The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a giant place, and there are plenty of upcoming Marvel movies that fans are looking forward to. Next up will be Destin Daniel Cretton's Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which will pick up Tom Holland's title character after No Way Home's ending. A few pages of the script were recently released online, including a fun homage to Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire.

Fans who spent years watching the Marvel movies in order lost it when the three Peter Parkers united in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Cretton shared three pages of No Way Home's script (via EW), including annotations by the director. One such note is about the hero's new suit, reading:

Honestly, I love this. While there are plenty of fans hoping to see Maguire and Garfield's Peter Parkers return to the MCU in future projects like Avengers: Secret Wars, this is already one example of how their legacy lives on. Peter's new suit is inspired by their multiversal crossover, which is why it has a more traditional blue and red look to it.

While Tom Holland's suits have always been fitted with Stark Industries tech, things will be different in Brand New Day. Peter is completely on his own, and his suit will therefore look a bit more homemade. Although I have to wonder if Doctor Strange's spell from No Way Home also erased the memories of the other two Peter Parkers, in addition to everyone in Earth-616.

Only time will tell if we'll ever see the three Peter Parkers back on the big screen together, but it's fun to hear how Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Men are still influencing Brand New Day. And it explains why we'll be seeing a more traditional suit worn by Holland's hero when he hits theaters this summer.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day's first trailer thrilled fans, especially thanks to its inclusion of both Jon Bernthal's Punisher and Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner. The only things certain in life are death, taxes, change, and… if there’s a spoiler for a new Marvel movie floating around, Mark Ruffalo will more than likely let it slip. No one in the MCU has looser lips, and his latest offhand comment has fans spiraling again. The actor casually dropped a line that has people convinced Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man could swing back onto the big screen in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars. Here's why.

During a recent Q&A, Mark Ruffalo let something slip that immediately got people talking. A video shared online and picked up by SuperHeroHype shows the Hulk actor casually mentioning that Spider-Man will be facing a very specific kind of threat. And yeah, he says it pretty clearly:

That one line has completely taken on a life of its own across social media, with insiders and online scoopers suggesting Ruffalo might not have been talking about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man at all. A lot of the speculation centers on Venom being that “alien,” with Garfield potentially squaring off against him. And honestly, it’s not coming out of nowhere. Spider-Man: No Way Home already proved Marvel is more than willing to bring legacy characters back into the mix. Garfield’s return didn’t feel like a one-off cameo; it felt like a reintroduction, with the door very much left open for more.

Fans are also zeroing in on one specific moment from that film. When Tobey Maguire and Holland’s Spider-Men talk about fighting aliens, Garfield’s Peter casually admits he hasn’t had that experience yet. At the time, it played like a throwaway line, and it almost certainly was. Now, paired with Ruffalo’s comment, it’s starting to feel a lot more like a setup.

Add in the fact that we know a piece of the symbiote was left behind in Holland's Universe and that Marvel is building toward Secret Wars, a storyline that’s basically designed to pull characters from across different timelines and realities, and suddenly the theory starts to feel a little more grounded.

Of course, there’s another, much simpler explanation here. Ruffalo could’ve been talking about literally any Spider-Man story involving aliens. The MCU isn’t exactly short on extraterrestrial threats. Between existing setups and future projects, there are plenty of directions for comment to go without bringing Garfield or Venom back into the picture.

But hey, speculating and coming up with fan theories is half the fun, right? It’s also worth noting that Mark Ruffalo is confirmed to appear in the upcoming Spider-Man flick, with the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day featuring both Punisher and Banner. That gives his comment a much more immediate context, one that doesn’t necessarily point to a multiverse-level reveal. For all we know, there’s just an alien in the next Spidey movie, and it’s Tom Holland facing off against it. I guess we will just have to wait until the movie hits the 2026 movie schedule on July 31 for at least half of the puzzle to be answered.

There’s nothing new about comic book movie fans dissecting every frame of a trailer for a new superhero movie. I mean, at this point, Marvel has practically conditioned us all into looking for clues and easter eggs, case in point, the entire marketing run of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Now, folks are at it again with the narrative-refreshing sequel Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Andrew Garfield’s reaction to one “insane” trailer theory has to be seen to be enjoyed in full.

Who could forget the No Way Home trailer’s already iconic moment when Sandman, Electro, and Lizard hurled themselves at Spider-Man in a scene ripped from a comic splash page? Eagle-eyed fans instantly spotted odd negative space in the scene, sparking (correct) fan speculation that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were returning. Now, Brand New Day’s marketing faces similar scrutiny, and a hilarious clip of an interview Garfield gave to Capital FM (see below) is making the rounds and is a must-watch.

In the clip above, the host shows Garfield a frame from the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer featuring the Web-Head facing assassin ninjas known as the Hand. As with No Way Home, there’s notable negative space at the bottom. The host asks him, “There’s room for more characters… Do you have anything to comment on the matter? Are you back in this film?”

The We Live In Time lead, smiling throughout, pushes back at the complete desperation of the “conspiracy.” He responds:

Not ready to let this line of inquiry go, the interviewer points to the space below the wall crawler where they’ve circled in red potential characters erased from the image. Still, Garfield isn’t having it, continuing:

Obviously, the interviewer, like many interviewers before them, is quite frustrated with the Tick, Tick Boom! Star’s “I’m not the werewolf” energy. And for good reason, as it's pretty clear the actor is playing with all of our expectations. He follows up his denial with:

Alright, Andrew, you got us. I’m joking, of course. It’s obvious the Social Network actor enjoys teasing fans. Still, his attitude is very different now from how he acted before No Way Home’s release. Back then, he repeatedly denied being in the movie, which turned out to be untrue. This time, he seems to be having fun and keeping everyone guessing. Is this another trick, or does his lack of denial mean he’s really not in it? Maybe Garfield is playing 4D chess, or maybe this theory really is “insane,” levels of wild speculation.

Is Andrew Garfield in the upcoming Marvel movie? Have characters been erased from the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer? Who knows. But luckily for us, we do not have long to wait as the movie swings onto the 2026 movie schedule soon enough. All will be revealed when the film hits theaters on July 31, 2026.

While there was a time when it didn’t look like Andrew Garfield would ever play Spider-Man again following The Amazing Spider-Man 2, that all changed with Spider-Man: No Way Home. Even before the 2021 movie’s release, Garfield repeatedly lied about his involvement with it, and five years later, he continues to field questions about another reprisal now that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has blow the multiverse wide open. The actor’s recent take on still dealing with this lines up fantastically with one of the best jokes from fellow MCU movie Deadpool & Wolverine.

Andrew Garfield has been making the press rounds to talk about his new movies The Magic Faraway Tree, which opened on the 2026 movies schedule this past weekend. But as I already laid out, Spider-Man frequently gets addressed in these interviews, and while he appeared on Heart, he had this to say about on the constant questions concerning Marvel’s Web-Slinger:

I don’t know if Andrew Garfield did this on purpose or it’s just a fun coincidence, but this immediately calls to mind the moment in Deadpool & Wolverine when the title protagonists fall out of a portal onto one of the cars at the dealership where Peter Wisdom works. When two kids recognize them, Deadpool says about Wolverine, “You’re damn straight it is. Fox killed him. Disney brought him back. They’re gonna make him do this ’til he’s 90.” I don’t think Garfield will still be donning the skintight red and blue suit until then, but then again, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are still playing Professor X and Magneto well into their 80s, so I guess anything is possible.

