                            <article>
                                <p>This week marks the release of Steven Spielberg's <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/reviews/2388121/ready-player-one-review" data-original-url="https://www.cinemablend.com/reviews/2388121/ready-player-one-review"><em>Ready Player One</em></a>, a film that sees the director returning to the kind of adventure filmmaking that immortalized his career and established modern blockbuster filmmaking. This event has everyone looking back on the career of the legendary director, and Spielberg's name is everywhere at the moment. One company is trying to capitalize on all the Spielberg love in order to sell... hamburgers. Yes, fast food chain Carl's Jr. is paying tribute to the man himself by introducing SpielBurgers, though not if Warner Bros has anything to say about it. Take a look at Carl's Jr.'s initial pitch:</p><div class="see-more see-more--clipped"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet hawk-ignore" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"><a href="https://twitter.com/cantworkitout/status/978253988142358530"></a></p></blockquote><div class="see-more__filter"></div></div><p>That's not bad. It teases something special and magical, complete with John Williams-esque music, before showing you a hamburger wearing VR goggles. How has no other company noticed this opening before? We should have been eating SpielBurgers for ages; a limited time culinary event, like the McRib or the Mulan <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/television/2316062/mcdonalds-is-bringing-szechuan-sauce-back-will-try-not-to-enrage-rick-and-morty-fans-again" data-original-url="https://www.cinemablend.com/television/2316062/mcdonalds-is-bringing-szechuan-sauce-back-will-try-not-to-enrage-rick-and-morty-fans-again">Szechuan Sauce</a>, coinciding with the release of each new Spielberg film. Perhaps Steven Spielberg is just particular about what amalgamation of salt and grease he slaps his name onto, although looking at some of the movies he's produced... Anyway, Warner Bros. was quick to put the kibosh on this burger campaign in a very 'matter of fact' fashion.</p><div class="see-more see-more--clipped"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet hawk-ignore" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"><a href="https://twitter.com/cantworkitout/status/978388089549697025"></a></p></blockquote><div class="see-more__filter"></div></div><p>Aww, come on, Warner Bros., don't be such sticks in the mud. Nothing screams revolutionary technology and grand adventure quite like a tiny hamburger manufactured on a grand scale and sold to a demanding public. If anything, thanks to McDonald's Happy Meals, our pop culture has a longstanding history of intertwining with the <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/news/2317701/the-fast-food-jennifer-lawrence-craved-while-filming-red-sparrow" data-original-url="https://www.cinemablend.com/news/2317701/the-fast-food-jennifer-lawrence-craved-while-filming-red-sparrow">fast food</a> industry. <a href="https://twitter.com/wbpictures/status/978396247420579840">Twitter</a> is not a venue for de-escalation though, so this ratcheted up as the Carl's Jr. account asked for Steven Spielberg's contact info. Warner Bros. denied the request. At that point, Carl's Jr. responded in a way that tee'd up Warner Bros. perfectly to question the class of the fast food restaurant. Check it out:</p><div class="see-more see-more--clipped"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet hawk-ignore" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"><a href="https://twitter.com/cantworkitout/status/978396247420579840"></a></p></blockquote><div class="see-more__filter"></div></div><p>Damn, burned almost as bad as those burgers! Questioning whether or not a company, whose commercials have featured <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/television/It-Takes-How-Many-Cheeseburgers-Film-Sexy-Carl-Jr-Commercials-68123.html" data-original-url="https://www.cinemablend.com/television/It-Takes-How-Many-Cheeseburgers-Film-Sexy-Carl-Jr-Commercials-68123.html">half-naked women eating burgers</a>, owns formal wear is brilliant. Still though, I think WB was going easy on Carl's Jr. Either that or it missed the opening. Personally, I would have gone for the jugular and remarked how, just like <em>Ready Player One</em>'s OASIS, Carl's Jr.'s burgers almost look like