Millie Bobby Brown has had plenty of major co-stars over the course of her career, from Winona Ryder and Kyle Chandler to Chris Pratt and Robin Wright. Of course, Henry Cavill is also on that list, as he and Brown have starred alongside each other in all three Enola Holmes films. The two actors have apparently forged a tight bond on set and are apparently quite comfortable with each other. Well, Cavill seemingly felt enough comfort to make a reality TV-related confession that seemed to weird out Brown.

As of late, Brown has been promoting Enola Holmes 3 – one of the latest releases on Netflix’s 2026 schedule – and she’s been dropping some sweet BTS tidbits. What I wasn’t expecting, however, was the Cavill anecdote she recently shared with co-star Louis Partridge during a game of Lie vs. Lie for Entertainment Weekly. In a clip shared to Instagram, Brown recalled asking Cavill if he wanted to watch a popular reality show only for him to share an unexpected response:

Partridge, as part of the game, actually responded by saying he didn’t think Brown was lying about that story and, honestly, I might’ve felt differently. That’s not to say it’s weird that Cavill could appreciate a reality TV series. However, what is a bit odd is that such a revelation seemed to come amid Cavill and Brown’s work on the Enola Holmes franchise. Timing aside, Cavill is indeed entitled to his entertainment-related vices. Partridge also made a good point:

Henry Cavill does indeed seem to have some niche interests, including miniature-based war game Warhammer. That love is actually so strong that Cavill is producing a TV show for Prime Video that’s based on the game. It’s also a well known fact that the In the Grey star has a love for technology and, several years back, he built a computer and excitedly posted about it. It’s said that we as people contain multitudes, and I’d say that rings true when it comes to Cavill.

Over the years, Brown has spoken a bit about her on-set relationship with Cavill, who plays older brother Sherlock Holmes to her Enola. The Stranger Things star has spoken about how Cavill has established professional boundaries, which she respects. As for their work, it seems they have no issues there either. Brown has even praised Cavill for being able to slide into acting mode with ease even after joking around on set.

I appreciate the dynamic that Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill have forged and, from my vantage point, it really does mirror that of a true sibling relationship. And, as someone who’s gushed to his own sister (and friends) about his favorite TV shows and movies, I really get Brown’s story on a personal level. Now, I’m just wondering what TLC show has managed to capture Cavill’s attention, and I hope he reveals that at some point.

When I asked Patel about the other version of Dr. Watson from popular media, he revealed the wild conversation he had with Martin Freeman while filming the threequel. In his words:

How funny is that? These two Watsons seem to be good buddies, and Martin Freeman gave Himesh Patel some encouraging words while he was literally on horseback filming the third Enola Holmes movie. We'll just have to wait and see if Freeman ends up watching the threequel, and if he appreciates this very different take on his signature role.

Fans are still wondering about Sherlock Season 5, even all these years later. So it would make sense if Patel was inspired by Martin Freeman's performance when crafting his take on Dr. Watson. But in our conversation, the Emmy-nominated actor explained how he approached the beloved character, saying:

While he didn't try to emulate his predecessors, it's clear that Himesh Patel has respect for the Watsons that came before him. Especially Martin Freeman, who was able to really flesh out his version of the Doctor during his four seasons starring in Sherlock. Luckily they seemingly have a good relationship, and there's therefore no competition.

It’s a truly intimate moment that illustrates the closeness between the two characters. It also further drives home the fact that the tea-loving Brown and Patridge. In real life, Brown herself is married to Jake Bongiovi, and it seems his hair-braiding is something she relishes:

It’s been said that real life can sometimes inform art and vice versa, and I love that the former happened in such a sweet way amid the production of Enola Holmes 3. Such a sweet situation also makes sense, considering how personal these films are to Brown, who serves as producer on the series. Brown has been carefully crafting Enola’s evolution across the films, and she wanted the threequel to be different by having a more adult-feeling tone. While the movie does feel more mature, it also maintains the sense of wonder that’s accompanied these films.

The question fans may have now is whether or not this 2026 movie schedule entry will mark the final chapter in Enola’s story. As of right now, that’s uncertain, though Brown has expressed interest in reprising the role at some point. I would hope that any future installment receives the love and care that its predecessors received. And, hopefully, Brown continues to lean on her personal experiences to help inform and inspire tender scenes like hair-braiding one.

In the movie the title character and Louis Patridge's Tewkesbury have a scene where they discussed someone who made terrible tea, leading me to ask the two stars about the proper way to prepare a cup of English tea.

Enola Holmes 3 reviews are here, and now audiences can judge themselves as the threequel is streaming on Netflix. Early on in the film Enola and Watson poke fun at Sherlock for making terrible tea with "far too much" milk. As you can see in the video above, I asked Brown and Partridge the correct way to prepare a cuppa. As they told me:

• Louis: Great question.
• Millie: Tea bag first.
• Louis: Yeah. I was just gonna say in America, I think you, where you let yourselves down is the water isn't hot enough.
• Millie: 100%, Louie. It's warm. It's not hot enough. It's always, it's like a lukewarm, I'm like, guys, I need it to be, I needed to burn my mouth.

Right away the two Enola Holmes stars offered an important critique on the way American serve tea: the water simply isn't warm enough. This is key for a few reasons, especially if one likes to add milk, therefore plunging the temperature more. Now I can't top thinking about how many times Millie Bobby Brown and Louis Partridge must have experienced this firsthand.

The Enola Holmes 3 trailers showed off this pair of actors' A+ chemistry, and I have to say it came through when they started offering this humble American tips about how to up my tea game. They went on to speak more about the importance of it being extra hot, telling me:

• Millie: And also the tea bag doesn't work as well if it's not.
• Louis: Yeah I, it doesn't diffuse in, in the same way. So first all a hundred degrees water.
• Millie: You don't do milk first?
• Louis: No, no, no, no.
• Millie: Exactly. Okay. Then hot water, then you like, then you get like the tea going infused. Then you do your splash of milk. I like mine stronger.

Both Patridge and Brown confirmed that they like a stronger cup, which means the shade of brown has to be darker by the time you've finished using your tea bag. Then, of course, comes the sugar and milk. Suddenly I'm feeling much more prepared to have guests over for tea.

Based on the Enola Holmes 3 trailer, we also know she’ll wear a wedding dress at some point in the movie, which is very exciting. However, in the real world, the actress is looking like a literal princess as she rocked a dress to this movie’s premiere that is giving Cinderella.

As we prepare for the release of Enola Holmes 3 on the 2026 movie calendar, Millie Bobby Brown attended the premiere in New York City wearing a lovely light blue gown. It was a pretty strapless number that flowed beautifully. Take a look:

I’m obsessed with the details here. I love how the dress is cinched at the waist to create a corset look. I’m also here for the bow at the center. I’m utterly obsessed with how it flows from the waist down, too. To top it off, the actress paired the gown with a lavish silver necklace, and she wore her hair in a loose updo.

The sky blue color is what really gave it that vibe; however, Brown’s overall elegant look also felt like it paid homage to the classic princess tale.

No, she’ll be in full detective mode in Enola Holmes 3, and I’m so excited to see her back in action. However, while we know we’ll get to see the actress in the period detective outfits that are like the ones she rocked in the first movie, she’ll also get to wear a wedding dress in it, too.

That’s because, in this film, we’ll follow Enola in the lead-up to her wedding to Lord Tewkesbury. However, as she’s preparing to say “I do,” her brother, Sherlock, gets kidnapped. So, a new mystery is afoot, and it seems like she’ll be solving it in high fashion.

Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to seeing the other looks Millie Bobby Brown rocks to promote this movie. She always knows how to curate a clever and chic set of outfits for a press tour (I mean, she wore black during Stranger Things promo to mourn her character’s end), and I’m already loving what she’s putting together for Enola Holmes 3.

However, while I’m looking forward to seeing more looks like this Cinderella-esque fit, I’m also excited for Millie Bobby Brown to be back in her detective ensemble. Now, we knew going into Enola Holmes 3 that it would be darker and more grown-up than the two films you can currently stream with a Netflix subscription. However, the teaser makes that fact very clear, as it primarily focuses on the fact that Louis Partridge’s Tewkesbury has proposed to Enola.

It seems like she’s questioning this proposal too, as she says directly to the camera in the trailer:

Well, that’s fascinating, because the trailer starts with them living happily together. So, why would the titular character be unpleasantly shocked by her partner popping the question?

It’s also surprising because this reaction and their relationship are central in this teaser. Arguably, their romance is more central than the fact that Henry Cavill’s Sherlock has been kidnapped.

So, I’m left wondering why Enola was surprised by the proposal. I also can’t help but wonder how his impending wedding will impact the film’s central mystery.

I’m Sure This Proposal Will Have Something To Do With The Mystery

Overall, this trailer seems to highlight two different conflicts Enola has to deal with. One is her impending nuptials. The other is her brother’s disappearance.

Notably, the footage spends significantly more time covering Enola and Tewkesbury’s relationship than Sherlock’s kidnapping. So, that leads me to believe that this proposal that surprised our leading lady has something to do with the bad things that are happening.

It also seems that Enola will spend a lot of the movie wearing a wedding dress and getting into all the action on the day she’s supposed to get married. So, even if the proposal isn't directly linked to the mystery, the mystery will impact this ceremony, it seems.

Therefore, I have to assume that her love interest and the next step in their relationship will play a massive role in this movie’s primary mystery. The film’s synopsis alludes to that idea too, as it says that Mille Bobby Brown’s character will go far away from London, “where personal and professional dreams collide on a case more tangled and treacherous than any she has faced before.”

Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long to see if my question and this mystery surrounding Sherlock collide. That’s because Enola Holmes 3, which is directed by Adolescence’s Philip Barantini, will premiere on the 2026 movie schedule on July 1.

There’s no denying how much everyone is looking forward to seeing Millie Bobby Brown and the gang return for Stranger Things Season 5 later this year on the 2025 TV schedule, but that’s not the only upcoming Netflix project Brown's involved in. The second movie in the series received positive marks from critics (in CinemaBlend’s review of Enola Holmes 2, Eric Eisenberg even said it was superior to the original), and Netflix was quick to express interest in a third movie. It’s taken a few years to come together, but hopefully it’s worth the wait.

Harry Bradbeer — who helmed the first two movies — will not return for Enola Holmes 3. Adolescence director Philip Barantini has taken over, bringing with him Jack Thorne, the writer of the heartbreaking series (which is also available to stream with a Netflix subscription).

In the same way that Millie Bobby Brown wanted her character to evolve in the second movie, the passage of a few years and the change in writer and director likely signal that Enola Holmes 3 will skew a little darker than its predecessors. It’ll be interesting to learn more about the upcoming movie, which will also see the return of Himesh Patel, Henry Cavill, Helena Bonham Carter and Sharon Duncan-Brewster in their previous roles.

What do Netflix’s Adolescence and Enola Holmes have in common? Well, nothing on the surface. In fact, they couldn’t be more different. However, they have a few very strong commonalities. One is that they’re both big hits that can be streamed with a Netflix subscription, obviously. The second, and the more important one, is that they share a director and writer, Philip Barantini and Jack Thorne, respectively, as they are now both set to work on Enola Holmes 3.

After creating and directing Adolescence, which has been one of the smash hits of the 2025 TV schedule, Thorne and Barantini are staying at Netflix to pen and direct the third Enola Holmes movie, respectively. Earlier this year, their crime drama series made waves due to its one-take episodes and intense story. So, with that in mind, Millie Bobby Brown and Louis Partridge announced their threequel’s production with this delightfully fitting (and low-key stressful) oner:

Now, Enola Holmes and Adolescence are two titles I never expected to write in the same sentence (with the exception of if they somehow wound up in Netflix’s schedule around the same time). However, here we are. And their connection actually makes so much sense.

Philip Barantini is a totally new addition to this world, with Enola Holmes 3 serving as his follow-up to Adolescence.

Meanwhile, Jack Thorne is actually one of the masterminds behind both projects. He co-created and wrote the binge-worthy Adolescence, and for the last few months, all the focus has been on that. However, he is also one of the people behind Enola Holmes, another wickedly successful Netflix project. He wrote the screenplay for both of the films about Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister, and he’s writing the script for this third film as well.

Now, Enola Holmes 3 will notably be the first film in this series that Harry Bradbeer didn’t direct. While he did a good job with the first two, I have to admit the idea of having Barantini’s voice in the mix to provide a new take on Milly Bobby Brown’s character excites me.

Plus, what makes this even better is that Barantini has a history with Thorne. They both played pivotal roles in Adolescence. I’d also assume that if Adolescence gets a Season 2, they’d collaborate again for it, considering how well their first installment was received. So, we know they know how to work together well, and hopefully, that means we’ll be in for something special with Enola Holmes 3.

I also hope it means we’ll get some cool one-take shots in Enola Holmes. That method of filming was Adolescence’s whole thing, and I think this Sherlock Holmes adjacent mystery could benefit from it too. These films have so much fast talking and amazing action in them, it’d be ten times more fun to see Enola in a walk and talk with one of her brothers or evading a bad guy while running through the streets in a shot that has no cuts.

Now that we know Enola Holmes 3 is finally happening with such an exciting filmmaker, the fantasies about what could happen in it are flying around in my mind. According to Netflix, the movie will take place in Malta, where our favorite young crime solver will face “a case more tangled and treacherous than she has faced before.” We also know that alongside Brown and Partidge, Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Sherlock and Himesh Patel will join the cast as Watson!

Overall, this sounds like a project Philip Barantini and Jack Thorne can have a blast with, and I can’t wait to see where they take this story now that they have Adolescence under their belts (hopefully, it includes some incredible oners).

Jennifer Lopez drew in a number of Netflix subscribers with her action thriller The Mother. JLo plays the titular character, a former Army operative who goes after the criminals who kidnapped her 12-year-old daughter Zoe (Lucy Paez), who she gave up for adoption at birth for Zoe's own protection.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

One of the best movies of 2022 — Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery — was a Netflix original. Starring Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc and a murderer's row of A-list talent, including Ed Norton, Janelle Monáe, Leslie Odom Jr. and Kate Hudson, the Rian Johnson murder mystery quickly surpassed its 2019 predecessor to become one of Netflix's most-watched movies of all time. The layered nature of the mystery involving Norton's billionaire Miles Bron and his luxe private island likely even inspired repeat viewings from its audience in order to catch all the clues.

Extraction

If anything "good" can be said about 2020, it's that people sure were streaming a lot of movies. The action/thriller Extraction, starring Chris Hemsworth, was a popular choice, too, with its graphic novel-inspired story of a black ops mercenary on a quest to save the kidnapped son of a drug lord.

Red Notice

When you've got a stacked cast of Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, along with an intriguing plot that sees an FBI profiler teaming up with an art thief to catch an even bigger art thief, what's not to love? Throw in those actors' signature charm (or smarm) and an amusing script, and you've got Red Notice becoming one of, if not THE, most popular Netflix originals ever.

Don't Look Up

Adam McKay's Don't Look Up boasted several Oscar winners in its cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Mark Rylance and Meryl Streep, and audiences were all too eager to show up for the apocalyptic political satire. The story is of two astronomers trying to warn the world about an impending comet that will destroy Earth, with their logic largely being met with indifference.

The Adam Project

In The Adam Project, time-traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed (Ryan Reynolds) crash-lands in 2022 and meets his 12-year-old self (Walker Scobell). Young Adam is dealing with the loss of his dad in addition to school bullies, and this movie gives us plenty of laughs, tons of heart and an idea of what a smart-mouthed Ryan Reynolds might have been like as a tween.

Bird Box

Bird Box was an absolute phenomenon in 2018, with Sandra Bullock starring as Malorie Hayes, a woman trying to protect herself and two children in a post-apocalyptic world full of entities that caused death to those who looked at them. The movie became Netflix's most-watched film (at the time) within 28 days of its release and remains one of the streamer's most popular flicks.

Leave The World Behind

Netflix audiences sure do seem to like an apocalyptic thriller, and that proved true again in 2023 with Leave the World Behind. The movie starred Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke as the Sandfords, who were guests at the vacation rental owned by Mahershala Ali's G.H. Scott at the start of the end of the world. Sam Esmail's film is a tense statement on racism, class bias and, somehow, our obsession with Friends reruns.

