Gosling has proven to be a cheeky performer who’s full of surprises, as his recent appearance on The Tonight Show proved. And what a moment that was.

To prove that point further, Mendes candidly explained how this film transported her back to her childhood and seeing movies on the big screen. She explained:

Well, E.T. is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made, so that’s very, very high praise. However, it also speaks to the big heart Project Hail Mary could have. Much like The Martian, which is also based on one of Andy Weir’s novels, this story is grand; however, it’s also a moving and very human tale. So, if this movie is anything like the book, yes, it will be a film that the entire family should love.

Speaking to that point, Mendes addressed her bias – her husband is the star of this film – but also reiterated that she loves it for more than that reason. She wrote:

Now, Mendes has been hyping up Project Hail Mary, and she has a history of making sure she’s always supporting her partner’s projects. She had great jokes for The Fall Guy, and she brought the Kenergy for Barbie. Now, she’s making her adoration for Gosling’s newest movie known, and it’s very clear that she thinks it's absolutely fantastic.

Truly, the book it's based on is wonderful, and the first footage of the flick from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller suggests that it will be a fantastic adaptation.

When Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars movie started production on Thursday, a bunch of new names were officially added to the cast that got me hyped for the new movie. But, as you can imagine, there are more actors involved we’ve yet to learn about. One new casting rumor has already started circulating, and it would be an exciting addition to Starfighter if it proves to be true.

There’s A New Rumor About The Star Wars: Starfighter Cast

Reporter Daniel Richtman (via SFF Gazette) is claiming that Hitch actress and Ryan Gosling’s wife, Eva Mendes, will be playing the spouse of Gosling’s character in Star Wars: Starfighter. Since we don’t know how Richtman got his information, I’m definitely going to hold off from taking this report at face value, but it would be rather exciting should it be confirmed.

The first photo from Starfighter was shared from the inaugural day of production on Thursday, along with some news about the cast, but Eva Mendes was not among the names listed. After we heard that Doctor Who actor Matt Smith might play the movie’s villain, his involvement was confirmed by Lucasfilm, along with Mia Goth’s previously rumored casting.

In addition, we learned that Amy Adams is in the film alongside young actor Flynn Gray (the latter of whom is in the first photo next to Gosling). Reportedly, Adams will play the mother of Gray's character and the sister of Gosling’s character. Another big name involved in Starfighter is Aaron Pierre, who was in Rebel Ridge and Mufasa. Starfighter is being helmed by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy from a script by Jonathan Tropper.

Why I’d Be Psyched For Eva Mendes To Join The Franchise

Eva Mendes quit Hollywood over a decade ago, sharing previously that she got “tired fighting for the good roles” and deciding to focus on producing and being a mother to her and Gosling’s daughters, Esmeralda and Amada. But with Esmeralda being 10 and Amada being 9, perhaps Mendes is ready to get back out there, and doing so in the most epic way by joining her husband on his journey to a galaxy far, far away.

As many of us have been catching the summer Olympics using a Peacock subscription, Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have been turning heads. The two stars were spotted watching the 2024 Paris Games and ultimately delighting fans with a rare public outing on Sunday, August 4. The cherished Hollywood couple was seen at the Bercy Arena, immersed in the excitement of the women's uneven bars final. Their appearance not only captivated the attendees but also set social media ablaze. It regularly topped the ratings for the year during its 331-episode run and launched careers left and right. George Clooney for goodness sake! Not only did it have big stars in its regular cast like Clooney, Anthony Edwards, Maura Tierney, and Eriq LaSalle, but it also had a huge amount of guest stars and up-and-coming actors roll through the show. Bradley Whitford

A few years before the role of Josh Lyman on The West Wing would make him a star, Bradley Whitford appeared in two episodes of ER in 1995. He'd been working regularly for almost a decade at that point and would find small roles here and there for another few years before The West Wing. He's been an in-demand actor ever since. 

Kristin Davis

Before she was a regular on Melrose Place, and before she was one of Jerry's many girlfriends on Seinfeld, Kristin Davis played a woman who was very into George Clooney's character very briefly in one episode of the first season of ER. While she only showed up once on the show, it clearly opened some big doors - and big martini glasses - in the future.

Before becoming a star in High School Musical, Zac Efron was almost type-cast as a troubled teen. On ER he played a teenager who turned up in the emergency room after being shot. He was also a troublemaker in an early role on NCIS. These days he's one of the biggest stars to grace the screen, but he used to just be in trouble on screen! 

Ewan McGregor

Ewan McGregor is something different to different generations. For some, he'll always be Renton in Trainspotting. Of course, for many, he'll always be a young Obi-Wan Kenobi. For even others, he's known as the guy who drove his motorcycle around the world in Long Way Round. You can't help but wonder if that name was inspired by his guest spot on ER in a Season 3 episode called "The Long Way Around" in 1997. 

