It’s not every day a Hollywood blockbuster makes cinematic history, not just at the box office, but in the way it absolutely goes for it on screen. When Jurassic World roared into theaters in 2015, it gave audiences one of the most unexpectedly brutal death scenes in modern blockbuster and Jurassic series history. This is the wild story of how the sequence came to be and how the actress played a hand in one of the franchise's most unforgettable exits.

More than a decade later, the internet still hasn’t let go of this brutal on-screen death, likely because we can revisit it over and over with a Peacock subscription. The scene in question? Zara Young’s mid-air dino juggling act turned Mosasaurus snack attack. The conversation flared back up when X (formerly Twitter) user @DynamoSuperX posted a clip of the Jurassic character's death, with the caption:

From there, it snowballed. Another post by @americanrequiem added fuel to the fire by sharing a clip from behind the scenes. If you watch it below, you can hear the actress Katie McGrath talk about the gruesome moment about to take place, and she sounds pumped.

The sequence, if you’ve somehow avoided it, shows McGrath’s character being scooped up by Pteranodon, dropped into the maws of another, screaming mid-air before the gigantic Mosasaurus devours her—essentially the dinosaur death equivalent of a Final Destination Rube Goldberg machine death. The scene is as brutal as it is bizarrely elaborate, and it left a lot of people wondering: Why this character, and why that death? The real answer is that Katie McGrath asked for it.

Katie McGrath Demanded A Memorable Death

McGrath, best known for her TV roles as Morgana in Merlin and Lena Luthor on Supergirl, had just landed her first big studio blockbuster role when she joined the cast of Jurassic World as Zara Young, Claire Dearing’s high-strung personal assistant. Her screen time was limited, but McGrath made it count by requesting a memorable death that would leave an impression. Director Colin Trevorrow was entirely on board.

As he mentioned to UPROXX in 2016, he wanted Zara’s demise to be shocking, calling it an “unearned death,” one where a seemingly safe, undeserving character is killed brutally to throw the audience off balance.

What we got was a full-blown dino attack that is more gruesome than some of the deaths in the best horror movies I've seen. And here’s the twist: McGrath did every part of it herself. She was strapped into a harness, hoisted into the air, dropped into a massive water tank, and filmed as she thrashed underwater. In the behind-the-scenes footage above, McGrath joked about the torment they were putting her through, but it was all very intense.

Others behind the scenes reveal she's got no wire on her at first, but that stunt people had to come and add the wires mid-scene so she could get "flung" into the air. Scary.

The Scene's Over-the-Top Legacy

McGrath’s death scene instantly stood out in a movie packed with dinosaur carnage. It was the first time in the franchise a female character was killed on-screen, and it remains arguably the most brutal. Even Jurassic Park Original cast member and legend Sam Neill weighed in during a press junket, asking with a smirk:

Critics and fans remain split on the scene to this day. Some found it unnecessarily mean-spirited, even calling it “deeply unsettling” (Birth.Movies.Death), while others hailed it as one of the most memorable kills in the franchise. Whether you loved it or hated it, there’s no denying its impact. Zara’s death has been the subject of conversation for more than a decade. And all because Katie McGrath wanted to make a splash, and that, she did—literally! The actress made history as the first on-screen death of a female character in a Jurassic movie. Pretty cool.

For a guy who has repeatedly claimed he’s retired from making movies, Jim Carrey seems to be working a lot. He came “out of retirement" to film Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a movie that had him playing two roles, and before we even make it to the already confirmed Sonic the Hedgehog 4, the comedian is looking to join a new franchise that's truly out there.

Jim Carrey Is Circling The Jetsons (In A Flying Car, I Suppose)

In a new report from The Wrap, Jim Carrey is reportedly in talks to lead a live-action cast as family patriarch George Jetson for a movie based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon of the same name about a futuristic family living in the space age. I cannot wait to see what his hair looks like if this happens.

Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow is in talks to direct the film and is also in talks to write alongside Joe Epstein. No other casting is being reported at this time, but one assumes the full Jetsons family, including wife Jane, daughter Judy, and son Elroy, will also be along for the ride, alongside other characters from the cartoon like the family robot-maid Rosie and George’s boss Mr. Spacely.

The Jetsons was a futuristic counterpart to Hanna-Barbera’s Stone Age cartoon, The Flintstones. Both series were essentially sitcoms focused on traditional topics of work and family, with the twist being the setting for each, which put mundane modern middle-class life in wildly different time periods.

There have been previous attempts to adapt The Jetsons for a live-action movie, as well as a live-action Jetsons TV series, but those have all fallen apart before the movie could be made. With these major names attached, that could be enough to make this time different.

George Jetson Could Be A Good Fit For Jim Carrey

While Jim Carrey, currently at 63 years old, is a bit older than George Jetson is traditionally portrayed, it’s not hard to see that he would be a good fit for the role of George Jetson. Carrey‘s persona on screen has never been far from that of a cartoon character. He’s already played wild characters like The Mask and The Grinch, and is currently riding high on his performance as Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies.

With The Jetsons seemingly so early in development that it doesn’t yet have a script, one could potentially be tailored to Jim Carrey if he signs on. Because the project is so early in development, it’s unlikely the film will run into any conflicts with Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which currently has a 2027 release date. Carrey has not been officially announced for that project yet, but he is expected to return, especially considering his performance(s) in the previous Sonic movie were widely seen as the highlight of that film.

For years, I (and maybe other Jurassic World fans) have wondered why the Jurassic Universe never fully embraced the mayhem of dinosaurs tearing through big cities. Sure, we’ve seen brief glimpses of raptors in suburban kitchens or T. Rexes eyeing helicopters over San Francisco. But, for the most part, the series has kept its chaos in jungles, islands, and remote facilities. Now, ahead of the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth, we finally know why, and it has to do with the man who birthed the franchise, Michael Crichton.

Colin Trevorrow -- who wrote all three of the Jurassic World films and directed two of them -- spoke with the The Hollywood Reporter. On the whole, Trevorrow spearheaded that trilogy's direction. During this latest chat, he shared that his restrained approach to urban dinosaur action wasn’t due to budget or scale. It was a creative decision grounded in Crichton’s original vision for the series. According to the filmmaker:

That internal logic of treating dinosaurs more like unpredictable, instinctual creatures than movie monsters informed how far the director of The Book of Henry was willing to push the premise. While he and his team explored ways for dinosaurs to interact with human civilization, including in Jurassic World Dominion and the animated series Chaos Theory (available with a Netflix subscription), there was always a limit. And that limit was grounded in tone. Trevorrow added:

That distinction, between controlled narrative spectacle and full-on monster mayhem, helps explain why even in Dominion, a film where dinosaurs are loose across the globe, the story remains tethered to rural settings and isolated locations. It’s a nod to Crichton’s science-meets-ethics worldbuilding, where the core tension lies in man's attempt to control nature, not just survive its rampage.

The upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth reportedly returns to a more familiar island setting, continuing the franchise’s preference for contained environments over full-blown city destruction. It also reportedly incorporates scenes and concepts from Crichton’s original Jurassic Park novel that were cut from earlier films, including the long-awaited raft sequence.

Still, Trevorrow is clearly proud of the groundwork he and his collaborators laid for the future of the franchise, across films, series, merchandise, and theme parks. The director shared:

As the Jurassic franchise continues to evolve, don’t expect a full pivot into kaiju territory anytime soon. According to Colin Trevorrow, the franchise’s greatest strength is its ability to stay grounded, even when the subject matter is 40 feet tall and covered in teeth.

The next franchise installment, Jurassic World Rebirth, lands in theaters on July 2 amid the 2025 movie schedule. You can also prepare for the film by streaming all six of its predecessors with a Peacock subscription.

It’s been 10 years since The Walt Disney Company gave George Lucas a few billion dollars and purchased his production company, along with Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and everything that else that came with it. When Disney took over, it began almost immediately to put together massive plans for a brand-new trilogy of Star Wars films, as well as numerous other movies that were going to expand the galaxy far, far away. 

We did, in fact, get the new Star Wars trilogy we were promised, as well as a couple standalone movies on top of that, but following Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the plans for Star Wars on the big screen started to go a little nuts. While production delays even hit the new trilogy, so they weren’t unexpected, delays in most cases turned into cancellations. While most of these movies were never even officially announced, there is evidence they were in development, until they were not. 

 A Boba Fett Movie 

In the beginning, in between the three movies comprising the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, we were supposed to get three films that were not directly tied into the Skywalker Saga, but worked to expand the Star Wars universe. Two of those movies actually happened. We got Rogue One and Solo following The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, respectively, but we were expecting a third film after the trilogy concluded, and that movie was supposed to be about Boba Fett.

Problems started early when the original director Josh Trank was reportedly dropped from the project. Perhaps if that hadn’t happened, the movie would have made it to screens, but it seems no future director could be found and this movie ended up languishing in development hell. Eventually, we got The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+, so in a way we did eventually get a Boba Fett story, but not in the way it was supposed to happen.

Solo Sequels

One of the reasons given for why we haven’t seen more Star Wars on the big screen is that one of the last movies that we did see, Solo: A Star Wars Story, struggled at the box office. To be fair, Solo struggled long before it arrived in theaters, but the movie certainly didn’t perform the way Lucasfilm was hoping, and the way we can tell that is that there were supposed to be sequels. 

When Alden Ehrenreich was cast to play Han Solo, he reportedly signed a deal for not one, but a trilogy of Star Wars movies. Needless to say we haven’t seen those projects, or even one that would allow Ehrenreich's Han Solo to even cameo. Under the circumstances, it’s not that surprising, but when you’re planning to make a couple more movies and then have to audible, you have to try and fill that with something else. 

A Mos Eisley Movie

We’ve seen a lot of the planet Tatooine in the various Star Wars series made for Disney+, but at one point, believe it or not, there was literally going to be a movie about the planet itself. More specifically, one about the “retched hive of scum and villainy” that was the Mos Eisley Cantina.  

This was yet another project that had been in development that was reportedly shelved by the poor performance of Solo. We were told that a lot of work had been done for a Star Wars spinoff movie on Tatooine before the project was quietly canceled. 

Benioff And Weiss' Star Wars Movies

While most of the Star Wars projects that we know about had at least basic ideas for plot and story, but didn’t necessarily have people actively producing them, one of the higher profile Star Wars movie ideas was the other way around. It was quite a big deal when the creators of HBO’s Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, signed on for at least one Star Wars film, if not several of them. It was even bigger deal when they left with those movies unmade.

We still don’t know what these movies would have been about, though Disney was confident enough at one point to officially announce this as the first post-Rise of Skywalker movie. We don’t even know if they knew what these movies were going to be about, though there were rumors of a Knights of the Old Republic connection. Reportedly the pair decided they didn’t want to deal with the potential problems of angry Star Wars fans, which makes sense since they learned what that was like following the final season of Game of Thrones. 

Obi-Wan Kenobi Movies 

One of the big questions even before the Sequel Trilogy was over was what Star Wars would do when we got there. One of the early rumors in that regard was that Lucasfilm was working on a new trilogy of films, which would be all about the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi in between the first two Star Wars trilogies. Ewan McGregor was asked about these rumors at every turn, but very little was ever confirmed.

In the end, we actually did get the Obi-Wan Kenobi story we were expecting, but we didn’t get it in the way we were expecting. While there absolutely were plans to make Obi-Wan movies, the project was eventually retooled into a Disney+ series. It was a generally well-regarded series, so it makes one wonder if it would have done well on the big screen.

Star Wars: Episode IX -  The Duel of the Fates 

The last one is a different sort of entry because, in the end, we did get Star Wars: Episode IX, but there’s no question now that the movie we got was very different from the movie originally planned. Colin Trevorrow was supposed to write and direct Episode IX, but his script was ultimately rejected by Lucasfilm, and Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams was brought in to direct an entirely new script. 

At least one version of Trevorrow’s script did eventually leak, allowing fans to learn how the end of the trilogy could have gone. It would have left the galaxy far, far, away in a very different place. We may have had an end to the Sequel Trilogy, but we didn’t get the one that was initially advertised. 

And these are just the movie that we know we’re never going to see. The fate of movie like Patty Jenkins Rogue Squadron, Rian Johnson’s trilogy, and a movie being produced by Marvel’s Kevin Feige are unknown. They have not been officially cancelled, and in the case of Rian Johnson, he has said his Star Wars movies are still very much alive. And other films are reportedly in active development, including one being helmed by Taika Waititi and another from Damon Lindelof that could be set post-Rise of Skywalker. 

We will undoubtedly see Star Wars on the big screen again, but what movie or movies we actually get, we may not know until opening night. For now, you can watch the Star Wars movies in order that have come out with your Disney+ subscription.

2022 saw the end of the Jurassic era arriving for everyone to behold. With Jurassic World Dominion making up part of the year’s new movie releases, co-writer/director Colin Trevorrow closed off almost 30 years of history in a grand fashion. Which makes the fact that he’s admitted ‘there probably should have only been one Jurassic Park all the more curious to dissect and experience. 

