The world hasn’t really been the same since Betty White’s passing in 2021. As a Hollywood veteran and trailblazer, she seemed to work a solid balance between her expanding catalog of great shows and movies while having some of her iconic cheeky fun. Said fun was sometimes a lot bolder and raunchier. And Bones star David Boreanaz recalls a time when he was on the receiving end, while White appeared on the series. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t exactly co-worker friendly.

The 59-year-old was among the cast to appear at the inaugural Televerse Festival panel for Bones: 20th Anniversary Retrospective August 16. Fans have been long excited for any Bones revival updates leading up to this panel. But the true surprise came when Boreanaz shared with People initially meeting White during her first cameo in Season 11. He recalled that as ‘Ms.White’ started greeting everyone with her signature charm, as he said:

It’s wild to remember that the late actress was among Bones’ array of familiar faces but she was on twice as Dr. Beth Mayer (her second appearance was during Season 12). The sweet and hammy introductions seem pretty par for the Golden Girls star, filled to the brim with fun and smiles. I can only imagine many of her first days on sets went something like this.

But the initial greetings apparently shifted after the Brennan actress’ experience because things reportedly got more direct. The latter co-star of the show with 10+ Seasons says that Betty White’s first reaction to him was NSFW and based on his looks. In his words:

Leave it to the Queen of TV to lay it all out on the table! Though, per the article, Emily Deschanel stated she doesn’t remember the forward comments during that time frame. Whether or not the Dr. Mayer actress did, it’s not out of the realm of her humorous repertoire. Afterall, she’s got a point–the Angel star is a wave maker, including having influenced the Bones title change.

Also, looking at White’s larger than life crush-like habits, they’ve been showcased before on screen and off. From The Proposal actress’ make out with Bradley Cooper on Saturday Night Live as one of The Californians to Anthony Mackie's surprise flirtatious encounter while the two were at an event. All, of course, have been in good fun, and it seems like Boreanaz’s claim can join alongside his peers.

When they aren't catching up on upcoming 2025 movies, movie lovers are always keen to spend a moment appreciating the medium's past. With each year, Hollywood continues to showcase movie magic and the incredible stars who carry the story, but along with it comes some sad and unexpected goodbyes. Jimmy Stewart, arguably most well-known for the complex holiday tale It's a Wonderful Life, still managed to deliver a grandiose, hopeful message as an animated dog. Truly on par with George Bailey and the actor behind him, even in an animated sequel.

And as for Gable and Monroe, The Misfits was both of their last movies shot before they passed. The King of Hollywood’s matter-of-fact response to the Blonde Bombshell’s dark and mysterious question is almost too much. The small back and forth eerily suits both of their public personas as a femme fatale and the leading man all too well.

Along with the iconic but crew above, other greats’ parting sentences also hit as close to home as the heartbreakers above. The grouping of the next trio is lighter in their on-screen finales, but the lines themselves are still unexpectedly fitting in ways. The list includes the 007 actor who set the tone for the James Bond franchise, one of the most influential women for TV history and a recently deceased cult-favorite experimental director.

Lynch, as we know, has one hell of a body of work, but also took the time as a director to appear in another director's movie, The Fableman’s. And playing a legendary filmmaker in another filmmaker’s movie and being the wacky but loved filmmaker he is, no notes here.

Then, of course, to close the quick dive into these creative giants, none other than Betty White. Naturally, there are animals involved and an immaculately crafted joke reflecting death. A true comedy queen through and through.

Needless to say, the conversation and unearthing of beloved actors' on-screen last lines go deep. There are plenty more poignant words from top-tier celebs that span from Stewart’s era to Williams’ one and beyond. Just be ready for what you may find!

Ozzy And Sharon Osbourne - November 2, 2009

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne were inescapable in the 2000s, so it was only natural for the pair to host an episode of Monday Night Raw in November 2009. Their Raw’s Got Talent segment is without a doubt one of the worst things to ever happen on Raw, which is saying something.

Few Hollywood achieve the level of fame that Betty White earned during her time in the business. The late White, who passed away at 99 in 2022, was widely loved and came into contact with a number of other notable actors. One such person was Sally Struthers, the Emmy-winning actress famously known for playing Gloria Stivic on All in the Family. Struthers recently recalled her own encounter with White and not only did she say the experience wasn’t positive but she also claimed she was “fat-shamed” by White.

Sally Struthers, now 77, was recently a guest on Let's Talk About That! With Larry Saperstein and Jacob Bellotti. During the chat, the veteran actress discussed a myriad of topics, including her experiences in the business. While talking about her work with Bea Arthur, Struthers eventually discussed the fact that she used to live down the street from the house that was used for exterior shots on The Golden Girls. In the YouTube video, Gloria alum then turned her attention to Betty White and shared her assessment of the beloved star:

From there, the 9 to 5 alum recalled an instance in which she visited the Mary Tyler Moore alum’s house for professional purposes. It was during that time that Betty White allegedly made a remark about her colleague’s weight in front of other people:

It should be said that Betty White can’t defend herself or verify the claims made by Sally Struthers. Nevertheless, many of us can probably agree that, in general, criticizing someone over the body isn’t right. Much has been said about shaming of that kind, especially as it pertains to the entertainment industry. In 2024, Suite Life of Zack & Cody alum Kim Rhodes recalled being defended from a fat-shaming joke by then-child co-star Dylan Sprouse. Netflix also addressed fat-shaming backlash back in 2018 over the show Insatiable. All in all, many have expressed zero tolerance for such practices.

Like Getaway star, Betty White starred on some of the best sitcoms of all time. Her role as Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show is still revered, though it’s arguably her role as Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls that people know her for today. Interestingly enough, rumors have also swirled around White’s tenure on that show. It’s been alleged that she and co-star Bea Arthur feuded amid production. All in all, White’s life remains a topic of fascination.

Regardless of any criticism that may have been aimed at Sally Struthers, she remains a legend in her own right. The Norman Lear-developed All in the Family remains a pop culture staple and, aside from the other roles she’s played, Struthers continues to work today. She most recently co-starred on A Man on the Inside (which is streamable with a Netflix subscription). Struthers has accomplished a lot and, like any other star or general person, she’s certainly deserving of respect.

Since television began, women have been an important part of its history. This is a list of many of the groundbreaking women who have made their mark not only for themselves but for all women in the industry. Women like Lucille Ball, Barbara Walters, Mary Tyler Moore, and many more.

Lucille Ball

I Love Lucy has been one of the most enduring hits in the history of television. It's been on TV both in the first run when it first aired in 1951 and in reruns ever since. Almost the entire time TV has been in people's homes. Of course, that's all because of the brilliant Lucille Ball's performance as Lucy. She's a one-of-kind legend we're unlikely to see the likes of again.

Roxie Roker

Over the course of her incredible career, Roxie Roker broke new ground everywhere she acted, whether it be on the big screen, the Broadway stage, or, as Helen Willis on The Jeffersons, on television. The most important thing Roker did on TV seems so antiquated now that it's hard to believe, but when she was on a hit CBS show, she was actually the first Black actress to appear on a TV show in a relationship with a white man. It was a huge deal.

Carol Burnett

Not only is Carol Burnett one of the funniest women in TV history, but she's at or near the top of the list of the funniest people, period. Her eponymous show was a groundbreaking sketch comedy show and she not only paved the way for more female comedians to have their own show, she paved the way for enduring sketch comedy shows like Saturday Night Live

Betty White

There are few actors more beloved than Betty White. When she died just shy of her 100th birthday in 2021, the outpouring of grief from fans was incredible. It wasn't just for her roles on legendary shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Golden Girls, but for her whole career in television back to its earliest days.

Shonda Rhimes

Many of the women on this list are here for what they've done in front of the camera. Shonda Rhimes is here for what she does behind the scenes as one of the most prolific show creators of all time. Not only is she one of the first women to be so successful as a TV producer, but she's one of the first Black women to do it, making it doubly important and groundbreaking.

Ellen DeGeneres

It's obvious why Ellen DeGeneres is on this list, but that doesn't mean we should overlook the obvious. When DeGeneres came out as a lesbian on her sitcom in 1997 it was actually earthshattering. It shouldn't have been and today, something like that would hardly be blinked at and that's all because she had the guts to do it when she did.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag does something that few shows have done before it - it's an unflinching look at the life of a single woman and by doing that it, it automatically less of the cultural taboo it's been for far too long. It's weird that it's taken so long for something like this be a cultural stone, but at least we're here now.

Barbara Walters

In the TV news business, there is no more groundbreaking figure than the legendary Barbara Walters. As a news broadcaster, reporter, interviewer, and panel host, Walters did many things no woman before her had ever done. It's hard to downplay just how much of a trailblazer Walters was during her amazing career.

Marta Kauffman

As the producer and co-creator of Friends, Marta Kauffman showed the world that a woman could create what was, at the time, the biggest show in the world. It wasn't a show "for women," Friends was a show for everyone and few shows have seen the kind of popularity Friends had - and continues to have today with its endless life on streaming.

Mary Tyler Moore

Without The Mary Tyler Moore show, we might not have had other trailblazing shows like Murphy Brown, or Ellen, or Fleabag. Mary Tyler Moore did it first and, for many, still did it best. Before he blazed a trail on her own, she was also an early hero on The Dick Van Dyke Show. She truly made it on her own on TV.

Jane Curtain, Lorraine Newman, And Gilda Radner

It had to be hard for the three women in the original "Not Ready For Prime Time Players" on Saturday Night Live, Jane Curtain, Lorraine Newman, And Gilda Radner. The show felt like a frat house at times and there they were, consistently as funny or funnier than the frat bros that made up the rest of the amazing cast. Talk about groundbreaking.

Cicely Tyson

Cicely Tyson's first television role came in 1961 and her final appearance came just before her death in 2020. In between she starred in literally 100s of episodes of television and often was the first and only Black woman on those shows and episodes. There aren't enough words to explain how important she was for every Black woman who came after her on TV.

Peggy Charren

Activist Peggy Charren is different than most on this list. She wasn't an actress, nor did she even work in the television industry. Instead, she was an advocate for the children at home watching. It's because of the work of Charren that kids had the option to watch informative and educational TV, and not just corporate drivel made to sell more sugary cereal to them. Anyone who grew up loving Sesame Street or The Electric Company has Charren to thank, at least in large part.

Katie Couric

It's hard to believe that it took until 2006 for a major network to have a female lead anchor, but it's true. That woman was, of course, Katie Couric and for that alone, she should forever be remembered as a groundbreaker. She's done so much more as well, so it's not the only thing she'll be remembered and appreciated for.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Julia Louis-Dreyfus' career has been nothing short of spectacular. She is one of very few people, much less women, to have won more than 10 Emmy Awards, for her work on not one, not two, but three hit shows. Seinfeld, The Old Adventures of New Christine, and Veep have all been great in large part due to her talent and hard work.

Irna Phillips

On her Wikipedia page, Irna Phillips is described as a scriptwriter, screenwriter, casting agent, and actress. In reality, she kind of invented the entire genre of the soap opera in the 1940s, first on radio and later on TV. She was the first to really pinpoint women as a target audience and write and create shows geared towards them. Daytime TV would be very different if not for Phillips.

Diahann Carroll

Diahann Carroll isn't the most famous person on this list and that's kind of weird because her contribution to TV is huge. Her groundbreaking role as the lead in Julia showed that Black actors, especially Black women, could be a whole more than just maids or other stereotypical roles they typically played before Julia debuted in 1968.

Candice Bergen

Even before she blazed a new trail in Murphy Brown as the first woman on TV to express the desire to raise a child as a single mom, Candice Bergen was breaking ground on TV. She was the first female member of the SNL Five-Timers Club, for example. As the lead on Murphy Brown, she won so many Emmys (five) that she started declining invitations to give others a chance at the career boost a win provided.

Bea Arthur

Like her cast mates on Golden Girls, Bea Arthur was a true trailblazer. For starters, she is one of few women in Hollywood who served in the active military during World War II as a marine. Nichelle Nichols

Nichelle Nichols was the sole woman in the original Star Trek cast and she more than held her own. Not only was she an equal member of the Enterprise crew, she was an equal member of the cast. On the show, Nichols' character Uhura shared an on-screen with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) which was one of the first, and most famous example of an interracial kiss on network television. It seems simple, but it was incredibly groundbreaking at the time.

Donna Reed

There were plenty of family-focused sitcoms on 1950s television. What set The Donna Reed Show apart is evident by its name. It was one of the first shows that focused on the mother, played by Donna Reed, as the primary character of the show. This wasn't Father's Knows Best or My Three Sons. Reed was the star and the main character. Additionally, she was no mere wallflower. She was a strong, independent-minded mother and wife who had a full life as a homemaker and mother and audiences saw it all, not just June Cleaver doing the dishes while wearing her pearls.

Laverne Cox

Orange Is The New Black star Laverne Cox wasn't the first transgender woman on TV, but she was one of the most visible as part of such a huge hit. Cox, and her character were remarkable not only because she was was transgender but because her character Sophia dealt with problems that weren't just because she was transgender, but because she was also human locked up in prison. Sophia wasn't simply a one dimensional character, she was much more than her gender. That was, and still is, rare.

Jodie Whittaker

If she does nothing else in her career (and that is unlikely), Jodie Whittaker will forever be known for being the first female Doctor on Doctor Who. That alone makes her incredibly groundbreaking and worthy of inclusion on this list. There was even a time when critics and fans thought that such a thing would be impossible. Whittaker has been remarkably popular and has proven all the doubters wrong.

Marlo Thomas

Like many instances on this list, it's hard to believe that there was ever a time when it was shocking to even consider an entire television show focused on an unmarried woman. Of course, there was a time when that was true, but that was before Marlo Thomas starred in That Girl starting in 1968. The show, which was actually a little controversial at the time was all about Thomas' character moving to New York to try to make it in show business.

Debbie Allen

Debbie Allen is probably best known as the star of the TV version of Fame (and a small role as the same character in the movie), as well as a judge of So You Think You Can Dance. But Allen's accomplishments run so much deeper than that. She is one of the most prolific TV directors of the last few decades and was the choreographer for the Oscars for a decade. She's had an amazing career on both sides of the camera.

Kerry Washington

It's really hard to wrap one's head around the fact that between Julia, starring Diahann Carroll, which ended in 1971, and Scandal when it started in 2012 (created by Shonda Rhimes), there were no TV shows with a Black female lead. Kerry Washington changed all that when Scandal became a huge hit and ran for six seasons on ABC.

Lynda Carter

Who says girls can't be superheroes? Well, today we know all too well that women can not only be superheroes, but they can lead franchises as such. Back in the late '70s, that was an open question that was answered by Lynda Carter who helped turn Wonder Woman into a hit show that ran for three seasons and then became a staple of syndication for years after.

Sandra Oh

It seems like Sandra Oh has been around forever. She got her big break as part of the cast of Arliss on HBO, then found more fame as a member of the cast of Grey's Anatomy. Her groundbreaking moment came in the titular character in Killing Eve. When she did, she became the first woman of Asian descent to lead a show in the United States. Remarkably it took until 2018 for that to happen. Like all the other women on this is, she proved there are still trails to be blazed.

Pauline Frederick

Pauline Frederick was a groundbreaking female reporter with ABC and NBC during her career. She covered major events like World War II and the Vietnam War, first on radio and then as one of the first female reporters on TV.

Mary Kay Stearns

Like the TV network it was first broadcast on, The DuMont Network, Mary Kay Stearns, and her sitcom Mary Kay And Johnny has mostly been lost to time. Few people remember the show or the network and that's too bad, because both were groundbreaking. In fact, Mary Kay And Johnny was the very first sitcom ever aired on broadcast TV when it debuted in 1948. Mary Kay Stearns starred with her real-life husband Johnny Stearns and not only was it the first sitcom, but it was the first show to feature a pregnant woman and the first to show a married couple sleeping in the same bed.

Viola Davis

As an EGOT winner, Viola Davis has proven over and over what a powerhouse actor she is, no matter where it is. Whether on stage, in film, or on television, she is one of the best to ever do it.

Hollywood is a tough place to get your big break. Many actors struggle for years before they finally hit it big. These stars put in the effort and stuck with it until they finally became huge stars after they turned 40. Stars like Steve Carell, Kathy Bates, Alan Rickman, and many more actors like them are household names now, but it took them years to get there.

Steve Carell

Like so many other people Steve Carell started his career at Second City in Chicago. He then kicked around television for a while, with roles on the Dana Carvey Show and eventually at The Daily Show. It's when he left that show to head the cast in The Office that his career exploded and he became one of the most beloved stars on earth.

Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson has one of the most impressive resumes in Hollywood, but it took him a long time to get there. His first credit came in 1972 when he was 24, but it would take another two decades or so, after a series of smaller roles in the late '80s, that he would land the role of Jules Winfield in Pulp Fiction and have his career completely explode.

Alan Rickman

The late, great Alan Rickman started acting in theater in the mid-70s, finding regular roles throughout the early '80s. Then, in 1988, at age 42, he made his feature film debut in a little movie called Die Hard. To this day, Hans Gruber is a legendary villain. He would go on to star in dozens of movies, most notably the Harry Potter films, before passing away in 2016 at age 69.

Betty White

Though Betty White had a little success in her 30s with her eponymous TV show for NBC in the '50s and minor hit Life with Elizabeth in the same decade, it really wasn't until after her 40th birthday in 1962 that she really rose to big stardom. After her 50th birthday, she was cast in the Mary Tyler Moore Show, and after her 60th birthday, she teamed up with Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty in the role she's probably best known for today in Golden Girls.

Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman was born in 1937, but it would take almost 50 years for the legend to truly break out in film. After working here and there as a dancer and as a stage actor in the 1960s and '70s, he scored his breakout role in 1987's Street Smart, starring alongside Christopher Reeve. His performance earned him the first of his Oscar nominations and by 1989's Glory, Freeman was a bonafide star.

Bea Arthur

Like her Golden Girls co-star Betty White, major success came later for the great Bea Arthur. Though she was a steadily-working actor starting in the 1940s, it wasn't until she played the character Maude Findlay, first in All In The Family, then her own spinoff called Maude, that Arthur reached the heights of fame. She was nearly 50 at that point, but her star never faded after that.

Brian Dennehy

Brian Dennehy didn't set out to be an actor. After serving in the Marines and graduating from Columbia University in 1965 with a degree in history, he caught the theater bug and started working in regional theater. In 1983, after a few smaller roles, he scored his first big role as the sheriff in First Blood at age 45.

Kathryn Joosten

Kathryn Joosten is best known for playing the beloved Mrs. Landingham in The West Wing and like her character, her real-life story is truly inspiring. She spent the first half of her life first as a nurse, then as a stay-at-home mom, raising two kids. At the age of 42, after divorcing her husband, Joosten began working in local theater in her hometown of Chicago. At age 53, she moved to Orlando and became a performer at Disney World. Soon after she moved to Hollywood and started landing parts in TV. Amazing.

Kathy Bates

Though she made her film debut in 1970, it would be more than two decades later, after working in theater and in bit TV parts, before Kathy Bates would become a star. It was, of course, he now-legendary performance as Annie Wilkes in Misery that would vault her to stardom. Truly one of the best female villains in Hollywood history.

Bryan Cranston

Most people certainly think first of Breaking Bad when they hear the name Bryan Cranston and with good reason. Cranston was 52 when he first starred as Walter White. Of course, that wasn't his breakout role, which came eight years earlier when he starred as the dad in Malcolm In The Middle ]. While he has been acting in movies and TV for years, it was that role, after his 40th birthday, that really put him on the map.

Viola Davis

EGOT winner Viola Davis found success on the stage first, winning two Tonys before turning 40. In 2008, at age 43, she was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Doubt, but it was 2011's The Help, for which she was nominated for another Oscar, that vaulted her to superstardom.

Rodney Dangerfield

Rodney Dangerfield has one of the best stories of perseverance in Hollywood history. Though technically his career started in the 1930s, his stand-up was so bland that he eventually gave up and became a salesman. In the 1960s, he re-invented himself and his act and it was a hit, with some of the best one-liners of all time. Suddenly the guy that got no respect was getting respect by talking about how he got no respect! It wasn't until 1980, at almost age 60, that Dangerfield landed his first starring role in a movie, in Caddyshack.

