Here's the thing about Bad Bunny. If you didn't know anything about him prior to his amazing performance at the SuperBowl, then I'm sure you know about him now. His was, after all, the most-watched Halftime Show in history, and he knocked it out of the stadium.

However, film fans and entertainment enthusiasts have known about Bad Bunny for quite some time now. For instance, he's such a good wrestler that Cody Rhodes wants him to appear at this upcoming WrestleMania (and he really should, since the fans are demanding he take on Logan Paul). But, it doesn’t just stop with wrestling, as the Puerto Rican rapper and singer is more than just “The King of Latin Trap.” He’s also a talented actor.

Here are just a few of his roles outside of the recording studio.

He’s Made Interesting Appearances In Movies Like Bullet Train, Caught Stealing, And Cassandro

Bad Bunny made his feature film debut in F9, but it was such a blink-and-you-miss-it moment that I wouldn’t really rave about it. However, his second role, in Bullet Train, which we were big fans of in our review, is a different story entirely. In Bullet Train, Bunny plays an assassin with the codename “The Wolf,” which is apropos since he sometimes howls after a kill.

“The Wolf” honestly has one of the most interesting backstories in the entire film, with him having a genuine reason for wanting revenge that revolves around mass murder at his wedding, only for the character to go out in the most ludicrous way possible.

Still, it works completely since Bad Bunny sells the gimmick, just like he does in the squared circle. Speaking of wrestling, Cassandro, which has a pretty great cast, was another interesting performance from the star. Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, is often viewed as an icon in the Latin queer community for being an LGBTQ ally. And, you get a sense of that with his bravery in Cassandro, where he plays a character named Felipe who is attracted to the titular gay wrestler, played by Gael Garcia Bernal.

I think my favorite performance by Bad Bunny, though, might be his most recent role in Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing, which I think is the director’s most enjoyable film to date. With the hair and the goatee, I honestly didn’t even recognize Bad Bunny. That’s actually what made me want to write this article in the first place, as Bad Bunny has done something that very few other actors have managed to do for me, and that’s completely disappear into a role, which is no small feat!

He’s Also Appeared On The Simpsons

I’m going to be completely transparent with you. The first Bad Bunny song I’ve ever heard was “Te Deseo Lo Mejor,” and it was on The Simpsons. In fact, it was one of their shorts. It was actually a music video where the spirit of Bad Bunny (I don’t know what else to call it) is floating around and helping Homer get back with Marge.

Now, I know Bad Bunny didn’t really have to do any “acting” per se since the animators did all the work. I also know that Bad Bunny didn’t have to do any singing since the song appears on his album, El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo. But, can I just say that this is wonderful synergy? Do you know what it reminds me of? It reminds me of when Tiny Toon Adventures had that episode where they made music videos for They Might Be Giants.

That’s the first time I ever heard songs like “Particle Man” and their version of “Istanbul (Not Constantinople),” and this short was the first time that I ever got to not only hear Bad Bunny, but, more importantly, to SEE Bad Bunny. Yes, it was animation, but there’s so much of his personality here that I would add it into how talented he is, even if it’s just in cartoon form.

Bad Bunny is set to star in a new movie called Porto Rico (fitting) with Javier Bardem and Edward Norton. We’ll keep you posted on that.

Many actors have said that a villain is one of the most fun types of roles that you can play. Unfortunately, not every actor knows how to be menacing, or at least just not in a way that matches the tone or intent of their given story. The following are some of the most notable examples of movies and TV shows that might have benefited from searching a bit harder for the right person to play the enemy.

Lex Luthor (Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice)

There are few superhero movies as polarizing as 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but one thing most audiences agree about director Zack Snyder's crossover epic is that it misses the mark with Lex Luthor. It seems Academy Award nominee Jessie Eisenberg, who blamed himself for his role's poor reception, is trying more to be a clone of Heath Ledger's Joker without the makeup than portray a fitting take on Superman's archnemesis with his manic, almost childish, performance.

Walter Padick (The Dark Tower)

Some fans of Stephen King's acclaimed book series, The Dark Tower, have said that Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey might have been a better fit to portray the heroic gunslinger, Roland, allowing Idris Elba to shine stronger as the demonic sorcerer Walter Padick instead. Of course, the casting is one of the least pivotal reasons why this 2017 adaptation from director Nikolaj Arcel received such horrid backlash.

Eddie Brock (Spider-Man 3)

On an episode of MovieFone’s Unscripted, Topher Grace admitted that he felt he was an unlikely choice to star in 2007's Spider-Man 3 as Eddie Brock, also known as Venom, given the character looks more like... well, Tom Hardy. What convinced him to take the part was director Sam Raimi's idea of depicting the photojournalist, who becomes attached to a symbiotic alien, as, essentially, Peter Parker's evil twin. With all due respect to the man behind the Evil Dead movies and to the former That '70s Show cast member, that might not have been the best call.

Gellert Grindelwald (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald)

While his presence alone is distracting enough, fans and critics alike thought Johnny Depp was too cartoonishly over-the-top as the villainous title role of the Harry Potter movie prequel, 2018's Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The performance especially pales in comparison to Mads Mikkelsen, who succeeded the Oscar nominee in the part for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore to greater acclaim.

Jafar (Aladdin)

I am not saying that no one else could play Jafar better than how Jonathan Freeman voiced the ruthless tyrant in the original 1992 classic Disney animated movie, Aladdin. However, I do believe that Marwan Kenzari is simply too reserved, too earnest, and not having enough fun with this iconic, dastardly role in Guy Ritchie's live-action remake from 2019.

Mr. Freeze (Batman & Robin)

I must admit, I actually think Arnold Schwarzenegger's shamelessly over-the-top performance and incessantly punny dialogue as the "coldhearted" Gotham criminal, Mr. Freeze, almost makes the reviled Batman & Robin worth watching. However, I would also agree that the 1997 DC flick offers a poor representation of the tragic character, especially after Batman: The Animated Series handled him to such wonderful acclaim a few years before.

Javert (Les Misérables)

With 2012's Les Misérables, director Tom Hooper did not just adapt Victor Hugo's novel, but the acclaimed, operatic stage musical it inspired. Perhaps if it had been a more traditionally dramatized version of the story instead, the Academy Award-winning non-singer Russell Crowe's casting as Inspector Javert would have been perfect.

Obadiah Stane (Iron Man)

This may be a hot take, but I believe 2008's otherwise terrific premiere installment of the Marvel Movies in order suffers from a third act that does not quite live up to its promises, and I think Obadiah Stane is to blame. As a longtime fan of Jeff Bridges, I hate to admit that the Academy Award winner's performance in Iron Man is not menacing or memorable enough to make an enduring impression or match Robert Downey Jr.'s fun, nuanced, and tone-setting performance as Tony Stark

Balem Abrasax (Jupiter Ascending)

There are many reasons why Lana and Lily Wachowski's 2015 sci-fi epic Jupiter Ascending ended up being a critical and commercial failure, and many critics cite Eddie Redmayne as a key reason. Even the Oscar winner himself agreed, while filming a video for GQ, that his over-the-top performance as Balem Abrasax, consisting of a gravelly whisper often interrupted by irritating screams, was "pretty bad."

Norman Bates (Psycho)

Gus Van Sant's 1998 remake of Alfred Hitchcock's classic film, Psycho, sees Vince Vaughn succeed Anthony Perkins in the role of disturbed motel manager Norman Bates. The actor was already an unlikely choice to play a murderer then, fresh off his hilarious performance in Swingers, and seems even more unlikely today after his many other iconic comedic roles.

The Joker (Suicide Squad)

For many, Jared Leto's Joker in Suicide Squad is the go-to example of a badly cast villain, but having seen his more subdued take on the Clown Prince of Crime in Zack Snyder's Justice League, I disagree that the Oscar winner was the wrong choice. I will agree that his performance in David Ayer's 2016 DC supervillain crossover is a misfire, but I also feel that this particular iteration of Batman's archnemesis fails mostly because of how the disparagingly rushed screenplay depicts him.

Dracula (Blade: Trinity)

I will say that I give credit to writer and director David S. Goyer for attempting to try something different when incorporating the most powerful vampire of all into the third installment of the Wesley Snipes-led Marvel movie franchise. However, Dominic Purcell just does not fit the bill as Dracula, aesthetically or otherwise, contributing substantially to the unremarkable legacy of Blade: Trinity.

Thomas Gabriel (Live Free Or Die Hard)

I remember hearing movie critic Richard Roeper, on an episode of Ebert & Roeper, say he would have rather seen Maggie Q, who plays a henchperson, take over the main villain role in Bruce Willis' fourth adventure as John McClane instead of Timothy Olyphant. As much as I enjoy the actor in almost everything he does, I cannot help but agree that he might have been a better henchperson than the mustache-twirling lead cyberterrorist in 2007's Live Free or Die Hard.

Ares (Wonder Woman)

I realize that casting David Thewlis as the God of War, disguised as the speaker for the peace Sir Patrick Morgan, was meant to be a misdirect, and I respect the intent. However, most people agree that the final act reveal was one of the weakest parts of 2017's Wonder Woman, which is otherwise considered one of the better installments of the DC Extended Universe.

Griffin (The Watcher)

In defense of Keanu Reeves, the actor told The Guardian he was tricked into starring in 2000's The Watcher, which he never found interesting, after a "friend" forged his signature onto a casting agreement and, since he had no evidence to prove it, he decided it would be easier to go through with it than getting sued. This explains his phoned-in performance in the panned serial killer drama as a menacing murderer, whom star James Spader probably would have handled much better instead of playing the hero.

Lex Luthor (Supergirl)

Forgive me, but I just find it so difficult to see Jon Cryer outside of his longtime role as Alan Harper on Two and a Half Men. Even with the shaved scalp and beard drastically altering his appearance, the Pretty in Pink actor is simply not very believable as the ruthless Lex Luthor on Supergirl and other installments of the Arrowverse.

Two-Face (Batman Forever)

Harvey "Two-Face" Dent may be an unstable psychopath, but he is not the cackling maniac that Tommy Lee Jones portrayed him as, as if he were trying to one-up Jim Carrey's scenery-chewing energy as The Riddler. It really makes you wonder why the otherwise brilliant Academy Award winner told the comedian that he "could not sanction [his] buffoonery" when he ultimately gives the more buffoonish performance in 1995's Batman Forever anyway.

Carlton "Riot" Drake (Venom)

Riz Ahmed is typically sensational in just about everything he does, from his Emmy-winning performance in The Night Of to his Oscar-nominated turn in Sound of Metal. However, he gives one of his most boring performances in 2018's Venom as Carlton Drake, a scientist who obsessively and insidiously leads a study of extraterrestrial symbiotes.

The White Death (Bullet Train)

Michael Shannon has played some fantastic antagonistic roles in the past, such as in Premium Rush and 99 Homes, and even in the otherwise polarizing Man of Steel. However, his attempt at playing an Eastern European criminal known as "The White Death" is almost too silly, even for a consciously silly action flick like Bullet Train.

Stanley Kowalski (A Streetcar Named Desire)

Perhaps it is a controversial choice to choose one of the great Marlon Brando's most praised performances as a miscast villain. However, the Tennessee Williams-penned play that inspired 1951's A Streetcar Named Desire is really about Blanche (Vivien Leigh), and you could argue that casting Stella's (Kim Hunter) abusive husband with one of Hollywood's most handsome and charismatic actors shifts the focus in the wrong direction.

Poppy Adams (Kingsman: The Golden Circle)

I would not say that Julianne Moore is necessarily bad in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, the 2017 sequel to Matthew Vaughn's hit comedic spy thriller. However, there is something about seeing her gleefully chewing the scenery as the unusually charming, but psychopathic, cartel leader, Poppy Adams, that still feels a bit off.

Rodney Alcala (Woman Of The Hour)

Star and director Anna Kendrick's Woman of the Hour is based on the true story of Rodney Alcala, a convicted serial killer whose charming personality and classic good looks earned him a win on The Dating Game. However, Daniel Zovatto not only looks barely anything like the guy, but also does not quite pull off the same charm when trying to court Cheryl Bradshaw (Kendrick) in the game show scenes. He is quite terrifying in depictions of his murder spree, though.

Blackheart (Ghost Rider)

Wes Bentley plays a strong, antagonistic force in the Yellowstone cast as Jamie Dutton, so I suppose the secret is casting him in more grounded, vindictive roles. However, he is not quite the right match for powerful, supernatural entities like Blackheart, whom he plays in 2007's Nicolas Cage-led Marvel movie, Ghost Rider.