Julie Bowen

While Julie Bowen is best known these days for playing Claire Dunphy in Modern Family, her career stretches way further back. Her first TV role came in the early '90s and her breakout role came in the 1993 Adam Sandler smash hit Happy Gilmore. In the late '90s, she had a nine-episode run on ER as the reoccurring character named Roxanne Please, who was John Carter's (Noah Wyle) girlfriend. 

Ving Rhames

1994 was a big year for Ving Rhames. Not only did he star in Pulp Fiction, but he also landed a reoccurring role as Walt Robbins, father-in-law to Dr. Peter Benton (Eriq La Salle). In total, he appeared in eight episodes over three seasons, but by then he'd also starred in Mission: Impossible and the rest is history. 

Lucy Liu

Lucy Liu is no stranger to hit television shows. She was a star of Ally McBeal in the '90s and '00s, and in Elementary in the teens. Early on, she also appeared in cameos and supporting roles on big shows like NYPD Blue and The X-Files. She also made it onto three episodes of ER, in 1995. 

Chris Pine

Believe it or not, there was a time when Chris Pine wasn't one of the "Chrises" and wasn't one of the biggest movie stars in the world. He was, in his early days, just like so many other actors, just looking to snag any role they could. Luckily for Pine, it was on a show like ER. In fact, the show he appeared in during Season 9 of the show was his first credited acting performance. 

Don Cheadle

When Don Cheadle appeared as a doctor in a 4-episode arc in 2002 on ER, he was already well-established as an actor. In fact, it came not long after he was established enough to take his name off the credits of Ocean's Eleven, despite delivering some of the best one-liners in the movie. 

J.K. Simmons

Any fan of Law & Order knows just how ingrained J.K. Simmons was in prime-time television around the turn of the century. He was a regular on that show, and he turned up in a bunch of others as well, including an episode of ER in 2004. you can always count on a great J.K. Simmons performance, no matter what he is in. 

Christina Hendricks

While she had been cast in a number of shows before Mad Men, Christina Hendricks had never really broken through as a star. That changed with the AMC show, but before that, she was just a regular hard-working actress in Hollywood. One of her earliest gigs was on ER in 2002. 

Adam Scott

Adam Scott is not the only Parks And Recreation star to appear in ER early in his career, but he did have a pretty intense role as an injured man clinging to life in the emergency room way back in 1995. It's hard to imagine it took 15 more years to get the big-time attention he deserves when he landed his role on Park & Rec. 

Glen Howerton

In 2005 Always Sunny In Philadelphia took the world by storm and went on to become one of the longest-running sitcoms of all time. Glen Howerton played a huge part in that, as one of the stars and co-creators. A couple of years earlier, he was playing a very different role as a doctor in six Episodes of ER during its 10th Season. 

Keiko Agena

Gilmore Girls regular and co-star of Prodigal Son, Keiko Agena is one of the few actors who played two different characters on ER. She first appeared on the show very early in her career, in 1998, then later appeared in the final season in 2009. 

Jessica Chastain

With three Oscar nominations and one win, Jessica Chastain has proven she's among the best Hollywood has to offer. She proved her acting years ago though, in shows like ER. In only her second credited role, she appeared on ER in 2004 in an episode called "Forgive and Forget."

Aaron Paul

For most people, Aaron Paul is best known for his legendary role in Breaking Bad but years before that show would become a hit, he played a pretty similar character on ER in an episode called "A Saint in the City," way back in 2003. 

Octavia Spencer

In 1998 when Octavia Spencer appeared on ER, it was the latest in a string of supporting roles she landed early in her career. That string would continue for a little while longer before she emerged as one of the most beloved stars of the teens and '20s after her star-making role in The Help.

Mena Suvari

As it was for a lot of cast members, American Pie was huge for Mena Suvari. She had been working for a few years in Hollywood before that, picking up roles here and there in shows like Boy Meets World and movies like The Slums of Beverly Hills. Another early role came in a 1998 episode of ER where she played a high school cheerleader who didn't want to listen to her doctors. 

Kirsten Dunst

As a child actor, Kirsten Dunst's career started when she was just six years old. It would be a few years before she landed a brief reoccurring role as a troubled teen in six episodes of ER in the show's third season. 

Dakota Fanning

Quite a few child actors who went on to greater fame came through the doors of the emergency room at Cook County General Hospital, including a young Dakota Fanning. Fanning played a young girl named Delia who came in after a car accident and viewers find out she's a cancer survivor. 

James Cromwell

One of the ultimate "that guys" in Hollywood, James Cromwell has been acting for decades. His career really started in earnest in the mid-'70s and he's been playing supporting and starring roles ever since. On ER, he played a drug-seeking priest in four episodes in Season 7. 