John Mahoney

John Mahoney started his career as the "old guy" at the Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago. After years as an English teacher, the future Frasier star gave up his career and started acting in his late 30s. By the late 80s, well into his 40s, he was landing roles in movies like Say Anything... and Moonstruck.

Jane Lynch

It's easy to say that Glee was the project that really made Jane Lynch famous, but she got her big break before that when she found her way into the Christopher Quest universe, where she was responsible for some of the wittiest one-liners in Best In Show.

Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais took a roundabout way to comedic fame. He started in music, moved to radio, and eventually found his way onto the popular British show The 11 O'Clock Show. It was in 2001, however, at age 40 when he co-created and starred in The Office. The rest is well-known history.

Michael Emerson

Michael Emerson took the very long trail to fame, and his story is inspirational. He struggled for years as an actor, first in New York, then later in Florida where he taught acting as well. He stsarted landing work in the theater in the late '90s, but got his big break in a guest spot on The Practice in 2001. Of course, he's best known for playing Ben on Lost.

Peter Dinklage

Though he found steady work in the early '00s, Peter Dinklage really shot to superstardom when he was cast as Tyrion Lannister in Game Of Thrones when he was 42. Today, that character is still, and will likely always be, one of the most beloved in TV history. Tyrion also happens to the character who appeared in the most episodes of Game of Thrones.

Larry David

Larry David's career had a lot of ups and downs in the early years. His first major gig was as a writer on SNL, though he didn't find much success there. At age 42, in 1989, he co-wrote a TV pilot for what became Seinfeld and his career took off. On screen, after playing a few minor roles onSeinfeld, he found even more fame with HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Melissa McCarthy

While she did have some big supporting roles in her 30s in Gilmore Girls and Samantha Who?, Melissa McCarthy's career exploded when she started as Molly in Mike & Molly, in 2011, at age 41, she co-starred in Bridesmaids, where she completely stole the show, earning an Oscar nomination in the process.

Margo Martindale

Margo Martindale has become one of the best character actors in Hollywood, but it took her a long time to get there. She worked in community theater for years before she regularly started landing TV roles in her late 30s. After her 40th birthday, her career took off with dozens of memorable supporting roles in both film and TV.

Leslie Jones

Saturday Night Live is generally thought of as a young person's game. Most cast members join very early in their careers and by the time they are 30, they are moving on to other things. Leslie Jones is an exception to that. She didn't join the cast until she was nearly 50, but she made an immediate impact. Since leaving the show, she's continued to star in things like 2016's Ghostbusters and Coming 2 America in 2021.

Ty Burrell

Modern Family took the world by storm when it debuted in 2007 and one of the leads of the show, Ty Burrell, became a huge star. This came after years in Hollywood in supporting roles and, eventually, a starring role in the short-lived show Out of Practice. It was Modern Family that made him a household name.

Octavia Spencer

Octavia Spencer started landing bit parts and supporting roles in the mid-90s, but it was 2011's The Help that put the Academy Award-winner on the map, after her 40th birthday. Not only did she win for her role in The Help, but she's been nominated for others as well, including for her work in Hidden Figures and The Shape of Water.

Patrick Stewart

While Patrick Stewart steadily found work in the theater and in smaller supporting roles in TV and film, it wasn't until he was cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987 that he became a household name. He was 47 at the time and he's only gotten more famous as he's gotten older.

Billy Bob Thornton

Billy Bob Thornton basically made his own fortune in Hollywood after years of smaller supporting roles, he wrote, directed, and starred in Sling Blade. The movie was a low-budget masterpiece and he's been starring in big roles and winning awards ever since.

Hannah Waddingham

Many actors get their start in the theater, just like Hannah Waddingham. With a fantastic singing voice and wonderful acting chops, it makes sense that this is where Waddingham would first find success. It would take a couple of decades for her to equal that on screen with roles in shows like Game of Thrones, and, of course, her greatest claim to fame, Ted Lasso.

Richard Farnsworth

Without a doubt, the late Richard Farnsworth had one of the most incredible careers in Hollywood history. He had uncredited roles in some of the most famous Hollywood epics including Gone With The Wind, The Ten Commandments, and Spartacus. He didn't earn his first credited role until he was 46 in a movie called Texas Across the River in 1966. Then in the 1970s, he became a well-known character actor in projects like Roots, The Natural, and Misery.

F. Murray Abraham

After scoring a handful of supporting roles in movies in the 1970s, F. Murray Abraham became a household name after his Oscar-winning performance as Antonio Salieri in 1984's Amadeus. It was truly a career-making role and one that is still loved today by fans.

Liam Neeson

Liam Neeson was 41 when he starred in one of the greatest movies ever made, even if it's a movie you can only watch once. As Oscar Schindler in Schindler's List, Neeson immediately became world famous. It's safe to say that role will always keep him famous, too.

Lucille Ball

It's really hard to believe that Lucille Ball was over 40 when she became famous on I Love Lucy, but it's true. The comedian worked in show business for decades before she and her husband Desi Arnaz created the now-legendary TV show and her fame never faded for the rest of her life.

Like a lot of actors from Texas, Tommy Lee Jones does things his way. The Harvard grad worked for decades, even winning a Golden Globe and an Emmy before he truly found fame and became a leading man in the 90s with movies like The Fugitive and Under Siege.

Ken Jeong

it's not often that someone switches careers from medicine to drama, but that's exacting what Ken Jeong did. Though he always had a love of acting, he originally pursued a more traditional career as a doctor, while acting and doing standup on the side. By the mid-2000s he was earning enough to leave medicine behind, and in 2011, at age 40, he broke out in a huge way in the Hangover.

Cameron Diaz (Coca-Cola)

When Cameron Diaz was still a model primarily, one of her first experiences with acting – before making her feature debut in The Mask – was in a TV ad. The future Shrek movie star shines in an early '90s Coca-Cola commercial that feels a lot more like a perfume ad from the era in its alluring direction.

Paul Rudd (Super Nintendo)

All of Paul Rudd's versatile talents – from making us laugh in movies like The 40-Year-Old Virgin to thrilling us as Ant-Man in the Marvel movies – can be traced back to a Super Nintendo commercial he did in the early '90s. He plays a very enthusiastic video gamer who attracts a crowd when he, somehow, hooks up his console to a drive-in theater projector for the ultimate experience of playing The Legend of Zelda and other favorites.

Jennifer Lawrence (My Super Sweet 16)

Jennifer Lawrence got to be the original My Super Sweet 16 girl without appearing on the actual reality TV series that documented wealthy young women's extravagant birthday celebrations. MTV ran dramatized promos for the then-new show starring the future Academy Award winner and Hunger Games movie star as the birthday girl who encounters a few mishaps during her festivities.

Brad Pitt (Pringles)

Years before he starred in Super Bowl Heineken ad helmed by his Fight Club director, David Fincher, the then-up-and-coming Brad Pitt got a taste of commercial acting by starring in a 1988 Pringles spot. He plays one of three surfer dudes who become stranded on the side of a California road when a trio of lovely women approach them for an impromptu Pringles party.

Amy Adams (Commercial Federal Bank)

Mainstream audiences first became aware of Amy Adams' impeccable singing talent in 2007's Enchanted but customers at Commercial Federal Bank were really the first to discover her. In 1997, the multi-Oscar nominee starred as an Olvia Newton-John lookalike in a parody of 1978's Grease for the bank.

Steve Carell (Brown's Chicken)

Steve Carell's channeled his inner Michael Scott long before leading NBC's The Office cast when he was just starting out acting in commercials. In the early 1990s, he played a Brown's Chicken employee whose clumsy mistake while setting up a marquee advertising "cholesterol-free cooking" accidentally convinces customers the food will cost them nothing.

Drew Barrymore (Pillsbury)

It must have been clear to anyone who spotted Drew Barrymore in her early Pillsbury commercial that she was destined to capture our hearts in E.T. the Extra-terrestrial just a few years later. The 1979 ad stars the then-four-year-old as a little girl whose mother cheers her up on a rainy day by making chocolate chip cookies.

Leonardo DiCaprio (Bubble Yum)

Before breaking out with his supporting role in Growing Pains and really hitting big leading the Titanic cast, the up-and-coming Leonardo DiCaprio did a few commercials. One sees the future Oscar winner demonstrate his natural charisma while demonstrating the powerful flavor of Bubble Yum bubble gum.

Arnold Schwarzenegger (Alinamin V)

You may never be able to look at Arnold Schwarzenegger the same way again after witnessing the series of gobsmackingly bizarre ads the Terminator star filmed in Japan long after his big break. As the spokesperson for an energy drink called Alinamin V, the future California governor puts on a maniacally large smile and is sometimes seen riding the beverage's bottle into space or popping out of it like a genie.

Mila Kunis (Telephone Tammy)

Had Mila Kunis' Jackie Burkhart been a child of the '90s, Telephone Tammy – a doll who responds to your call with an included play phone – sounds like the kind of toy she would have grown up with. Not to mention the fact that the future That '70s Show cast member appeared in a commercial for Mattel when she was just starting out.

Morgan Freeman (Polaroid)

Future Academy Award winner and voice-over extraordinaire Morgan Freeman starred in a number of TV commercials early on in his career. One such ad was a 1970s spot for Polaroid, not as the man holding the camera that instantly prints out photos but the man telling the amateur photographer to cool it with the reshoots.

Britney Spears (Maull's)

Die-hard fans of pop superstar Britney Spears know that she started out as a child actor who worked with Ryan Gosling on The Mickey Mouse Club, among other rising stars. One of her earlier roles was a young girl who was apparently very excited to eat a home-cooked hamburger in a commercial for Maull's Barbecue Sauce, a local St. Louis brand.

Mark Hamill (Kodak)

Before playing Luke in the Star Wars movies made him familiar with technology from a galaxy far, far away, Mark Hamill represented what must have felt like a futuristic innovation at the time. He starred in a 1975 commercial for a Kodak camera that takes high-resolution photos from far away, allowing him to snap a shot of his girlfriend (and her mother) on a balcony while he stays on the ground.

Anne Hathaway (Better Homes And Gardens Real Estate)

Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway first showed her talent for performing in romantic dramas like One Day and The Idea of You in a 1996 commercial for Better Homes and Gardens. She plays a young woman who believes she and her boyfriend will still have time to spend before his family moves away until they learn the real estate agency has already sold the house.

J.K. Simmons (Farmers Insurance)

From his memorable roles in HBO's Oz and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies, J.K. Simmons was pretty well known by the time he was cast as Professor Nathaniel Burke of the University of Farmers for a long-running Farmers Insurance ad campaign. When he won his Oscar for Whiplash, host Neil Patrick Harris sang an impromptu parody of the company's commercial jingle.

Harrison Ford (Kirin)

Playing Han Solo in Star Wars and the title hero of the Indiana Jones movies made Harrison Ford an international star and one of the highest-grossing actors of all time. He would also increase his notoriety in Japan by starring in a series of commercials for a regional brand of lager called Kirin.

Keanu Reeves (Corn Flakes)

Before playing a master of kung fu in The Matrix, a master of gun-fu in the John Wick movies, and a master of excellency in the Bill & Ted movies, Keanu Reeves played a master of sneaking a bowl of cereal for himself. The role of a waiter who enjoys some of the breakfast food he has been hired to serve comes from an '80s-era ad for Kellogg's Corn Flakes.

Betty White (Snickers)

Snickers had a funny ad campaign starring well-known actors as metaphorical representations of the out-of-character behavior of hungry people. One of the earliest, and funniest, stars the legendary Betty White as a dude who needs a bite of the protein-loaded candy bar when his performance in a casual football game is off.

Bruce Willis (Seagram's Coolers)

When he was best known for Moonlighting and before starring in one of the all-time greatest action movies, Die Hard, Bruce Willis had another claim to fame: Seagram's Golden. He served as the adult beverage's spokesperson in a series of ads, some of which utilized his musical talents.

Jeff Goldblum (Apartments.com)

It's a little strange how a performer as widely recognized and beloved as Academy Award nominee Jeff Goldblum would be hired to star in an ongoing ad campaign as an original character and not just as himself. Nevertheless, the star of Jurassic Park and The Fly is dazzling and dazzling in the Apartments.com commercials as Brad Bellflower.

Sharon Stone (Finesse)

In the 1990s, films like Basic Instinct and her Academy Award-nominated role in director Martin Scorsese's Casino made Sharon Stone one of the most esteemed, and desirable, actors of her time. In the 1980s, her looks helped sell Finesse shampoo as one of the most desirable brands in the hair care market.

Jack Black (Pitfall)

It appears that Jack Black's charismatic, high-energy sense of humor was something he possessed from a young age. Exhibit A: his appearance in a 1982 commercial for Atari's Pitfall, as a wide-eyed child in a safari hat enthusiastically recalling his experience in the jungle-set video game, years before he played a jungle-set video game character in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

Sarah Michelle Gellar (Burger King)

No one would have believed, in 1983, that an adorable six-year-old girl who became a recurring spokesperson for Burger King would grow up to become one of the fiercest horror Scream Queens in the genre's history. Yet, that would become Sarah Michelle Gellar's destiny after leading the Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast as the titular defender against evil.

Tobey Maguire (Tropicana Twister)

In 1991, when he was still a teen, Tobey Maguire did an ad for a blended juice drink from Tropicana called Tropicana Twister. The future Spider-Man actor only briefly appears as a kid who breaks the fourth wall, suggesting that broccoli be added to the next unique flavor combination.

Courteney Cox (Tampax)

Before starring in the Friends cast as Monica Gellar, Courteney Cox was best known in the 1980s for dancing with Bruce Springsteen in the "Dancing in the Dark" video. However, did you catch the future Scream movies star's appearance in a Tampax ad as a gym patron?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Pop-Tarts)

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the most acclaimed former child stars who still act, with film and TV credits that back to the late '80s and early '90s like Angels in the Outfield and, of course, 3rd Rock from the Sun. If you go back even earlier than those classics, you can see the future Looper and Inception star in a 1991 ad for Kellogg's Pop-Tarts as a child who child urging his father to have breakfast before he leaves for work and offers him the toaster pastry.

Four-time Emmy winner and one-time Academy Award nominee Bryan Cranston has worn many faces throughout his career, from a hapless suburban dad in the Malcolm in the Middle cast to a ruthless drug lord as the lead of the Breaking Bad cast. Years before then, he wore the face of a spokesperson for Preparation H in a commercial from the early 1980s.

Willem Dafoe (Mercedes Benz)

With roles like one of the best Spider-Man movie villains, Green Goblin, and others, Willem Dafoe has proven time and time again that he plays an exceptional bad guy. Before he was defending the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the Avengers, Jeremy Renner made a living as a commercial actor. One of his greatest hits was a 90s-era Duracell ad in which he plays a tourist in Mexico whose stereo battery harnesses the power of a herd bulls.

John Travolta (U.S. Army)

Years before he played Santa in a Capital One ad and sent up his role in Grease for T-Mobile, John Travolta starred in an Army recruitment promo in 1973. Just four years later, his Academy Award-nominated lead role in Saturday Night Fever made him one of the biggest stars on the planet.

Even with the onset of streaming, many advertising executives would argue there’s still no better way to sell a product than through a widely seen TV commercial. It’s why spots at the Super Bowl still go for millions of dollars. There’s something about watching a live television commercial that works. The best ones have a way of sticking with you, sometimes even decades after you first saw them.

That’s what this list celebrates. We might all groan when commercial breaks are too long, but most of us also have a begrudging admiration for the best of the best. We mindlessly hum the catchiest jingles and chuckle to ourselves about the funniest commercials. Deep down, we respect a well put together sell and a great catchphrase. So, let’s look back on the best ones. These are the catchphrases everyone still remembers.

Like A Good Neighbor, State Farm Is There - State Farm

State Farm occasionally gets away from the iconic jingle, but the insurance giant always seems to come back, probably because it’s one of the best and most memorable advertising slogans in history. Written by a young Barry Manilow, who later went on to pop stardom, it just rolls right off the tongue and has been featured in numerous commercials, including one series in which singing the theme song conjures a State Farm employee who can help solve whatever problem they’re dealing with.

Be Like Mike - Gatorade

Gatorade’s beloved Be Like Mike commercial would have slapped no matter what when it was released, but the original timing was especially perfect. It dropped less than two months after Michael Jordan won his first NBA Championship, and it's easy to understand why the catchphrase immediately entered the pop culture lexicon. You might not be able to play like Mike, but you can certainly drink the same thing as him and also, sing this beloved jingle.

Just Do It - Nike

Arguably the greatest advertising slogan ever, Nike’s Just Do It has been regularly appearing in commercials since it first rolled out in the late '80s. In multiple languages, featuring numerous sports, hundreds of athletes and even a variety of tones, the commercials themselves are always different, but the ending always remains the same. Just Do It. 

I'm Lovin' It - McDonalds

The best thing about McDonalds’ I’m Lovin' It catchphrase is that it’s accompanied by that distinctive noise. That means the fast food burger giant has the option to do the bada-bah-bah-bah along with actually saying it or just have the sound at the end of the commercial; either way, everyone knows what's being referred to. It’s the best of both worlds and a testament to just how ingrained in pop culture the catchphrase is.

Get Allstate And Be Better Protected From Mayhem - All State

The structure of these hilarious commercials starring Dean Winters, a.k.a. 30 Rock’s Beeper King Dennis Duffy, is always the same. He looks into the camera and says “I’m a ______” and proceeds to act exactly like that type of person/animal/object/weather phenomenon, causing all kinds of carnage in the process. It’s a fantastic formula that has seen him portray everything from a cat to a teen girl to a parking gate to a beauty influencer. Now, as soon as he pops up on the screen, everyone knows weird and funny mayhem is about to ensue.

Bud-Weis-Er - Budweiser

I would have loved to be in the room when this was pitched. In one of those so-simple-it’s-extraordinarily-complex kind of things, Budweiser rolled out a mid-'90s Super Bowl commercial that featured three frogs sitting in a swamp. One says “bud.” One says “weis.” One says “er,” sometimes in the right order and sometimes not so much. It’s literally thirty seconds of that, and it’s still remembered as arguably the most famous Super Bowl commercial in history. 

How Many Licks - Tootsie Pop

Tootsie Pop dropped the first How Many Licks commercial all the way back in 1969, and it was so iconic that more than thirty years later, Lil' Kim referenced it in the title of a charting single. The premise of the original is simple. A little boy asks a series of animals how many licks it takes to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop. No one is quite sure, mostly because everyone bites into the center before licking their way there. This one still plays and slays on TV.

Real Men Of Genius - Bud Light

If you crank out more than two hundred commercials around a single concept or spend more than $30 million dollars a year on quick hit radio spots all with the same theme, you know you’ve stumbled onto something genius. Bud Light did both in the late '90s with its Real Men Of Genius spots. Each one features the lead singer of Survivor celebrating under-appreciated men such as bad toupee wearers and wrestling costume designers. At one point, they got so popular that Anheuser-Busch released the best ones on CD and put together a stand-up tour. 

Betcha Can’t Eat Just One - Lay’s

If you want to know how long Lay’s has been crushing with its Betcha Can’t Eat Just One slogan, here’s a fun fact. The catchphrase was made popular in a series of commercials and print ads featuring Bert Lahr, who played The Cowardly Lion in The Wizard Of Oz and was born in the 1800s. His funny bits, often featuring elaborate disguises, were a huge hit in the 1960s, but updated versions have also connected with new generations.

Once You Pop, You Can’t Stop - Pringles

Once You Pop, You Can’t Stop was rolled out by Pringles in the mid '90s in a series of commercials that exploded with mid-90s energy. From vibrant colors to rollerblading to weird dancing, they had everything you’d expect from that era. More importantly, the catchphrase stuck, helped in part by the distinctive cylindrical tube the chips came in that felt so different from other snack options and really helped sell the whole experience. 

He Likes It, Hey Mikey! - Life Cereal

Most of the commercial catchphrases on this list have been repeated in subsequent ads. Once people liked the first one, they shot a ton of subsequent versions featuring the same premise but different specifics to keep them fresh. Not this one, or at least not for awhile. The OG featured a hard to please little boy named Mikey whose older brothers make him try a new cereal that seems too healthy. To their shock, he enjoys it, leading one of them to shout “He likes it! Hey Mikey!” The ad was so popular it ran for twelve years and an update wasn’t shot until the original actor was in college.