Travis Marshall (Dexter)

In theory, Colin Hanks is a perfect choice for the big bad of Dexter's sixth season, Travis Marshall – a seemingly mild-mannered man driven to murder by religious fanatic, Prof. James Gellar (played by Edward James Olmos). However, the moment he realizes Gellar is a figment of his imagination and embraces his dark side is the moment the otherwise affable actor's performance as a sinister killer becomes a tragic misfire.

Miranda Tate/Talia Al Ghul (The Dark Knight Rises)

Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard is not a bad choice to play Miranda Tate, who is really Ra's Al Ghul's vengeful daughter, Talia, in disguise, in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises. Unfortunately, the French actor's performance in the polarizing finale to Christopher Nolan's trilogy of Batman films will forever be overshadowed by her hilariously inept death scene.

Adrian (Oldboy)

The world never needed Spike Lee's remake of Oldboy in the first place. However, the usually impressive Sharlto Copley makes an especially convincing case for its needlessness with a performance that paints his villainous role as more of a whiney brat than a vengeful sadist.

Gabriel (Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning)

In a series that has only ever had one enduringly memorable villain (Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Owen Davian in Mission: Impossible III), the rest seem as scary as they come when compared to the egregious, mustache-twirling nature of Esai Morales' role, who gives an even more ridiculous performance in 2025's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning.

Dr. Norman Spencer (What Lies Beneath)

Following a career defined by heroic characters like Star Wars' Han Solo, Indiana Jones, and President James Marshall in Air Force One, it is just really hard to picture Harrison Ford as a murderer. You could argue that the actor's reputation makes the chilling reveal in What Lies Beneath even more shocking, but others have argued it just comes off as unbelievable.

Raymond Blossom (Playing God)

Based on his Academy Award-winning role in Ordinary People, Timothy Hutton is an undeniably fantastic actor, but his role as Raymond Blossom in 1997's Playing God is not his best work. He plays the ruthless counterfeiter a little too cheesily to match the tone of this crime thriller starring David Duchovny as a disgraced surgeon hired on Blossom's payroll.

Col. Tom Parker (Elvis)

There may be a heightened sense of reality in 2022's Elvis, Baz Luhrmann's biopic of the legendary musician. However, Tom Hanks' prosthetic makeup and faux European accent as Elvis Presley's manager, Col. Tom Parker, is too inauthentic and silly to be taken seriously.

Abigail Williams (The Crucible)

With all due respect to the otherwise talented Winona Ryder, her casting in 1996's The Crucible as a young woman who corrupts her entire village with lies about witchcraft is just not very believable, from her subpar accent to her lack of chemistry with Daniel Day-Lewis as a married man she shares an affair with.

Dr. Newton "Newt" Geiszler (Pacific Rim Uprising)

Charlie Day starred in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim in the obligatory role you see in all kinds of sci-fi/disaster flicks: the plucky comic relief who is never taken seriously despite having all the right answers. For 2018's Pacific Rim Uprising, Dr. Newton "Newt" Geiszler is brought back as the villain, which is already a tough sell before his motivation (being corrupted by an alien he has had a romantic relationship with) descends the sequel into unforgivable levels of cheesiness.

There’s been a lot of recent 2025 movie releases that have been lukewarmly received by critics, but loved by audiences. For instance, critics were angrier than a Red Hulk over Captain American: Brave New World with a 49% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences gave the MCU flick an 80%. The same could be said about Mel Gibson’s Flight Risk, which survived terrible reviews but still received a 63% audience score. Well, internet users are going back to more examples throughout film history of times when critics were wrong about movies that resonated with audiences. I have to admit, some of them are real doozies.

Critics and audiences tend to have differing opinions on what makes a great movie. This is all the more reason why it’s beneficial that Rotten Tomatoes added a new Popcornmeter to show an audience score matters just as much when judging if a movie is worth seeing. Internet users are proving more and more how an audience’s opinion varies from the critics with an X feed showing some real doozy of examples:

Bullet Train (Critics 54%, Audiences 76%)

@RealEmirHan started an X feed of movies critics were wrong about. They started off with Brad Pitt’s Bullet Train, which got it a low 54% from critics scores, but audiences a 76%. While critics called it “weak” and “shooting nothing but blanks,” many enjoyed the 2022 action flick for being funnier than you’d guess and its high-intense fight scenes.

Jumper (Critics 15%, Audiences 44%)

@Dalton_Walsh called the teleportation movie Jumper a “fun” movie that deserved a higher rating. Unfortunately, the Hayden Christensen-led flick is an example of a poor movie with a great plot. It’s a cool concept to transport wherever you want but fails to fully explore the world between Jumpers and those trying to eradicate them.

Waiting…(Critics 29%, Audiences 75%)

One of Ryan Reynolds’ earliest smart-ass roles before Deadpool was Waiting…, which was about the comedy antics of restaurant employees. @MatthewFalker pointed out what a “must” the low-reviewed indie comedy was and even more relatable if you work in the food service industry. Even if critics weren’t chucking at the flick’s comedy, audiences found it humorous enough to consider it a classic.

Man on Fire (Critics 38%, Audiences 89%)

It’s hard to believe that one of the best action movies of the 2000s, Man on Fire, got a Rotten score of 38%, as brought up by @JonKatz79. Some would argue it’s one of Denzel Washington’s best works, and he had memorable chemistry with his young co-star Dakota Fanning. Even Jenna Ortega credited the action-thriller for getting her into acting. Clearly, it still hit the hearts of audiences.

With so many examples of audiences favoring a movie more than the critics, it’s clear that audiences have their own elements of what makes a movie worth their time. If a movie can evoke positive feelings despite its flaws, it’s a success in its own right.

Tom Cruise has his running, Samuel L. Jackson has his cussing, and Brad Pitt has his eating. Over the years, the Fight Club actor has been seen eating on screen more than anyone else who’s ever stepped in front of a camera, even professional eaters. If you look at Pitt’s best movies like Seven, the Ocean’s trilogy, and even great Quentin Tarantino films, you’ll watch his characters eat everything from popcorn to burgers and shrimp cocktails to chips (so many chips).

David Leitch is a former stuntman who has become an accomplished director, so we can expect that any action in his movies is going to go the extra mile. That was certainly the case with Bullet Train which had some incredible action including a complex fight sequence with Brad Pitt and Brian Tyree Henry that, despite it's fixed location, took a lot of extra work to film.

Appearing on Corridor Crew, David Leitch spoke about the “silent” fight scene in Bullet Tain, which sees Brad Pitt and Brian Tyree Henry attempt to kill each other while trying not to bother the rest of the people in the quiet car. Leitch explained that the setup for the sequence was incredibly complex because, in addition to being a good action sequence, the scene also had to serve the comedy. Leitch explained…

Action sequences usually require a lot of setups to get the action from many different angles, unless there’s a particular design to do more impressive one-shot sequences or otherwise long takes. But 60 setups is a lot considering the actual fight scene in Bullet Train is all of about a minute long. Still, the sequence is both beautifully choreographed as an action scene, and also quite funny, so the movie balances the two things quite well.

The scene sees Brad Pitt and Bryan Tyree Henry as two hired guns chasing the same goal. This leads to an altercation where the two try to kill each other in public view of others while trying to go unnoticed, especially since the pair are sitting in the “quiet car” of a high-speed train. Check it out.

David Leitch says he's always been a fan of comedy, but he credits his time on Deadpool 2 and working with Ryan Reynolds for helping him hone his abilities when it comes to doing action and comedy in equal measure. He says that experience will “never leave” him and he’s carrying it forward into his other projects. That certainly worked here.

Leitch’s newest film, The Fall Guy certainly follows in the footsteps of Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train as it never slows down when it comes to the action and then stunts, but it never sacrifices the comedy of the film either.

When I think of modern-day stars that have slowly started to gain a fanbase over many years, plenty come to mind. I could think of maybe Noah Centineo from the young adult movie trilogy To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, or even go way back to the rise of Zendaya’s career on the Disney Channel – and there are plenty of great things out there to watch if you love Zendaya now. 

But today we’ll be talking about someone that I’ve followed for a decent amount of time: actress Joey King. Appearing in some of my favorite movies as a kid but only continuing to grow in her acting skills, King is a young but formidable actress and one who knows how to deliver both comedic performances and dramatic ones.

Ramona and Beezus (2010)

First up on this list has to be Ramona and Beezus. Starring King and Selena Gomez, the movie is based on the book series of the same name and follows Ramona’s adventures in her messy world while causing mayhem, especially to her older sister, Beatrice – otherwise known as Beezus. 

This movie was released when I wasn’t even a teenager, but I remember holding it dearly in my heart for a long time. I loved watching King’s performance because she reminded me of myself as a kid, and now, as an adult, I still find a lot of joy in this sweet, family movie.

The Act (2019)

I think this is where many people started to hear more about King. The Act was one of the best Hulu original shows and was based on the real-life case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a young woman who worked with her then-boyfriend to kill her mother, who was abusing her. 

The Act was one of the many times back in the late 2010s when I realized that King would act her butt off. She was terrific in this role, and she earned a nomination at the Primetime Emmy Awards for her performance as well. I don’t think anything King has done since then has surpassed this performance, but I know with time she’ll end up having another momentous role like this one.

The In Between (2022)

In 2022, Joey King starred in the Paramount Plus original film, The In Between. The film stars Joey King and Kyle Allen and is a sci-fi romance that details the story of two young adults, Tessa and Skylar, who fall in love, but tragedy strikes, and Skylar is killed in a car accident. Tessa believes that Skylar is reaching out to her from the afterworld, so she takes it upon herself to see what he is looking for. 

Because of Joey King starring in infamous The Kissing Booth series (especially the third, which just didn’t make sense), I didn’t know if I wanted to see her in another romance movie so soon, but she kills it here. Her and Allen’s chemistry is off the charts, and I appreciate how the story is unlike anything we see in a young adult romance. It’s a lovely film to watch on a chill Saturday afternoon and enjoy King’s performance.

The Conjuring (2013)

If you want to check out one of the best horror movies, then The Conjuring will do it. This movie is the first in The Conjuring universe. It is based on the real-life events of a family who moved into a house and started to experience supernatural occurrences. 

I recall when The Conjuring came out, people were calling it the scariest horror film in years, and even now, ten years later, I still believe it. Regardless, King’s performance was outstanding in this movie. There’s something about kids in a horror movie that truly brings out the terror in their eyes, and King rocked it in this role.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012) 

The Dark Knight Rises is the thrilling conclusion of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, this time following the caped crusader as he looks to stop Bane, a terrorist of Gotham City who aims to destroy it with a nuclear blast. 

Honestly, you should watch the Batman films because they are so good, and I’ll be truthful and say King’s part here is small, but it’s impactful. She portrays young Talia al Ghul, and without giving away spoilers, she can convey an emotional performance without having to speak at all, and it carries so much depth for the older character. Be sure to check it out – plus, there are so many cool behind-the-scenes facts of The Dark Knight.

White House Down (2013)

Directed by Roland Emmerich, White House Down stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx and follows the story of how a Capitol policeman makes it his mission to rescue his daughter as well as the President of the United States when terrorists attack the White House. 

There are plenty of action films out there that are fun to watch, and I immensely enjoy White House Down. Personally, this was one of the first King movies where I loved seeing her in an action role, and her parts with Tatum (who played her father) were enjoyable to watch.

Fargo (2014 – 2015)

Fargo is an anthology black-comedy crime series – one of the best FX drama shows. Each season occurs in a new state and follows a new crime that not only turns people’s lives upside down but changes everything forever. 

King portrays Greta Grimly, the daughter of Gus, an officer in the series, and ugh, I wish I could go on for hours about how great she is, even in a recurring fashion, but I don’t want to spoil what happens in this show. I will say that the first season of Fargo is the best – and if you love Joey King, this is the show to watch besides The Act.

Bullet Train (2022)

Lastly, we must discuss Bullet Train, arguably King’s most significant role since The Kissing Booth franchise. This fast-paced, high-action movie follows the story of an operative who has to deliver a package somehow and survive a slew of killers on a bullet train in Asia.  

The Bullet Train cast itself is fantastic and full of incredible actors, but I ended up liking Joey King’s “The Prince.” While I don’t think she was the best assassin on the train at the end of the day, her scenes were funny and full of life, and I wanted to see more of her added to the story. I think action movies suit her well.

I know deep down you might be thinking, “Where are the movies from The Kissing Booth trilogy?” And to that, I say, no, those are not King’s best movies. Sure, they are pretty famous, but for all the wrong reasons, and while her acting is fine in them, I’ll give her the praise she deserves from these movies and shows because they’re better. 