Josh Peck

Josh Peck was a breakout Nickelodeon star as half of Drake & Josh. That wasn't his first role though. After a few small roles and a reoccurring spot in The Amanda Show (which led to Drake & Josh), he landed a small role in an episode of ER in 2002 as a kid with heart problems. 

Eva Mendes

Before Eva Mendes semi-retired to raise her family with Ryan Gosling, she was one of the biggest stars on the planet. You can trace her career all the way back to her very first role which came in 1998 on an episode of ER. It's wild to look back and watch her doing her first on-screen performances with George Clooney and not think about what lay ahead for both of them. 

Shia LaBeouf

Without a doubt, Shia LaBeouf has had one of the wildest careers of the 21st Century. There have been times when he was on top of the world, and others when he... definitely wasn't. One high point early in his career was of a kid in the emergency room of Cook County General in 2000, during Season 6. 

Milana Vayntrub

Milana Vayntrub eventually became one of the most recognizable actors in commercials as the AT&T pitchwoman. Long before that though, she was like a lot of child actors who got their start on ER. She appeared in three episodes, her first three credited roles, as a Russian girl, way back in Season 1. 

John Mahoney

Before scoring the role of a lifetime as Martin Crane on Fraiser, John Mahoney had been a steadily working actor going back to the '70s. After Frasier, he could pretty much write his own ticket. One role he chose to take was that of a self-professed "drag queen" whose long-time boyfriend was in rough shape in the hospital on ER in 2006, making a strong statement about gay marriage before many were brave enough to join him. 

Janel Moloney

One of the many great actresses who found early work in their career on ER was Janel Moloney. Moloney scored only a handful of roles between that and The West Wing, but boy was the West Wing lucky to have her - as was ER in its first season when she appeared in one episode. 

Amy Ryan

One of the most underrated characters in The Wire has to be Beadie Russell, played by Amy Ryan. About a decade before she joined The Wire in Season 2, she starred in a single episode of ER in the show's first season. She's been in many TV shows and movies since, including a beloved recurring role on The Office and in the underrated Netflix original Worth.

Rosemary Clooney

George Clooney isn't the only famous person in his family. His aunt is, of course, the inimitably Rosemary Clooney, who was one of the most beloved singers of her generation. She only had about a dozen acting credits on her impressive resume, but one was ER during the show's first season. What a great experience for her and her nephew. Her son, actor Miguel Ferrer, also appeared in an uncredited role in the series premiere of the show. 

Dan Hedaya

If you grew up in the '90s, Dan Hedaya was seemingly everywhere, but he's probably best remember by that generation as Cher Horowitz's angry but loving father in Clueless. On ER, he plays a lawyer with... questionable ethics, but a heart of gold. He appeared in four episodes over the length of the whole show. remembered

If you have any children in your life, you’ve inevitably come across a friendly, cartoon Australian Blue Heeler named Bluey. In her show, aptly named Bluey, the colorful pooch goes through the ups and downs of puppyhood with her friends and family by her side. The show is currently extremely popular for some families with a Disney+ subscription, and even A-listers are a part of the Bluey bubble.  According to Ryan Gosling, his kids had an interesting reaction when his wife and Place Beyond the Pines costar, Eva Mendes, made a cameo on the show. 

When Mendes voiced the role of a yoga teacher in 2021, their two children, Esmeralda Amada and Amada Lee, were less than enthusiastic. Per an interview Gosling gave to People, they were initially very bullish about Mendes tackling a gig the kids could watch:

The three-time Oscar nominee added that the kids wanted him to skip over her part altogether. 

Despite their disinterest in their mother’s role in the show, Gosling later revealed that they did have something to say about his role in the action film The Fall Guy where he starred alongside Emily Blunt (our interview).  

As it turns out, the Gosling kids aren't the only Hollywood children who are quite blasé about watching the work of their famous parents. Good Will Hunting Oscar winner and all-around movie star Matt Damon appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers and said in an interview his teenage daughter doesn’t watch the movies that he is supposedly “good” in, remarking, "If I get bad reviews in something, that’s the one she wants to see."

He went on to say that once she referred to one of his movies, The Great Wall, as simply The Wall. When corrected, she said, “Dad, there is nothing great about that movie.” Ouch. 

Coincidentally, Damon’s best friend and Good Will Hunting co-writer Ben Affleck has had similar reactions from his children viewing his work. In an interview with EW that Damon actually conducted, Affleck said that his children enjoyed his film 1998 film Armageddon, but still teased him about its plot.

Personally, I think I can sympathize with where the Gosling, Damon, and Affleck children are coming from. To them, their parents may have fallen in love under the Hollywood spotlight, but a job is just a job. Having famous parents is not glamorous and exciting like it is to us non-Hollywood folk. Perhaps when they get older, they will want to check out their parents' IMDB pages and see what they've missed out on all this time. 