This Bud’s For You - Budweiser

Budweiser and its army of products have cranked out tons of commercials and tons of catchphrases over the years. Quite a few are even on this list, but there’s nothing as simplistically perfect as the catchphrase This Bud’s For You. Whether it’s literally said out loud, just appears in text, or comes in the form of a catchy song, it’s clean, simple and immediately identifiable with the King Of Beers.

Not Happy, Jan - Australian Yellow Pages

The United States isn’t the only country where advertising catchphrases enter the cultural lexicon. In 2000, the Yellow Pages in Australia rolled out a commercial in which a business manager asks one of her employees (Jan) where the ad she was supposed to place in the yellow pages is. Rather than confess she didn’t do it, Jan simply runs away, leading the boss to shout “Not Happy, Jan!” There’s something about her vocal inflection that’s just perfect, and to this day, “Not Happy, Jan” is still used in Australia.

I Don’t Always Drink Beer, But When I Do, I Prefer Dos Equis - Dos Equis

Dos Equis struck liquid gold in the mid 2000s with a series of commercials featuring The Most Interesting Man In The World. Each one featured character actor Jonathan Goldsmith participating in a series of wild adventures, narrated by Will Lyman. At the end, he would say, “I don’t always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.” They were always funny and almost felt like they were casually endorsing the product in an off-handed way, which made it feel really cool. The commercials ran for more than a decade.

Where’s The Beef? - Wendy’s

You know an advertising slogan has really made it when people start using it outside the context of the original ad. That’s what happened to "Where’s The Beef?" in the 1980s when it became a euphemism for anything that lacked substance or didn’t fulfill its promise. Given its almost immediate overexposure, Wendy’s went in another direction with its advertising within just a few years, but not before it filmed a bunch of fun commercials, sold a ton of merchandise and helped convince Americans that its burger, which it modestly called a single, was bigger and beefier than the competitors. 

You’re Not You When You’re Hungry - Snickers

The best commercials are often funny but also have a central marketing message you can relate to, and these Snickers commercials checked both those boxes. In them, someone doing an everyday activity would be replaced by someone else, typically a celebrity, and they’d behave exactly as that celebrity would, even if it didn’t fit the context. So, for example, someone playing football would be replaced by Betty White and get criticized for moving like an elderly woman. Eventually, they’d bite into a Snickers and turn back into themselves because, as everyone can relate to, you’re not you when you’re hungry.

Taste The Rainbow - Skittles

Most of the commercials and their catchphrases on this list are going for humor or seeking to be relatable. Not these Skittles commercials. Featuring the catchphrase “Taste The Rainbow,” they try to be as weird as possible, depicting bizarre visuals like milking a giraffe or weird premises like transplants gone wrong. Sometimes they even pivot the catchphrase slightly to things like “harvest the rainbow” or “mob the rainbow” but always, the basic tone is the same. They’re creepy and memorable and unforgettably tied to Skittles.

Easy, Breezy, Beautiful. CoverGirl - CoverGirl 

CoverGirl has tried other marketing approaches and catchphrases over the years, but none have ever approached the iconic popularity of Easy, Breezy, Beautiful. CoverGirl. Some of the most popular followed the same formula and featured celebrities, styled in a bunch of different ways. They always looked like they were having the most fun, and they always ended with shots, often separated by quick cuts, that included them saying "Easy, Breezy, Beautiful. CoverGirl." 

Maybe She’s Born With It, Maybe It’s Maybelline - Maybelline

It’s not often an advertiser wants to inject so much doubt into their commercials, but that’s the entire idea behind Maybelline. Each time, we’re shown a woman, sometimes a celebrity and sometimes a random model, using make-up but it’s always subtle and blends so well that other people might not know she’s using it. The commercials always end with the iconic tagline, but often times it’s accompanied by music and expressed in very different styles and tones, depending on the mood the ad is trying to strike.

The Quicker Picker Upper - Bounty

You know what’s an advertiser’s dream? Finding a short catchphrase that rolls off the tongue and simultaneously describes what the product is and what it does. That’s the dream scenario Bounty is in, as The Quicker Picker Upper is a perfect encapsulation of the product. That’s why the company has been rolling it out for decades in a variety of commercials, and it would be a shock if it ever went away from it.

Call JG Wentworth, 877-CASH-NOW - JG Wentworth

As a company, JG Wentworth has had a lot more struggles than most of those on the list. There have been multiple bankruptcies and various other problems, but decades later, people of a certain age have a very distinct recollection of their trademark commercials and the really on-the-nose catchphrase that went with each. More often than not, they featured opera singers telling the audience if they had a structured settlement and need cash now, they should "Call JG Wentworth, 877-Cash-Now." Something about the cadence of the words just worked, and it remains an earworm all these years later.

Take The Simon Challenge - Simon

I have very nostalgic memories for the Simon commercials, which often repeated the name of the game an awkward number of times, almost in the style of a back-up singer. Most famously, the structure used Take The Simon Challenge (SIMON) to the point where if said “take the Simon challenge” to most people who were kids in the '90s, they’d probably shout SIMON. Now that’s an effective advertisement.

A Diamond Is Forever - De Beers

Commonly sighted as the best advertising slogan of all-time, as well as the likely source of an inspiration for a James Bond movie, the ads, which started in print and radio, had a dramatic effect on how people viewed diamonds. They wedded the idea of a diamond with the idea of romance, and they helped turn diamond engagement rings into an expectation. The catchphrase has been seen in numerous commercials since, often accompanied simply by music and pleasing visuals.

A December To Remember - Lexus

There are plenty of books, albums and other advertisements that have used December To Remember over the years, but thanks to some super memorable commercials and giant bows, Lexus has swooped in and taken the catchphrase. The spots are simple in concept and typically feature someone being gifted a Lexus on Christmas morning and having an extremely touching reaction. Given the price tag, the ads clearly aren’t geared toward the middle class, but they work in both an aspirational way on most and seemingly a very direct way on the type of people who can afford to buy a Lexus for Christmas. 

Have It Your Way - Burger King

Burger King has churned out a lot of ads focusing on the sheer size of the Whooper, but it’s their Have It Your Way catchphrase that’s really stuck in the minds of most. For awhile, the company used a song that featured the slogan, but in more recent years, it’s been used as more of a tagline at the end because its message has become so ingrained that it doesn’t need to be expressed as loudly. For real, have you ever met a single person over the age of six that doesn’t know fast food places let you customize the ingredients? A substantial reason for that is Burger King and its successful catchphrase.

It’s Finger-Lickin’ Good - KFC

I’m a loud and proud anti-finger-lickin’ person. I was raised to use a napkin and a fork, but even I have to admit this catchphrase is fantastic. It perfectly conveys the idea of chicken so delicious you can’t control yourself, and it obviously works with consumers, given KFC has been using it in almost every single ad it has cranked out for decades, whether they feature the real Colonel Sanders, celebrity impersonator Colonels or other countries paying homage to the Colonel.

Two All-Beef Patties, Special Sauce, Lettuce, Cheese, Pickles, Onions And A Sesame Seed Bun - McDonald’s

I’m not normally a fan of catchphrases that are this long. In fact, it’s easily the longest on this entire list, but every rule is meant to be broken and every Big Mac is meant to be eaten. There’s just something about it that works. I don’t know how long the advertising agency played with what order to say the products in, but they found the exact right one, and the OG jingle just adds a perfect little sesame seed on top. Even decades later, it’s hard to find anyone of a certain age that couldn’t immediately tell you every ingredient in the Big Mac.

Don’t Leave Home Without It - American Express

Historically, American Express had pushed two different concepts in its advertising. First, it has pushed exclusivity with the line Membership Has Its Perks. I could have easily chosen to highlight that here, but instead, I’m going with Don’t Leave Home Without It, as I think that’s more closely tied to American Express. So many of its commercials, many that included celebrities, featured the person talking about what they needed the card for and then ending the bit with the iconic line, Don’t Leave Home Without It.

Because You’re Worth It - L’Oreal

The iconic catchphrase for L’Oreal was conceived as a pushback to most beauty advertisements at the time which were narrated by men. L’Oreal wanted to portray a woman making her own decisions and doing what was right for her hair. The commercials were an immediate hit, and the company has produced countless commercials and ads over the years using some version of the slogan. 

5-Dollar Footlong - Subway

This is how popular the 5-dollar footlong commercials were. More than a decade after the promotion ended, if you search Subway Footlong, one of the related questions still asks if they cost 5 dollars. That’s a testament to how catchy the song was and how completely the message resonated with its target audience. I was in college when the campaign first launched, and I had friends who would just say, “5 Dollar Footlong” in answering what restaurant to get dinner from.

Melts In Your Mouth, Not In Your Hands - M&Ms

I appreciate the M&Ms’ catchphrase because it’s almost an insult to other chocolate bars. It doesn’t directly reference them, but by merely pointing out where the chocolate melts, it’s implying other candy bars don’t offer that perk. Decades later, it’s still a selling point, which is why so many of the iconic candy brand’s commercials rolled with the slogan for so long, even adapting it to foreign country's like Finland's Melts In Your Mouth, Not In A Sauna.

Think Outside The Bun - Taco Bell

Taco Bell is good with slogans and catchphrases. For awhile, it ended its commercials with the phrase Open Late, which is exactly the type of information someone going to Taco Bell needs to know. Now, it rolls with Live Más, which feels uplifting but also makes me want Mexican food. For my burrito, though, the best of the bunch was Think Outside The Bun. What a classy and succinct way of telling people not to order cheeseburgers tonight without coming off as bossy. Brilliant.

As you can see, all of these slogans will likely stick in the pop culture consciousness for many more decades to come.

The Golden Girls is the television equivalent of comfort food (even Deadpool loves the show), but just because the classic NBC sitcom offers up plenty of "Thank You For Being a Friend" sweetness doesn't mean it's without spice. Our core four of Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan), Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur), Rose Nylund (Betty White) and Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty) were known to loveably fling around funny insults at each other throughout the show's seven seasons (though the actresses' real-life dynamic was reportedly more complicated). Here are some of our favorites. 

Jealousy is a very ugly thing, Dorothy. And so are you in anything backless! - Sophia

Mother-daughter duo Sophia and Dorothy had a very loving relationship on the iconic comedy series but that didn't mean that either of them ever shied away from poking fun at their family member. Case in point: Sophia's hilariously brutal burn from the Season 2 episode "Ladies of the Evening."

Can I ask a dumb question? - Rose. Better than anyone I know. - Dorothy

A sweet farm girl from St. Olaf Minnesota, Betty White's Rose Nylund was often portrayed as more sheltered and more naive than her roommates and was known for making goofy comments or sharing peculiar stories about her upbringing. Thus, many of the jokes aimed at the character focused on her intelligence or perceived lack thereof. 

My mistake. I thought since you look like Yoda you were also wise. - Blanche

You might think a Southern belle like Rue McClanahan's Blanche Devereaux would be all prim and proper, but Blanche could give it as good as she got it. After getting sassed by Sophia for her age ("Wake up and smell the coffee, ya fossil!"), Blanche retorted with an equally vicious and exceptionally funny comeback in the Season 6 ep "Snap Out of It." 

Dirk's nearly five years younger than I am. - Blanche. In what, Blanche, dog years? - Dorothy

Speaking of age jokes, there were loads of them in the Season 1 episode "Blanche And The Younger Man," which saw Ms. Devereaux lie about the age gap between her and her lover Dirk, a young aerobics instructor. However, Dorothy's canine-inspired quip was a standout. 

I think there’s a connection between your brain and wallpaper paste. - Sophia

For a tiny Italian woman, Sophia Petrillo is full not only of seemingly endless stories about the old country ("Picture it, Sicily!") but also razor-sharp slights and snubs. Dim-witted Rose is often the subject of Sophia's quick wit, as was the case with this sensationally sarcastic barb from the show's first season. 

Oh, blow it out your Tubenburbles! - Rose

Sweet Rose isn't as known for verbal slams as the rest of the titular ladies, but every once in a while, even she would partake in the show's signature jabs and jibes. In the Season 3 episode "Three on a Couch," the foursome seek out a professional therapist to help them with their bickering, during which Rose unleashes several choice words from her Norwegian heritage. 

I have a date. - Dorothy. With a man? - Blanche. No, Blanche, with a Venus fly trap! - Dorothy

A shameless flirt, Blanche was known for her numerous relationships with gentlemen throughout the course of The Golden Girls' seven seasons. Dorothy's love life, however, wasn't quite as prolific as that of her coquettish roommate, which the other characters frequently used as a running joke in the sitcom. 

Go to sleep, sweetheart. Pray for brains. - Dorothy

After the ladies' Miami home is robbed while they're at a Madonna concert in the Season 1 episode "Break In," Rose is still a bit unnerved following the burglary. However, that didn't save Ms. Nylund from being the butt of the jokes, with Dorothy canceling out a loving endearment with a laugh-worthy insult. 

No matter how bad things get, remember these sage words: You're old, you sag, get over it. - Sophia

As the oldest of the core four, Sophia is sought out by Blanche for advice when an upcoming birthday makes the latter feel a bit depressed over her age in the Season 6 ep "Snap Out of It." However, her sassy response may have Blanche thinking twice about coming to the elder woman for any words of wisdom in the future. 

Honey, that phony hair color won't wash out just because you got caught in the rain! - Blanche

Many jokes on the show played up Rose's role as the "dumb blonde" of the bunch, and this wisecrack from the Season 6 episode "The Bloom Is Off the Rose" is no exception. After Rose comes in from the rain crying after seeing a sad movie, Blanche jests that her friend is actually weepy because of a ruined dye job. 

Stanley, you’re one chromosome away from being a potato. - Dorothy

Dorothy had a tumultuous relationship with her ex-husband Stanley Zbornak (Herb Edelman), who had left her to marry a young flight attendant. Despite their estrangement, Stan made numerous appearances throughout the show, usually prompting a bitterly funny barb from Dorothy aimed at her freeloading former spouse. 

I know you don't get many dates, Dorothy, but stick with what you know. - Sophia

The Season 2 episode "Isn't It Romantic?" is a memorable edition of the show for its progressive-for-the-era depiction of Dorothy's good friend Jean (Lois Nettleton), who is a lesbian. When Dorothy asks her mother how she would react if she had a gay child, Sophia is wholeheartedly welcoming of the idea but still manages to sneak in a funny little dig at her single daughter. 

Rose, you must be confused. You come to me if you have problems with a man. You go to Dorothy if there's some grammar you need help with. - Blanche

In another crack aimed at Dorothy's love life (or lack thereof), Blanche reminds Rose about what areas of life her roommates are strongest in. For the perpetually boy-crazy Blanche, that's all things romance-related, which is emphatically not the case where Dorothy is concerned, she jokes. 

Why don't you just tell him that you don't know who he is? - Dorothy. And hurt an old friend? Boy, Dorothy, no wonder nobody likes you. - Rose

All four women had many love interests throughout the sitcom and in this Season 7 ep "Old Boyfriends," Rose funnily enough can't recall an old beau (Ken Berry) who claims that they dated back in high school. (Much to Blanche's shock, Rose reveals that she had 56 boyfriends her senior year alone!) When Dorothy suggests simply fessing up that Rose can't remember him, the latter offers up a very ironic insult in reply. 

May you put your dentures in upside down and chew your head off. - Sophia

Between Sophia and Dorothy, we already knew that wisecracking was strong in the Petrillo bloodline and that theory was further proven by the introduction of Sophia's similarly diminutive and sarcastic sister Angela Vecchio (Nancy Walker). A conversation between the two siblings was like a tennis volley of insults, and this match point from Sophia was no exception. But no matter how mean the name-calling, the sisters always reconciled.

You'll have to excuse my mother. She suffered a slight stroke a few years ago, which rendered her totally annoying. - Dorothy

Again, that classic Petrillo humor! There were several variations of Dorothy's "You have to excuse my mother" jokes over the years on The Golden Girls (Ex: "She suffered a stroke which left her, if I can be frank, a complete burden") but our favorite is from the fittingly titled Season 6 episode "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Sophia?"

Blanche, if your 21st birthday was 20 years ago, you'd only be 41 years old. - Rose. That's right! - Blanche. Gee, you look terrible for your age. - Rose

A lot of the humor in Rose's put-downs is just how joyfully she delivers them. And she's positively proud of this jibe, based on the running joke that Blanche lies about her real age. (Fun fact: Given that the "Mother's Day" episode reveals that Blanche was seventeen in 1949, she actually would have been 53 around the time that Rose dropped this dig.)

The woman keeps a chicken in her home, how normal can she be? - Dorothy. I kept a chicken in my home! - Rose. You see my point? - Dorothy

In the Season 2 episode "Long Day's Journey into Marinara," Dorothy offers a two-for-one clowning: the first, against Rose's friend who keeps a piano-playing chicken as a pet, and the second against Rose herself, who wants to babysit the bird. It's yet another example of the wild—literally!—upbringing that Rose had in St. Olaf. 

You're a furry little gnome, and we feed you too much! - Dorothy

Many of the jokes from Bea Arthur's Dorothy play up the petite stature of her mother Sophia—actress Estelle Getty was only 4 foot 11 inches, nearly a foot shorter than her 5-foot-10 onscreen daughter. In this Season 7 jest, she's basically comparing her tiny mom to a Gremlin. 

Rose, you're bringing down the curve for the whole country. - Dorothy

It's another one lobbed at the daffy Rose, but sometimes she says something so witless that a Dorothy dig is warranted! Funny proof: after Blanche revealed that her sister Charmaine called, which was surprising because the siblings weren't speaking, Rose innocently asked, "Then how'd you know it was her on the other end of the line?" 

You're not going to eat them, are you? - Rose. No, Rose. We're going to go to some dumb country and try to use them as money. - Dorothy

It's well-known that the gals liked to have a good gossip session over a few slices of cheesecake but in the Season 4 episode "The Days And Nights Of Sophia Petrillo," Rose admonishes her roommates when she finds double-fudge cookies in a cupboard after they had agreed not to keep the sweets in the house. Of course, Dorothy takes it as an opportunity to rib Rose. 

Oh Dorothy, a man called for you while you were out. - Rose. Finally, now we can break out that bottle of champagne we've been saving! - Sophia

Dorothy did actually have several suitors during The Golden Girls' seven-season run on NBC—she even marries Blanche's uncle, Lucas Hollingsworth (Leslie Nielsen), in the series finale—but you wouldn't know it based on the way Sophia always made fun of her daughter's relationship status. 

I'm just so embarrassed to be seen in this old thing. - Blanche. Don't worry Blanche, the dress covers most of it. - Sophia

Blanche would go to any length to impress a man and in the Season 7 episode "Mother Load," she can be seen sauntering around the house in a less-than-casual frock to tempt a local newscaster, Jerry Kennedy (Peter Graves). Leave it to Sophia, though, to take her down a peg by reminding Blanche of her age. 

Rose, have I given you any indication at all that I care? - Sophia

Scenes between Sophia and Rose were always a delicious mix of salty and sweet. This quote from the show's first season is much of the same, with the older Petrillo abruptly cutting one of Rose's infamously long-winded stories short ("When I was a little girl, one summer we had a terrible thunderstorm...").

I have to confess, I dabbled a little in poetry writing in high school - Dorothy. That's nothing to be ashamed of! A lot of tall girls who couldn't get dates wrote poetry in high school. - Rose

In the Season 2 ep "Big Daddy's Little Lady," Dorothy and Rose partner up to write some lyrics for the chance to win $10,000 in a songwriting contest. However, before they can put their musical skills to the test, Rose proves that she's got an ear for a good insult, poking fun at Dorothy's schoolgirl days. 

Terrific little figure, gorgeous hair, perfect skin. Just like looking in a mirror. - Blanche. Get some Windex! - Sophia

Blanche puts a lot of effort into how she looks and has a very strong sense of pride in her beauty. So when her young, pretty niece Lucy Warren (Hallie Todd) comes to visit the gals in Season 1, Blanche can't help but comment on the family resemblance. But, then, neither can Sophia!

Ned was sort of the town idiot. - Rose. When? On your days off? - Sophia

For a small town, St. Olaf, Minnesota sure packed in a whole lot of lore, which Rose proudly shares with her roommates, much to their chagrin. In Season 5's "Sisters and Other Strangers," Rose revealed that Olaf's town motto was "Better Ned than red," which prompted this classic Sophia zinger. 

