearance they make. Now, we just need the husband and wife to be in a rom-com together to make our dreams come true.

Well, while Holland and Zendaya are doing great in real life, their Peter and MJ are going through it in the 2026 movie release, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, the love is still very much there, and the couple's chemistry both in real life and on screen is palpable.

The ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker return to his universe, and since then, there have been rumors regarding whether he'll reprise the role. However, Garfield doesn't appear in the new Marvel movie, Brand New Day, which centers solely on Tom Holland’s Peter wall-crawler. Despite that, it seems Garfield is still getting anxious whenever he's faced with Spidey-related questions, based on some recent chats he's had. And, quite frankly, I can't get enough of this!

Since No Way Home, Garfield has delivered incredible performances in movies like We Live in Time and After the Hunt. Nevertheless, it seems the Oscar nominee just can't escape Spider-Man queries while promoting his new projects. Recently, he's been doing press for one of his 2026 movie releases, The Magic Faraway Tree and, as seen on Screen Rant’s TikTok, Garfield got humorously frazzled when asked about Brand New Day’s post-credits scene:

• Interviewer: Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes out this week.
• Andrew: I’m not in it!
• Interviewer: The end-credits scene hints at the return of an off world Spider-Man.
• Andrew: Oh, really?
• Interviewer: It does.
• Andrew: Cool!
• Interviewer: Do you know anything about that?
• Andrew: I do not. First I’ve heard of it.
• Interviewer: Not the werewolf.
• Andrew: Not the werewolf. Not me.
• Interviewer: So if it’s not you, it must be Tobey.
• Andrew: I guess so. Could be. Who knows? Or maybe Miles Morales. I don’t know.

I love that The Social Network actor isn’t even in the movie, and he’s still being hounded by Spider-Man questions. Of course, I can sense some nervousness in Garfield when he's given these kinds of queries questions, and I feel for him. However, it's also hard not to watch the video below and chuckle:

Even when the first Brand New Day trailer came out, Garfield was asked about the “insane” fan theory of whether or not he was digitally erased from the preview. Garfield responded by saying that was an “absolutely ludicrous” conspiracy theory. Evidently, he wasn't playing "werewolf" this time. (If you know, you know.)

Audiences had such positive reactions seeing Garfield and Tobey Maguire's surprising return for No Way Home, and I think it’s safe to a portion of fans would love to see them reprise their roles. Despite that not happening in Brand New Day, Garfield had to convince Craig Melvin of that while promoting The Magic Faraway Tree again and his upcoming biopic, Artificial, on The Today Show:

Given that the Golden Globe winner was constantly denying that he’d be in No Way Home, which ended up being untrue, you can’t blame journalists for finding it hard to take the actor’s sentiments on a return to Spider-Man. The Silence actor is well aware that because he's played Spider-Man in three movies, there's bound to be continued interest. Garfield previously said he believed he’d get Spider-Man questions “until I’m 90 years old.” If that ends up being true, it'll prove how strong of an MCU fan following he has.

Garfield also got real about having to answer fewer spidey questions so he could focus on promoting his more recent projects. That's totally fair as well, considering that in the grand scheme of things, those Marvel-based movies only make up a small portion of Garfield's vast body of work.

Still, Andrew Garfield will most likely continue to be hit with Spider-Man questions, and I’ll always love watching him anxiously answer. And, if the Critics’ Choice Award winner will be web-slinging in future MCU movies, I’d rather it be a surprise in order for his return to be all the more satisfying. However, it seems that by the time we get to Brand New Day, Parker will be “actively ignoring” some sage wisdom shared by Garfield’s Peter.

Even now, it’s hard to forget the sight of the three Peters swinging into action together, but it’s the more intimate moments between them that are truly memorable. There’s a lot of humor that comes as a result of the three Spideys chopping it up, and the older Peters also relate their own experiences to Holland’s Parker. Ahead of Brand New Day, Holland spoke at the film’s press conference – which CinemaBlend attended – and explained that his character’s dour circumstances cause him to neglect a key principle:

Garfield’s “amazing” Spider-Man (or Peter 3) did indeed tell Holland’s Parker not to be afraid to ask for help when needed. Well, based on the trailers for Brand New Day, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s wall-crawler has pretty much put the weight of the world on his own shoulders. For years, mental health has long been synonymous with Spidey, and that seems to be in full swing – no pun intended – in Destin Daniel Cretton’s new film. Holland also explained the difference between Peter’s situation and his alter ego’s:

Such a situation parallels “what young people are going through on a daily basis.” Those youngsters may not have spider-based powers and have other costumed vigilantes as mentors, but the sentiment still rings true. As for Brand New Day, Peter may not be heeding advice from his counterparts, but Holland certainly hasn’t forgotten them. The actor wanted Parker’s new costume to pay homage to Garfield and Maguire’s Spider-Men by taking elements of both of their suits.

Peter’s fresh duds won’t exactly hide his depression, of course, and it seems he’s going to have some internal struggles in his latest film. I’m curious to see how he wrestles with those inner demons while dealing with New York’s nastiest criminals. Let’s hope he does manage to eventually heed the advice from Andrew Garfield’s version of the friendly neighborhood hero.

And it explains why we'll be seeing a more traditional suit worn by Holland's hero when he hits theaters this summer.