the real thing. That's low-hanging fruit perhaps, but Carl's Jr. has a history of absurd and ridiculous marketing, so it should be able to laugh at itself. And it appears that Carl's Jr. may have had the last laugh anyways, as unlike most social media disputes, the fast food joint was ready to take it to the streets and put its burgers where its mouth is. Observe:</p><div class="see-more see-more--clipped"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet hawk-ignore" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"><a href="https://twitter.com/cantworkitout/status/978696994158866433"></a></p></blockquote><div class="see-more__filter"></div></div><p>Staged? Almost certainly. But still, this is a fun little stunt. Personalizing each SpielBurger to represent one of the director's classic films, as well as <em>Ready Player One</em>, was a nice touch as well. A company's social media game has to be on point in today's market. Up until this point Wendy's has been the undisputed <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/news/1737072/wendys-reaction-to-logan-other-2017-movies-is-an-a" data-original-url="https://www.cinemablend.com/news/1737072/wendys-reaction-to-logan-other-2017-movies-is-an-a">social media champ</a> among fast food companies, but Carl's Jr. is clearly making a play for the crown. <em>Ready Player One</em> hits theaters on March 29. For all the latest in the ongoing fast food/movie <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/news/1558060/one-fast-food-chain-has-a-real-beef-with-dcs-upcoming-wonder-woman-movie" data-original-url="https://www.cinemablend.com/news/1558060/one-fast-food-chain-has-a-real-beef-with-dcs-upcoming-wonder-woman-movie">industry wars</a>, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.</p>

There’s the slow motion theme music and the necessary beautiful woman aggressively eating a Carl's Jr. sandwich. Juxtaposing the quick shots of her intense training with her beauty likens her to the nature of the sandwich: a knockout with a sweet side. Now that’s some Don Draper-level advertising right there.</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="NAfX8JZ4FVYfMqXbpEyLSQ" name="" alt="screenshot rousey" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NAfX8JZ4FVYfMqXbpEyLSQ.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NAfX8JZ4FVYfMqXbpEyLSQ.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p>While <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/television/It-Takes-How-Many-Cheeseburgers-Film-Sexy-Carl-Jr-Commercials-68123.html" data-original-url="http://www.cinemablend.com/television/It-Takes-How-Many-Cheeseburgers-Film-Sexy-Carl-Jr-Commercials-68123.html">Carl's Jr. commercials</a> have taken a great deal of heat over the years for their <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/television/Watch-Uncut-Version-Burger-Commercial-Featuring-Playmate-Sara-Underwood-46388.html" data-original-url="http://www.cinemablend.com/television/Watch-Uncut-Version-Burger-Commercial-Featuring-Playmate-Sara-Underwood-46388.html">depiction of women</a>, this one seems to be a step in the right direction. Ronda Rousey is objectively an attractive woman, and the ad plays to that, but it also completely shows her in her element. She’s not Paris Hilton; she neither straddles a car, nor does she lie on a sandy beach -- she throws punches, she sweats--all like a pro--and then she gets to celebrate with a sandwich.</p><p>Even in the moments when she wears make-up and lets her hair down, she still wears her sports bra and athletic tape, emphasizing her status as a legitimate athlete, and not a piece of eye candy. One could just as easily replace Rousey with a professional male fighter, and the content could have come out similarly.</p><p>Ronda Rousey has captured the spotlight over the last few years for doing what this ad depicts perfectly: being beautiful as well as badass. At 28 years old, she has become an MMA phenomenon, going 12 UFC matches undefeated. She has parlayed this popularity into a burgeoning film career, taking roles in films ranging from <em>The Expendables 3</em>, to <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/new/UFC-Champ-Ronda-Rousey-Up-Fast-Furious-7-Expendables-3-38899.html" data-original-url="http://www.cinemablend.com/new/UFC-Champ-Ronda-Rousey-Up-Fast-Furious-7-Expendables-3-38899.html"><em>Furious 7</em></a>, to this summer’s <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/reviews/Entourage-66595.html" data-original-url="http://www.cinemablend.com/reviews/Entourage-66595.html"><em>Entourage</em></a>. This success could eventually lead her to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/new/Ronda-Rousey-Wants-Play-Ms-Marvel-Have-Fun-Telling-Her-76487.html" data-original-url="http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Ronda-Rousey-Wants-Play-Ms-Marvel-Have-Fun-Telling-Her-76487.html">Captain Marvel</a>--although she faces stiff competition on that front.