As someone who watches a lot of movies and TV shows for work, I’m always looking for ways to improve my home theater system, especially when there are tons of great entertainment deals out there for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Philips Sync Box Works On All Genres In Different Ways

Philips Sync Box works in conjunction with Philips Hue lights, so if you don’t have a light strip or other options, you’ll need to purchase those too, but again, it’s worth it. I have the Gradient Light Strip that fits my TV (there are multiple sizes), and there is a package deal for those are well. Once you have it set up, the effect it has on viewing is dramatic. The Sync Box picks up on the colors at the edge of the screen, and the lights seamlessly transition from the screen to light up the sides of the TV, carrying the scene well past the limitations of your screen. It’s a very cool, immersive experience.

You’ll also realize, as I have, that while it seems like it would work best for great sci-fi movies, animated features and shows, and the best action flicks, it actually works well for all genres. It’s easy to see how it would look awesome for those two types of movies, but it’s incredibly effective for dramas, too. I recently watched Train Dreams with my Netflix subscription, and it made one of the most beautiful movies of the year even more dramatic as the colors flowed out from behind my TV.

I love watching concert films, as well, and that is the genre that I love the most. Lights on a stage carrying over and into my living room make it seem like I’m (almost) on stage with the band I’m watching. The reaction speed of the lights is instantaneous, so there isn’t an annoying lag or anything. It’s as close as I’ll ever get to being at The Last Waltz when I watch the movie every year on Thanksgiving.

It Works With Most TVs And Streaming Devices

Whether you have an Apple TV, a Roku, an Amazon Fire TV stick, or almost any other device that you use for streaming, the Sync Box is likely compatible with it. The setup is pretty simple, and there are plenty of YouTube tutorials if you get confused. I know I'm not alone in being in a constant battle with the number of streaming services I'm subscribed to. Factor in bundles and it's become kind of a juggling game to make sure I have what I want (and stop holding onto what I'm not using). Naturally, with so many amazing Black Friday streaming deals, I had to be discerning with which ones I took advantage of this year. When I decided to subscribe to MGM+ using a great Amazon Black Friday deal, I had two goals in mind, and I already accomplished one of them!

The Goals

How this started was that, after watching Stranger Things Season 5 Part 1 with my Netflix subscription this weekend, I was determined to sit down and finally watch The Great Escape. If you're caught up on Stranger Things, you know where this impulse is coming from, and if you don't, well, you probably don't care. Either way, no Stranger Things spoilers ahead, beyond the mention of that movie title. The point is, I'd heard of the 1963 movie starring Steve McQueen, but I'd never actually seen it. Well, I wanted to change that, which was Goal 1:

Finally Watch The Great Escape (Goal Completed ✅)

Having never seen one of the best war movies of all time, the time had come to finally sit down and dedicate the nearly 3 hours it would take to see John Sturges' The Great Escape, and it turned out to be the best kind of Sunday afternoon for me. If you haven't seen it and you think it's your cup of tea, the World War II movie about a group of Allied soldiers attempting to escape a German POW camp is well worth a look.

I did have the option to watch The Great Escape streaming for free (Pluto TV has it), but I opted to take advantage of Amazon's MGM+ and Starz bundle, which offered two months of both services added on to my Prime Video account for just $3.50 a month, after which the price would go $13.99 a month. I think that deal was specific to Black Friday, however, because I don't see it on Amazon anymore, but I'll share some other MGM+-related promotions further down.

Did I subscribe to MGM+ and Starz just to watch one movie? Of course not, which brings us to Goal 2:

Watch More Classics And Older Movies

Looking at MGM+'s catalog, I decided that if I took advantage of this low-price sign-up, I'd make sure to check out some of the films I've heard good things about but have never actually seen, like Sabrina (1954), The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (1967), Roman Holiday (1953), Once Upon a Time in the West (1969), and The Magnificent Seven (1960). And there are older movies that I haven't seen in years that I'd love to revisit, like It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963).

From what I can tell, MGM+ has a ton of movies from more recent years, as well, including some from 2025, like The Naked Gun and Novocaine, but at this point, that's just a bonus. There are so many movies from decades past that I haven't seen, and I want to change that! Who knows, maybe I'll finally get around to watching at least some of the original James Bond movies in order.