During an interview with Empire to promote the latest Jurassic World home entertainment release, Trevorrow made what could be seen as a pretty bold claim for someone that was part of building the latest round of sequels. However, it’s that belief that helped fuel his efforts as one of the architects to this trilogy of films, as Colin Trevorrow further explained through these thoughts: 

What you’ve just read mostly applies to Jurassic World Dominion, as that adventure was the first to break away entirely from returning to Isla Nublar. However, you can practically see those wheels turning throughout the first two installments of Colin Trevorrow’s cycle of films; especially in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s ending.

While he didn’t direct the middle installment, Trevorrow was still one of the film’s co-writers. So naturally, setting off a massive volcano that trashed the original Jurassic Park setting was a pretty big statement on where things were going to go. By the time Jurassic World Dominion brought back Colin Trevorrow, even greater tentpoles were driven into the ground to guide the way into the future. Only this time, as the man himself admits below, it’s not a setting that will dictate the potential Jurassic future:

In the finale to Jurassic World Dominion, the overarching legacy that started with Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic is wrapped up in some ways. Just as the world questioned whether releasing dinosaurs in the wild was an ethical decision, Colin Trevorrow and so many others will debate whether or not Jurassic Park should have seen any sequel action. 

In both cases, what matters is what’s been done with the potential aftermath. Each scenario proved that life found a way to make such gigantic choices worthwhile, with our reality seeing Trevorrow ready to mentor future Jurassic creators as a result.

The fate of the Jurassic franchise remains unknown. After the 2022 movie release Jurassic World Dominion tied up the modern trilogy, while also weaving in legacy characters along for the ride, things are in a pretty comfortable place for co-writer/director Colin Trevorrow. That’s not to say he hasn’t thought about the future of the canon, though, as Trevorrow has said that if he were to return to the Jurassic universe, he has a very specific role in mind. 

During the Jurassic World Dominion home entertainment junket recently held in Malta, you could say it was a celebration of all eras to the franchise. While the focus was more on the extended edition release of the latest film to carry the Jurassic name, it was inevitable to start speaking about what could come next. 

Speaking with Colin Trevorrow meant having the opportunity to ask him about his thoughts, and he explained the role he would want to play in the future of the franchise:

For better or worse, Colin Trevorrow’s time in the cockpit of Jurassic World seems to have come to a close. It’s an assumption that one probably could have made given how the events of Jurassic World Dominion play out. Still, in a market where franchise expansion sometimes keeps tried and tested hands on the wheel for as long as possible, it wouldn’t have been a surprise before today if Universal announced that Trevorrow was being asked to shape a new trilogy of stories. 

Instead, much as Steven Spielberg worked as an executive producer that helped shepherd Jurassic World into being, the next era could have yet another key advisor on its development team. 

As a fan of what Colin Trevorrow brought to Jurassic World through three films of creative control, I can’t blame the man for stepping back after Dominion’s ending set up an even larger world for a future Jurassic trilogy to explore. That said, the fact that he’d still come back to help a new filmmaker find their voice among the dinosaurs shows just how much he loves these movies and how good of an experience Jurassic World Dominion turned out to be. 

Trevorrow’s reasoning is even more admirable after having the blueprint laid out in his own words. Having a new filmmaker stepping in to tell their own story looks to be a new tradition that Jurassic World can establish. Even touching upon his intentions for Jurassic World Dominion’s story, and the criticism that it didn’t focus enough on the dinosaurs, Colin Trevorrow’s case for fresh blood was described thusly: 

Sitting with Colin Trevorrow and talking about Jurassic World Dominion, I could sense that this trilogy meant a lot to him, especially in the restoration of his true vision for the extended cut. Turning a series previously deemed un-franchisable into a wide open canvas of potential is no easy feat, and that potential almost always depends on fresh viewpoints to keep it in play.

Though I will miss the Trevorrow touch on Jurassic World, I can also say I’m eager to see what new stories and storytellers could be attracted to the table next time out. It’s all about change, and that very force brought the world Colin Trevorrow’s take on the Jurassic legacy. Not knowing what will happen next time is part of the fun, as the sun has literally set on this epoch of franchise history, setting the table for it to rise again whenever someone picks up the torch.

One of the deadliest places to be on a major motion picture has to be, without question, the editing room. Decisions are made in there that can majorly impact a movie, as we saw in the differences between the warring cuts of DC’s Justice League movie. To a lesser extent, a similar tale could be told about the 2022 movie release Jurassic World Dominion.

While there wasn’t any sort of strife similar to that previously mentioned example, co-writer/director Colin Trevorrow did have to “streamline” his summer blockbuster into a shorter theatrical cut. Decisions had to be made, as some moments would go missing or be rearranged in the previously released edit. However, when it came time for the home video release, an opportunity presented itself, and both Trevorrow and Universal got to treat the fans to another way to watch Jurassic World Dominion. 

Why Jurassic World Dominion’s Theatrical Cut Came To Be

I learned about the process that led to the theatrical cut of Jurassic World Dominion firsthand. Thanks to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, a massive event was held in Malta celebrating the home release of the studio’s huge summer hit. Colin Trevorrow was part of that experience, and more than ready to dig into the nuts and bolts of the theatrical cut’s formation. Starting with the story of how the cut came to be, Trevorrow revealed to CinemaBlend just how far the extended cut got before having to be trimmed down: 

One of those children that was initially sacrificed was, of course, Jurassic World Dominion’s original opening. While it would eventually be used as a marketing tool, released in IMAX theaters as “The Prologue” with last summer’s F9, the intended bookending that Dominion was supposed to achieve in its story was interrupted. 

Sadly, the “less than two and a half hours” mandate resulted in that theatrical cut becoming a necessity. To be fair, the reasons that Colin Trevorrow cited for that decision were pretty smart when it comes to the theatrical climate the film was released into.

Streamlining Jurassic World Dominion’s Theatrical Cut, And Why The Extended Edition Is Different From Most Alternates

Continuing his story about Jurassic World Dominion’s theatrical refinement, Trevorrow revealed another major factor when it came to what he would call a “streamlined experience.” Colin Trevorrow’s story of the road to the theatrical cut continued as follows: 

Normally when the words “director’s cut” come out to play, one can’t help but think of a movie like Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven or Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Much longer cuts of movies that were shrunk down in the name of theatrical exhibition, these “true visions” have sparked much debate with fans in the years since they’ve been released. However, it’s only 14 minutes worth of footage that’s been restored to Jurassic World Dominion. Thanks to the extended edition making its way through production as the cut for as long as it did, there was no real need for reshoots, touch ups or massive edits. 

As a result, Colin Trevorrow’s preferred version of Jurassic World Dominion is allowed to exist. Having seen the movie myself, it is absolutely the way to fly when experiencing the movie, as the moments restored help the movie breathe so much better. Diving more into why this experience is his chosen form for the film, Trevorrow invoked an absolutely fitting comedy classic: 

Sitting down with the man who’s been living with this world since 2015’s Jurassic World, you can’t help but feel Colin Trevorrow’s enthusiasm for Jurassic World Dominion. Honoring that crucial balance between current and legacy cast members was important to Trevorrow, co-writer Emily Carmichael and everyone else involved in Dominion’s production. The pride couldn’t have been more on display, which brings me to one final note that the director had shared about the existence of the extended cut.

Why Colin Trevorrow Feels Utter Gratitude That Jurassic World Dominion’s Extended Edition Exists

Time and again, alternate cuts have been rumored for many a movie during theatrical press cycles. Colin Trevorrow even got ahead of the matter pretty early, discussing how he was hoping this new version of Jurassic World Dominion would see the light of day. Now that the extended edition is out and ready for all audiences to discover it, Trevorrow couldn’t be happier, as seen in the following message of thanks: 

Jurassic World Dominion is one of those 2022 movies that divided fans and critics. So it only feels right to give the fans a little more of what they apparently enjoyed, as well as allow Colin Trevorrow to have his preferred vision in the wild. Though considering how much of a Jurassic franchise fan that Trevorrow happens to be, it’s a Venn diagram that overlaps to the tune of a richer, more enhanced experience for all species involved. 

If you’re ready to experience the final chapter of this blockbuster trilogy, Jurassic World Dominion is now available for purchase or rental in its theatrical and extended versions. Physical media enthusiasts can snap up the film on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD, while digital patrons can rent or buy the movie in that format as well. There are popular movie franchises, and then there’s Star Wars. George Lucas’ colorful space opera changed the film world forever, and countless moviegoers were raised on the galaxy far, far away. And while we’ve been treated to plenty of new content thanks to live-action shows on Disney+, the franchise is on a break from movies. But could Jurassic World’s Colin Trevorrow return to the Star Wars franchise? Here’s his honest take.

For those who were unaware, Colin Trevorrow was originally attached to direct Episode IX, which was titled Duel of Fates in his version. This is why J.A. Bayona helmed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom instead of him. Unfortunately he didn’t see eye to eye with the studio, and eventually departed that gig, calling it “traumatic.” But Trevorrow was recently asked by ComicBook about returning to Star Wars, where he got honest by saying:

Well, there you have it. It looks like Colin Trevorrow isn’t super excited about the prospect of returning to another movie franchise. Although he did clarify that it’s not necessarily an aversion to the sci-fi property, but because he just spent so long working within beloved franchises. As such, it seems he wants to create outside of that type of work.

Colin Trevorrow’s comments come as he’s promoting the home release of Jurassic World: Dominion. The recent threequel wrapped up the current trilogy of movies, and united the new heroes with the trio of original stars from Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. Given his years working on that and the ill-fated Duel of Fates script, Trevorrow has put years of work into already existing blockbuster properties. 

While Colin Trevorrow is seemingly disinterested in giving Star Wars another try as a filmmaker after his firing, it seems like there’s never been a better time for a filmmaker to step in with a bold vision for the galaxy far, far away. The Rise of Skywalker ended the nine-film main franchise, which should allow for more standalone movies that aren’t tied to the main story. Maybe Colin Trevorrow can be convinced after some time away from franchise work.

Wonder Woman filmmaker Patty Jenkins was originally going to be the first filmmaker to break ground via the Rogue Squadron movie, but it was put on hold due to creative differences. As such, Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie might get the honor, although there’s no real information about his vision. Clearly there’s been more of a focus on small screen projects like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Another Jurassic era has ended with Jurassic World Dominion, which remains a colossal hit among 2022’s movie releases. However, you haven’t seen all of what the movie has to offer. There is now an extended version of Dominion available to purchase, and director Colin Trevorrow has a clear stance on which version of the movie he prefers. 

The theatrical version of Jurassic World Dominion was 2 hours and 27 minutes long and became a global blockbuster despite audiences and critics disagreeing quite a bit on the quality of the film. A new post from Colin Trevorrow promoting the extended edition of his movie says it all:  

The Jurassic World Dominion director is much more into the newly-released extended edition than the version that played in theaters, obviously. In his tweet, he wrote “Friends don’t let friends watch the theatrical cut,” which almost sounds like he’s shading the theatrical version of his own movie. The extended version, which can now be purchased in stores and online, has an extra 14 minutes of Dominion, including “The Prologue” that Trevorrow admitted he was “heartbroken” to cut from the movie. 

Of course, you’d have to be a Jurassic Park mega fan to dig into 2 hours and 41 minutes of dino mayhem, but in many instances, longer versions of epic movies like this allows for more context and more of the director’s vision to be seen. While Trevorrow was likely asked to make Dominion under two hours and a half for its theatrical release, the extended version will hopefully enhance the experience of the Jurassic World Dominion ending. 

Along with the new home release including both the theatrical and extended versions of the latest Jurassic World movie, it will also have a short film directed by Colin Trevorrow called Battle At Big Rock, which takes place one year after the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Additionally, there’s a VFX featurette called “A New Breed of VFX” along with all kinds of interviews and behind the scenes with the cast and filmmakers and a look at the emotional final night of filming Dominion. 

Jurassic World Dominion is the third highest-grossing movie of 2022 worldwide behind Top Gun: Maverick, which recently unseated Titanic to become Paramount’s highest performing domestic release, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Dominion has made $974 million worldwide, which is lower than the other World movies, and yet a huge win again for the Universal franchise. 

With the extended edition, it looks like we’ll be able to experience more of Dominion as the director intended it with the 14 minutes extra now available on 4K, UHD, Blu-ray and Digital. Plus, in the comfort of our own homes, the popcorn is already bought and seats are already picked out for you. 

Spoilers ahead for Jurassic World: Dominion. 

Steven Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park movie changed the film world forever, partly thanks to the groundbreaking visual effects that debuted in the 1993 classic. The beloved movie starred Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern, who recently reunited for the new blockbuster Jurassic World: Dominion. And director Colin Trevorrow “never considered” killing off any of the franchise’s legacy characters for a very emotional reason.