But of course, my heroine doesn't look like you. This is a romantic novel, not science-fiction. - Blanche

In the Season 5 episode "Sick & Tired," Dorothy is dealing with chronic fatigue and goes to see several doctors to figure out what's wrong with her. Meanwhile, Blanche decides to become a novelist, but is suffering from writer's block. The two storylines come together when Blanche declares that Dorothy is looking sicker and sicker, like her book's heroine. 

Well, I'm here if you want to pick my brain. - Rose. Rose, honey. Maybe we should leave it alone and let it heal. - Dorothy

Rose's utter cluelessness is part of the charm of the character—and it's made even funnier by the mocking it regularly incites from her friends. Here's another instance of Dorothy hilariously trying to soften a savage response about Rose's dopiness with an endearment.  

Must you always be so cheerful, you empty-headed Mary Poppins knockoff? - Blanche

Yes, Rose's perpetual sunniness does get picked on quite a bit by the other women, which serves as the basis of this joke from Season 3. When Rose asks Dorothy if she's noticed that Blanche has been picking on her lately, Ms. Devereaux struts in with a perfectly timed shady comment. (Even better is Rose's response to Dorothy after: "Let me know if you notice anything!")

Strictly hypothetical, let's say a man wants to take you out on a date. - Sophia. Why is that hypothetical? - Dorothy. Check your calendar! - Sophia

Sophia and Dorothy were the epitome of the judgmental mother-daughter relationship. And speaking of relationships, Dorothy's mom always had something to say about her dating life, including this Season 6 episode “Wham, Bam, Thank You, Mammy,” in which Sophia tries matchmaking Dorothy with a variety of men.

Get back here, you deceitful little Sicilian gecko! - Dorothy

This Dorothy Zbornak zinger hits on many of the things she regularly teases her mother about, from her short stature to her old-school Italian heritage to her mischievous nature. In this case, Dorothy finds out that Sophia has been milking a sprained ankle injury simply because she likes hanging out with the nurse that Dorothy hired her. 

And yet, even with all of those traded barbs and blunt comments on The Golden Girls, it was always apparent that they all came from a place of love between Blanche, Dorothy, Rose, and Sophia. 

The Golden Girls is a classic TV sitcom and, even decades after its conclusion in 1992, it continues to be honored by everyone from Deadpool to the many who catch the reruns that continue to air. I love the series for the strong bond the four lead characters have despite their differences. Though I was shocked to learn that two stars were apparently engaged in some drama during its run. Betty White might've been Hollywood's biggest sweetheart to live north of 90, but Bea Arthur allegedly had a different opinion of her. 

Bea Arthur, who played Dorothy Zbornak during the show's seven seasons, notoriously called up a viewer who spoke negatively about The Golden Girls. That energy was reportedly present while she was making the show, too. TV writer Stan Zimmerman wrote in his book, The Girls: From Golden To Gilmore, that she felt a certain way about Rose Nylund actress Betty White. Check out the excerpt via People,  which shares Arthur's supposed thoughts about White: 

Betty White had some great episodes as Rose on The Golden Girls, and her character was often portrayed as aloof, gullible and delightful. Perhaps that's why the narrative of her being two-faced would be so hard to believe for some, though Bea Arthur might've known her better than most. It's interesting to hear, especially given that Arthur opted out of the show's usually forgotten spinoff, The Golden Palace.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show icon was held in high regard even before her time on The Golden Girls. Yet, based on what's written in this book, it would appear that the Maude star wasn't her biggest fan. Stan Zimmerman even went as far as to allege that Bea Arthur found her colleague to be "conniving" in real life:

The Golden Girls fan in me wants to believe that this is just classic cynicism akin to the mistrust that Dorothy is known for. Yet, obviously, we have to separate the artists from their art. And, at the end of the day, regardless if it was said or not, it's just the opinion of one person and doesn't necessarily make it a fact.

While I'm eager to learn more about Stan Zimmerman's book The Girls: From Golden To Gilmore, there is a part of me that feels uncomfortable learning these details. After all, the main cast -- which also included Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty -- have since passed on and are unable to say their piece. With that, we're left with the anecdotes from those who worked alongside them.

Hearing first-hand stories from their collaborators is interesting, but when it borders into scandalous territory, I tend to be wary of what's said. I guess, at the very least, what we may be able to derive from these comments is that Bea Arthur and Betty White had different personalities. While this information will remain in the back of my head, it won't negatively impact my enjoyment of the show (which can be binged with a Hulu subscription). 

Those who'd like to see the two stars at their comedic best can also check their local listings to see when the repeats of the beloved series are being broadcast. It's a sharp comedy that more than holds up today.

In the mid-90s his life went infamously went off the rails with substance abuse problems. When it looked like he'd thrown it all away, he cleaned up and his fame exploded as he became one of the highest-paid actors in the MCU.

Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda has had a few ups and downs in her career. After breaking out as a star in the '60s, she was later shunned by many for her notorious trip to North Vietnam during the war. She rebounded and starred in hits like 9 to 5 and On Golden Pond. In 1991, Fonda married Ted Turner and completely stepped back from acting. She didn't appear in anything at all until after their divorce in 2001, but roared back to prominence in the 21st Century. 

Rob Lowe

As a member of the "Brat Pack" in the 1980s, Rob Lowe was on top of the world. That all came crashing down when a videotape of Lowe in a compromising situation was leaked. His hard partying had caught up to him, and though he got sober in 1992, he would spend much of the decade playing smaller roles or in direct-to-video movies. In 1999 he landed the role of Sam Seaborn in The West Wing and was once again on top, where he's stayed ever since. 

John Travolta

In the late '70s, there was no bigger star than John Travolta. From Welcome Back, Kotter to Grease and Saturday Night Fever, Travolta was in some of the biggest pop culture touchstones of all time. Then the '80s came and his career hit a serious lull. While he was in the hit Look Who's Talking and its sequels, it was 1994's Pulp Fiction that vaulted Travolta back to the top. 

Natasha Lyonne

In the late '90s, Natasha Lyonne was one of a group of budding stars in American Pie and other movies like Slums Of Beverly Hills before health and addiction problems derailed her career. Thankfully for all of us she came out of those those stronger and has since starred in fantastic shows like Orange is the New Black and Russian Doll. 

Brendan Fraser

Brendan Fraser winning the Oscar for 2022 The Whale capped off one of the greatest comeback stories in Hollywood history. His work had all but completely dried up in the late '00s and 2010s, but his career has had the most incredible resurgence in the 2020s. 

Winona Ryder

Winona Ryder defined "movie star" for late Gen Xers in the '90s, but after her infamous arrest for shoplifting in 2001, her career nosedived and she didn't appear in a movie for about three years after. For the next decade or so, she worked steadily but didn't regain her star power from early in her career. That changed when she starred in Stranger Things, starting in 2016, and she once again became a huge star. 

Dave Chappelle

In 2003 Dave Chappelle debuted Chappelle's Show on Comedy Central and it became a massive hit. Despite the network throwing tens of millions of dollars at the comedian to keep the show going, he turned it down and walked away. Chappelle stayed away for most of the next decade before reviving his standup career, and while Chappelle continues to garner controversy, it's safe to say he's as big as ever. 

Betty White

When Betty White died in 2021 she was mourned by millions. The beloved actress had been a television star since the 1940s, but not all of those years were in the spotlight. After early success in the '50s in Life with Elizabeth and other sitcoms, White's career hit a lull for more than a decade. She returned to the big time with her role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the '70s, The Golden Girls in the '80s, and then later with Hot in Cleveland in the 2010s.

Ke Huy Quan

There is no more heartwarming story than that of Ke Huy Quan's resurgence. the actor, who first found fame as a child in The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, completely disappeared from Hollywood. For twenty years, he appeared in not one TV show or movie, before returning in 2021 with a role in Finding ʻOhana, and then winning an Oscar for his performance in 2022's Everything Everywhere All At Once. 

Michael Keaton

Michael Keaton was a controversial choice when he was cast as Batman in Tim Burton's Batman in 1989, but it shows just how famous he was at that time. After Batman Returns, Keaton's star faded and he starred in a run of films to mixed reviews. In 2014 Keaton starred in the very meta Birdman, as a former superhero star looking to regain his fame. It worked, at least for Keaton. 

Katharine Hepburn

Anyone with a career as long as Katharine Hepburn's is bound to have some slow periods. The most amazing fact of the legendary actress' career was the 34-year span between Best Actress Oscars. She won in 1934 for Morning Glory and then again in 1968 and 1969 for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and The Lion in Winter, respectively. She would win her fourth 13 years later in 1982 for On Golden Pond. 

Mickey Rourke

In the 1980s Mickey Rourke starred in a string of hits. Eventually, though, his reputation as being difficult to work with overshadowed his performances and he was left in the Hollywood wilderness until triumphantly returning to his past glory in 2008 with The Wrestler.

Sidney Poitier

Sidney Poitier was one of the biggest stars of the '50s, '60s, and '70s. Then came the '80s, when he stepped away from acting and concentrated on directing, to mixed reviews. In 1988 he turned back to acting and had a wonderful late career resurgence with films like Shoot To Kill and Sneakers. 

Jason Bateman

In the 1980s it looked like Jason Bateman was a surefire bet to be a huge star. Then the '90s came and his career pretty much dried up. He had some guest spots on TV shows, but little else. He was all but forgotten. In 2003, Fox debut a show you may have heard of, Arrested Development, with Bateman as the star, and he's been huge ever since. 

Keanu Reeves

It's hard to remember a time when Keanu Reeves wasn't one of the biggest stars in the world, but after his success in the '90s and early '00s with The Matrix and Speed and more, he starred in a slew of commercial and critical failures. Thankfully for Reeves fans everywhere, John Wick came along and Reeves was back on top of the mountain, where he still is. 

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore almost became a Hollywood child star casualty after her string of hits as a kid in the 1980s. She had a rough childhood that led to substance abuse problems as a teenager. Against the odds, she got through it all and became an even bigger star on the other end. 

Neil Patrick Harris

Neil Patrick Harris first got famous as a child prodigy playing a prodigy on Doogie Howser, MD. After the sitcom ended in 1993, he struggled to regain that popularity. That is, until he played a fictionalized version of himself in Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle in 2004. Soon after he landed the role he's best known for, Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother. 

Matthew McConaughey

Most of Matthew McConaughey's early career was made up of starring roles in rom-coms. In 2009 the Lincoln Lawyer star took a two-year acting hiatus to re-evaluate his career. He emerged in 2011 by taking on more serious roles and leaving his rom-com leading man reputation behind. Since the so-called "McConaissance," McConaughey's become on of the most acclaimed actors of the 21st century. 

Nicolas Cage

By 2009 Cage was one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood, and one of the highest-paid actors in the business, but it seems he couldn't curb his spending and ended up in debt to the IRS and other creditors. As a result, Cage seemingly took every job offered to him, and he put out an immense catalog of straight-to-video movies that few people have ever watched. Finally, in 2022, Cage revealed he was finally debt-free and started being more selective with his roles. this led to acclaimed roles in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and 2023's Dream Scenario.

Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore's career started like a comet as a singer in the late '90s which she parlayed into an acting career. That career slowed way down in the early 2010s, only to be revived in a massive way with her starring role on the NBC hit This Is Us. 

Christian Slater

With starring roles in Heathers, Pump Up The Volume, and Gleaming The Cube, Christian Slater became a Gen X icon. He scored a number of high-profile roles in big-budget movies in the '90s, before work started drying up in the early 2000s. He returned to Hollywood prominence with his award-winning role in Mr. Robot and has maintained it ever since. 

Luke Perry

Luke Perry was one of the biggest television stars of the 1990s as part of the cast of Beverly Hills, 90210. After the show ended though, his star faded some. That is, until he was cast in the CW's Riverdale and he was discovered by a whole new generation of fans. Tragically, Perry died in 2019 at age 52. 

Christina Ricci

Childhood success for Christina Ricci didn't immediately translate to success as an adult. She's always worked steadily, but her fame never quite reached the heights of her early career in The Addams Family. That changed in 2021 with Showtime's Yellowjackets. 

Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh first found international fame with her roles in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies and Crouch Tiger, Hidden Dragon. She maintained a level of success, but she exploded to new heights with her Oscar-winning turn in 2022's Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. 

Neve Campbell

Neve Campbell was huge in the '90s with her starring role in the show Party Of Five and movies like The Craft and Wild Things. In the early 2000s, she starred in the Scream franchise, but hit a lull after that. Recently, she's been back on top with roles in The Lincoln Lawyer and Twisted Metal. 

Channing Tatum

Fans might not think that Channing Tatum has never had a career lull, but he has actually had a couple. He's always had to fight the idea that he's all looks and little substance (which is far from accurate), and that has affected his career at different points. He's always rebounded with strong performances like the one in Foxcatcher, however. 

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence's career hasn't really had a financial downturn, her lull was completely her choice. After a couple of poorly reviewed films and becoming the most famous victim of the iPhone hacking scandal, Lawrence stepped away from acting for two years in 2019. She triumphantly returned in the great movie Don't Look Up in 2021. 

Patrick Dempsey

Patrick Dempsey was first famous for starring in teen comedies like Loverboy and Can't Buy Me Love. He bounced around for a few years after that, working steadily but hardly a star. That changed in a big way when he landed the role of Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd in 2005 on Grey's Anatomy. 

Marlon Brando

The 1960s weren't kind to Marlon Brando. After establishing himself as a bonafide star and one of the finest actors of the 20th century in the '50s, his mercurial nature earned him a reputation as difficult to work with. A string of box office failures didn't help. Famously, he pushed hard to get the role of Vito Corleone in The Godfather, and wow, was that the right move! He won an Academy Award and reminded everyone how great an actor he was. 

David Carradine

Leave it to Quentin Tarantino to help revive a star's career like he did with John Travolta. David Carradine was huge in the 1970s as the star of Kung Fu, and while he always found work, it took until Kill Bill in 2003 that he found that same level of fame again. 

Kiefer Sutherland

After becoming one of the biggest teen idols of the '80s, Kiefer Sutherland spent most of the '90s in smaller, supporting roles. In 2001, however, he landed the role of Jack Bauer in 24 and it became the part he's most known for, becoming a television icon over the run of the show. 

Fame, as they say, is fleeting, and these actors prove there can always be a second act in Hollywood.

Sean Connery

Sean Connery, the iconic actor best known for playing James Bond in several of the best 007 movies, lived to the age of 90 years, two months, and six days before passing away on Halloween in 2020. Upon his death, the BBC said he left behind a tremendous body of work and a vacancy for the title of “Greatest Living Scot.”

Betty White 

Trailblazing comedian and cherished American treasure Betty White passed away on December 31, 2021, just a few weeks before the Golden Girls star and recurring guest on The Carol Burnett Show would have turned 100, per CNN. In her 99 years on the Earth, White lived life to the fullest to say the very least.

Carl Reiner

Carl Reiner, one of the most well-known and successful names in all of show business, lived to the age of 98 before dying in June 2020, leaving behind a massive body of work stretching decades, according to the New York Times. From creating shows like The Dick Van Dyke Show to a long-lasting partnership with Mel Brooks to stealing scenes in the Ocean’s movies, he had quite a legacy.

Cicely Tyson 

Cicely Tyson, the dynamic actress that won a Tony, multiple Emmys, an honorary Oscar, and dozens of other accolades, was 96 years old when she died in January 2021, according to the New York Times. Over the course of a seven-decade career, Tyson gave commanding performances in film, television, and on Broadway.

Tony Bennett

Though known mostly for his decades-long music career that saw him earn countless awards, honors, and other accolades, Tony Benett made several film and TV appearances throughout his life. Sadly, the legendary crooner passed away at the age of 98 in July 2023, per the New York Times.

Kirk Douglas

Kirk Douglas, the star of classics like Paths of Glory, The Bad and the Beautiful, and most famously, Spartacus, passed away in February 2020, per the New York Times. The Hollywood star lived to the age of 103. 

Mickey Rooney

One of the brilliant Hollywood stars lost in 2014, Mickey Rooney was 93 years old at the time of his death, which marked the end to one of the most prolific and tumultuous careers in all of show business, according to the New York Times. Throughout his 88-year career, Rooney appeared in more than 300 movies and reinvented himself time and time again.

Katharine Hepburn

Katharine Hepburn, who won a record four Academy Awards throughout her career, and was 96 years old at the time of her death in June 2003. At that time, the Washington Post described her as an actress of breathtaking talent and unsurpassed durability. 

Sidney Poitier 

Trailblazing actor Sidney Poitier, who became the first Black performer to win an Oscar for Best Actor, lived to the age of 94 years old before passing away in June 2022, per the New York Times. Throughout his career, Poitier appeared in films like Lillies of the Field, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and In the Heat of the Night to name only a few. Several of Poitier’s best movies could also be considered touchstones of American cinema.

Bob Hope

After spending decades entertaining millions upon millions with his various Broadway, radio, television, and movies, not to mention his tireless efforts bringing laughter to troops stationed around the world, Bob Hope passed away in July 2003. According to the Los Angeles Times, the later entertainer was 100 years old at the time of his passing.

Gloria Stuart

Gloria Stuart, the older Rose from James Cameron’s 1997 romantic epic, Titanic, passed away in July 2010. According to the Los Angeles Times, the veteran actress died just two days after her 100th birthday.

Zsa Zsa Gabor 

Hollywood legend Zsa Zsa Gabor, known for her work in For the First Time, Moulin Rouge, Lovely to Look At, We’re Not Married, and dozens upon dozens of other projects, passed away in December 2016. According to Variety, the actress, who dazzled on the silver screen for 60 years, was 99 years old at the time of her death.

Angela Lansbury

Angela Lansbury, best known for starring roles in Beauty and the Beast and Murder, She Wrote among others, was 96 years old at the time of her death in October 2022, according to the Guardian. Following her death, Lansbury’s legacy and influence was remembered by multiple celebrities, including Hugh Jackman, Josh Gad, and Judd Apatow.

George Burns 

After 93 years in show business, George Burns lived to be 100 before he passed away in March 1999. In his obituary published by the New York Times, Burns was described as a cigar-smoking comedian considered to be the best “straight man” in the world of comedy. Over the course of his decades-spanning career, Burns performed on TV, in sold out clubs and theaters, and pretty much anywhere else where audiences would watch his trademark routines.

Bob Barker 

Bob Barker, the longtime host of The Price is Right, Happy Gilmore star, and advocate for spaying and neutering your pets, lived to be 99 years old before he passed away in August 2023, per TMZ. The TV and Hollywood icon was just four months shy of his 100th birthday at the time of his death, a passing that was met with an emotional response from his fans. Dozens of celebrities took to social media in the wake of his passing to share stories about working with the iconic figure, including Adam Sandler with whom he had a funny ongoing feud.

Ed Asner 

Ed Asner, who starred on shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Roots, as well as movies like Up and Elf, was 91 at the time of his passing in August 2021, per The Hollywood Reporter. The late actor left behind a massive body of work and lasting legacy we’ll feel for years, if not decades, to come.

Doris Day

American actress and singer Doris Day passed away in May 2019 just weeks after her 97th birthday, per the New York Times. The star of Alfred Hitchcock thrillers (The Man Who Knew Too Much), all-time great romantic comedies (Pillow Talk), and her own sitcom (The Doris Day Show), Day was one of the most talented and prolific Hollywood stars of her time.

Billy Wilder

Billy Wilder, one of the most iconic and impactful directors in the history of Hollywood, lived to the age of 95 before passing away in March 2002, according to CNN. Known for movies like Some Like It Hot, Double Indemnity, Sabrina, and most famously, Sunset Boulevard, the late filmmaker gave moviegoers some of the most unforgettable moments throughout his career.

Harry Dean Stanton

Harry Dean Stanton, one of the greatest character actors of all time, passed away in September 2017, according to the New York Times. He was 91 years old at the time of his passing. Phyllis Diller

In her obituary published by the New York Times, Phyllis was credited with inspiring two generations of female comedians by breaking through doors, ceilings, and just about everything else to make her voice heard. She was 95 years old at the time of her passing.

Hal Holbrook

Hal Holbrook, who spent decades perfecting his craft in film, television, and his long-running one-man stage show about Mark Twain, lived to the age of 95, before passing away in February 2021, according to the New York Times. Throughout his career, he appeared in movies like All the President’s Men, Into the Wild, and Lincoln, to name just a few.