The Gray Man

In The Gray Man, an action thriller from the Russo Brothers, Ryan Gosling stars as the CIA operative known as Sierra Six. The agent uncovers some dark secrets about his employers, putting him on the run from a former colleague and a network of international assassins. The film is considered one of the best action movies of 2022, thanks in part to Chris Evans' deliciously villainous turn as Lloyd Hansen.

We Can Be Heroes

We Can Be Heroes struck a chord with Netflix viewers of all ages, as it was both a standalone superhero film but also a sort-of legacy sequel to the 2005 movie The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. The flick was a huge hit for Netflix, as the children of famous superheroes are tasked with working together to save their parents, who have been kidnapped by aliens.

Purple Hearts

Streamers beware! Purple Hearts left viewers emotionally wrecked when the romantic drama hit Netflix. Nicholas Galitzine stars as Luke Morrow, a recovering addict and Marine being deployed to Iraq, and Sofia Carson as Cassie Salazar, a type 1 diabetic who has to work multiple jobs in order to afford insulin. Despite having just met, Cassie and Luke decide to get married for the benefits, and it would be a shame for me to spoil the emotional roller coaster that follows by saying anything more.

The Unforgivable

Sandra Bullock has had her share of streaming movie success on Netflix, and in 2021's The Unforgivable, she portrayed Ruth Slater, a woman who has just finished serving a 20-year prison sentence for killing a sheriff who tried to evict her and her then-5-year-old sister Katie from their home. Upon her release, she sets out to reconnect with Katie.

The Irishman

Even Martin Scorsese jumped on the Netflix bandwagon with his 2019 gangster film The Irishman, which starred Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel, among others. The film racks up plenty of streaming minutes with its 209-minute runtime, but the 10 Academy Award nominations don't hurt either.

The Kissing Booth 2

In the rare instance of a sequel being better than the original, The Kissing Booth 2 surpassed its predecessor in popularity with its Summer 2020 release. Joey King returned in the sequel as Elle Evans, along with Joel Courtney and Jacob Elordi as Lee and Noah Flynn. This time around Elle and Noah were navigating a long-distance relationship as Elle struggled to choose where her future would take her.

6 Underground

Not only is 6 Underground one of Netflix's most-watched movies, it's also one of the streamer's most expensive. The Michael Bay action thriller had a reported budget of $150 million and starred Ryan Reynolds as one member of a group of vigilantes who fake their death in hopes of taking down a ruthless dictator. Despite success on the streaming platform, a planned sequel was scrapped due to not-so-positive reviews.

Spenser Confidential

Spenser Confidential was a pretty by-the-book buddy copy movie, but Mark Wahlberg and Winston Duke drew people in as former Boston police officer Spenser and aspiring MMA fighter Duke, respectivly. Spenser gets Duke to help investigate the murder of two ex-co-workers, one of whom the former was suspected of killing.

Enola Holmes

In Enola Holmes, Millie Bobby Brown portrays the little sister of famous detective Sherlock Holmes. Brown is charming and funny in this action-packed flick and audiences liked it so much that Netflix ordered more.

Roma

Alfonso Cuarón’s 2018 drama Roma won three Academy Awards of the 10 it was nominated for, so it's so surprise that this Netflix original is popular amongst viewers. Shot in black and white, Roma does tackle some tough themes in its tale of a Mexico City housekeeper in the 1970s, but the performances are amazing, especially those of Marina de Tavira and Yalitza Aparicio.

Army Of The Dead

Army of the Dead is what happens when you take Zack Snyder, throw in some Ocean's Eleven and sprinkle in a healthy dose of zombies. Who could resist that? Why would you want to?

The Old Guard

Another film that likely got a streaming boost from the pandemic days was The Old Guard. Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne are among the stars of this comic book adaptation, which received critical praise for its plentiful action and portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters.

Murder Mystery

Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler play a married couple in the comedy Murder Mystery, which, yes, is also a murder mystery. Nick and Audrey find themselves in the middle of a complex family situation after being invited to a party on a billionaire's yacht, and it gets even more complicated when that billionaire winds up dead.

Troll

Two years after its release in 2022, Troll boasted the most views of any non-English Netflix original. The Norwegian monster movie follows a motley crew of people who must work together against an ancient troll that was awoken in the mountains.

Blood Red Sky

Vampires meet plane heist in the 2021 action-crime-horror-vampire-thriller Blood Red Sky, which sees an ailing woman going up against a group of terrorists attempting to hijack an overnight flight. The movie was viewed 50 million times in its first month, making it the streamer's most successful German title.

Society Of The Snow

For fans of survival films, Society of the Snow chronicles the true story of a rugby team from Uruguay whose Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes mountains in 1972. The film was nominated for Oscars in the categories of Best International Feature Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The Platform

Making statements on imprisonment, class and poverty, the dystopian thriller The Platform sees a man voluntarily check himself into a prison where inmates are housed in vertical cells and fed once a day via a platform. The platform is filled with food at the top, but less and less is available to each inmate the further it descends.

All Quiet On The Western Front

The 2022 war epic All Quiet on the Western Front was the third adaptation of the 1929 novel of the same name. The Netflix original was the most successful version, too, boasting seven British Academy Film Awards from 14 nominations and four Academy Awards from nine nods among its many accolades.

Hustle

Adam Sandler may be known for his comedy, but Netflix audiences have learned not to sleep on his more dramatic turns either. Hustle features the Sandman as Stanley Sugerman, a down-on-his-luck NBA scout who longs to be a coach. Stanley finds a player in Spain who might just earn him the respect he deserves, but getting Bo Cruz (played by real-life professional basketball player Juancho Hernangómez) ready for the NBA draft turns out to be more challenging than he anticipated.

Extraction 2

Chris Hemsworth's first go as Tyler Rake was a big win for Netflix, so imagine the delight of audiences to discover that Extraction 2 was even more thrilling. The black ops mercenary is back on another mission, and this one is wall-to-wall action, including an iconic prison break scene that's edited into a 21-minute, action-packed one-shot.

The Man From Toronto

An action-comedy starring Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson, The Man from Toronto may not have gotten the most positive reviews, but that didn't stop Netflix subscribers from hitting Play to see the hilarity that ensued when an assassin and a screw-up were mistaken for each other at a vacation rental.

The Tinder Swindler

It's hard to resist a good true crime story, and The Tinder Swindler was all the rage when it hit Netflix. The documentary explored the story of Simon Leviev, who connected with people on Tinder and swindled them into giving him money by saying he needed to escape his enemies.

Luther: The Fallen Sun

It's no secret why Luther: The Fallen Sun struck a chord with Netflix viewers, as Idris Elba reprised his role from the popular series Luther for a Netflix film continuation. Co-starring Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis, The Fallen Sun sees the titular detective attempting to stop a wealthy serial killer.

Few moviegoing experiences come close to watching a massive action flick on the big screen with a bucket full of popcorn, an overpriced soda, and whatever else you grab from the snack bar. However, over the past few years, we’ve seen a major shift in the way we watch movies, including new action films, in that so many of them go straight to streaming with no theatrical rollout (or a day-and-date release) to speak of. 

It isn’t all bad, as platforms like Netflix, Max, and Prime Video have given us some of the best action movies in recent memory. Here are some great action movies that went straight to streaming and became big hits on the small screen.

Road House (2024)

Though it was expected to land in theaters first, Doug Liman’s Road House remake went straight to streaming for its March 2024 release. Though it would have been great to watch Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor go at it on the big screen, being able to check it out from the comfort of your home on Prime Video wasn’t all that bad. In fact, it was great!

The Ice Road (2021)

Netflix holds it down with the straight-to-streaming action movies thanks to surprisingly fun watches like The Ice Road. Released in 2021, this ‘90s throwback starring Liam Neeson and Amber Midthunder follows a group of truckers on a daring rescue mission to save trapped miners before time runs out.  

The Tomorrow War (2021)

The 2021 Amazon original movie, The Tomorrow War, blends sci-fi, action, and comedy to create a wild cinematic experience with massive battles, time travel, and a lot of heart. In the film, Chris Pratt plays a biology professor and former Green Beret who is transported from 2022 to 2051 to save the world from alien invaders.

Extraction (2020)

One of the best action movies of 2020, Sam Hargrove’s Extraction follows former Australian Army SASR operator Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) as he is sent on a dangerous mission to rescue a drug lord’s son. This Netflix original, which Joe Russo penned, excelled in every possible way and gave us some wild sequences we’re still thinking about four years later.

The Gray Man (2022)

Netflix gave subscribers one of the best action films of 2022 with the release of The Gray Man, a massive spectacle starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans as two trained killers on opposite sides of a worldwide manhunt. Sure, there are some things that don’t work about the Russo brothers’ uber-expensive movie, but those crafty action sequences and that over-the-top performance by the Captain American actor were just so much fun.

The Night Comes For Us (2018)

We’ll probably never get The Raid 3, but Netflix gave us the next best thing in 2018 with the release of The Night Comes for Us. Directed by Timo Tjahjanto, this Indonesian action thriller saw outstanding performances by Joe Taslim and Iko Uwais in a story about a daring mission to rescue a kidnapped girl and one former criminal’s last shot at redemption. Those fight scenes are something else all these years later.

The Suicide Squad (2021)

One of the 2021 Warner Bros. movies released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad quickly became one of the best comic book movies in recent memory. With multi-faceted characters, bloody action, and a dynamic that feels like Guardians of the Galaxy with an R-rating, there’s just so much to love here.

The Old Guard (2020)

Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Old Guard, a 2020 Netflix adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name, was one of the most refreshing action films to come out during the early months of the pandemic. A story about a group of immortal soldiers fighting their way through time, clever set pieces, and a tremendous cast led by Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne made this one to remember.

My Spy (2020)

Released by Amazon after theaters around the world closed their doors because of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, My Spy saw Dave Bautista play a CIA agent who teams up with a young girl (played by Chloe Coleman) after she catches him spying on her family. Action, blackmail, hilarious conversations, and chemistry shared by its stars all work in My Spy’s favor.

Army Of The Dead (2021)

Zack Snyder went back to the world of horror with his 2021 Netflix original film, Army of the Dead. In the movie, which feels like Ocean’s Eleven with zombies, a group of mercenaries break into the quarantined Las Vegas strip to retrieve a boatload of cash while also trying to survive the legions of undead walking its streets and casinos.

The Harder They Fall (2021)

Jeymes Samuel’s star-studded Western action flick, The Harder They Fall, debuted on Netflix in October 2021 and immediately found an audience with the streamer’s subscriber base. Inspired by real figures of the American West, this story centers around an outlaw as he puts together his old crew to get revenge against a recently released convict and settle an old score.

Prey (2022)

One of the best additions to the Predator franchise, the Hulu original film, Prey, follows a Comanche warrior (played by Amber Midthunder) as she takes on a futuristic alien threat that is determined to wipe out her tribe. Using skills and weapons pioneered by her ancestors, this young yet fierce protector goes to war with the better-equipped predator.

Extraction 2 (2023)

Chris Hemsworth, Sam Hargrave, and Joe Russo returned for more action in Extraction 2 when the highly-anticipated sequel landed on Netflix in 2023. Set not long after the events of the first film, Tyler Rake (Hemsworth) is sent back into the field on what could be his most dangerous, and most personal, mission yet.

Without Remorse (2021)

Based on the Tom Clancy novel of the same name, Stefano Sollima’s 2021 Amazon original, Without Remorse sees Michael B. Jordan take on the role of US Navy Seal John Kelly, aka John Clark, one of the late writer’s most famous characters (second only to Jack Ryan). Following the brutal murder of his pregnant wife, the highly-trained soldier goes on a one-man revenge mission to right the wrongs of the world.

Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)

With intense and inventive fight scenes and commanding performances by Karen Gillan, Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, Lena Headey, and Chloe Coleman, the 2021 Netflix film, Gunpowder Milkshake is a ton of fun. After being tasked with protecting a young child, a lethal assassin turns to her mom and an elite squad of killers to see them through the dark night.

Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)

Those Who Wish Me Dead, a 2021 Warner Bros. movie that landed on HBO Max and in theaters on the same day, follows a troubled smokejumper (played by Angelina Jolie) as she tries to protect a young murder witness being hunted down by two psychotic killers deep in the Montana wilderness. This is a perfect action throwback for a Sunday afternoon.

Dune (2021)

Though it leans more towards science fiction than straight-up action, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is definitely going to do the trick. Released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously in October 2021, the first part of Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s epic novel is one of the most enchanting and awesome movies to come out in years.

Triple Frontier (2019)

With a cast that includes Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Pedro Pascal, Charlie Hunnam, and Garrett Hedlund, a story about a group of former soldiers pulling off a heist deep in South America, and some outrageous action, there’s a lot going for Triple Frontier. This 2019 Netflix action flick from J.C. Chandor has a certain petal-to-the-metal intensity that’s just so much fun to watch.

Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child Of Fire (2023)

The first part of Zack Snyder’s Netflix sci-fi saga, Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child Of Fire, is very much a space opera in the vein of Star Wars, but this isn’t to say it’s not an action movie, because it is. With a story that feels like something out of an Akira Kurosawa samurai film, and a lovable cast, and Snyder’s unique visual style, there’s a lot to enjoy.

Greyhound (2020)

If you like World War II movies and have an Apple+ subscription, then the Tom Hanks-led 2020 military thriller, Greyhound is going to be something you’ll want to check out. Though much shorter than other films set during the Second World War, this movie spends practically every second of its runtime showcasing awesome battle sequences at sea. Seriously, give it a watch.

Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)

After a lot of brouhaha, HBO Max became the home of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, aka, the definitive version of the DCEU crossover event, in March 2021. Clocking in at a little over four hours, this director’s cut expanded upon 2017’s Justice League and filled in all the gaps (and then some), giving fans all kinds of never-before-seen footage.

Kate (2021)

With less than 24 hours to live after taking a fatal poison, an experienced assassin (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) decides to use her final day among the living by going after those who harmed her. Cedric Nicolas-Troyan’s Kate landed on Netflix in September 2021 and gave audiences a riveting time with its action sequences, stunning visuals, and all kinds of twists and turns.

Mortal Kombat (2021)

Released by Warner Bros. in 2021, Mortal Kombat landed on HBO Max and in theaters on the same day, which gave millions of people instant access to one of the most violent video game movies ever made. Fan-favorite characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Liu Kang all had great portrayals while also giving us some bloody (and “toasty”) fatalities, which were so cool to watch.

Shotgun Wedding (2023)

It seems like the romantic action-comedy is making a comeback thanks to movies like Shotgun Wedding. Released by Amazon in 2023, the movie follows a soon-to-be-married couple (played by Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel) as their destination wedding turns into a hostage situation. With no one left to save their families from a group of crazed gunmen, the bride and groom go on the attack.

Role Play (2024)

The 2024 Amazon original, Role Play, which sort of has the same premise as True Lies, only the roles have been flipped, follows a secret assassin (played by Kaley Cuoco) as she tries to patch things over with her husband (played by David Oyelowo). However, when a romantic getaway and an intense mission happen at the same place at the same time, things go from bad to worse.

The Killer (2023)

David Fincher’s 2023 Netflix original, The Killer, spends more of its time sitting around and plotting with Michael Fassbender’s assassin than anything else, but there is some wonderful action sprinkled in throughout this book-to-screen adaptation. There’s one scene in particular about halfway through the movie that is more intense than just about every other action film released that year.

Damsel (2024)

If you’re looking for a more fantastical and adventurous action film, then Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s 2024 Netflix movie, Damsel, is going to be a good streaming option for you. The movie follows a young woman named Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown) as she discovers that the only reason she’s marrying a prince is to pay back an ancient debt. With freedom on her mind, the fearless heroine attempts to make a daring escape.

Black Widow (2021)

After a series of delays, Black Widow was finally released in July 2021, at which time it debuted in theaters and on Disney+ (through the Premier Access program). Set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War on the MCU timeline, the Scarlet Johannsson-led comic book movie focused more on action than superheroes, though there were plenty of acts of heroism to go around.

6 Underground (2019)

In 2019, Michael Bay teamed up with Netflix to release 6 Underground, an action thriller about a group of vigilantes that carry out a plot to depose a tyrannical dictator after faking their deaths. You’ll feel right at home if you’re a fan of Bay’s previous work, even more so if you’re a big Ryan Reynolds fan.