During a recent Q&A, Mark Ruffalo let something slip that immediately got people talking. A video shared online and picked up by SuperHeroHype shows the Hulk actor casually mentioning that Spider-Man will be facing a very specific kind of threat. And yeah, he says it pretty clearly:

That one line has completely taken on a life of its own across social media, with insiders and online scoopers suggesting Ruffalo might not have been talking about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man at all. A lot of the speculation centers on Venom being that “alien,” with Garfield potentially squaring off against him. And honestly, it’s not coming out of nowhere. Spider-Man: No Way Home already proved Marvel is more than willing to bring legacy characters back into the mix. Garfield’s return didn’t feel like a one-off cameo; it felt like a reintroduction, with the door very much left open for more.

Fans are also zeroing in on one specific moment from that film. When Tobey Maguire and Holland’s Spider-Men talk about fighting aliens, Garfield’s Peter casually admits he hasn’t had that experience yet. Of course, there’s another, much simpler explanation here. Ruffalo could’ve been talking about literally any Spider-Man story involving aliens. The MCU isn’t exactly short on extraterrestrial threats. Between existing setups and future projects, there are plenty of directions for comment to go without bringing Garfield or Venom back into the picture.

But hey, speculating and coming up with fan theories is half the fun, right? It’s also worth noting that Mark Ruffalo is confirmed to appear in the upcoming Spider-Man flick, with the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day featuring both Punisher and Banner. That gives his comment a much more immediate context, one that doesn’t necessarily point to a multiverse-level reveal. For all we know, there’s just an alien in the next Spidey movie, and it’s Tom Holland facing off against it. I guess we will just have to wait until the movie hits the 2026 movie schedule on July 31 for at least half of the puzzle to be answered.

There’s nothing new about comic book movie fans dissecting every frame of a trailer for a new superhero movie. I mean, at this point, Marvel has practically conditioned us all into looking for clues and easter eggs, case in point, the entire marketing run of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Now, folks are at it again with the narrative-refreshing sequel Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Andrew Garfield’s reaction to one “insane” trailer theory has to be seen to be enjoyed in full.

Who could forget the No Way Home trailer’s already iconic moment when Sandman, Electro, and Lizard hurled themselves at Spider-Man in a scene ripped from a comic splash page? Eagle-eyed fans instantly spotted odd negative space in the scene, sparking (correct) fan speculation that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were returning. Now, Brand New Day’s marketing faces similar scrutiny, and a hilarious clip of an interview Garfield gave to Capital FM (see below) is making the rounds and is a must-watch.

In the clip above, the host shows Garfield a frame from the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer featuring the Web-Head facing assassin ninjas known as the Hand. As with No Way Home, there’s notable negative space at the bottom. The host asks him, “There’s room for more characters… Do you have anything to comment on the matter? Are you back in this film?”

The We Live In Time lead, smiling throughout, pushes back at the complete desperation of the “conspiracy.” He responds:

Not ready to let this line of inquiry go, the interviewer points to the space below the wall crawler where they’ve circled in red potential characters erased from the image. Still, Garfield isn’t having it, continuing:

Obviously, the interviewer, like many interviewers before them, is quite frustrated with the Tick, Tick Boom! Star’s “I’m not the werewolf” energy. And for good reason, as it's pretty clear the actor is playing with all of our expectations. He follows up his denial with:

Alright, Andrew, you got us. I’m joking, of course. It’s obvious the Social Network actor enjoys teasing fans. Still, his attitude is very different now from how he acted before No Way Home’s release. Back then, he repeatedly denied being in the movie, which turned out to be untrue. This time, he seems to be having fun and keeping everyone guessing. Is this another trick, or does his lack of denial mean he’s really not in it? Maybe Garfield is playing 4D chess, or maybe this theory really is “insane,” levels of wild speculation.

Is Andrew Garfield in the upcoming Marvel movie? Have characters been erased from the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer? Who knows. But luckily for us, we do not have long to wait as the movie swings onto the 2026 movie schedule soon enough. All will be revealed when the film hits theaters on July 31, 2026.

They’re gonna make him do this ’til he’s 90.” I don’t think Garfield will still be donning the skintight red and blue suit until then, but then again, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are still playing Professor X and Magneto well into their 80s, so I guess anything is possible.

Now you may think this means Andrew Garfield is tired of the Spider-Man questions nearly 15 years after he debuted as the character, but far from it. He also had this to say on the subject:

So the mystery remains about whether or not Andrew Garfield will ever play Spider-Man for a fourth time, but he’s certainly prepared to continue being asked about this portion of his career if he lives to be a nonagenarian. Last week, Garfield also talked about the part of No Way Home’s improvised three Spideys sequence that surprised him, as well as confirmed he has seen the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer (albeit without audio). Though there’s been no indication his version of Spider-Man will appear in either Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which will bring the MCU’s Multiverse Saga to a close, there is a rumor claiming that Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man will fight Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in the former movie.

Andrew Garfield’s Peter was the first of the older two Peter Parkers to be roped into the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Ned accidentally conjuring a portal to his location when he was trying to find his own Peter. Tobey Maguire’s Peter arrived shortly thereafter, with both of them having been pulled into the main MCU reality by the effects of Doctor Strange’s botched spells, just like the aforementioned villains, plus Doctor Octopus. So naturally their primary objective was to make their way back home with these villains in tow, but it was great they got a little time to just shoot the breeze before having to clock in more superhero time.