Now you may think this means Andrew Garfield is tired of the Spider-Man questions nearly 15 years after he debuted as the character, but far from it. He also had this to say on the subject:

So the mystery remains about whether or not Andrew Garfield will ever play Spider-Man for a fourth time, but he’s certainly prepared to continue being asked about this portion of his career if he lives to be a nonagenarian. Regardless of your personal ranking of the Spider-Man movies, there’s no denying that Spider-Man: No Way Home stands out among the rest for bringing three live-action versions of Peter Parker together. Tom Holland’s Peter (Peter 1) joined forces with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of the character (Peter 2 and Peter 3) in the latter half of the movie against foes Green Goblin, Electro, Sandman and Lizard. Not only did this make for an epic superhero team-up, but it also produced a funny sequence between the three Peter actors that was heavily improvised, one part of which surprised Garfield.

The sequence I’m talking about comes during No Way Home’s third act, where the Peters are breaking down their unique experiences as Spider-Man in the respective universes while preparing for the final battle. Andrew Garfield reflected on filming this portion of the 2021 superhero movie while speaking with Hits Radio, saying:

Andrew Garfield’s Peter was the first of the older two Peter Parkers to be roped into the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Ned accidentally conjuring a portal to his location when he was trying to find his own Peter. Tobey Maguire’s Peter arrived shortly thereafter, with both of them having been pulled into the main MCU reality by the effects of Doctor Strange’s botched spells, just like the aforementioned villains, plus Doctor Octopus. So naturally their primary objective was to make their way back home with these villains in tow, but it was great they got a little time to just shoot the breeze before having to clock in more superhero time.

Then Andrew Garfield highlighted the part during this sequence when Peter 2 called Peter 3 “amazing,” a fun nod to the Amazing Spider-Man film series, along with arguably the most well-known adjective to describe Marvel Comics’ Wall-Crawler. Garfield didn’t expect Tobey Maguire to say this, adding:

Thankfully, all three Spider-Men made it out of Spider-Man: No Way Home in one piece, but whether we’ll ever see the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield incarnations again officially remains a mystery. There are rumors that Maguire’s Spidey will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, but as far as Garfield is concerned, he said another Spidey reprisal would need to be “something very unique, and offbeat and surprising” for him to get back on board. So that’s not a no, but more a ‘let’s wait and see what they have to offer,’ assuming this is even being considered.

Although it does look like Brand New Day isn't a multiversal story, and will instead focusing on various characters in New York City. Then again, the movie's trailer is still likely guarding a number of big secrets.

It remains to be seen if Garfield ends up playing Spider-Man again, either in Brand New Day or either of the next two Avengers movies. But now that he's reprised that role, the chatter will likely continue for the foreseeable future.

Andrew Garfield has had a killer career on the stage and screen, earning a Tony Award and Oscar nomination in the process. Some of the best Andrew Garfield movies have him playing "good" guys, but that changed with the recent drama After the Hunt (which is streaming now with an Amazon Prime subscription). And after finally watching Luca Guadagnino's latest movie, I really need to see more of the actor in villainous roles.

Garfield is known for his time in the Spider-Man movies, so he's pretty synonymous with playing a hero. That's why I was so taken with what he brought to the table with After the Hunt, which is one of the best parts of the movie IMO. I'm just hoping this is the beginning of the actor's villain era.

I Hope After The Hunt Is The Start Of Garfield's Villain Era

While fans are hoping that Garfield once again suits up as Spider-Man in upcoming Marvel movies, I'm still not over what he brought to the table as Hank Gibson in After the Hunt. In the movie, he's a philosophy professor at Yale University who is accused of sexually assaulting a PhD student. He's the primary antagonist of the project, with Garfield bringing a ton of emotionality to the character as his life begins to spiral out of control.

Throughout the movie's 139-minute runtime, Hank refuses to take any responsibility for what happened between him and Ayo Edebiri's Maggie. And after letting himself into Alma's vacation home (without permission), the two have a tense conversation about their own relationship. He tries to initiate sex with her, despite being told no multiple times. It's the final straw for Hank, and shows how little he cares about actual consent.

This was a big departure for Andrew Garfield, who is known for his delightful personality and years fighting crime as Peter Parker. I loved to hate Hank during After the Hunt, which is why I'm hoping to see the 42-year-old actor get to play more villainous roles in the future. It would be especially interesting to see this dynamic in genre work, highlighting the change from his time saving people's lives in the Amazing Spider-Man movies.

Garfield is great at being a hero, including his Tony-winning performance as Prior Walter in Angels in America. But he's a versatile talent, and villainy looked good on him. Bring on the antagonists!

Of course, this isn't the common sentiment about the future of Garfield's career. After the three Peter Parkers united in No Way Home, fans have been hoping that he'll return as Spider-Man once again. We'll just have to wait and see if that or another villain role happens first.

If you’re a fan of Guillermo del Toro like I am, you know how magnificent it was when news was announced that the Oscar-winning filmmaker was making his own adaptation of Frankenstein – which he has been talking about making for nearly twenty years. The director has always had a really tender approach to portraying monsters in movies, from Pan’s Labyrinth to The Shape of Water. Despite my massive excitement for the movie, there was one change made during production that had me less interested. Now that I’ve seen the movie – coming to those with a Netflix subscription on November 7, I need to talk about it.

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein officially became part of upcoming horror movies when it was picked up by Netflix in 2023. But, right before production started in early 2024, it was announced that Andrew Garfield had dropped out of the movie due to “scheduling conflicts,” and Jacob Elordi would be taking over. I want to talk about that change, and my thoughts on it after experiencing the film itself.

No Shade To Jacob Elordi, I Just Really Wanted To See Andrew Garfield In Frankenstein When He Was Cast

Now, it’s not like I think Jacob Elordi isn’t talented. I found him to be especially haunting in Euphoria, and was impressed by his performance as Elvis Presley in Priscilla. But, Andrew Garfield is one of my favorite actors of all time. I remember seeing him in The Amazing Spider-Man, and feeling like he brought so much depth to Peter Parker, and following many of his performances since – with one of my other highlights from his career being in 2021’s Tick, Tick… Boom!

But, the actor has never really done a horror-leaning genre film. The idea of him playing The Creature in Frankenstein (which is one of my top books ever) and being directed by the master of horror and fantasy, and one of the filmmakers I most respect working today just made me feel like I was living in a simulation in the best way, and I know I wasn’t the only one. It felt like it could be a really special role for the actor, and when he was replaced, I was disappointed.

Now That I've Seen Frankenstein, I Wouldn't Want Anyone Else In The Role

I decided to see Frankenstein in theaters earlier this week, despite the difficulty I found just to find a showing, and I can honestly say, it’s going to be one of my top movies of the year. The movie itself took me back to reading the novel for the first time in high school, and falling in love with Mary Shelley’s gothic classic that has a lot to say about the nature of humanity through its often horrific plotline.