Infinite (2021)

Antoine Fuqua’s 2021 Paramount+ original film, Infinite, centers on Evan McCauley (Mark Wahlberg), a man who finds himself on an unforgettable journey after he begins to experience memories that are not his own. Teaming up with a group of mysterious warriors, Evan sets out to make sense of the madness and find out who’s behind it all.

Enola Holmes (2021)

Millie Bobby Brown’s 2021 Netflix action-adventure film, Enola Holmes, offers a new approach to the world of Sherlock Holmes (played by Henry Cavill in this case). The Stranger Things star’s portrayal of the younger sister of the world’s greatest detective is nothing short of magical, as are the multiple action set pieces peppered throughout the movie.

Red Notice (2021)

In 2021, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot teamed up for the thrilling Netflix original action flick, Red Notice. In a movie where you don’t know who or what to believe, three unlikely characters team up with and betray each other while attempting to get to the bottom of a centuries-old mystery and locate a priceless treasure.

Though a lot of these movies would have been great to experience on the biggest screen possible, it has been nice being able to watch them over and over again from the comfort of our own homes.

Fans know that it will be quite a while yet until we get to see Millie Bobby Brown wrap up her run as the superpowered Eleven in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, but that doesn’t mean that the young star is without a new project set to drop soon. March 8 will see the release of the film, Damsel (which you can watch with a Netflix subscription), and while she shared a cool connection between her upcoming movie and Enola Holmes, I’m way more into her sly reference to her engagement.

What Did Millie Bobby Brown Say About Damsel And Her Engagement?

Millie Bobby Brown is heading into fantasy territory for her new film, as Damsel will see her play a newly married princess whose in-laws have tricked her into thinking she’s getting her happily ever after just so that they can sacrifice her to a dragon they owe a debt. So, this damsel is going to have to learn how to fight so she can survive being trapped with the beast.

While giving fans a behind the scenes look at the movie, Brown shared the cool connection between it and her first outing as Enola Holmes for the streamer, but you will also likely notice how she snuck in a reference to her engagement. Take a look:

We see what you did there, girl! OK, first things first. The star (who just proved the challenge of Stranger Things Season 5 when she turned 20 in February) returned to Pinewood Studios to work on her next Netflix project, and if you think that’s not a big deal, think again. The studio hasn’t just been home to Enola Holmes and Damsel, because since 1936 it’s been home to hundreds of productions.

Many James Bond movies have filmed there, like No Time to Die, and the facility even has a dedicated 007 stage. Meanwhile, other movies and TV series such as The Marvels, the live-action The Little Mermaid, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1, Andor, Killing Eve Season 4 and Loki Season 2 have filmed there.

What’s even better, however, is just how clearly thrilled Ms. Brown is to refer to her engagement by calling out the potential tongue-twister of a new name she might have when she introduced herself in the short clip as “Millie Bonnie Bon Brown.”

I think the Bonnie was just her getting tripped up, but the Bon was definitely not a mistake. Since the spring of 2023, Brown has been engaged to Jake Bongiovi, the son of rockstar Jon Bon Jovi (who has already joked about how much this and the two other weddings he’s paying for in 2024 are costing him). 

Obviously, we don’t know for sure just yet if the actress will change her name legally and/or professionally once she’s officially wed, but it could lead her (and everyone else) to more very real tongue twisters we’ll all have to get used to if she does. There are quite a few choices of potential new names for the fashionable lady: Millie Bobby Brown Bon Jovi or Millie Bobby Bon Jovi are options, even though that’s not technically Jake’s surname, as are the more correct Millie Bobby Brown Bongiovi and Millie Bobby Bongiovi. 

Also, what if she didn’t just slip up when giving herself the middle name Bonnie? What if she’s planning to add it, because why not at this point with so many “B” names? Then she could be Millie Bonnie Bobby Brown Bongiovi or Millie Bonnie Bobby Brown Bon Jovi, right? I’m gonna stop now because I’m actually starting to get dizzy.

Whatever name she chooses to go with after her marriage, the real hope is that she and her new hubby will live happily ever after.

When Millie Bobby Brown appeared on screens for a second time as Sherlock Holmes’ younger sibling, she was met with lots of praise. Enola Holmes 2 was complimented by Eric Eisenberg as a “superior sequel” in his review for CinemaBlend, plus fans and critics of the Sherlock Holmes-adjacent flick had a lot of love to show for the young detective. Now, the question on many’s minds is: Will there be an Enola Holmes 3? Luckily, we have an answer. 

After a thrilling second adventure in 2022, the Head of Netflix Film Scott Stuber explained that development has begun on a third installment in Enola’s story. Speaking to Collider about the future of the franchise, he said: 

Millie Bobby Brown really is a Netflix darling. With Season 5 of Stranger Things in the works now that the writers' strike is over, she’s expected to start working on that show one last time in the near future, after the actor’s strike ends. She’s also set to star in the film Damsel, as part of the 2024 movie schedule. The young actress seems to have a very healthy and thriving relationship with the streamer, so it makes sense that they are all planning to move forward with a third Enola Holmes movie.  

Speaking of sequels, in the grand scheme of Sherlock Holmes stories, there seems to be some hope for Sherlock Holmes 3, as Robert Downey Jr. is apparently making it a “priority." However, it’s still a big question mark. At this point, it seems like in the world of the Holmes family, Enola’s third adventure will be the next movie we see considering the confirmation that a script is in development.

Much like her older brother, Enola had just decided to go into professional detective work, as she opened her own agency at the end of Enola Holmes 2. She and Tewksbury had also professed their love for each other. Overall, it really feels like this young sleuth’s story is just getting started, meaning it’s the perfect time to start writing Enola Holmes 3.

Since Millie Bobby Brown was cast as Eleven in Stranger Things back in 2016, we’ve watched both the popular Netflix character and the British actress grow up. In the past few years, Brown has become an executive producer on her movies, started her own makeup company and as she announced Tuesday, got engaged to her partner Jake Bongiovi at the age of 19. As the news went viral, so did many's responses about the big news.

While she’ll be Eleven forever in our eyes, the actress has certainly grown into a woman, and is even attending online university as she prepares to "wrap up" her role in the Netflix hit series with its fifth and final season. One fan of the series also took to Twitter to share these thoughts about the announcement:

The fact that just a few years ago we were meeting Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven and seeing her Eggo waffle obsession take form is baffling, and now that the actress is hearing wedding bells it reminds us that life isn't always about “running up that hill,” sometimes it’s a light jog into the sunset and then before you know it’s been five seasons of Stranger Things.

Some fans are grappling with the fact that Brown is 19 and engaged, while they are in their mid-20s and single, as this person posted: 

Once the news hit the internet, Twitter did collectively get “she’s 19” trending because of course there’s gotta be some discourse about whether Millie Bobby Brown is old enough to get married right now. While there’s a mix of thoughts online that range from people sounding like judgey older siblings to fans who are excited to see the actress happy, one thing is clear, she has found her person and is ready to say “I do.” 

The news comes on the heels of Netflix ordering its first Stranger Things spinoff, which will be an animated series in the vein of Saturday morning cartoons. We don’t expect Brown to continue her stint as Eleven after Season 5 drops even though the rumor that she turned down millions to be in a spinoff proved to be false, per the show's writers. Following numerous instances of sexual misconduct behind the scenes in Hollywood that have come to light in the past five years, more productions are hiring intimacy coordinators to make sure there is mutual consent on sets. As they become more popular on movies and TV shows, there’s been an ongoing conversation about whether they are important to actors. The latest piece of the discussion comes from one intimacy coordinator, Jessica Steinrock, who respectfully called out Millie Bobby Brown for her explanation of how a kiss went down on the set of Enola Holmes 2. 

Jessica Steinrock has worked on sets including Never Have I Ever, Moxie and Yellowjackets and is one of around 50 intimacy coordinators to be listed on SAG-AFTRA's registry of qualified intimacy coordinators. Steinrock recently took to TikTok to share her thoughts on surprise kisses via an Enola Holmes interview. 

Steinrock shared a clip of Millie Bobby Brown talking about her kissing scene with Louis Partridge for Netflix where the 18-year-old actress shared that she “grabbed his face and kissed him” much to his surprise on the set of Enola Holmes. Brown called the moment between her and her co-star “so cute,” but Steinrock’s reaction did not match up. 

The intimacy coordinator shared that she loves Millie Bobby Brown, but the moment was “not the cute story you think it is.” While she gave the Stranger Things star the benefit of the doubt, saying she and Partridge likely have trust built between them, Steinrock believes the interaction is the result of Brown not asking consent from Partridge to kiss him, leading to the surprised look on his face. 

As the intimacy coordinator went on to explain, it sounds like the right communication steps that she works with actors on in her profession did not go down as it is supposed to. Plus, she pointed out Brown has inherently more power than Partridge in that situation because she’s a bigger star, and a producer on Enola Holmes 2. She shared that “little things like this can escalate over time,” hence the importance of intimacy coordinators. 

As the comment section fired back, with one person saying they were “pretty sure it was in the script” and another saying “I think they were acting,” Steinbeck spoke to her point further. In her words: 

As the conversation around intimacy coordinators has become more popular, celebrities like Lauren Graham and Katherine Heigl have spoken about being initially taken aback by the professionals being added to sets. Graham recalled biting her tongue when she met with one on the set of her family-friendly series Mighty Ducks regarding an innocent kiss and Heigl was weirded out at first before coming around to it. If there's one constant in life, it's change.

Steinrock’s thoughts on how Millie Bobby Brown’s Enola Holmes 2 kiss went down certainly allows the public to better understand the lines that intimacy coordinators are looking out for on the set of productions, whether or not they are sexually explicit films. Sherlock Holmes Film Series (1939-1946)

In the early days of film, one of the first notable portrayals of Sherlock Holmes came from British actor Basil Rathbone. The actor, along with Nigel Bruce, who played his sidekick Dr. John Watson, made fourteen films based off the work of Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. The first two films were produced by 20th Century Fox and took place during the Victorian era. Universal Pictures produced the latter twelve films and updated them to fit the 20th century and contained elements relating to WWII. The first three films in the series were directed by Sidney Lanfield, Alfred L. Werker, and John Rawlins, with the remainder helmed by Roy William Neill.

The list of films includes: The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror, Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon, Sherlock Holmes in Washington, Sherlock Homes Faces Death, The Spider Woman, The Scarlett Claw, The Pearl Death, The House of Fear, The Woman in Green, Pursuit to Algiers, Terror by Night, and Dressed to Kill.

The Hound Of The Baskervilles (1959)

In 1959, directer Terence Fisher directed another adaptation of the Doyle novel The Hound of the Baskervilles. The film starred Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes and André Morrell as Dr. Watson. The film also featured Dracula's Christopher Lee as Henry Baskerville. The movie follows Holmes and Watson as they investigate a mysterious "hound" curse that has been prevalent in the Baskerville family following a centuries old murder.

Murder By Decree (1979)

Murder by Decree is another adaptation of a Doyle novel, called Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution. The Sound of Music's Christopher Plummer portrays Sherlock Holmes in this iteration, and performs alongside the legendary James Mason as Dr. John Watson. The film is directed by Bob Clark and was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures. 

The story follows Holmes, who investigates the serial killer Jack the Ripper as a private detective. The police try to deter Holmes by refusing his help in the investigation, but he prevails by gaining assistance from Robert Lees, played by Donald Sutherland.

The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes TV Series (1984-1994)

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was a British tv series for ITV Granada. It ran for 10 years, and featured adaptations from Doyle's novels, as well as brand new original detective stories featuring the character. British actor Jeremy Bratt became best known for portraying the titular character on English television, and was accompanied by David Burke, and later Edward Hardwicke, as John H. Watson. 

The series spanned nine seasons and was created by Michael Cox. The stories involved Holmes consulting the police in a variety of cases, as well as taking on his own cases as a private detective alongside military veteran John Watson, who lives with him at 221B Baker Street.

Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)

Young Sherlock Holmes was a reimagining of Sherlock Holmes helmed by Rain Man director Barry Levinson, which was written by Home Alone director Christopher Columbus. The film shows Holmes as a precocious teen in boarding school, who meets his bemused best friend and sidekick, John Watson. The two try to solve a series of suspicious deaths that occur on the school's campus. The titular character is played by Nicholas Rowe and John Watson is played by Alan Cox.

Without A Clue (1988)

Without a Clue is a comedy adaptation of the famous characters. This film also reimagines them, flipping the characterizations of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. This Thom Eberhardt helmed filmed sees Dr. Watson as the brilliant detective, with "Sherlock Holmes" being an actor pretending to be a detective so Watson can maintain his reputation in the medical world. Without a Clue stars veteran actor Michael Caine as Sherlock Holmes, and Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley as John Watson.

Sherlock Holmes Film Series (2009-present)

The 2000s saw more stylistic iterations of the Sherlock Holmes stories on screen. In 2009, director Guy Richie helmed two films about the Arthur Conan Doyle character for Warner Bros. Pictures. The films are titled Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, and star Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. The original film is about the eccentric detective's journey into investigating a mysticist's plan to control England by mysterious and magical means. The subsequent film follows Holmes and Watson as they travel throughout Europe, trying to foil Professor Moriarty's plan to instigate a global conflict. 

A third film in the series has been announced and is set to be directed by Rocketman helmer, Dexter Fletcher. Downey Jr. and Law are said to be planning to reprise their roles.

Sherlock TV Series (2010-2017)

One of the most popular Sherlock Holmes imaginings comes from the BBC, when the television series, Sherlock, became internationally beloved. Dr. Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch's breakthrough performance as Sherlock on the series helped make him the household name he is today. He starred alongside The Hobbit actor Martin Freeman, who portrayed John Watson on the series. 

The show is set during a contemporary period with an eccentric, awkward Holmes at the center. He moves in with Watson, who acts as his right hand man as they investigate a series of crimes that Holmes' nemesis, Professor Moriarty (played by Fleabag's Andrew Scott), may or may not be behind. The series ran for four seasons, and contained 13 episodes, including a Victorian-set holiday special.

Elementary TV Series (2012-2019)

Sherlock Holmes also got a 21st century American update on CBS. The long-running network television series, Elementary, portrayed Holmes as a disgraced former detective who left London for New York City after a stint in rehab. He is given a sober companion in the States, Dr. Joan Watson, who lost her medical license and now helps former addicts maintain sobriety. To ward off his addiction, Holmes becomes a consultant for the NYPD. Sherlock was portrayed Jonny Lee Miller on the series, with a female reimagining of Watson played by Kill Bill's Lucy Liu. The show ran for seven seasons and was created by Robert Doherty.

Mr. Holmes (2015)

In 2015, Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon directed Mr. Holmes. The film was adapted from A Slight Trick of Mind, written by Mitch Cullen, and was inspired by Doyle's characters. Mr. Holmes gives audiences an older Sherlock Holmes, played by Sir Ian McKellen. The title detective is 93, retired, and living in Sussex. He struggles to remember details from his last unsolved case, as his mind is starting to slip. The film also co-stars Ozark's Laura Linney as Mrs. Munro, and is as heartwarming as the trailer suggests.

Enola Holmes Film Series (2020, 2022)

Enola Holmes is a film series that reimagines the Sherlock Holmes story by giving him a young sister, Enola Holmes. The films are adapted from The Enola Holmes Mysteries book series by Nancy Springer, and are helmed by Fleabag director Harry Bradbeer.

The critically acclaimed first film follows Enola (played by Millie Bobby Brown) who is the spunky sibling to the celebrated detective (portrayed here by Henry Cavill). While tracking down her missing mother, she embarks on an adventure to save the entire country during the Victorian era. The sequel, Enola Holmes 2, features another puzzling mystery and follows the titular heroine who tries to make a name for herself as a professional detective while living in her brother's shadow. Both films feature an all-star cast, and a version of the iconic John Watson character, as played by Himesh Patel.

Sherlock Holmes always seems like an inspiration for filmmakers and writers to draw upon, so there will likely be even more films to note in the future. But for now, there are several incredible versions of the beloved detective to check out at this moment. Just a couple years after Enola Holmes became a streaming hit, Millie Bobby Brown is back as star and producer of the sequel, Enola Holmes 2. With the teen sister of Sherlock Holmes back for another mystery to solve in the new Netflix release, the Stranger Things actress spoke to what was important for her when it came to the titular character's evolution in the new film

During CinemaBlend’s own interviews with the Enola Holmes 2 cast, Millie Bobby Brown shared with Sean O’Connell how the sequel builds on her character of Enola Holmes, who is based the same sleuth who appears in Nancy Springer YA novels. As she explained, there was one specific thing that she wanted to zero in on for the protagonist. In her words: 

In Enola Holmes 2, Millie Bobby Brown’s young detective starts her own agency after proving herself to be quite clever during the events of the first movie. While she starts off feeling like she’s living in the shadow of her brother, Henry Cavill’s version of Sherlock Holmes, she soon stumbles upon a case involving a missing young girl. And in time, Enola begins to uncover secrets about the situation on her own. 