Then Andrew Garfield highlighted the part during this sequence when Peter 2 called Peter 3 “amazing,” a fun nod to the Amazing Spider-Man film series, along with arguably the most well-known adjective to describe Marvel Comics’ Wall-Crawler. Thankfully, all three Spider-Men made it out of Spider-Man: No Way Home in one piece, but whether we’ll ever see the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield incarnations again officially remains a mystery. Well, that's certainly one way to catch up with the forthcoming blockbuster's latest news. The Oscar-nominated Tick, Tick... BOOM! actor did catch the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day... but he did it on mute as to not disturb his coworkers. He presumably watched it with subtitles, which means he still got to see thrilling updates such as the appearances of both Jon Bernthal's Punisher and Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner. Still, I'd assume it would be even more epic with the trailer's sound.

Of course, there are some fans who likely still think that the Social Network actor has a role in the forthcoming Marvel flick. Andrew Garfield lied for a year about his Spider-Man: No Way Home role, which saw him finally suiting back up as the web slinger. Although it does look like Brand New Day isn't a multiversal story, and will instead focusing on various characters in New York City. Then again, the movie's trailer is still likely guarding a number of big secrets.

It remains to be seen if Garfield ends up playing Spider-Man again, either in Brand New Day or either of the next two Avengers movies. But now that he's reprised that role, the chatter will likely continue for the foreseeable future.

And after finally watching Luca Guadagnino's latest movie, I really need to see more of the actor in villainous roles.

Garfield is known for his time in the Spider-Man movies, so he's pretty synonymous with playing a hero. That's why I was so taken with what he brought to the table with After the Hunt, which is one of the best parts of the movie IMO. I'm just hoping this is the beginning of the actor's villain era.

I Hope After The Hunt Is The Start Of Garfield's Villain Era

While fans are hoping that Garfield once again suits up as Spider-Man in upcoming Marvel movies, I'm still not over what he brought to the table as Hank Gibson in After the Hunt. In the movie, he's a philosophy professor at Yale University who is accused of sexually assaulting a PhD student. He's the primary antagonist of the project, with Garfield bringing a ton of emotionality to the character as his life begins to spiral out of control.

Throughout the movie's 139-minute runtime, Hank refuses to take any responsibility for what happened between him and Ayo Edebiri's Maggie. And after letting himself into Alma's vacation home (without permission), the two have a tense conversation about their own relationship. He tries to initiate sex with her, despite being told no multiple times. It's the final straw for Hank, and shows how little he cares about actual consent.

This was a big departure for Andrew Garfield, who is known for his delightful personality and years fighting crime as Peter Parker. I loved to hate Hank during After the Hunt, which is why I'm hoping to see the 42-year-old actor get to play more villainous roles in the future. It would be especially interesting to see this dynamic in genre work, highlighting the change from his time saving people's lives in the Amazing Spider-Man movies.

Garfield is great at being a hero, including his Tony-winning performance as Prior Walter in Angels in America. But he's a versatile talent, and villainy looked good on him. Bring on the antagonists!

Of course, this isn't the common sentiment about the future of Garfield's career. After the three Peter Parkers united in No Way Home, fans have been hoping that he'll return as Spider-Man once again. We'll just have to wait and see if that or another villain role happens first.

If you’re a fan of Guillermo del Toro like I am, you know how magnificent it was when news was announced that the Oscar-winning filmmaker was making his own adaptation of Frankenstein – which he has been talking about making for nearly twenty years. The director has always had a really tender approach to portraying monsters in movies, from Pan’s Labyrinth to The Shape of Water. Despite my massive excitement for the movie, there was one change made during production that had me less interested. Now that I’ve seen the movie – coming to those with a Netflix subscription on November 7, I need to talk about it.

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein officially became part of upcoming horror movies when it was picked up by Netflix in 2023. But, right before production started in early 2024, it was announced that Andrew Garfield had dropped out of the movie due to “scheduling conflicts,” and Jacob Elordi would be taking over. I want to talk about that change, and my thoughts on it after experiencing the film itself.

No Shade To Jacob Elordi, I Just Really Wanted To See Andrew Garfield In Frankenstein When He Was Cast

Now, it’s not like I think Jacob Elordi isn’t talented. I found him to be especially haunting in Euphoria, and was impressed by his performance as Elvis Presley in Priscilla. But, Andrew Garfield is one of my favorite actors of all time. I remember seeing him in The Amazing Spider-Man, and feeling like he brought so much depth to Peter Parker, and following many of his performances since – with one of my other highlights from his career being in 2021’s Tick, Tick… Boom!

But, the actor has never really done a horror-leaning genre film. The idea of him playing The Creature in Frankenstein (which is one of my top books ever) and being directed by the master of horror and fantasy, and one of the filmmakers I most respect working today just made me feel like I was living in a simulation in the best way, and I know I wasn’t the only one. It felt like it could be a really special role for the actor, and when he was replaced, I was disappointed.

Now That I've Seen Frankenstein, I Wouldn't Want Anyone Else In The Role

I decided to see Frankenstein in theaters earlier this week, despite the difficulty I found just to find a showing, and I can honestly say, it’s going to be one of my top movies of the year. The movie itself took me back to reading the novel for the first time in high school, and falling in love with Mary Shelley’s gothic classic that has a lot to say about the nature of humanity through its often horrific plotline.