That aside, there are plenty of great options here – and now, we can all check some of them while we wait for any update on her new movie, The Uglies – whenever that drops on the Netflix premiere schedule. 

You know, some of the best action movies of all time are those not afraid to have a little fun and insert some humor to ease the tension a little bit. Over the years, James Cameron movies like True Lies, buddy cop action movies like 48 Hours, and several of the greatest sci-fi films have proven to be funnier than you’d guess.

We’ve put together a list of more than 20 action movies that are funny in some way, either intentionally like some of the Jackie Chan flicks found below, or happy accidents like several of the Nicolas Cage movies from the mid ‘90s. 

Armageddon (1998)

The disaster movie genre got a fresh coat of paint and some much-needed laughs with the release of Michael Bay’s Armageddon. You would think that a movie about a last-ditch effort to blow up an asteroid before it obliterates Earth would be a tense and dramatic affair, not one with more laughs than destroyed buildings. But that’s exactly what we get thanks to iconic performances from the likes of Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Michael Clark Duncan, Steve Buscemi, and a young Owen Wilson.

Face/Off (1997) 

John Woo’s Face/Off probably isn’t the first movie you think of when it comes to funny action movies, which is what makes the unintentional comedy so great in this film about an FBI agent swapping places, and faces, with an unhinged terrorist. A lot of that absurd humor comes from Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of Castor Troy, who is just over-the-top in every way possible, creating some of the actor’s most unglued moments in the process. 

Rumble In The Bronx (1995)

Jackie Chan would become a staple of the buddy cop action comedy genre in the late ‘90s with Rush Hour, but one of his classic Hong Kong films that’s just as hilarious is Rumble in the Bronx. This is highlighted by the apartment fight scene where Chan’s Keung keeps getting thrown more painful weapons to take on a ponytailed henchman. The goon takes several punches and a football helmet like nothing, but cowers when Keung pulls out a massive wrench.

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)

Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service is a movie full of great style, gadgetry, and gratuitous violence, but it is also a film with a distinct sense of very, very dark humor. Whether it’s Samuel L. Jackson’s absolutely wild Richmond Valentine, the deadpan delivery of Mark Strong’s Merlin, or Taron Egerton dropping some hilarious lines as Eggsy, there are great funny moments. There’s also the “exploding heads” scene at that dirty sex joke poking fun at James Bond.

True Lies (1994)

Though not the best James Cameron movie, the Academy Award winner’s 1994 action comedy, True Lies, is one of the best representations of the director’s body of work. Sure, there are plenty of great action sequences that stand toe-to-toe with his previous work, but there’s also this great sense of humor. And no, not just the “You’re fired,” line from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Harry Tasker. The subplot involving Bill Paxton’s grifter, Harry trying to act like he’s a business software salesman, or anything with Tom Arnold is quite funny, looking back. 

48 Hrs. (1982) 

Often considered the first and one of the best buddy cop movies of all time, Walter Hill’s 48 Hrs. is also one of the funniest Eddie Murphy movies. While the humor had a bit of a harder edge than some of the comedian’s films that would follow, the pairing of Murphy and Nick Nolte is actually quite funny. The movie doesn’t skirt around the racism of the era, but instead turns it on its head and creates one hilarious interaction after another, especially the “Redneck Bar” scene. 

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015)

Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. appears to be another film adaptation of a classic spy TV series from yesteryear, but upon watching the 2015 movie, you quickly realize that this movie has a ton of comedy peppered throughout. Just look at the scene where Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) are bicking over a dress while Gaby (Alicia Vikander) tries on clothes. There’s a sigh and look of disdain on Napoleon’s face at one moment that's just too good.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (2005)

The film noir genre has been parodied time and time again over the years, with one of the best examples being Shane Black’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The movie, starring Robert Downey Jr. as a two-bit crook who accidentally wins a role in a mystery film, has this deadpan humor to it that seems more like a comedic tribute to Hollywood’s golden age. Sure, there’s a lot of crime and violence in the movie, but it also has a lot of humor throughout.

The Nice Guys (2016)

Shane Black's 2016 neo-noir buddy cop action film, The Nice Guys, is another movie that’s actually funnier than you’d think. This one centers around a private eye (Ryan Gosling) and a violent enforcer (Russell Crowe) as they reluctantly team up to find a missing teenager. This has a lot of the dark and self-deprecating humor that’s been a part of Black’s signature style for decades, and it feels right at home here.

Big Trouble In LIttle China (1986)

John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, one of the filmmaker’s best offerings, also happens to be one of his funniest. This 1986 fantasy action romp follows truck driver Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) as he gets in way over his head in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Up to this point in his career, Carpenter was more known for horror movies like Halloween and The Thing, but he proved with this one that he had the chops for comedy.

Bad Boys (1995)

Michael Bay took the buddy cop genre to new heights in 1995 with Bad Boys, a movie that also took WIll Smith and Martin Lawrence to new heights. In the movie, the two play Miami police detectives get wrapped up in a massive heroin conspiracy while also protecting a woman whose best friend was killed by a former cop. It has a lot of high stakes, but also a great sense of humor, especially when it comes to Smith and Lawrence’s character clashes.

Police Story (1985)

Years before Jackie Chan became an international superstar, he cut his teeth in Hong Kong cinema, which led to movies like 1985’s Police Story. Though more dramatic than movies that would follow later on, this thriller about a young cop accused of murder has flashes of what the actor would become a decade later. 

Bullet Train (2022)

When the first trailer for David Leitch’s Bullet Train came out, it looked like the 2022 thriller was going to be a straight-forward action flick with maybe a twist at the end. While that is true, the movie is also incredibly funny, especially whenever Brad Pitt’s hapless Ladybug keeps killing people by complete accident.

Romancing The Stone (1984)

One of the best romantic comedies of all time, Robert Zemeckis’ Romancing the Stone, is far funnier than you’d think. The movie centers on romance writer Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) as she travels to Colombia to find her kidnapped sister with the help of Jack T. Colton (Michael Douglas). Though the two leads have their fair share of comedic moments, a lot of the comedy comes from Ralph (Danny DeVito), a smuggler who gets into all kinds of trouble while looking for Joan in the jungle.

Kung Fu Hustle (2004)

If you didn’t know any better, you’d think Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle was a throwback to old martial arts films. Though the movie does pay homage to those that came before it, it also has multiple throwbacks to classic comedy series like Looney Tunes and other cartoons. It also has a great sense of humor and doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Edge Of Tomorrow (2014)

Doug Liman’s Edge of Tomorrow is one of those sci-fi action movies that also has a great sense of humor. This is especially true when Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) keeps dying and reliving the same day over and over again. The way the movie plays on this concept brings a lot of light and life to the dark movie about an alien invasion that could wipe out all life on the planet.

The Rundown (2003)

Peter Berg’s 2003 action comedy, The Rundown, follows Beck (Dwayne Johnson), a bounty hunter who goes deep into the jungle to find Travis Walker (Sean William Scott), the missing son of his employer. Though the wrestler-turned-actor’s acting chops weren’t quite at the levels that they are now, The Rock puts on a great comedic effort, which is made better thanks to Scott’s presence. 

Commando (1985)

Directed by Mark L. Lester, the 1985 Arnold Schwarzenegger action flick, Commando, is one hell of a ride. After his daughter is kidnapped by a deposed dictator, John Matrix (Schwarzenegger) goes on a one-man rescue mission that is straight-up bonkers, in all the best ways. Action, intensity, drama, senseless violence, and one of Schwarzenegger’s best lines – “I lied” – make this a fun watch.

The Last Boy Scout (1991)

Tony Scott’s 1991 action thriller, The Last Boy Scout, pairs Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans as two disgraced men who come together to solve a murder before uncovering a massive conspiracy involving professional sports betting. Known for its absolutely insane opening scene, the Shane Black-penned movie also has some hilarious scenes, which is no surprise considering its two stars.

Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)

Richard Donner’s Lethal Weapon 2 took what worked with the original and added a hilarious yet obnoxious character to the mix to create a funnier buddy cop action movie. In the film, Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) are charged with protecting federal witness Leo Getz (Joe Pesci). While it’s not shocking for one of the Lethal Weapon movies to be funny, the addition of Pesci took it up a notch.

The Last Dragon (1985)

The Last Dragon could very well be one of the most ridiculous martial arts movies you’ll ever see. This 1985 movie centers around Leroy Green (Taimak), a young martial artist who embarks on a journey to unlock the power of “The Glow” and follow in the footsteps of his hero, Bruce Lee. But a series of obstacles stands in his way, including the self-proclaimed “Shogun of Harlem,” Sho’nuff (Julius Carry). Seriously, just watch the trailer and see for yourself.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)

Raiders of the Lost Ark, a.k.a., the best Indiana Jones movie, is a fun, daring, and dashing action-adventure film that introduced us to one of Harrison Ford’s most iconic characters. On top of having some heart-pounding action, a whole lot of drama, and one classic movie moment after another, this Steven Spielberg film is also remarkably funny. Whether it’s the scene where Indy kicks a pesky Nazi and steals his hat, Karen Allen’s character hitting him with a mirror, or the classic “gun to a sword fight” shot, this movie slaps.

The Rock (1996)

We started with a Nic Cage movie, so why not end with one as well? Michael Bay’s 1996 action thriller, The Rock, follows an FBI weapons specialist (Cage) and former British Special Forces officer (Sean Connery) as they try to prevent a rogue group of Marines from unleashing a nerve gas agent in San Francisco. Though this is a more serious movie than Face/Off, there are still some funny moments, especially all those Connery zingers.

This has been quite a ride, one that has taken some twists and turns along the way and exposed us to some of the funniest action movies around. And, who knows, maybe some of the upcoming action flicks on the 2023 movie schedule will find their way on this list soon.

2022 was a good year for action movies overall, but we really were gifted with some great action scenes across all genres. From slashers to superheroes to even the standard run-and-gun thriller, everyone was looking to throw hands. Fists were flying in many different genres, and because of that, there was no shortage of great fight scenes this year to choose from in our end-of-year list. 

The following, in no particular order, are some of the best fight scenes we’ve seen in 2022. If you’re looking for the best action scenes frame-for-frame, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s dive into our picks and run through the action scenes of this year that are worth a re-watch. 

Avatar: The Way Of Water - Jake And Quaritch’s Big Battle

Avatar: The Way Of Water definitely isn’t a thrill ride from start to finish, but the final hour of the sequel is about as action-packed as any of these movies. Quaritch challenging Jake in a one-on-one fight after a long and chaotic battle between Na’vi and the Marines is epic, and the fight delivers. The unbridled rage of two men–er. Avatars wanting to rip each other to shreds culminates in the most thrilling battle of the entire movie. I’m ready to sit through the movie all over again just to get to that part at the end, which really isn’t that much of a punishment given how fun the movie is.

The Batman - Batman Storms The Iceberg Lounge

There are so many moments in The Batman worthy of this list, but if we’re talking about the absolute best, the title character storming The Iceberg Lounge takes the cake. Truthfully, it might be the most action-heavy scene in the character’s live-action history, as Batman bashes and beats his way through Penguin’s hideout looking for answers. We don’t see this often in Batman films because the Dark Knight is rarely willing to be so confrontational. Of course, The Batman is more of an early Batman tale just beyond the realm of being an origin story, so it tracks he’d be a bit more of a less-calculated renegade willing to just walk in a club and start bashing heads.

Everything Everywhere All At Once - Waymond Attacks With A Fanny Pack

2022 basically belongs to Michelle Yeoh, and I respect that. Given all the accolades she’s gotten so far though, I have to give some love to actor Ke Huy Quan and his performance as alternate universe Waymond. Everything Everywhere All At Once is loaded with action, but watching Waymond wield his fanny pack like nunchucks really gets this movie going. Who would’ve thought someone could do so much damage with an uncool but functional piece of fashion?

Anyone who has seen a Predator movie knows that members of this species are hard to kill. Unfortunately, the French trappers in Prey were born well before the franchise, so they had no idea what was coming when they tried to subdue one with a bear trap and a net. Jokes aside, those trappers just get brutalized by the Predator with its vast array of weapons as well as some of their own. There’s blood, guts and a lot of Frenchmen whose last dying thought was probably that the pelt wasn’t even close to worth the price they paid trying to get it.

Halloween Ends - Laurie And Michael’s Final Battle

Halloween Ends is the thrilling conclusion of the Halloween reboot trilogy, and the final confrontation between Michael Myers and his longtime target, Laurie Strode. Fans might’ve expected before watching that the final battle between the two would feature intense and hard-to-stomach violence, and they’re completely right. This is an action scene that isn’t for the faint of heart, and if you’re squeamish, you might just want to skip it entirely.