With that in mind, Brown certainly got her wish and then some for the follow-up. It's also worth mentioning that this time around, the mystery is even more complex. Rather than being another straight adaptation of Nancy Springer's series of books, this film is a completely new story based on the matchgirls’ strike of 1888, an industrial action committed by teens and women at a London match factory, and the missing girl, Sarah Chapman, references a real labour activist. 

The new movie has been welcomed with a positive reception from critics and audiences alike as it has arrived on streaming. CinemaBlend’s Enola Holmes 2 review awarded the movie a 4 out of 5 stars, saying it “outshines the original,” thanks to its performances and great story. The feature provides Henry's Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes with a key role, which comes amid his being reinstated as DC’s Superman. Also in the cast are Helena Bonham Carter, who plays Holmes family matriarch Eudoria, and Louis Partridge, who portrays Lord Viscount Tewkesbury -- Enola’s budding love interest. 

Millie Bobby Brown also told CinemaBlend that she feels “so happy” and “proud” when she sees young kids come up to her to tell her they love the Enola movies. In the interview, Brown further shared that when she’s breaking the fourth wall as her character, she’s thinking about her mother because of the tone of voice she uses for those sequences. Brown has crafted an interesting take on this character, and it's exciting to see how she's still changing. Let's hope Enola gets to grow even more in a third installment.

Just when pop culture seemed to have its fill of new versions of the Sherlock Holmes mythos, along came Enola. It late 2020, Harry Bradbeer’s Enola Holmes arrived on Netflix, and it proved to be an utter delight that provided audiences with a fresh take from the universe of the World’s Greatest Detective. It didn’t take long for a sequel to move into development, and now the critically-acclaimed Enola Holmes 2 is here – featuring a brand new mystery and quite the killer ending.

The movie finds the titular detective searching for a young woman named Sarah Chapman who works at a matchstick factory and has gone missing, and it leads her to discover a vast and deadly conspiracy. So how is the case resolved in Enola Holmes 2’s ending, and what does it mean for the future? I break it all down below.

How The Case Is Solved At The End Of Enola Holmes 2

The beginning of the end in Enola Holmes 2 comes as Enola (Millie Bobby Brown), Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge) figure out the code in the mysterious sheet music and discover that it is referencing the balcony seats at The Paragon theater. While up there, they discover the evidence collected by Sarah (Hannah Dodd), William (Gabriel Tierney) and Mae (Abbie Hern) connecting the deaths of match girls to their employer changing the type of phosphorus that is used in matchstick production. Sarah comes out of the shadows, and while Tewkesbury promises to use his position to help her, she learns the sad news that William has been killed.

Superintendent Grail (David Thewlis) arrives with his pair of corrupt cops holding Bessie (Serrana Su-Ling Bliss) at knife point, and demands that Enola hand over the evidence – but Bessie bites his hand and gets away. Chaos erupts as the villains fight and chase the heroes, and eventually Enola escapes to the rafters above the stage. When it looks like Grail has her pinned down and is going to kill her, she rolls to freedom and uses a sandbag on a pulley system to evade her would-be murderer. His head is smashed against a wooden beam and his body crashes down to the stage below.

Inspector Lestrade (Adeel Akhtar) arrives with Lord McIntyre (Tim McMullan), who reveals he was told to come to the theater by Sherlock and wishes to have Sarah arrested. Sherlock, however, explains that he invited McIntyre as a means of drawing out Moriarty, the criminal at the center of the massive extortion plot that has stumped him. He has successfully deduced that Moriarty is Mira Troy (Sharon Duncan-Brewster), McIntyre’s personal secretary, who has turned to crime as a means of expressing her genius in a world that always denies her opportunities because she is a woman.

When Moriarty is arrested, McIntyre burns the evidence, and for a moment all seems lost… but Enola, Sarah, and Bessie refuse to give up fighting. At the match factory, Sarah leads a walkout and a strike, and Tewkesbury uses his position of influence to have McIntyre investigated and arrested.

Enola plans to restart her detective agency with a “pay what you can” policy, and she rejects Sherlock’s offer to form a partnership, fearing that working with him would mean permanently being in his shadow. She does like the idea of her brother being more open to friendship, however – which pays off in a mid-credits sequence that sees Sherlock meet Dr. John Watson (Himesh Patel). While Enola goes for a lovely stroll with Tewkesbury outside, Sherlock reads in a newspaper that Moriarty has successfully managed to escape from police custody.

How Enola Holmes 2 Sets Up The Future

In Enola Holmes 2, the mystery of Sarah Chapman’s disappearance is the film’s primary narrative thread, and Sherlock’s hunt for Moriarty is more of a B plot… but it feels like it is safe to say that focus won’t stay the same for the next sequel (which hasn’t been given the green light yet, but feels like a guarantee). Now that Mira Troy – an anagram of Moriarty – has been introduced, the door is wide open for her to be the primary antagonist in the next story.

While we obviously have no idea what Moriarty will be getting up to in the next chapter of this series, one thing we can keep our fingers crossed for is that the movie leans into everything that makes Sharon Duncan-Brewster’s version of the character different from previous interpretations. The fact that she is a black woman in 19th century England very much changes the way that the audience looks at her as an egomaniacal psychopath, and that challenging perspective will hopefully end of being highlighted in the mystery.

One can also expect that the introduction of Dr. Watson into this canon will have an impact on the relationship between Enola and Sherlock in Enola Holmes 3. The two detectives make sharp partners in this movie, but Sherlock’s budding friendship with his new flatmate will almost certainly change his professional relationship with his sister. Perhaps it will lead to Enola finding a Dr. Watson of her own?

Even if Enola doesn’t find an investigative partner to work with, she does have her relationship with Lord Tewkesbury. The two young adults declare their true affection for each other in Enola Holmes 2, and surely that romance will only progress in the next story. Depending on how long it takes for the next movie to get made (Millie Bobby Brown has a rather full plate at the moment, including Stranger Things Season 5), their lives together could be very different by the time we catch up with them in the next sequel.

Sherlock Holmes’ little sister is back! Enola Holmes won her way into Netflix subscribers’ hearts in the 2020 mystery film that bears her name, and the fourth wall-breaking heroine is back on the case, with Enola Holmes 2 coming to the streaming service on November 4. The reviews are in, so do critics think the sequel lives up to the original?

From what we know about Enola Holmes 2, the young detective finally lands a case, when a young girl asks for help in finding her missing sister. The trailer suggests she’ll be teaming up with Sherlock for some good sibling hijinks, as their cases become intertwined. Let’s see what the critics are saying, starting with CinemaBlend’s review of Enola Holmes 2. Eric Eisenberg rates the film 4 stars out of 5, positing that the sequel outshines the original, with a more complex story and well-laid twists: 

Molly Freeman of ScreenRant agrees that the second offering in the book-to-film adaptation tells a more cohesive story than the first, and the movie is a cozy, low-stakes mystery with solid performances all around. The critic says: 

Paul Bradshaw of NME rates the film 3 out of 5 stars, saying the new adventure isn’t quite as thrilling as the first, but there’s plenty of fun still to be had: 

Andrew Webster of The Verge says with the origin story being taken care of in the first movie, Enola Holmes 2 is free to get straight to the fun, with a surprisingly complex mystery: 

Not all critics are quite as won over by the sequel, however, as Lovia Gyarkye of THR notes the movie is trying to juggle too much. However, Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill have a great on-screen dynamic as brother and sister. From the review:

When Netflix debuted Enola Holmes, the Millie Bobby Brown-starring adventure became a smash hit for the streamer. Sequel talks are easy to come by when you strike it big in that particular landscape, which meant that the new movie release Enola Holmes 2 already had its work cut out in hopes of outdoing. That sort of occasion calls for more action, and in the case of Henry Cavill’s Sherlock, one particular facial expression I can’t get enough of. 

Promising to “go big, go Holmes,” the second trailer to this Netflix follow-up shows more of the plot teased in Enola Holmes 2’s first trailer. In between Enola showing off her powers of deduction and close quarters combat, we also see a face that only an exasperated older brother could make. 

This look is especially effective, as it’s not the first time he’s found his enterprising young sister snooping around. So having a sequel pull some more tricks out of the mystery solving/family drama bag is a big ask. Needless to say, Henry Cavill and Millie Bobby Brown execute their respective abilities like a charm. In fact, it's nice to see that the sequel new movie has that key ingredient going for it, no matter which trailer you watch.

In terms of what’s this trailer adds to what we know about Enola Holmes 2, the case is the thing! As it turns out, the mystery of a vanished girl ties both our titular detective and her popular brother together in their professional lives. One can see why this re-teaming of Sherlock Holmes and his younger sister’s dealings have him in such a mood, as Millie Bobby Brown’’s character is back to her chaotic, pot-stirring ways.

As Sherlock blames that pattern on their mother Eudoria, (Helena Bonham Carter), it’s only fair that she show up again as well to keep things spirited. Though she reappeared and disappeared yet again in Enola Holmes’ ending, Carter’s influential figure is back yet again for the sequel. From the looks of things, she might even be around for longer than her previous visit; which only stokes hopes that we’ll get to see her square off with her famed detective son this time.

While its predecessor made its claim to fame on Henry Cavill’s gorgeous curls, it looks like Enola Holmes 2 is going to double down on the sibling chemistry between him and Millie Bobby Brown. It’s a wise move, as mystery sequels thrive on cunning plots and fresh characterizations to keep their franchises going. Between this and the announcement of the third Hercule Poirot movie, it’s a good time to be a fan of detective adventures. Even if part of the fun is watching someone's very resolve tested at all turns by their brilliant younger sister. 

Enola Holmes 2 puts together a new round of clues, and scenes of Henry Cavill's increasingly handsome impatience, starting November 4, so be sure to grab a a Netflix subscription. That’s the same exact venue where you can enjoy Enola’s first adventure as a consulting detective, so you’ve got time to enjoy those previous exploits. 

Starting with Beasts of No Nation in 2015, Netflix has delivered all kinds of original movies to its subscribers, and each year the platform’s output of cinematic entertainment increases. Even just a month into 2022, movies like The Royal Treatment and Home Team have already made the rounds, but there’s plenty more to come. In fact, a new trailer has dropped teasing some of the bigger Netflix movies for this year, and it includes first looks at Knives Out 2, The Gray Man and Henry Cavill’s return as Sherlock Homes in Enola Holmes 2.

This preview takes a page from Deadpool’s book and sees many of the main actors from Netflix movies this year breaking the fourth wall between snippets of actual footage from these movies. In the case of Knives Out 2 though, Daniel Craig doesn’t talk to viewers about the joys of watching feature films. Instead, we simply see his character, private investigator Benoit Blanc, peering off in the same direction as costars Kathryn Hahn, Jessica Henwick, Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr., Madelyn Cline and Dave Bautista. The whodunnit sequel that Rian Johnson returned to write and direct primarily filmed in Greece, and its other starring actors include Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe and Ethan Hawke. 

Moving on, we have The Gray Man, which is based on the same-named novel by Mark Greaney and stars Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans as Court Gentry and Lloyd Hansen, respectively. We knew a bit about The Gray Man before, but in the trailer Gosling spends a little time addressing the audience in the midst of a fight atop a moving train, and in addition to getting quick looks at costars Ana de Armas and Regé-Jean Page, this portion of the trailer ends with a peek at a phone conversation between the main protagonist and antagonist. This flick is Netflix’s most expensive movie yet, reportedly being given a production budget upwards of $200 million.

Then there’s Enola Holmes 2, which continues to adapt the Enola Holmes Mysteries book series by Nancy Springer. Millie Bobby Brown’s Enola is already known for breaking the fourth wall, but Henry Cavill’s Sherlock decides to get in on that action during this trailer, much to his sister’s dismay. Enola Holmes 2 will also feature Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes and Louis Partridge as Tewkesbury.

Some of the other movies teased in this Netflix trailer include The Mother, The Adam Project, Spiderwick, They Cloned Tyrone and The School for Good and Evil. Even accounting for all the movies in the Netflix 2022 Movie Preview, they’re just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to original features hitting this streaming service this year. When most of us finish a big job we might decide to celebrate with a nice dinner or (if it was an especially massive task taking) a few days off. Henry Cavill recently finished a gig, as he has apparently completed shooting on the Netflix Enola Holmes sequel. But he celebrated by going for a run, because of course.

The once, and , maybe future Superman, posted a short video to Instagram where he revealed that he just wrapped his work on Enola Holmes 2, which will likely make a lot of people excited. He says he spent most of that last day considering not going for his morning run, but he did it, and he wants you to do it too. Cavill says... 

On the one hand, taking a day off wouldn’t have been the worst thing. One can argue Henry Cavill earned a day off for completing his work on a movie. At the same time, anybody who works out, or has tried to, knows how easy it can fall apart if you start taking days off. Henry Cavill says don’t do it. Although, for him, staying in good shape is particularly important.

Of course, while the workout motivation from Henry Cavill might be great, for some the bigger news here is that Enola Holmes 2 filming is underway, and has moved along to the point that Cavill is already done. It’s possible he’s been on the set for some time and we just didn’t know it. It’s also possible that Cavill just didn’t have much work to do.

The movie is about Millie Bobby Brown’s title character, so we wouldn’t necessarily expect Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes to be a major player, but his supporting role was quite popular in the first movie. So it would be of little surprise if he was given a larger role in the sequel. 

Enola Holmes was well received by fans when it arrived on Netflix and a sequel was given the green light fairly quickly, once some minor legal issues with the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were worked out. While the movie likely still has some shooting to do, it will probably be finishing up soon, and we can expect the movie to hit the streaming service some time next year. 

Almost exactly a year ago, Enola Holmes hit Netflix and dazzled fans of mystery with a fresh twist on the Sherlock Holmes story, with the detective’s younger sister solving a conundrum of her own. Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown starred as Enola, a quirky and clever young girl with an eye for observing, and Justice League’s Henry Cavill played the world’s greatest detective, and a lot of people loved it. The movie is now getting a sequel, and there will, in fact, be a number of welcome familiar faces.

In addition to Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill back as the Holmes siblings, it has also been announced that their mother, Eudoria Holmes will once again be played by Helena Bonham Carter, per Variety. She is the beloved character actress found in films like Sweeney Todd, Les Miserables and the Harry Potter series. Carter played a key role in the first Enola Holmes, and we’re overjoyed she’ll be part of the sequel.

Enola Holmes was an adaptation of the Nancy Springer-penned young adult books of the same name. The 2020 movie was based on the first book in the series, The Case of the Missing Marquess, which involved young Enola trying to find her missing mother, played by Helena Bonham Carter. There are seven Enola Holmes books thus far, with the next book called The Case of the Left-Handed Lady. Should the sequel go in order, Enola may be hunted down by Sherlock Holmes as she unravels a mystery about an artist named Lady Cecily.

Along with Helena Bonham Carter joining the Enola Holmes 2 cast, Enola’s friend and potential blooming love interest Tewkesbury will return, with Louis Partridge back among the cast. The same creative team is also back, including director Harry Bradbeer and writer Jack Thorne. The sequel is expected to begin production shortly in London.

Also joining the world of Enola Holmes for the first time is David Thewis, who worked with Helena Bonham Carter on the Harry Potter films when he played Remus Lupin. Dune’s Sharon Duncan-Brewster and newcomers Hannah Dodd, Abbie Hern and Gabriel Tierney are also involved. Adeel Akhtar, who played Inspector Lestrade in Enola Holmes, is also reportedly back for the sequel.

Enola Holmes has become one of the most watched Netflix original movies ever. The streaming platform recently updated its Top 10, and the movie was No.7 in between The Old Guard and Project Power with 77 million households checking it out in its first 28 days of release. At the top of the movie list is Extraction, which is also soon getting a sequel starring Chris Hemsworth once again.