One of the pivotal reasons why I loved Frankenstein is because of Elordi specifically. The actor’s specific stature of 6 '5, and his innocent yet chiseled features is exactly the kind of creature that I never knew I wanted to see, but instantly clicked for me as the perfect casting choice for del Toro’s movie. Elordi, who has been called “hot Frankenstein,” brings some really beautiful emotion and gentleness to the role of the creature, while also having moments where I completely feared him and what he might do. By the end of the movie, I was nearly in tears having gone through the journey, and so much has to do with Elordi’s performance.

If you were disappointed like me about the recasting, I implore you to move that aside, and check out Frankenstein – coming to Netflix on November 7. Now, I actually think Elordi was the better choice than Garfield, even though I will always wonder how the actor would have played the role.

He undoubtedly aims to do that again with After the Hunt as it hits the 2025 movie calendar. Whether or not that includes Garfield's Peter Parker remains to be seen.

The end of No Way Home saw them return to their universes, presumably with the memories of meeting Tom Holland's character. They might be the only people who remember that Peter Parker, following Doctor Strange's spell. We'll just have to see if/when we get to see the Tick, Tick... BOOM! actor suited back up.

In fact, the director of her latest film, Luca Guadagnino, recently opened up about how she baked banana bread for him and their movie’s production designer, which had airline staff “starstruck” because it was so “beautiful.” Unfortunately, an Entertainment Tonight reporter who tried to get the scoop on the Pretty Woman lead’s secret recipe just got stopped in their tracks by Andrew Garfield. Thankfully, he had them in tow, as he said:

I’m starting to feel the wave Garfield was riding in that ninety seconds or so. It’s one thing to be amped up ahead of the moment, but a full other when you stay in that type of energy. Which, again, is wildly understandable with how big of a night it was to celebrate even bigger celebs. (But it does make sense why Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro became couple goals over the summer in matching white Wimbledon outfits.)

Once he secured the glasses on his face, things didn’t improve all that much. He then realized not only was his shirt overly unbuttoned for his comfort, it wouldn’t stay put after attempting to adjust it properly. The failure, in turn elicited a facial expression and resulted in reminding himself to stay calm:

Yikes. What a series of unfortunate events, but at least none of it read that way to the unsuspecting viewer. It only elicited more love for one of the most recent internet movie star boyfriends. And maybe enticed the fans to imagine more hyper specific tech involved thirst tweets. Fans may have thirsted over the moment, but honestly there's more NSFW content on Paramount+ out there.

Finally, it was time for Garfield to jump in, and that part went off without a hitch. He thought his part in the evening was finished, only to find out later it was only the beginning, as he said:

I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels absolutely thrilled to know what was going on for The Social Network actor then. It was all so unexpected but undeniably mesmerizing to watch. And though the evening was exciting and fun enough, Garfield and his glasses are by far one of the main takeaways from the event.

Regardless if you saw Andrew Garfield’s viral glasses moment as ‘sexy’ or felt his ‘unbridled terror,’ it was one for the books. It’s been a little over four years since Tom Holland last suited up as everyone's favorite wall crawler. Now, however he's currently deep into filming the fourth installment of his Spidey franchise. As of late, the Uncharted actor has been giving fans a bit of a look behind the curtain on the upcoming Marvel movie. With that, he just shared one way the film is paying homage to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s takes on the character, and boy is it cool. And I honestly can’t believe I missed this.

Tom Holland just gave fans a classy reason to zoom in on every stitch of his Brand New Day costume. Over on Complex Pop Culture’s Instagram, the account highlighted fresh quotes from its recent interview with theImpossible star that confirm what some fans have already been picking up on. Holland's new suit is a love letter to the Maguire and Garfield Spider-Man costumes. He told the outlet:

After the second and third look, I see how the upcoming Spider-Man flick is paying homage to its predecessor. Later in the same conversation, Holland spelled out the thinking behind the mash-up:

I recently wrote about what I hope Holland’s Spidey will learn from the Raimi-era films, but costume didn’t even cross my mind. However, if you’ve been tracking the on-set glimpses and official teases, the visual breadcrumbs line up. The raised webbing absolutely evokes Maguire’s vibe. Simultaneously, the sleeker black chest emblem and proportions nod toward Garfield’s suit, specifically, the near-perfect Web Head costume from The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

This absolutely is not an instance of copy-and-paste. Essentially, it's more so a tasteful blend of what came before, and that is a fantastic way to go.

What I love most is how the homage choice doubles as character work. Following the ending of No Way Home, Peter is operating without Stark tech, without his family and friends and without a safety net. Building a suit that carries DNA from his “big brothers” is such a beautiful little nod and way to honor the legacy of the chapters of the character before this MCU iteration.

The sentiment above definitely tracks with Holland’s recent comments about being more hands-on with this movie’s creative direction. Holland apparently dug into what fans responded to and shaped Peter’s next step with intention.

It’s clear Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is literally wearing his influences on his sleeve, and I’m so here for it. If, like me, you keep a calendar for all things new superhero movies, be aware that Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits the 2026 movie schedule on July 31 with production already in motion.

Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Silence. To many, it might seem like one of those movies doesn't belong. However, I'm here to tell you that they all belong, because they're all masterpieces from Martin Scorsese, including the latter.

Not too long ago, I questioned what Scorsese's best decade was. Even though I settled upon the ‘80s, I really considered putting the 2010s, since he had one hell of a ten year run. Well, in that decade, I feel like his crowning achievement wasn't The Wolf of Wall Street (or any Scorsese movie starring Leo), but rather 2016's Silence.