RRR - Animals Attack Partygoers

If you’re just generally aware of the existence of RRR, the film that had a stranglehold on many with a Netflix subscription in 2022, you’ve likely seen this scene. Bheem arrives at the scene of a high-profile party full of colonial elites and unleashes a slew of wild animals right into the center of the party. It’s the kind of absolute chaos only a Marvel movie would be capable of, and yet Bollywood surprised us in 2022 by showing other movies can go over the top in the best way possible. The epic slow-motion tiger dodges make this scene award-worthy, but the maulings are a nice touch.

The Northman - Final Battle 

I’m not sure there’s a one-on-one battle on this list that matches the raw emotion on display in the final battle of The Northman. Amaleth taking on Fjölnir amidst lava and smoke is a hauntingly beautiful scene and so emotional. I don’t think I’ve ever been more invested in watching two exhausted men struggle to land blows all whilst screaming at each other between slashes of the sword. It’s just something that needs to be seen, but those who read our Northman review knew that already.

The Gray Man - Six And Lloyd’s Final Showdown

Ryan Gosling’s Six and Chris Evans’ Lloyd throw down at the end of The Gray Man, and it’s the perfect endcap on an already incredible action movie. I’m not trying to say this scene alone is the reason why The Gray Man received a sequel, but I certainly would think it’s a contributing factor. Honestly, Gosling and Evans are just both so great in this movie that seeing them in this epic scene is really the cherry on top of two awesome performances.

Bullet Train - Ladybug vs. Tangerine

Bullet Train is a healthy mix of comedy and action, but just because there’s laughs to be had, that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be taken seriously. As an example, the fight between Ladybug and Tangerine features plenty of laughs, but also a lot of brutality that makes it look like either man is on the bring of killing each other. It’s just another reminder that Brad Pitt is still good at what he does and maybe that Aaron Taylor-Johnson deserves more roles than he already gets.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - Shuri vs. Namor

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever might be one of the most emotional Marvel movies of all time, but that doesn't diminish how awesome Letitia Wright’s Shuri is as the new Black Panther. She gets a chance to show she’s just as capable as any hero after besting Namor in combat, which viewers know was no easy feat. Sure, there’s a chance he still hasn’t completely shaken his goal of recruiting others to help destroy humanity, but that beating he took will almost certainly make him think twice about it.

2022 was an awesome year for entertainment in general, so be sure to check out other end-of-year lists as they appear on CinemaBlend in the coming days as well. Hopefully, 2023 will have just as many memorable moments, especially when it comes to action. 

Action movies hit as hard with audiences as they ever had in 2022, but in a way that people might not have expected. That is to say, it was a year where some of the year’s best action came from some unexpected actors and actresses, as well as some projects that really pushed the genre a bit more than the usual run-and-gun type thriller. 

Rest assured, there are still those types of standard action movies that made this list, but there’s no denying this year looked a little different and contained a lot less of the usual suspects. With that in mind, let’s dive into the top action movies of 2022. 

10. The Contractor

I’d say if there were an award for the most standard action-thriller in 2022, The Contractor would run away with it. That’s not a knock on the Chris Pine movie, as there’s nothing wrong with sticking with a formula that’s familiar. You add Kiefer Sutherland to this spec ops thriller vehicle, and that’s a solid action thriller for a Friday night viewing! It’s certainly worth the price of admission of a Paramount+ subscription, just in case anyone interested isn’t actively subscribed.

9. Bullet Train

Bullet Train looked like a must-watch action film from the very first trailer, and I’m happy to report that is the case. This is a movie experience that will stick with you long after the viewing, and while it may be reminiscent of other action movies, it’s drenched with a style that gives it a bit more of a pop that viewers will enjoy. Plus, who can say no to Bullet Train's stellar cast of talented actors?

8. Uncharted

Tom Holland had so much success as Peter Parker, Sony seemed to think he’d do just as well as Uncharted’s Nathan Drake. While fans of the gaming franchise might grumble and gripe about the casting, he brings that classic Holland charm that makes the Spider-Man movies so enjoyable. Critics weren’t entirely on board with the movie, but it seemed to find success all the same. CinemaBlend Dirk Libbey credited it as one of the best video game movie adaptations, which could’ve definitely played a factor if that’s the case.

7. RRR

It’s not often that Indian films get a lot of attention from the United States, especially those in the action genre. And yet, the internet was all about RRR and some of the batshit crazy action sequences of this story of Indian revolutionaries Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. This movie is over the top if you compare it to the standard action movie, but honestly, pretty on par with the average Marvel film too. It’s certainly worth a watch, especially if you’re down for some of the most intense animal fight scenes of the year.

6. Ambulance

It was never a question that Michael Bay’s Ambulance would be on the list, as few in the business know how to film an explosive thriller as well as the Hollywood director. CinemaBlend’s Eric Eisenberg gave Ambulance a favorable review and noted that he appreciated the self-aware tone that allowed Bay to go “bonkers” and had all sorts of compliments for Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance. Bay’s work is so prolific action fans are going to know what they’re getting into here, but just because it’s familiar doesn’t mean it’s unworthy of a spot on this list.

5. The Gray Man

Ryan Gosling showed he’s capable of shouldering action movies in Drive and Only God Forgives, but those are nothing quite like The Gray Man. The Netflix thriller definitely leaned on the popularity of Bourne movies for its story, and while critics were “blah” about it, audiences are all about it. This is a fun action film, and Chris Evans’ sociopath villain steals the show. It’s not a movie that’ll win big at the Academy, but I, and I assume many others, will be watching the sequel for more non-stop action and thrills.

4. Prey

Let’s just be honest, the Predator franchise hasn’t been the most consistent franchise in terms of quality. As such, I can imagine quite a few were surprised when its latest film premiered on Hulu as one of the most critically-acclaimed Predator movies since the original. CinemaBlend’s Dirk Libbey said this was thanks in large part to the movie leaning on the elements that made the original so great. It’s certainly a breath of fresh air for a Predator franchise that definitely needed a win.

3. The Woman King

Viola Davis: potential future EGOT as well as action star? The actress proved once again she’s capable of doing it all and more in The Woman King. Davis crushed it as General Nanisca, the leader and trainer of the Agojie. CinemaBlend’s Corey Chichizola loved the action of the movie, and credited Davis with her portrayal of a tough-as-nails character and showing off the vulnerability behind that character.

2. The Northman 

Director Robert Eggers has consistently delivered some iconic movies to audiences in recent years, though one wouldn’t say previous offerings like The Witch or The Lighthouse belonged in the action category. That wasn’t the case in The Northman, which CinemaBlend’s Eric Eisenberg gave a well-deserved 4.5 out of 5 stars to. In what’s described as a mix of brutal and breathtaking, The Northman delivers an action film that’s both entertaining and a stunning display of the ancient world. I could’ve guessed that a Viking revenge film would’ve been a blast to watch, but this is some serious high praise.

1. Everything, Everywhere, All At Once

Everything, Everywhere, All At Once had a lot of guts to try and make a movie about a multiverse in the golden era of superhero movies. It also had a lot of guts to center its action-heavy story around 60-year-old Michelle Yeoh. All that to say, this movie knew exactly what it was doing, and it couldn’t have picked a better lead to kick, punch, scream and hot dog-finger her way through a wild adventure that will live on as a movie people talk about decades from now. It’s worth the chatter and, hopefully, will net Yeoh some Oscar recognition during awards season.

Netflix’s Top 10 Movies list is a key way to see what users are watching and what’s popular during a given time. As awards season heats up, summer blockbusters are landing on streaming platforms, and more new films are becoming available for audiences to check out at home. The hit summer Brad Pitt film Bullet Train was one of these films. It quickly gained popularity and rose to number one on the Netflix list. However, in an unexpected twist, an underrated Hugh Jackman/Jake Gyllenhaal film just overtook it, and the film came out almost 10 years ago. 

This week, Bullet Train dropped down to number 2, as Prisoners rose to number one on the popularity list (via Netflix). The film was just added to the platform and was released in 2013. At the time, the film was critically acclaimed and a financial success. Along with Gyllenhaal and Jackman, the film also stars Paul Dano, Viola Davis, and Terrence Howard. In addition, there are many heavy hitters behind the scenes. Prisoners is directed by Dune helmer Denis Villeneuve and acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins is the DP on the project. 

Prisoners is about the kidnapping of two young girls on Thanksgiving in a small town. Gyllenhaal plays the detective on the case trying to find the girls, and the father of one of the girls taken is played by Jackman. The father takes matters into his own hands and imprisons one of the suspects he believes took his daughter. It’s a gritty thriller with several twists and turns that are sure to have you at the edge of your seat.

While it may seem like Prisoners would be an obvious hit for Netflix users, given its cast and other A-list talent behind the screen, there are several reasons this is so surprising. Prisoners came out almost a decade ago and has been available to audiences several ways throughout the years, while Bullet Train was only available to see in theaters until very recently. It is surprising that such an old film is receiving such attention. However, this could be a way for new audiences to discover such a great film, especially if they were very young when Prisoners first hit the scene. 

Another reason Prisoners' Netflix success is shocking is due to its content. Bullet Train is an instant crowd pleaser, with an explosive premise and exciting visuals. The film is a very fun ride and has a mass appeal that is sure to attract many different audiences watching movies with their families during the holiday season. Prisoners is a very different film. It is extremely dark, very hard to watch at times, and has a famously ambiguous ending. While it is incredibly accomplished, Prisoners is a bit of a bummer, so may not be for everyone, especially around the holidays. On the other hand, dark, killer-driven material has been on the rise at Netflix, so this could just be par for the course.

First off, there is Eric Eisenberg’s Bullet Train review, where he said “Brad Pitt has a blast in the silly and badass action comedy.” Throughout the review, Eisenberg had great things to say about the story, characters, and Pitt’s joyful performance. Other critics made note of the movie’s impressive fight scenes, plot twists, and chaotic premise when breaking down the movie.

Bullet Train will be streaming on Netflix starting on Saturday, December 3rd, making it just one of many new movies coming to the service the final month of the year.

There are a lot of genres that are struggling at the box office in 2022, but horror most definitely isn't one of them. Between Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's Scream, Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone, and Jordan Peele's Nope, scary movies have been some of the year's biggest surprises, and that trend is continuing with Parker Finn's Smile. The film dominated its competition last weekend, and the numbers its done since this past Friday are even more impressive while going up against a pair of new releases in David O. Russell's Amsterdam and Will Speck and Josh Gordon's Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.

Smile Drops Only 22 Percent Weekend-To-Weekend To Claim Its Second Box Office Victory 

It's typical for a new release to see its box office revenue dip between 40 and 60 percent in its second weekend compared to its first three days in theaters, but Smile can now be designated as a statistical outlier. The film was deemed a winner last  Sunday when it made $22.6 million in its debut, but now it is a certified hit. The estimated $17.6 million the original horror feature has brought in registers as just a 22 percent drop weekend-to-weekend, which is, needless to say, awesome. 

Awesome as the results are, one could also call them predictable. That original $22.6 million made by Smile indicates a whole lot of buzz, and that buzz is backed by a solid 78 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Throw in the fact that we are now in the heart of spooky season, and you have a formula for a big second weekend score. The positive performance by Zach Cregger's Barbarian last month (not to mention its continued earnings in October) gave us a preview of movie-goers' hunger for good, original horror in the run-up to Halloween, and Parker Finn's movie has fully capitalized.

On top of the money that Smile has made domestically, The Numbers says that it has also already made $40 million abroad. That brings its worldwide total to $89.9 million and guarantees that it will be considered one of the year's greatest box office stories by the time that 2022 comes to a close. This is a movie that, per Variety, only cost $17 million to make, and its already quintupled that number. Even when you subtract marketing and publicity costs, this is a huge win.

Clearly Smile is playing with a hot hand, but what will be fascinating to observe is its performance in its third weekend. Clearly Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile and Amsterdam didn't steal away its core demographics (more on those two films in a minute), but there is a big movie coming up this Friday that absolutely will: David Gordon Green's Halloween Ends. The hyped conclusion to the modern Halloween trilogy is looking to capture the attention of the exact same audience as Smile, and that may result in a big fall in the numbers released next Sunday.

Halloween Ends is going to be dealing with a box office handicap, as it was announced this past summer that the film is going to be a hybrid release that goes to theaters and Peacock simultaneously. Will that have any kind of impact on audiences who would potentially buy tickets for a big screen double feature with Michael Myers and Smile? We'll find out in a few days.