One of the pivotal reasons why I loved Frankenstein is because of Elordi specifically. The actor’s specific stature of 6 '5, and his innocent yet chiseled features is exactly the kind of creature that I never knew I wanted to see, but instantly clicked for me as the perfect casting choice for del Toro’s movie. Elordi, who has been called “hot Frankenstein,” brings some really beautiful emotion and gentleness to the role of the creature, while also having moments where I completely feared him and what he might do. By the end of the movie, I was nearly in tears having gone through the journey, and so much has to do with Elordi’s performance.

If you were disappointed like me about the recasting, I implore you to move that aside, and check out Frankenstein – coming to Netflix on November 7. Now, I actually think Elordi was the better choice than Garfield, even though I will always wonder how the actor would have played the role.

Talk about taking your job seriously. Because while Garfield and Stone dated and remain friends, he wasn't willing to give the Poor Things star the tea about his No Way Home role. Instead she was kept in the dark until the three Peter Parkers were revealed to crossing over for the multiversal blockbuster. Clearly the Social Network actor takes his responsibilities seriously.

Theaters erupted when Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire entered in No Way Home, and the studio's tight security is at least partly to blame for keeping spoilers under wraps. Later in her same interview, Stone was asked about her character Gwen Stacy being honored in the movie, specifically when Garfield's Peter saved MJ the way he failed in Amazing Spider-Man 2. When asked if she'd seen the threequel, she said:

Well, at least she was honest. While Stone thinks she'll eventually see Spider-Man: No Way Home, she hasn't gotten the chance yet. Maybe she's waiting or it to finally hit Disney+, which it has not at the point of writing this story. Either way, it seems like she might be interesting in seeing how the Amazing Spider-Man franchise is honored throughout its runtime.

Now that both Garfield and Maguire returned to their roles as Spider-Man, fans are curious if/when they'll one again appear in upcoming Marvel movies. Specifically the next two Avengers movies, which are expected to span the multiverse. For his part, Andrew Garfield cryptically responded to chatter he'll suit back up, although he hasn't been confirmed yet via the Doomsday cast announcement.

All will be revealed when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18th of next year as part of the 2026 movie release list, and Secret Wars which will follow suit December 17th, 2027. Fingers crossed we get to see Garfield appear in at least one of those titles.

The most anticipated upcoming Marvel movies are definitely Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, and there's a ton of rumors and theories circulating online about what The Russo Brothers have up their sleeve. As rumors are swirling that Andrew Garfield might return for those titles, he's offered an honest update about the possibility of The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

What we know about Avengers: Doomsday is limited, and fans are filling in the blanks about what it and Secret Wars might contain. Ever since Garfield returned as Spider-Man in No Way Home, fans have been campaigning for the scrapped Amazing Spider-Man threequel. While speaking with GQ to promote his new movie After The Hunt, he spoke about that project, saying:

That was pretty cut and dry. While Andrew Garfield famously lied about playing Spider-Man in No Way Home, these comments do feel clear and purposeful. Sounds like we shouldn't hold our breath for the Amazing Spider-Man franchise to ever return on the big screen. Luckily, Garfield's first two movies are streaming now.

While some fans might not believe Garfield given his story of lying to guard Marvel secrets, it makes sense that Sony and Marvel wouldn't want to go backward by returning to the previous Spider-Man franchise. But that doesn't mean that we'll never see the Social Network actor back as Peter Parker sometime in the future.

Andrew Garfield responded to chatter he's going to appear in Secret Wars, laughing while telling audiences that we'll have to wait and see what happens. So while The Amazing Spider-Man 3 isn't happening, fans are holding out hope that we'll see him back as Spidey. After No Way Home featured all three Spider-Men, seemingly anything's possible. After all, we're deep into the Multiverse Saga.

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 never got written, although the second movie's ending was definitely hinting at the Sinister Six being formed to fight Andrew Garfield's hero. Instead Sony and Marvel made a deal to bring Spider-Man into the MCU, and Tom Holland's tenure as Peter Parker began. But the multiversal story of No Way Home allowed for both villains and Spider-Man from the previous two franchises to return to the big screen.

Only time will tell if Andrew Garfield actually ends up returning for either of the next two Avengers movies. If Secret Wars follows the comic story of the same name, his version of Spider-Man could easily end up appearing. Although it was rumored that Tom Holland might be the lead character of that blockbuster.

Avengers: Doomsday will arrive in theaters December 18th as part of the 2026 movie release list, and Secret Wars will follow suit the next year on December 17th. Hopefully we get some information about Garfield's possible role sooner rather than later.

Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino has entertained viewers over the past few years with thought-provoking projects like Challengers, Queer and Call Me By Your Name. He undoubtedly aims to do that again with After the Hunt as it hits the 2025 movie calendar. Critics have seen the psychological thriller, and while they agree Julia Roberts is solid as a college professor with a secretive past, not all of them are on board with Guadagnino’s latest movie.

Julia Roberts stars as Alma Imhoff, whose protégée Maggie Resnick (Ayo Edebiri) accuses Alma's friend and fellow Yale philosophy professor Hank Gibson (Andrew Garfield) of assault. This leads to a dark secret of her own resurfacing. In CinemaBlend’s review of After the Hunt, Sarah El-Mahmoud says Luca Guadagnino has made another movie that feels like every frame is art, and the actors rise to the occasion. However, its substance is severely lacking, and she rates the movie 2.5 stars out of 5, writing:

Tomris Laffly of RogerEbert.com gives the upcoming LGBTQ+ movie 3 out of 4 stars, saying the script smartly reveals the depth of its trio of main characters slowly, which keeps us engaged and questioning their reliability as narrators. Julia Roberts’ performance is one of After the Hunt’s biggest rewards, Laffly says, and continues:

Nick Schager of the Daily Beast says movie lovers should “Skip This,” despite his calling it Julia Roberts’ best performance in years. It’s a “wannabe conversation starter,” Schager says, that introduces thorny issues but doesn’t explore them. The critic concludes:

David Rooney of THR says director Luca Guadagnino and screenwriter Nora Garrett seem convinced their exploration of power dynamics, thorny ethics and generational divide are current, but it actually feels quite outdated. The critic writes:

Ryan Lattanzio of IndieWire agrees, giving it a C and saying the ideas feel ripped from another era and slapped into After the Hunt without actually having anything to say. The critic writes:

After the Hunt has garnered just 44% on Rotten Tomatoes, but despite critics’ issues with what the movie has to say (if anything), it sounds like Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield brought their A-games.

But the latter title is expected to be a multiversal story, with some fans think that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield might return to play Peter Parker. The Social Network star was asked by MTV about that possibility, and answered uncomfortably by saying:

Garfield is shown laughing through this conversation, while interviewer Josh Horowitz claimed that he'll be in Secret Wars and getting to have new Marvel crossovers in the process. But as the 42 year-old actor says, we'll have to wait for the next two Avengers movies to see whether reports about his return as Spider-Man are accurate.