In Ryan Gosling's best romances, we've seen him fall in love on screen many times. However, his real-life love story with Eva Mendes might be the sweetest of all. The two met on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines in 2011, and in the years since they’ve gotten married and share two kids. Now, the Barbie actor has candidly opened up about his relationship with his partner, and the origins of their love story.

In The Place Beyond the Pines, Gosling and Mendes play two lovers who share a child, and they have a complicated past and a violent present. As some of Ryan Gosling’s most memorable characters made their way to the big screen, his partner was there to hype him up. Mendes took to social media to show off her hubby as Ken in Barbie, and she even broke her own rule by posting photos of Gosling kissing Emily Blunt in The Fall Guy, because she loved it so much.

In his latest movie The Fall Guy, the Canadian actor shares a lot of screen time with British actress Emily Blunt that’s become a memorable focal point for the movie. Mendes was in such awe over her main squeeze’s latest action-comedy flick that she broke her own rule about posting a photo of Gosling kissing another woman, as evidenced by a Gosling-Blunt promotional photo displayed on her social media feed.

Eva Mendes reportedly married her Place Beyond the Pines costar in 2022, and she’s made great strides supporting his acting career. So much so that the Hitch actress has decided to break her own rule about posting photos of Ryan Gosling kissing his on-screen love interests with an Instagram picture of him and Emily Blunt lip-locking in a Fall Guy promotional poster. Other than the insane action sequences seen in The Fall Guy, people were loving the Ryan Gosling-Emily Blunt action movie for the insane chemistry between the two leads. Screening reactions at CinemaCon 2024 included CinemaBlend’s Sean O’Connell saying Gosling and Blunt’s undeniable chemistry is a reason to see this movie. With Eva Mendes even writing praises for her life partner's on-screen chemistry with Blunt, that must mean their scenes together truly are worth giving director David Leitch’s film a try.

The Training Day actress makes an excellent point about the rarity of a non-superhero film getting the top box office spot. The Fall Guy may have made underwhelming numbers to kick off the summer blockbuster season, but Box Office Mojo’s numbers say that the TV series-adapted film still managed to be number one at the box office the first weekend it came out on May 3rd.

And no, it didn’t break the box office, only managing to make $107 million worldwide on a reported budget of $125–150 million. But like Mendes pointed out, it did manage to set a world record for a stunt of the most cannon rolls performed in a car. People are loving Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy for being a touching tribute to the stunt community. David Leitch's big-screen adaptation of the classic Lee Majors-led show really goes all in on the action. The Oscar-nominated leading man had four stunt performers doubling for him in the movie, Gosling did perform a few stunts of his own. However, his life partner, Eva Mendes, “wouldn’t let him” do one particular stunt, and I honestly can’t blame her. 

According to NPR the Notebook actor performed a fight scene inside a spinning garbage bin on the street and surfed on a metal plate dragged by a truck. Those two endeavors alone are quite impressive. Interestingly, though, producer Kelly McCormick told The LA Times that Eva Mendes put the brakes on one stunt, which would've put her partner in a very, let's say, hot situation:

I don’t blame Eva Mendes for putting a stop to that. Being set on fire, especially without previous stunt work training in that department, may not have gone well for the talented actor. It’s a good thing that Mendes, who reportedly married her Place Beyond the Pines co-star in 2022, is always looking out for her man. For example, the Hitch actress called out the Ken haters back when Gosling received flak for taking on the role of the Barbieland resident. At the time, she said that she was "proud to be this Ken’s Barbie.” I’m sure he’s thankful to have Mendes in his life as well along with their two daughters.

The newly released movie The Fall Guy has the Canadian actor playing a stunt performer trying to find the missing star of his ex-girlfriend’s movie. As Ryan Gosling was only playing a stuntman, he had the help of stunt doubles Logan Holladay, Justin Eaton, Troy Brown, and Ben Jenkin to do the film's high-level action maneuvers. While the A-lister didn’t break a Guinness World Record with his stunt work like Holladay did, you can still credit Gosling for the stunts he accomplished, like falling backward 15 stories on wires.

Believe it or not, the Drive actor's motivation to make a stunt movie goes back to his time as a teen actor starring on Young Hercules. He knew that all of the action scenes done for that kid’s series were done by stunt performers risking their lives only to “disappear into the shadows.” By actually portraying one of those stunt workers, he saw the tough path stunt guys take and that they deserve more praise for their place in Hollywood. Hopefully, the time will come when an Oscars category dedicated to stunt work is instituted.

Right now, though I'm just glad that Ryan Gosling made it through production in one piece. It's dicey to play with fire in the figurative sense, but that's absolutely the case in the literal sense. Shout out to Eva Mendes for being honest and not risking the father of her kids getting a bit singed.