Jurassic fans were delighted to see that the original heroes were going to be back on the big screen and facing dinosaur action in Jurassic World: Dominion. Colin Trevorrow assured fans early on that they’d have significant roles in the movie, which indeed turned out to be true. While some moviegoers were worried that Ian Malcolm, Ellie Sattler, or Alan Grant were going to be killed off, that was never in the cards for Trevorrow. He recently explained his approach while appearing on our very own ReelBlend podcast, saying:

Well, there you have it. While BD Wong’s Dr. Henry Wu might have been a villain in the last two Jurassic World movies, he was still safe from being killed off throughout the course of Dominion’s 146-minute runtime. As were the heroes played by the likes of Laura Dern, Jeff Goldlblum, and Sam Neill. In fact, the only original character to bite the dust in the movie was Lewis Dodgson. 

But exactly why did Colin Trevorrow make this decision for (most) of the Jurassic Park OG’s? Other franchises like Scream and Star Wars have promptly killed off legacy characters upon their return to the big screen. It turns it out it was a very emotional decision, as Trevorrow shared with the hosts of ReelBlend,

I’m not crying, you’re crying. While the Jurassic franchise is known for dealing with out of this world circumstances, it’s still made by people. And Colin Trevorrow thought that killing off the beloved original characters in Dominion would leave the audience with sobering thoughts about mortality and aging. Instead, Trevorrow let the original trio and BD Wong’s Dr. Wu survive the threequel with all of their limbs.

Jurassic World: Dominion ended the current story, so it’s unclear how long it’ll take the property to return to theaters. This is especially true since the reviews for Colin Trevorrow’s threequel have been less than positive.

Growing up as a Jurassic Park fan, I was always intrigued to see what each upcoming movie would bring. As author Michael Crichton’s world grew with cinematic sequel upon sequel, I always arrived at the theater with an open mind, no matter what came before. So it felt kind of weird that by time 2015’s Jurassic World kicked off its respective trilogy, the events of The Lost World: Jurassic Park seemed to have never happened. Going into Jurassic World Dominion, I wondered if the 1997 movie was still considered canon, despite no explicit references to the film’s third act climax; which saw a Tyrannosaurus Rex rampaging through San Diego. Well, now we have some answers.

When I sat down with Jurassic World Dominion co-writer Emily Carmichael and co-writer/director Colin Trevorrow during the film’s press day, it was time to ask the question outright. Were the events of the second outing still included in the historical torch that Jurassic World picked up upon its release? Here’s what Carmichael and Trevorrow told CinemaBlend: 

Emily Carmichael: Oh yeah! It’s canon, yeah. We didn’t decanonize anything.

Colin Trevorrow: You saw at the end the two dinosaurs from The Lost World, two T-Rexes, are there at Biosyn. That’s the two green T-Rexes. Yeah [Roberta] finally, they meet up, and she has a family. You should see it again, it’s all in there.

Decanonizing The Lost World: Jurassic Park probably wouldn’t have made too many people mad. With even its director Steven Spielberg considering the film inferior to its predecessor, the only Michael Crichton-sourced sequel has its fair share of detractors. By and large, the Jurassic universe really doesn’t make a mention of a huge dinosaur attack decades before 2018’s Fallen Kingdom unleashed a whole lot more into the world. 

Sure enough, during the final stretch, when news reports are discussing the fate of the dinosaur sanctuary that was being run/exploited by BioSyn, Roberta the Tyrannosaurus Rex from Jurassic Park meets up with the buck and doe Tyrannosauruses from The Lost World. It looks like some roars are exchanged and, given that this is a “family” moment, this might be another step towards the hypothetical Fast Saga crossover pitched last year.

That’s not the only reference that’s meant to tie the legacy trilogy even closer together with Jurassic World Dominion’s storyline, either. Another quick “blink and you’ll miss it” moment comes when BioSyn representative Ramsay Cole (Mamoudou Athie) tells Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) about the dinosaurs that are being housed in this Italian mountain stronghold. Colin Trevorrow further highlighted that in our conversation, singling out the following piece of dialogue:

Indeed according to Ramsay’s spiel, Isla Nublar and Isla Sorna are mentioned as providing the first waves of dinosaurs in Jurassic World Dominion’s new cinematic playground. Though it should be noted that, as the truly resilient creature she is, Roberta the Tyrannosaurus from Jurassic Park took three years to catch. That’s her you see being loaded on a plane in Pennsylvania, and her capture probably wasn’t too long after the events of last year’s IMAX prologue for Dominion.

Anyone who’s worried about where Jurassic Park III sits in the canon of the Jurassic World franchise has obviously breathed a sigh of relief. During the huge reunion between Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler, Alan asks about Mark (Taylor Nichols), the husband we saw her with in Joe Johnston’s 2001 threequel. 

Somberly, Elie admits that “it’s over,” as she's currently a free spirit with two kids in college. Of course, that freedom is tinged by the fact that a man-made ecological apocalypse is bearing down on the entire Earth; but that’s a story for another time. 

Leaving no stone unturned, Emily Carmichael and Colin Trevorrow put together a legacy-quel that officially ties up both trilogies into one, neat package. Then again, the Spinosaurus from Isla Sorna better hope it’s not alive. Now that The Lost World: Jurassic Park is considered canon, that means there should have been three T-Rexes that came over from that island. Which means that the baby that Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) and Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore) rescued from San Diego was probably the Rex that was killed in Jurassic Park III. This is starting to sound like a Fast Saga sequel in the works, isn’t it?

As it stands, Universal Pictures' Jurassic World Dominion is the “conclusion of the Jurassic era,” but it’s not the end of the franchise. You can currently see the film in a theater near you, as it comes off this weekend’s massive box office haul. Any HBO Max subscribers looking to revisit those first three legacy entries from the Jurassic Park franchise can do so as, at the time of this writing, that’s the platform that contains all of the classic dinosaur action.

And just like that, the Jurassic World trilogy is over. Within the past seven years, dinosaurs have ruled the box office and our pop culture as the famed franchise returned to big screens nearly 15 years after we last visited Isla Nublar and the prehistoric creatures crossing paths with the modern world in the Jurassic Park movies. Jurassic World Dominion capped off the most recent Jurassic era, bringing together both Park and World characters, along with introducing a couple new faces. Surprisingly, DeWanda Wise’s Kayla was the biggest scene-stealer in this new movie, and the thread that I’m most interested to follow next. 

The idea that I came out of Jurassic World Dominion thinking most about DeWanda Wise’s debut in the franchise is actually wild because this is a movie that stuffs together Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard’s characters from the previous two movies and the original trio from the first Jurassic Park movie. While I did enjoy the Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and Sam Neill stuff, it did feel as if the characters this trilogy most belonged to were not as interesting as they used to be. With that imbalance in mind (and critics have a lot to say about Dominion's shortcomings), Wise’s presence was a breath of fresh air. Let’s get into it more. 

Who Is DeWanda Wise’s Jurassic World Character?

First, here’s what Jurassic World Dominion established for Kayla Watts. DeWanda Wise’s new character is a contract pilot who is working for Biosyn, the movie’s villainous genetic company. During Dominion, we learn that Kayla used to be in the Air Force, but dropped out for some unknown reason. After leaving, she went into the business of taking illegal cargo in and out of Mombasa, and later crossed paths with Biosyn and started working for them in transporting high-ticket items and prehistoric animals for the company under the table.

After seeing young clone Maisie, previously introduced in Fallen Kingdom, being transported through Biosyn, Kayla feels guilty and decides to help Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt’s Owen and Claire in retrieving her from Biosyn. She flys them to Biosyn, where they end up crashing due to a flock of Quetzalcoatlus dinos attacking them. Following the crash, Kayla teams up with Owen to get past some more dinos, and later in the film she's part of the entire ensemble teaming up for the final act. 

Why Kayla Is The Best Character Of The Jurassic World Trilogy

DeWanda Wise's Kayla oozes cool and an Indiana Jones-like feel in Jurassic World Dominion that the movie wouldn’t otherwise have had. DeWanda Wise brings a genuineness to the character that sticks out where other characters fade into the background because they are cruising through their archetypes and have perhaps tired out their charm over the three films. By the end of the Jurassic World trilogy, it feels as though the filmmakers were uninspired by the storyline between Owen and Claire. Instead of evolving in an especially interesting way, their characters were the concerned pseudo-parents of Maisie who happen to know about dinosaurs.   

Kayla is the best Jurassic World character because she truly encompasses what the trilogy as a whole is trying to say. As the movie ends, it sends a blatant message about the importance of coexisting in an evolving world. Within Kayla’s introduction, she is going through the motions to survive for herself, but once she notices something awry with Biosyn, she feels guilty and decides to risk her life and job to help strangers. Kayla is the example of the message of our need to find ways to live in harmony, even at times when it doesn’t make sense to or it's easier to be divided by differences. 

What Colin Trevorrow Has Said About Kayla’s Future In Jurassic World 

It’s not only me who is into Kayla Watts and wants to see more of her. When CinemaBlend’s own Mike Reyes spoke to Dominion’s writers Emily Carmichael and Colin Trevorrow, Kayla was the main subject of conversation when he asked about the future of the franchise. In their words: 

Emily Carmichael: "So much is gonna happen. The world is so rich. There's gonna be a Kayla Watts/Zia spinoff movie. I mean, this is just, literally I'm pitching this to you right now. This is the first the world is hearing about it."

Colin Trevorrow: "Not official, but I support it. And actually, I don't know if Kayla Watts is a spinoff. I think she's the main line."

Kayla was already on their minds when thinking about Dominion, and this is absolutely the correct answer. It seems like it may have even been intentional to build out Kayla as new blood just as this trilogy finishes off its storylines for the characters we already know and love. 

How Kayla Should Return Following Dominion

Following Dominion, the Jurassic World franchise, should it return in the near future, needs a shake-up, and Kayla Watts could send it into the future with her unique character. I imagine the next Jurassic era remains in a world where dinosaurs and humans continue to coexist, and Kayla decides to take a larger part in the protection of the planet. Since Kayla gives serious Indy vibes, I imagine the next movie would be another big action story, and it could easily follow the cargo pilot on an exciting globe-trotting expedition, perhaps into the genetics black market that the movie somewhat established. 

Perhaps Dichen Lachman’s Soyona Santos has found a way to keep her business going without Biosyn, and after working with the company for some time, she’d be the right person to take them down. Perhaps some kind of underground breeding of dinosaurs is messing with the ecosystem, and it becomes up to Kayla to quietly figure out where the belly of the operation is. 

We’ll have to wait and see how Jurassic World Dominion does in theaters following Top Gun: Maverick’s massive numbers before Universal gets talking about what could be next. Until then, you can check out what other upcoming 2022 movies are worth a see on the big screen. 

For a moment in time, the then-unnamed Star Wars: Episode IX was under the creative influence of intended co-writer/director Colin Trevorrow. As a previous candidate for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it felt like a moment that was fated to happen. Of course, Trevorrow’s high profile parting of the ways made way for The Rise of Skywalker to come into existence. 

It may have been a heartbreaking experience, but it was one that ultimately served Colin Trevorrow’s return for Jurassic World Dominion rather well. Speaking with the director, along with his co-writer Emily Carmichael, on the press day for the latest Jurassic film yielded interesting stories about how Dominion ultimately came together. 

As Trevorrow spoke with CinemaBlend, the story of how his Star Wars experience influenced his return to the Jurassic World franchise unfolded. One key component working on both of these fan-favorite franchises was how to handle the balance of legacy characters alongside their newer counterparts. Colin Trevorrow laid out the importance of that factor as follows: 

Colin Trevorrow was adamant about balancing Jurassic Park’s legacy cast in the total calculus that is Jurassic World Dominion’s legacy-quel ecosystem. Sometimes that sounds easier said than done, but life found a way to make Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler and Ian Malcolm just as important as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing. 

Trevorrow’s “traumatic” departure from Star Wars: Episode IX didn’t only teach him a lesson in balancing the old kids and the new; it also showed him an example of old fashioned loyalty. Colin Trevorrow further explained during our Jurassic World Dominion interview that when he made the jump between franchises, some key personnel came along for the ride. Production designer Kevin Jenkins, as well as the “entire art crew” that were part of Episode IX, migrated into Jurassic World’s big summer showstopper. 

Hindsight is 20/20, and Colin Trevorrow may have gained a massive lesson when observing the intense fan reactions to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. In a movie that included a death fake-out involving Chewbacca, a hotly debated conclusion to the story of the late Carrie Fisher’s General Leia Organa, and the alleged sidelining of Rose Tico, a learning experience was waiting to happen. 

The adventure that Alan, Ellie, and Ian set out on is just as important as Owen and Claire’s continued efforts of Jurassic preservation. Thankfully, there’s only one fake-out involving death, but it’s used at the right moment. As both Colin Trevorrow and Emily Carmichael explained towards the end of this portion of the Jurassic World: Dominion conversation, the lessons mentioned above were very much in mind when crafting this film. 