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile Puts Up Rather Mediocre Numbers In Its Opening Weekend

Unfortunately, another pattern that has continued at the 2022 box office this weekend is seeing one particular movie dominate while everything else does modest business or worse. In the case of Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, one could argue for it being more on the "modest" side of the scale, but that's partially influenced by the fact that it at least managed to make eight figures in its opening weekend.

The $11.5 million it made is good enough to rank Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile as the thirty-third biggest opening weekend of the year – sandwiched between Baltasar Kormákur's Beast and Barbarian – and while that doesn't look great, the bigger issue is the fact that the movie cost more than both of those films' budgets combined. According to the New York Times, the family movie based on the book of the same name had a budget in the neighborhood of $50 million, which means it still has quite a while to go before it will be deemed profitable. 

Despite Its Star-Studded Cast, Amsterdam Does Little At The Box Office And Settles For Third Place

The filmmakers behind Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile are probably disappointed by the box office results, but one thing that the film can hang its hat on is the fact that it didn't do nearly as badly as Amsterdam, the only other new wide release that came out this weekend. The mystery-driven feature sports an ensemble cast that is full of popular names – including Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Rami Malek, Anya Taylor Joy, and more – but it failed to wow critics and now it's apparently failing to wow audiences.

The bad kicker here is how much it cost 20th Century Studios to make Amsterdam. Bringing so many talented stars together isn't inexpensive, and Deadline says that David O. Russell was given $80 million to work with. When a film manages to only make about eight percent of its budget back in its opening weekend, it seems pretty fair to apply the word "flop."

Hopefully next weekend's box office numbers are a bit rosier as a result of the final battle between Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode and the boogeyman Michael Myers. Halloween Ends arrives in theaters on Friday, and we'll have the news on its box office performance here on CinemaBlend Sunday morning.

Halloween is now less than a month away, and it's pretty damn clear that movie-goers are excited. In the past few weeks, films of the creepy and scary variety have been topping the box office, including Olivia Wilde's Don't Worry Darling and Zach Cregger's Barbarian, and it feels like at least some of that is an extension of "'tis the season." Naturally, the reason I bring this up is because this weekend saw yet another horror title dominate on the big screen, as Parker Finn's Smile has become an instant hit. 

Unfortunately, what's good news for Smile is bad news for Nicholas Stoller's Bros... but I'll get into that after you scope out the full Top 10 below:

2022 Has Another Win For Original Horror Movies With Smile

Between the aforementioned Don't Worry Darling, Jordan Peele's Nope, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's Scream, and Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone, there are a lot of horror titles ranked in the Top 25 domestic opening weekends in 2022, and Smile is the latest to join the club. The film got buzz jump started with its premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas a couple week before its release, and it sports a solid 75 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. The positive word of mouth has resulted in the movie earning $22 million in its first three days in theaters, per The Numbers.

It's hard to look at it as anything but a big genre win. While the feature does have some recognizable names in its cast– including Jessie T. Usher, Kal Penn, Kyle Gallner Judy Reyes and Rob Morgan – it doesn't have a big anchoring it, and it isn't based on any recognizable IP (it's technically an adaptation of Parker Finn's short film Laura Hasn't Slept). This movie's success is arguably the result of positive word of mouth, smart marketing, and a perfect release date, which makes it an anomaly in the modern entertainment industry – and an exciting one.

Like with most horror movies these days, Smile business at the box office is very much boosted by the fact that it was not a film that was expensive to make. Variety reports that the budget was only $17 million. There are still publicity and marketing expenses that need to be accounted for, but obviously the release is well on its way to being considered a huge success.

Smile is additionally in a position to demonstrate some legs. There is definitely some significant competition on the big screen coming in the next few weeks, including David Gordon Green's Halloween Ends and Jaume Collet-Serra's Black Adam, but spooky season is going to be keeping interest up for good horror movies, and Parker Finn's film is going to be around to feed the appetite.

Barbarian is a good model to at which to look. The film was released almost a month ago, and while its opening weekend saw it do less than half the business that Smile did in its first three days, it has stuck around in the Top 10 and continued to make money. It was only made with a reported $4 million budget (per Variety), and to date it has made $34.8 in its theatrical run (which includes the $1.7 million it has made from outside the United States and Canada).

While Smile doesn't match Barbarian when it comes to critical response (the latter movie sports a 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), it has received a better grade from CinemaScore ("B-" vs, "C+"), it has been released closer to Halloween, and it is off to a faster start in ticket sales. It could very likely end up being called one of the biggest success stories of the season.

Bros Continues A Sad Trend For Big Screen, R-Rated Comedies

There's a lot to be happy about when it comes to the success of Smile, but Bros is a very different sadly. It's another title that has earned tremendously positive word of mouth following a festival premiere in September, but the end results are very different. The LGBTQ+ comedy had to settle for fourth place in its opening weekend, making only $4.8 million and ranking behind both Don't Worry Darling (in its second weekend) and Gina Prince-Bythewood's The Woman King (in its third weekend).

It's a bummer to see a great movie fail, and this very much is that, but it's also hard not to see this as troubling extension of a larger trend concerning theatrically-released R-rated comedies: they seem to be going extinct. Since the start of the pandemic, we've seen the release of a few titles in that specific category – including Jason Woliner's Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Max Barbakow's Palm Springs, Michael Showalter's The Lovebirds, and Judd Apatow's The King Of Staten Island... but all of those films were given streaming or digital releases. 

Excluding the more action-centric features – including David Leitch's Bullet Train, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah's Bad Boys For Life, Patrick Hughes' The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard – there are only two R-rated comedies listed among the Top 100 domestic releases since the start of 2020, and they are Jeff Tremaine's Jackass Forever and Miguel Arteta's Like A Boss. Following the disheartening release of Bros, it's hard not to feel like being in a crowded movie theater with hundreds of people in simultaneous uproarious laughter at a bawdy romance or adventure is becoming a thing of the past, and that thought is horrible depressing.

Bullet Train Finally Crosses $100 Million At The Domestic Box Office

To end this week's box office report on a more positive note, one of the late summer's biggest fits finally hit a major milestone, as Bullet Train (released in early August) has finally crossed $100 million at the box office. I first started teasing this development back in early September when the film made it to $92.5 million, but it has only finally hit nine figures now that it has slipped to eighth place in the weekend Top 10 and is playing in fewer than 2,000 locations.

Bullet Train is one of only 13 movies to hit $100 million in 2022, and combined with what it has made abroad the film has earned $236.1 million to date. That makes it the twelfth highest grossing film of the year, ahead of Angus MacLane's Lightyear ($218.9 million).

Coming up this weekend, there are three new releases set to potentially shake up the Top 10, including David O. Russell's star-studded period thriller Amsterdam, Josh Gordon and Will Speck's family-centric Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, and Todd Field's Cate Blanchett-led composer drama Tár. A few days ago we witnessed a rare occasion, Brad Pitt actually complimented his long-time pal George Clooney. Normally the two are always poking fun or throwing light-hearted shade at each other, so while there was a compliment Pitt also threw in just a hint of shade. Now, Clooney has responded in an A+ way to Pitt’s kind words, while he agreed with Pitt's compliment, he also noted that he does not 100% buy it. 

The two have a storied bromance. Ever since Ocean’s Eleven, the dynamic duo has been known for their shenanigans and pranks. Both actors are in the midst of promoting movies on the 2022 movie schedule, and their friendship has been coming up in interviews. Pitt was asked who the most handsome actor alive was, and while it came with an f-bomb, he did say it was George Clooney. Recently, Clooney was chatting with CBS Mornings, and when asked about Pitt’s comments he responded with: 

I wouldn’t expect anything else from Clooney. The snark is always real, especially with long-time costars. As he’s been on his press tour with Julia Roberts for their new movie Ticket to Paradise, the biting and simultaneously goofy comments have been flying left and right. Roberts, who also starred in Ocean’s with Pitt and Clooney, mentioned that she did the movie because it gave her a chance to be “really snarky to George.” 

The snark is for sure real on all sides, and I love it. All of this reminds me of the tomfoolery from the Ocean’s movies. For example, Clooney once pranked Brad Pitt and Don Cheadle by leaving them in a haunted house while filming Ocean’s Twelve. 

While the iconic heist movies, which are considered not only some of Clooney’s best movies but also some of Pitt’s best films, came out almost two decades ago, I’m so happy Pitt and Clooney are back on the screen in super fun movies. It seems like they’ve both been having a blast with their new projects this year. 

Pitt starred in the fun action comedy Bullet Train and popped up in the comedy The Lost City earlier this year. Meanwhile, Clooney has Ticket to Paradise coming out later this year. All these movies take me back to the Ocean’s days, but I just wish the two actors would work together again.

Oh, wait…they are! The two will be back together again in a new movie from Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts. Not much is known about the movie other than it will follow two “lone wolf fixers.” This all sounds kind of similar to the dynamic between Danny Ocean and Rusty Ryan, making it perfect for Clooney and Pitt.

While this movie is a ways away, luckily both actors have projects coming out this year to get excited about. Hopefully, these upcoming movies and interviews will mean more playful jabs at each other. On top of these silly responses, you can catch Clooney with his heist wife Roberts in Ticket to Paradise in theaters on October 21. As for Pitt, you can go back and watch The Lost City and Bullet Train, he will also appear in the Old Hollywood epic Babylon on December 25. So, I feel pretty confident more Clooney/Pitt shinanigans are on their way. 

They say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, and Olivia Wilde’s sophomore effort -- Don’t Worry Darling -- might be proof of that. As behind-the-scenes drama and rumors of feuds overshadowed the movie itself, the psychological thriller still handily won the weekend domestic box office, pulling in $19.2 million. About 40 members of the Don’t Worry Darling crew released a statement to dispute Florence Pugh and Wilde’s rumored “screaming match,” and there was also that whole “Did Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine?” situation. But whether it was the drama on screen or off screen that piqued moviegoers’ attention, there were butts in the seats this weekend.

Audiences also saw Avatar return to theaters, and some second- and third-week films were hanging in there. So take a look at the full Top 10 chart, and then we’ll break it all down. 

While director and star Olivia Wilde didn’t seem pleased that feud rumors were dominating her movie's headlines when she broke her silence on the spitting incident, it could be argued that they actually helped the movie overcome critics’ tepid reactions. CinemaBlend’s Eric Eisenberg called Don’t Worry Darling “a mystery missing momentum,” and the movie maintains a less-than-ideal B- on CinemaScore. Critics rated it at just 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the overall audience score was much more forgiving, with more than 500 reviews averaging for a score of 80% fresh. 

Also of note are the movie’s international numbers, as it earned another $10.8 million for a global total of $30 million in its debut, per The Numbers. Considering the film’s reported $35 million budget, that certainly goes in the “win” column. Now, we’ll have to see if it’s got legs in the theaters.  

Avatar Makes A Big Return To The Big Screen

Ahead of the long-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water, which is set for a December 16 release marked with high box office expectations for the Disney movie, the mega company has removed the 2009 original from its streaming service. Viewers will instead have to visit the theater if they want a refresher on the events of the first movie, as Avatar was re-released this weekend. Apparently, a good number of people were game, with the movie pulling in $10 million over the Friday-through-Sunday period to bring its overall domestic earnings to $770.5 million. 

Domestically, Avatar is the fourth-highest grossing movie of all time (behind Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Force Awakens). It also firmly stands atop the worldwide box office winners, now with $2.86 billion. 

The Woman King Drops Just 42% In Second Week 

Falling from its No. 1 spot this week — but still beating out the returning Avatar — is The Woman King starring Viola Davis. The historical epic rode its Toronto International Film Festival buzz to an opening weekend win at the box office and claimed silver in its second week with an additional $11.1 million. That’s just a 42% drop, as it now holds a domestic gross of $36.3 million.

In its third week, the horror movie Barbarian dug its nails in for another $4.8 million, as second-week films Pearl and See How They Run each added just under $2 million. Their earnings fell just 39% and 37%, respectively, but each movie was shown in more theaters than during their premiere weeks. With the former's budget of just $1 million, this is still a win for A24. 