Ernest Borgnine

Ernest Borgnine lived to be 95 years of age, until his death in July 2012, per The Hollywood Reporter. The legendary actor appeared in countless film and television projects throughout his career and even won an Oscar for his performance in Delbert Mann’s 1955 romantic drama, Marty.

Maureen O'Hara

After spending a career dazzling audiences in movies like Miracle on 34th Street, How Green Was My Valley, and The Foxes of Harrow, Maureen O’Hara passed away in October 2014 when she was 95, according to USA Today.

Jerry Stiller

Jerry Stiller passed away in May 2020 -- the beloved comedian, Seinfeld star, and father of actor Ben Stiller was 92. Over the course of his legendary career in show business, Stiller found success with his wife, Anne Meara, appeared in movies like Hairspray and The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three, and did so much more, as covered in his New York Times obituary.

Stan Lee

Stan Lee, the man behind some of the most recognized and influential Marvel Comics characters, as well as a great cameo actor in several of the best Marvel movies, lived to be 95 years old before passing away in November 2018. Described by the New York Times as a man who revolutionized the comic book world, Lee’s impact continues to be felt today.

Joss Ackland 

Joss Ackland, who appeared in more than 100 movies and TV shows ranging from Lethal Weapon 2 to White Mischief, passed away in November 2023. According to the BBC, the legendary and prolific actor was 95 years old at the time of his death.

Hugh Hefner

Though he wasn’t an actor or director, Hugh Hefner was just as much a part of the Hollywood scene as anyone else throughout the second half of the 20th century and beyond, thanks to his groundbreaking Playboy publication. The party came to an end for the media trailblazer in September 2019 when he passed away at the age of 91. According to the New York Times, Hefner died at his longtime home, the Playboy Mansion.

While we are sad that some of these beloved Hollywood stars have passed away, we can take solace in knowing they all lived long and fulfilling lives, each having an incredible impact on the entertainment industry and culture as a whole. Five, ten, and even fifty years from now, it's hard to imagine a Hollywood, or world, where these icons aren't just as impactful as they are today.

With 2023 just over the horizon, bringing a smorgasbord of new and returning shows along with it, the chances of the Tanner family returning to the small screen aren’t overwhelmingly high. Between the tragic death of Bob Saget, co-star Candace Cameron Bure’s current duties at GAF (controversial as they may be), John Stamos’ various TV gigs and more, there just doesn’t seem to be the time or availability to make anything happen in the near future. But Jodie Sweetin has a pretty stellar idea for how to eventually bring the Tanners back to the small screen, and the late comedy queen Betty White would probably offer a giggly seal of approval for it. 

Speaking with E! News about the TV role that turned her into a household name through the decades that followed, Sweetin offered her proposal for how she’d want to return as Stephanie Tanner in the future, though possibly a bit deeper into the future than fans would expect. She’d like to catch up with the San Fran fam again when they’re in their golden years. In her words:

Jodie Sweetin would probably need to grow another few inches, while also pitching her voice deeper, in order to truly embrace her inner Bea Arthur. But it’s not like a second Full House continuation series would actually be a parody of Golden Girls or anything. Although I could actually see Andrea Barber’s Kimmy Gibbler slotting into the Sophia role, even if the age differences wouldn’t match up. Pretty sure we would need one or both of the Olsen twins to return as Michelle Tanner to make the female quartet whole, but that’s probably the least likely element to work out. 

While that particular idea is more of a random shot in the dark at how a return could work for these characters, Sweetin doesn’t actually know if such an idea is feasible. But while nothing is currently in the works, she reflected on how unlikely a Full House follow-up seemed in the years immediately following its conclusion, saying:

Jodie Sweetin will be 60 years old in another 20 years, which is slightly younger than three of the Golden Girls stars were when that show debuted. (Rue McClanahan was around 12 years younger than her co-stars.) So maybe don't set your 2042 calendars for the next Full House iteration just yet, but don't be wholly surprised if the Tanner family returns in some form.

Of course, that would probably mean the current backlash against Candace Cameron Bure over her GAF holiday movie comments regarding content focusing on "traditional marriages," which many have inferred as being a slight against the LGBTQ+ community, considering Bure left Hallmark Channel as it started becoming more inclusive with its programming. Sweetin herself has aligned with those speaking out against Bure, such as Holly Robinson Peete and JoJo Siwa, which reportedly led to Bure unfollowing Sweetin on social media. Will that be water under the bridge 20 years from now? 

All five seasons of Fuller House are available to stream with a Netflix subscription, while Full House’s eight-season run can be streamed in full with an HBO Max subscription. (Hulu is where the Golden Girls remain lively and thriving these days.) 

Betty White and Bob Saget both touched several generations of fans thanks to their comedy work, the former notably in Golden Girls  and The Mary Tyler Moore Show and the latter in Full House. So, of course, when both comedy icons passed away earlier this year there was much mourning from the fans, who have then expected to see these icons during In Memoriam tributes. Only both Betty White and Bob Saget have already been passed over at awards ceremonies this year. So why has this happened?

If you’ve been keeping tabs, you may already know Betty White was noticeably missing during the In Memoriam segment at the 2022 BAFTA Awards. She wasn’t alone. Peaky Blinders and Harry Potter actress Helen McCrory, who passed away in 2021, was also missing from the segment. Then, during the Oscars In Memoriam segment, Bob Saget was totally missing, as well, and that wasn’t even the end of the snubs for the actors. 

Let’s start with the BAFTAS. Betty White was in many movies and is famous for a role she portrayed in a comedy opposite Ryan Reynolds a decade ago. That comedy would be none other than The Proposal, a comedy that led to plenty of back-and-forth exchanges between the two stars over the years, including a pandemic era viral video. Yet she didn’t make the remembrance segment, though the BAFTA site, in this case, may give us a clue as to why:

So, apparently The Proposal star did not make that cut after the committee combed through such a large number of possibilities. Interestingly, Betty White did rank highly enough to make the In Memoriam segment during the 2022 Academy Awards tribute. In this case, however, a notable snub included Bob Saget.

Bob Saget is probably most known for his stand-up and work on Full House, but he is also famous for one movie in particular, though he appeared in others. He’s famous for helming the cult class Dirty Work, which starred and was written by another late comedic great: Norm MacDonald. So, even if he never landed an Oscars nod himself, one would think he might rank highly and be beloved enough to get his five seconds of airtime, but assumedly, the Oscars had a slew of names to think through as well. 

I bring Saget up also because more recently, the Full House actor was seemingly snubbed a second time at the 2022 Tony Awards. In the Tonys case, his pal and TV co-star John Stamos actually spoke out about the Bob Saget In Memoriam snub, particularly calling out some of the notable theatrical work his pal had done.

The Emmys are likely the prime space to pay tribute to TV icons. Those don’t air until September 12th of this year, yet given Betty White’s iconic role as Rose Nylund on Golden Girls and Bob Saget bringing Danny Tanner to life onscreen in both Full House and Fuller House, one would expect the fans to get to see “In Memorium” tributes for the two wonderful comedians then. The 74th Annual Emmy Awards will air on NBC a few days after the Creative Emmy Awards air on September 3rd and 4th. Nominations are coming up even sooner -- with a This is Us star already stirring up a plea for a co-star -- and will be announced on July 12. 

The universe got a little less right at the tail end of 2021, as comedy legend and all-around sweetheart Betty White passed away less than three weeks shy of her 100th birthday. Ever since, the Internet has been flooded with A+ clips from her long career, as well as untold numbers of memories shared by White's celeb friends. An abundance of both were featured in the primetime special Celebrating Betty White: America’s Golden Girl, which NBC aired in tribute a month after the icon’s death. In it, White’s flirtatious nature sparked part of the discussion, with Marvel star Anthony Mackie amusingly weighing in on a time when he thought she was hitting on him.

Although Betty White was never an official part of the MCU, one can only assume she would have wanted to take flight around New York City with Sam “Falcon” Wilson, at least after learning about Anthony Mackie introducing himself to the Golden Girls all-star. Here’s how he put it during the special: 

I think many of us would agree that Anthony Mackie does have a face that seems ripe for soft touches, so it’s not hard to understand why Betty White might have pulled such a move. It’s probably a bit more low-key than calling him “Toots” and smacking his bottom with a rolled up newspaper, as would be the stereotype had they met decades prior. (But as if they were their same ages, of course, and not as if White met Mackie when he was an infant.)

Betty White's knack for creating comedy out of supposed sexual chemistry has long been one of her many talents, and the NBC special showcased a few occasions when she spiced things up. In particular, her reactions to Jason Momoa will always be the stuff of legend.

But Momoa is a DCEU star, and we're talking about an MCU star at the moment. A short while after Anthony Mackie shared his tale, he offered a lighthearted follow-up, saying:

As one should. If only everyone was lucky enough to have such a memorable encounter with one of TV's brightest stars.

The Proposal gave Betty White her fourth wind as she flourished in the years following the rom-com’s success. While Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds were the stars, it was White who had everyone in awe on the set. Of course, being around the television legend would do that to anyone. But it was her actions during the hilarious stripping scene that amazed one co-star.

The infamous scene featured Oscar Nunez’s Ramone doing a funny but cringe-worthy striptease to Bullock’s Margaret Tate. Of course, the Golden Girls star was a huge part of the scene even egging on the cringe inappropriateness. As fun as the final scene is, it was one of the harder ones to film, according to Nunez. Long hours and multiple takes caused morale to wain for the cast except for White. The Proposal co-star recalled to Yahoo! how Betty White’s behavior turned into a life lesson.

As Nunez pointed out, White had more energy than her cast, who was less than half her age at the time. That stamina seemed to come from years of starring in iconic multi-cam sitcoms like Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls. Filming television required long hours on the set, so the Hot in Cleveland star was used to scenes taking time to film. In true Betty White fashion, she was able to keep up morale on The Proposal. Thankfully, her cheerful outlook helped to make an iconic scene from a beloved movie.

The Office alum was touched by White’s tenacity despite being in her 80s at the time. With any long shoot, the television legend wanted to go home, but she knew the sooner they finished the scene the higher her chances of making that happen. Sometimes you just grin and bear it, especially if your bed is calling your name. She was able to change Oscar Nunez’s mindset about completing the work without having an on-set meltdown.

Nunez was just the latest star to share a story about working with the belated TV icon. Of course, the world has continued to celebrate White as her documentary premiered on Jan. 17, which would’ve been her 100th birthday.

Fans around the world celebrated Betty White’s 100th birthday on January 17, despite the trailblazing actress’ passing just weeks before. Every day, in fact, since The Golden Girls actress died at age 99 on December 31, 2021, has been a celebration of the life, career and animal activism that White will be remembered for. Among the tributes from friends, family and fans, White’s assistant Kiersten Mikelas shared a photo and some touching words with fans on the day she would have celebrated 100 years.

Kiersten Mikelas shared some touching words about the television icon, along with a photo taken of White just five days before Christmas. In the Facebook post, Mikelas thanked Betty White's fans for the ways they were paying tribute to the longtime comedian on what would have been her 100th birthday. (You can view the photo here.)

In the photo, the Hollywood icon looked stunning in a green top and bright jacket. It’s heartwarming to see that in one of the last photos she took, her troublemaking smile was present and brighter than ever. Her fun sense of humor and refusal to take herself too seriously are part of the legacy that will prevail after her 90-plus years in entertainment. 

Many fans hoped to honor the late actress on her 100th birthday by continuing the work she'd had done as a lifelong animal activist. Many paid tribute to her by making a donation to an animal charity in her name. Even the Commerce Street Brewery — a pub located in Mineral Point, Wisconsin where Betty White’s late husband Allen Ludden was from — allowed patrons to buy beers for the actress, with the proceeds going to charity.

It was well-documented before how much of an impact the Hot in Cleveland alum had on the world, but it’s only been re-emphasized since her death through the shared memories and stories from her many co-stars. Bill Hader shared a sweet story of her making him laugh when she guest hosted Saturday Night Live; Don Cheadle remembered her for going above and beyond to help out on the set of The Golden Girls spinoff The Golden Palace; and we were reminded of her biting humor with the recirculation of an interview that showed the star and fellow legend Joan Rivers roasting each other. 

That’s just scratching the surface, as a number of her co-stars and friends had already planned to celebrate her milestone birthday on the big screen. Betty White: A Celebration was planned before the iconic actress’ death, with appearances by celebrities including Ryan Reynolds. Robert Redford, Carol Burnett, Morgan Freeman, Tina Fey, and Clint Eastwood. The documentary includes a thank you to fans from White herself.

Betty White definitely left a lasting mark on TV, as she delighted multiple generations of viewers with her legendary comedic chops.  Though she was best known for her roles on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Girls (and its spinoff), she's also remembered for her impeccable work as a host on Saturday Night Live. The late actress hosted the variety show in 2010, and it was definitely an episode to remember. Now, SNL alum Bill Hader has recalled a sweet exchange he had with White after one of the sketches. 

One of the best moments to come out of Betty White’s episode was the “Scared Straight” sketch, in which White and Kenan Thompson played a grandmother and grandson who attempt to steer some bullies straight. Though they attempt to do so by telling stories that are eerily similar to movies like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. In celebration of what would've been White's 100th birthday, Vanity Fair spoke with Saturday Night Live stars who worked on the beloved episode, including Bill Hader, who played one of the bullies. During the chat, he revealed the sweet and nostalgic words the actress gifted him:

At one point in the sketch, the It star's character noted that a story that was being told sounded like The Wizard of Oz. With that, Betty White and Kenan Thompson's character sat him back down in a chair, where White kept hitting him. Hader tried to keep his laughter in, but that's definitely a difficult task when working with such comedy experts. But White's words were definitely sweet and the fact that she compared the experience to the ones she'd have with her legendary collaborators is even more special:

Betty White, who appeared as host at the age of 88, became the oldest person to ever host the show. Following her death, NBC re-aired her episode from Mother’s Day weekend 2010. It was just one of many tributes that quickly poured in for the iconic actress. Many flooded the Internet with funny clips of White, whether they'd be from interviews with Joan Rivers, promotional videos or roast sessions at Sandra Bullock's expense. Needless to say, the actress lived quite a life.

When it came to the NBC staple, the star was also vocal behind the scenes. In 2020, SNL writer Mike O’Brien revealed that she rejected a unicorn sketch due to her manager not wanting any animals (the actress was a known animal activist). Though the segment never made it to air, things seemed to work out for the best, especially considering the other sketches on the episode were pretty hilarious as well.

It’s still hard to believe that Betty White is no longer with us, but fans can always honor her by watching her slew of movies and television appearances in her memory.

It’s not uncommon for varying celebrities to share birthdays. Marvel stars Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo celebrate on the same day. Steve Harvey and Betty White also shared the same birthday, with White hitting milestones that Harvey had said he also hopes to hit in the years to come. That birthday, January 17, falls this week, the newly dapper Steve Harvey looked back at the big day he shared with the star, who died just shy of her 100th birthday. 

Speaking on the Steve Harvey Morning Show in its 2022 return episode, Steve and the gang opened up about Betty White making it to 99 and Steve noted that the two shared the same birthday, with the Celebrity Family Feud host mentioning “she was just a few weeks away” from hitting the milestone century mark when the Golden Girls star passed away. In fact, she was just 17 days shy of her shared birthday when the news broke. While Harvey didn't get into his feelings beyond a general sad-about-her-passing vibe during the segment, this wasn't actually the first time Harvey has spoken out about sharing a birthday with Betty White. 

Back in 2018, on Betty White’s 96th birthday, Steve Harvey opened up on Steve Harvey  about their shared birthday on January 17th and how White always trends on that day while he doesn’t, though he also said she’s given him goals for his own aging future.

White’s sharpness in interviews was noted by comedians and actors like Ryan Reynolds and her fans alike. Things could be worse for Harvey than getting outshined on his birthday every year, however. In fact, Steve Harvey seemed a bit in awe of White and mentioned at the time that there’s something about getting up toward 100 that’s really special. In fact, during the episode of his daytime talk show, he mentioned that White had actually been around longer than sliced bread and many, many other innovations. 

It’s worth noting Betty White lived through myriad wars and changes in the TV landscape, including the notable time she defied the network's expectations and put a Black tap dancer, Arthur Duncan, on TV. Oh, and she also survived through the early days of COVID-19 and quarantine. She saw a lot during her time on earth and many, many paid tribute after her passing. 

There were plenty of ongoing plans to celebrate Betty White’s 100th prior to the announcement the actress and comedienne had died at 99 on December 31. She had a splashy magazine cover coming out. A TV special was planned and is still in the works, though now it will remember the star. And Harvey, for the first time in his soon-to-be 65 years, will celebrate a birthday without Betty White, though one would have to expect she’ll very much still be trending this year.  

The passing of Betty White brought about a celebration of the actress’ achievements, as well as many wanting to celebrate her greatest works. For me and many others, there’s little denying that White’s role as Rose on The Golden Girls remains one of her best roles ever. The series, in general, is packed with great episodes, though her Rose episodes tend to stand tall above the rest. 

For anyone hoping to revisit Betty White’s best moments as Rose in The Golden Girls, here’s a hand-crafted list of some of the definitive episodes for the character, and some of White’s best performances in the show. Some are happy, others sad, and some just plain goofy. I’m assuming anyone who watched the show assumed the latter, as few characters on television are as unintentionally funny as Rose Nylund.

“In A Bed Of Rose’s” - Season 1, Episode 15

Death is a natural part of life, and, apparently, if you’re trying to date in your senior years. Rose discovers a man she slept with the night before died in her bed, which gives her a complex, as her late husband, Charlie, died the same way. Rose contacts the man’s sister, only to find out his sister was actually his wife. 

The episode is full of laughs and actually earned Betty White an Emmy win. As for Rose, she eventually discovered that having two men die during sex was just a coincidence and not a recurring problem. Betty White's shining moment is her blunt announcement the man she slept with is dead, which gets me laughing every time.

“A Visit From Little Sven” -  Season 3, Episode 9

Rose’s cousin, Sven (Casey Sander), pays a visit to The Golden Girls, and it’s a cause for celebration. He’s in town for his arranged marriage in Miami, but there’s just a small hiccup in her cousin from St. Olaf’s plan. Sven falls hopelessly in love with Blanche, to the point that he’s willing to call off the wedding in order to be with her. 

Blanche is unwilling to break their relationship even though she only led Sven on to get back at her boyfriend, though she’s soon dumped by Sven after he meets his bride-to-be for the first time. Fans of The Golden Girls know most episodes that involve Rose’s hometown of St. Olaf are great, but this one shines for Betty White's Rose for her backhanded comments about Blanche and her powers of seduction. 

“Letter To Gorbachev” - Season 3, Episode 6

After seeing a picture drawn by one of her 8-year-old Sunshine cadets depicting nuclear war, Rose is determined to try and inspire hope for her girls' troupe. She writes a letter to President Reagan and Gorbachev about ending the Cold War, and the letter is so inspiring that the Russians send a representative to the house to ask Rose to read her letter. 

The Russian government is later embarrassed to learn the letter, which they assumed came from a little girl, was actually written by the much-older Rose. This episode allows Betty White to really show out with Rose's obliviousness, which makes the episode all the more hilarious. 

“Little Sister” - Season 4, Episode 21

The Golden Girls welcomes another member of the family to the fold when Rose’s sister Holly (Inga Swenson) comes to visit the town. Rose warns her friends that Holly is a “troublemaker,” but Dorothy, Blanche, and Sophia find themselves becoming fast friends with Holly. Rose later catches Holly with Blanche’s boyfriend and is forced to tattle on her sister to her friends. 

This is a great episode, in my opinion, because we get a rare look at Rose interacting with members of her family, and again, some insight into the unique way things are done in St. Olaf. Betty White doesn't get a lot of chances in the series to show Rose as legitimately angry, and this is one great example of when she got to show that Rose can be mean when she wants to. 

“You Gotta Have Hope” - Season 4, Episode 17

Dorothy is hard-up for a host for an upcoming charity event, but Rose has the perfect solution. She proudly tells Dorothy she can get famed entertainer Bob Hope for the event because that’s her father. Rose reveals that she spent the first eight years of her life in an orphanage, and that she legitimately believes Bob Hope to be her father. 

The ultimate mic drop moment is the arrival of Bob Hope, though it is revealed that he is not actually Rose’s dad. This episode is great for the cameo, and because The Golden Girls does a wonderful job of showing Rose’s optimism despite her hardships in life. Plus, Betty White does such a great job at selling the idea that Bob Hope is Rose's dad, you almost want to believe her. 

“Yokel Hero” - Season 4, Episode 4

Rose is bestowed one of her hometown’s highest honors and travels to town with the ladies to receive the award. It isn’t until later that they’re in town, however, that it’s revealed Blanche and Dorothy fudged some details on Rose’s original application and embellished a few truths in order to ensure she stands the best chance at winning. The end result is Rose winning the award in spite of much more qualified candidates, but hey, it’s a work of fiction. 

The Golden Girls goes to St. Olaf in this episode, so you know it’s gold. Betty White really sells it with stories about St. Olaf, and I'll never understand how she doesn't break character talking about it. 

“72 Hours” - Season 5, Episode 19

In one of The Golden Girls’ more serious episodes, Rose is floored when a hospital notifies her that a past blood transfusion could’ve resulted in her having HIV. Rose receives testing and must wait three days for the results. The episode is filled with Rose’s worry, as well as Sophia treating her differently because of the potential diagnosis. 

The episode is powerful as it serves as a reminder of the stigma associated with AIDS and ran at a time where many in the United States still carried those biases. Not all episodes of The Golden Girls are this heavy and informative, but this one stands out as one of the best. Betty White did a great job at handling the understandable fear of having HIV, as well as portraying Rose reaching an understanding about the disease by the episode's end. 

“Once, In St. Olaf” - Season 6, Episode 2

Sophia is sent to the hospital for hernia surgery and ends up in the same hospital ward that Rose volunteers in. Sophia ends up going missing, but that’s not really the big moment of this episode, as Rose has a chance encounter with a monk, who ends up being her biological father.

The monk explains how he met Rose’s mother, and how, obviously, one thing led to another and he got her pregnant. The other monks never found out about his transgression, but in exchange, Rose never actually met her biological father until that moment. The two reconcile and plan to keep in touch, as he hopes to make amends for the time he’s been away. This sounds like a heavy episode, but Betty White makes it great with Rose's typical compassion and understanding for others.

“It’s A Miserable Life” - Season 2,  Episode 4

The town rallies to attempt and save an old tree, but the homeowner who owns the tree, Mrs. Klaxton, wants it gone. The ladies try to reason with Klaxton and explain the importance of it, but she's unreasonable and unwilling to bend on her decision to have it destroyed. 

Rose, angered by the lack of compassion, tells Mrs. Klaxton to “drop dead” in a town hall meeting, and the woman does just that, leading to Rose feeling guilty about unintentionally killing the old woman. This episode is amazing because of Mrs. Klaxton’s death scene, and Betty White's reaction as Rose when it happens. It's sitcom television at its finest, in my opinion. 

The Golden Girls is available to stream on Hulu, for anyone hoping to see these Betty White episodes or others. There are plenty of other great episodes that don’t center around Rose, but still give the character some great moments to shine. 

Ahead of the New Year, we sadly learned the news of Betty White’s passing at age 99. White’s legacy remains unmatched in the halls of the entertainment industry, as well as in the hearts and minds of her fans and collaborators. In fact, one way the actress continues to live on is through a pub’s efforts – which she would surely see the hilarity in. Patrons at the establishment would buy beers in Betty White’s name for many years, and now the money is going toward a very sweet cause.

The pub, called the Commerce Street Brewery, is located in Mineral Point, Wisconsin, where Betty White’s late husband Allen Ludden was born and raised. In honor of the marital connection, NPR reports that the pub started up a tradition of patrons buying beers for the Golden Girls star (and even created a signature drink in her name) in an effort to draw her to the location. The running count of free beers waiting on White numbered 40-plus in 2019 and has hit more than 110 since her sudden death.

Obviously, the esteemed icon can no longer make the trek up to Mineral Point to down a hundred lagers. (Although, I would’ve paid good money to have seen it.) So, in lieu of her absence, the pub is dedicated to sending the (so far) $565 and counting worth of Betty White beers to local animal shelter(s) in her name. (White was a known-advocate for animals.) Proprietor Mike Zupke told the outlet,

Along with the Commerce Street Brewery’s sweet ode to Betty White, fans are also rallying elsewhere to honor the late star. Her former agent suggested in a statement sharing funeral details that fans donate to White’s favorite charities or a local animal shelter. On social media, it manifested in the growing #BettyWhiteChallenge which is seeing countless fans pledge donations to their local animal shelters on what would’ve been her 100th birthday on January 17.

In tandem, the outpouring of anecdotes and memories from Betty White’s co-workers continues to grow. (And it shows off the breadth of her work that impressively spans eight decades.) The list includes a That '70s Show alum, a Hot in Cleveland star, her Golden Girls spinoff show castmate Don Cheadle, and on and on and on. But what really got me was that fan tribute showcasing a Betty White/Joan Rivers roast-fest that went viral.

It is heartwarming to know that Betty White got her flowers both in life and in death. The Golden Girls (1985-1992)

If you’ve ever heard of Betty White, you probably know her from The Golden Girls, a hit sitcom that aired back in the eighties. This popular show follows four older women who were all divorced or widowed from their past husbands. Now, they live together, all under the same roof, with different hobbies and personalities that consistently clash and create hilarious situations. 

If we’re talking about what Betty White is probably known the most for, it’s this show. The Golden Girls is beloved by so many people for the sheer amount of heart and love that was poured into the show, mixed in with its hilarious stars, including Betty White. Her character of Rose, while naive, was such a breath of fresh air to the show and always offered jokes that would make anyone smile, which could only be delivered by Betty White. It’s a classic sitcom anyone would love, so give it a shot if you haven’t seen it.

The Lorax (2012)

Based on the Dr. Seuss novel of the same name, The Lorax takes place in a world that is devoid of anything real - everything is fake, and there’s no real nature anywhere. But when a young boy finds out that the girl of his dreams wishes she could see a real tree for the first time, he sets out on an adventure to find one for her.

Betty White voiced Grammy Norma, one of the eldest people living in their fake world and who has some idea of what the world was like before and knows about the Once-ler, and almost instantly you can hear the character she adds to The Lorax. While the film itself has great messages on the preservation of nature and the importance of learning to care for the Earth, her character always had her funny moments, creating great sequences that make this movie enjoyable to watch. It’s definitely a fun kids movies.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1973-1977)

Here, we have two legends working together. The Mary Tyler Moore Show was one of the first sitcoms to ever portray a woman who was independent and living her own life, and of course, Betty White was a part of it. Featuring the starring actress, Mary Tyler Moore, we follow Mary, a young, kind woman who is working towards a long-lasting career in a TV station in Minneapolis, working in a male-dominated field. 

Betty White played Sue Anne Nivens, and while White was already in the TV industry prior to her role in this show, this is one of her breakout roles. Sue was basically the total opposite of Mary, pretending to be the perfect housewife but behind the scenes, was quite the foul-mouthed woman with a thirst for competition. It’s amazing to see someone like Betty White, who is so cheerful, to play someone who is the complete opposite of her, and yet it works so well.

The Proposal (2009)

If you’re looking for a hilarious romantic comedy, check out The Proposal. In this film, starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock, an executive that hails from Canada is risking her life getting turned upside down when her visa is about to expire. So, in order to stay in the United States and not let all her work go to waste, she makes her assistant pretend to be her fiance - with hysterical results. 

In all of her years of working, I personally love this appearance from Betty White the most. Playing the grandmother of Andrew (the assistant), she whole-heartedly embraced Bullock’s character and offered hilarious scenes in support of the couple, even faking a heart attack near the end so that Andrew could go after the woman that he loved later on in the film. She was funny, sweet, and everything you would expect Betty White to be. You just had to love her in this movie.

Hot In Cleveland (2010-2015)

In this hilarious sitcom, Hot in Cleveland follows three best friends, all in their 40s, who are on a plane trip to Paris. But when their plan is forced to land in Cleveland, the three of them come to the realization that their lives back home aren’t as fulfilling, and decide to stick around in the city for now on and start a new life - where they’re considered hot still. 

Betty White plays Elka, the care-taker of the home that the three women are renting out, a sassy older woman who lives to make fun of people, enjoy life and drink plenty. Betty White was actually scheduled to just be in one episode, but her appearance was received so well, she was given a main role, and what a role that was. While the three women who lead Hot in Cleveland are great all on their own, Betty White added that extra bit of spice that this quartet of amazing females needed, and made us laugh every single week.

Life With Elizabeth (1953-1955)

When we say that Betty White had a very long, active career in television, we are not lying. Life With Elizabeth was one of Betty White’s first ever TV shows, showing the daily life of a wedded couple, showing different situations in their everyday world, often involving something silly happening later on. 

While the show didn’t run for very long compared to some of her other work, Life With Elizabeth is what put Betty on the map. What made this show even more interesting is that instead of a regular one-story episode, the show was always split up into three separate segments, showing new stories every ten minutes. And, this was one of the earliest forms of fourth-well breaking, where the characters would actually talk to the audience.

Lake Placid (1999)

I bet you didn’t think you’d see a wicked horror movie on here, but here we are. Lake Placid tells the story of the ancient legend of a supposed crocodile that is rumored to be 30 feet long, and constantly terrifies the visitors of Black Lake in Maine. Deciding that this is the end of this terror, a group takes it upon themselves to take out this monster and kill it, somehow ending its reign of horror. 

While she wasn’t a main character in the movie, White’s supporting role is hard to forget once you see it. Playing Delores, a seemingly innocent older woman who lives by the lake, was perfect for her because the character isn’t what she seems, and she has secrets. You’d never expect someone like Betty White to end up playing someone like this, but she does a great job of it. It’s also worth it just to see Betty White cuss. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed harder.

Toy Story 4 (2019)

It’s hard to top the masterpiece that was Toy Story 3, but the sequel that came out in 2019 got very close to it. Toy Story 4 is the fourth installment in the Toy Story series, this time following Woody, Buzz and the gang with their new owner, Bonnie, on a crazy adventure that takes them to a new world that they never would have imagined. 

While Betty White wasn’t featured in the movie for long, her cameo is great. She plays Bitey White (see what they did?), a child’s teething toy that was put away in the closet once Bonnie got older, fashioned as a tiger. What makes this even better is that she was paired alongside several other comedy legends in that one cameo role, like Carol Burnett, Mel Brooks, and Carl Reiner, all speaking about how they wished they could be played with by Bonnie again. It’s a “blink and you’ll miss it” kind of moment, but such a great inclusion of her voice as well as several other great voice actors.

Her Saturday Night Live Episode (2010)

Saturday Night Live has been around for decades now, so it was only a matter of time before one of the queens of TV comedy herself, White, appeared on an episode. If you’ve lived under a rock for several years, SNL is a primetime comedy sketch show that airs on Saturday nights (hence the name), creating spoofs of pop culture, politics, and more. 

Betty White hosted an episode of the popular sketch show back in 2010, and to this day I still consider it to be one of the best episodes out. Not only was her comedic timing perfect, her interactions with the cast members of that time (such as Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and more) were so funny. The sketch of her getting interviewed by the Census worker still makes me laugh every time I watch it.

Bones (2015-2017)

Next up, we have the popular crime procedural, Bones, that ran for several seasons. In this series, a forensic anthropologist, nicknamed “Bones,” and an FBI agent team up to try and solve murders through examining the remains of victims, with a new mystery every episode. 

Betty White portrayed Dr. Beth Mayer, another forensic anthropologist within the world of Bones, during Seasons 11-12. While she was only in two episodes (“The Radioactive Panthers in the Party” and “The Carpals in Coy-Wolves”), her character was so memorable for her hilarious backstory about her past lovers or husbands and everything in between. I wish they had her on for more episodes but we can at least enjoy the time she was on there now.

The Bold And The Beautiful (2006-2009)

Last but not least, let’s take a look at The Bold and the Beautiful, a long-running soap opera that featured Betty White from Seasons 20 to 23. This show follows the Forrester family, known for their famous fashion line. But even if it looks like they have everything in the world, scandals, cheating, and more cause drama within their homes and around each other. 

Betty White played Ann Douglas, the mother of Stephanie Forrester and Pam Douglas, in The Bold and the Beautiful popping up for several episodes throughout her three-season run on the show. She gave just the right amount of soapy lines, crazy drama, and everything else you would expect from a show like this, leading up to one of the most dramatic death scenes in soap opera history.

Betty White, the trailblazing comedic actress with a Guinness World Record for her nine decades in the entertainment industry, died December 31, 2021, of natural causes. She was just 17 days shy of her 100th birthday. The hilarious video making the rounds shows a 1983 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in which Joan Rivers was the guest host. The women traded quick and witty insults as White showed off her “cover girl” status on Kennel Review magazine, warning Rivers:  

Joan Rivers, who, among other things in her own decades-long career, famously roasted celebrities’ fashion until her death in 2014 on shows like Fashion Police, commented on Betty White’s outfit in The Tonight Show clip. White proved she could throw it back just as well. 

Betty White was never afraid to give a little shock value either, and she brought the racy humor to the interview, after Joan Rivers commented that White would be funny on a date if she ever had one. The Golden Girls actress gave a self-deprecating peek into her personal life.

Betty White and Joan Rivers seemed to be having an absolute blast during the interview, and their infectious joy is undoubtedly part of what is making this video go viral all these years later. It’s fitting that the viral interview has so much to do with Betty White’s love of dogs. The actress was a longtime Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association board member and was an activist for animal rights throughout her life. Betty White’s passing just weeks before her 100th birthday was a sad way to end 2021, though the past couple of days brought the world touching tributes and information from other actors and actresses about her wonderful life. Now, White’s friend and actress Carol Burnett has reportedly shared the last word that White spoke before her death.

The information became public from actress Vicki Lawrence, who worked with Betty White on the series Mama’s Family. Lawrence spoke to Page Six about White’s passing and shared the text exchange she had with Carol Burnett, who also worked on Mama’s Family. 

“Allen” refers to Betty White’s late husband and celebrity game show host Allen Ludden. He was her third husband, but White referred to her previous marriages in interviews as “rehearsals” or “mistakes.” Allen and White were a known couple in Hollywood and shared a love for animal advocacy. The couple was married for 18 years until Ludden passed away in 1981 from stomach cancer. 

Betty White’s reported final word is certainly very sweet. To think that White lived decades beyond her late husband and thought of him on her deathbed speaks a lot to their loving relationship and is a reminder that, to many, true love never fades. Even in her final moments, White served as an example of what the best of humanity can bring. 

According to Page Six, White's representative was not aware of her last word, despite Vicki Lawrence's comments about getting the word from Carol Burnett. Betty White is gone, but Hollywood and fans are still celebrating her legacy. Hopefully the celebration continues to what would have been her 100th birthday on January 17 and goes far beyond that for one of Hollywood’s most beloved actresses.

Carol Burnett herself hasn't commented on White's final word as reported by Vicki Lawrence, although she did post a tribute on social media with a message of love for her late friend, as well as some photos of them together. Burnett certainly isn't the only one, either, as a former That '70s Show star had a message of his own, and celebrities ranging from Ryan Reynolds to William Shatner to Steve Martin had tributes for her in the hours after her death was reported.

From 2002 to 2003, Betty White appeared on a total of four episodes of the hit Fox sitcom. Her character was best known for her seemingly pleasant appearance, which she used to mask a somewhat cold personality, which was mainly aimed at her daughter. The character was also known for humorously yelling out, “Bert!” whenever she tried to get her husband’s attention. Though it was a smaller supporting role, White was more than able to flex her comedic chops with it and became a memorable part of the cast.

The show saw Rose Nylund, Blanche Devereaux and Sophia Petrillo, now without the newly married Dorothy, move from their home and invest in a Miami hotel. Don Cheadle played the role of hotel manager Roland Wilson and, like the other characters, he had some chuckworthy exchanges with Betty White’s Rose. 

The Emmy-winning actress was much more cognizant of her environment than her scatterbrained character. To that point, in a recent Twitter post, Marvel’s War Machine actor recalled a lighting problem that the show was having. And ultimately, the Rose actress kindly found a solution to the situation:

She was perhaps known best as Rose Nylund from The Golden Girls, but her television credits number in the hundreds, including her place as a mainstay on classic game shows like The Hollywood Squares and Match Game.

Major accolades of Betty White’s storied career include eight Emmy Awards, two SAG Awards and a Grammy. In fact, White was one of the first women to be nominated for an Emmy, as an award for Best Actress was added in 1951, with White being one of the initial nominees. She didn’t win that one, but in 1983, White became the first woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Game Show Host, ironically, for the show Just Men!

Hollywood icon Betty White recently turned 99 years old. Her co-star from The Proposal, Ryan Reynolds, decided to celebrate her special day by addressing their on-set “feud” online. The film was a big moment in both of their careers when it was released in 2009. Reynolds shared a video showing the time they were feuding on the set of The Proposal.

Over the years, Ryan Reynolds has had his fair share of “feuds” with other celebrities, including Chris Hemsworth and (perhaps most notably) Hugh Jackman. But one feud people may have forgotten about is his clash with Betty White while filming The Proposal. Well, now you needn't miss out on that. The video Reynolds uploaded to YouTube started with Reynolds and co-star Sandra Bullock plugging the film before White enters the scene. Take a look:

As you can see above, Ryan Reynolds asked Sandra Bullock, “What is she doing? What is Betty doing here?” He told Bullock that Betty White seemed to hate him. Bullock brushed him off as she prepared to set up for a shot on the film. Betty White sat beside Reynolds and proceeded to ask him to get her coffee. At that moment, he reminded her that he was starring in the film as well.

From there, they went back and forth, as Ryan Reynolds tried to clarify he is not her assistant. Betty White proceeded to call him “an ab-crunching jack” before he loses it. You can see what specific insults the actors throw at each other in the video, including White getting particularly explicit at Reynolds.

Eventually, Sandra Bullock walked in on Ryan Reynolds announcing the phrase to the crew. She then proceeded to berate Reynolds in front of everyone before telling him to apologize to Betty White.

The skit showcased Betty White and Ryan Reynolds’ amazing chemistry and timing during their time on the set. Upon uploading the clip, Reynolds wrote under the video,

At a time when romance comedies are making a comeback, The Proposal was one of the most-talked films from 2009. The Proposal marked one of two box office hits for Reynolds that year, along with X-Men Origins: Wolverine with Hugh Jackman (it cannot be emphasized enough how deep Reynolds' feud with Jackman goes). For White, the film marked a return to public conscience after years of acting sporadically in the 2000s. The film earned critical acclaim and grossed over $137 million at the global box office.

It’s nice to see Ryan Reynolds still has the same love and admiration for Betty White he had during the filming of that romantic comedy. The series Betty White mentioned, The Pet Set, is a syndicated television show the actress did in the 1970s and was produced by White's late husband, Allen Ludden. The series was hosted by White and featured the actress interacting with other notable celebrities and their interactions with animals. The Pet Set will be rereleased on DVD and streaming platforms on February 23 to commemorate the program's 50th anniversary.

The series showcased Betty White tapping into her lifelong love of animals while also delivering entertainment with other celebrities, so perhaps a new generation of fans will discover the show with its rerelease. Suffice to say, I think those two ducks are going to walk away well-fed on White's birthday, which should be a happy event for all parties involved.

Calling Alex Trebek a staple of American television would be a serious statement. For nearly 40 years, he’s entered our homes (via the TV) as the host of Jeopardy! and, along the way, he’s earned a place in the hearts of viewers. Of course, there will come a day when he’ll step down from his longtime post and pick a successor. Trebek doesn’t appear to have given the matter serious any serious thought, but he has joked that Betty White may be his rightful successor:

One can’t help but chuckle when hearing Alex Trebek’s comments to Good Morning America, but you have to appreciate the sentiment. He and Betty White have been friends for years, and one can see why he would joke about handing the keys over to someone close to him.

If we’re being realistic, Betty White probably has no interest in taking over the gig. The 98-year-old actress and TV personality has stayed more than busy over the course of her 80-year career. Aside from the occasional film and television role, White just seems to be enjoying life, which has only continued during self-quarantine.

Nevertheless, Alex Trebek is definitely wise in recognizing Betty White as a potential replacement, as she has more than enough experience to do the job. Between the ‘40s and ‘50s, White hosted self-titled radio and variety shows. She also hosted the classic show Hollywood on Television, which earned her a regional Emmy award.

To add to her cred, she also served as a celebrity guest on numerous game shows throughout the 1960s. These include such programs like Password, To Tell the Truth, I’ve Got a Secret and Pyramid. So all in all, Betty White would (theoretically) still make a great Jeopardy! host.

Questions regarding Alex Trebek’s tenure as the host of Jeopardy! have increased over the past few years, especially after he revealed last year that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Despite having both good and bad days, Trebek says he’s responding well to his treatment and that his numbers look good. Jeopardy! has been off the air for a few months due to the global health crisis, but the host hasn’t been complacent. He’s been staying healthy and has even written a memoir. He also gave a recent update in which he could be seen sporting a sharp suit and smooth mustache.

Alex Trebek seems more than ready to return to his post, and fans are definitely eager for him to make his return. Although Betty White and many others would be intriguing choices for the show’s future, let’s just hope we still get plenty of more time to spend with Trebek before he hangs it up.

Betty White is basically a national treasure, and when she says she’s not going to do something, people tend to listen. SNL writer Mike O’Brien learned that the hard way, however, when Betty White was the host on the show back in 2010 – O’Brien’s first year writing for Saturday Night Live in fact – and she rejected a unicorn-based sketch for a pretty amusing reason.

But first, let’s set the stage at 30 Rock. Basically, Mike O’Brien had what he felt was a pretty rock solid pitch for Betty White’s big SNL episode. The sketch would have had Betty White playing a unicorn veterinarian, but ultimately never made it to the air for a pretty funny reason, as Mike O’Brien recently recounted to late night host Seth Meyers. After going well in rehearsal, it was White’s manager who broke the news.

Mike O’Brien previously talked on Late Night with Seth Meyers about what this sketch was supposed to entail. It would have starred Betty White as a unicorn veterinarian who was caught on a bad day, having to tell a group of little girls that some unicorns were going to have to be euthanized thanks to eye infections.

Apparently, Betty White was not having the unicorn euthanization sketch, which is unfortunate because Seth Meyers, Jason Sudeikis and Mike O’Brien all recounted that it just killed in rehearsals. O’Brien was a little bummed. He’s said in the past the first season was difficult for him and that the unicorn sketch was one of the more obviously funny pieces he’d written all year. Yet, during the 2020 Late Night with Seth Meyers exchange, he admitted that trying to reason with Betty White’s manager was impossible.

Although she didn’t say yes to the seemingly hilarious unicorn sketch, Betty White did have a few memorable sketches as part of her SNL episode, including a “Scared Straight” sketch with Kenan Thompson and another about a censor taker. So, the episode still went pretty well, even though no stuffed unicorns were harmed in the making of the episode. Not bad, considering Betty White was nervous to do the episode to begin with.

Later, this sketch briefly lived on through Will Ferrell and Jason Sudeikis in a bit that Mike O’Brien says went “medium” in rehearsal. Now, Second Chance Theater has taken it on with Sudeikis and O’Brien tackling the sketch. You can see the bit below and try to imagine it with Betty White in the role. Maybe if you squint a little.

These days the Saturday Night Live alums are no longer on the show, though Jason Sudeikis had been popping on to play Joe Biden last season. After exiting, Mike O’Brien went on to create A.P. In 2010, Betty White received an honorary forest ranger destination by the U.S. Forest Service at Washington's Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Her love of animals never wavered. She has been active in animal charities throughout her career, she produced and hosted a syndicated show called The Pet Set in the 1970s, hosted a radio program called Betty White on Animals, and wrote a book called Betty White's Pet Love. She even turned down a role in As Good As It Gets because she wasn't ok with the part about a puppy being dropped down a laundry chute. During WWII, She Volunteered for the American Women's Voluntary Services

Just as Betty White was starting to establish herself as both an actress and model, World War II broke out. As a result, the aspiring performer decided to put her professional aspirations on hold in order to serve her country as a volunteer for the American Women's Voluntary Services. During the day, White drove a PX truck to transport military supplies up to the bivouacs in the Hollywood Hills. At night, White would perform dances held for the troops before they were deployed. White called it "a strange time and out of balance with everything," yet White has been continuously selfless when it comes to entertaining the masses throughout her long-standing career. She has found various ways to help others, especially in their times of need.

While it is always a prestigious honor to be nominated for an Emmy award, Betty White's first Emmy nomination was particularly noteworthy as she was among the first women ever to be recognized by this awards division. While the Emmys were first established in 1949, it wasn't until 1951 that the Best Actress category was established by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Shortly after Life with Elizabeth, Betty White made 1954's The Betty White Show, which once again saw the actress assuming creative control behind the camera. Particularly in an era where the TV industry was dominated by men, White's control was notable and progressive. The daily talk/variety show on NBC allowed White to hire a female director as well as Arthur Duncan, an African-American performer, as a regular cast member. 

The casting caused sharp criticism from southern stations as the show expanded nationally. These stations threatened to boycott until Duncan was taken off the series. In response, White wrote the cutting "I'm sorry. Live with it." She also gave Duncan more screen time. Despite initial success, this series was canceled before the year's end. Nevertheless, it proved to be a pivotal, meaningful, and certainly compelling chapter in White's expansive career.

Back in late 2016, a fan even launched a GoFundMe campaign so that he could personally protect Betty White from anything that might come her way. That is, if she agreed to being protected and all that. The campaign was, at least in part, spurred by the fact that so many known actors, including Star Wars’ Carrie Fisher, died that year. White is a national treasure and fans wanted to ensure her safety. Flash forward to today, and it sounds like White is still finding a way to stay safe, healthy, and busy -- despite the fact that 2020 is inarguably much worse than 2016. Hopefully, White will continue doing well.

Betty White’s last project was voicing the animated Bitey White in Toy Story 4. Before that, she had recurring guest roles on the TV series Fireside Chat with Esther, Young and Hungry, and Bones.

With 17 seasons on television and well over 300 episodes under its stretched belt, Family Guy has become one of the longest-running sitcoms on TV, animated or otherwise. As a risqué show that thrives on pop culture, over-the-top reoccurring gags and shocking bits of humor, Family Guy tries to find different ways to surprise the viewer. More often than not, one of the most surprising aspects of the extended series is the onslaught of celebrity guest stars and cameos that the producers/show-runners have found during the provocative animated Fox series' long-standing run on network TV.

Whether it's Alex Trebek, Johnny Depp, Bob Barker, Simon Cowell, Liam Neeson, the cast of The Simpsons, Ryan Reynolds, Mike Judge's Hank Hill, Bryan Cranston or any of the other high-profile celebrity voices the producers have found in their recording booth, Family Guy has prided itself on its big-name cameos. Here, we aim to celebrate a mere ten standouts from the incredibly long list of short-form star turns on the Seth MacFarlane-created animated sitcom.

First, though, some clarifications. It would be tempting to include some all-time great supporting appearances from Patrick Stewart, the late Carrie Fisher and, of course, the late Adam West. However, these icons were recurring characters as opposed to guest stars. The same goes for Drew Barrymore in the fabulously ditzy role of Jillian. And Conway Twitty?Alas, that's merely archival footage, and not technically a guest star appearance. It's difficult to call someone a guest when they died before the show itself was hard to say that someone made a guest appearance on a hit show if they died years before the show was even in its earliest development stages. And now, let's kick things off!

Cate Blanchett

When one thinks of two-time Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett, Family Guy likely isn't the first reference. Yet, the widely-acclaimed actress did make a guest star appearance on the show, and it wasn't merely a walk-on (or one-line) gag. The thespian played Penelope, the one-time girlfriend of Stewie Griffin (Seth MacFarlane), in the Season 10 episode entitled "Mr. And Mrs. Stewie." Not only that, but in another Season 10 episode, "Family Guy Viewer Mail No. 2," the Australian actress briefly voiced none other than Queen Elizabeth II.

A number of celebrities often make guest appearances to provide a warped perception of their public persona. But it's still rare to see an actress of this caliber lending her voice to the role of a vengeful, chaos-loving toddler who finds herself in a loving relationship with our similarly twisted kiddo, Stewie. It's not something you'd expect, but knowing that Cate Blanchett had a good enough sense of humor to play this role makes her even more lovable and endearing as a high-caliber actress. And she helps to sell what could've easily been a disposable character arc into something that's consistently funny and more emotionally resonant.

Betty White

Betty White is a treasure. The veteran of the stage and screen has been making people laugh for generations, and we will hopefully enjoy Ms. White's company for years to come, Lord willing. While there are countless places where Betty White has delighted the viewing public-at-large, one of the most noteworthy contemporary sources of laughter came from her memorable turn on Family Guy back in Season 4, where the actress played a version of herself reading Peter's erotic fiction in the episode titled, fittingly enough, "Peterotica."

Betty White made an earlier cameo in the Season 2 episode "If I'm Dyin', I'm Lyin'," showing up on Hollywood Squares, as well as in Season 3's "Mr. Saturday Knight." But it was White's Season 4 appearance that cemented her status in the show's legacy (and this list). Having the sweet, gingerly voice of Ms. White read the crude erotic fiction of the sexually bogged patriarch is a combination that's both very wrong and very right. The delightful manner in which she delivers her crude dialogue makes it a stitch, especially when Betty White gets to play herself, outside of reading what Peter wrote on the page. Indeed, it would be hard to top this appearance.

Robert Loggia

Many viewers may not have been so familiar with Robert Loggia until Family Guy made its odd-yet-endearing cutaway joke about his name. The premise was that Peter Griffin once found himself behind the veteran actor while trying to board a plane, but he had no qualms about letting the world know that he is, indeed, Robert Loggia. Can you believe it? It's Robert Loggia. Alas, this appearance was not provided by Loggia himself, despite what some might think. Producer John Viener provided the pipes for the Big actor this time around, but the popularity of the joke turned Loggia back into a regular household name of sorts, even for folks who weren't familiar with the character actor's extensive work.

Possibly in a show of respect for getting his name back out there in a major way, Robert Loggia did eventually make an official cameo appearance on Family Guy. This time around, he was able to play himself without anyone else filling in for Season 9's "Brothers & Sisters." While the unexpected live-action appearance was only one line, it was a delightful, welcomed surprise for long-time Family Guy fans to see the late character actor popping up. And that wasn't even the end of Loggia on the show, as he also came back for a more foul-mouthed appearance in season 11's "Call Girl."

Carol Channing

A legend of Broadway and musical theater, Carol Channing remains one of the biggest figures in musical history. Her squeaky voice and radiant smile were easy to parody, too. (I, myself, particularly enjoyed Ryan Stiles' running impersonation on Whose Line Is It Anyway?). It is hard to top the woman herself, though, especially when she's willing to get in on the joke and have a laugh at her own expense, as she did in the early days of Family Guy.

Carol Channing only made one appearance on Family Guy, but it was certainly a memorable one. The actress appeared in Season 4's "Patriot Games," where the Broadway legend squared off against none other than professional boxer Mike Tyson. As you would expect, things don't necessarily go as planned. While Tyson gets more punches in, Channing is a tough cookie. Anyone who excels on Broadway is certainly a fighter. Sure enough, the actress wins out when Tyson forfeits, resulting in Channing becoming the unexpected winner of the fight.

Norm Macdonald

Often among the more under-appreciated stars of the '90s Saturday Night Live crew, one-time "Weekend Update" correspondent Norm Macdonald hasn't earned the same notoriety as Adam Sandler, Chris Farley or Mike Myers, but he's still one of the funniest sumbitches in the comedy business. It only makes sense that he would find himself on Family Guy, though the role the dry and positive-minded actor played was, perhaps, an unexpected one: specifically, Macdonald portrayed Death.

In the Season 2 episode "Death Is A Bitch," Norm Macdonald found himself playing an unusual, if highly amusing, take on the Grim Reaper. As it turns out, the cloaked figure accidentally twisted his ankle when trying to put Peter Griffin in his eternal sleep, and found himself taking a much-needed vacation. Death being waylaid thus made everyone immortal, which obviously became a problem. Sure enough, Peter Griffin unwittingly has to help Death get back on his feet, which is far from an easy task. Death came back for future episodes, but Macdonald was unable to return, and the role was given to Adam Carolla instead. But Macdonald did came back to read "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" as himself during an episode in Season 16.

James Woods

While James Woods is a controversial figure in his personal life these days, it's hard to deny how funny he could be during his extended guest star appearances on Family Guy. Similar to Adam West and Patrick Stewart, he has appeared on the show enough times that he verges on becoming a fully supporting cast member on the series. But the creative team has always been pretty good about how the semi-annual James Woods appearances get used. Even more thankfully, James Woods was always willing to dig into every absurd idea thrown his way.

James Woods has been a part of Family Guy lore from the get go. His Quahog roots resulted in the local public school being named James Woods Regional High School. But it wasn't long before James Woods became an actual character in the animated series, starting in Season 4 episode, "Peter Gots Woods." From there, much like Sideshow Bob in The Simpsons, the animated Woods has become more bonkers and absurd with each passing year. But the actor was always able to roll with the punches on Family Guy, which resulted in the writers creating very goofy and often enjoyable bits.

Luke Perry

Tragically and very unfortunately, Luke Perry passed away earlier this year. By many accounts, the former Beverly Hills 90210 actor was a very loving and generous man, and he will be missed by many. His lengthy acting career provided him the opportunity for a memorable performance playing himself in Family Guy for the Season 2 episode "The Story On Page One." In it, the actor came into contact with Quahog after Peter Griffin used Meg's name to publish a high school newspaper article claiming that Luke Perry was a closeted gay man. Soon enough, Perry gave Peter Griffin a visit, and lots of celebrity shenanigans ensued.

As we have mentioned in this list, there have been quite a few celebrities who created laughs at their own expense on the crude animated series. But Luke Perry was able to flesh his Family Guy persona out more than simply a walk-on appearance, making this version of Perry his own in the process. It shows that the actor had a good sense of humor, and that he didn't take himself as seriously as his 90210 character, which only makes his death that much harder to take.

Robert Downey Jr.

Before Robert Downey Jr. became a major blockbuster superstar through his career-revitalizing role in 2008's Iron Man, he was certainly trying for a rebound. He starred in a variety of projects, many of which he probably wouldn't find the time to do today, and one of those projects was Family Guy. Downey Jr.'s guest appearance in Family Guy didn't have him playing himself, however, but instead the role of Patrick Pewterschmidt, Lois' long-lost brother.

As it turns out, the producers didn't have to reach out to Robert Downey Jr. Rather, the future Iron Man actor reached out to them, since his son was a big fan of the show. This led to the creation of the Patrick Pewterschmidt character, a handsome and charismatic sibling to Lois Griffin in the Season 4 episode "The Fat Guy Strangler." As you'd expect from that title, things don't go well between Peter Griffin and his malicious long-lost brother-in-law.

Will Ferrell

In the early days of Family Guy, when the animated show had more of a cult following instead of the adoring fandom that it found after its post-cancellation resurrection on Fox, it was a very big deal to land Will Ferrell for a guest star appearance. The actor was well on the rise in the comedy scene as a scene-stealing wild man on Saturday Night Live, and he was only a few years away from becoming a bigger name via Old School and Anchorman.

Will Ferrell first appeared on Family Guy through some bit roles Season 2, it was his memorable turn in the Season Three episode "Mr. Saturday Knight" that helped to cement the actor's high place in the animated show's annals. In the role of The Black Knight, an imposing medieval figure who gives Peter Griffin a hard time about joining the Medieval fair, Will Ferrell was not his usual warm and cuddly self. Indeed, he was an outright antagonistic figure, and it was an interesting turn for early-ish Farrell.

The Cast Of Star Trek: The Next Generation

Seth MacFarlane has made it no secret that he's a big fan of Star Trek, particularly Star Trek: The Next Generation. His newest show, The Orville, is basically a love letter to the franchise, and shows off his lifelong love of sci-fi. Therefore, he has often squeezed in appearances from the Star Trek cast whenever possible, most notably working with Patrick Stewart on numerous occasions, including a supporting role on American Dad and the short-lived Starz comedy Blunt Talk. But it was when he got to reunite the Next Generation cast on Family Guy that he really lived out his fantasy.

While there are several mentions of Star Trek throughout the show, it was in the Season 7 episode "Not All Dogs Go To Heaven" that brought the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation to animated glory. This was a huge get and a huge honor for the show creator, so he clearly wanted to make the most of this opportunity. Sure enough, it resulted in a humorous and memorable episode, and it wasn't the last time they made memorable guest appearances.

Like we said earlier, these are only a handful of the sensational guest star appearances found on Family Guy, and there are are hundreds more (slightly less great) cameos to be found throughout the extended run of the popular and provocative comedy. For decades, many of the most important and often celebrated moments in comedy have had one thing in common: Saturday Night Live. NBC’s 90-minute, live variety show has become such a cultural staple that most celebrities gauge their success on landing the coveted role of the SNL host.

Many have filled the position with glorious results, often getting invited back -- such as Christopher Walken, Robert DeNiro, or former cast member Tina Fey. Some have hosted Saturday Night Live with less than impressive results, but we won’t talk about them here.

We will talk about the artists who have who have helped define Saturday Night Live sometimes better than the cast members. Live from CinemaBlend, it’s the top 10 best SNL hosts of all time.

10. Emma Stone

Before she was the Academy Award-winning star of La La Land or The Favourite, Emma Stone showed remarkable comedic talents in her earlier roles in Superbad and Easy A. Those gifts effortlessly carried over when she first hosted Saturday Night Live in 2010.

She has since returned to Studio 8H three times and has starred as a couple of recurring characters, one that has received praise (Wallace, the worst gift giver at bridal showers) and another that wastes Emma Stone’s talents (a ditzy hot blonde on a bedroom poster brought to life). Stone also made an appearance at SNL’s 40th anniversary special, giving a spot-on impersonation of Gilda Radner’s Roseanne Roseannadanna.

9. Jon Hamm

No one could have predicted that the star of one of TV’s most intense dramas, Mad Men, would be such dynamic comedy tour de force. Jon Hamm first hosted Saturday Night Live in a 2008 episode that practically saved the show’s 34th season from a complete dry spell, parodying his role as Don Draper and even his own name as a spokesman for “Jon Hamm’s John Ham”: lunch meat you eat on the toilet.

The Golden Globe-winning actor has returned to host SNL only two more times, but has made frequent cameos as either himself or for a recurring appearance of one his original characters, like mystical saxophonist Sergio. One of his most unexpected, yet decidedly fitting, appearances was a live action portrayal of Ace from Robert Smigel’s animated Ambiguously Gay Duo, alongside Jimmy Fallon as Gary.

8. Melissa McCarthy

She may have been a fan favorite on Gilmore Girls and won an Emmy for the CBS sitcom Mike & Molly, but Melissa McCarthy’s true television home is on the stage of Saturday Night Live. The two-time Academy Award-nominee has hosted the sketch comedy program five times and always with something memorable to show for it.

Melissa McCarthy has been the driving force of many uproarious sketches throughout her time as a host, including professional pizza eater Barb Kelner or monstrously abusive college basketball coach Sheila Kelly. Yet, her most famous SNL work thus far would have to be her outlandishly exaggerated take on former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, whose only comment in response to the impression was that she needed to “slow down on the gum chewing.”

7. Candice Bergen

As the first woman to ever host Saturday Night Live, legendary television icon Candice Bergen took the show by storm on the series’ fourth episode. Many would even credit the Murphy Brown star as the first to set the tone for the definitive SNL host, with her confident onscreen presence.

Candice Bergen easily could have been a Not Ready For Primetime Player if she had not already been made for primetime stardom. This must be why she also became the first host to be asked back for a second gig, eventually holding a personal record of seven episodes.

6. Betty White

Betty White has only hosted Saturday Night Live once, but her sole episode as host is the stuff of legend. Thanks to a successful Facebook campaign, the actress and comedian took the stage as the oldest SNL host in the show’s history at 88 years old.

She had already gained newfound attention from her role as Ryan Reynolds’ spunky grandmother in The Proposal, but Betty White’s surprisingly uproarious hosting gig showed a fearless side of the actress few had expected. That side came out on full blast when she appeared on SNL’s 40th anniversary special, during which she made out with Bradley Cooper.

5. Richard Pryor

It may sound hard to believe, but late, legendary comedian Richard Pryor only hosted Saturday Night Live once in his career, too. It only seems hard to believe because so many classic moments came out of his episode alone.

As the first black actor to host the show, Richard Pryor brought his signature, and often controversial, comedy style to Saturday Night Live. From his outrageous opening monologue to his risque “Word Association” test sketch opposite Chevy Chase, facing off against John Belushi’s Samurai, and a reimagining of The Exorcist from the point of view of black priests, his episode is a whole season’s worth of iconic moments all rolled into 90 minutes.

4. Tom Hanks

He is one of the most beloved and respected actors of all time. Some would say Tom Hanks has earned his street cred from playing Forrest Gump or voicing Woody in Toy Story, but I think we can thank Saturday Night Live.

Tom Hanks starred in the original Five-Timers club for his fifth hosting gig in 1990 and has returned four times as host since, and in several cameos as exaggerated versions of himself and recurring characters he originated on the show. Younger viewers probably know him best as everyone’s favorite Halloween party guest, David S. Pumpkins.

3. Alec Baldwin

He is the current holder of the record for hosting Saturday Night Live the most at 17 times. Never has Alec Baldwin disappointed from the Studio 8H stage.

Sometimes it is hard to believe that Alec Baldwin has never been an official SNL cast member, especially with his unbelievable talent for impersonations, such as Tony Bennett, and brimming commitment to every sketch. Now, he shows up nearly every single week as the show’s in-house Donald Trump.

2. Justin Timberlake

Saturday Night Live has had a few big “events” in its time, from its anniversary specials to its annual holiday sketch compilations. However, no SNL event is bigger than when Justin Timberlake is in the house.

The pop star and actor is the star of multiple recurring sketches that never fail to get a laugh, such as “Barry Gibb Talk Show” or “Omeletteville” and his many subsequent follow-ups, or anything he’s teamed up with Andy Samberg for. Justin Timberlake has cemented himself as Saturday Night Live’s definitive host for the current generation.

1. Steve Martin

No matter what generation it is, no Saturday Night Live host is as timeless as Steve Martin. Since his first time in 1976, he has practically made it his lifetime goal to be the ultimate SNL host, despite not returning since 2009, and has never let that promise down.

It is impossible to discuss the most celebrated moments of Saturday Night Live without mentioning Steve Martin, from his performance as one half of the Festrunk Brothers (the “Wild and Crazy guys”) with Dan Aykroyd, donning pharaoh’s robes for a musical tribute to King Tut, and a tongue-in-cheek, decades-long battle for SNL dominance against Alec Baldwin. He may never have been a cast member (also surprisingly), but he is one of the program’s biggest names.

Toy Story 4 already had a stacked cast, from Tom Hanks and Tim Allen obviously reprising Woody and Buzz Lightyear, respectively, to newcomers like Keanu Reeves and Christina Hendricks jumping in as new toys the main characters meet during their latest adventure. But with less than two weeks to go until Toy Story 4 hits theaters, it’s been revealed that comedy icons Mel Brooks, Betty White, Carl Reiner and Carol Burnett will also be lending their talents to the latest Pixar movie.

So how are these legends participating in Toy Story 4? Well, as it most often the case with this franchise, they’ll be voicing toys, specifically ones belonging to Bonnie, just like Woody, Buzz and the gang. However, in the case of this quartet, while they were Bonnie’s favorite toys when she was a baby, as the girl’s gotten older, they’ve fallen out of favor, which is what’s happened to Woody at the start of the movie.

These already sound like worthwhile characters to bring in, but what makes them even better is their punny names. Mel Brooks is voicing a blue elephant named Melephant Brooks, Betty White is voicing an orange tiger named Bitey White, Carl Reiner is voicing a pink rhino named Carl Reineroceros and Carol Burnett is voicing a green chair named Chairol Burnett. All these toys also have a “natural personality” fitting the actor voicing them.

Here’s what director Josh Cooley told USA Today how these characters fit into Toy Story 4:

Josh Cooley also mentioned that he recorded Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner’s lines while the two longtime friends were together in Reiner’s living room, which the director described as “so surreal and so awesome.” He added that Brooks and Reiner did an excellent job riffing off each other, and Brooks humorously reminded Cooley that he’s directed films too.

Toy Story 3 explored people outgrowing their toys with Andy having left his playthings in the toy chest years earlier and him going to college marking his first steps into adulthood. Now, through Mel Brooks, Betty White, Carl Reiner and Carol Burnett’s characters, Toy Story 4 offers a look at the toys we leave behind even as we’re still young and our tastes change.

Since it looks like Toy Story 4 could be the last film entry in this franchise, it’s great to hear that all four of these comedy talents were able to lend their voices to it, though we’ll have to wait and see how much screen time they have. It’s also worth mentioning that Mel Brooks was good friends with Don Rickles, who passed away in 2017, but will still be heard as Mr. Potato Head in Toy Story 4 thanks to archival audio.

She is a pop culture icon, and now Betty White is the subject of a brand new special by PBS, Betty White: First Lady of Television. Her storied career is comprised of its fair share of memorable television milestones, and one of them occurred when she hosted Saturday Night Live back in May 2010, which was the result of a fan campaign started on Facebook calling for White to host the show. As it turns out, Betty White had to deal with some stage fright for the broadcast, but the stage fright wasn't ruinous to her performance. White said:

Whatever works! Betty White's stage fright did everything but negatively impact her performance. She came across so relaxed on-screen that it was impossible to notice her understandable nerves doing the show. Her stage fright did end up giving her the "edge" she needed over her fellow nominees when it came time for the Emmys. White took home the award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance on Saturday Night Live.

In the clip released ahead of the PBS special's premiere, Betty White's agent Jeff Witjas shared that he was concerned he may have pushed the entertainment legend too far with her hosting gig on the show. Despite his concerns, the whole thing ended up working out with White nailing it with her sensational turn on the show.

While he knew he was pushing her outside of her "comfort zone," Betty White reveals that she took solace in the Saturday Night Live superstars that took the stage alongside her, including Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph, and Molly Shannon. White said:

Betty White was ready to knock everyone's socks off, and that is what she did. Viewers were not the only ones who were impressed with White's Saturday Night Live performance. Tina Fey shared how inspired she was by White during the week they shared working on the special episode together. After saying how much she loves White, Fey praised her "rock-solid" timing. And Fey was not alone in expressing her astonishment over White's pitch-perfect turn on Saturday Night Live.

Ryan Reynolds, Betty White's co-star in the comedy The Proposal, also shared his amazement at White hosting the NBC show. And to think we may have never seen it if that fan had not started the campaign to get Betty White on the sketch comedy series. Did that fan ever do the world a service! Thank you, fan!

Everybody loves Betty White, but it's possible nobody loves any member of the Golden Girls cast quite as much as Deadpool. In celebration of the actresses 96th birthday, the merc with a mouth sent her a very special message. In a new social media post, Deadpool celebrates White, and two of her favorite things, hot dogs and vodka, or as he puts it, "tinis and weenies." Check out the image below.

While most of Deadpool's love of the Golden Girls seems to be reserved for Bea Arthur, his swords are named for her, after all, he really loves everything about the 80s sitcom, and that means Betty White as well. Yesterday the actress celebrated a major birthday, and Deadpool was there to congratulate her on the achievement. It's a great image because for some reason, seeing Deadpool with a martini in one hand and a hot dog in the other, being held like a candy bar like nobody does, actually looks perfectly normal. It's like what you would expect to see from him.

If anything, Betty White has only become more famous in recent years. She's made something of a new career simply out of being Betty White and saying and doing pretty much whatever she likes. It's no wonder that both Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool are fans. Reynolds actually worked with her previously on the film The Proposal where White played the grandmother to Reynolds' character. While the two haven't worked together on a film in years, White did put out a fairly glowing, and profanity-filled, review of the first Deadpool movie, so the love obviously goes both ways here.

While what we've seen of the upcoming Deadpool 2 is fairly limited so far, we can expect lots of great Golden Girls related jokes just like we got the first time around. The character's obsession with the sitcom starring elderly women actually goes back to the comics and is just one of the quirks that make the character so unlike other comic book superheroes. If we're really lucky, maybe we'll get a Betty White cameo in the sequel. It's not the craziest thing the movie could do.

Deadpool 2 recently saw it's release date moved up to May 18 from its original June date, meaning we're only four months away from the highly anticipated sequel. Hopefully, we'll get to hear Betty White's thought on the new movie as well. It's the least she can do after the nice birthday message.

Long before Girls or Sex and the City made quartets of funny females the fashionable thing on television, we had The Golden Girls. The classic sitcom has become absolutely iconic in the annals of television history since it went off the air in 1992, and longtime fans have continuously clamored for a reboot or a revival. So what are the odds of it ever happening? According to The Golden Girls creator Susan Harris: it will likely never happen because the underlying charm of Golden Girls stems from the charisma and dynamic of the original cast. Harris explained:

If you ever hoped to see a Golden Girls reboot, I think it is safe to say that Susan Harris' recent comments to EW will come as a massive disappointment. This is not really up for debate; Golden Girls lives and dies by the overwhelming charm of its four female leads, and replacing any of them would compromise the integrity of the series.

Sadly, Betty White is the only actress from the central cast of the original series that is still alive. As charming and delightful as Ms. White was on The Golden Girls (and continues to be on a wide variety of film and television projects to this very day) this really seems to indicate that the time for a potential reboot has officially passed us by. Each and every member of the core ensemble played a vital role in the show's balance of personalities, so to lose even one of them would throw the entire thing off.

We have already seen what happens when people try to mess with The Golden Girls' formula. An attempt was made at a spin-off series shortly after the finale of the original series (titled The Golden Palace), and it ultimately didn't work because Bea Arthur did not return as a series regular to join her co-stars. Susan Harris elaborated:

We live in an age that has become completely defined by remakes, reboots, and revivals. That tradition has slowly but surely made its way from the silver screen to the small screen in recent years, but it now seems that The Golden Girls likely won't follow that trend any time in the near future. Considering the insane legacy the sitcom has already left behind, that might not be a bad thing. On the plus side, The Golden Girls is now available to stream on Hulu, so make sure to check out the classic series in its entirety!

Betty White isn't going anywhere! The iconic actress celebrates her 95th birthday on Tuesday, and is just as vibrant as ever.

To help celebrate 95 years, Betty White sat down with Katie Couric for a birthday interview with Yahoo! News. White, who was given the Guinness World Record three years back for having the longest television career of any female entertainer, reminisced on her favorite roles. She came to the conclusion that her gig as a Saturday Night Live host in 2010 was probably the most fun she had, although her popular Snickers ad from that same year was also up there.

Of course, Betty White doesn't have to reminisce about her acting career --- she's still working. Although her most recent regular role on TV Land's Hot in Cleveland came to an end in 2015, White appeared in the NBC comedy Crowded last year, and she's slated to reprise her role of forensic anthropologist Dr. Beth Mayer in an upcoming episode of Bones. White told Katie Couric that continuing her work in television has been the thing she's most proud of.

At the end of 2016, a year that turned out to be surprisingly lethal to so many beloved celebrities, many people were growing concerned about the iconic stars who are up there in age. Following the tragic news of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds' deaths in the last few days of the year, Betty White became a trending topic on Twitter, which initially scared her many fans until realizing it was because so many people were tweeting about being worried that the nonagenarian would become another victim of the vicious year. Fans even set up a GoFundMe campaign jokingly trying to raise money to protect her from 2016. But in the end, the year was no match for White.

We hope she has an awesome 95th birthday!

Longtime TV and occasional movie actress Betty White has been in the entertainment business since the 1940s. She's basically a national treasure at this point, and all of the major deaths in 2016 apparently have some people concerned that Betty White might go next. She is 94, after all. A South Carolina man even put together a hilarious GoFundMe account in the hopes that he can help protect the longtime actress from the cruel, cruel nature of 2016... and maybe make some money for his local theater on the side.

South Carolina's Demetrios Hrysiko has set up an account asking people to donate money so that he can personally protect Betty White from any trouble that may come her way. The man even has a funny little blurb that helps to better explain his purpose.

In the short time I was putting together this post, the donations had risen from a little over $1,500 dollars to well over 2K in money to get Demetrios to his goal. I like that the man adds a little addendum to his post, noting that he doesn't want to creep Betty White out and instead simply wants to help her if she wants to be helped. In the meantime, the Spartanburg Little Theater will get any of the money donated by fans of the campaign. It's a really amusing campaign to raise money for his local theater group that capitalizes on the hook that we don't want to lose Betty White next. As a comedienne herself, we believe Betty White would probably approve.

On a more somber note, we have lost a lot of Hollywood and even musical greats this year, from Carrie Fisher to Alan Rickman to David Bowie and Prince and all the Merle Haggards, Leonard Cohens and Antoine Yelchins in between. The year 2016 has been a rather sad one for icons by all accounts, and no one is looking for the former Hot in Cleveland actress to go next.

Reviews on tomorrow’s Deadpool have been going up all week. While the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive thus far, we know that it can be difficult to be sure that the film will live up to your already high expectations. So, to that end, let us provide for you, the movie fan, the only review you need to hear about just how good Deadpool really is. Here’s Betty White’s review. It has to be seen to be believed.

Just imagine what a review like this means to Deadpool himself. His longstanding love of The Golden Girls is very well known, and so to have one of them speak so highly of his movie must mean the world. Have we mentioned how much we love Betty White? She’s a national treasure. Really, if you’re going to give an appropriate review of one of the most vulgar movies in quite some time, there’s really no other way to do it than to be mostly vulgar yourself. We’re not quite sure what to make of her assertion that your family would have to be inbreds in order to enjoy the film together. I’m pretty sure most of my family will love Deadpool and they’re...ok, actually my family is pretty messed up. Point taken.

But don’t think it’s all language and violence. Ryan Reynolds is also, apparently, really sexy in this movie, according to Betty. We assume she’s only referring to when he keeps his mask on his face. Without it, he’s really not much to look at.

We’d also be remiss if we didn’t point out that Betty White only refers to the movie as the best picture of the year. To be fair, that isn’t the ringing endorsement it usually is when you say it in the middle of February. Although, really, the last six weeks haven’t been that impressive.

It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly the point when Betty White transformed from an elder stateswoman of comedy to "grandma went off her meds," but we love her for it. It seems like whatever she gets up to she continues to surprise us, which is all the more impressive when she keeps doing stuff like this.

So remember, Deadpool gets four Golden Girls from Betty White. We gave it four and a half stars, but that’s pretty much the same thing. We agree that the film is glorious. Are you ready to bring your whole fucked up family of inbreds to the theater to see it together? Deadpool hits theaters on Friday.

Bones is getting older and in recent seasons the show has been changing up formats and adding new characters in order to keep things fresh. For the upcoming 11th season of the drama, Bones is adding a veteran actress in a pretty intriguing role. Betty White is joining Season 11 of Bones, and she’s signed on to play the latest squintern at the Jeffersonian. Let the shenanigans begin.

So far, it seems as if White has only been signed on in a guest-starring capacity, although Bones has a penchant for re-using squinterns that fit in with the team over and over again. It may help that White no longer has responsibilities on Hot in Cleveland, which ended its run on TV Land this June. So, theoretically, she may have more time to pop up in the new season of Fox's procedural, should the writers want to go that route.

While we don’t know if we will see White on the series more than once, we do know which character she will be playing. TV Line reports White has signed on as Dr. Beth Mayer, a woman who is described as the “world’s most experienced” forensic anthropologist. Obviously, since Brennan is usually the most experienced anthropologist in the room, this will cause a little friction between the two women—especially considering Mayer will have 50 years of experience to back her expertise.

When she pops up in late October, the case of the week will feature a dead body related to a fantasy football league. What I find most interesting about this is that it doesn’t seem as if Bones will waste any time getting to the point in terms of getting Brennan and Booth back to the Jeffersonian. We knew the show didn’t want to change casts or sets and would be getting back to the lab we know and love. Still,Bones will be rebooting pretty quickly.

In addition, Bones has featured a revolving cast of squinterns for a long time, but they have often been younger people in the field who are willing to help out and learn from Brennan, Hodgins and the rest of the team. The fact that White’s Mayer is already an expert in her field should mean the case should develop even more smoothly, that is, if Brennan can manage to check her ego.

Bones will feature a six-month time gap when it returns on October 1, and Betty White’s big gig will hit the schedule just a few weeks later. While we don’t know a ton about next season, we do know that Booth will be missing when the series premieres. We also know Fox has a big crossover episode planned for later in the season with the network’s other Thursday night hit, Sleepy Hollow. You can tune in for the big Season 11 premiere on Thursday, October 1 at 8 p.m. ET. In the meantime, here’s what else is coming out this fall.

“The Californians” has been a wildly popular sketch on Saturday Night Live over the past several seasons. It’s no surprise the gang brought the West Coast-based sketch back during NBC’s spectacular SNL 40 special. Even if you aren’t a fan of the sketch that pokes fun at Los Angeles’ penchant for describing travel routes, it’s worth it for one hysterical moment: Getting to watch Betty White make out with Bradley Cooper. You can catch it a little after the 8-minute mark.

That’s right, this version of “The Californians” features a pool boy named Craig (Cooper) who is given the opportunity to work in the home of the rich Californian family. The family is gearing up for an epic party, but unfortunately, one member of the family, Great Aunt Lana, got into a crazy hot air balloon accident and hasn’t been seen from since. In crazy soap opera fashion, Aunt Lana (White) does show up for the party and reveals she spent the time following her hot air balloon accident with the hot hot pool boy. Cue the above ridiculous kiss between the 93-year-old Betty White and 40-year-old Bradley Cooper.

The lengthy sketch also featured guest appearances from SNL alums Kristen Wiig, Fred Armisen, Laraine Newman and Bill Hader, along with other celebrity guest stars Kerry Washington and Taylor Swift. Here's the makeout scene in its full glory.

The sketch originally just started as a funny bit between Hader and Armisen, who used to use those over-the-top California impressions when describing their trips to Los Angeles. Over time, the comedy bit turned into a sketch and the sketch became a staple on the late night series, although it hasn’t been done over the last couple of years as the lineup has changed and alums including Wiig, Hader and Armisen have moved on to other projects. In fact, the only current cast members who appeared on the SNL 40 edition of the sketch were Taran Killam and Kenan Thompson—the latter is expected to leave the late night sketch series at the end of the year.

“The Californians” wasn’t the only sketch revisited during SNL 40 on Sunday night. We also got a brand new “digital short” from Andy Samberg and company, called “That’s When You Break.” Additionally, Will Ferrell and more were on hand for a rowdy game of “Celebrity Jeopardy” (that also included Jim Carrey’s epic Matthew McConaughey impression, among other highlights). Overall, it was a pretty satisfying night.

Flash mobs might not be as trendy as they were just a few years ago, but for 93 year-old actress Betty White, a flash mob is the perfect birthday gift. This week, TV Land released a video of White’s 93rd birthday celebration, which came with a fun hula-themed flash mob that came together on the Hot in Cleveland set. Check it out, below.

There’s actually a story behind the hula-themed flash mob. Apparently, each day on set Betty White’s assistant greets her with a hula dance, which is maybe the cutest thing we’ve heard all week. So, when the actress turned 93 over the weekend, the Hot in Cleveland team decided to up the ante and actually put together a large, complex flash mob that was hula-related. They surprised the actress with this flash mob just a few days ago and taped her reaction, leading to the release of this classic video.

Honestly, it’s easy to dismiss the event as “just another flash mob.” The web has been flooded with flash mobs over the last several years, including numerous flash mob proposals. And shows from Modern Family to The Office have featured flash mobs in episodes. For a while, Fox even had a TV series featuring Howie Mandel that looked at different flash mobs, but the time of the flash mob heyday is long over. It’s easy to crack jokes about Hot in Cleveland being behind the times, and then you see Betty White’s face as she watches her birthday flash mob unfold, and you melt inside. Or, at least you should.

Older people can often be difficult to surprise and even more difficult to shop for when holidays and birthdays roll around, since they've been around for a long time and have most of the things they need already. I love that the Hot in Cleveland team was able to make Betty White’s birthday extra special this year. Unfortunately, it will be the last time. TV Land announced earlier this year that Hot in Cleveland has been cancelled, and the show is currently airing its sixth and final season on the network. Luckily, TV Land already has a few new projects in the works, including Younger starring Hilary Duff, which hits the network in March. A few other TV Land projects are also in the works.

With Hot in Cleveland ending, I wouldn’t be surprised if Betty White retired. Regardless, I hope she has a few more hula-themed flash mobs in her future.