And for the record, while it wasn't part of the mentioned goals to go for the MGM+ bundle with Starz, I did jump on that particular deal with Spartacus: House of Ashur's upcoming premiere in mind (though there's a Starz and Hulu bundle deal that might work better for you if you're hoping to catch House of Ashur when it premieres this month.)

Let's get on to the deals. As I said, I don't see the bundle deal I signed up for anymore (Starz and MGM+), which I signed up for this weekend, so that might've just been for Black Friday. But here are a few other deals and bundles, including MGM,+ that Amazon has available right now.

Kylie Jenner showed off stunning bikini vacation pics, leading to speculation about where Timothée Chalamet was. There’s no right or wrong way to celebrate a holiday, but if you were to ask Emily Ratajkowski, it seems she’s ready to move on from the autumn and head right into Christmas festivities.

The model, author and social media personality popped onto social over the weekend, and there wasn’t a cornucopia in sight. Instead, she’s already getting nice and naughty for the holidays, settling into some holiday-approved red lingerie for her Thanksgiving weekend celebration.

The pic was part of her collaboration with Lounge ahead of what the brand calls “gifting season.” This includes everything from red and white bras to underwear sporting cute phrases like “snowflake kisses.” The popular corset style that is everywhere right now is available in holiday colors, too.

Emrata is no stranger to a bikini. She’s been an ambassador for several swimwear and lingerie brands over the years, and even once wore a bikini in a movie theater as a stunt. More recently, she recently joined the likes of Ashley Graham, Behati Prinsloo, Angel Reese and more at the 2025 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Though, the timing of her holiday looks was very spot-on in my opinion.

When I got my Meta Quest VR headset last year, I planned to try to get into some of the cool VR games I'd seen out there, and I have done that. But what I didn't expect was how much I would enjoy taking advantage of my subscriptions to some of the best streaming services to watch movies and the occasional TV show using the VR headset. Does watching movies while in a virtual setting make me feel like I'm Wade Watts from Ready Player One, living my best virtual life in the Oasis? I don't know that I'd go that far, but the experience is really fun, especially for certain platforms.

I have a Meta Quest 2, and while I’m happy with it, I know I'll want to upgrade at some point, so I'm paying particular attention to the Black Friday deals for Meta Quest headsets this year. Here's one of Target's Black Friday deals, which includes a $50 gift card with the purchase of a Meta Quest 3S:

How I Watch Streaming Movies And TV Shows On My Meta Quest

If you're unfamiliar with using a Meta Quest VR Headset to watch streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, Peacock, etc, there are different ways to do it, depending on the platform.

Use The Built-In Browser

This is the most obvious option. I've found the browser to be compatible with several of the streaming platforms I have. I certainly don't want to say that it's compatible with all of them, as I haven't personally tested all or even most of them, but I've tried it out on a few platforms, and it's what I use for Netflix and Paramount+.

Using the Meta Quest's built-in browser means your viewing window is set up in whatever your Home Environment on Meta Quest is. This means you can have other browser windows open to do other things while keeping your movie or TV show playing within view, which is nice if you're a multitasker.

Now that I have Ready Player One on the brain, I just checked, and it's available with a Netflix subscription right now. It'd be a fun movie to watch in a VR headset!

Use The Streaming App

Not all of the streaming platforms have their own dedicated app on Meta Quest. In fact, from what I can tell, most don't, but a few do, including Prime Video, YouTube, and Peacock. The user experience varies with each app, as does the environment (if there is one). Netflix used to have an app for Meta Quest that had you set up in a cozy little living room with a big screen in front of you, but they discontinued the app. I can watch Netflix with the browser, but I do miss that little living room.

Use Big Screen's App

Big Screen's VR app for Meta Quest is really cool. I mainly use it as a virtual movie theater, as I love that I can choose different theater or screening room environments. It really makes watching a movie in VR extra fun, and it honestly gives me that totally focused feeling that I get when watching a movie in the theater. There are other features on Big Screen's app that I haven't tried, like Remote Desktop streaming or joining a public or private screening with other people to watch movies together.