Based on the 1966 novel of the same name by Shuzaku Endo, Silence is one of my all-time favorite Scorsese movies. Here's why.

It's One Of Scorsese's Most Challenging Movies To Date…In A Good Way

Now, Scorsese is not what I would consider a “fun” director. What I mean is, he doesn't mix action movies with his serious work like Spielberg does (sometimes even within the same year). That said, I wouldn't say he's a director who regularly makes “deep” movies, either (like, he's no Tarkovsky making complex films like Stalker).

No, he just makes good (oftentimes great) movies. In other words, he doesn't typically make “challenging” films that most people find boring. But, sometimes he does, and Silence is one of those films.

Now, I know I just said it's “boring,” but I also said “most people.” The story is about two Portuguese Jesuit priests (played by Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who travel to ancient Japan to find their superior (Liam Neeson) who is believed to have given up the faith. However, once they arrive, they learn just how challenging it is to remain Christian, as Japan wants no part of it.

The priests are forced to either give up their faith, or suffer, and the “silence” is the non-response from God as his followers are tortured and killed in His name. Challenging stuff! Also slow, demanding-of-your-patience, stuff. Some might see this as a strike against it, but I feel it really rewards you if you're willing to see it through. It's masterful!

With Its Religious Angle, It Also Feels Like One Of Scorsese's Most Personal Films

My dad has a funny story. He attended Cardinal Hayes, which is an all-boys Catholic high school in the Bronx, and said that both Scorsese and Regis Philbin were alumni. But, while the school constantly brought up Philbin's name, he said they didn't say a peep about the filmmaker. It's almost as if (as my dad puts it), “They didn't want to associate with a guy who puts the F-word in everything.”

Now, I don't know if that's still the case (or even if it was entirely true back then), but that has always been the interesting thing about Scorsese. On one hand, he makes these violent gangster movies like Goodfellas (or, a superior gangster film like Casino - I said what I said). On the other hand, he makes deep, introspective films, some of which are based on the questioning of faith like The Last Temptation of Christ, Kundun, and yes, Silence.

Of the three I just mentioned, the last feels the most personal. Through Andrew Garfield's character, we almost get a sense that he's an avatar for Scorsese himself. He wants to believe, but it's often hard, or even impossible in a violent world.

Throughout the film, there are temptations for Garfield's character to denounce God, but his faith is just too foundational to him. Too baked in, and he suffers because of it. In that way, Silence feels like it's as much about the character's faith as it is Scorsese's.

Andrew Garfield Gives The Performance Of A Lifetime

Garfield can pretty much do it all (I mean, he's my favorite Spider-Man for a reason). However, I don't think he has ever had such a nuanced, revelatory performance as he had here.

In the film, he plays Sebastiao Rodrigues, a Catholic Jesuit priest who has his faith tested time and time again. Throughout the story, it's demanded of him to step on an image of Christ in denunciation of his faith. When he decides not to do it, others have to suffer in his stead, and he constantly wonders if it's selfish to keep the faith when others are being punished because of him.

You can see the torment written all over Garfield's face. Throughout the film, he watches people be tortured, and he feels like he's to blame. When he reaches out to God, he is met with silence until a crucial moment, when he finally feels he hears the voice of Jesus. This causes him to publicly disavow his faith, but you can tell in Garfield's expressions that he's holding onto his beliefs as closely as possible.

It's genuinely painful to watch. You can see that Rodrigues is caught between his faith and his morality, and none of it would work if Garfield couldn't showcase both in his performance. All of the acting in this film is phenomenal, but his talent truly stands out.

Japan Has Probably Never Looked So Beautiful…Or Punishing

I went to Japan last summer (it took me 26 hours and seven new-to-me movies, there and back!), and it was the experience of a lifetime. Japan is such a unique, wonderful country steeped in tradition and culture that there really is nothing else like it. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately, vacations cost money, so I guess I'll just have to settle with seeing the country in movies and TV shows. Now, Silence was actually filmed in Taiwan, but the 17th-century Japan presented here truly is beautiful…and yet incredibly punishing.

Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto really created a convincing, gorgeous Japan, and it almost feels like a character in itself. The crashing waves are tempestuous, almost like the emotions that are swirling in our Christian characters. Or, like the clash of belief systems that is presented here. The rural greenery feels both natural, but also alien, making us feel like our characters are trapped in an antagonistic paradise.

It's all of these conflicting elements that paint Japan as a beautiful, and yet uninviting place, and I really can't think of many other films where the setting just makes you feel the struggle of our protagonists, especially when it comes to a Scorsese movie.

That Ending Really Sticks With You

I love Scorsese's entire filmography, but, here's the thing. Even though I think he pretty much always sticks the landing, few of his movies actually have excellent final shots. For example, I can probably tell you how all of his best films end, but I'd have a hard time telling you the very last shot before the credits.

This isn't really a problem, per se, but a final shot can really burn itself into your memory for a lifetime. Like, I can remember Joe Pesci firing a gun at the camera at the end of Goodfellas, but I have a difficult time remembering the last shot in Scorsese's other movies. Except when it comes to Silence, which has such a potent final shot that I truly think it encapsulates the entire movie.

I won't spoil what happens since I want you to watch the movie for yourself, but I can tell you that when it ended, I just said, “Wow.” In fact I still frequently think about the film's final shot, and how much it impacted me as both a viewer, and as a Catholic.