"Colin Trevorrow: So when it came to this moment, it gets back to the question of, ‘Are we gonna kill Ian Malcolm or not?’, we really wanted everyone to leave this movie feeling really good, and hopeful. We’re in a difficult time, we’re in a challenging moment when everyone’s a little scared. To be able to make a movie that assures everyone, ‘Actually, the people you love are going to be alright. The dinosaurs you love are safe. And maybe there’s a way out of this if we do it together.

Emily Carmichael: But, of course, we can’t land it if we don’t earn it. Without putting them in that danger, their safety doesn’t feel real, and it doesn’t feel earned."

Learning from both good times and bad is key in any part of life. Colin Trevorrow only further proves that lesson's importance with the effort he put into his part of the Jurassic World Dominion experience. No matter the perception on the film itself, at the very least, the work speaks for itself. Jurassic fans will get to see that work for themselves really soon, as the moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived. 

Jurassic World Dominion is set to open in early showings tonight following several international debuts. Dinosaurs and humans alike will fight for survival, just as the film will fight savage Jurassic critical reactions and Top Gun: Maverick to dominate this weekend. The Force may not be with him, but let's hope that Colin Trevorrow has found a way to make this film into a prehistoric success. 

The long-awaited third installment of the Jurassic World trilogy is finally upon us, with Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) teaming up with the original Jurassic Park trio for a globe-trotting adventure. Jurassic World Dominion brings back Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler and Ian Malcolm (Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, respectively) to a world where dinosaurs live among humans. Life finds a way, right? Critics have screened this legacyquel, and their reviews are in to tell us what to expect when the two Jurassic trilogies collide.

Audiences’ first reactions to Jurassic World Dominion’s screening were pretty harsh, with criticisms of the Colin Trevorrow project including lack of character development and being overall pointless (even without the inclusion of hybrid dinosaurs). Now the critics’ reviews are out to give us more context to those thoughts. Let’s check out what we can expect from this sequel when it hits theaters on June 10, starting with CinemaBlend’s review of Jurassic World Dominion. Eric Eisenberg rates the movie a paltry 1.5 stars out of 5, calling the plotlines bland and disconnected with a script that has no idea what to do with the legacy characters: 

Alonso Duralde of The Wrap says just like in the movies, grafting two DNAs together proves to be a bad idea, and adding the stars of Jurassic Park into the Jurassic World trilogy only serves to highlight how uninteresting the more recent characters are: 

Pete Hammond of Deadline, however, says there is fun to be found in the new sequel, if you can buy into the premise. This review says the visual effects and overall production are, as expected, first-rate, and the movie is quite an allegory for humans losing their grasp on what’s happening to our planet: 

Sarah Musnicky of Nightmarish Conjurings says the movie has a fanfic vibe and loses focus pretty quickly. The addition of Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum only proves how lacking in heart and humanity this series has been, the review says: 

Matt Singer of ScreenCrush rates the movie 3 out of 10, saying that not only does Jurassic World Dominion not answer its predecessor’s question about how humans and dinosaurs could co-exist, it doesn’t even try. It’s fun to see the Jurassic Park actors back together again, but their presence doesn’t really make much sense in the movie. In the end, this review says it’s just more of the same: 

Even with its criticisms, Jurassic World Dominion is sure to be a box office win. What drives the popularity of the Jurassic Park franchise is obvious. The characters are cool, and there is strong thematic messaging about the arrogance of mankind, but the big draw will forever be the dinosaurs. The jaw-dropping wizardry in Steven Spielberg’s original film from 1993 brought the prehistoric creatures to life in a way that audiences had never seen before, and moviegoers have been chasing that extreme high in the sequels ever since.

In that sense (one of many), Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World Dominion is an extreme low point. Gone is the awe and wonder from the moment where Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) see a herd of brachiosauruses for the first time. In the sixth chapter of the series, dinosaurs are little more than living guns and window dressing.

This is a flabbergasting development when one considers that this franchise has gotten to the point where dinosaurs have become a part of ecosystems around the globe, and you wonder why the filmmakers couldn’t develop a story about that world-changing development. And while that’s bad, the actual execution is even worse. Orchestrating two bland, wholly disconnected plotlines, Jurassic World Dominion reduces all of its legacy characters into blank sheets of paper walking through plot developments, resulting in a slog of a film with only a light scattering of memorable moments in its bloated two-and-a-half hour runtime.

The first of these plotlines follows up the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and finds Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) having taken on the responsibility of being the guardians for Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon), the young girl who we learned was a clone in the previous film. Together they have made a home deep in the woods of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, trying to keep Maisie safe from those who would like to take and study her – but this plan fails as a group of poachers discover her location and kidnap her (oh, and they also take the baby of Owen’s “pet” velociraptor Blue, but that development is ultimately given so little attention it might as well not exist).

Simultaneously in another part of the country, Ellie Sattler begins an investigation into swarms of giant locusts that are devastating crops – but curiously not those on farms that are grown using seeds made by the pharmaceutical conglomerate Biosyn. Theorizing that the insects are genetically modified using extinct DNA from the Cretaceous era, she enlists the help of her old friend Alan Grant, and the two of them make plans to go see Ian Malcolm, who has taken a job at the massive corporation.

By complete and total coincidence, all of the principal characters end up heading to the same location at the same time, creating a hollow meet-up of stars from different generations of the franchise that fails in any way to capitalize on or develop the personalities of the characters.

Jurassic World: Dominion has little to no idea what to do with its impressive lineup of established characters.

Like Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World, Jurassic World Dominion features a constant stream of nods to fans and Easter eggs that suggest that there is a genuine love for this franchise behind the camera, but it’s bizarrely never demonstrated in the actual storytelling. The arc for Owen and Claire never gets more advanced than “they’re parents now, and they want their kidnapped daughter back,” and it all but ignores their past with dinosaurs – the exceptions being an opening sequence where Claire liberates some of these creatures from an illegal breeder, and moments where Owen tries to calm a threat by holding out his palm (which eventually just feels laughably goofy).

The worse sin, however, is treating the “legacy” characters like they’ve spent the last 20 odd years of their lives treading water. The only meaningful development highlighted in the lives of Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler, and Ian Malcolm is the revelation that Ellie has gotten divorced (her marriage previously revealed in Joe Johnston’s Jurassic Park III), and that’s clearly only included to clear the runway for a romantic pairing fans have been wanting to see develop for the last three decades (and the conclusion is just as hollow as the setup). It feels like the filmmakers were afraid that audiences wouldn’t recognize the three protagonists if they weren’t exactly how they were in Jurassic Park, and it’s hard not to feel shortchanged by their big reunion.

Without meaningful character development or interesting plotting, Jurassic World: Dominion is a two-and-a-half hour-long slog.

Because the distinct plots are so disparate and vague, Jurassic World Dominion feels like two poorly constructed movies in one, and it just bounces back and forth between them. The inclusion of various action set pieces motivates the direction of the film far more than any complex revelations or compelling twists (of which this blockbuster has exactly zero). The action figures just slowly move from scene to scene until the third act when all of the action figures can come together… and not really do much at all.

There are thrilling moments, including the introduction of the crazy locust swarm and a sequence where Claire has to hide in a bog from a hungry carnivore, but otherwise, all action and emotion is mutually exclusive. At one point in the first act, Ellie pets a baby triceratops and comments, “You never get used to it” – but Jurassic World Dominion sure does try its hardest to try and suck all of the awe and wonder out of the exercise with laser-guided dinosaurs and giant carnivore battles that continue to play out meaninglessly even after all of the human characters are long gone from the scene.

The blockbuster model for Jurassic World Dominion is very clearly Avengers: Endgame – a capstone project that is intended to reflect cohesiveness in the continuity – but it fails in so many ways where the Marvel film succeeds. Rather than constructing a story that effectively captures the full scope of the franchise and takes advantage of the principal characters’ beloved qualities, we instead get two high-concept ideas that are mashed together in a structure-less mess with bad pacing and boring action. The only silver lining is that it is all but guaranteed to be a massive hit, so perhaps one day we’ll actually get the movie about the global proliferation of dinosaurs that this feature was supposed to be.

Just two weeks ago, Chris Pratt and wife Katherine Schwarzenegger welcomed their second child together, Eloise Christina. Considering the happy couple had their new daughter just ahead of Jurassic World: Dominion finally hitting theaters, Pratt understandably couldn’t juggle being both a movie star and dad in the past few weeks. Even so, the actor found a way to bypass that -- and it involved photoshop.

Chris Pratt took to Instagram to share Jurassic World premiere photos featuring Dominion castmates Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, DeWanda Wise, Mamoudou Athie and writer/director Colin Trevorrow. Given that he couldn't be there, it makes sense that he would hilariously photoshop himself into the photos. Check them out: 

The star put together a fun set of photos featuring him in funny locations. In the first image, the actor is in the mouth of a T-Rex and, in the second one, he's on the top of a bus with the cast, with Goldblum seemingly looking straight back at him. In the third photo, he can be seen on the right holding a t-shirt that declares that he hearts raptors. The fourth one has the Owen Grady actor making a funny face behind Goldblum alongside fans. 

Ahead of the release of Dominion, the cast has traveled to Mexico, the United Kingdom and Germany for various premieres for the movie. As Chris Pratt shared on the social media platform, “daddy duty” kept him home. He joked that fan-favorite raptor Blue wouldn’t have been the best babysitter since it’s “kinda hard to change the diaper with those claws.” Yeah, makes sense. 

Of course, the Guardians of the Galaxy lead had the best reason to miss Jurassic World premieres. The actor wouldn’t want to miss Eloise’s first moments on the planet and leave his wife of nearly three years to fend for herself. The couple are also parents to Lyla Schwarzenegger Pratt, who was born in August 2020, making her nearly two years old now. (And both stars have done a commendable job of maintaining the little one's privacy.)

Even so, Chris Pratt was likely a bit bummed to miss the events, especially since the movie is said to be the “conclusion of the Jurassic era.” While Pratt doesn’t think Dominion will end the franchise forever, the flick, one of 2022's biggest upcoming movies does mark the end of the Jurassic World phase that started in 2015. 

Dominion follows the events of 2018’s Fallen Kingdom, where the dinosaurs are unleashed outside of Isla Nublar and throughout Earth. Chris Pratt’s Owen and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire will be attempting to live in this new world where people must coexist with the prehistoric creatures. The two also become pseudo-parents to Isabella Sermon’s Maisie Lockwood. Amidst this, the original trio consisting of Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill and Laura Dern will reunite, and the franchise will introduce new characters played DeWanda Wise and Mamoudou Athie.

Everything in the Jurassic Park trilogy was a build-up to the hybrid dinosaurs unleashed in Isla Nublar and eventually, the world. 2015’s Jurassic World brought audiences the genetically modified Indominus Rex with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom introducing the Indominus-velociraptor hybrid Indoraptor. After sitting out the sequel, director Colin Trevorrow teased his return wouldn’t have any hybrid dinos in Jurassic World: Dominion. Now the Dominion director has broken down why the threequel doesn’t include any new ones this go-around.

Signing up to helm the final installment was a reset of sorts for the director and the dinosaur-centric franchise. So much of the first two films were built around the controversial efforts to combine dino DNA to create these super voracious species. Unfortunately, audiences saw the disastrous results of these efforts with Isla Nublar’s destruction. Unleashing dinosaurs onto the world was a key factor in Trevorrow’s conclusion as he spilled to SFX Magazine (via CBR):

Colin Trevorrow’s reasoning made sense given the first sequel’s game-changing finale. Dealing with real dinosaurs just casually roaming the Earth doesn’t leave room for creating new hybrid dinos in a lab. According to the Book of Henry director, their absence worked out for the final film. The filmmaker revealed losing the hybrids was beneficial to helping the characters deal with their new circumstances.

So, the threequel will see this longstanding battle over the dinosaurs spanning two trilogies finally come to a head. While every story expands the Jurassic universe, figuring out what’s best for the species has been a common thread without a plausible solution. Now, it seems things will come to a resolution in the film series’ finale. Of course, the franchise’s future is still up in the air as Jurassic World star Chris Pratt hinted at its possible continuation despite Dominion being billed as the final film.

This wasn’t the first time Trevorrow has said no to hybrid dinos in the final installment. He mentioned the film would include no hybrids as it was going back to basics. The director wanted true dinosaurs to be the stars of the threequel. Reuniting OG Jurassic stars Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neill for the threequel made that goal clear. From what viewers saw in the action-packed trailer, things are direr in the finale for all parties.

Jurassic World: Dominion will wrap up the second trilogy when it debuts in theaters on June 10. Being a fan of a massive franchise like Jurassic Park could inspire fans to do tons of things; even if it’s just to show up when the next sequel takes its place as part of the 2022 movie releases heading to theaters. As Jurassic World: Dominion continues to march towards its cinematic debut, that anticipation has actually inspired some industrious dinosaur devotees to create a fan video. The results are so impressive that director Colin Trevorrorow had to share it with the rest of the world, along with his stamp of approval.

It all started with a random “news report” on Twitter, courtesy of a profile named “News Update TONIGHT.” Don’t worry about the profile looking too similar to legit news outlets, as there’s a firm emphasis on Jurassic World’s influence. After finding this video, and proclaiming that it ruled, Trevorrow then shared the video as seen below: 

After the end of Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom, an increasing number of dinosaur sightings begin to plague the continental United States. Officially, we’ve seen this story play out in shorts like Battle at Big Rock, as well as the prologue that was released to the internet a couple of months ago. While those were wider scaled events of destruction, the fan video written by Tim Cianfano and Anthony Feliciano (who also serve as director and producer, respectively) takes a more intimate scaled approach; and with not as many casualties. 

Instead of a stomping Tyrannosaurus freaking out at a drive in, this Jurassic World inspired short has some more everyday annoyances to show us. The new world triggered by the events at the Lockwood Estate have now given us a Triceratops blocking someone’s truck in the driveway and even an adorable Pachycephalosaurus peeking in on someone’s video doorbell. Though there are some carnivores in the mix, with what looks like a Carnotaurus preparing to eat an unfortunate farmer’s cattle. And it sounds like the T-Rex does show up at the end, just not in a full body shot. 

Humanity is lucky that Jurassic World: Dominion doesn’t seem to be letting the Giganotosaurus run loose in the general population. As Colin Trevorrow likens that dinosaur to the Joker, it sounds like something so terrifying that it’d have to be kept on its own island, just for safety. Who’d have thought we’d reach the day when criminally insane dinosaurs were possible?

Jurassic World: Dominion’s impressive cast and very special release date honor the legacy of Jurassic Park in a way that fans can appreciate. With fanmade creations like the one above grabbing the attention of Colin Trevorrow, who knows what sort of inspirations could be drawn for the official fate of the franchise? Before Chris Pratt became the lead of the Jurassic World trilogy, Josh Brolin was considered for Owen Grady, with 2013 reports claiming he was in “early talks” for the role prior. Ahead of the dinosaur blockbusters wrapping up this summer with the release of Jurassic World: Dominion, Brolin is getting honest about why he's "very happy" that he stepped away from the big opportunity.

When he received the opportunity for the Colin Trevorrow-directed dino adventure, Josh Brolin soon to a realization. In his words:

If you can remember, prior to Guardians of the Galaxy, Chris Pratt was best known for his role in Parks and Recreation. For the Marvel flick, he lost 60 pounds and transformed into the action star he is today. Following the insane success of Marvel Studios' sci-fi franchise, Pratt continued an incredible streak with Jurassic World, which became a huge hit as well. 

As Josh Brolin shared, he was just as amazed as the rest of us about what Pratt did with Guardians of the Galaxy, and he was excited to see the actor take on the role of Owen Grady and do a “much better job” than him. While some are probably curious as to how Brolin would have been in the role, it sounds like the actor has no regrets about having the movie franchise pass him by. 

In the same interview, the Oscar nominee did show some wistfulness about losing out to Ben Affleck when it came to Zack Snyder's Batman. The actor said the role was “interesting” to him and the decision came down to Snyder rather than him turning it down. Even though he was not part of these two massive films, he did get to play Marvel’s biggest villain yet in Thanos (who may or may not be returning). The actor also got to play Cable in Deadpool 2 and Gurney Halleck in the Dune movies. (Yes, he’s still bummed about Denis Villeneuve’s Oscar snub like the rest of us). So all in all, I'd say Josh Brolin has done quite well without a Jurassic role.

Not much about the actual contents of Jurassic World: Dominion has been revealed, but the stakes going into the blockbuster have seemingly never been higher. The ending of Fallen Kingdom saw the resurrected dinosaurs being released on the mainland, which is sure to chaos all sorts of chaos. Many of the prominent/most badass dinosaurs in the Jurassic franchise can be compared to other famed antagonists of cinematic history. Roberta the T-Rex from Jurassic Park basically enjoys the same heel to hero arc that The Terminator’s T-800 did, and in the space of one movie. Not to mention the first two Jurassic World films also sport dino danger that echos famed psychopaths and anti-heroes. Co-writer/director Colin Trevorrow has promised that tradition will continue in the upcoming movie Jurassic World: Dominion, as he’s compared the Giganotosaurus to one of Batman’s most iconic villains.

I’m absolutely into this comparison too, as Trevorrow claims that this new villain of genetic engineering is like the Joker himself. Giving this apt comparison in a recent interview with Empire, this creature that’s also known as “the Giga” has been given a pretty specific viewpoint on the world. According to Colin Trevorrow, this is what we should expect: 

If you’ll all allow me a moment, I’m going to go have a slight panic attack. As suggested above, the pure unhinged menace of the Joker, specifically Heath Ledger’s variant from The Dark Knight, is now going to be allowed to roam a portion of the earth once again. Only this time, it’s in a body that is very tall, weighs a couple tons, and only knows concepts like “angry” and “food.” Well isn’t that just fantastic. 

Actually, it really is. After Jurassic World gave us a Hannibal Lecter-esque intelligence with the Indominous Rex, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s brutal Indoraptor possessed shades of Frankenstein’s Monster, this is a hell of a step forward in terms of dinosaur threats. Plus, if you remember the trailer for Jurassic World: Dominion, that claim of wanting to “watch the world burn” is more appropriate than ever.

Towards the end of that first look at footage from the sixth film to bear the Jurassic name, we see the main cast of Jurassic World: Dominion facing down a massive, shadowy threat. With trees burning in what we now know to be named BioSyn Valley, the Giganotosaurus stalks towards our frightened heroes, menacing all it stands before. Looks like one of my burning questions about Jurassic World 3’s story has been answered, and this is moment is not set on Isla Sorna.

It’s even more intimidating when you take into account that this isn’t a lab created hybrid, holding true to the promise that Jurassic World: Dominion wouldn’t feature such a creature. While director J.A. Bayona claimed that Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom wasn’t a monster movie, Colin Trevorrow seems to have the total opposite in mind, at least when it comes to the Giganotosaurus in particular. With all of this in mind, let’s get a little more hyped about this horrific menace, thanks to re-watching the Jurassic World: Dominion trailer:

Ready for a big dino summer? Jurassic World Dominion looks like it's coming in hot this June, and the franchise is bringing back some old friends in the form of Jeff Goldblum’s Dr. Ian Malcolm, Sam Neill’s Dr. Alan Grant and Laura Dern’s Dr. Ellie Sattler. The trio are, of course, the first characters we adventured with in the original Jurassic Park. Now that the Dominion trailer debuted the three back into the mix, I want to talk about the moments I have on my wishlist for their return. 

As we already know, the original Jurassic Park trio will be “such big characters” in Jurassic World Dominion. Director Colin Trevorrow told us this last summer, and the trailer seriously suggested this as well. Now that I anticipate a sizable reunion with dinosaurs running rampant around the world, here’s what I want to see: 

A Quippy, Yet Emotional Reunion Between The Trio

Jurassic World bringing back its original characters comes following a lot of other franchises doing so. Star Wars and Spider-Man are great examples (in my opinion) of fan service colliding with great storytelling, and I hope Dominion does so when it brings back Malcolm, Grant and Sattler. We’ll always remember the moment when Han Solo and Chewbacca wandered in the Millennium Falcon, or when Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire wandered in those portals in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Both moments go to show that movies have the ability to catch us off guard and truly awe us with these reunions (even when we know they’re going to happen). 

From the Dominion trailer, it looks like Malcolm, Grant and Sattler catch wind of the world’s big dino problem and get in contact with one another before coming together with Chris Pratt's Owen and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire to save our collective skins. Here's hoping that the moment when all three of the OG actors come together again is written in a way that has catching butterflies and chills down our spines all at once. 

The Trio Reminiscing On Their Jurassic Park Misadventures With New Cast

In addition to Dominion needing to have a solid reunion moment, I’d also like to see a few clever callbacks to the first time these three were together in Jurassic Park. Obviously this one is going to happen somehow in some way, but hopefully it happens in a way that ties in seamlessly with how they’ll work together with the new cast in the Jurassic World movie. I’d love to see one of the trio pulling one of the moves they did in the original movie on these dinos as they take over the world. 

Jurassic World Dominion is set to be the last movie in the main Jurassic franchise, so having a full circle moment where one or all the first Jurassic Park actors does something key to saving the planet would really warm my heart. This is especially since 1993’s Jurassic Park is not only a classic, but for many people, one of their favorite movies of all time. 

Dr. Alan Grant Back In On The Dino Action 

Look, I know Chris Pratt is the big action star on the block in the Jurassic World movies, but I will need more from Sam Neill’s Dr. Alan Grant than what we saw in the trailer. There’s an interesting moment in the first look where both Alan and Owen both say “Don’t move” at the same time, and while it’s funny, I’m also hoping we get a legitimate arc from Grant in Dominion. 

Jumping off the previous point, I don’t want the original cast to simply play the role of “jurassic consultants.” I want them to be a major part in the action, and since Grant was specifically was the first hero of the Jurassic movies, he deserves a big role in this Jurassic World installment. 

Dr. Ian Malcolm Reclaiming His Sex Symbol Status

Like many, I was disappointed to see the minor and rather boring role Jeff Goldblum was given in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Thankfully, the character will return in Dominion, and the actor better go full Goldblum with the same kind of sex appeal his younger self offered us up in 1993 when flashed his pecks our way. In late 2020 (while filming), the actor recreated the infamous scene to entice his fans to vote during the presidential election, but it has yet to be seen what Dr. Ian Malcolm is like these days. 

Jeff Goldblum remains a sex symbol in our hearts, but Jurassic World Dominion is the perfect place for the actor to reclaim his status on film with what’s to come with his character. Hopefully Malcolm truly goes for it as a silver fox because it’s a major part of the charm in 1993’s Jurassic Park. 

Alan And Ellie Falling Back In Love Obviously

Finally, it’s time to see Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler back again as an item! In the first movie, their chemistry is incredibly palpable, but in Jurassic Park III, it seemed their love grew apart as Ellie started a relationship with Mark Degler, with the two of them eventually marrying and having two kids. Still, Alan and Ellie remained close friends as she started a family. 

In the Dominion trailer, Grant specifically calls his former colleague as “Dr. Ellie Sattler,” perhaps signaling that Ellie is no longer with Mark and perhaps single just in time to fight off some dinos with an old flame. Even in the short few moments from the trailer we caught glimpses of, all I could think about is how perfect they are together and how they need to be back together immediately. Wouldn’t it be the perfect ending to see Alan and Ellie riding off into the sunset? It absolutely needs to happen or I will riot at dawn!

All that being said, I do believe we’re in good hands with Colin Trevorrow as he wraps up his Jurassic World film series with Dominion on June 10. The upcoming 2022 movie surely has a lot up its sleeves. We’ve known for a while that Jurassic World: Dominion has been on its way, and director Colin Trevorrow’s franchise uniting sequel is getting closer each day. But this very moment you’re experiencing now is a pretty huge one, as the first trailer for the sixth film in the Jurassic saga has given us all what we’ve been waiting for. Now that we've seen our first look at Laura Dern and Sam Neill’s return to the franchise (as well as the return of Jeff Goldblum), it's time for some dino sized feelings. 

In the world that’s been shaped since Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s massive finale, dinosaurs are both natural beauties and serious problems. We see as much in this big glimpse given by Universal, which is almost assuredly going to play a part during this week's Super Bowl ad blitz. It’s gotten to the point where even Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) has deemed John Hammond’s legacy an ecological disaster. Though from what we’ve seen hinted at in this trailer, natural dinosaur breeding is only the beginning, as it looks like another hybrid might be in play.

This is an adventure that evokes echoes of the past, while casting a terrifying shadow for the future. It all culminates in Dr. Ian Malcolm asking the right question at the right time: “Why do they always have to go bigger?” Cue the shot of our legacy characters together again, and looking rather concerned. 

“Bigger” is a word that definitely comes to mind with the scope of this latest dinosaur excursion. A lot of the stuff that was mentioned in last year’s CinemaCon reel seems to be on display here, with everything from a European dino chase to the return of the mighty Dilophosaurus in the mix. Also, the expanded cast roster is shown off to great effect, mixing classic and recent heroes together, as well as newcomers like a new character played by DeWanda Wise. 

Though Jurassic World: Dominion is indeed going bigger with scope in action, that also looks like it applies to the heart of the film as well. Protecting those you love, as well as leaving a legacy of spectacle and conservation behind, have always been Jurassic threads. Using voiceover from Sir Richard Attenborough’s John Hammond to hammer home that second factor is a quick shortcut to the hearts of franchise fans. With legacy villain Lewis Dodgson returning to threaten this vision all over again, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

While the term legacy-quel is thrown about quite often, we may have just seen the best definition of that word realized in this trailer. Though this movie is promising “the conclusion to the Jurassic era,” there’s still plans to keep the franchise going. Life always finds a way with this universe, and this massive next step looks to hold the keys to the future.

The Jurassic World movies have been massively successful, and anticipation for Dominion is at a fever pitch. But given this thrilling ensemble, fans are worried that the threequel might end the film franchise as a whole. Producer Frank Marshall recently addressed the future of the Jurassic movies, saying:

Well, there you have it. It looks like fans shouldn’t worry too much about the future of the dino-centric property following the release of Jurassic World: Dominion. It seems like the powers that be are invented in continuing the narrative, so hopefully we’ll see more of the beloved movies on the big screen in the future.

Frank Marshall’s comments to SlashFilm is sure to be a relief for moviegoers who aren’t ready to say goodbye to the Jurassic Park franchise after the release of Colin Trevorrow’s Dominion. While it looks like that blockbuster will be the culmination of the six-film franchise, there will probably be more stories to be told. After all, Netflix’s Camp Crustaceous animated series is showing no signs of slowing down.

Given the ensemble cast and wild new rules of Jurassic World: Dominion, excitement over the delayed blockbuster is definitely high. While it’s been a long wait since Fallen Kingdom hit theaters, moviegoers’ appetites have been satiated thanks to sneak peeks like the Battle at Big Rock short. The prologue for Dominion was also previously released, which you can see below.

This prologue is definitely intriguing, showing how dinosaurs are adapting now that they’ve made their way to the mainland. Of course, moviegoers might have been a bit disappointed to not see any of the human cast, especially the trio of original Jurassic Park heroes. Luckily, they’re expected to have significant roles in Dominion.

Following his time directing the first two movies in the Jurassic Park film series, Steven Spielberg has remained involved with the dinosaur-packed franchise as an executive producer. So naturally during the making of Jurassic World Dominion, director Colin Trevorrow kept Spielberg updated on the movie’s progress. As it turns out, there’s one particular scene in Dominion that Spielberg got emotional about when Trevorrow shared it with him: the reunion of Jurassic Park’s original starring trio.

Although we’ve spent additional time with Sam Neill’s Alan Grant, Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm and Laura Dern’s Ellie Sattler following Jurassic Park’s release in 1993, Jurassic World Dominion marks the first time they’ve all been together since the movie that kicked off this saga. So it’s understandable why Steven Spielberg reacted the way he did, as Colin Trevorrow laid out during an interview with Empire:

It was through Alan Grant, Ian Malcolm and Ellie Sattler that moviegoing audiences got to witness the wonder of Jurassic Park for the first time, with Richard Attenborough’s John Hammond inviting them out to his island attraction to get them to sign off on its safety. Naturally things went sideways on Isla Nublar quickly, but that wasn’t the end of their time with cloned dinosaurs. Jeff Goldblum reprised Ian Malcolm as a leading character in The Lost World: Jurassic Park and briefly appeared in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, while Sam Neill starred in Jurassic Park III and Laura Dern cameoed in that same movie. Now these three are under the same Jurassic umbrella, and props to Colin Trevorrow for getting Steven Spielberg choked up seeing the characters reunited.

For those concerned about Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern’s roles in Jurassic World Dominion, not to worry. It’s been said multiple times that they’ll be just as important to the movie as Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire Dearing, the main protagonists of the Jurassic World film series. During the months Dominion’s production was paused due to the pandemic, Colin Trevorrow was able to figure out the balancing act of ensuring these two generations of Jurassic heroes all had a significant amount of screen time. As the filmmaker put it: 

These five characters aren’t the only familiar faces that will be present for Jurassic World Dominion. We’ll also reunite with BD Wong’s Henry Wu, Daniella Pineda’s Zia Rodriguez, Justice Smith’s Franklin Webb, Isabella Sermon’s Maisie Lockwood and Omar Sy’s Barry Sembène. Dominion will also see Campbell Scott taking over the role of Lewis Dodgson, and the other newcomers include Mamoudou Athie, Scot Haze, Dichen Lachman and DeWanda Wise. Along with directing the feature, Colin Trevorrow co-wrote the script with Emily Carmichael.

Jurassic World Dominion opens in theaters on June 10, 2022, and has been described by Chris Pratt as being the “Avengers: Endgame” of this franchise. Instead, the character Lewis Dodgson, who famously appeared alongside Nedry (Wayne Knight) in the original. He’ll be played by actor Campbell Scott in Dominion, and Colin Trevorrow has been dropping hints that he’ll be a major antagonist. In his words,

And just like that, the Jurassic World trilogy is approaching a conclusion with Dominion just a handful of years after the franchise made a grand entrance with Colin Trevorrow’s movie. It feels like just yesterday, but life finds a way, you know? The upcoming blockbuster is unique because it will unite the new Jurassic World characters with the original Jurassic Park trio of Sam Neill’s Dr. Alan Grant, Jeff Goldblum’s Dr. Ian Malcolm and Laura Dern’s Dr. Ellie Sattler. The question that remains to be seen is how it will all go down. 

Jurassic World Dominion is not hitting theaters until next summer, so for the most part, we’re in the dark. That said, director Colin Trevorrow has shared a bit of information about how the OG trio will interact with Chris Pratt’s Owen and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire. In the director’s words: 

In a recent interview with Total Film Magazine, the filmmaker shared that the three leads from the original Jurassic Park film will be just as important to Dominion as many as the Jurassic World established characters are. It’s great news for fans, and it sounds like there’s a really interesting structure being played with here. 

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom left things off with the surviving dinosaurs from the theme park being let loose into civilization. The fallout has left Owen and Claire in a major predicament they likely cannot deal with on their own. Perhaps as they try their best to control the situation, Grant, Sattler and Malcolm come out of the woodwork and get back together to figure out how to help as well. I absolutely cannot wait to see that moment when they’re all back together again and how they’ll interact over twenty years later.

Colin Trevorrow's comments to IGN will no doubt help to increase anticipation for Jurassic World: Dominion. The blockbuster was pushed back as a result of the pandemic, as it was originally supposed to arrive last year. But every tidbit of information or additional footage has helped to keep audiences invested in this unprecedented story for the franchise.

It certainly sounds like Dominion will be Jurassic Park meets Avengers, with so many characters from the past five movies set to appear. But Colin Trevorrow is also making sure that another important character gets their due: The T-Rex. Named Rexy by the fans, the apex predator has made notable appearances in each of the previous movies.

The ending of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was a wild one, as the dinosaurs that were evacuated off of Isla Nublar were released on the mainland. Since then Colin Trevorrow has helped to satiate the fandom through two short films. Battle at Big Rock showed the destructive power of dinos in the real world. And most recently a prologue was released for Dominion, which can be seen above.

While Jeff Goldblum reprised his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm for a brief appearance in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Trevorrow has maintained he, Laura Dern, and Sam Neill will factor majorly into the story of Dominion. Let’s just hope they make it out alive.

When Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom concluded with the theme park’s dinosaurs roaming the Earth, we knew we were in for something massive in the next one and the time to see what’s next is inching closer. While Jurassic World Dominion doesn’t hit theaters until next summer, we have a first look at what to expect from the film, along with some insight from Jurassic World filmmaker Colin Trevorrow. 

This past summer, Universal gave audiences who went out to see F9: The Fast Saga in IMAX an exclusive peek at the movie via a special prologue Colin Trevorrow crafted for theater goers. Now you don’t have to be in theaters to see “The Prologue,” as it has made its way online. Check it out: 

According to Universal, the five-minute preview will not be featured in Jurassic World Dominion; however, the movie itself will pick up where “The Prologue” leaves off. It features dinosaurs in their element 65 million years into the past before taking us into the present day, where a T-Rex is wreaking havoc on a drive-in theater. When CinemaBlend spoke to Colin Trevorrow about what “The Prologue” teases for the continuation of the franchise, the director said this: 

Colin Trevorrow seems to be teasing that Jurassic World Dominion will answer some massive questions as to how the world can survive with dinosaurs now mixed in with humanity. He seems to wink at the possibility of and adaptation coming within humanity where dinosaurs and people can live amongst each other, but it’s too soon to know how the filmmaker plans to round out his Jurassic World trilogy. During our interview, the filmmaker shared how expanding the territory of dinosaurs changed the franchise. In his words: 

How do you escape dinosaurs when they are no longer contained to a single park? As he described in his own words, complete with a list of the people that helped make it happen, Jurassic World: Dominion has been proclaimed a sound success. Audiences were previously treated to a five-minute extended preview of Jurassic World: Dominion in IMAX theaters in front of showings of F9. Not to mention, those who attended this year’s CinemaCon also got a special look at what’s to come in the next year. While both are thrilling looks into the future, it’s a far cry from a fully sound-mixed film that reunites Jurassic World characters both classic and modern. But now, thanks to the hard work of Skywalker Sound professionals, under the exacting hand of returning director Colin Trevorrow, Jurassic World: Dominion is mixed and ready. 

What’s more exciting is that with this news in the bag, composer Michael Giacchino’s chilling score now exists in its final form as well. Returning for his third adventure in the franchise, Giacchino’s Jurassic World: Dominion music was something also teased by Trevorrow during this extended wait. The roars of the various dinosaurs that Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will be facing off against, alongside Jurassic Park vets Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, aren’t the only crisp sounds audiences will get their ears on during this next dino safari. 

News like this doesn’t totally help those who are eagerly awaiting Jurassic World: Dominion, as it doesn’t accelerate the passage of time. But it’s good to know that Colin Trevorrow and his work on the film are one step closer to being sent out into the world, displaying its claws and teeth for all who await them. Though fear not, as the news for dinosaur enthusiasts isn’t all about delays and patience.

There is still quite a bit of time until Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World: Dominion arrives in theaters. While the blockbuster successfully wrapped up production in 2020 – with the pandemic causing starts and stops in the production – the movie is using all of 2021 for post-production, and the movie is being set up to be one of the biggest releases in 2022. Despite the fact that we still have a long wait ahead of us, however, Universal Pictures delivered a wonderful surprise at CinemaCon 2021 this afternoon by showing off the very first footage from the upcoming film.

There was plenty of questioning among the audience at the annual theater owner convention today wondering if Universal would showcase footage from Jurassic World: Dominion during their presentation in the Colosseum in Caesars’ Palace – and while there was a moment when it looked like it wasn’t going to happen, the studio then surprised everyone by having it be the last title on their slate discussed during the event. We didn’t get a trailer or an extended first look, but instead were delivered a behind-the-scenes reel that featured the stars and director of the new movie, as well as brief glimpses at the action that is set to unfold.

As you may remember, J. A. Bayona's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom concluded with all varieties of dinosaurs escaping captivity and invading our world – and that particular circumstance is at the very heart of what Jurassic World: Dominion is all about. In a clip from an interview with Colin Trevorrow, the filmmaker says that the movie “asks a single question: if dinosaurs lived among us would you be safe? The answer is no.”

The footage showcased the return of a lot of classic dinosaurs – including some that we haven’t seen in quite a long time. As you would expect, there is a terrifying Tyrannosaurus Rex, the Velociraptors are still causing all kinds of hell, and the Brontosaurus look remarkably majestic no matter what they are doing. The best surprise of all, however, was seeing a brief glimpse of a Dilophosaurus, which is a dino that audiences will fondly remember as the creature that spat black goo in the face of Wayne Knight’s Nedry in Jurassic Park before devouring him.

There weren't a lot of plot details revealed in the Jurassic World: Dominion reel – including details about time and setting – but one of the most striking things about the footage was just the sight of dinosaurs in snowy environments. The franchise has primarily featured the legendary animals in tropical environments, or at least in cities (looking at you, The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), but seeing them roaming in environments that look like the midwest during the winter is pretty rad. I'm not quite sure how well they will adapt to the climate, as these aren't creatures you typically think about thriving in the cold, but it certainly looks wonderful from an aesthetic perspective.

What we didn't get to see a ton of in the Jurassic World: Dominion footage was much from the human cast – which is notably bringing together the ensembles from both the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies. Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Chris Pratt, and Bryce Dallas Howard were all featured in interview clips, and the shots from the blockbuster did provide us with brief glimpses of the characters in action, but the reel didn't feature much interaction between them or any extended dialogue. I'd complain, but it still felt very special to see Neill wearing his Alan Grant hat again and waving a torch in front of a roaring dinosaur.

Jurassic World: Dominion will be in theaters on June 10, 2022, and while it's unlikely that the footage that was shown at CinemaCon will wind up online, it hopefully won't be too long before an official first look is released and everyone in the world gets to witness the action in this new trilogy capper.

Jurassic World fans will have to wait about 10 more months before they finally get the next installment in the franchise, Jurassic World: Dominion. However, those fans can be confident that when that movie does come along, it will contain all the exciting action with massive, terrifying dinosaurs that they've come to expect. Having said that, there is one dinosaur that, unfortunately, will apparently not be included, much to the chagrin of director Phil Lord. The man who helped bring The LEGO Movie to life has apparently been trying to get director Colin Trevorrow to include a Brontosaurus Rex in the next film.

No, you did not misread than and it's not a typo. Apparently Phil Lord has been texting his fellow director Colin Trevorrow, for basically the life of the Jurassic World franchise, trying to convince Trevorrow to include a new hybrid dinosaur that combines elements of both the Brontosaurus and the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Trevorrow shared one of the texts to Twitter for all to see.

The first Jurassic World movie came out six years ago, and so it would seem that when the first film came out, and it included the Indominus Rex, a dinosaur that was a lab created hybrid, combining elements of several dinosaurs together, Phil Lord got the idea for another such dinosaur that he though should get added to the next movie. When the Brontosaurus Rex did not appear in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Phil Lord was not deterred, and he has continued to push Colin Trevorrow to include this new creation.

I mean, does the Brontosaurus Rex sound ridiculous? Of course it does. But now that I've heard the name and seen it described, I sort of want to see one. While including the actual creature in the movie in some way would probably be too silly, I feel like there were probably people working at Jurassic Park who came up with all kinds of ideas for hybrid dinosaurs that didn't get created. There was probably concept art of a Brontosaurus Rex in a computer somewhere. It's too bad it was probably destroyed during the volcanic eruption of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Alternatively, maybe there was some rogue geneticists who just made one of these things to see if they could and to see what it would look like. Watching a Brontosaurus walk around on little tiny front legs would be endlessly entertaining.

It sounds from Colin Trevorrow's comments here that we won't be seeing a Brontosaurus Rex in Jurassic World: Dominion, but the director and franchise producer has also strongly implied that this series of films won't end with Dominion, and so there's always a chance that we could still see this in a future installment. Maybe, if enough people agree Phil Lord is on to something we can all convince Colin Trevorrow to make this happen.

Jake Johnson fans may be in for a major disappointment, as it looks like another Jurassic World movie is happening without the New Girl star. Johnson’s role as Lowery in the rebooted franchise has been kind of a rollercoaster, between him not returning for the second film and the renewed possibility for an appearance in the upcoming third film. With Johnson seemingly not returning to the franchise for the upcoming movie, he's now sharing exactly what happened to halt his return.

Jake Johnson explains that he was written a great part in the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion, reprising his role as Lowery and he was excited about filming. However, as is the case with a lot of films during the last year, the pandemic put a kink in things. Here’s what Johnson says in his own words, during an interview with Looper:

The return of Jake Johnson and his character Lowery to the Jurassic World franchise probably would have something to do with his “old friend” Colin Trevorrow. Trevorrow directed the 2015 film that kicked off the rebooted franchise and served as a writer on the 2018 sequel, Fallen Kingdom. Given that Trevorrow has overseen the direction of the entire trilogy and is good friends with Johnson, it makes sense that he would want to try to keep him in the fold.

In the same interview, Jake Johnson went into his and the director’s long relationship and how Colin Trevorrow tried to make Johnson’s role reprisal work through the pandemic issues. The actor also shared some thoughts on another potential return for Lowery. Here’s what Johnson says, exactly:

Of course, there will be plenty of character returns in the upcoming film so, honestly, anything is possible. At this time though, fans should probably temper their expectations when it comes to seeing Lowery in the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion, despite efforts made to get him in there. We can expect the next Jurassic Park franchise film to drop next year on June 10th and, just like Jake Johnson, we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for even a small cameo appearance from his witty Jurassic Park fanboy.

The Jurassic Park franchise has capitalized on this ancient fascination, partly by showing audiences how present-day humans might interact with the scaly beasts. But Colin Trevorrow, director of Jurassic World and the upcoming third installment in the series Dominion, is ready to give viewers a glimpse of dinosaurs in their prehistoric prime.

Colin Trevorrow sat down with Screen Rant to reveal his favorite scene in Jurassic World: Dominion - and it’s not what you would expect. As he explained,

This Cretaceous Era scene will serve as the prologue in Dominion, according to Colin Trevorrow. It was played as a preview for all F9 theatrical showings, and it sounds like an intriguing sequence. A prehistoric scene should be a fascinating look at how dinosaurs might have lived before human intervention. Every dino we see in the Jurassic Park series is familiar with humans, whether as a playmate or as dinner, and they’ve been nurtured in a completely modern setting. Showing dinosaurs in a truly natural habitat, free of human interference, will provide a new perspective that Jurassic Park has not explored.

The Cretaceous scene will also serve another purpose. After the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the dinosaurs that had previously been confined to a single island were set loose to roam the Earth. Humankind now must learn to coexist with the extinct creatures. By first showing the dinosaurs in a human-free setting, Colin Trevorrow is setting up the main conflict of Dominion. The ancestors of these creatures were used to living in a dinosaur-eat-dinosaur world, but their modern descendants will have to adapt to a completely different environment. Can dinosaurs and humans be neighbors? We’ll just have to wait for Dominion to find out.

And who can blame people for wanting to see a world where Vin Diesel and a velociraptor get to save the world in the name of family? While discussing the newly announced extended preview that will be shown with F9 in IMAX, Trevorrow spoke to Empire about everyone’s favorite new dream sequel. His pleasure in the suggestion is refreshing, as some creators would love to dismiss the concept outright. But Colin Trevorrow, also being a fan of pop culture himself, tended to this particularly exciting flower of the mind with this statement:

On one hand, it doesn’t sound like the Jurassic World/Fast and Furious crossover is any closer to happening. Colin Trevorrow basically put that raptor back in the pen merely by mentioning the concept of reality, and its lack of fun. Then again, his lack of outright rejection is quite nice, as it means that should Universal somehow want to send the Toretto family to Isla Nublar in the search for more money, the doors are still wide open.

It’s a notion that certainly won’t be any easier to dissuade in the current climate. With F9 already delivering trunk loads of cash worldwide, that half of the potential equation is already a valuable commodity. And with the first look at Jurassic World: Dominion footage being included with those supercharged antics, that’s only going to tie the two ideas together all the closer. Plus we’ve already seen how well raptors deal with motorcycles, so who’s to say a sports car is any sort of match for good old Blue?

Reality says that Colin Trevorrow is having some good fun, as he doesn’t want to be the sort of guy that rains on the parade of Jurassic World or Fast Saga fans. At the same time, people need to temper their hopes, as there would need to be a lot of thematic gymnastics to even remotely make this crossover event even happen. Of course, there was once a time when going to space was once the hardest pass you could imagine in the world of Fast Saga action, and look what happened there!

F9 is already in theaters internationally, with a domestic release set to drop the green flag on June 25th. But if you’re looking for anything past the extended preview of Jurassic World: Dominion that will be attached to IMAX showings, you’ll have to wait until the first trailer drops. Which is a big TBD, as the next chapter of dinosaur action isn’t scheduled to arrive until June 10, 2022.

It doesn’t matter if you call her Rexy, Roberta, or any other name you’ve assigned to her, the T-Rex from Jurassic Park is an iconic character loved by the world. Her return in the Jurassic World franchise has only proven that point, even in the midst of blockbuster beefcake Chris Pratt doing his thing with a pack of trained raptors. Which is part of why, according to co-writer/director Colin Trevorrow, the new extended trailer for Jurassic World: Dominion that will screen in IMAX ahead of F9 has Roberta as the star of the show.

In an interview with CinemaBlend’s own Sarah El-Mahmoud, Colin Trevorrow spilled some of the details of what fans should expect to see in their first look at Jurassic World: Dominion. Attached to IMAX screenings of F9 later this month, the long awaited threequel to 2015’s Jurassic World has a lot of prehistoric action to look forward to. But the big throughline that Trevorrow chose to focus on with this extended preview sounds like a journey through the life of everyone’s favorite Tyrannosaurus, as he explains below:

Now before anyone gets confused, Roberta is the T-Rex that battled the raptors at the end of Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, not the mother Tyrannosaurus that was abducted from Site B and brought to San Diego in The Lost World. So the savior of humanity from Isla Nublar remained on that island, until it was time to be rehomed into the Tyrannosaurus Rex Kingdom attraction in Jurassic World. After the pivotal events in the finale to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom however, this Tyrannosaurus Rex is about to find herself in a brand new world, and she’s probably frightened.

What Colin Trevorrow has described above is a perfect teaser into what Jurassic World: Dominion fans should expect from this latest sequel. There’s surely going to be a lot of human antics, what with the original Jurassic Park trio of Dr. Alan Grant, Dr. Ellie Sattler, and Dr. Ian Malcolm all returning in major roles. But as we’ve seen with the relationship between Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady and Blue the Velociraptor, the emotional connection between humanity and beast is a key focal point in the story of the continuing Jurassic saga.

All in all, it sounds like the world will have another opportunity to get emotional over a dinosaur in peril, much as we’ve seen in the previous Jurassic World installments. While June 10, 2022 seems like a long time to wait for Jurassic World: Dominion’s events to unfold, we’ll all get to see Roberta the T-Rex engage in a police chase when the extended trailer debuts with F9, starting June 25th. Let’s just hope for the old girl’s sake the reality of the movie’s world hasn’t caught up with recent research.

We already know that all three original stars from Jurassic Park are officially returning for Dominion. When CinemaBlend spoke to Colin Trevorrow to ring in the film coming one year from now, the writer/director confirmed that Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum are going to be back and in the field again within the Jurassic franchise. COVID-19’s effect within Hollywood has left ramifications that will be felt for a few years. A lot of shutdowns, reshuffling and shelving have cost audiences some major tentpole movies. One of those affected by this change is Jurassic World: Dominion. The production shutdown led to the film almost being incomplete, according to the film’s director Colin Trevorrow. The Jurassic World: Dominion director recalled what it was like shutting down the set over COVID, especially when he had crucial scenes yet to film.

The escalation of the COVID-19 crisis pushed Hollywood to the brink in 2020. The third installment of Jurassic World had to shut down early in its production leading to several delays. But it wasn’t that easy, as Colin Trevorrow still had a shoot day left. Trevorrow said about the final day before shutting down:

As the director pointed out, Jurassic World: Dominion only had original Jurassic Park cast Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum for an abbreviated time. Colin Trevorrow didn’t know if that moment would happen again. Neither he nor the film’s producers were sure if they could get those three back again, and he really didn't want to do a reshoot. So, finishing the scene had to happen.

In his interview with Empire, Colin Trevorrow addressed filming that final day after receiving the news of the shutdown. He expressed concern over when filming would resume. Speaking on Universal’s shutdown mandate, the Jurassic World: Dominion director said about filming the final scene:

Colin Trevorrow’s final comment proved just how pressure can create a great moment for everyone involved. It also spoke to how professional Trevorrow, the crew and the cast were to get that scene in the can. As he stated, it required no reshoots and ended up in the final cut. Let’s hope the scene is as good as the director says when Jurassic World: Dominion finally arrives.

I must give Colin Trevorrow and the Jurassic World cast and crew kudos for finishing under such immense pressure. Besides Trevorrow’s words, some cast members have spoken highly about shooting the third installment. Fans will have to wait until June 10, 2022 to see the scene in Jurassic World: Dominion.

Music is an important component to setting the mood in a franchise like Jurassic World. Much like John Williams’ work on the first two Jurassic Park films, composer Michael Giacchino’s efforts in the sequel film series have inspired tears and awe in the hearts of Jurassic fans. It’s no surprise that Michael Giacchino’s music is enough to push along a moment of pure adrenaline and whip it into an even greater frenzy. And make no mistake, this music is going to kill in a movie theater.

What's even more exciting is how this, for now, untitled Jurassic World: Dominion track stacks up with Mr. Giacchino’s previous work in the series. This song seems to be building on motifs that were central to the suspenseful themes from 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. While that could be chalked up to merely good old fashioned thematic callbacks, the recurring string motif feels like a more vicious deployment of the rumbling you’ll hear in “This Title Makes Me Jurassic” from the previous score.

A lot of teases have come out of the Jurassic World: Dominion scoring sessions, as Michael Giacchino’s shown everything from special guests in his study to the return of his punny. But to get to hear a sample so early, with Jurassic World: Dominion’s theatrical release pushed to June 2022, is something absolutely stunning. Which makes it hard not to stop playing this music on repeat, and in turn, brings us to the final destination of dinosaur nightmares.

Speaking of “dinosaur nightmares,” that brings us to one final piece of Jurassic World music that still looms tall in the canon of Maestro Giacchino’s work thus far. Heard in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the theme to the Indoraptor felt like real “wrath of the gods” material. In turn, that somewhat sets the high bar for musical terror that Jurassic World: Dominion will have to clear in order to really send us running from the Rexes. In short, if Michael Giacchino has written something so terrifying for this threequel that it tops “World’s Worst Bedtime Storyteller,” we’ll preorder our night lights now.

Jurassic World: Dominion opens its gates to the world on June 10, 2022. So surely between now and then, we’ll find some time to sleep without worrying if a Velociraptor has gotten into the house. But seeing how Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ended, that’s more of a valid concern than you’d think.

Taking to his Instagram account, Colin Trevorrow gave folks a peek at composer Michael Giacchino scoring Jurassic World: Dominion with his orchestra at Abbey Road, and as you’ll see on the monitor, the filmmaker was joined from afar by the most famous of all the Muppets. Take a look:

I’ll give props to Colin Trevorrow, that looks like an actual Kermit puppet rather than one of those cheap imitations sold to the masses at toy stores. Unfortunately, unless Trevorrow does a dynamite impression of arguably pop culture’s most famous frog, then it’s just not the same as having the “real deal” around, with Kermit being voiced nowadays by Matt Vogel. Still, I’d be curious to get Kermit the Frog’s thoughts on Jurassic World: Dominion’s score and how it compares to Michael Giacchino’s musical work on Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Now presumably many of you reading this are now thinking about the potential of a Jurassic World/Muppets crossover movie, and honestly, I wouldn’t mind seeing a test reel of such a project. But until that day comes, we can at least go over what to expect from Jurassic World: Dominion, which saw Colin Trevorrow returning to the director’s chair after helming Jurassic World, then passing off directorial duties to J.A. Bayona for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Trevorrow also co-wrote Dominion’s script with Emily Carmichael.

As far as on-talent is concerned, Jurassic World: Dominion will mark the biggest crossover between the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World film series yet. Familiar characters from recent years, like Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire Dearing, will cross paths with longtime favorites like Sam Neill’s Alan Grant, Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm and Laura Dern’s Ellie Sattler. The newcomers will include DeWanda Wise, Mamoudou Athie, Scott Haze and Dichen Lachman.

No specific plot details for Jurassic World: Dominion have been revealed yet, but following the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, we’ll be exploring a world that has dinosaurs running/flying about everywhere rather than just confined to one island. It’s also been confirmed that Dominion will not mark the end of the Jurassic Park franchise, but rather mark “the start of a new era.”

It's still hard to believe, but Star Wars' nine-film Skywalker Saga ended years ago. J.J. Abrams returned to the galaxy for The Rise of Skywalker, and was tasked with crafting a satisfying ending for the decades-long franchise. Jurassic World's Colin Trevorrow was the first director attached, and he had a very different vision for Episode IX. The script for that scrapped movie Duel of the Fates arrived last year, and one fan is bringing it to life in comic book form. And I need a copy immediately.

Colin Trevorrow departed Star Wars: Episode IX over creative differences, and his bold vision for the threequel was largely left on the cutting room floor. This made room for J.J. Abrams to complete the trilogy he began with The Force Awakens, although the final results were somewhat divisive. Colin Trevorrow had a much different story in mind for Duel of the Fates, and luckily Star Wars fans can be treated to enjoying it on the page shortly. This is thanks to graphic novelist Andrew Winegarner, who recently shared:

I mean, how cool is that? Because while it's unlikely that we'll be getting a Trevorrow Cut anytime soon, we can still see how Star Wars: Duel of the Fates would have gone down if the director's vision came to fruition. And a good chunk of the comic book adaptation is already complete.

The above tweet comes to us from Andrew Winegarner himself, who shared the news about his comic book adaptation of Duel of the Fates' script. The comic medium allows for the story to come to life without worries regarding budgets and visual effects, and Star Wars fans are no doubt thrilled to dive back into the property. This time it's almost like a multiverse is opened, as we see how the sequel trilogy could have ended.

There are so many differences in this comic version of Duel of Fates when compared to the theatrical cut of The Rise of Skywalker. This does makes sense; the blockbuster got a new script and director. But seeing the adventures on the page open with Rey using a double-sided lightsaber has the potential to inspire some serious FOMO.

As his website reveals, Andrew Winegarner started illustrating the leaked script for Duel of The Fates because he was disappointed with the theatrical cut of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. He certainly isn't the only one, as the conversation about that blockbuster hasn't slowed in the years since its release. And there are some moviegoers who prefer what they've read and seen about Colin Trevorrow's original vision.

Despite his departure, Colin Trevorrow was still given a "story by" credit on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. But it doesn't look like much of the story itself was actually carried through to J.J. Abrams' movie. And that's made all the more clear by the awesome comic book version of Trevorrow's leaked script.

While many celebs have cut back on work given the global circumstances, Bryce Dallas Howard has been a major name in Hollywood who has had a big year. She directed in The Mandalorian Season 2 along with a Super Bowl ad. She filmed Jurassic World: Dominion. She founded Nine Muses Entertainment, a newsletter that just asked her which of the fictional characters she’s spent time with on set she’d most like to be pals with in real life. Thankfully, her answer was not a pack of velociraptors.

Instead, she looked to the world of streaming for her answers. And if you are familiar at all with The Mandalorian, you probably already have a guess for which co-worker she picked. (Sorry, Pedro Pascal.)

Still, as much as we all love The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda character, did she see the baby dinos Colin Trevorrow has been teasing for Jurassic World: Dominion? I mean, did she?

That’s a cute little dinosaur if I’ve ever seen one. Not to be a total cynic here, as I love adorable movie and TV characters as much as the next person, but a lot of times movies will add cuties such as Baby Yoda and tiny dinos in order to sell toys related to movie franchises. Case in point: Baby Yoda’s been so popular that sales for Hasbro jumped 70% last year. Yes, 70%.

It’s a bet that paid off, as Disney didn’t start getting any Baby Yoda toys into the works until the surprise had aired on Disney+, meaning it was months after The Mandalorian Season 1 aired that Bryce Dallas Howard, or anyone really, could get their hands on some cute Baby Yoda merch. On the other hand, Trevorrow’s already spilled the beans on those dinos from Dominion, so there won’t be any spoilers to worry about there.

As far as Grogu goes, the little tyke can be pretty rascally, but probably still has more pros than the artificially engineered dinos in Jurassic World. He certainly has more powers. Choosing little Grogu means Bryce Dallas Howard is not picking some of her other famous character co-workers though. Sorry-not-sorry to Edward Cullen, Elliott from Pete’s Dragon and Taron Egerton’s rendition of Elton John.

Jurassic World: Dominion has finally wrapped filming and gone into post-production, but it won’t actually be hitting theaters now until June 10, 2022. A lot could happen in the world of adorable movie and TV characters in the meantime, but for now I have to ask…

Colin Trevorrow's comments to Comic Book are sure to excite the generations of Jurassic fans out there who can't wait for Dominion to finally arrive. The filming process took much longer than anticipated, due to a break when sets around the set were shut down. Pretty wild, right? And on top of these high stakes, Jurassic World: Dominion will also see the return of the trio of original heroes in Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern. Their roles have been confirmed as essential to plot, and audiences are eager to see those characters back on the big screen. Later in his same interview Colin Trevorrow explained how character-driven the next movie will be, saying:

Clearly Colin Trevorrow and company put everything they could into Jurassic World: Dominion, and the project recently wrapped production. Now is the time for the director to hunker down for the editing process, as well as extensive visual effects needed to bring dinosaurs to life. The cast and crew have been keeping their cards close to the chest, so the movie's actual contents remain a mystery.

Colin Trevorrow's involvement in Jurassic World: Dominion wasn't always guaranteed, as he was slated to direct Star Wars: Episode IX. Ultimately he departed the project due to creative differences, allowing J.J. Abrams to helm The Rise of Skywalker. Luckily this also freed Trevorrow to give his full attention to the Jurassic World franchise with Dominion.

Colin Trevorrow brought back the Jurassic Park franchise in a big way when he directed Jurassic World, which became one of the highest grossing movies of all-time. While the franchise continued, Trevorrow stepped back into a role as producer and let J.A. Bayona take the reins to direct Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. However, with the third film in the series Trevorrow has returned to the director's chair, and Trevorrow says that he just couldn't stay away because he loves the franchise so much.

When it comes to modern franchises, we generally see directors staying with successful franchises for the sequels. Patty Jenkins has directed both Wonder Woman movies so far, and she's already signed for the third. The first two Thor movies had different directors, but following Taika Waititi's success with Thor: Ragnarok, he was locked in for the next one as well. As a producer, Colin Trevorrow certainly could have directed Fallen Kingdom if he'd wanted to, but instead he let somebody else do it. We might have expected somebody entirely new to take the third movie as well, but Trevorrow tells EW that stepping away actually inspired him to direct the third movie that much more. While Colin Trevorrow doesn't go into detail about what the "tough time" he was dealing with was, he's likely referring to the fact that he had lost the gig to write and direct Star Wars: Episode IX. The director was supposed to end the trilogy but apparent disagreements between Trevorrow and Lucasfilm on the script let to him leaving the project. Ironically this led to the Star Wars sequel trilogy being the other recent series where the director of the first movie came back to director the third after somebody else handled the one in the middle.

Colin Trevorrow hasn't spoken a great deal about leaving Star Wars but he has made it clear that he was disappointed that things ended up going the way they did. Jumping back into a different major film trilogy certainly could have helped deal with that disappointment. But that's not the only reason he says he wanted to go back to Jurassic World. He says watching J.A. Bayona direct the second film, and interpret the same characters and concepts in a fresh way, specifically inspired him to go back and do it all again.

It's going to be a while before we see just what Colin Trevorrow has made with Jurassic World: Dominion. The film is set for a summer 2022 release following the pandemic related delays.

The end of the Jurassic World era is upon us once Dominion hits theaters. It doesn’t feel like it was too long ago since audiences first stepped out of the theater during the 2015 film's opening weekend, but here we are. The trilogy closer recently wrapped production after an onslaught of COVID-19 related hurdles throughout the year, but we’ll have to wait one year and half before seeing it on the big screen. Even with that wait in mind, the production has already been recognized for an exciting award.

Over in the U.K. this week, the 2020 Production Guild of Great Britain (PGGB) Innovation Awards were held to offer praise for those working behind the scenes in movies and television. Jurassic World: Dominion was the first major studio movie to get back to work this year following shutdowns brought on by the pandemic. Therefore, the production won the PGGB Innovation Award for its leading contributions to creating safety protocols and for working with a huge team of workers in the British country with its set of unfortunate circumstances. Samantha Perahia, the Head of Production for the U.K. at the British Film Commission, said this:

As Variety reports, the award went to Jurassic World: Dominion because the production (headed by Universal Pictures) apparently went to work to research the best practices for restarting production during an unprecedented time and gave about 1,000 productions workers jobs. The cast and crew were placed in a bubble together for four months and even traveled to Malta in the middle of production to get all the coverage they needed.

The shoot took 40,000 COVID-19 tests and was able to wrap with more than enough time for post-production to begin, though following that release date delay. But given everything the production went through, this is all still very impressive.

Dominion picked back up in the summer of 2020 after packing up in March but did face another short stall in production due to a few positive COVID-19 cases within the bubble. Writer/director Colin Trevorrow said that the initial shutdown did end up benefiting the movie, though, and he believes having everyone together in the circumstances will make the movie “stronger."

The latest Jurassic installment will notably feature the returns of Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern, the original Jurassic Park trio in important roles, along with Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jake Johnson, Justice Smith, BD Wong and Omar Sy. Jurassic World: Dominion is set for theatrical release on June 10, 2022.

To get their productions back up and running, Hollywood filmmakers have had to put strict health and safety protocols in place, which include having the cast and crew take COVID-19 tests. With a huge production like Jurassic World: Dominion, it wouldn’t be too hard to believe that they used up quite a few COVID-19 tests during production. Well, now we have an exact number, and it’s huge.

Back in August, it was reported that Jurassic World: Dominion had used somewhere in the ballpark of 18,000 COVID-19 tests. Now that the film has finally wrapped production at Pinewood Studios, the production has racked up a little over double that number to 40,000 COVID tests, according to Deadline. On top of that, they also spent millions on added safety protocols and required the cast and crew to be isolated for months while they filmed.

Like many movie productions at the time, Jurassic World: Dominion shut down in mid-March due to the global pandemic. They were able to kick things back into gear in July, albeit with increased safety guidelines in place, reuniting all the actors in one place.

Unfortunately, by October, the Jurassic World: Dominion production hit a small snag when one of the crew members received a positive COVID-19 test result, causing them to shut down again for two weeks. So, all that to say, Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World: Dominion has been through a roller coaster ride of production shutdowns, restarts, and delays.

Jurassic World: Dominion, of course, isn’t the only production that has faced many obstacles during this uncertain time and taken drastic measures to overcome them. For instance, Tom Cruise reportedly spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a Norwegian cruise ship to house the cast and crew of Mission: Impossible 7 while they filmed.

With such a tumultuous ride and filming taking longer than originally scheduled, Jurassic World: Dominion has had its released date pushed. Universal had hoped it would release on July 21, 2021 but, in early October, it was announced it would push its release date back to June 10, 2022. The move is honesty a bummer for fans but makes sense given the circumstances.

The third installment in the Jurassic World trilogy, Dominion is set to be a huge blockbuster. Not only will it see the return of Colin Trevorrow as director, but we’ll also get to see the original cast return and team up with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Top all that off with dinosaurs running loose across the globe, and I’d say they’ve got a winner on their hands.