</p><p>Whether or not you want to go out and buy a Carl’s Jr. breakfast sandwich after watching that video is entirely your call – but it’s safe to say that the ad did manage to capture Rousey’s two defining characteristic: foxy and fierce.</p>

Check out what happens when the Canadian Université de Moncton tries to sell fooling around in the library in its latest ad. We’re not joking. Take a look, below.</p><p><iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="338" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/hSwSIALZZqE?rel=0" width="600"></iframe></p><p>There are plenty of trademark college moments present in the promotional video, including sports teams and science labs, but there’s also one very weird addition: fooling around in the stacks. The whole ad is in French, so if you aren’t a French speaker, go ahead and skip to the 10-second mark, where you can catch two of the University of Moncton students kissing, of the French variety. Better yet, just take a look at that tongue-wagging action.</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="6AhFBRwDmqxENA7Nci7JSR" name="" alt="”makeout”" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/6AhFBRwDmqxENA7Nci7JSR.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/6AhFBRwDmqxENA7Nci7JSR.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p>According to the <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/student-kiss-in-university-video-sets-tongues-wagging-1.2919259">CBC News</a>, the video takes advantage of the word “langue,” which is both the word for language and the word for tongue in French, within the library scene. It's kind of clever, however, some of the people involved with the university have called out the video as being in <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/pop/University-Kansas-Officials-Threaten-Popular-KUBoobs-Twitter-Account-56649.html" data-original-url="http://www.cinemablend.com/pop/University-Kansas-Officials-Threaten-Popular-KUBoobs-Twitter-Account-56649.html">poor taste</a>, noting that while they are trying to make the <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/pop/University-Tennessee-Suspends-Frat-Over-Butt-Chugging-Incident-47422.html" data-original-url="http://www.cinemablend.com/pop/University-Tennessee-Suspends-Frat-Over-Butt-Chugging-Incident-47422.html">university</a> seem hip and popular, it is also selling the University of Moncton “like it's a beer product.” Or a <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/television/It-Takes-How-Many-Cheeseburgers-Film-Sexy-Carl-Jr-Commercials-68123.html" data-original-url="http://www.cinemablend.com/television/It-Takes-How-Many-Cheeseburgers-Film-Sexy-Carl-Jr-Commercials-68123.html">cheeseburger</a>.</p><p>Other people seem to think the advertisement is kind-of amusing and playful. Beyond what some people might think of the ad, the university is sticking to its guns with the advertisement and will continue to roll it out. The ad is set to hit Radio-Canada television very soon and is expected to play through the month of March, so if you live in the area, expect to see the video over and over again. At least it doesn’t feature a “can’t get it outta my head” sort of jingle or excessive partying.</p><p>Look, college campuses have long been rife with legends and stories about fooling around in the stacks of dusty old libraries. The university was probably trying to be fun and cool with its advertisement, and while I don’t personally think it's the most graceful ad I've ever seen, if the University of Muncton was hoping to prove that it’s a fun, sexy university, it definitely made that point. Negative Nancy’s need not apply.</p>