We don’t have a release date for Enola Holmes 2 yet, but it's a good bet it'll arrive in late 2022. If so, Millie Bobby Brown has a huge year ahead of her, with Stranger Things also coming back for Season 4 next year as well. And you can soon catch Henry Cavill in Season 2 of Netflix’s The Witcher, coming December 17.

Superman has been around for decades, and many actors in the past have taken on the challenge to accurately portray the famous superhero for fans to enjoy. Most recently, Henry Cavill has signed on to that role, and while some of the movies he has been in have been questionable (ah, Batman V. Superman), there’s no denying that Cavill fits the part.

However, Cavill is known for plenty of other roles besides playing the red-caped superhero, most that fans of the actor should watch if they want to get a taste for what Cavill can do. From big films like Justice League to hit TV shows like The Witcher, this is what you should watch if you like Henry Cavill.

The Witcher (Netflix)

Well, obviously I have to put The Witcher on here. Arguably, the fantasy series is one of Cavill’s biggest successes, as it should be. The Witcher tells the story of Geralt of Rivia, one of the last known Witchers (basically a monster hunter) in the world, and the adventures of his life, told over hundreds of years in a medieval-esq kingdom full of monsters, sorcery, and evil men and women.

Henry Cavill has taken on the main role as Geralt and has done a great job of it. I think what makes The Witcher great to watch more so is that Cavill is actually a big fan of the series, both the books and the games, so he was extremely dedicated to getting this part just right. And, obviously, it’s one of the most-viewed original series’ ever on Netflix, so the fans are there.

Enola Holmes (Netflix)

Switching over from a TV show to a movie, Enola Holmes is a surprisingly interesting and fun film that Cavill rocks in. Enola Holmes tells the story of the youngest of the Holmes siblings, Enola, and how she wants to live up to the legacy of her brother, the famous Sherlock Holmes, while trying to run away from the pressures that society puts on her.

Cavill portrays Sherlock, and at first, I was a bit skeptical, considering I never thought of Sherlock as this big, muscly man. But, the movie (and Cavill himself) do a great job of showing that amount of intrigue and brilliance that the character is known for. Plus, he’s just a side-character.

The Tudors (Showtime)

Arguably what made Henry Cavill famous, The Tudors is all about the reign and the marriages of King Henry VIII – otherwise known as the man who basically invented divorce in England. The series covers the drama that came with his reign, and the repercussions of his actions.

The actor portrayed Charles Brandon, the first Duke of Suffolk, and more importantly, the brother-in-law to Henry VIII. There’s a reason why Cavill received many roles after this show, and it’s because he did a great job at portraying the historical figure. Even though this part of English history is dramatized frequently on TV due to the craziness of it all, it’s fun to watch a series really lean in to the insanity of what went down, even if the show does take some liberties with history now and then.

The Cold Light Of Day (Showtime)

Cavill really does have some range, because we are moving away from historical dramas and stepping into an action thriller with The Cold Light of Day. The story follows the tale of Will, who has to take matters into his own hands when his family is kidnapped by foreign agents, who were searching for a briefcase which Will’s father stole.

When I look at Cavill, I always instantly think of an action-movie man, because he has that sort of charisma where he’s very easy to cheer on. Not only that, the man really knows how to fight. In addition, the movie also stars some big names alongside him, like Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver, so it’s worth a shot to watch just for the cast.

Mission Impossible - Fallout (Hulu)

Moving onto another action film, Cavill lent his skills over to the Mission Impossible franchise by joining the cast of Mission Impossible – Fallout. If you don’t know what this series is, you’ve truly been living under a rock, considering it’s been going for decades now. Tom Cruise leads this spy franchise, showing off his moves in numerous crazy stunts, to continue the story of Ethan Hunt.

However, even if Cruise is the main star, Cavill does a fantastic job playing August Walker. Not only do you get to see his action skills once more (improved at this point because he’s been Superman for some time now), you get to see him as the type of character he doesn't normally portray. I won’t give away too many spoilers, but it’s certainly a change. Plus, you get to see him with a sick mustache. Totally worth the watch.

Night Hunter (Amazon Prime)

Moving on to a psychological thriller, Cavill continued to expand his work by joining the cast of Night Hunter. The tale follows a police department and a vigilante getting caught up in a scheme which involves a man who was recently arrested after being linked to years of female abductions.

While it’s not Cavill’s best film to date (in my opinion), I personally think it is super cool to see him take on this genre, and in a role that I had never seen him in before previous to my viewing of this film. Even so, there are plenty of other stars like Stanley Tucci, Alexandra Daddario, and Nathan Fillion to watch alongside Cavill, so there’s no denying the star power that comes with the film. Night Hunter might be worth a shot if you’re into thrillers.

Sand Castle (Netflix)

Now, moving onto a war drama (I wasn’t joking when I said Cavill has dipped his toes into everything), we take a look at the Netflix original movie, Sand Castle. The film, based on the true events of the film’s writer, takes place during the 2003 Iraq War and follows the story of a young rifleman named Matt Ocre.

While there are so many war movies out there, I think what makes this one stand out is that it talks about one of the more recent wars. Most war films I’ve seen focus on World War 1 or 2, or the Vietnam War but this one touches a much more recent conflict. Cavill, who portrays a captain leading a Special Forces unit, does a good job of showing the dangers of war and the horrors that can come from it. Sand Castle is definitely worth the watch if you’re into war movies.

Man Of Steel And His Other DCEU Movies (HBO Max)

Alright, I might have said earlier that some of Cavill’s films in the DCEU haven’t been the best (just because of Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice), but that doesn’t mean that he’s not good in them. In fact, Cavill is actually really great as Superman/Clark Kent. You can also see him in Justice League, as well as Man of Steel, which kicked off the DCEU. In both of these, Cavill does a great job of showing off the awesomeness that is Superman.

Even so, with Zack Snyder’s Justice League set to come out on HBO Max soon, what better time than now to catch up on Cavill's other DCEU work? I think it would quite an enjoyable afternoon. While many reports have come out saying Cavill could still reprise the role, these movies are definitely worth the time to see where he began with the iconic character.

It’s clear that Cavill has acting chops to spare in multiple genres. Only time will tell where he goes next, but, hopefully, it will be the completion of The Witcher Season 2.

While totally unexpected, Netflix had an important role to play in 2020. When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit and theaters began to close, the streaming giant was thrust into the spotlight as the most accessible source for new feature films around the world. Some titles were released as planned, and some titles were acquired from other studios, but either way no company consistently produced as many original movies throughout the year. And while the full catalog most certainly didn’t exclusively provide winners, there were some phenomenal premieres on the service, and now that we’ve reached the back half of December we’re taking a moment to celebrate those releases.

There wasn’t a month that went by in 2020 that didn’t see Netflix release at least one legitimately entertaining or fascinating new feature, but we’ve whittled a list down to 10 titles to focus on. There are examples from a wide variety of genres and mediums, and multiple made by some of the best directors in the business. These are titles that should never get buried in the streaming service’s massive catalog – and we’ll start by highlighting what is, full stop, one of the best films of the year…

Mank

It takes a lot of guts for a film to purposefully stand in the shadow of what is arguably the greatest movie ever made, but that’s exactly what David Fincher did in the making of Mank, and the result is glorious. It’s sold as the story behind the making of Citizen Kane, but what it is ultimately is an examination of not only the fascinating man that was Herman Mankiewicz (portrayed brilliantly by Gary Oldman), but also a brilliant snapshot of Hollywood and politics of the 1930s. It’s as smart as it is funny as it is enlightening, and black-and-white visual feast.

I’m Thinking Of Ending Things

If you’re looking to experience cinematic existential angst, you really can’t do much better than the work of Charlie Kaufman, and Netflix has allowed him to do what he does best with I’m Thinking Of Ending Things. The story begins simply enough, following a girlfriend (Jesse Buckley) and boyfriend (Jessie Plemons) as they travel for a dinner at the boyfriend’s parent’s house, but how things spin out from there is brilliant in its strangeness and utterly mesmerizing. It’s a work that demands dissection, but one of the great things about the streaming service is that as soon as the movie ends you can immediately go back and analyze it scene-by-scene.

The Social Dilemma

Do you ever feel like you’re addicted to your phone? Well, there’s a good reason for that, and Jeff Orlowski's documentary The Social Dilemma delves into that reason with frightening clarity. Utilizing a well-done dramatic narrative featuring Skyler Gisondo and Vincent Kartheiser to further illustrate its points, the movie exposes the disturbing inner workings of your favorite social media apps via interviews with a number of people who helped bring them to life. It’s a wakeup call that very well may cause you to start creating some distance between yourself and your mobile devices.

Da 5 Bloods

Netflix has attempted in recent years to paint itself as a haven for the best filmmakers in the world to make projects they are passionate about, the roster including names like Martin Scorsese, Alfonso Cuaron, and Bong Joon-ho, and this year saw Spike Lee join that awesome collective with the epic Da 5 Bloods. The film sports drama and adventure in equal measure, following a squad of Black former US Army soldiers (Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock Jr.) as they return to Vietnam in search of a hidden treasure, and what emerges from journey is a powerful reconciliation of the present and events of the past.

The Trial Of The Chicago 7

Aaron Sorkin most definitely knows how to handle true story adaptations (The Social Network, Moneyball) and courtroom dramas (A Few Good Men), and the writer/director puts those talents to great use for The Trial Of The Chicago 7. It was a film that was headed to theaters before the pandemic, sold to Netflix in July, but still packs a punch even shown at home – telling the story of a group of anti-war protestors who find themselves on trial facing charges from the federal government in the fallout of the riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. The all-star cast, including Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Keaton, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, doesn’t have a single weak link, as everyone in the ensemble delivers excellent performances.

His House

We went without the high profile scares of Halloween Kills and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It this fall, as both movies were delayed until 2021, but Netflix came through in a big way for Halloween by dropping Remi Weekes’ His House on the service at the end of October. Following a couple of Sudanese refugees who try to make a home for themselves in London, the movie weaves a terrifying tale as the husband and wife not only struggle to adapt to their new world, but also find themselves haunted by the past. It provided us with some of the most unnerving sequences of 2020, which is why it also made our list of the year’s best horror films

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

George C. Wolfe’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will forever be remembered for featuring the final performance by Chadwick Boseman – a talent who passed away far too young this year – but even standing apart from that sad fact it’s an astonishing work. It doesn’t stretch far from the August Wilson play on which its based, but material packs a spectacular punch, and both Boseman and Viola Davis deliver two of the best performances of their remarkable careers, trading off protagonist and antagonist roles throughout the narrative, and leaving you pressed hard in the back of your chair as the end credits roll.

The Lovebirds

Michael Showalter’s The Lovebirds was originally going to be an early-in-the-year big screen comedy, set to be released theatrically in late March – but then it wound up being one of the first movies delayed by COVID-19. Thankfully, Netflix scooped it up from Paramount, and while it was released about two months after originally intended, it delivered huge laughs at a crucial time. Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae are both stellar in the film and make for a hilarious bickering couple on the run from the law after being framed for murder. Even though it didn’t play in theaters, it still further establishes its stars as talented big screen leads, and we can’t wait to see them heading more features in the near future.

Enola Holmes

It’s easy to dismiss Harry Bradbeer’s Enola Holmes on paper, as it seems like another attempt by Hollywood to take advantage of Sherlock Holmes’ public domain status by telling a familiar story from the perspective of a spunky teen girl. What that perspective overlooks, however, is that spunky teen girl being played by Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, who delivers the best performance of her young career. The central mystery is more compelling for younger viewers, but there’s still no denying its wonderful energy, and it still manages to be thrilling. It has tons of franchise potential, so expect to see more chapters on Netflix in the coming years.

Uncorked

Prentice Penny’s Uncorked has the structure of a standard coming-of-age story, following a young man (Mamoudou Athie) as he belies the wishes of his father (Courtney B. Vance) to take over the family barbecue business in favor of pursuing a dream to become a master sommelier. And while it’s actually very successful in that simple fact, building strong characters and emotional relationships, it also goes beyond the familiar by diving into particular culinary worlds not greatly explored in cinema. And if you can swing it, it’s definitely best enjoyed with a smoked brisket paired with a nice red – otherwise you might just be left with cravings during and after.

The World's Greatest Detective has been involved in a copyright battle between the estate of Sherlock Homes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Netflix since before the latter company released Enola Holmes, a film that included Millie Bobby Brown as the previously unknown younger sister of the great detective. Now, several months after the film's release, and general success, the legal battle is over, which may clear the way for a sequel film, which could see the cast, including Henry Cavill as Sherlock, return.

According to THR, the lawsuit brought be the Conan Doyle Estate against Netflix has been settled and the lawsuit in New Mexico Federal Court has been officially dismissed. The terms of the settlement were not revealed, though one assumes that each side got something that they wanted without giving up much more than they felt was necessary.

One can guess that part of Netflix's expectation was not having to deal with legal challenges again, which may mean that a sequel to Enola Holmes, something that seems quite possible considering the popularity of the first film, is now a much bigger possibility. It's understandable Netflix might have been unwilling to greenlight such a thing while the legal battle was still ongoing.

The estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had claimed that the character of Sherlock Holmes that was being portrayed in Enola Holmes by Henry Cavill was still under copyright. While the vast majority of the original Sherlock Holmes stories have since seen their copyright end, the final batch of stories, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes are still under copyright, and the estate argued that elements of Holmes' character seen in the movie, such as him being a warmer and kinder person, were specific to these later stories.

In early November, Netflix responded to this claim, claiming that copyright law simply did not extend to these concepts. That was the last official filling in the suit until the dismissal.

Now that the case is over, we'll have to see if that means that a sequel to the film could now begin to take shape at Netflix. Director Harry Bradbeer had already confirmed that the possibility of sequels had been discussed. The book series that the Enola Holmes character is based on has multiple entries, so clearly Netflix is at least somewhat interested. It makes sense the streaming giant would have held off until the legal issues were completed. If the Estate of Conan Doyle had won even a partial victory in court, it likely would have prevented Netflix from making such a movie, or at the very least made it considerably more expensive to do so.

Enola Holmes was embraced by fans and critics and Henry Cavill's Sherlock (and his hair) was one of the major reasons for that. With the legal battle over, perhaps we'll now see a sequel begin to take shape.

This year, families are going to learn what it is like to celebrate Thanksgiving in the midst of a pandemic. Some may brave the storm out of trust in their relatives’ health, share a meal over an online conference call, or cancel plans altogether and eat alone. No matter how you end up giving thanks this year, there should be plenty of time after your feast for movie night and there are more than enough new Netflix movies that you should see about adding to your “What to watch” list.

With 2020 being a challenging time for social interaction and the odds of movie night being a family affair slimmer than usual, we were sure compile some acclaimed films recently added to the streaming platform that may be best for solo viewing, like Rebecca or Hillbilly Elegy. Millie Bobby Brown has been a Netflix regular for years now thanks to her role as Eleven on the hit series Stranger Things. However, 2020 marked her first time starring in a Netflix movie, as Enola Holmes, which was originally intended for theatrical release, ended up coming out in September on the streaming service. Now Brown is getting ready to team with Netflix on another movie, this one being a fantasy adventure titled Damsel. How appropriate that this news come out on 11/11, of all days.

In addition to playing Damsel’s lead character, Millie Bobby Brown will also executive produce the movie. The actress already has some producing experience under her belt thanks to Enola Holmes. Along with Brown, Damsel has brought aboard 28 Weeks Later’s Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to direct and Wrath of the Titans’ Dan Mazeau to write the screenplay. Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum will produce, and Mazeau, Zack Roth and Chris Castaldi will executive produce alongside Brown.

Although Netflix didn’t provide any official plot details about Damsel, Deadline reports that this fantasy movie will see Millie Bobby Brown playing Princess Elodie, who initially believes she’s being married off to Prince Henry from a rival kingdom, but discovers that she’s actually being sacrificed to a dragon. So while Brown is already quite familiar with the sci-fi space thanks to Stranger Things, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong, Damsel will mark her first time leading a fantasy movie. That said, this isn’t the first time Brown has played around in the fantasy realm, as she appeared as a young Alice in the short-lived ABC series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland.

While Damsel sounds like it’ll be another high-profile Netflix project for Millie Bobby Brown, the actress and streaming service already had more collaborations planned beyond Stranger Things. Brown is set to star in a film adaptation of the upcoming Tess Sharpe-authored book The Girls I’ve Been as its main character, Nora O’Malley. Brown will also star in The Thing About Jellyfish, which is being adapted from the same-named book by Ali Benjamin.