It is generally agreed that Andrew Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man movies aren’t at the top of the franchise. However, it’s also generally agreed that this is not the fault of star Andrew Garfield. As a Spider-Man, he certainly has his fans, and those fans were quite excited to see him make a triumphant return in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Since then, there has been something of a campaign to see Garfield’s Peter Parker return, in either the Amazing Spider-Man 3 that we never saw or in some other project. For his part, Garfield admitted during the recent Middle East Film & Comic-Con (via ET) that he would love to play Spidey again, but only under specific conditions. Garfield said…

While actually making The Amazing Spider-Man 3 at this point seems unlikely, that ship has almost certainly sailed. It doesn’t sound like a project like that is what Andrew Garfield would want to do, even if the option were available to him. Instead, he’d like to do something a little “weird.”

It’s maybe not that surprising. Garfield has almost certainly already come to terms with his own franchise coming to an end, so he doesn’t need a new Amazing movie to exist. But with his character officially existing within the Marvel multiverse, there’s an opportunity to do something new or different with the character, and the actor seems quite up for that.

I think this sounds like a fantastic idea. As much as some people would love to just see Andrew Garfield play Peter Parker again, we already have an ongoing franchise of traditional live-action Spider-Man movies. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently filming. If we're going to continue to do something with Garfield's character, it needs to be different somehow.

Unfortunately, it may be too late for anything like this to come to pass. While I am all for seeing some Marvel multiverse movies that, like Fantastic Four, do something interesting with the concept, it seems likely that with the end of the Multiverse Saga in sight, there may not be much plan to anything of consequence with the concept after Secret Wars.

Of course, considering that Avengers: Doomsday is already bringing back some old superhero movie characters with the Fox X-Men actors returning, and it seems likely Secret Wars will do something similar, perhaps we could see Garfield back on screen as Spidey again. A movie like that could certainly do “weird” things with his character, so perhaps Garfield will get his wish.

Tom Holland is bad at spoilers. It’s become something of a joke whenever the actor goes on a press tour for a movie that you have to be careful and watch him because he’ll probably spill the beans. One assumes there are a lot of journalists who would love to interview Holland in hopes of being able to publish a major spoiler.

But apparently that’s exactly why the BBC’s Ali Plumb is Tom Holland’s favorite person to be interviewed by. The actor has said as much before, and when recently asked just why the Spider-Man actor feels that way, Plumb says it's because of the spoiler he didn’t pursue. Plumb said…

For the American audience to “dob him in” is essentially to snitch on somebody, and that’s what Plumb didn’t do when Tom Holland apparently inadvertently dropped the info that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire would actually be part of Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was the biggest rumor leading into the film, but everybody was clearly trying to keep it under wraps.

While most would follow up on whatever it was that Holland said, Ali Plumb did not. Instead, he just left the statement alone. It was only later that Plumb brought up what Tom Holland had said, with one of the actors whose appearance had been inadvertently revealed. Plumb continued…

The particular spoiler in question involved Tom Holland accidentally saying that he wasn’t on set during the day of Zendaya’s big fall stunt, which therefore indicated there was another Spider-Man in the movie. Check out the exchange

Andrew Garfield is certainly much better at lying, as Garfield flat-out denied appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home right up until the film’s release. Many actors try to talk around an answer in such a way that they’re not technically lying, but either way, there’s little argument that Tom Holland can’t do it.

Considering Holland’s history of spilling spoilers, he probably would have gotten in a bit of trouble if more attention had been brought to his slip, and it seems Holland appreciates that he wasn’t called out. Plumb said…

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day currently filming, there will be all-new opportunities for Tom Holland to say things he shouldn’t. Maybe he’ll give his favorite interviewer a scoop on purpose this time.

Few celebrity couples have arguably managed to garner as much attention as Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro have. While the two have yet to formally acknowledge their relationship, they’ve been spotted together on multiple occasions. Most recently, the couple – like many others – took in the festivities at this year’s Wimbledon Championships. The mere thought of the couple attending the event together is sweet enough. However, what really makes them the definition of “couple goals” is that they were dressed on theme.

Those who are familiar with the annual tennis championships in Wimbledon likely know that there’s a long-standing tradition, which stipulates that players wear white. At the same time, many attendees don white apparel as well. Well, that’s exactly what Monica Barbaro (35) and Andrew Garfield (41) did when they took in the games this weekend. Seriously, that’s one good-looking couple, and I can’t help but appreciate the fact that they coordinated their fits in such a way. All in all, this combined couple’s look is giving, “We’re fashionable but also quite dignified.” Quite frankly, I love seeing two stars match up so perfectly fashion-wise.

Relationship rumors initially began to swirl around Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro around January 2025, during which they were photographed at a party together. Over the next few months, Barbaro and Garfield’s outings became more frequent, and they even showed up at an Oscars afterparty together. The two actors have been quite shrewd when it comes to avoiding talk about their relationship. Barbaro even deftly dodged a question about it when asked about working with Garfield in Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial.

Famously, both actors prefer to maintain a level of privacy, particularly when it comes to their love lives. Monica Barbaro previously opened up about having deleted her social media accounts several times due to feeling overwhelmed at different points in her life. Nevertheless, she does still maintain some kind of solid presence on the Internet in order to promote her work. Barbaro does also share some sweet snippets of her personal life, with her recent summer photo dump being a prime example of that.