In facts, she had to take bites out of more than 3 dozen cheeseburgers while shooting the short commercial.</p><div><blockquote><p>“I bit into 40 cold burgers in one night from about midnight until five or six in the morning. That was great.”</p></blockquote></div><p>If you didn’t already guess, that last line was sarcasm, but seriously, 40! She had to bite into 40 of those suckers, and she also mentions that they were cold. That’s pretty gross. No, it’s really gross. There are few women who would dare to eat one Carl’s Jr. monster burger, much less bite in to 40. And they were Buffalo Blue Cheese Burgers, to boot. On the bright side, I guess she was paid for it, and luckily, you can’t tell at all how disgusting the experience was in the final product. In fact, she really, really looks like she is enjoying every bit of that blue cheese monstrosity.</p><p><iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="338" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/dABoLDOArMA" width="600"></iframe></p><p>The commercial may have been hard for Webb to shoot thanks to the late night shoot and all the cold burgers bites she had to take, but I’d say it’s not a bad gig for a lady who made a name for herself back in 2012 while dating then Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron. At the time, she became part of a controversy after <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/television/ESPN-Just-Suspended-Bill-Simmons-Epic-Rant-67505.html" data-original-url="http://www.cinemablend.com/television/ESPN-Just-Suspended-Bill-Simmons-Epic-Rant-67505.html">ESPN</a> forced commenter Brent Musburger to apologize for calling her beautiful on air. She handled the whole thing lightly, and then ended up landing the Carl’s Jr. commercial for her troubles. I’d call that a win. The commercial, which first aired last year, even references the entire ESPN debacle, to boot.</p><p>Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the filming of the commercial. Note that she doesn’t seem too bent out of shape about eating the burgers at the time.</p><p><iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="338" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/RISVhICHGWc" width="600"></iframe></p><p>I guess that’s probably the type of thing you <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/pop/10-Worst-Modern-Fast-Food-Dining-Innovations-62734.html" data-original-url="http://www.cinemablend.com/pop/10-Worst-Modern-Fast-Food-Dining-Innovations-62734.html">regret</a> the next day, anyway.</p>

Kate Upton and Kim Kardashian have both sold burgers for the chain in the past, but the raciest ad I’ve ever seen may have actually been the Memphis BBQ Burger commercial, which features Playmate of the Year Sara Underwood and <i>iCarly’s</i> Emily Ratajkowski grilling in scantily clad costumes.</p><p>The original ad is pretty racy, with some not-so-subtle references to women as ‘pieces of meat.’ However, <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2012/08/31/carls-jr-hardees-burger-commercial-uncensored-sara-jean-underwood-emily-ratajkowski/">TMZ</a> recently acquired the uncut version of the commercial, and it blows what aired on television out of the water. The video features a whole scene shot behind the girls in order to take advantage of the high cut and low slung shorts the two are wearing. Additionally, Ratajkowski, even gets in a leg pop, which was really cute when Anne Hathaway did it in <i>The Princess Diaries</i>, but fails to resemble anything but sex appeal, here.</p><p><iframe data-quill-615-old-src="http://cdnapi.kaltura.com/index.php/kwidget/wid/1_noe943qm/uiconf_id/6740162/st_cache/88344?referer=http://www.tmz.com/videos/0_0xl4pws8&" height="330" id="kaltura_player_1346524775" src="//cdnapi.kaltura.com/index.php/kwidget/wid/1_noe943qm/uiconf_id/6740162/st_cache/88344?referer=http://www.tmz.com/videos/0_0xl4pws8&" style="border: 0px solid #ffffff;" width="587" name="kaltura_player_1346524775">Unfortunately your browser does not support IFrames.</iframe></p><p>The original video toned down the rating a little bit by showing less shots with the girl’s butts peeking out, but is otherwise pretty similar. At any rate, everyone should be impressed by Ratajkowski’s toned abs. In case you’ve forgotten what those look like, we’ve got the original version of the commercial for you, as well.</p><p><iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" data-quill-615-old-src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Sc9Kd6IdQn0" frameborder="0" height="270" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Sc9Kd6IdQn0" width="480"></iframe></p><p>I don’t see how the Carl’s Jr./Hardees could possibly top this ad in terms of raciness but, hell, I’m sure the company will try.</p>