As previously mentioned, Garfield was forced to lie about his role in No Way Home for a long time, until the movie finally arrived in theaters in 2021. On top of creating the viral Spider-Man meme, the three Peter Parkers had great chemistry, and now fans want to see more of Garfield and Tobey Maguire in particular.

Whether or not this actually happens in Avengers: Secret Wars, but it doesn't seem out of the question. Fans who spent years watching the Marvel movies in order would love to see the previous Spider-Man return, and in the comics Secret Wars is usually a multiversal conflict that sees a number of unexpected characters collide. Whether or not that includes Garfield's Peter Parker remains to be seen.

Now that Garfield and Maguire have appeared in the MCU, the door is seemingly open for them to return sometime in the future. The end of No Way Home saw them return to their universes, presumably with the memories of meeting Tom Holland's character. They might be the only people who remember that Peter Parker, following Doctor Strange's spell. We'll just have to see if/when we get to see the Tick, Tick... BOOM! actor suited back up.

Only time will tell if Andrew Garfield is actually returning as Spider-Man, but one thing is clear: fans aren't going to believe his comments one way or another. At least, not after denying his role in No Way Home for so long.

We all know that many of us love eating good food, which is why cooking shows have been a TV staple pretty much since the medium began. With that go innumerable baking shows that have hit the heights of popularity, like The Great British Baking Show (which has beloved celebrity episodes) and its easily watchable cousin The Great American Baking Show: Celebrity Summer. This is all to say that lots of people enjoy engaging in the culinary arts as a relaxing pastime, and it turns out that After the Hunt star Julia Roberts is among them.

In fact, the director of her latest film, Luca Guadagnino, recently opened up about how she baked banana bread for him and their movie’s production designer, which had airline staff “starstruck” because it was so “beautiful.” Unfortunately, an Entertainment Tonight reporter who tried to get the scoop on the Pretty Woman lead’s secret recipe just got stopped in their tracks by Andrew Garfield. Take a look!

Well! Looks like Roberts can easily keep her baking secrets a mystery as long as the We Live In Time actor is around, right? The “sexy” and “neuroses”-filled Golden Globes presenter asked his co-star if she was planning to give away her recipe (which we all now at least know doesn’t have chocolate or nuts), and when the Leave the World Behind star gave an emphatic “NO” he relieved her of any additional denial duties, and said:

He’s not wrong. For one thing, pretty much every family has tried and true recipes that are passed down or even stumbled upon and held near and dear to the heart of everyone in that family. That’s to such an extent that sometimes only certain people in those families will be entrusted with the details of how to make them.

Secondly, people like Roberts (though that’s, shockingly, not actually her family name) have lived most of their lives in the public eye. Yes, she’s generally managed to do so with grace, but I can totally see her not wanting literally everyone in the world to be able to make her banana bread. Surely we can all find a recipe we love without it having to be hers, right? The Spider-Man: No Way Home star (who’d love to play Spidey again, as long as it’s in a “weird” way) continued, while looking right at the camera, and added:

WOW. Garfield might be a bit trepidatious when it comes to award shows, but he’s fierce when protecting baking enigmas, and as far as I’m concerned that counts as one more thing to love about him.

2025 has brought plenty of its own exciting and viral moments to pop culture, including Andrew Garfield’s ‘sexy’ glasses bit at The Golden Globes. But for the actor, it was anything but what the internet perceived it to be. He reveals what was really going through his head in the lead up and during the misconstrued string of events. And it really is the complete opposite from how it was read on TV.

Ahead of his 2025 movie release, After the Hunt’s premiere, the actor chatted with MTV about the iconic GG presentation clip. Per a video on Instagram, Garfield shares the real story behind his accidental but wildly watchable movements while introducing Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy. As he prepared to rehash the full succession, ahead of the onstage antics, he added,“You can quote me on this,” before beginning:

I’ve never thought about how presenters must feel ahead of their timeslot in annual award shows, but I can only imagine many feel similar to Garfield. The amount of star power in the room, let alone maybe even at someone’s side can be unnerving enough. Just take the Spider-Man actor’s buzzy Goldie Hawn Oscars homage for example.

But, things really started going sideways for him as he and Washington walked to the designated spot in front of the microphone. After considering where to stop, sharing the space, and whether people can hear them adequately (among other details), he realizes he needs glasses to read his part. Thankfully, he had them in tow, as he said:

I’m starting to feel the wave Garfield was riding in that ninety seconds or so. It’s one thing to be amped up ahead of the moment, but a full other when you stay in that type of energy. Which, again, is wildly understandable with how big of a night it was to celebrate even bigger celebs. (But it does make sense why Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro became couple goals over the summer in matching white Wimbledon outfits.)

Once he secured the glasses on his face, things didn’t improve all that much. He then realized not only was his shirt overly unbuttoned for his comfort, it wouldn’t stay put after attempting to adjust it properly. The failure, in turn elicited a facial expression and resulted in reminding himself to stay calm:

Yikes. What a series of unfortunate events, but at least none of it read that way to the unsuspecting viewer. It only elicited more love for one of the most recent internet movie star boyfriends. And maybe enticed the fans to imagine more hyper specific tech involved thirst tweets. Fans may have thirsted over the moment, but honestly there's more NSFW content on Paramount+ out there.

Finally, it was time for Garfield to jump in, and that part went off without a hitch. He thought his part in the evening was finished, only to find out later it was only the beginning, as he said:

I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels absolutely thrilled to know what was going on for The Social Network actor then. It was all so unexpected but undeniably mesmerizing to watch. And though the evening was exciting and fun enough, Garfield and his glasses are by far one of the main takeaways from the event.

Regardless if you saw Andrew Garfield’s viral glasses moment as ‘sexy’ or felt his ‘unbridled terror,’ it was one for the books. And, thankfully there’s plenty more of his professional projects to watch if you like AG and his killer acting abilities. Fans can re-watch last year's Golden Globes ceremony over on Paramount+.

It’s been a little over four years since Tom Holland last suited up as everyone's favorite wall crawler. Now, however he's currently deep into filming the fourth installment of his Spidey franchise. As of late, the Uncharted actor has been giving fans a bit of a look behind the curtain on the upcoming Marvel movie. With that, he just shared one way the film is paying homage to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s takes on the character, and boy is it cool. And I honestly can’t believe I missed this.

Tom Holland just gave fans a classy reason to zoom in on every stitch of his Brand New Day costume. Over on Complex Pop Culture’s Instagram, the account highlighted fresh quotes from its recent interview with theImpossible star that confirm what some fans have already been picking up on. Holland's new suit is a love letter to the Maguire and Garfield Spider-Man costumes. He told the outlet:

After the second and third look, I see how the upcoming Spider-Man flick is paying homage to its predecessor. Later in the same conversation, Holland spelled out the thinking behind the mash-up:

I recently wrote about what I hope Holland’s Spidey will learn from the Raimi-era films, but costume didn’t even cross my mind. However, if you’ve been tracking the on-set glimpses and official teases, the visual breadcrumbs line up. The raised webbing absolutely evokes Maguire’s vibe. Simultaneously, the sleeker black chest emblem and proportions nod toward Garfield’s suit, specifically, the near-perfect Web Head costume from The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

This absolutely is not an instance of copy-and-paste. Essentially, it's more so a tasteful blend of what came before, and that is a fantastic way to go.