As far as their work obligations go, Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro are keeping busy. Garfield has an upcoming film on the 2025 movie schedule called After the Hunt, which is a thriller that’s helmed by the aforementioned Luca Guadagnino. Barbaro, for her part, spent a portion of this year promoting the second season of her action comedy series FUBAR (which is streamable with a Netflix subscription).

It’s hard to say what lies ahead for this reported Barbaro/Garfield romance at this point. As someone who likes the pairing, I’d hope that the two stay together. Simultaneously, after their Wimbledon outing, I’ll be keeping a close eye on their clothing choices moving forward.

While one has to wonder how rumored girlfriend Monica Barbaro has to say about this exchange, the man himself reacted in an adorable, slightly awkward way that’ll probably please fans. After reading off the tweet that connected Mr. Garfield with his public admirer (with her consent, of course), our We Live in Time star had a chance to do something most fans would pay for. He responded to the message through a charmingly careful response that comes off as seriously adorable, as you’ll read below:

Hilarious. It takes a lot to admire a fan for their creative fantasies in the middle of a crowd, and then meet them afterwards. Much like Andrew Garfield himself, his fans seem to be cool in the face of somewhat pressured public appearances that highlight such activities. Also, if anyone mentions a potential Avengers: Secret Wars role in his presence, I suppose Garfield now has an ace in the hole he can play to disrupt the situation.

The ultimate cherry on top of this amusing story would have been if this fan had gotten Andrew Garfield to sign a laptop after their meeting. However, if this didn't happen, there’s always the press tour for Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt, which is slated to be released on October 10th. If the film’s director is any indication, we just might see a renewed tide of Garfield thirst tweets, and a boost in PC sales, before the year’s end.

One could argue that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home is one of the worst kept secrets in cinematic history, if not at the top of the list. Rumors, reports and leaked set photos spoiled that the actors would reprise their versions of Spidey long after their respective film series ended. What wasn’t known ahead of time, however, was how their Peter Parkers would be introduced into the story centered on Tom Holland’s version. As it turns out, director Jon Watts had to change Maguire and Garfield’s first scenes thanks to some astute predictions on Reddit.

Along with explaining why he dropped out of directing The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Watts opened up the work that went into bringing three Spider-Man together in Spider-Man: No Way Home while attending a panel at the Mediterrane Film Festival, moderated by Collider’s Steven Weintraub. Acknowledging that Maguire and Garfield’s Spider-Man returns had already been rumored during shooting, the filmmaker started off talking about how this portion of the script was improved with the following:

Just when Tom Holland’s Peter Parker was at his lowest point, his older counterparts arrived from their universes, though their entrances are obscured so that it’s not immediately clear who they are. The problem is that Jon Watts noticed during principal photography that some fans on Reddit had already envisioned such a scene, explaining:

Since so many people around the world saw Avengers: Endgame’s game-changing portals scene, I’m not surprised some of the more hardcore MCU fans imagined a similar moment being depicted in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Great minds think alike, after all. But Jon Watts wasn’t going to be predictable, so instead, he came up with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parkers coming through portals, in that order, at Ned’s grandma’s house. The circumstances of how they came together may have changed, but ultimately Spider-Man: No Way Home fulfilled its mission to have the three cinematic Spideys join forces to battle a bunch of memorable foes. Whether we’ll ever see the Three Peters team up again remains to be seen, but we will reunite with Tom Holland’s version when the upcoming Spider-Man movie Brand New Day is released on July 31, 2026.

Monica Barbaro is a woman of many talents. She is an incredible actress who has proven herself with her roles in A Complete Unknown and Top Gun: Maverick. She's also a talented musician, which she showcased while portraying Joan Baez in the aforementioned Bob Dylan biopic. It also seems like she has another new Hollywood talent, dodging unwanted questions from entertainment journalists. She recently proved that by brushing off a question regarding her boyfriend and future co-star Andrew Garfield, impressively directing the attention towards the film instead of her personal life.

This happened when Barbaro attended the premiere of Fubar Season 2, the show she stars alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in. She seemed excited to answer questions about the buzzy 2025 TV schedule entry and working with one of the most iconic action stars of all time. Then Entertainment Tonight decided to address the elephant in the room: Barbaro was recently cast alongside her reported partner, Andrew Garfield, in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film, Artificial. When she was asked about how she feels about working with Garfield, she deftly responded, saying:

For context, Barbaro and Garfield have been reportedly dating since the beginning of this year. The couple has been spotted on numerous outings together, and their relationship was seemingly confirmed when The Amazing Spider-Man star was photographed meeting up with his beau after the Met Gala. According to Deadline, Artificial is set to revolve around OpenAI when the company saw CEO Sam Altman’s employment status change dramatically over a few days. The script is written by Simon Rich, who is mostly known for being a former writer at Saturday Night Live and a humorist for The New Yorker. It sounds like a new direction for all talent involved, and I can’t wait to learn more.

The project is an exciting one, so luckily for Barbaro, there was a lot to talk about outside of just working alongside her boyfriend. She made sure to note her excitement about collaborating with Guadagnino, and how everyone in Hollywood wants to work with the Call Me By Your Name filmmaker. She said:

Maybe someday we will get cutesy buzzy details about Barbaro and Garfield's relationship, but for right now, the actress seems to be keeping her personal life personal. Gracefully avoiding questions like this is a move many celebrities have perfected over time, and it seems like she has it down. Right now, I’m focusing on the project as well, at least until this couple decides to open up and share their love story with the world.