Nearing the end of their runs in the Top 10 might be Top Gun: Maverick and Minions: The Rise of Gru, with the sequels claiming the bottom two spots this week after impressive 18- and 13-week runs, respectively. But, as my daughter pointed out, Minions don't die, and I wouldn't bet against Tom Cruise either. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Bullet Train Nears Big Domestic Milestone 

After its eighth weekend in theaters, the Brad Pitt ensemble Bullet Train remains securely in the middle of the top 10, and it’s possibly just a week away from crossing the $100 million mark in domestic gross. With $99.3 million total, including the $1.8 million it picked up this weekend, the action-comedy better work fast, as it continues to be shown in fewer theaters around the country. This week it played on nearly 700 fewer screens than the week before. 

We've definitely got some things to keep an eye on in ticket sales over the next week. Will Don't Worry Darling lose the momentum it gained from pre-release press, or will word-of-mouth advertising push more people to witness the cast's chemistry for themselves? The highly anticipated and heavily promoted Bros is set to hit theaters on September 30 (and early reactions are seeing critics praising the queer rom-com), alongside the ridiculously creepy-looking Smile. With such low numbers in the Top 10, I'd definitely expect those to disrupt some of these rankings.

After a couple of light weeks to start September, Hollywood delivered a trio of new wide releases this weekend... though it turns out that only one of them managed to stir up a lot of interest from movie-goers. While Tom George's See How They Run and Ti West's Pearl only managed to bring in a few million dollars respectively, Gina Prince-Bythewood's The Woman King inspired a lot of people to purchase tickets, and it has become the biggest title currently playing on the big screen.

The Woman King Easily Wins The Weekend Box Office With An Estimated $19 Million

Thanks to its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, The Woman King had a full week of big buzz building before its arrival in theaters this weekend, and it would appear that the positive word of mouth did it a lot of favors. The movie played in over 3,700 locations domestically in the last three days, and estimates are saying that it has made $19 million thus far. 

It's not exactly a record-breaking haul (The Woman King is now ranked as the 22nd biggest opening weekend of 2022 thus far), but larger context showcases it as a solid win. The movie isn't based on any pre-existing media, and has essentially been sold to audiences on its premise, buzz, and the star power of Viola Davis. It's not often that we see projects like that from modern Hollywood make nearly $20 million in their first three days of release, and yet it looks like the new release made more in its debut than movies like Olivia Newman's Where The Crawdads Sing ($17.3 million), Julian Fellowes' Downton Abbey: A New Era ($16 million), and Kenneth Branagh's Death On The Nile ($12.9 million).

Admittedly The Woman King does still have to make a lot of money before its considered a true financial success. Variety says that the film was made with a reported budget of $50 million, so the historical drama is going to need to stick around in the Top 10 for a few weeks before it starts generating real profit. That being said, with its 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and an "A+" grade from CinemaScore, one doesn't have to struggle to imagine enthusiastic movie-goers recommending the cinematic adventure to friends and loved ones, inspiring them to check it out in the weeks to come.

As far as competition is concerned, The Woman King ironically will be going up against another original, high-profile festival release next week with the arrival of Olivia Wilde's Don't Worry Darling in theaters on Friday. One thing that notably sets them apart is that while The Woman King has earned a lot of acclaim, the reception of new film starring Florence Pugh, Harry Styles and Chris Pine has been much more critical – so it will be interesting to see what happens when the two titles square off at the box office.

Pearl And See How They Run Are In A Battle For Third Place

Exciting as it is to see The Woman King do so well at the box office, it also needs to be said that looking at the rest of the Top 10 is pretty distressing  – and that includes looking at the other aforementioned wide releases that hit cinemas this past Friday. Based on figures reported by The Numbers, Pearl and See How They Run are in a battle for third place, and it's a close race because neither the horror movie nor the mystery managed to putt a lot of butts in seats in the last three days.

In regards to the former, it's hard to imagine that A24 is over the moon about the results. Starring Mia Goth, Pearl is a prequel to Ti West's X, which first hit theaters back in March, and while the new release did better as far as ranking compared to its predecessor, its ticket sales are comparatively down. X made $4.3 million when it opened in fourth place, and it looks like the follow-up has only made $3.1 million in its first weekend. Regardless, West is going to be getting an opportunity to make a third film in the series, as MaXXXine being announced last week.

As for See How They Run, there was probably hopes among the filmmakers and within the studio that the movie would be a new whodunit hit a la Kenneth Branagh's Murder On The Orient Express or Rian Johnson's Knives Out, but fate didn't have such a positive outcome for it. Like with Pearl, early estimates say that it has only made $3.1 million this weekend, and we'll have to wait and see the final numbers before determining its true ranking.

Barbarian Has A Stellar Week-To-Week Drop As It Moves To Second Place

As for the holdovers from previous weeks, the most exciting storyline from this weekend's box office results is the performance by Zach Cregger's Barbarian. In last Sunday's column, I highlighted the stark contrast between critical and audience reception of the film and pondered how it might impact its legs at the box office... and it turns out the early results are phenomenal. From weekend-to-weekend, the movie's earnings only dropped 40 percent, bringing its domestic total to $20.9 million thus far. That means it has already basically doubled its reported budget at the box office – and one can assume the money will keep rolling in as we get closer to Halloween and audiences only get more in the mood for spooky cinema.

Looking ahead, audiences will not only be able to catch Don't Worry Darling in theaters on Friday, but James Cameron's Avatar will also be getting a special re-release – giving the highest-grossing blockbuster of all time an opportunity to make even more money before the arrival of the sequel, Avatar: The Way Of Water, in December. We have reached the most beloved time of year for horror fans. Halloween is weeks away, and as the days grow shorter and the wind gets chillier, genre fans are very much put in the mood to get some scares from their entertainment. Thankfully there are a lot of thrilling and spooky movies set to come out very soon, and leading the parade is Zach Cregger's Barbarian – which has debuted at number one in its opening weekend.

Barbarian Makes Eight Figures On Its Way To The Top Spot

Coming into the weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Barbarian was only expected to make $5-6 million during its debut, and while a number in that range would still have resulted in the film topping the box office, what we're seeing here is obviously a very nice surprise. There has been a scary lull in the industry within recent weeks, with an extremely slow August throwing cold water on what had previously been an incredibly hot blockbuster season, but a significant number of movie-goers made a point of going to see the horror feature that arrived in theaters this past Friday.

The estimated $10 million earned (via The Numbers) is obviously not a record-setter, as the present figure makes Barbarian's opening weekend the 30th biggest of 2022 thus far. But the movie didn't really need to get Marvel Cinematic Universe-esque results to be called a win. It doesn't appear that the budget of the movie has been reported yet, but its clearly not a film that cost hundreds of millions – and knowing that, it very well may be coming close to breaking even already. Along with it outpacing the aforementioned conservative estimates, it's a positive and surprising win for the box office world.

We can also hope that it further establishes precedent that ends up giving us more horror movies starring Bill Skarsgård released in the month of September, with Barbarian's success coming in the wake of Andy Muschietti's IT and IT Chapter Two.

So what kind of legs will Barbarian end up showing? That's a complicated question because there are a number of competing factors in play that can influence how things proceed in the coming weeks. One reason to feel optimistic is the fact that we are drawing ever closer to Halloween 2022, which should only further feed the audiences' appetite for horror releases. Another win working in the film's favor is the critical response – which one imagines had an influence on its opening weekend numbers. Professional reviewers have shown a lot of love to Zach Cregger's creation, and on Rotten Tomatoes it is boasting an impressive 92 percent score.

While those factors make the outlook appear solid for Barbarian, there are some issues at play as well. One is genre competition, with upcoming horror movies distracting fans looking for different scares. Another is the word of mouth, which hasn't been as golden as the buzz from critics. The audience score is almost 20 points lower on Rotten Tomatoes, and CinemaScore grades from opening weekend audiences delivered a mediocre "C+" result.

At the very least we can probably expect Barbarian to stick around in the Top 10 for a few weeks – but that probably says less about Barbarian and more about the depressed market that is the box office at the moment.

In Limited Release, Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva Takes Second Place With A Strong Per Theater Average 

Along with the big opening weekends of some anime feature releases, one of the more exciting recent box office developments has been the success of imports from India. Back in March, S. S. Rajamouli's RRR was released in 1,200 theaters nationwide, and it opened in third place behind Aaron and Adam Nee's The Lost City (which was also debuting in theaters) and Matt Reeves' The Batman (which was in its fourth weekend). 

Ayan Mukherjee's Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva, distributed by Fox Star India, didn't get quite as big a release, as it's only playing in 810 locations around the country, but it definitely did find an audience – putting up a larger per theater average ($5,161) than any other title playing on the big screen right now.

By the end of its run, RRR ended up making $13.8 million domestically, but it doesn't appear that Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva will be reaching those heights – based on the fact that it still only made about half of what RRR did in its opening weekend. The silver lining is that it has already made $19.5 million outside the United States, bringing its current worldwide total to $23.9 million

Bullet Train Is Inching Closer To $100 Million At The Domestic Box Office

As noted earlier, August 2022 was a rough month at the box office, but one of the very few bright spots was David Leitch's Bullet Train. The action movie debuted in the first weekend of the final summer month and made $30 million. It fell out of the top spot following its second week, with Tetsuro Kodama's Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Jessica M. Thompson's The Invitation, and Joseph Kosinki's Top Gun: Maverick each taking over for one weekend each – but now the Brad Pitt feature is getting very close to a milestone: $100 million at the domestic box office.

Bullet Train has already more than doubled its reported budget at the worldwide box office, having made $211.8 million thus far, but being one of only 12 other 2022 movies to reach nine figures in the United States and Canada alone would be a nice feather in its cap. The $3.3 million it made over the last three days has inched the film closer to the target – the domestic total presently at $92.5 million – so it should be able to cross the finish line before the end of September (provided Sony keeps it in enough theaters).

Next weekend should produce some interesting box office results, as there are a nmber of films hitting wide release – including Kevin Smith's comedy sequel Clerks III, Ti West's horror feature Pearl, Tom George's whodunit See How They Run, and Gina Prince-Bythewood's epic The Woman King. Back in January of this year, there was a lot of excitement about the success of Jon Watts' Spider-Man: No Way Home, but that excitement was tainted by everything else that was going on at the box office. As the Marvel blockbuster repeatedly claimed the title of "#1 Movie In America," it was hard not to also notice that the victories were attained against almost zero competition.

After Earning Over $1 Billion In The Winter, Spider-Man: No Way Home Adds $6 Million To Its Domestic Total

If one rewinds the clocks back to 2019 and takes a look at the box office for the first weekend in September, one rediscovers that the winner of the Friday-to-Sunday battle on the big screen was won by Andy Muschietti's IT Chapter Two – which had one of the most successful openings of any horror movie ever. Hype was at high levels thanks to the popularity of the film's predecessor, and the Stephen King adaptation made $91.1 million in three days.

In 2022, the number one movie at the box office in that same weekend made approximately 6.5 percent of that total. A truly brutal ouch.

Spider-Man: No Way Home – The More Fun Stuff Version is about 13 minutes longer than the version of the film that was in theaters last December and made available home video in the early months of the year, and Sony Pictures made the call to give the extended cut a wide release in nearly 4,000 locations this past Friday. It clearly didn't turn out to be the fresh win that the studio wanted it to be, as it made an estimated $6 million.

For those who want to be saved the trouble of doing the math, that's an average of $1,525 per location – which looks particularly rough when you remember that Spider-Man: No Way Home made $59,995 per location when it first hit theaters back in December. It's Sony's second underwhelming Marvel movie re-release of the year, as you may remember that the studio made the call to put Daniel Espinosa's Morbius back on the big screen in June (hoping to make money off of people laughing at its awfulness). That dismal decision resulted in just a $289 per location average.

It's not exactly hard to decipher what went wrong here. After Spider-Man: No Way Home hit theaters back in December 2021, it ended up staying in the Top 5 at the box office for 13 weeks – and that only happens if there is a strong contingent of fans who are paying to see it multiple times. Since then, the blockbuster has been released digitally and on 4K/Blu-ray/DVD, and die-hard fans have purchased copies en masse and surely enjoyed it at least one more time in the comfort of their own homes.

Spider-Man: No Way Home – The More Fun Stuff Version is technically arriving just a couple months after the original version fully left theaters (which happened at the end of June, per The Numbers) and after the home video release. With the movie still fresh in audiences' memory, and the knowledge that this new cut will surely be available to watch at home in a few weeks/months, is it any surprise that we didn't see massive crowds going to see it this weekend?

Sony has said that the impetus behind the theatrical release of the expanded film was in celebration of Spider-Man's 60th anniversary, as the web-slinger first arrived in the pages of Marvel Comics in August 1962. Sadly, these box office results aren't much of a birthday present.

Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul., The Only New Wide Release This Weekend, Failed To Crack The Top 10

Part of the reason why Spider-Man: No Way Home – The Fun Stuff Version was able to win the box office this weekend with a $6 million haul is because the film industry didn't put up much competition against it. It seems that Hollywood figured that everyone would be too busy with the end of summer and the start of the school year to go to the movies. Hence, Adamma Ebo's Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. was the only new feature title in wide release this weekend, and you'll notice that it's missing from the chart above.

Distributed by Focus Features, Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. only made $1.4 million in the past three days... and it's hard not to put at least a touch of the blame on the fact that the film wasn't released as a theatrical exclusive. Instead, the choice was made to give the film a hybrid release, as it started streaming on Peacock this past Friday in addition to playing on the big screen. We can't say how well the movie did on the service, as Universal doesn't release subscription or traffic numbers, but it feels fair to assume that the more convenient option lured away at least some movie-goers who otherwise might have purchased a ticket to see it at their local cinema.

Will the box office situation improve as we get deeper into September? We'll just have to wait and find out with the diverse slate of new releases set to hit theaters on Friday. This lineup includes the Ayan Mukerji's fantasy adventure Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, Zach Cregger's horror feature Barbarian, and Petr Jákl's historical drama Medieval. David Leitch's Bullet Train doesn't just have an amazing ensemble cast; the film also features a number of stellar cameos. And while it's unquestionably the shortest of the bunch, the quick appearance by Ryan Reynolds in the third act is most definitely a highlight. In hindsight, it's not too surprising that the Canadian actor would show up in the movie, given that he previously worked with Leitch on both Deadpool 2 and Hobbs & Shaw – but what you probably don't know is the specific way that the director got Reynolds on board the project.

Reflecting on Deadpool 2, you may remember that Brad Pitt cameos as the invisible member of the X-Force, The Vanisher – though his role entirely consists of depicting the character's death via electrocution. In an interview with Insider, David Leitch explained that he only needed to remind Ryan Reynolds of that fun bit to get him involved with Bullet Train, as it ostensibly became Reynolds' way of saying "thank you." Said Leitch,

Ryan Reynolds' role in the 2022 action film is quite possibly the exact same size as Brad Pitt's role in Deadpool 2 – though his character definitely has more impact on the movie's plot. At the end of Bullet Train, it's revealed by Michael Shannon's The White Death that all of the assassins in the ensemble were purposefully put on the titular high-speed rain together so that they would all end up killing one another... and Brad Pitt's Ladybug is the only one who is there by mistake. Ladybug only got the call to be on the train when another professional killer named Carver called out sick, and movie-goes see Reynolds play Carver in an extremely brief flashback. 

As Brad Pitt explained in an interview with CinemaBlend last month, it's all part of a wheel of cameos that the Bullet Train star wants to keep rolling. Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock both have surprise roles in the August blockbuster as a follow-up to The Lost City – which hit theaters back in March and features a special appearance by Pitt in a small supporting role. What will Pitt, Reynolds, Tatum, and Bullock get up to next together, and who else can they bring into the fun? Only time will tell.

Starring Brian Tyree Henry, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Zazie Beetz, Logan Lerman, Joey King, Hiroyuki Sanada, Andrew Koji, and more in addition to Brad Pitt, Bullet Train is still playing in theaters everywhere and got back to second place in the box office rankings this weekend.

Spoilers for Bullet Train ahead!

It’s become par for the course that if you are going to see a David Leitch movie, you should expect some sort of massive A-List celebrity cameo. With Brad Pitt showing up for .2 seconds in Deadpool 2 and Ryan Reynolds popping up in Hobbs & Shaw, audiences were left wondering who would make a minuscule appearance among the stellar ensemble cast of Bullet Train. In a serendipitous manner, it turns out that Channing Tatum was the big surprise waiting on the train, and he has finally addressed it.

Playing the aptly named Train Passenger, Channing Tatum enters the film when Brad Pitt’s character Ladybug asks him if he’d mind wearing his bucket hat to distract one of the assassins trying to kill him. This poor passenger was just trying to read a book, and, as Tatum wrote in his Instagram post, the ride got “a little weird.”

The cameo consists of Ladybug offering Channing Tatum’s character $200 to distract the assassins looking for him. Tatum is way less concerned with the danger of the situation and instead asks if this is all some “sex thing.” On Channing Tatum’s post of him reading his book, the @bulletttrainmovie referenced the nature of his cameo by commenting:

The cameo added to the cheeky nature of the movie and Channing Tatum added even more humor into an already funny movie. The role was reminiscent of surprise appearance in Ryan Reynolds’ movie Free Guy where he plays the avatar of a stay-at-home adult child in the video game. This goes to show that Channing Tatum can bring the funny, even if he’s only in a movie for a couple of minutes. 

At least for me, Channing Tatum’s cameo was one of my favorite bits of Bullet Train. He threw the audience, and the assassins, off rhythm. For those of us who saw The Lost City, his appearance also created a super fun connection between the two movies. 

After David Leitch and Brad Pitt teamed up in Deadpool 2, they both got on board to create Bullet Train. An aspect of Deadpool that Pitt really loved was the cameos incorporated. Brad Pitt explained that he had a lot of fun with Channing Tatum's cameo, especially since he had a cameo-adjacent role in Tatum’s movie The Lost City as a Fabio-ish man who attempts to help Tatum save Sandra Bullock. 

The Lost City, which was released earlier this year and is now in the Paramount+ movie library, stars Bullock, who also shows up in Bullet Train as Brad Pitt’s handler. The cameos are everywhere!

Bullet Train topped the box office in its opening weekend and left audiences thinking about all the fun surprises that hopped on and off the crazy train cars. It also keeps the fun cycle of cameos in movies that star Brad Pitt, Channing Tatum, Sandra Bullock and/or Ryan Reynolds alive, and it will be exciting to see how they mix and match next.

It has been been often repeated in the last few months how amazing summer 2022 has been for the box office. The theatrical industry was rocked in many ways during the pandemic, but we've seen hit after hit come out since early May, with big winners including Joseph Kosinski's Top Gun: Maverick, Colin Trevorrow's Jurassic World: Dominion, Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, and Kyle Balda's Minions: The Rise Of Gru. Unfortunately, things have been slowing down a bit since August started – and that's opened the door for a mid-month surprise and an unconventional top film at the box office.

While one may have thought that a thriller featuring Idris Elba going toe-to-toe with a ferocious lion would be exactly the kind of movie that would succeed in late summer, Baltasar Kormákur's Beast failed its bid to become the new #1 Movie In America, as that title now belongs to Tetsuro Kodama's Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.  Check out the full Top 10 below, and join me after for analysis!

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Sits At The Top Of The Domestic Box Office Chart As Anime Fans Show Up In Big Numbers

Those who have been tracking the weekend box office results since the start of the pandemic will note that Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is the first anime title to make it to the tippy top of the domestic chart, but the success of the new movie is arguably part of a trend we've been seeing since last year. It started in April 2021, when Simon McQuoid's Mortal Kombat dealt with some serious competition from Haruo Sotozaki's Demon Slayer in its second week of release. The latter film ultimately took the #1 spot seven days later.

The popularity of Japanese animation also made a significant dent on the box office back in March. When Seong-Hu Park's Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie premiered, didn't sell quite enough tickets to out-gross Matt Reeves' The Batman in the superhero movie's third weekend, but it did push Reuben Fleischer's Uncharted to third place for the first time, making $18 million in its first three days.

Released by Crunchyroll domestically, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is the first anime film since the start of the pandemic to be released in the United States and Canada and be declared the highest-grossing title in its opening weekend. The estimates say that it won't make as much in its first three days as the aforementioned Demon Slayer, which made $22.8 million when it came out in April 2021, but the $20.1 million it made is huge, and was more than enough to secure the franchise movie's position on the chart (per The Numbers).

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is the twenty-first feature film in the Dragon Ball franchise, and the movie's performance in the United States and Canada is exceeding what the anime was able to do in Japan (where it was release back in June). According to Box Office Mojo, the film has made $18.1 million outside of North America.

Exactly how sustainable the success will be is a big question mark at the moment. The other anime movies I mentioned all tended to have front-loaded opening weekends, with dedicated fans showing up in the first few days of the feature's release, and then leaving the film to fade from the box office rankings. It's unclear if that will happen with Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, and that's mostly because of the circumstance that led to the movie's success in the last few days: a lack of big competition.

Beast Does Only About Half The Business Of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero And Settles For Second Place

While everyone behind Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is likely celebrating the film's the domestic release this weekend, there isn't too much to be celebrated about the box office earnings for Beast. The new creature feature thriller featuring Idris Elba protecting his family from a revenge-seeking lion wasn't made with a ridiculous budget – $36 million, according to Variety – but the movie has a long way to go before its considered a financial success following its $11.6 million debut.

Beast earned middling reviews in the middle of last week, and it seems that has translated to mediocre earnings. The total from its first three days in release means that it had just the twenty-ninth biggest opening weekend of 2022 thus far, the film having made less than Robert Eggers' The Northman back in April ($12.3 million) and more than what Roland Emmerich's Moonfall made when it came out in February ($9.9 million).

On the hunt for silver linings, one bit of good news is that Beast's box office numbers are being bolstered by overseas performance. The film was released in a number of foreign markets earlier this month prior to its domestic release, and thus far that has translated to an extra $10.3 million added to its worldwide totals. To date, the movie has made $21.9 million globally – but it will need to make a hell of a lot more than that if its going to be looked at as a success.

Looking ahead, next weekend will bring summer 2022 to a close – but will it conclude with a bang or a whimper? Everyone behind Jessica M. Thompson's The Invitation and George Miller's Three Thousand Years Of Longing are surely hoping for the former, as the pair of titles will be arriving in wide release. Bullet Train gifted fans with a very silly, but badass, action story led by Brad Pitt. David Leitch’s latest movie has a lot to offer, but many fans like myself may have really appreciated its various nods to a certain fictional locomotive. The world of Thomas the Tank Engine plays into the film’s bombastic events in very funny, and sweet, ways. While the nods that were present within the finished production were nice enough, it turns out there was one major Thomas reference that was removed. 

In the movie, skilled British assassin Lemon (played delightfully by Brian Tyree Henry) is established as being a major fan of Thomas the Tank Engine. The brutally honest character explains during the movie that the children’s show was instrumental in teaching him how to read people. Some may be kind and cheeky like Thomas, while others might be more unsavory like the devious Diesel. Lemon occasionally classifies people by giving them stickers of the Thomas characters that best align with their demeanors. 

These stickers are nice visual cues that are enough to make one chuckle, especially if they have long loved the Island of Sodor’s little blue engine. But during the Bullet Train premiere, composer Dominic Lewis revealed that the film was meant to have yet another nod to the iconic franchise. Apparently, Lewis was planning to inject a very familiar tune into the score:

As someone who grew up loving the franchise, I would’ve been pumped to hear an operatic version of the original Thomas theme song. I can’t even imagine how incredible it would’ve been to hear that music blasting through the IMAX theater during my showing. Alas, Dominic Lewis explained that the idea didn’t get the response he was hoping for:

Despite that reception, the Fist Fight composer enjoyed his time working on the action thriller and went on to say that his director had “total trust” in what he was doing. From there, he summed the gig up as a “wonderful experience.”

I still can’t help but wonder what his take on the Thomas the Tank Engine theme would’ve sounded like, though. Nevertheless, I won’t turn my nose up at the Thomas nods David Leitch provided. They’re true novelties, especially considering how little big-screen love the Really Useful Engine gets. Personally, I still wouldn’t mind seeing what 9’s Shane Acker would do with a Thomas movie.

But as I muse about the lovable locomotive, Bullet Train has returned to the top of the box office (during what was immediately a slow weekend). Still, don’t let that keep you from seeing the movie, which touts badass action scenes in tight spaces and Brad Pitt’s distractingly “beautiful” blonde locks. I’m not sure many people would’ve imagined that such a movie would provide thrills like these and sprinkle in some Thomas references here and there, but I’m so glad it does.

When it comes to some of the best 2022 movie releases, one of the first ones that comes to my mind is Bullet Train. Ever since I saw the film, I’ve been non-stop thinking about how fun it is and how much I loved those action sequences and the hilarious moments it had to offer. 

But, since Bullet Train is only two hours long and we all need to change it up every once and a while, what are some other movies like Bullet Train that you might like? If you’re looking for something similar, here are some great picks. 