What I love most is how the homage choice doubles as character work. Following the ending of No Way Home, Peter is operating without Stark tech, without his family and friends and without a safety net. Building a suit that carries DNA from his “big brothers” is such a beautiful little nod and way to honor the legacy of the chapters of the character before this MCU iteration.

The sentiment above definitely tracks with Holland’s recent comments about being more hands-on with this movie’s creative direction. Holland apparently dug into what fans responded to and shaped Peter’s next step with intention.

It’s clear Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is literally wearing his influences on his sleeve, and I’m so here for it. If, like me, you keep a calendar for all things new superhero movies, be aware that Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits the 2026 movie schedule on July 31 with production already in motion.

Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Silence. To many, it might seem like one of those movies doesn't belong. However, I'm here to tell you that they all belong, because they're all masterpieces from Martin Scorsese, including the latter.

Not too long ago, I questioned what Scorsese's best decade was. Even though I settled upon the ‘80s, I really considered putting the 2010s, since he had one hell of a ten year run. Well, in that decade, I feel like his crowning achievement wasn't The Wolf of Wall Street (or any Scorsese movie starring Leo), but rather 2016's Silence.

Based on the 1966 novel of the same name by Shuzaku Endo, Silence is one of my all-time favorite Scorsese movies. Here's why.

It's One Of Scorsese's Most Challenging Movies To Date…In A Good Way

Now, Scorsese is not what I would consider a “fun” director. What I mean is, he doesn't mix action movies with his serious work like Spielberg does (sometimes even within the same year). That said, I wouldn't say he's a director who regularly makes “deep” movies, either (like, he's no Tarkovsky making complex films like Stalker).

No, he just makes good (oftentimes great) movies. In other words, he doesn't typically make “challenging” films that most people find boring. But, sometimes he does, and Silence is one of those films.

Now, I know I just said it's “boring,” but I also said “most people.” The story is about two Portuguese Jesuit priests (played by Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who travel to ancient Japan to find their superior (Liam Neeson) who is believed to have given up the faith. However, once they arrive, they learn just how challenging it is to remain Christian, as Japan wants no part of it.

The priests are forced to either give up their faith, or suffer, and the “silence” is the non-response from God as his followers are tortured and killed in His name. Challenging stuff! Also slow, demanding-of-your-patience, stuff. Some might see this as a strike against it, but I feel it really rewards you if you're willing to see it through. It's masterful!

With Its Religious Angle, It Also Feels Like One Of Scorsese's Most Personal Films

My dad has a funny story. He attended Cardinal Hayes, which is an all-boys Catholic high school in the Bronx, and said that both Scorsese and Regis Philbin were alumni. But, while the school constantly brought up Philbin's name, he said they didn't say a peep about the filmmaker. It's almost as if (as my dad puts it), “They didn't want to associate with a guy who puts the F-word in everything.”

Now, I don't know if that's still the case (or even if it was entirely true back then), but that has always been the interesting thing about Scorsese. On one hand, he makes these violent gangster movies like Goodfellas (or, a superior gangster film like Casino - I said what I said). On the other hand, he makes deep, introspective films, some of which are based on the questioning of faith like The Last Temptation of Christ, Kundun, and yes, Silence.

Of the three I just mentioned, the last feels the most personal. Through Andrew Garfield's character, we almost get a sense that he's an avatar for Scorsese himself. He wants to believe, but it's often hard, or even impossible in a violent world.

Throughout the film, there are temptations for Garfield's character to denounce God, but his faith is just too foundational to him. Too baked in, and he suffers because of it. In that way, Silence feels like it's as much about the character's faith as it is Scorsese's.

Andrew Garfield Gives The Performance Of A Lifetime

Garfield can pretty much do it all (I mean, he's my favorite Spider-Man for a reason). However, I don't think he has ever had such a nuanced, revelatory performance as he had here.

In the film, he plays Sebastiao Rodrigues, a Catholic Jesuit priest who has his faith tested time and time again. Throughout the story, it's demanded of him to step on an image of Christ in denunciation of his faith. When he decides not to do it, others have to suffer in his stead, and he constantly wonders if it's selfish to keep the faith when others are being punished because of him.

You can see the torment written all over Garfield's face. Throughout the film, he watches people be tortured, and he feels like he's to blame. When he reaches out to God, he is met with silence until a crucial moment, when he finally feels he hears the voice of Jesus. This causes him to publicly disavow his faith, but you can tell in Garfield's expressions that he's holding onto his beliefs as closely as possible.

It's genuinely painful to watch. You can see that Rodrigues is caught between his faith and his morality, and none of it would work if Garfield couldn't showcase both in his performance. All of the acting in this film is phenomenal, but his talent truly stands out.

Japan Has Probably Never Looked So Beautiful…Or Punishing

I went to Japan last summer (it took me 26 hours and seven new-to-me movies, there and back!), and it was the experience of a lifetime. Japan is such a unique, wonderful country steeped in tradition and culture that there really is nothing else like it. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately, vacations cost money, so I guess I'll just have to settle with seeing the country in movies and TV shows. Now, Silence was actually filmed in Taiwan, but the 17th-century Japan presented here truly is beautiful…and yet incredibly punishing.

Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto really created a convincing, gorgeous Japan, and it almost feels like a character in itself. The crashing waves are tempestuous, almost like the emotions that are swirling in our Christian characters. Or, like the clash of belief systems that is presented here. The rural greenery feels both natural, but also alien, making us feel like our characters are trapped in an antagonistic paradise.

It's all of these conflicting elements that paint Japan as a beautiful, and yet uninviting place, and I really can't think of many other films where the setting just makes you feel the struggle of our protagonists, especially when it comes to a Scorsese movie.

That Ending Really Sticks With You

I love Scorsese's entire filmography, but, here's the thing. Even though I think he pretty much always sticks the landing, few of his movies actually have excellent final shots. For example, I can probably tell you how all of his best films end, but I'd have a hard time telling you the very last shot before the credits.

This isn't really a problem, per se, but a final shot can really burn itself into your memory for a lifetime. Like, I can remember Joe Pesci firing a gun at the camera at the end of Goodfellas, but I have a difficult time remembering the last shot in Scorsese's other movies. Except when it comes to Silence, which has such a potent final shot that I truly think it encapsulates the entire movie.

I won't spoil what happens since I want you to watch the movie for yourself, but I can tell you that when it ended, I just said, “Wow.” In fact I still frequently think about the film's final shot, and how much it impacted me as both a viewer, and as a Catholic.

It is generally agreed that Andrew Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man movies aren’t at the top of the franchise. However, it’s also generally agreed that this is not the fault of star Andrew Garfield. As a Spider-Man, he certainly has his fans, and those fans were quite excited to see him make a triumphant return in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Since then, there has been something of a campaign to see Garfield’s Peter Parker return, in either the Amazing Spider-Man 3 that we never saw or in some other project. For his part, Garfield admitted during the recent Middle East Film & Comic-Con (via ET) that he would love to play Spidey again, but only under specific conditions. Garfield said…

While actually making The Amazing Spider-Man 3 at this point seems unlikely, that ship has almost certainly sailed. It doesn’t sound like a project like that is what Andrew Garfield would want to do, even if the option were available to him. Instead, he’d like to do something a little “weird.”