Artificial is still in the early pre-production stages, so it will be a while before we see the film on the big screen. Fans will also be able to see Andrew Garfield in a Guadagnino film very soon, as the actor is set to star alongside Julia Roberts in After The Hunt, which is one of the many exciting projects on the 2025 movie schedule.

Charlie Cox’s career continues to thrive, particularly for being on the 2025 TV schedule for his return as Daredevil on Disney+, but it wasn’t a straight and narrow path for the actor to find success. Did you know that when Cox was trying to come up in Hollywood, he lived in a house with Jamie Dornan, Robert Pattinson, Eddie Redmayne and Andrew Garfield? Cox recalled the time the five Brits were all struggling to get auditions together, and it’s pretty wild that they all made it.

Except apparently they all didn’t make it. While talking about the time (circa 2008) when Cox was living with a group of future movie stars, he mentioned “there was actually another guy” who would hang with them who didn’t make the big time. Awkward. He wouldn’t elaborate on the nameless old pal, but he did reminisce on being in Los Angeles with the guys. In his words:

For Cox, he got 2007’s Stardust alongside Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer before nabbing a role on Boardwalk Empire a few years later.

Jamie Dornan’s first movie was in Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antionette before striking big on Once Upon A Time ahead of The Fall and Fifty Shades Of Grey. Redmayne was in Elizabeth: The Golden Age and The Other Boleyn Girl early on. Pattinson, of course, got Twilight, and Andrew Garfield got big in the 2010s with The Social Network and The Amazing Spider-Man after doing a few indie films.

Andrew Garfield previously talked about the group of guys, saying they are “still very close” and “sincerely fully support each other” in life as they continue to all lead lives they can surely relate to. Technically Cox’s Daredevil and Garfield’s Spider-Man were in the same movie via Spider-Man: No Way Home, but not in the same scene. They weren’t in the Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal either, but how cool would it be if the fellow Marvel stars got to share the screen?

While Cox was in Los Angeles for Jimmy Kimmel Live, he also said he ran into Redmayne and ended up having an impromptu hangout with him to catch up. How sweet is this group of friends-turned-stars? Here’s hoping they get to work together (or at least reunite to recreate their photo) soon.

Spider-Man: No Way Home was a record-breaking success for the MCU, and stands in stark juxtaposition to recent misses like Eternals or The Marvels' box office flop. And as such, it seems like a no brainer (from the outside at least) to bring back Maguire and Garfield sometime down the line. But the studio hasn't officially confirmed this will happen, with fans debating when it might happen online.

It remains to be seen if Garfield will actually pop up in Doomsday or Secret Wars, but it wouldn't be totally surprising if they did. Another option for them to return to the big screen would be in the developing Spider-Man: Brand New Day. That blockbuster is expected to begin filming this summer, and will finally continue the narrative of Tom Holland's threequel. Doctor Strange's spell saw the entire world forget who Peter Parker was, so perhaps his fellow Spider-Men will be the only people who still remember who he is. The three Peter Parkers had great chemistry on screen, so why not give them another adventure together?

The next MCU movie hitting theaters is Thunderbolts* on May 2nd as part of the 2025 movie release list. We'll just have to wait and see if/when Garfield plays Spider-Man again.

While No Way Home proved that Garfield could easily slip back into character as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, he seemingly wants the right project if he's going to once again reprise that role. And considering just how versatile of an actor the Social Network star is, why not give him something exciting and new to tackle?

Exactly what "unique, and offbeat and surprising" way Andrew Garfield might return as Spider-Man remains to be seen. But given continued fan excitement over his role in No Way Home (especially Peter saving Zendaya's MJ like he failed to save Gwen), it's safe to say moviegoers would be thrilled regardless.

Sine we're in the midst of the Multiverse Saga, it feels like just about anything is possible narratively. Just look what we know about Avengers: Doomsday, namely the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is returning and playing Doctor Doom. And there are rumors about other OG Avengers like Chris Evans possibly also taking new roles in that highly anticipated blockbuster.

Being somebody who writes about movie news on the internet, I get a very close look at which actors and actresses social media tends to blow up over. While Tobey Maguire’s version had his own black suit arc in Spider-Man 3, albeit not in one of the best live-action Spidey movies, the We Live in Time star never got the chance to explore that part of Peter Parker’s mythology. But Secret Wars could be the perfect place to give his character that moment finally. Besides, he and Maguire have both been rumored to return for a new Spider-Man flick, so it's not out of the question, I'd say.

Historically, the original 1984 Secret Wars comics are where Peter Parker first bonded with the black symbiote suit, unknowingly taking on the alien parasite that would later become Venom. With the MCU’s multiversal storyline expanding, there’s a real opportunity for Garfield’s Peter to experience this long-awaited transformation—perhaps even hinting at a darker turn before ultimately rejecting the suit.

And, if Secret Wars is meant to be the grand finale of the Multiverse Saga, there’s no better time to bring back the Under the Banner alum’s Spidey for one last epic battle.

Ever since No Way Home reignited love for the British actor's version of the character, fans have been loudly campaigning for Andrew Garfield to return to the MCU or Sony’s Spider-Verse. And with Joe and Anthony Russo's SW expected to be a game-changing crossover event with major significance for the ongoing Marvel timeline, bringing back the actor veteran performer would be a crowd-pleasing move for Marvel Studios.