Many of Saturday Night Live Season 49’s hosts have truly brought their A-game over the past month, lending their talents to some memorable sketches. No shade to any of them, but I have no problem saying that Ryan Gosling may be the best to fill the gig this year. From his Taylor Swift-inspired monologue with fellow The Fall Guy cast member Emily Blunt to the uproarious Beavis and Butt-Head sketch, he absolutely crushed it. Eva Mendes, Gosling’s longtime partner, was impressed as well, but there’s one particular segment she’s super happy about. And even Rita Wilson as well as others agree.

During the night, the Oscar nominee appeared in a sketch that also featured SNL stars Kenan Thompson and Marcello Hernandez. The bit, “Can’t Tonight,” sees the trio of actors playing three friends, one of which is of Cuban descent and the other Dominican. Ryan Gosling’s character, however, is a native of the United States who married a Cuban woman. As a result, he’s developed a thick accent akin to those of his buddies. The sketch shows Gosling and Hernandez’s characters trying to convince Thompson’s to join them on a night on the town. Needless to say, the result is very funny, and you can check it out below:

Eva Mendes, who is of Cuban descent, eventually took to Instagram to share the clip and offer some praise for the stars involved. Of course, she also sent a special shout-out to her “Cuban Papi” for putting in the work. Her entire statement is incredibly sweet: 

It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest that the star, who quit acting in Hollywood a decade ago, took some time to shout out her man. After all, she frequently does that when it comes to his endeavors and was really supportive of his Ken work for Barbie over the past year. She even called out the Ken haters while defending the father of her two kids. What makes this latest message of support particularly sweet is that it’s joined by a chorus of positive thoughts. As of this writing, the sketch has over 1.6 million views on YouTube alone. Considering its popularity, one has to wonder if SNL would consider doing a follow-up, if or when Ryan Gosling hosts again. I certainly think there’s potential for another bit involving these three enthusiastic buddies. It could generate some more laughs, but I’d be down for another if only to see another sweet message through which Eva Mendes shouts out her Cuban papi. 

Those who’ve yet to see the fan-favorite actor’s third hosting stint on Saturday Night Live can stream it using a Peacock subscription. And, of course, new episodes of the late-night institution air on the titular evening at 11:30 p.m. ET as part of the 2024 TV schedule. The show is set to welcome Dua Lipa as host and musical guest on May 4.

There was a time when music videos were as important as the radio in promoting the hottest artists and songs of the day. Back in the '80s and '90s, MTV was one of the most powerful cultural forces in the country, and that was reflected in how many stars you can spot in videos from the day. 

Sometimes, they were already huge stars, like Robin Williams and Chevy Chase, other times, they were actors looking to get their break and now, years later, we can marvel at their humble beginnings. This is a list of famous people in videos from the zenith of MTV highlights both.

Alicia Silverstone - "Cryin'"

Alicia Silverstone first got famous for starring in videos, specifically Aerosmith videos. The Clueless star appeared in three videos for the Boston rockers, the first for the song "Cryin'", then later showing up in the videos for "Amazing," alongside Dazed & Confused cast member Jason London. Silverstone's final appearance, and maybe the most famous video, was for the song "Crazy," alongside Steven Tyler's daughter, Liv Tyler. 

Courteney Cox - "Dancing In The Dark"

One of the most famous examples of a star getting her first break in a music video is, of course, Friends star Courteney Cox in the video for Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark." The video, which came out in 1984, was directed by Brian De Palma and, according to Cox, she was one of several women Springsteen could have picked out of the audience, and it was random that he chose her. What kismit! 

Cindy Crawford - "Freedom '90"

Director David Fincher, who has had quite an amazing career in film, started in music videos. One of those videos, George Michaels' "Freedom '90," was challenging because Michaels told Fincher he wasn't going to appear in the video. Fincher decided to cast a bevy of famous supermodels to lip-sync the song, including Cindy Crawford in a bathtub. 

Eva Mendes - "Miami"

In 1998, a young actress from Miami was cast in a video for the Will Smith song, "Miami." Eva Mendes had starred in one direct-to-video movie at that point and was that actress. It would be another three years before her breakout role in Training Day. It's a brief moment in the video, as she drove her convertible next to Smith's on the causeway to Miami Beach.

In 1993, Janet Jackson was on top of the world. Her fifth album, janet. was another huge hit, selling millions of copies, partly on the strength of the single, "That's the Way Love Goes." Little did anyone know at the time that one of the extras in the video would go on to a career that eclipsed even Jackson's, a then-unknown Jennifer Lopez. 

Matt LeBlanc - "Miracle"

Bon Jovi's "Miracle" is, let's be frank, not the New Jersey legends' best work. One thing they did get right was the casting for the video. Matt LeBlanc was a young actor and model just starting out on a career, so while his job is really only to look good in this video, he certainly does. It would be a few more years before America was introduced to his comedic chops too. 