It’s maybe not that surprising. Garfield has almost certainly already come to terms with his own franchise coming to an end, so he doesn’t need a new Amazing movie to exist. But with his character officially existing within the Marvel multiverse, there’s an opportunity to do something new or different with the character, and the actor seems quite up for that.

I think this sounds like a fantastic idea. As much as some people would love to just see Andrew Garfield play Peter Parker again, we already have an ongoing franchise of traditional live-action Spider-Man movies. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently filming. If we're going to continue to do something with Garfield's character, it needs to be different somehow.

Unfortunately, it may be too late for anything like this to come to pass. While I am all for seeing some Marvel multiverse movies that, like Fantastic Four, do something interesting with the concept, it seems likely that with the end of the Multiverse Saga in sight, there may not be much plan to anything of consequence with the concept after Secret Wars.

Of course, considering that Avengers: Doomsday is already bringing back some old superhero movie characters with the Fox X-Men actors returning, and it seems likely Secret Wars will do something similar, perhaps we could see Garfield back on screen as Spidey again. A movie like that could certainly do “weird” things with his character, so perhaps Garfield will get his wish.

Tom Holland is bad at spoilers. It’s become something of a joke whenever the actor goes on a press tour for a movie that you have to be careful and watch him because he’ll probably spill the beans. One assumes there are a lot of journalists who would love to interview Holland in hopes of being able to publish a major spoiler.

But apparently that’s exactly why the BBC’s Ali Plumb is Tom Holland’s favorite person to be interviewed by. The actor has said as much before, and when recently asked just why the Spider-Man actor feels that way, Plumb says it's because of the spoiler he didn’t pursue. Plumb said…

For the American audience to “dob him in” is essentially to snitch on somebody, and that’s what Plumb didn’t do when Tom Holland apparently inadvertently dropped the info that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire would actually be part of Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was the biggest rumor leading into the film, but everybody was clearly trying to keep it under wraps.

While most would follow up on whatever it was that Holland said, Ali Plumb did not. Instead, he just left the statement alone. It was only later that Plumb brought up what Tom Holland had said, with one of the actors whose appearance had been inadvertently revealed. Plumb continued…

The particular spoiler in question involved Tom Holland accidentally saying that he wasn’t on set during the day of Zendaya’s big fall stunt, which therefore indicated there was another Spider-Man in the movie. Check out the exchange

Andrew Garfield is certainly much better at lying, as Garfield flat-out denied appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home right up until the film’s release. Many actors try to talk around an answer in such a way that they’re not technically lying, but either way, there’s little argument that Tom Holland can’t do it.

The three Peter Parkers had great chemistry on screen, so why not give them another adventure together?

But given continued fan excitement over his role in No Way Home (especially Peter saving Zendaya's MJ like he failed to save Gwen), it's safe to say moviegoers would be thrilled regardless.

Sine we're in the midst of the Multiverse Saga, it feels like just about anything is possible narratively. Just look what we know about Avengers: Doomsday, namely the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is returning and playing Doctor Doom. Honestly, I’d love to see all three of them host something together, because the comedic stylings are on par with the hilarity of the Oscars' opening monologue this year. That being said, I think we can all agree that watching Andrew Garfield and Jesse Eisenberg palling around on the carpet for Vanity Fair’s Oscar Party eases the pain of that ancient wound. Which you can totally do whenever you need a break from such woes, below:

Winning teams like that are hard to come by, and the joy shown between Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield is as undeniable as that very fact.

Every upcoming Marvel movie is shrouded in secrecy, and revealing film details before the studio is ready is just about the worst thing that could happen. The most recent Spider-Man movie, No Way Home was one that Marvel and Sony tried to keep a lid on, but largely failed to keep the biggest surprises secret. However, it was only after the two of them arrived at the same restaurant that they realized that if the two of them were seen together, it would completely blow the whistle on the movie, not simply confirming Garfield’s appearance but Cox’s as well. One of the biggest what ifs of Andrew Garfield’s web-slinger era involves the lack of a Venom storyline. While Tobey Maguire’s version had his own black suit arc in Spider-Man 3, albeit not in one of the best live-action Spidey movies, the We Live in Time star never got the chance to explore that part of Peter Parker’s mythology. But Secret Wars could be the perfect place to give his character that moment finally. Besides, he and Maguire have both been rumored to return for a new Spider-Man flick, so it's not out of the question, I'd say.

Historically, the original 1984 Secret Wars comics are where Peter Parker first bonded with the black symbiote suit, unknowingly taking on the alien parasite that would later become Venom. With the MCU’s multiversal storyline expanding, there’s a real opportunity for Garfield’s Peter to experience this long-awaited transformation—perhaps even hinting at a darker turn before ultimately rejecting the suit.

And, if Secret Wars is meant to be the grand finale of the Multiverse Saga, there’s no better time to bring back the Under the Banner alum’s Spidey for one last epic battle.

Ever since No Way Home reignited love for the British actor's version of the character, fans have been loudly campaigning for Andrew Garfield to return to the MCU or Sony’s Spider-Verse. And with Joe and Anthony Russo's SW expected to be a game-changing crossover event with major significance for the ongoing Marvel timeline, bringing back the actor veteran performer would be a crowd-pleasing move for Marvel Studios.

It’s always fun to see when celebs are genuine friends with their co-stars off-screen, in a world where behind-the-scenes drama and celebs' complaints about each other can be so prevalent. And it doesn't hurt when those celebs include a boy band icon Justin Timberlake, his "Dick in a Box" cohort Andy Samberg, and then-future Spider-Man Andrew Garfield. Which is why I couldn't be more cheesed-out by a throwback clip making the rounds involving all three.

Posted to their Instagram, Access Hollywood shared a throwback clip of a Justin Timberlake and Andrew Garfield interview from when the two co-starred in 2010's The Social Network in 2010. In the clip, Timberlake was absolutely floored by the knowledge that Garfield would be the next big-screen Peter Parker. The initial interaction was funny enough, but it's when Timberlake asked about writing the theme song where the hilarious shout-out to Andy Samberg happened.

Despite being mentioned in jest, the idea is certainly as itriguing as it is amusing. Mainly because I had the mental image of the Amazing Spiderman end credits visuals but in the vein (no pun intended) of their classic SNL skit, ‘Dick in a Box.' That interview was back in 2010, after the point of Samberg’s botched concert with Timberlake.

More recently Samberg did do a sketch with Charli XCX that rivals his famous ‘Dick in a Box’ sketch, though it almost got more R-rated according to Samberg. As for Garfield, clips from The Social Network have been resurfacing and circulating the internet recently, and he's definitely aware of the Tik Tok trend tied to one of his famous lines from the Best Picture winner.

And of course, every time The Social Network is mentioned, let us not forget that people like me are still upset about Garfield not getting an Oscar nomination for his stellar performance. There are plenty of reasons why both he and Timberlake deserved recognition.