The Deadpool Movies (Disney+)

First up on the list, we have the Deadpool movies. In the first Deadpool, we follow Wade Wilson, a mercenary who -- believing it might cure his cancer -- is subjected to a grueling experiment that gives him mutant regenerative abilities, but drastically altered his physical appearance. Now, he is hunting down the man who changed him. In the second film, Deadpool 2, Wilson goes on an adventure to stop a time-traveling soldier named Cable from harming a young mutant. 

When I tell you that that Deadpool series is exactly what you would expect it to be if you’re into action, I mean that with every part of my being. Considering David Leitch, the director of Bullet Train, also directed Deadpool 2, you know at least the sequel is going to be filled with gory deaths and brilliant action scenes filled with comedy, but honestly, both movies slap and you’ll have a fun time watching them regardless - especially since there’s a Deadpool 3 in the works.

The Commuter (Amazon Rental)

Starring Liam Neeson, The Commuter tells the story of a man who is just trying to live his everyday life commuting to work on a train, but one day, he meets a strange woman that somehow ties him into a bigger conspiracy than he ever thought possible, one involving murder. 

When you think of Liam Neeson, there are so many amazing films out there that the star has been in, but I typically think of movies like this - high-paced action and some awesome fight scenes, one that Bullet Train fans will definitely enjoy. And the fact that the film takes place mostly on a train checks out too, because the tight scenery makes this movie so much fun.

Train To Busan (Amazon Prime)

When I tell you this is the best horror movie I have seen in years, I mean it. In Train to Busan, a man does everything in his power to somehow keep his daughter safe as a zombie outbreak occurs that instantly turns people into zombies, and now, he has to make sure she reaches Busan safely, where a supposed safe zone is. 

Korean horror has delivered some great titles, particularly in recent years, with big additions like All Of Us Are Dead on Netflix or even The Wailing, but this is great option for fans of Bullet Train if they're looking for another train-set movie. Train to Busan also takes place on a high-speed train, so the setting is very similar, but the bigger reason to watch is that it’s just so action packed and surprisingly packs a lot of heart into its runtime. This was genuinely the last movie I sobbed like a baby at the end - and you will too. It’s action-packed and a hell of a lot of fun.

Atomic Blonde (Amazon Rental)

Another film directed by David Leitch is Atomic Blonde. In this action packed movie starring Charlize Theron, we follow a spy who has the important mission of finding a list of double agents before it is smuggled into West Berlin, ahead of the wall collapsing, but along the way, she finds twists and turns that she never expected before. 

Atomic Blonde, in my mind, reminds me a lot of James Bond in so many ways, from the incredible action scenes to the witty one-liners to everything else in-between. For fans of Bullet Train, you will love the choreography of the fight scenes and be unable to take your eyes off the screen. Watching Charlize Theron kick butt is some of the best time you will ever spend on a Saturday afternoon. I’d give anything for an Atomic Blonde 2.

The Gray Man (Netflix)

Directed by the Russo Brothers, who also helmed Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, this original Netflix film, The Gray Man, follows a CIA agent who finds out corrupt secrets about his organization, but upon learning this, a mercenary is sent after him to hunt him down. It's a cat and mouse game as the agent tries to survive. 

For fans of Bullet Train, this is one you don’t want to miss. While the action scenes are a lot of fun -- as you would expect from a team like the Russo Brothers - what really makes this such a great film is the cast. The Gray Man cast -- including talent such as Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick and Rege Jean-Page -- is equal in talent to that of the Bullet Train cast, and truly has some amazing stars that bring in the power and make you want to keep watching them fight to the death. Just a lot of fun all around.

Central Intelligence (Amazon Rental)

Goodness, we have so many action flicks on here, let’s take a breather with some comedy. In Central Intelligence, we follow two former high school classmates who are redefining the term “high school reunion,” when one of them ends up joining the CIA. However, their attempts to save the world cause them to go on the run. 

This film was the first time we had ever seen Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart team up as stars in a movie together and boy, was it a cultural reset, because ever since then, these two are inseparable and I love their friendship. For fans of Bullet Train, you’ll love the comedy that’s presented and will definitely laugh your butt off, but the action scenes are a heck of a lot of fun too. I just can’t get over the chemistry between Johnson and Hart.

Nobody (HBO Max)

Next up on the list, we have Nobody, starring the wonderful Bob Odenkirk. In this thriller, we follow a man who has let go of his past life, but after his home is robbed and the lives of his family are threatened, he returns back to his dangerous roots in order to protect them, turning himself from a “nobody” into a “somebody.”

This film’s action sequences are fantastic, and truly need to be talked about so much more, because I could not tear my eyes off the screen. If you were infatuated with the action scenes of Bullet Train, then this is the film for you that you need to watch from beginning to end. Bob Odenkirk is amazing in this role and I’d really love to see a sequel with him.

John Wick (Amazon Rental)

You probably thought this was going to be on the list, so let’s get into it. John Wick, starring Keanu Reeves, tells the story of the titular John Wick, a former assassin who is retired, until he makes it his personal mission to hunt down the man that broke into his home and took away everything he cherished the most.

This franchise has turned into something amazing, to the point where a John Wick 4 is releasing in 2023, and guess who helped produce it? David Leitch, before his days of directing Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde. For fans of action scenes, oh boy, this is the film for you, especially if you loved Bullet Train. So many amazing moments - and Keanu Reeves is always a win.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (Amazon Rental)

Next up on the list, we have the Quentin Tarantino film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. This film follows an actor and his stunt double trying to adapt to the new film industry, while murders around Hollywood begin to happen, threatening their lives. 

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has been described as a “love letter” to the golden age of Hollywood, and I can see why. The movie is a hell of a good time and really well-done. For fans of Bullet Train, this film also stars Brad Pitt and he’s really good in it -- so good that he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, so if you loved his performance in an action film like Bullet Train, check him out in this one.

Snatch (Netflix)

Another great Brad Pitt-led film. Starring several big-time names like Pitt, Benicio del Toro, Jason Statham and more, Snatch follows multiple different stories, one about a stolen diamond and the hunt to find it and another regarding a boxing promoter who is getting singled out by a gangster that isn’t afraid to resort of violence. 

For fans of Bullet Train, this film also has Brad Pitt, as I said before, but the action scenes are also a lot of fun as well within the crime world, and something else I really enjoyed is the comedy. The amount of one liners that were dropped were some of the best moments of the movie and truly made me chuckle many times.

Police Story (HBO Max)

Last, but not least, we have a king of action on this list, Jackie Chan, starring in Police Story, which came out in 1985. This action comedy follows Jackie Chan as a police detective in Hong Kong who has to protect a female witness from a drug lord that she used to work with, but in the process, ends up getting framed for murder. Now, it’s up to him to try and clear his name before he meets his doom. 

If you loved the action scenes in Bullet Train, this is the movie for you, as Jackie Chan is certainly known for his great stunts. And we have Police Story included on our list Jackie Chan's best movies.

So many great options, so little time, but no matter what you pick, you’re going to have a lot of fun. I have to go watch Deadpool again and put in my maximum effort, thank you.  

When it comes to action movies, as a kid, I was never the biggest fan. I was more of a fantasy film kind of girl, using those as a means of escape and imagining I was in the world of Harry Potter or some other land. However, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that action films are a hell of a good time. 

While there have been other action movies that have come out recently that have truly tested how I feel about the genre, from Top Gun: Maverick to Red Notice, one movie recently in 2022 was the film that changed it all for me - and that was Bullet Train, starring Brad Pitt and a hell of a lot of stars. 

I’ve seen the film - and if you’re reading this, I’m assuming you have as well because we're about to talk spoilers here - and these were the moments I just could not stop talking about. 

The Wolf And Ladybug's Big Fight Was Intense And Hilarious

Let me tell you, when I first heard that Bad Bunny -- otherwise known as Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio -- was in the cast for this movie, I was stunned. I didn’t know that he could even act, but as a fan of his music, I was curious to see his performance in this movie and wowie, I was blown away by how well he handled the fight choreography. 

That first fight scene in Bullet Train, when Ocasio’s character, The Wolf, steps onto the train and mistakes Pitt’s character, Ladybug, for the person who killed his whole entire family, was intense. And not to mention hilarious. Pitt dropped some seriously funny one-liners, such as the classic “Dude, I don’t even know you!” and “Did you just stab me?!” Hilarious. 

And the fight itself was a ton of fun as well. Watching these two men swing back and forth with each other, including the effective use of that briefcase in order for Ladybug to have the upper hand, was some of the best choreography that I’ve seen in a long time in a film. Seriously so good. 

Tangerine And Lemon Need Their Own Prequel Movie Or Something

I need this now, Sony. 

These two need their own film, or franchise, or I don’t even know. All I do know is that out of everyone on the Bullet Train cast, Bryan Tyree Henry and Aaron Taylor-Johnson were the best performers and had some of the funniest chemistry.

Seriously, I could watch a whole entire movie of just these two bickering with each other for hours on end and I don’t believe I’ll ever get bored. While they’re brothers in the film, it almost feels as if they’re related in real life with how well their chemistry is and while they have conflicting personalities, they just get each other in the best way possible. 

What makes it even better is how Lemon gets his revenge for Tangerine’s demise in the end - but we’ll get to that later. 

The Prince Is Lowkey Sick To Be Using A Child In Order To Get What She Wants

I’ve watched Joey King for years, from her time in The Kissing Booth cast to her most recent 2022 entry, The Princess, but I really enjoyed seeing her in Bullet Train. It felt like another attempt by her to step out of that romantic comedy box that she’s been in for several years with Netflix and the Kissing Booth series, a return to more dramatic form for the young actor whose other credits include The Act miniseries. 

And while I did enjoy her character, The Prince, in Bullet Train, and how ruthless she could be in order to gain her father’s attention, I have to say, using Yuichi’s son as bait to keep Yuichi in line is so messed up. While she’s certainly one of the main antagonists of this film, it felt almost too far for her to use a child in order to keep Yuichi in line. Thank God the Elder had backup to make sure Yuichi's son would be alright.

This Movie Needed More Zazie Beetz 

I am so upset that I didn’t get to see Zazie Beetz more. This is Zazie Beetz. She is badass. She was Domino in Deadpool 2. She’s Van in Atlanta. She was even in Joker, which she just might be reprising the role in the sequel. So when I saw her in the trailers for the film, I was understandably excited. 

Her character officially gets introduced around the midway point of Bullet Train. We get her for basically five minutes and then she’s dead. 

Beetz’s fight scene with Pitt was astounding and her using the boomslang poison as one of her weapons against Ladybug was awesome, but then she was injected with the poison and Ladybug ended up using her only antidote injection. And within minutes she’s dead. I was so sad. I wanted to see her as The Hornet so much more, and yet, it felt as if I didn’t get that chance at all. 

Lemon Makes Me Want To Get My Own Thomas The Tank Engine Stickers

In all seriousness, though, Lemon did have a point with his stickers and how he uses his knowledge of Thomas the Tank Engine characters to see the good in people and the bad in people, and it’s a lesson I think we can learn from, if only to pick out the diesels that we need to get rid of. 

Even so, those stickers are looking real good right now. 

Ladybug, Lemon, Yuichi And The Elder Vs The White Death And His Men Was The Best Fight Scene In The Movie 

I could not tear my eyes away from this scene for a single moment. I was astounded from beginning to end in the way this final fight scene was choreographed, from the deaths of some of The White Death’s men to how Lemon “sacrifices” himself and pushes one of the bad guys off the train and into the river down below. Everything was just so well done. 

And then of course we need to go over the last part, where the train has officially derailed, and it seems like the good guys have won until The White Death emerges and tries to shoot Ladybug. His first gun doesn’t have any bullets, so he uses the gun his daughter aimed at him - and, thanks to her installing a bomb in it, it explodes the moment he fires, killing him. 

But of course, The Prince can’t go unpunished, and it’s not that long before a giant truck of tangerines comes flying at her and runs her over -- driven by Lemon, who managed to survive and is aiming to get revenge on the girl for manipulating both him and his brother and inadvertently causing the death of Tangerine. It’s so poetic in the most brutal way and I love it. 

Sandra Bullock Was Gravely Underused

This is another case where I really think this actress could have been used so much more in Bullet Train. I mean, come on, this is Academy Award-winner, Sandra Bullock and yet it felt like she was barely in the movie. 

While yes, she was certainly in Ladybug’s ear pretty much the whole time, trying to get him through this chaotic mission, we only really get to see her in person a few times throughout this whole two hour flick. She was so funny in her voice-over performance opposite Brad Pitt, and I would have loved to see her more on screen. 

Bullet Train was a heck of a good time and something I won’t forget for a while, and for those who want a good action movie, I’d suggest just going to the theater and seeing this one again, just for the fun of it.