Hugh Laurie - "Walking On Broken Glass"

By the time Hugh Laurie appeared in the video for Annie Lennox's "Walking on Broken Glass" in 1992, he was already very famous in the UK. It would be a few more years until the legendary TV show House would debut in the US, making Laurie a household name on both sides of the pond. John Malkovich also stars in the video, reminding fans of his role in Dangerous Liaisons. 

Angelina Jolie - "Wondering"

Angelina Jolie was a model in Hollywood from her teen years on, so it's no wonder she would have a few videos of her resume, including The Rolling Stones' video for "Has Anybody Seen My Baby," but it is surprising to see her in a video for the Athens, GA-based jam band Widespread Panic's song "Wondering" from 1993. Jolie also appears on the cover of the band's album Everyday, which includes "Wondering."

Zooey Deschanel - "She's Got Issues"

Zooey Deschanel is as successful in music, with her duo She & Him as she is on the big screen, so of course she has an early credit in a music video. Deschanel appears with fiery red hair in the video for "She's Got Issues" by The Offspring. 

Naomi Campbell - "Is This Love"

Bob Marley died over four decades ago, but his legacy is as big as ever, with the release of the biopic One Love in 2024. Back in the day, the reggae superstar filmed a video in London for his song "Is This Love" featuring a couple of local kids, including a 7-year-old Naomi Campbell!  

Macaulay Culkin - "Black Or White"

Michael Jackson redefined what a music video could be with "Thriller" and after that, he often released short films that were much more than just a song, and often they had big stars in them. For "Black or White" in 1991, MJ brought in Macaulay Culkin and George Wendt to play father and son, for example. 

Christina Hendricks - "One Hit Wonder"

Long before Christina Hendricks hit the big time with her role in Mad Men, she was a model and struggling actor in the '90s. One of her earliest roles, way back in 1998, was in the video for "One Hit Wonder" by Everclear. Luckily for all of us, that wasn't her only hit. 

Matthew McConaughey - "Walkaway Joe"

Alright, alright, alright, we'll concede that Dazed and Confused is what made Matthew McConaughey famous, but before that, he appeared in Trisha Yearwood's video for her hit "Walkaway Joe," playing the titular character of the song. 

Wesley Snipes - "Bad"

For the second single, "Bad" from his album of the same name, Micheal Jackson teamed up with Martin Scorsese to make an 18-minute short film for the video. In the video, Jackson famously has a dance-off with his rivals in a New York subway station. One of the baddies is none other than Wesley Snipes, who only had a few credits under his belt previously. 

Patrick Swayze - "Rosanna"

Toto's song "Rosanna" is famously about Rosanna Arquette. Less well-known is that if you watch the video closely, you'll notice a familiar face as one of the West Side Story-like dancers. Patrick Swayze, one year before his big break in The Outsiders is one of the dancers. In an even cooler bit of trivia, another one of the uncredited dancers in the video is Cynthia Rhodes, who would co-star as Swayze's first dance partner, Penny, in Dirty Dancing. 

Elijah Wood - "Forever Your Girl"

Elijah Wood has been working in Hollywood forever. He started as a child actor in films like Back to the Future II and The Good Sun, but before those even, he had a part in Paula Abdul's video for "Forever Your Girl" in 1989. 

Chevy Chase - "You Can Call Me Al"

Chevy Chase was one of the biggest stars on the planet in 1986 when he starred in the video for "You Can Call Me Al" with his buddy Paul Simon. It is, no lie, one of Chase's best performances, and it's impossible not to crack up at his facial expressions and physical comedy in the video. 

Johnny Depp - "Into The Great Wide Open"

Johnny Depp has always wanted to be a rock star, so it was a great move by Tom Petty to get him to play the part of one in the video for "Into The Great Wide Open" in 1991. The video also stars the legendary Faye Dunaway and Gabrielle Anwar. 

Jennifer Connelly - "I Drove All Night"

The late, great Roy Orbison found almost as much fame after he died as he found in life. Two albums of all-new songs were released posthumously and one song, "I Drove All Night," released in 1992, featured Jennifer Connelly alongside Jason Priestly, in the video, along with Orbison in grainy images of an old TV appearance. 

Kirsten Dunst - "I Knew I Loved You"

Does anybody remember the band Savage Garden? The Aussie duo had a string of huge hits in the late '90s, including the song "I Knew I Loved You" which features Kirsten Dunst as a woman on a subway with whom the lead singer, Darren Hayes, is in love. 

Robin Williams - "Don't Worry, Be Happy"

Bobby McFerrin's 1988 song "Don't Worry, Be Happy" has to be one of the most surprising #1 hits of all time. The song was huge when it came out, and went on to win three Grammys. Someone must have had an inkling though, because superstar Robin Williams co-stars in the video with McFerrin. 

Kim Basinger - "Last Dance With Mary Jane"

Tom Petty made some legendary videos during his career, but the strangest has to be the one for "Last Dance With Mary Jane" which features Kim Basinger playing a corpse, dressed up as a bride. Great song, but a very weird video.

Keanu Reeves - "Rush, Rush"

1991 was a big year for Keanu Reeves. Not only did he star in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey and Point Break, but he also appeared as a James Dean-like character in the video for "Rush, Rush" by Paula Abdul. 

Eddie Murphy - "Do You Remember The Time"

In case you've forgotten just how huge Michael Jackson was in the early '90s, remember there was a time he could premiere a video on MTV, BET, and Fox all at the same time. The video starred Jackson, of course, along with Eddie Murphy and Iman as ancient Egyptian royalty. Magic Johnson also appeared. 

Katie Holmes - "Tongue Tied"

Katie Holmes' career was just starting to take off in 1999 with her starring turn on Dawson's Creek. She also found some time to appear in the video for the song "Tongue Tied" by pop punk band Eve 6. It's not the last time Holmes has appeared in a video, either. A year later, in 2000, she starred with Micheal Douglas and others in a Bob Dylan video. 

Winona Ryder - "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child"

By far the award for the strangest appearance on this list goes to Winona Ryder in the video for Mojo Nixon's song "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child." Leave it to the late Nixon for coming up with the most ridiculous premise for a song, then landing a star like Ryder to star in the video in 1989, the same year she appeared in Heathers. 

RuPaul - "Love Shack"

If one were to guess which 1980s video to expect a RuPaul appearance, the smart money would be a B-52's video. That's exactly what happened in 1989 when RuPaul popped up very briefly in the video for "Love Shack" as a dancer and partygoer. He wasn't close to famous yet, but he was good friends with the band and he fits right into the campiness of the video. 

Benicio del Toro - "La Isla Bonita"

Benicio del Toro made his big screen debut in 1988 in Pee Wee's Big Top, but a year earlier, he was one of the extras in the video for Madonna's "La Isla Bonita." He is way in the background and can only be clearly seen in one shot, but when you watch the video, it's unmistakenly del Toro. 

Liv Tyler - "Crazy"

According to Liv Tyler, she didn't meet her biological father, Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler, until she was eight, and didn't know he was her father for another few years. Still, by the time she starred in the video for "Crazy," they had developed a healthy relationship, and the video, in which she co-stars with Alicia Silverstone, launched her career.

Captain Lou Albano - "Girls Just Want To Have Fun"

Cyndi Lauper was one of the biggest breakout stars of early MTV and for good reason. The low-budget video for her debut single, "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" featured a quirky cast that included her mother (playing her mother), her lawyer, and wrestling star "Captain" Lou Albano as her father. It's a video as fun as the song and it was played on repeat in those early MTV days. 

John Goodman - "Wild Wild Life"

The song "Wild Wild Life" by The Talking Heads was part of their soundtrack for the David Byrne-directed film True Stories. For the video, he recruited some of the people who appear in the film, including John Goodman, who lip-syncs along with the song in a karaoke bar. 

LeVar Burton - "Word Up"

LeVar Burton first found fame as Kunta Kinte in Roots, one of the most memorable performances by any actor, ever. About a decade later, between Roots and Star Trek: The Next Generation, Burton popped up in the video for "Word Up" by Cameo, playing a police officer trying to arrest the band. 

One video we left off this list because it's just too big a list on its own is the video for Ghostbusters which, in addition to the stars of the film also includes Chevy Chase, Danny Devito, Peter Falk, Al Franken, John Candy, and more. It's all too much to add to his list of some of the coolest appearances of stars in music videos! 

When the first trailer of Barbie came out and shared the first footage of Ryan Gosling as Ken, it was met with a polarizing response of people coming down hard on the actor’s age. Then once the movie came out, the critics who saw the comedy film felt Gosling stole the show, and his performance even landed him among this year’s Oscar nominees. With all of the positivity that’s come from the Canadian actor playing the Mattel Inc. doll, his real-life partner, Eva Mendes, called out all of the haters who ever doubted him.

The first time we caught a glimpse of Ryan Gosling as Ken, those holy abs and hair were on the minds of many fans. Seeing that tan and bleach blond hair led the chisel-ab Gosling to receive responses on social media creating a mockery of his new look. Barbie hadn't even been released in theaters yet and social media users were quick to question whether The Notebook actor was the right fit for the Greta Gerwig film. Luckily for Gosling, he’s got a Barbie of his own to give haters a piece of her mind, and a bunch of other celebrities cheered her on with A+ responses.

How Eva Mendes Responded to Ken Haters

A year later, Eva Mendes’ man is now an Oscar nominee because of his performance as Ken. But, it doesn't mean she's forgotten about those who gave flack to her partner before the film came out. She took to Instagram to show her pride in her Place Beyond the Pines co-star and called out those who didn’t think he could pull his performance off. Her bold caption states:

Look at Eva Mendes standing by her man! The Hitch actress has always been in support of Ryan Gosling since his first photos of Ken came out. In fact, she even created the perfect hashtag #Thatsmyken to show love for the Barbieland resident. Mendes also showed her support rocking a tee with Ken’s photo on it and defended Gosling’s platinum blonde hair for Barbie, arguing that he’s playing a doll and not a real person. The pride she has in the leading man of her life stands out so strongly ever since he got the part.