Overall, the clip had a similar energy to when I’m just goofing with my friends, it felt genuine and not forced or exaggerated for the camera. So, I guess that’s why it made me happy, more than just the SNL skit callout, it felt organic and that’s why it made me happy. Also, I didn’t know Timberlake was a big Spider-man fan and my respect for him has grown because of it.

Fans that spent years watching the Marvel movies in order will recall three different Peter Parkers who have swung onto the big screen as Spider-Man. Reports about what might have gone down in Amazing Spider-Man 3 have been trickling out in the years since it was cancelled, leaving moviegoers with some serious FOMO as a result. And while hardcore Marvel fans are still imagining potential plot points like The Sinister Six, it turns out that the writing process hadn't even begun when Sony pulled the plug on Garfield's third solo movie.

Based on the realistic MCU fan art, we see the Three Peter Parkers, but they’re not exactly in a warm embrace like in the bittersweet ending of No Way Home. They’re all interlocking arms with one Spider-Man ready to punch the other. This is based on rumors that @MyTimeToShineHello posted that the three Spider-Man will be “forced to face off” against each other, possibly in different factions to defend their universes. Considering the chemistry between Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire was aces to watch, I’d love to see the three of them reunite. I refuse to believe that No Way Home will be their last time together.

Instagram users were quick to comment about how they felt seeing The Three Peters battling it out in the spectacular fan art and who would win. The majority of people believe that Tobey Maguire’s Peter would be the winner which makes sense since he’s the earliest on-screen version of Spider-Man/Peter Parker. So that should mean he has more crime-fighting experience between the three as long as his back doesn’t give out.

However, othe fans theorize that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is most likely to win so his arc will continue. There were also a lot of Instagrammers who weren’t crazy about the idea of the web-slinging trio fighting since No Way Home showed what a great team they made. If this rumor ends up being true, I doubt the Marvel Multiverse Saga will end with the three being enemies compared to finishing with a high note.

What we know so far about Avengers: Secret Wars is that it will close off the Multiverse Saga, and it's speculated the movie will be based off the 2015 Secret Wars storyline rather than the one from the '80s. Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his new MCU role as Doctor Doom with a “new age of mutants” from X-Men, as well as The Fantastic Four: First Steps cast. Preceding Secret Wars will be two MCU films: Avengers: Doomsday where Tom Holland is expected to return, and Spider-Man 4. So if Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire really are coming back, I’d like to believe they’ll turn up in Spider-Man 4 for their bond to deepen before Secret Wars.

Seeing the Avengers: Secret Wars fan art of The Three Peters reuniting needs to become real. After seeing the brotherly companionship the trio had in No Way Home, we need that bond to continue in future movies. While Ryan Reynolds has made it clear he's not working on Deadpool 4 anytime soon, that doesn't mean that he won't be playing Deadpool again. While it would be a very different experience, perhaps he'd be down to reprise his role in the upcoming Avengers movies. As we steadily approach the release of Kraven The Hunter in theaters, fans of the world class hunter have been eager to see how he will be reflected on the big screen. But fans are more excited to see how this will play out in the long run, and whether or not this movie means that we will be seeing more of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. One fan on Instagram posted a cross-over that frankly I myself absolutely need.

Until recently, Kraven the hunter has not had a major on-screen appearance, though his spear was seen in the end credits of Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spiderman 2 as part of the Sinister Six schematics. This was because at the time there was a lot of set up for the Sinister Six to be the villains of the next movie, and if you know Spiderman you know Kraven is a member. Sadly, we did not get a third Amazing Spiderman, but fan Arifinity on Instagram posted art of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man with Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven. And seeing what we could possibly get, I just really want it to be reality.

For those who are not up to date with Spider-Man comic book villains, Kraven is a hunter who is always looking for his next big prey. The concept for Kraven is heavily inspired by Richard Connell’s short story The Most Dangerous Game, in which an experienced Russian hunter has switched from hunting animals to hunting man, because man is the most dangerous creature of all. In the comic books Kraven hunts Spider-Man, seeing him as optimal prey, and his whole drive is wanting to kill something stronger than him to prove he is the strongest. So I’m curious if the movie is going to paint him as an anti-hero as the trailers suggest.

And as already mentioned, Kraven as a character has not had any major screen appearances, so a full movie about him seemed to come out of nowhere. Though, if you’re like me who is a fan of Insomniac’s Spider-Man video game, we know that he was a pivotal villain in the second game released just last year. And now with this movie, as well as Andrew Garfield reprising his role as Peter Parker for Spider-Man: No Way Home, many fans are speculating we might be finally getting that Sinister Six movie but with a twist of multiverse shenanigans.

Recently the MCU has been dabbling with some of the side characters and villains from their properties. There was a Silver Sable and Black Cat movie in the works, that unfortunately fell through (as a Felicia Hardy fan I’m still malding about that one). And if Kraven The Hunter is in fact the first major step towards a Sinister Six movie as hinted, then I am all for it and I can’t wait for its release.

So, here’s the issue with this fan-cast. Young Lupin would be a teenager, and Andrew Garfield is 41. I don’t think he can pull off playing a teen anymore, and commenters on this TikTok agreed.

However, there’s a solution to this, he could just straight-up play the grown-up Lupin. Fans were quick to make that note as they replied to the TikTok with comments like:

That last point is a great one. When David Thewlis joined the Harry Potter cast in 2004 for Prisoner of Azkaban, he was 41 years old. His performance as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor is legendary, and he’s one of the reasons why the third Harry Potter movie is so beloved.

The energy he brought to the role as he played the complicated wizard and werewolf was emotional and layered. The vulnerability he showed as the professor who was still coming to terms with his ability while also trying to help his late friend’s son was brilliant. And I think Andrew Garfield could also handle this character’s complexities perfectly.

I can see The Social Network actor teaching a young Harry Potter how to cast a Patronus perfectly, and I love that the people of the internet can too. While he’s too old to play a younger version of the character now, he’s the perfect age to portray the Harry Potter character who heroically came through for the titular wizard time and time again.

The most-recent live-action Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, remains a miracle for so many reasons. It gave closure to Tom Holland’s MCU Spidey trilogy, then used its ending to set him off on a new path. It allowed Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to return to the franchise they helped to establish and grow, and even gave Garfield closure on one of the most emotional moments from any of the Spider-Man movies. For these and other reasons, I rank Spider-Man: No Way Home as one of the best live-action Spidey movies, and why it’ll always have a special place in my heart.

This scene, in particular, made me gasp as I sat in my seat on opening night. Zendaya’s character, Michelle, is thrown from the scaffolding of the Statue of Liberty. Tom Holland’s Spidey dives to save her, but is intercepted by the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe). Immediately. Garfield’s Peter Parker springs into action, and succeeds in a way that he previously failed. He catches MJ… and remembers how he dropped his own love, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) back in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The look on Andrew’s face when Zendaya asks if he’s OK shatters my soul. Because I know that deep down, he’s not OK. But that rescue makes him a little bit better.