It’s unclear which of these three Netflix movies will come out first, although since Damsel has also hired a director and screenwriter, there’s a decent chance it will be prioritized. Of course, let’s not forget that Stranger Things Season 4 is also back rolling cameras after having to pause shooting in March due to the health crisis. So even if Damsel will be the next thing that Brown works on for Netflix, she needs to finish her latest round of Eleven performances first.

As mentioned earlier, along with everything she has going on at Netflix, Millie Bobby Brown is building blockbuster cred with the MonsterVerse franchise. She debuted as Madison Russell in Godzilla: King of the Monsters last year, and she’s reprising the character for Godzilla vs. Kong, with Kyle Chandler also coming back as Madison’s father, Dr. Mark Russell. Godzilla vs. Kong was previously supposed to come out this month, but it’s now slated to arrive in theaters on May 21, 2021.

Sherlock Holmes is one of the most popular fictional characters who has ever been created. He's been seen countless times since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created him, in books written by others, in film and on television. Most recently Sherlock appeared portrayed by Henry Cavill in the Netflix film Enola Holmes, and it's that film that has seen the estate of Conan Doyle file a lawsuit against Netflix and other entities involved in the film, and now they have responded.

While the majority of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes are in the public domain, the last batch of them, the stories which make up The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, are still under copyright, and the estate of Conan Doyle claims that the film Enola Holmes violates that copyright because the movie shows Sherlock Holmes in a form that he was only seen in those stories. However, in a motion (via THR) filed on behalf of Netflix, Legendary Pictures, original Enola Holmes author, Nancy Springer, and the movie's writer Jack Thorne and director Harry Bradbeer, attorney Nicolas Jampol, argues that ideas and emotions are not subject to copyright. The motion reads in part...

Sherlock Holmes is traditionally portrayed as a somewhat emotionless, analytical creature. The version played by Henry Cavill in Enola Holmes is certainly a warmer person than we usually see in TV and the movies. While that might be the case, the defendants are arguing that the character of Sherlock Holmes is in the public domain, and as such, specific nuances of the character, like his emotions are not subject to copyright.

The suit also goes a step further and claims violation of the Sherlock Holmes trademark, arguing that by calling the film Enola Holmes, there is an implication that the movie is endorsed by the Conan Doyle Estate. To that, the defendants argue that the estate of Conon Doyle is trying to use trademark law incorrectly, to do what copyright law is designed to do, but in this case cannot because of the previously mentioned public domain issue....

This will certainly be an interesting case as it could have long term implications on copyright and trademark law, both for Sherlock Holmes specifically as well as other fictional characters that are either in the public domain, or may be about to be so.

Netflix has come a hell of a long way in the last 15 years. It used to be that people would think about the company as that service that mails you rented Blu-rays and DVDs in red envelopes, but now it is not only the biggest streaming service in the world, but also regularly produces some absolutely massive original films. The company has grown to become a powerhouse in Hollywood, and that’s very much continued through 2020 with a slate of awesome Netflix movies including hits like Da 5 Bloods, Enola Holmes, and The Old Guard.

Da 5 Bloods

While there is no denying the power of the big screen, Netflix has managed to get some of the greatest filmmakers of all time to produce original movies, and this past summer we saw a perfect example with the release of Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods. It’s an epic story about a group of Black Vietnam War veterans (Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis, and Isiah Whitlock Jr.) who travel back to the South Pacific with two goals in mind: find and lay to rest the body of their fallen squad leader (Chadwick Boseman) and recover a lost, hidden treasure. It’s a powerful and emotional cinematic experience, and one only made more powerful following Boseman’s passing in August.

The Trial Of The Chicago 7

Courtroom dramas appear few and far between in modern Hollywood (perhaps a side effect of decades of Law & Order?), but there are few in the world that can construct that kind of story quite like A Few Good Men’s Aaron Sorkin, and with his second directorial effort the filmmaker does a brilliant job bringing to screen one of the 20th century’s most notorious cases. The Trial Of The Chicago 7 features not only passionate writing and excellent performances from stars like Sacha Baron Cohen, Mark Rylance, Eddie Redmayne, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, but also has arrived at a time when it’s incredibly socially relevant to what’s happening in the world.

The Old Guard

With memories of Aeon Flux having dissipated, Charlize Theron has become respected as one of the industry’s most excellent ass-kicking heroes, from Atomic Blonde to Mad Max: Fury Road, and in 2020 she only further bolstered her record with the release of Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Old Guard – a badass action film centering on a team of immortals secretly moving through the world and trying to contribute the most good possible. She’s joined by some fantastic co-stars including KiKi Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, and considering that sequel talks have already begun, you should do yourself a favor and start obsessing now.

I'm Thinking Of Ending Things

If you’re ever looking for a film that can totally turn your brain into a pretzel, the works of Charlie Kaufman are a great resource, and I’m Thinking Of Ending Things is one of his best movies in that regard. It starts out with a premise that’s simple enough, following a girlfriend (Jessie Buckley) and boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) as they travel to have dinner at the boyfriend’s parent’s house, but before too long things start to spin out in surrealist absurdity, and it successfully manages to be both comedic and horrific. It’s a winner, and a perfect Netflix release in that once it’s over you can immediately go back through it to parse all the details and analyze the hell out of it.

The Lovebirds

When the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down, Michael Showalter’s The Lovebirds was one of the first movies to shift from theatrical plans to streaming, as Netflix purchased distribution from Paramount, and we’re incredibly happy that happened because it means that the comedy now exists on a platform to be enjoyed over and over again. Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae make an excellent comedic duo playing an on-the-rocks couple who find themselves having a seriously crazy night when a man claiming to be a police officer commandeers their car and uses it to carry out a murder. It’s one of the funniest films of the year so far.

Enola Holmes

On paper, the idea of telling a story from the perspective of Sherlock Holmes’ teenage sister seems like a way for filmmakers to simply continue to exploit the legacy of the public domain detective, but that just makes Harry Bradbeer’s Enola Holmes that much more enchanting. Millie Bobby Brown delivers the most charismatic performance of her young career thus far playing the title role, and the material is sharp and well-constructed, giving the teenage girl a fun mystery to solve and plenty of her own agency in the rapidly changing Victorian era.

The Willoughbys

It’s always a bit of fun to see dark humor make its way into the animated film realm, and Kris Pearn, Cory Evans, and Rob Lodermeier's The Willoughbys is most definitely a standout in that realm in 2020. Based on the Lois Lowry book of the same name, it centers on a group of brothers and sisters who become fed up with their emotionally abusive and terrible parents and create a plan that will send them on what is hopefully a deadly adventure. It’s kooky and weird, and at times hilarious, and sports an excellent voice cast including Will Forte, Maya Rudolph, Terry Crews, Martin Short, Jane Krakowski, and Ricky Gervais.

Uncorked

The story of a son who forgoes taking over the family business in hopes of blazing his own trail in life is one that audiences have seen play out time and time again in cinematic history – but what ultimately matters when it comes to plots like that is execution, and Prentice Penny’s Uncorked is delightful. In this particular case it’s the tale of a young man (Mamoudou Athie) who pursues a dream of becoming a master sommelier, much to the chagrin of his barbeque restaurant-owning father (Courtney B. Vance), and in addition to bucking a number of tropes and takes some surprising turns, it’s an emotional, engaging, and intimate story that features wonderful performances from the leads.

A Shaun The Sheep Movie: Farmageddon

In 2015, Shaun The Sheep Movie turned out to be an absolutely lovely surprise, telling a beautifully animated, dialogue-less story about life on a farm, and its sequel, Will Becher and Richard Phelan's A Shaun The Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, matches it. This time around there is a peculiar alien with strange powers roaming around that makes things quite a bit weird, and the results are laugh-out-loud funny and even a bit emotional.

Project Power

With Marvel Studios being forced to sit out 2020, the year has featured far fewer superhero movies than normal, but Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman's Project Power proved to be a nice substitute this summer – albeit operating on a much, much smaller scale. The film features a tight, awesome, high concept plot that explores what would happen if there was a new drug on the streets of New Orleans that provided users with 15 minutes of random superpowers, and it sports an outstanding cast including Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Its scope prevents the film from fully exploring its biggest ideas in its 114 minute runtime, but that also just means that there are a lot of exciting directions to go in a sequel.

Rebecca

If you’re scrolling through Netflix unsure of exactly what it is that you want to watch, Ben Wheatley’s Rebecca is a pretty damn solid choice in that it covers a lot of genre bases – going from being a romantic drama, to a haunted house horror movie, to a crime thriller. The movie has some big shoes to fill by being a remake of material previously adapted by Alfred Hitchcock, but it’s well-made and beautifully shot in addition to featuring impressive performances from Lily James, Armie Hammer, and Kristin Scott-Thomas.

Extraction

Arriving on Netflix in late April, Sam Hargrave’s Extraction proved to be tremendous medicine for those concerned that 2020 would wind up being devoid of big action blockbusters, as the film is basically 117 minutes of action. Tyler Rake is one of the most exciting heroes portrayed by Chris Hemsworth outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and some of the sequences featured are just down-right impressive, including a 12 minute long chase constructed with multiple battle locations and no obvious cuts. And like the case with The Old Guard and Project Power, it very much looks like the film will prove to be only chapter one of a longer series.

Netflix’s recent hit, Enola Holmes, features a number of names we already know now as updated iterations of the family of Sherlock Holmes. Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown leads the pack as the famed detective’s sister, Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill is Sherlock and The Hunger Games’ Sam Chaflin plays his brother Mycroft. But the film also introduces a young star into the mix: 17-year-old Louis Partridge, who's played Lord Tewkesbury and is the object of Enola’s affection.

Well… not quite yet. But the chemistry between the two teens was definitely there, as they dodged the hit on his head and Enola solved ciphers to solve the mystery of her mother’s disappearance. By the end of Enola Holmes, Tewkesbury asks Enola to stay with him and his family and lovingly kisses her wrist. According to Louis Partridge, the movie originally featured more affection between the pair at the end. In his words:

There you have it. If you were sensing a little more magnetism between the two young Enola Holmes characters, you’d be right. It sounds like Louis Partridge was originally going to kiss the cheek of Millie Bobby Brown per the script but, on set they decided to tease the audience a little with an open-ended future between them. Partridge continued his interview with Girlfriend here:

It was a solid choice for Enola Holmes to make. Enola and Tewksbury’s relationship is adorable enough without the pair showing affection for one another in the Netflix movie. Their romantic tension is clear through their interactions, but it may including a kiss at the end may have caused things to feel a bit forced.

Plus, the final moments of Enola Holmes leave a number of loose ends for the audience, hopefully signaling a coming sequel for the series. Enola is based on a series of books after all, and there’s another mystery already lined up for Sherlock’s sister to solve should the streaming service decide to invest in another installment.

Enola Holmes became a No. 1 trending Netflix film last week and has been received well by critics and viewers. The movie’s director, Harry Bardbeer, said there are discussions to continue the story. So let’s hope it does happen so we can see where the relationship between Enola Holmes and Lord Tewkesbury goes.

Plus, a sequel would offer more opportunities for audiences to see Henry Cavill’s version of Sherlock Holmes. Wouldn’t it be sweet to see the detective have a larger role in the sequel? While we wait, check out what new movies and TV shows are coming to Netflix this month.

Enola Holmes was one of Netflix’s most successful original films to come out within the past month. It has been sitting at No. 1 on the streaming platform’s charts in the United States and many international markets since last week after being warmly received by critics and casual viewers alike. Sure, Enola Holmes was already two hours of action-packed and heartwarming cipher-solving, but we want to see more!

There's no official word on a sequel for Sherlock Holmes’ sister, but Netflix did just release two deleted scenes of Millie Bobby Brown’s Enola. Check them out below:

More clues! The four-minute video shared by Netflix following the release of some bloopers includes some small, but valuable moments that did not make the cut of Enola Holmes. The first one looks to have occurred shortly after the disappearance of Enola’s mother, Eudoria (played by Helena Bonham Carter) in the film. She is speaking with her home's housekeeper, questioning why her mom would leave on her birthday. The housekeeper talks about Eudoria being privy to keeping secrets for long before Enola’s birth.

She talks about Eudoria often doing things her own way in the small, emotional moment that leads Enola to start to use their secret flower language to discover clues. As the video reveals, only the end of the conversation is shown in the film's final cut. The first deleted scene also gives more context into Sherlock and Mycroft’s childhood. Apparently Sherlock was always running from school and Mycroft was the exact opposite.

The second deleted scene has Enola in the prim and proper dress she wears midway through the film. Still on the lookout for clues, the cut scene has Millie Bobby Brown’s character venturing into another London hideout where she finds Women’s Suffrage flyers and a stick of dynamite much earlier in the film. It’s a close detail that would have shown Enola catching wind of her mother’s plan much earlier on, but that was instead saved for the third act.

Both of these sequences are good puzzle pieces that could have easily been lodged into the greater puzzle, but weren’t necessarily needed within Enola Holmes. The movie ended up being a few minutes over two hours already, and certainly the filmmakers did not want to drag it longer than needed. Even so, it’s nice to see these small additions that nearly made it in.

Since Enola Holmes is based on a series of books by Nancy Springer, the possibility of a second film is definitely possible, and the events at the end of the film leave the door open for more mysteries from the young detective. Although the character decided to reject Sherlock’s proposal to mentor her and pave her own path with her last lines, we certainly hope Henry Cavill and Sam Chaflin would return with her for a sequel as well.

Netflix’s Enola Holmes had a bit of an uphill battle. Not only did Millie Bobby Brown need to get out of Sherlock Holmes’ shadow, but she also had to convince viewers that Enola was worthy successor to her brother’s legacy. Though Enola Holmes has its flaws, I think it succeeded in both regards. Millie Bobby Brown gave a charming performance, carried the movie and made the story her own.

Since she’s conquered that and set her own course, it would be great to give Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes a bigger role in Enola Holmes 2. His character mostly had a supporting role in the new Netflix movie, but the next movie needs to spotlight him more. Here’s why, and be warned, there are SPOILERS AHEAD!

The End Teased That He’d Play A Larger Role

Perhaps the most obvious reason Henry Cavill should have a bigger role in Enola Holmes 2 is the simple fact that Enola Holmes is only sixteen and needs a guardian. At the beginning of the first movie, Mycroft Holmes takes Enola on as his ward and looks to raise Enola very differently than her mother, wanting her to conform to society as a lady. This doesn’t go over well with Enola.

By the end of the movie, Enola Holmes finds her mother, but her mother is busy with other matters. So Sherlock Holmes decides to take over guardianship of Enola, causing Mycroft to relinquish control.

With that in mind, it would be pretty strange if Henry Cavill didn’t play a bigger role in his sister’s life in a sequel. It would also be a missed opportunity to develop their relationship further, something I think Sherlock Holmes fans would like to see.

They Should Build Sherlock And Enola’s Relationship

At the beginning of Enola Holmes, Sherlock has been away and is mostly emotionally removed from his sister. They only have a few moments together, and while these moments are small, you could see that both share admiration for each other.

As the story progresses, Sherlock Holmes sees Enola's potential as a talented sleuth, especially when she beats him to the punch. This arc has real promise and shouldn’t be left to the wayside.

Enola Holmes 2 should build their relationship further rather than ignore it. This could play out in a number of different ways, but whatever avenue the filmmakers went down, Sherlock’s increasing involvement would make subsequent movies far more interesting.

The fear might be that if they give Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes a bigger role, he would overshadow Enola. But I don’t think that would be the case. Enola’s character is far more charismatic and interesting in this story, so she'd still be the focal point.

Sherlock Holmes Is A Prominent Antagonist In The Books

In Enola Holmes, Mycroft Holmes largely plays the antagonistic brother who demands Enola Holmes to conform to society. Sherlock, on the other hand, is aloof and hands off responsibility to his brother. However, in the original books, Sherlock is also one of Enola Holmes’ primary antagonists.

He is often portrayed as a sexist and doesn’t have a high opinion of his sister. She frequently tries to flee from him as he wants to find her and send her away to boarding school where she can learn to be a lady.

In the movie, Henry Cavill’s Sherlock seemed more open-minded and compassionate, but since there’s precedence from the books that he plays a formidable role as an antagonist, shouldn’t that play out in the movies as well? He doesn’t have to be an antagonist like Mycroft, but he could still be an adversary to Enola Holmes (more on that later).

Henry Cavill’s Humble Sherlock Makes Him Likable

Perhaps one of the best parts about Henry Cavill’s Sherlock is his character arc and humility. This is in direct contrast to Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch’s respective versions of Sherlock. They delivered arrogant and eccentric takes on the character that, while entertaining, were also oftentimes off-putting, disagreeable and annoying.

Despite having little screen time, Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes still has his own character arc. In the beginning, he is mostly aloof, too busy with his own matters. But by the end of the story, he learns a thing or two about how he was wrong to ignore his sister and decides to take care of her instead.

It’s his humility that highlights this Sherlock's likability. This is shown primarily when he discovers that Enola solved the mystery before he did. Rather than let his pride get the better of him and become angry with her, he let out a delighted laugh. This small gesture revealed a likable part of his character; Henry Cavill's Sherlock is humble enough to admit he was bested by his own little sister and be totally okay with it. If that’s not likable, I don’t know what is.

Pitting Enola Against Sherlock Would Make The Sequel More Exciting

The Enola Holmes filmmakers missed an opportunity to highlight a competition between Enola and Sherlock. It was there, but they buried the lede. It felt like an afterthought rather than a present, active conflict between the two characters.

In Enola Holmes 2, they absolutely should pit Enola and Sherlock up against each other as they try to solve a mystery. This could be as easy as the two disagreeing on where the clues lead, how to solve them and who the list of suspects could be. It could go as far as having Sherlock Holmes disagreeing with Enola so much that he tries to stop her from pursuing her leads.

This kind of conflict would also provide two awesome storytelling opportunities. First, the conflict could create an iron-sharpens-iron situation where Sherlock and Enola’s relationship grows through conflict. Second, the conflict would stretch Enola’s character and push her detective skills, something I think we all can agree would be fun to watch.

I'll admit, we don’t know if we’re getting Enola Holmes 2. Still, considering its success on Netflix, there’s always a good chance it could happen. The director seems interested in pursuing it and admitted there have been sequel discussions. For now though, nothing has been confirmed yet, but if Netflix decides to move forward with a sequel, I think it behooves the streaming service to give its audience more Sherlock. Netflix has been crushing it lately with its original films. From Extraction to The Old Guard to Project Power, there’s been a slew of new releases that have become big hits. Now its latest release Enola Holmes is having a success story of its own. As such, Henry Cavill shared a fun new video thanking the fans.

After a big win, it’s not uncommon for movie stars to take to social media and give a big thank you to the fans. Since the fans are a big reason for a movie’s success, it only makes sense they’d get a little praise. In that light, Henry Cavill took to social media to highlight the new movie’s big achievements. Enola Holmes has certainly made a big splash on Netflix. By ranking #1 on Netflix’s Top Ten charts and getting mostly rave reviews from critics and fans alike, it’s easily another big win for the streaming giant, which also means another win for fans of the mystery series. And as such, Netflix subscribers are a big part of the movie's success.

Henry Cavill is Best known as Superman from Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League, and played Sherlock Holmes in Enola Holmes. Enola Holmes is the main character, while Henry Cavill plays a supporting role as Sherlock, primarily acting as a background character that Enola Holmes looks up to during her adventures.

As seen in the video, Enola Holmes received high marks at Rotten Tomatoes. But what have critics been saying about it? By and large, many critics seem to think Millie Bobby Brown’s performance anchors the movie even when the story leaves something to be desired. CinemaBlend’s own Eric Eisenberg rated it 3 ½ stars in his review and said:

Enola Holmes is about Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes’ little sister, Enola, who has been raised by her mother while Sherlock and Mycroft have left the estate. When her mother disappears, Enola ventures out to find her and stumbles upon another mystery involving a runaway lord. And plenty of fourth-wall breaking adventures ensue.

With so much success, it’s easy to start dreaming of a potential sequel. Plus, that ending certainly leaves a possible sequel wide open. While there’s no confirmed sequel as of yet, Enola Holmes’ director Harry Bradbeer said he would love if a sequel would happen and that there’s “a discussion.” But, one issue that might complicate things is the current lawsuit that has been filed against the movie.

Is it fair to say Henry Cavill can work any look at this point? Aside from being picture perfect in a Superman suit, the Justice League actor has proved it again and again. I’m also talking about his long white mane in The Witcher and that time he made building a gaming computer in a tank top an erotic affair. And most recently, he let his curls run wild for his Sherlock Holmes role in the Netflix hit, Enola Holmes.

Though as you can imagine, looking that good takes hours at the gym, and spandex is far from the most comfy type of clothing to have on for long days on set. Now, Cavill has discussed why his suit for Enola Holmes wasn’t any easier to slide into:

While speaking to Collider, Cavill admitted that his period-accurate three piece suits may have actually been worse than Superman’s costume. I’ve never really thought about this before, but it’s true. Rarely do we see muscled-up men in Victorian clothing in movies like Enola Holmes. Men of this status and era certainly didn’t have a gym to go to or do much heavy lifting for that matter. Sherlock’s pacing around London with Watson certainly doesn’t measure up to Superman size.

Even so, we’re delighted Henry Cavill was cast in support of Millie Bobby Brown’s leading role. It’s certainly a more affectionate version of the detective than we’ve ever seen, as it's told through the eyes of his younger sister, Enola. This shift for the Sherlock story led Conan Doyle’s estate to actually sue Netflix for giving Sherlock feelings.

When Cavill was asked about the lawsuit, he said that was above his pay grade. Though he has offered insight into the process of crafting his character, which he explained was initially more emotional than what was placed in the final product. Cavill and the filmmakers wanted to tap into his own experiences and connections with his family. But as he said:

Aside from nailing his looks, Cavill taking on a handful of iconic characters over the years has been a sincere pleasure because of the depth he brings to them through his performances. He’s already throwing his martini glass in the ring for James Bond as well, after being nominated by the internet.

The latest exploration of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes canon is playing on Netflix now, only rather than Sherlock standing in the spotlight yet again, it’s his and Mycroft’s younger sister, Enola, who’s getting the attention. Nevertheless, both Holmes siblings play key supporting roles in Enola Holmes, with Sherlock being played by Superman actor Henry Cavill.

However, shortly before Enola Holmes was released on Netflix, the movie found itself in a bit of a pickle. Back in June, Arthur Conan Doyle’s estate sued the streaming service, claiming that because Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes is more emotional in Enola Holmes, this constitutes a copyright infringement of Doyle’s final 10 Sherlock stories, as opposed to Cavill’s Sherlock being based on the character from the author’s earlier tales featuring the detective, which are in the public domain.

During a recent interview with GQ, Henry Cavill was asked to provide his thoughts on this Enola Holmes legal messiness. Here’s how he responded:

Maybe if Henry Cavill had been a producer on Enola Holmes, he would have had a take to share about the movie’s current legal predicament. But as an actor, he did his job bringing his version of Sherlock Holmes to life, and he’s willing to let others deal with the legal response that came out several months before Enola Holmes hit Netflix. That said, when it was noted how this must be the first time someone has been sued for damages because of their acting, Cavill simply said that “nothing surprises him anymore.”

We’ll just have to wait and see how this Enola Holmes lawsuit shakes out, although it is worth noting that the movie is based off the first installment of author Nancy Spinger’s book series, and those stories were never subject to legal complaints years ago. In any case, among the defendants named in this current suit are Springer, director Harry Bradbeer and writer Jack Thorne.

As for how Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes came to be, the actor recently explained how it was a result of trial and error, and that we actually could have seen this Sherlock behaving more emotionally compared to what was shown in the final product. In his words:

Evidently Henry Cavill and the rest of the cast and crew’s efforts have paid off, as Enola Holmes has earned a lot of positive reception. With five other books in Nancy Springer’s original book series, Netflix could certainly keep the Enola Holmes train going, which Harry Bradbeer certainly sounds game for. And while obviously Millie Bobby Brown’s eponymous character would continue to be the star of the show, there’d also be plenty of opportunities to make Cavill’s Sherlock stand out even more.

Enola Holmes is a delightfully refreshing take on the Sherlock Holmes title, isn’t it? Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown stars as the sister of the famed detective along with producing what has quickly become a popular title on Netflix. Between the fourth-wall breaking Phoebe Waller-Bridge famously did on Fleabag, clever cipher decoding with the secret flower language Enola and her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) use and Henry Cavill’s perfect curls, there’s a lot to love about the movie. But did you catch everything that went down at the end? It’s not exactly Elementary, my dear.

There’s a lot that happened at the end of Enola Holmes before the credits roll and it's too much fun to skip discussing! Plus, we’ll get into the clues that have us believing this won’t be the last time Millie Bobby Brown’s headstrong detective wink our way on our televisions. Obviously, spoilers ahead! Let’s get into it:

What Happens At The End Of Enola Holmes

Enola Holmes is centrally about the disappearance of her mother, Eudoria, which leads Enola to reconnect with her estranged brothers Sherlock and Mycroft and solve her first case. While Sherlock is following his own trail after Eudoria on his own, Enola follows a series of ciphers to find her. In the process, Enola gets in the middle of a political controversy when she meets Louis Partridge’s Tewkesbury. As the two teens meet, Lord Tewkesbury begins being hunted by a mysterious assassin, Burn Gorman’s Linthorn.

Beginning with Tewkesbury’s hitman problem, the pair confront Linthorn, who Enola successfully takes down. But then, out of the shadows comes the master of the plot, his grandmother, who catches them off guard and shoots him. Thankfully, Tewkesbury thought on his feet and placed a metal breast plate underneath his clothing moments before the shot was fired. While Enola is fighting Linthorn, there’s a quick shot of Tewkesbury eyeing the metal armor, which he must subsequently have attached to himself.

As surprising as it may be for his grandmother to be behind the hit on his head, throughout Enola Holmes, Lady Tewkesbury leaves a few clues that she is not interested in the young man having a voice in the upcoming Reform Bill he’s expected to vote on. She’s a traditionalist and she wanted to do everything in her power to stop him from contributing to this vital change for a more progressive English society. At the same time, Enola has followed the ciphers straight to her mother, who as she finds out, her involvement in England’s social reform (particularly for Women’s Suffrage) is the reason for her disappearance. Eudoria did not want to involve Enola in her dangerous plans and never meant for her to follow the trail she left.

How The Case Of Missing Marquess Is Solved

Diving deeper into the reveals regarding Eudoria, what Enola finds in a number of the ciphers are secret locations for her mother’s suffrage group to meet and specifically for Limehouse Lane, the holding place for crates of explosives and other materials they plan to use to “make some noise” about their cause for equity. As seen in their reunion at the end of the film, Eudoria did not intend to involve her daughter in her seemingly destructive plan to demand justice. The money Enola found earlier in the film was likely a gift to her, rather than a call for help and some of the early ciphers were simply ways for Eudoria to communicate to Enola that she was OK.

Interestingly enough for Enola Holmes, it's she who solves both cases just before him, leaving Sherlock in absolute shock. Perhaps you could say this time it was due to the pair sharing a special cipher language together, but she also was on the ground figuring out the Lord’s hit as well. This catches the attention of Sherlock, who leaves Enola a cipher from him to solve. Sherlock would like to mentor her, but at the meeting spot Enola leaves him a pinecone, referencing back to a conversation the two had about forging one’s own path. It serves as a message to Sherlock that Enola wishes to go her own way and when he places it back on the ledge it symbolizes his blessing to do so.

At the very end of Enola Holmes, our protagonist announces to us that she has decided to be a detective in her own right, implementing her knowledge of ciphers and her intentions to be a “finder of lost souls.” She ends by saying the future is her own and “up to us,” making it more obvious that Enola is seeking to set herself apart from the classic Holmes story.

What’s Next For Enola Holmes Based On The Books

So Enola Holmes serves as a kind of origin story for the sister of Sherlock and you’re surely curious if there’s going to be more! For now, director Harry Bradbeer recently said this:

At the time of this article’s writing, Enola’s only been on the streaming service for about a week, so it makes sense that a greenlight isn’t switched on just yet. But judging by its popularity and these words from Bradbeer, we wouldn’t at all be surprised if Enola Holmes became a franchise. Plus, the Nancy Springer novels the story is based on includes six books total. So the stories are already out there and ready to be adapted!

Enola Holmes does adapt the first book in the series as well, titled The Case of the Missing Marquess. The 2008 second book is called The Case of the Left-Handed Lady, which follows Enola hiding from Sherlock in between looking for another missing woman, Lady Cecily. The lady has mysteriously disappeared and left beautiful charcoal drawings behind. It certainly sounds like Enola Holmes has an exciting sequel (and four more) ready to be made already.

Millie Bobby Brown’s latest adventure in Netflix’s Enola Holmes has a unique sense of whimsy and optimism that couldn’t be more different than her other show Stranger Things. Still, she seems to find common ground between these shows, especially with the film’s inspiring last line. And she's made this connection known.

Since her breakout role in Stranger Things, Millie Bobby Brown has been part of a new wave of young, up-and-coming actors taking Hollywood by storm, including many of her Stranger Things co-stars. In Enola Holmes, her character says the hopeful last line, “The future is up to us,” which she tells Cosmopolitan, speaks to her generation:

This is understandable. It seems wherever you turn there’s some sort of role model, actor, or celebrity caught up in some kind of controversy. For Millie Bobby Brown and her generation, finding a role model may seem like a daunting, nigh-impossible task. And as a result, they might be more independent.

However, Millie Bobby Brown said later, that doesn’t give her an excuse to sit and do nothing. She feels compelled to act as she said later,

At least in Enola Holmes’ case, Millie Bobby Brown may already be changing things. Rather than focusing on Sherlock Holmes, the movie takes a different approach and follows his younger sister as she solves the mystery of her mother’s disappearance and the threat on a young Lord’s life. For Enola Holmes co-star Helena Bonham Carter, this was exactly the change we needed and loved the idea of focusing on Sherlock’s sister, instead. She thought the original Sherlock Holmes was a misogynist, making Enola Holmes the perfect way to fight back.

The future looks bright for Enola Holmes, receiving mostly glowing reviews from critics. CinemaBlend’s own Eric Eisenberg in his review gave it 3 ½ stars and said:

Millie Bobby Brown will continue to be a young star to watch. She’ll be returning to the fourth season of Stranger Things and has a few other movies lined up, including Godzilla vs. Kong. For news on this and more, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

The reviews for the new Netflix film, Enola Holmes, which focuses on a previously unknown member of the Holmes family, are pretty solid. By all accounts, including my own, it's a fun little movie that most will probably enjoy watching. However, I'm not sure anybody is going to have quite as much fun watching it as the cast apparently had making it. A new blooper reel has been dropped online by co-star Henry Cavill that shows that there was much laughter on the set.

The video opens up with one of the more tense scenes in Enola Holmes, where the title heroine and her friend are running from somebody trying to apprehend them both. However, in the video posted to Instagram, we see that this take was not quite as serious as it appears as it ends in a much funnier way than the actual film. Also, So. Much. Flossing. Check it out.

I mean, don't get me wrong, Millie Bobby Brown has than dance down pat and she is quite capable of doing it much faster than I've seen anybody else attempt. And honestly, what else does one do with themself between takes? This seems like as good a way to pass the time as any.

Much was made of Henry Cavill's hair in the lead up to the release of Enola Holmes. And honestly, who's shocked by this, I mean look at it? However, in at least one scene it appears that the hair was giving the actor some trouble. Beyond that, there's a lot of laughing, mostly from the 16-year-old lead actress who clearly had a good time making this movie.

I think my favorite bit has to be when Millie Bobby Brown forgets she has her glasses on. I can't tell if this was from a rehearsal and she just didn't want to break her glasses, or if she literally forgot she had them on and was about to film a scene wearing them, but either way, it's great.

Having said that, the highlight is probably still the opening blooper. I could watch Louis Partridge crack his head on that windowsill all day long. I think I will...

It's fairly clear from watching Enola Holmes that it was a fun movie to make. While the movie isn't without its serious moments and has some remarkably dramatic and mature elements, it is largely a lighthearted adventure, and part of the reason it works so well is probably that the cast never forgot to have fun while on the set.

British actor Henry Cavill has become a household name over the past few years, in no small part due to his role as Superman in the DC Extended Universe. Man of Steel was the first installment of the property, and Cavill's performance as the last son of Krypton has been praised. Recently Cavill took on some more iconic roles in Netflix projects as protagonist Geralt in The Witcher and Sherlock in Enola Holmes. The latter movie arrived on the streaming service just last week, and Cavill has explained why playing the iconic detective was more "freeing" than Superman and Geralt.

Henry Cavill's career has been booming over the past few years, but the 37 year-old actor has also been tasked with playing some truly beloved characters. Each of these roles likely comes with its own pressure, although Cavill admits that playing Sherlock in Enola Holmes was a different experience. He recently spoke to the pressure of Geralt and Superman, saying:

In many ways Henry Cavill's career has included a slew of dream roles. But because his roles are so beloved by the public, Cavill feels the added pressure to nail it on set. This pressure includes his own expectations, as the actor was a fan of both Geralt and Superman ahead of adapting them into live-action on film.

Henry Cavill's comments to Collider help to show what it's really like to work on projects like Batman v Superman or The Witcher. While the actor makes it look easy on screen, he's still a regular guy who can be nervous over working on such high profile sets. But by contrast, Cavill admits he didn't feel that same pressure during Enola Holmes. Namely because he wasn't a huge Sherlock fan. As he explained,

While Sherlock Holmes is a character that has had more years entertaining audiences than even Superman, Henry Cavill himself wasn't someone who grew up reading the iconic detective's adventures. As such, the actor didn't have to worry about being pitch perfect or ultra-accurate. And in that way he was able to play while filming Netflix's Enola Holmes.

Henry Cavill's performance as Sherlock is just one of the aspects of Enola Holmes that has been praised since its release on Netflix. Cavill plays a supporting role in the streaming adventure, as he attempts to track down Millie Bobby Brown's title character. The movie faired well critically, and has been trending on Netflix since its release.

As for Geralt and Superman, all eyes are on what will come next for Henry Cavill's other two iconic roles. The Witcher will get a second season on Netflix, although the show recently did some re-casting due to the delay in filming. Cavill has also been open about wanting to return to the DCEU, but there's no telling when.

Like Peter Pan and King Arthur, Sherlock Holmes will forever recur in popular culture not only because he’s a timeless character, but also because he is both iconic and in the public domain. Anyone who chooses to can write a story about the great detective and his experiences solving unsolvable mysteries, and so it seems that as soon as the latest one is released, the clock is just reset as audiences wait for the next to come down the pike.

With this context provided, it’s pretty easy to roll one’s eyes at Harry Bradbeer’s Enola Holmes. Hearing the basic set up instantly has you imagining a stereotypical Hollywood pitch meeting where an excited young executive explains to a room veteran colleagues that Sherlock Holmes is totally whack now, and that the new millennium is ready for Sherlock’s spunky teenage sister played by one of the Stranger Things kids. It really does have a Poochie-esque whiff to it – but know that dismissing it is judging a book by its cover. It may seem like a silly little Netflix movie, but in truth it’s an engaging and cute mystery that features Millie Bobby Brown’s most charismatic performances to date.

Rather than being a Hollywood board room creation, Enola Holmes is in actuality based on the first book in a series by author Nancy Springer, and serves as an origin story for the young eponymous protagonist (Millie Bobby Brown), who is the much younger sister of Mycroft (Sam Claflin) and Sherlock (Henry Cavill). Being more than a decade apart in age, Enola and her brothers lives don’t really line up at all, but she has had a lovely adolescence all the same – raised and homeschooled by her single mother, Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter).

This sibling relationship changes one day, however, when Enola wakes up one morning to discover that Eudoria is gone – leaving nothing but a few parting gifts. The teenager makes the call to Mycroft and Sherlock for help, but when the former attempts to take legal guardianship and send her off to a boarding school, she instead opts to make an escape of her own and make her way from the family’s home to London.

While in the fast-paced and foreign city, Enola works to not only find her missing mother, but also must deal with the consequences of aiding a young lord names Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge) as he too tries to escape the clutches of his family – embroiling herself in a mystery at the same time.

Enola Holmes lets Millie Bobby Brown smile, and it’s fantastic.

Enola Holmes has a few dark turns and a handful of emotional and dramatic moments, but what’s easily most striking about the film is just how joyful Millie Bobby Brown is in the lead role. It’s not all that common for Eleven to crack a smile on Stranger Things, and the action in Godzilla: King of the Monsters starts so fast that we don’t really get to see her character as a normal kid. Watching Enola scramble around in different costumes searching for clues is a new mode for Brown, and a delightful one that demonstrates excellent hidden range.

Audiences will certainly recognize shades of Enola’s big brother in her deduction skills and quick thinking, but she also very much stands independently from her sibling in both energy and story. After all, very different things are expected of a young lady in Victorian England, and there is a great joy watching Brown deflect and ignore societal norms in favor of pursuing her goals and passions.

The mystery at the heart of Enola Holmes isn’t mind-blowing, but excusable.

It’s easy to appreciate Enola Holmes as a family film that is legitimately for the whole family, though there remains the drawback that come from a four quadrant mystery: the plot isn’t given any allowance to be legitimately complex. The movie does play with mature themes that rise naturally out of the story being told, but it also totally telegraphs all of its answers to anyone who has experience watching these kinds of movies and knows all of the tropes to look for.

That being said, the plot is far from stupid and certainly doesn’t feel dumbed down; it’s just simple, and that’s fine. At the end of it all it very much feels like a stepping stone to a series, and that means that there is the potential for complexity to escalate as the movies mature along with the young audience. In that sense, Enola Holmes is exactly what it needs to be.

From Nancy Drew to Harriet The Spy to Veronica Mars, there is a wonderful tradition of young female detectives that Netflix’s new film builds on, and it’s great to see it carry on. Enola Holmes is a character that seems destined to become a target of obsession, and what it shows as far as Millie Bobby Brown’s potential is equally exciting.

Over the years, Sherlock Holmes has had many faces, most recently Robert Downey Jr. in the Sherlock Holmes movies and Benedict Cumberbatch in the Sherlock TV series. Now, Henry Cavill is stepping into those big shoes but, with Netflix’s Enola Holmes, the focus has shifted toward his younger sister, an idea that co-star Helena Bonham Carter loved.

Helena Bonham Carter plays Sherlock, Mycroft and Enola's mother, Eudoria Holmes, an off-beat mom who raises Enola in ways that differ from what 19th-century society teaches. Of course, you couldn’t have a movie about the Holmes family without Sherlock, himself. In this movie, Henry Cavill portrays the famous detective and does a surprisingly different take from his predecessors. Still, even though he’s in the movie, he only makes brief appearances, and Enola Holmes still holds the spotlight.

Enola Holmes is a fourth-wall-breaking mystery starring Millie Bobbie Brown and focuses on the main character's efforts to find her missing mother. Meanwhile, Enola Holmes stumbles upon another mystery involving a young Lord and tries to solve both before her brother finds her.

But has it made a big enough splash to be an effective fight against focusing so much on Sherlock? So far, all signs seem to be pointing to a resounding yes. Critical reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with some, by and large, having fallen in love with the movie.

Whenever a movie does well, people naturally wonder if there will be a sequel. At this point, there’s no firm confirmation on whether or not an Enola Holmes 2 is coming, but Harry Bradbeer has admitted that there’s have been discussions, which, for fans of this movie, could still be promising news. Netflix’s new movie, Enola Holmes, asks us to view one of the most famous characters in history -- Sherlock Holmes -- through a decidedly unique lens. Showing a kinder, gentler Sherlock is certainly an intriguing premise, and it’s one that has left some fans wanting more. That, naturally, means many of us are wondering if we can expect a sequel any time soon. According to the film’s director, there may be hope.

Enola Holmes has been a hit with critics thus far, many of whom found the Netflix film to be a refreshing take on the world inhabited by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective. Though some wished the film focused more on the mysteries we’re used to seeing in Sherlock Holmes stories, others commended star Millie Bobby Brown’s portrayal of his sister. Fans and critics appreciated how the film focused on her experience as a young woman at the turn of the 20th century, and on some of the societal issues that often get overlooked in other Sherlock Holmes adaptations.

Those who watched Enola Holmes and wanted more could be in for some good news. When Decider asked Harry Bradbeer about the prospect of an Enola Holmes sequel, the director offered an optimistic outlook:

So it sounds like there’s nothing concrete yet but that there definitely could be something in the works. Harry Bradbeer also told Decider that he believes there’s a lot of lingering issues for the Holmes siblings -- including Sam Claflin’s Mycroft, the eldest brother -- to still resolve. He said that in addition to exploring the family’s dysfunctions, he’d also like to lean into historical accuracy and shine a light on some of the human rights issues that took place during that time period. In other words, it seems as though he has some idea of how to proceed if Netflix does give a sequel a green light.

If a new Enola Holmes film does come to fruition, it’s not clear when that can happen -- as the cast have other Netflix commitments. Henry Cavill is working on the second season of The Witcher, with a third season likely. And while season five of Stranger Things isn’t a sure thing, it seems pretty likely, which means Millie Bobby Brown could be pretty busy, too. If that’s the case, when we meet Enola Holmes again, she may be a bit older, though there’s surely still a range of stories and topics the film could cover.

The new Netflix movie Enola Holmes brings together one of the most iconic names in literature, with a quite impressive cast. Millie Bobby Brown of Stranger Things plays the lead and Superman himself, Henry Cavill plays the World's Greatest Detective, Sherlock Holmes. With a duo like that, it's no wonder that Sam Claflin, who plays Sherlock's older brother Mycroft, felt slightly intimidated.

Sam Claflin apparently had to deal with a couple of different problems while working on the set of Enola Holmes. First, there was the problem of being cast as Sherlock Holmes' older brother, when Claflin is actually three years younger than Henry Cavill who plays Sherlock. As Claflin told Yahoo, he felt a little bad about that, apparently because somebody thought he looked like he was much older than Cavill. Then there was the fact that he had to share scenes with two actors who have achieved a pretty significant level of fame due to playing very popular characters. As Claflin explained...

Sam Claflin has certainly had his share of significant movie roles. He had a major role in a Pirates of the Caribbean film and he was part of the Hunger Games franchise, but it's certainly true that he hasn't done anything that's become quite the pop culture phenomenon as Henry Cavill's Superman or Millie Bobby Brown's Eleven. And honestly, is there any way you could not be intimidated by Henry Cavill's hair alone? It makes me feel inferior and I'm just watching the movie.

Although, in this case, since Mycroft Holmes is essentially playing third fiddle to Enola and Sherlock, Sam Claflin suggests that position actually worked out for the movie itself. Within traditional Holmes canon Mycroft Holmes is the smarter of the two Holmes brothers in the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but he's generally lacking in Sherlock's energy and has little desire to do any of the actual work involved in Sherlock's line of work. Of course, Mycroft is generally described as being fairly soft and overweight from his lack of movement, so if nothing else Sam Claflin maybe the sexiest Mycroft ever put on screen.

While Sam Claflin may have felt slightly inferior, it appears from most reviews that the trio makes Enola Holmes work quite well. It may not be the smartest movie ever made with the Holmes name attached, the new Netflix production is generally being viewed as a lot of fun, and right now, is there really anything anybody needs more than a bit of fun?

Millie Bobby Brown has a ton of fans right now, with her gorgeous performance as Eleven in Stranger Things has given her the ability to work on major film projects. Elona Holmes is a bonafide star vehicle for the young actress, as well as another collaboration with Netflix. NPR's review from Glen Weldon praises the performance of Millie Bobby Brown, saying:

Leading a movie is challenging for any actor, and Millie Bobby Brown's Enola Holmes performance also required her to frequently break the fourth wall and narrate. And while this is a bold choice that doesn't always pay off, it sounds like she really rises to the occasion. Plus, she's paired with a strong supporting cast to work with.

Sherlock Holmes has been adapted for TV and film countless times, so there's a certain expectation when it comes to new releases. According to EW's Maureen Lee Lenker, Enola Holmes manages to overcome this burden, and bring something new to the table. As she put it,

Of course, Enola Holmes hasn't been without some criticism from reviews out there. The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw felt that Harry Bradbeer's new Netflix release was lacking one key aspect of the property: the title character solving mysteries and problems. He explained this gripe with:

I smell a sequel. After all, Netflix has starting producing bonafide franchises on the streaming service. We'll just have to see of Enola Holmes is popular enough to get this treatment. The Associated Press' Lindsey Bahr addressed this possibility, while also taking umbrage with some of the writing and lack of a female voice. She said,

By contrast some critics seemed to find Enola Holmes' messaging more empowering. THR's review by John DeFore praised both Millie Bobby Brown's performance, and how the title character was brought into the pre-existing universe that fans know and love. As he explained,

Enola Holmes is sure to be compared to various other adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, as well as mystery movies as a whole. Variety's Peter Debruge made some comparisons, while also asserting that Netflix's latest release has something new to offer. The review reads,

We'll just have to see how Netflix subscribers around the world take to Enola Holmes. While the critical response was largely positive, it's more than possible that there will be a discrepancy with audience response. Moviegoers can judge for themselves, as the movie is now streaming in its entirety, rather than waiting for a weekend release.

When Enola Holmes debuts on Netflix tomorrow, Henry Cavill will join a long list of esteemed actors who have played The Great Detective on film. While Sherlock Holmes is traditionally a very serious character who has little time for novelty, it seems that the set of Enola Holmes was anything but too serious. Millie Bobby Brown, who plays the title role in the new film, says there was a lot of laughing on set, so much so that she occasionally needed time to recover, whereas Cavill was always ready for the next take.

Alongside Millie Bobby Brown's Enola and Henry Cavill's Sherlock, the role of the third Holmes sibling, Mycroft, will be played by Sam Claflin. While Mycroft is traditionally portrayed as the most serious --and occasionally dull -- Holmes brother, Brown recently told GMA that he was actually quite funny on set, which led to a lot of laughter. Brown was apparently impressed by Henry Cavill's ability to transform from his laughing self to his serious character in an instant, while she sometimes needed to remove herself from the set to get ready for the next scene. We've seen countless outtakes and gag reels from movies and television that mainly consist of the cast deciding that something was incredibly funny and then not being able to stop laughing about it once the camera starts rolling. It seems that Henry Cavill doesn't usually have this problem as Millie Bobby Brown found his ability to recover when somebody said 'action" quite impressive.

Millie Bobby Brown, however, admits this is an ability she lacks. She seems to have found everything Sam Claflin did to be funny, which would sometimes for her to remove herself in order to stop laughing, and then come back in to film the scene.

Luckily, Enola Holmes wasn't a serious drama and so having some fun would likely help the movie overall. Based on the trailer, everybody looks to be having a good time, and Henry Cavill seems to have a smile on his face through most of it, so he never had to get too serious.

Well, this looks like a thoroughly delightful streaming service. Netflix subscribers have been curious to see the first footage from Enola Holmes, and the trailer did not disappoint. It looks like the title character is in for a unique adventure that will require brains, heart, and the occasional etiquette lesson. Let's break down what we're being shown here.

The first trailer for Netflix's Enola Holmes starts with the narration from Millie Bobby Brown's character, which will presumably continue throughout the course of the upcoming movie's 123 minute runtime. Enola gives the public some backstory, revealing the origin of her unique name and her loving relationship with her mother Eudoria Holmes (Helena Bonhman Carter). She learns a ton of skills in the process, which must be used when Eudoria suddenly vanishes without a trace.

Enola quickly gets to business in order to try and track down her missing matriarch, but doesn't decide to have this type of adventure alone. Instead, she's joined by her brothers Mycroft and Sherlock, played by actors Sam Claflin and Henry Cavill respectively. The latter actor's hair is particularly glorious for this movie, with waves that will no doubt look surprisingly perfect throughout the adventure.

From the moment she meets up with her brothers in Enola Holmes' trailer, it's clear that the talented title character is missing one crucial skill: how to be a lady. They admonish her appearance, calling her a "wild woman." And as a result, she runs away to continue the search for her mother. That's when the action really begins.

As Elona trains in etiquette, she meets some friends along the way. The action of the Enola Holmes trailer picks up, as Hole's iconic track "Celebrity Skin" fuels action sequences with appropriate language for Millie Bobby Brown's protagonist. She'll have to use the various skills taught by her mother to find Eudoria, with her fourth wall breaking narration helping to buoy the trailer's runtime.