In terms of sitting back and watching a movie or TV show, I would probably use Big Screen most of the time if it were compatible with all of the platforms that I subscribe to, but right now only a handful of platforms are compatible: YouTube, Prime Video, Disney+, Twitch and Pluto TV.

For the paid streaming services to work on Big Screen, you have to be logged in as a subscriber.

Now let's get on to some of the other Black Friday deals I've seen for Meta Quest.

As you likely know, Meta Quest has the 3S and the more expensive 3 (if you're unsure which one is right for you, Tech Radar has a breakdown about the 3 and the 3S that might help). Just like last year, deals for the Meta Quest 3 range from hard to impossible to find this holiday season (so far, anyway), but I did come across these deals from Target and Best Buy, both of which offer a $75 gift card with purchase for the 3. So the price is still the usual price ($499.99), but you at least get the gift card.

The VR experience might not be a good fit for everyone, but if you are thinking about getting a Meta Quest, or you already have one, I do recommend trying it out as a way to watch movies and TV shows. It's one of the things I love to use it for most... well, that and virtual fishing.

There’s Never Been A Better Time To Catch Up On The Book Series

Just last week, the first trailer for Sunrise on the Reaping arrived, which is the Hunger Games installment coming to the 2026 movie release calendar in about a year. If you haven’t read the books, or want to go back and read them (like I do) buying it now and making it your new year’s resolution is an idea. The whole series is 2112 pages, which is an undertaking, sure, but absolutely possible before the new movie.

The latest of Hunger Games movies follows the story of Haymitch Abernathy during the 50th Hunger Games where he is a tribute for District 12. The latest of upcoming book adaptations from Suzanne Collins is a great reason to reread the books because there’s so many characters that return from the original trilogy.

From Effie Trinket, to Plutarch Heavensbee, and characters from the 2nd Quarter Quell in Catching Fire, going back will only enrich your viewing of the movie. I would recommend starting with The Ballad of Songbirds And Snakes, going to his story, and then moving to the original trilogy, so you can follow Haymitch’s arc in chronological order!

And when you get to Sunrise on the Reaping, you can look forward to a fabulous direct connection to the original trilogy that we hope gets a pay off in the upcoming film. The new Hunger Games prequel is coming to theaters on November 20, 2026.

There Are Many Great Reasons To Subscribe To HBO Max

As I mentioned, the latest Game of Thrones spinoff/prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is set to drop in a couple of months. The show, based on a novella series by George R.R. Martin called Tales of Dunk and Egg, stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall, and Dexter Sol Ansell as his squire “Egg,” whose real name is Prince Aegon Targaryen, and who eventually became Aegon V of Westeros.

You've got a bit longer to think about subscribing to Paramount Plus' deal. Both plans are down to just $2.99 a month, though only for your first two months – which is a bit stingy of the service, if you ask me. But it ends on December 4, so, like I said, you have time to think it over.

As much a meditation on grief, isolation and trauma as it is a classic Damon Lindleof puzzle box, the former Lost writer’s adaptation of Tom Perrotta’s novel is at times somber viewing but at others, powerfully uplifting. Set in a world where 2% of the population vanished in an instant, the show follows a small group of characters centred around the Garvey family as they struggle to come to terms with ‘The Departure’ years after the event. Mysteries are posited and questions are raised, but answers are ambiguous. Is there a scientific explanation? Was it the Rapture? Anchored by powerhouse performances from Justin Theroux, Carrie Coon, Christopher Ecclestone, Ann Dowd and more, it’s a show that will leave you thinking long after the credits roll.

The Last of Us takes what was already a phenomenal feat of video-game storytelling and gives it the big-budget HBO treatment. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where a fungal infection has decimated humanity and turned the infected into zombie-like creatures, the story centres on the begrudging father/daughter dynamic of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they journey across the United States and their initially frosty relationship grows into one of love and acceptance. Along the way, there’s plenty of action but it’s the show’s quieter moments that bring the feels, particularly the Nick Offerman-led episode three, which is a quietly devastating story of love in the apocalypse. Season 2 is on the way, but in the meantime, the first season is a perfectly satisfying single serving.

Created by Tom Hanks and Steven Speilberg, World War Two drama Band of Brothers follows "Easy" Company of the 101st Airborne Division as they begin their campaign across Europe. Starting the story in basic training is a genius move, giving us time to grow to love our characters before they are dropped behind enemy lines in France the night before D-Day. From there the action is relentless, with the seemingly unending combat the company faced portrayed in the type of visceral detail Speilberg pioneered in Saving Private Ryan. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Damien Lewis, Dexter Fletcher, Ron Livingston, Michael Culditz, Neal McDonough and more with ‘before they were famous’ appearances from the likes of Michael Fassbender, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Graham, James McAvoy and Tom Hardy. The big draw for Big Little Lies is its outstanding main ensemble. Pulling together the Avengers-like group of Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern and Shailene Woodley, the drama starts with a mysterious death at a school fundraiser and then tells the story of how we ended up there. Peeling back the veneer of the seemingly perfect lives of the upper-class mothers in a small California beach town, the show deals with themes of identity in motherhood, the politics of friendship and the twisted nature of violent relationships. Season 1 is adapted from Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name, and while the less engaging season 2 takes things off-piste, it does introduce a phenomenal performance from Meryl Streep. Shocking, addictive and darkly hilarious, Big Little Lies is a twisted tale you won’t want to miss.

The Rehearsal

Ostensibly a comedic documentary, the opening episodes will be familiar to anyone who’s seen Nathan Fielder’s previous show, Nathan For You. Instead of helping small businesses, this time Fielder has set out to allow people to rehearse important moments in their life before they do them for real. However, when participant Anglea is given the chance to rehearse raising a child from newborn to 18 on an accelerated schedule, Nathan is drawn further and further into the scenario. To say more, would spoil the surprises, but what starts as another crazy social experiment from the filmmaker, by its end becomes a moving meditation on the things we wish we’d done, with an emotional rawness from Fielder that’s only been glimpsed at previously. Debate rages as to the authenticity of what transpires, but if you allow yourself to become lost in the narrative, it’s at times, jaw droppingly beautiful.

Chernobyl

Proving you should never be judged on your previous work, Chernobyl comes from Superhero Movie and Scary Movie 3 writer Craig Mazin. Historically accurate and breathtakingly tense, the show documents the 1986 Chernobyl disaster and the subsequent efforts to clean up (and cover up). Praised for its historical accuracy, the show received no less than 19 Emmy nominations, winning for writing and directing. And rightly so – it’s a haunting portrayal of a disaster that could only happen, and could only have been resolved the way it was, in such a specific time and place. The whole show moves at a breakneck pace as various parties scramble to resolve the disaster, but some of the specific set pieces are terrifying, all the more so knowing they’re based on real events. The breathless descent into the plant post-disaster, the frantic removal of irradiated substance and the shocking decline of a first responder firefighter are all images that will stay with you long after the five episodes have concluded.

A socially awkward filmmaker documenting his attempts at some of life’s most mundane tasks doesn’t sound like a recipe for some of the best TV in recent years, but How To with John Wilson takes viewers on a journey through some of the most interesting pockets of society to create a heartwarming show about life, relationships and just about everything else that makes us human. The show is all shot and edited by Wilson, though he rarely appears on camera. What we do get is an almost omnipresent voiceover from him, endearingly rambling and stuttering over the top of montage footage of New York City. While each episode posits a ‘How To…’ question at the start, it’s the tangents the search for an answer takes Wilson on that make the show so watchable. A quest to find out how to remember your dreams takes us to an Avatar fan club, while attempting to discover how to watch the game leads to a vacuum cleaner enthusiast convention that builds to a surprisingly emotional conclusion. It’s life-affirming stuff, and worth watching just to see what sort of crazy journeys (physically and emotionally) each episode will take you on.

Ghosts is about as gentle and cozy as comedy gets – an old country house setting, hilarious misunderstandings, a wonderfully diverse cast of characters and a swelling emotional heart. When Sam (Rose McIver) inherits said house from a distant relative, her and husband Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) think their dreams have come true. But after an accident leaves Sam with the ability to see ghosts, she realises they have quite the array of unexpected housemates. And it’s this group of giggling ghouls that really bring the show to life, including Viking Thorfin (Devan Chandler Long), Revolution-era Army Captain Issac (Brandon Scott Jones) and Prohibition-era lounge singer Alberta (Danielle Pinnock). Expect to laugh, a lot, but don’t be surprised if the show’s occasional musings on lost love, regret and acceptance have you shedding a tear or two. And if you just can’t get enough ghostly goings on, the original, and equally superb, British version can also be streamed on Paramount Plus.

Heading Down Under, Colin From Accounts is an Australian romcom that has become a feel good sensation worldwide. After perpetual singles Ashley (Harriet Dyer) and Gordon (Patrick Brammall) are brought together through a car accident and an injured dog (that’s Colin), they gradually begin to let their guard down as they navigate the trials and tribulations of life together. The crackling chemistry between Dyer and Brammall is no surprise – they’re married IRL – but the fact the pair also wrote the show together means it plays directly into their talents, with the whip-smart dialogue rolling off the tongue. It’s great to see Brammall in particular finally getting his flowers after excellent turns in other Aussie comedies The Moodys and No Activity (and its US remake). With two seasons available, Colin From Accounts is perfect fall viewing.

A story any parent of a certain vintage can relate to, Howard is laughed out of store after store before turning to the black market, radio show giveaways and crooked Santas, all the while facing competition from Sinbad’s increasingly manic mailman Myron. It’s daft, it’s silly, but it’s a whole lot of fun and packed full of nostalgia for those among us that still pine for Christmas in the 90s.

Not your typical holiday movie, Gremlins is nonetheless packed full of Christmas vibes as the small town of Kingston Falls is besieged by mischievous monsters. When Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan) is gifted a small creature called a Mogwai for Christmas, there’s just three rules to follow. But when one is inadvertently broken, so begins a night of carnage and chaos. Wickedly funny, endlessly innovative and just a little bit scary, Gremlins is perfect for those looking for something a little darker this holiday season. Directed by Joe Dante and written by Home Alone director Chris Colombus, it’s also riotously entertaining, with all the charm you’d expect from something produced by Steven Speilberg. The practical effects alone make it worth a watch as the Gremlins are brought to life, but it’d be a real Scrooge that didn’t fall in love with Mogwai Gizmo the second he appears on screen.

An American holiday classic coming, bizarrely, from the director of Black Christmas, A Christmas Story is a nostalgic, dreamy journey through childhood as young Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) experiences the highs and lows of the festive season. There’s scary Santas, tongues stuck to lamp posts and lamps shaped like legs, but it all comes together to create a wonderful portrayal of the most magical time of the year for a kid, whether you get that Red Ryder B.B. gun or not. And while you’re there, check out the belated sequel A Christmas Story Christmas which follows the now adult Ralphie returning to his childhood home to give his children the kind of magical Christmas he remembers. There’s old friends, plenty of mishaps and a reconciliation with the death of The Old Man that packs quite the emotional punch. A Christmas Story is your main present, but the sequel is a perfectly entertaining stocking filler.

From picking the perfect tree and managing the in-laws to putting up the best festive lights in town, Clark’s hapless efforts are chock full of holiday hilarity. Definitely one for adults only, Seth Rogen teams up with the guys behind This is the End and Neighbours to apply his usual brand of stoner humour to the holidays. Rogen plays Issac, who, along with friends Ethan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Chris (Anthony Mackie), spends each Christmas Eve getting wasted in NYC. But with adulthood hitting them like a sleigh, it’s a tradition that’s set to come to an end – but not before they find a way to the Nutcracka-Ball – the holy grail of Christmas parties. Along the way there’s karaoke, a giant piano and a hilarious scene involving Rogen, a church and a bag of drugs. Not festive family fare then, but for those looking for an alternative to the syrupy sweet movies that usually get played on rotation at this time of year The Night Before is a must-see.

With a diverse range of shorts covering everything from murderous Santas, killer deer, cannibals and ghosts in the form of westerns, silent films, sci-fi and more, it’d be a real Grinch that couldn’t find at least a handful of films to enjoy in this Christmas collection.

And when a sadistic and spoiled rich kid finds nothing but coal in their stocking, things go from bad to worse for the unorthodox Santa as a hitman (Walton Goggins) is sent his way, out for revenge. Somewhat of a slow burn, when the carnage finally does begin in Fatman, it’s epic, 80s action movie type stuff with Gibson’s grizzled performance a perfect alternate take on Mr Claus.

This underrated Steve Martin comedy follows the workers of a crisis hotline in Venice Beach on Christmas Eve as they deal with the threat of eviction, a serial strangler on the loose and a twisted love triangle. Throughout the night, they cross paths with penniless parents to be, a depressed drag artist, a wacky song-writer and more, just trying to make it to Christmas morning. Martin swings effortlessly between the deadpan and the madcap, and a supporting cast of diverse characters keep the film ticking along nicely. Mixed Nuts was Nora Ephron’s follow up to Sleepless in Seattle, and while by no means a classic on that level, is still a must watch for those who prefer the darker side of the holidays.

Unsurprisingly, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are an ideal time to purchase streaming devices like Fire Sticks, Roku devices, and Apple TVs. And there are plenty of great discounts still available today.

Despite writing about tech and sniffing out deals for more than 10 years, the main TV in my living room is still an old Samsung that I bought years ago – it doesn't even have apps. My lack of fully featured TV hasn't been a massive problem as I use my PlayStation to login into many of my subscriptions. I tend to leave it in one of the TV's HDMI ports and use it if I want to watch something on a platform that the PS4 doesn't support. Plus, – much like CinemaBlend's Sean O'Connell taking his Firestick to every press junket – I shove it in my case when I travel for when I have an evening in and want to catch some live sport or binge episodes of Mad Men again.

I also find that these devices are ideal Christmas Tree fodder. I've lost count of the amount of my... more mature relatives that I've brought kicking and screaming into the 21st century with a Fire Stick or Chromecast. Just bear in mind that you're probably signing up for a half-an-hour tutorial, too!

It's really affordable at $1.99 a month, and it's got a great track record of being able to unblock streaming services. It also offers reliable security, and it's speedy, as stated in sister site Tom's Guide's Surfshark review.

Of course, most important of all for us, it's also very good at unblocking and a more affordable option if Nord is a bit steep for you. It also offers unlimited connections.

There are cheaper subscriptions out there where Black Friday VPN deals are concerned, including Privado's $1.48 a month deal, and FastestVPN's Lifetime Plan, which costs you a one-off payment of $23. This works out as a pretty solid rate of as little as... Well, it depends how long you live for, I guess. But, as I said, Surfshark is definitely one of the top providers out there, especially when still seeking quality.

First up is Peacock's $1.99 a month deal on its Premium plan. This comes ad-supported, but boasts a pretty cozy catalog of on-demand content including feel good sitcoms like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Office US, and all the Real Housewives iterations you could want.

While I definitely enjoy the fact that the Lord of the Rings trilogy can be streamed with a Max subscription, it's not guaranteed to remain. Is This The Cheapest Hulu Has Ever Been?

Hulu's 2024 Black Friday deal is the lowest price the service has ever been, yes. It's not the first time we've seen it, however. Hulu first introduced its 99 cents deal in 2020. The following couple of years saw Hulu reduce its With-Ads plan significantly, but not quite as low as the legendary $0.99 deal, instead opting for a $1.99 a month price point for two years on the trot.

In 2023, though, the 99 cents deal returned, making this the third time subscribers have been able to subscribe – made even more delicious when you consider the plan saw its first price increase in a while from $7.99 a month to $9.99 a month. Having just returned to Apple TV Plus, you can now watch Bad Sisters Season 2, with new episodes dropping every week up until Christmas. The Garvey sisters return with Grace having well and truly moved on from JP's death, about to get hitched to Ian. But when another dead body turns up, Grace, Eva, Ursula, Bibi, and Becka are once again under the scrutiny of the Garda, with new eyes revisiting JP's "accidental death". The first season was excellent entertainment. Did any of us need or expect a second season? No, maybe not. But I'm enjoying it thus far, and executive producer Sharon Horgan proves there's plenty more story still to tell.

And there are plenty of doorbusters online, making this a great time to upgrade your home cinema setup without paying over the odds. Because, really, what's the point of making the most of the best Black Friday streaming deals if your set-up isn't up to scratch?

Here are some of the best Black Friday deals around right now across TVs, soundbars, speakers (yes, there's a difference, and streaming sticks.

There are some incredibly low prices on some impressive TVs, including the LG 48-inch B4 OLED down from its original $1,499 to $649 at Best Buy, Samsung's 55-inch The Frame down from $1,499 to $849 at Samsung, and Sony's beautiful Bravia 8 55-inch, which is down from $1,699 to $1,399.

If you asked me to recommend one thing that would improve any TV, I'd say a soundbar: even the best TVs typically have fairly weedy sound systems, and if you want the full movie soundtrack experience then a good soundbar would be a vast improvement. And a fancy setup like the JBL Bar 9.1 would be even more vast. That's down from $1,199 to $799.99 at Amazon while Samsung's excellent HW-990D is down from $1,997 to $1,049 at Walmart.

Black Friday streaming device deals

Adding a good streamer doesn't get much cheaper than this: Amazon's Fire TV Stick HD is down from $39.99 to $17.99, which is the same as some new movies cost to rent for one night. The even better Fire TV Stick 4K Max is down from $59.99 to $32.99. I'm not currently seeing any good deals on the Apple TV 4K, which is the streaming device I bought for myself and the one I recommend if you're not on a tight budget, but I'm optimistic that some deals on that will drop in the next couple of days.

It's only HD so you'll need a more powerful model for bigger, higher res TVs. But this is about as cheap as streaming gets, and it's a typically Amazon affair when it comes to ease of use. A good one to get the in-laws as a gift.View Deal

Black Friday surround sound deals

I'm not going to list lots of speaker deals because I'd be here forever and you'd fall asleep: there are tons. But if you're into serious surround sound then there are some really nice deals out there on AV receivers.

I love Onkyo amps – I've got one at the heart of my hi-fi setup - and this deal on the TX-SR494 7.2-channel AV receiver is a doozy: it's $150 off at Best Buy, bringing the price down to $299. The 5.2-channel Sony STRD-H590 is $100 off, down to a very reasonable $249.99. And I can attest that the Sony STRDH790, a 7.2 model with Atmos and Dolby Vision, is a good buy at $349; that's the AV receiver I use when it's movie time at home, and mine cost an awful lot more than that when I bought it during lockdown. It's a brilliant buy.

Onkyo are very well known in hi-fi circles because they make affordable amplification that punches way above its price tag: instead of trying to impress you with bells and whistles they focus on quality core components. This is a great price for a well-specced 7.2-channel AV receiver. View Deal

Sadly pickings were slimmer among the computer accessories, but I did manage to find a rather nice red mouse: Logitech's M325s wireless ambidextrous mouse, down $5. Not a huge saving, I know. But that brings the total down to just fifteen bucks.

Could I find a red camera? The Fujifilm Instax on Walmart was close but not close enough in its fetching pink, down $68 to $99, and while I liked its looks I felt that the Insta360 Ace Pro Action Camera at B&H Photo and Video with its red-accented GoPro-esque design was probably a bit of a reach too. Nice price, though: $50 off, bringing it down to just $299.99. But at last I managed to find a properly red one on the same site: the OM System Tough TG-7, down $50 to $499.99.

Time to hit Target with its reassuringly red logo, where straightaway I found red-nosed reindeer women's slippers for $30, a $10 saving. There was tons of other Santa-themed stuff but I felt that would be cheating, so I hit the tech section instead and found the JBL Flip 6 in a nice red colorway for $79.95, a $50 saving.

I love JBL's portable speakers, and the Flip sits right in the middle of the range: big enough to get the party started but not so big you'll pull a muscle moving it. It's particularly good for bass, delivering serious low-end thump. View Deal

Target's home section turned out to be something of a Santa's grotto: the first page of home deals included a rather fetching red Staub roasting dish, down from $71 to $49. Is a Grenadine Staub skillet a red one? I'm saying yes. That's down from a frightening $386 to a slightly less frightening $269.99. Staub seems to be a pretty good brand for red things: I found lots of bakeware and cookware in various reddish hues.

This 11-inch cast iron traditional skillet comes in a range of cool colors, but this grenadine option is my favorite. The pan arrives pre-seasoned and hits the sweet spot: cast iron is really heavy so you don't want a skillet that's too big, but you want one big enough for those big steaks.