He did Silence with Martin Scorsese, a film that we KNOW the director holds very dear. He was a revelation in Tick, Tick… Boom for Lin-Manuel Miranda, and he was Oscar nominated for that film, as well as Hacksaw Ridge. Phenomenal talent who, at 41, we expect to see incredible things from for decades to come.

So…We Live In Time came out as part of the 2024 movie schedule, and it broke me, but I mean that in an excellent way.

If you know me, you’d know I’m not the biggest lover of romance movies. Will I watch messy Love Is Blind seasons and maybe check out some of the best rom-coms ever? Sure, on a good day, but most of the time, I don’t get into them. I think a lot of the romance that I see on these reality shows is, obviously, way too dramatic, and then the ones in these movies are just so cliche. They are so unrealistic, and it’s hard to follow.

I understand that when people view these films, they look at them as some kind of escape, but sometimes I need a romance movie that feels real; one I connect to on a different level of emotion. If I’m going to take a break from viewing the best fantasy movies or binging the entire MCU franchise, I need something that’s going to make me hurt.

We Live In Time, starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, accomplished that and more. But personally, no matter how painful this film is at times (as anyone can tell from the trailers), we need way more of these love stories like this.

It’s An Honest Portrayal Of Modern-Day Love

This movie is the most accurate portrayal of a modern day relationship I have seen in a very long time. We can watch all the ‘reality shows’ that we want, but at the end of the day, those Netflix dating series or The Bachelor or whatever it is that you love to watch all manipulate footage and make things way more dramatic than they usually are. None of it is authentic, and the same goes for modern-day rom-coms.

Most obviously, there are the cliche moments, the stage meet-cute and so much more, and while those can be fun, when they are overdone, you start to get sick of them. 2hat makes We Live In Time stand out above the rest is that it really takes a look into modern day relationships and how they grow, evolve and change over time. It shows how they can really happen out of a chance meeting, not from a dating app or a blind date or any of that.

The way Tobias and Almut MEET in the film, without spoiling anything, is a chance encounter. There is literally no way their paths would have crossed if not for what happened to them. Maybe if they had both been on dating apps, there could have been a slight instance, but honestly, the way it happens makes it all the more real.

Love comes at you from out of nowhere, and this film is the perfect example of that. However, it also shows how feelings, values and morals change as the relationship progresses. As things become more serious, you start to bring up the tough conversations that bring on even more challenging conversations. This is real love, compromise, working together and so much more. It's truly beautiful.

It Takes A Look At Living In The Moment

As shown in the trailers, Tobias and Almut suffer through hard times because of health reasons. Again, without getting too deep into spoilers, there are some seriously hard moments in this movie that will hit a certain demographic because it dares to ask the question: if you had limited time, how would you spend it?

We Live In Time has many themes, but one of them is precisely what the title says – that you live in the moment. You learn to cherish every second that you have, no matter what. But there’s also the question of how you spend that time with your family, with your loved ones, the choices you’ve made to impact that time, and more.

It’s a hard concept to get past emotionally, especially if you yourself have experienced this sudden time clock or have lived with a person who has. But it’s a beautiful way to show that life, no matter what, is worth living in the moment, even during the tough instances that question how strong we truly are.

It Shows The Beauty Of Human Resilience In Hard Times

Something that We Live In Time does beautifully well is crafting the idea of human resilience.

Obviously we’ve seen resilience in so many different movies and TV shows. Jon Snow standing against a crowd of soldiers in the Battle of the Bastards in Game of Thrones; Elodie climbing her way up the mountain in Damsel refusing to die; Moana sailing across the ocean to rescue her island in Moana (which I’m sure will be a big theme of the upcoming Moana 2)—all of these are great examples.

But what makes We Live In Time’s moment of resilience so much more heart-wrenching is that there are no fantasy elements. There are no magic beasts or monsters or anything else that these characters have to fight. Their resilience is fighting against their own bodies and the clock of life.

That is something that literally all of us can relate to. Almut’s resilience to make her mark, to show her daughter that life is worth living and to still strive for perfection or as close to it even when you’re sick, is absolutely gut-punching. It also teaches us all a valuable lesson on the meaning of life – how we all must strive to overcomes our obstacles to become better versions of ourselves, even if the world feels like it’s falling apart.

It’s Painfully Real And Tells A Love Story Any Of Us Could Experience

This is the biggest reason as to why we need more love stories like We Live In Time. Again, without spoiling anything, this movie is painfully real. It takes an honest look at the lives we live, the people we allow into them, and how they affect us as we survive each day.

And it’s sad. And beautiful. And heartbreaking. And wonderful. And painful. That is the beauty of it all. That is why We Live In Time is so important.

I knew the moment A24 took this film that it would be great. A24’s best films are some of the most fantastic movies you can spend your time watching, and now, this film joins it. We Live In Time is a painfully honest love story that perfectly captures what it’s like to love and to lose, to have and to hold, to cherish and to grieve, and so much more.

It’s something that not only tells a story of romance but of familial love, of brotherly and sisterly love, of just affection and care in general. When a romance film is able to hit all aspects of that, you know it’s something special.

Look, rom-coms are great and good for a day for you to turn your brain off, but We Live In Time is exceptional. If we had more love stories like this, who knows, maybe the dating culture nowadays would be different. Perhaps the way we look at our relationships would be, too. But for now, I can at least be thankful that A24 made this film and that we’re lucky enough to live in this time where we get to experience it firsthand.

Others love the way their favorite looks in the suit. Me? I’m an Andrew Garfield guy. I think his passion for the character, for the source material, and for the fans elevates him. And if he had better material, he’d be remembered as the most iconic version of Spider-Man, no questions asked.

It is my opinion, however, that Andrew Garfield got the single most devastating scene in any of the Spider-Man movies to date, and that’s the death of Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Believe me, I know all the complaints about the over-stuffed Amazing Spider-Man 2. Hell, I wrote an entire book detailing the issues that went into that production. But there’s no taking away the impact of the death of Gwen Stacy, a seminal moment from the comics that they nailed in ASM 2, thanks to the contributions of everyone involved. Just rewatch this sequence. It’s a world-shattering event.

Because of the overwhelming secrecy behind the contents of the scene, I never got the chance to ask Andrew Garfield about it during press days. So when he stopped by CinemaBlend’s official ReelBlend podcast to discuss his winning romantic new film We Live in Time opposite Florence Pugh, I had to redirect the conversation briefly to Gwen’s death, and his memories about filming that scene. And Garfield was gracious enough to share with us his insights into the unforgettable sequence.

As Garfield remembered it:

There was no way that Andrew Garfield was being recast as Spider-Man at that point. He’d been the face of the franchise, having stepped in for Tobey Maguire after Sam Raimi ended his particular trilogy. And The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was meant to launch a new crop of films, including a Sinister Six movie.

Garfield wasn’t worried about the future plans of the Spider-Man franchise in the moment. He was concerned about getting this scene right. As he went on to tell ReelBlend:

Go back and rewatch the scene. It’s so brief, but you can see the moment where Garfield has to unlatch Stone from the webbing rig. There’s no way to avoid it. It’s the challenge of bringing comic-book reality to life on the screen. Once you master that, though, you are able to get down to the root of the scene. As Garfield tells ReelBlend:
