There have been some very successful spin-offs over the years; this list is not a compilation of those. No, sadly, this is the other end of the spectrum. A list of spin-offs that failed to capture the public like their parent shows. Shows like Joanie Loves Chachi, AfterMASH, and others litter this list with cast-offs that usually never even made it past one season. Still, it's fun to reminisce about what could have been. Our list of TV spin-offs that bombed.

Joanie Loves Chachie

Joanie Loves Chachi is one of the most notorious spin-offs of all time. Maybe it's because the name was a little silly, or because it didn't even come close to having the same charm as its original show, Happy Days, or maybe because Happy Days had a couple of successful spin-offs: Laverne & Shirley and Mork & Mindy. It's really more a spiritual successor to That '70s Show, though using any word with "success" in it isn't really something that should be done here. The show lasted just 13 episodes in 2002. There was a more successful spin-off/legacyquel to That '70s Show, called That '90s Show, which told the story of the original show's characters as they became parents, which you can watch with a Netflix subscription.

Joey

It's kind of crazy that a show as wildly popular as Friends only attempted one spin-off. Of course, after Joey bombed, it started to make more sense. Obviously, the show is about Joey (Matt LeBlanc), who moves out west from New York to become an actor. The show was a little more successful than some of the others on this list, lasting 46 episodes over a couple of seasons.
Fans of the CBS procedural mega-franchise CSI, prepare yourselves. The last entry in the franchise, CSI: Cyber has just been cancelled by the network.

The news of the cancellation just came through from The Hollywood Reporter. This makes CSI: Cyber the first of the CSI franchise to be cancelled after only two seasons. The second entry in the series of procedural programs, CSI: Miami, ran from 2002-2012, CSI: New York ran from 2004-2013, and the first entry in the franchise, the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation just wrapped up a mega 15 season run last fall.

CSI: Cyber, the fourth installment of the franchise, followed a team of elite FBI investigators in Washington D.C. who search out those involved in cyber crimes across the country. Avery Ryan (Patricia Arquette) is a behavioral psychologist who heads the team as a cyber psychologist experienced in rooting out criminals who use the dark net as a weapon.

The show didn’t exactly premiere to critical praise. The first season garnered only mixed reviews, and only received a 35 percent rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with the average rating per critic being 5.1 out of 10 possible points. The site’s critical consensus noted that CSI: Cyber had some impressive on-screen talent, but failed to do anything with the actors or storylines that stepped beyond what the past iterations of the show had done, meaning that the show ended up being simply more of the same for the CSI franchise.

Ratings for the show have also shown that audiences haven’t been so hot on the property, either. The premiere managed to net almost 11 million viewers, but by the time its 13-episode first season was done, that had slipped to almost 7 million viewers. And, even though the second season was given an 18-episode order by CBS, CSI: Cyber couldn’t manage to up its numbers any, and actually had the ratings fall a bit in the second season.

The show tried to stop the audience bleeding by adding CSI star Ted Danson to the cast roster in the second season, after he finished his four-year stint on the original show, which was, famously, set in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, the addition of a member of the CSI cast didn’t do anything to bolster the ratings. And, by the end of the series on March 13, the show experienced the lowest ratings it had seen so far.

Well, you can’t say that CBS and the folks behind CSI didn’t try to keep the legacy alive. After 36 seasons of television across four franchise shows, the whole series managed to rack up numerous award nominations, wins and fans. It also made CBS a popular place to go for fans of police procedural storytelling, which led to shows like NCIS and Criminal Minds.

If you’re already sad about losing CSI: Cyber, you can drown your sorrows by checking out our summer TV premiere schedule and finding a show to fill your time for the next few months.

The CSI universe has been a staple of CBS programming for the better part of two decades, but things aren’t looking too great for the franchise thanks to some terrible news coming from the big name behind CSI: Cyber. Ted Danson will be jumping ship from the crime drama to star opposite Kristen Bell in a new NBC sitcom called Good Place that, frankly, already sounds more entertaining than CSI: Cyber.

Good Place will follow the story of a New Jersey woman named Eleanor (Bell) who decides to turn over a new leaf after realizing that she hasn’t been a terribly good person. She sets out to learn what it means to be good and bad, then works to make up for her past behavior. Danson will play Michael, who will be an invaluable resource as Eleanor’s guide through her self-designed course of self-improvement.

Danson’s new sitcom has only been ordered for 13 episodes at this point, according to Entertainment Weekly, so there’s not necessarily any reason why he shouldn’t be able to drop by CSI: Cyber in the future or possibly even return if Good Place flops. Still, Danson returning to his comedy roots to play opposite Kristen Bell, on a comedy produced by Mike Schur of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Office fame, means the odds aren’t half bad that Good Place has a long future ahead of it. Danson’s departure from the already-struggling CSI: Cyber may be the last straw for what relatively few viewers are still tuning in each week.

Of course, CSI: Cyber didn’t exactly start pulling in record numbers once Danson jumped from the end of the cancelled CSI to join the crew for Season 2 of the last remaining spinoff in the franchise, but Cyber might not have held on as long as it has had Danson not come on board when he did.

Danson’s show might not be the only one to lose a cast member to Good Place. Kristen Bell has starred on Showtime’s comedy House of Lies for five seasons. Although Season 5 has yet to air, the possibility of the initial 13-episode order for Good Place being boosted up to a standard network season order of 20+ episodes could make working double duty tough on the actress.

Still, it is possible that Bell is doing the same thing as Danson and getting ready to jump from a sinking ship. Funny as it has been over four seasons to have aired thus far, House of Lies has never been Showtime’s highest-rated series, and Season 5 was the first in the show’s history to have its order cut down from twelve episodes to ten.

Ted Danson and Kristen Bell signing on for Good Place may not bode too well for CSI: Cyber or House of Lies, but it could mean great things for NBC. Danson still has some time left on Cyber so be sure to tune in to CBS on Sunday nights at 10 p.m. ET if you want to catch the rest of his appearances.
The day has finally come, ladies and gentlemen, and no, I’m not talking about National Apple Pie Day. (But apparently that’s a thing that exists, so get on that celebration train as soon as possible.) I’m talking about Kelly Osbourne returning to a primetime series on a broadcast network, which in this case involves the chatty reality star taking a guest spot on Season 2 of the CBS procedural CSI: Cyber.

For her episode, Osbourne will be playing a criminal, and she’s getting one of the most amazing/dumbest nicknames of all time: The Angel of Digital Death. The character’s real name is Stella Kaine, and she’s a malicious hacker that doesn’t legitimately kill people, but she makes it look like it happened. How? By mocking up death certificates for people and then taking all of the money out of their bank accounts and canceling their credit cards, according to TVLine. That’s the kind of behavior that makes me want to start keeping my money in my mattress, although it wouldn’t be that comfortable to sleep on all those quarters.

It’s not clear exactly when Osbourne’s episode will get here, only that it’ll arrive in 2016 at some point, likely after the show returns from its winter slumber. Oh, to see Ted Danson and Kelly Osbourne on the same screen. I don’t know if it’ll be a good thing, but it’s strange to think about nonetheless.

Osbourne isn’t really known for her work on scripted series, but she’s not exactly a novice actress. She’s appeared in series such as the British drama Hotel Babylon, the shortlived ABC comedy Life as We Know It, the TBS comedy Are We There Yet? and a guest spot of Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva. Not to mention a voice role on Disney’s The 7D as witch Hildy Gloom.

But when the unscripted side of things is considered, Osbourne has been busy for over a decade. She rose to fame as a part of MTV’s The Osbournes, and then moved on to a bunch of hosting and judging gigs for shows such as Project Catwalk, RuPaul’s Drag U, and a couple of Miss USA pageants. And of course there was that whole Fashion Police debacle, which pit her against host Giuliana Rancic in a battle of words. She’ll next be seen as a judge on Australia’s Got Talent in 2016.

Will Osbourne be taken care of in just one episode, or will her criminal antics prove interesting enough to net her subsequent appearances? We’ll have to wait a while to find out. CSI: Cyber will return to CBS on Sunday, December 13, for a two-episode run before taking some time off for the midseason hiatus.

I'm just buying us a small window of time so we can whack that mole."

For all the complaining that comes with the supposed over-saturation of superhero series on TV, very little is said about the mind-numbing number of copycat police procedurals, including franchises like Law & Order, NCIS, Criminal Minds and CSI. At least the many comic book-inspired series vary in genre and tone (for all their similarities, The CW's Flash and Arrow are still day and night. Frequently, cop shows like the 'new' CSI: Cyber are simply carbon copies of their originals--new faces in a new setting with the same old everything else. It's so formulaic and uninspired, it might as well have been written and directed by computers.

CSI: Cyber, the fourth show in CBS' Crime Scene Investigation franchise, follows the FBI's Cyber Crime Division as they try and police the wild west that is the 'deep web.' Based on real-life Cyber Psychologist Mary Aiken, Patricia Arquette's Special Agent Avery Ryan leads the special unit devoted to solving tech-related crimes in the years after a run-in with a (still-at-large) hacker in the early years of the internet ruined her psychology practice. The rest of the team consists of James Van Der Beek's 'action-junkie' Agent Elijah Mundo, Charley Koontz' computer genius Daniel Krumitz, Shad Moss' criminal turned white-hat hacker Brody Nelson, Hayley Kiyoko's trend-savvy Raven Ramirez, and Peter MacNicol's unit supervisor Assistant Director Simon Sifter, who also functions as a bridge between Cyber and other departments in the FBI who might be in need of some tech-support.

The worst part of CSI: Cyber might be the disconnect between its absolutely stale presentation and the supposed cutting edge subject matter. In the series premiere, "Kidnapping 2.0" (that title says it all, really), the rather clever 'ripped from the headlines' premise - a crime ring is using baby-cams to hold online auctions for desperate foreign parents- is betrayed by the painfully dated editing and direction. Even the score is representative of this odd dichotomy, peppering EDM accents into the police procedural's familiar dark and ominous tones.

The one thing the series has going for it is casting. You probably couldn't ask for a better lead for your new show than the most recent Best Supporting Actress even if Arquette does seem a little bored by the whole thing. She's more stilted than usual, possibly because the material is way less ambitious than her last project. Van Der Beek is easily Cyber's most watchable cast-member, effortlessly charming and able to handle the more physical requirements of the role. The three techies - Koontz, Moss and Kiyoko - are all also fairly charismatic but it's not enough to enliven the dull dialogue or utterly predictable plotting. With the current wealth of incredible television, CSI: Cyber isn't worth any space on your DVR hard-drive.

Rating:

CSI: Cyber premieres TONIGHT, Wednesday, March 4 at 10:00 p.m. ET on CBS.
CBS has unveiled their 2014-2015 lineup, and in addition to the return of some old favorites -- The Big Bang Theory, NCIS, Survivor and others -- the Eye is lining up a few new dramas and comedies, among which is the NCIS spinoff, NCIS: New Orleans, a psychological thriller called Stalker and a new ensemble comedy called The McCarthys.

CBS' announcement notes a temporary move back to Monday for The Big Bang Theory, which should help kickstart their new Monday night block, which is now more drama than it is comedy. And though there were false reports that the How I Met Your Mother followup How I Met Your Dad had received an order from the network, there's no mention of it on CBS' lineup nor in their announcement at all. So if that series does end up happening, it doesn't look like it'll be at CBS, though a last minute deal could be made (Deadline says unlikely, but the option ends today.)

Here's what is on the lineup.