In her Instagram post, she threw back one of the first articles written by Rolling Stone back in 2022 describing Ryan Gosling’s look as Ken to give a “major cringe.” She also highlighted portions of the article that said hateful things about the Crazy Stupid Love actor, like how people will be “lining up for therapy appointments” after watching his performance, and how he looks like a “creepy, older West Hollywood” man. I’d like to hope anyone who had negative first impressions about Gosling as Ken is eating their words right now considering his name appearing amongst the nominees of many award shows.

With so many fans, Ryan Gosling isn’t short of love. The Lars and the Real Girl actor really did give it his all playing Ken. He was able to make us laugh, get angry, cry and sympathize with his character’s struggle of trying to define himself. With the strong transformation Gosling put into the part, it’s no wonder he’s getting Oscar attention.

While people may have been happy for the former Mickey Mouse Club member, we couldn’t help but think about the many Oscar snubs Barbie endured. Amid the eight Oscar nominations, Greta Gerwig was snubbed as director  and the film’s lead Margot Robbie was practically “robbed” of a nomination too. The Best Supporting Actor nominee wasn’t happy about the news. In his response to his Barbie chums getting snubbed, he believed the Lady Bird director and Robbie were responsible for the Best Picture nominee breaking the records that it did, and that “there’s no Ken without Barbie.” 

Even though it was a shame that Ryan Gosling got polarizing responses when he first appeared on the scene as Ken, it’s a good thing that Eva Mendes was there by his side through it all, and is still there now to defend him against any haters. While it wasn’t fair for his Barbie pals to get snubbed, at least the Remember the Titans actor will be at the Academy to represent the movie and the performance that had critics and fans sending praise for him. Very few people can say that they started out working their dream job and celebrities — excluding some well-known child stars, of course — are certainly no exception. Many of the biggest names on the A-list used to make a living doing something completely different than what they are now famous for, but at least some of them can say that one of their earliest jobs was especially different. Matthew McConaughey (Golf Course Armadillo Hunter)

Matthew McConaughey broke through in the industry with his unforgettable performance in Dazed and Confused in 1994. Earlier than that (as he revealed to GQ), the Academy Award-winning Texas native worked at Oak Forest Country Club initially to just rake the golf course sand traps, until he was asked to also help get rid of an armadillo infestation. All right, all right, all right.

Christopher Walken (Lion Tamer)

Did you ever notice how often Christopher Walken has played an animal — such in 2016’s astonishing The Jungle Book remake as King Louie or in the 1998 animated adventure, Antz? Well, as the Oscar-winner revealed to Vanity Fair, he actually has a unique connection with animals, having gained some experience with lion taming while working at a traveling circus.

Simu Liu (Birthday Party Spider-Man)

When Simu Liu led the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings cast in the title role, technically, that was not his first time playing a Marvel Comics character. While on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Chinese-Canadian actor shared that he used to dress up as Spider-Man and entertain children at birthday parties.

Jennifer Lopez (Law Office Tax Return Filer)

Most people know that one of Jennifer Lopez’s earliest jobs before becoming “Jenny from the Block” was dancing with the Fly Girls on In Living Color. Yet, the Bronx Times revealed that, before even then, she spent her Saturdays at the Thomas Lavin Law Office filing tax returns.

Margot Robbie (Sandwich Artist)

From the way Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn speaks so passionately about a certain breakfast item in 2020’s Birds of Prey, you might think the Australian actor knows a thing or two about making sandwiches, and you would be correct. The Academy Award nominee spoke to Sean Evans on Hot Ones about her time as a “sandwich artist” at Subway, where she actually invented a few delicious concoctions of her own.

Terry Crews (Courtroom Sketch Artist)

A lesser-known fact about Terry Crews is that he is an exceptional drawer and even showed some of the best examples from his portfolio on Jimmy Kimmel Live. During that same visit, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast member and America’s Got Talent host recalled how he put that talent to great use by working for a television station sketching scenes from local trials in his hometown of Flint, Michigan.

Megan Fox (Smoothie Shop Banana Mascot)

One time when Megan Fox appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the actor fell prey to the host’s recurring “jump scare” gag, courtesy of a person dressed as up as a banana. The costume choice was in reference to the Transformers movies star’s first job at a smoothie shop, for which she would, sometimes, have to dress as the yellow fruit to promote the business.

Hugh Jackman (Clown)

While known best for playing very intimidating characters like Wolverine in the X-Men movies, Hugh Jackman is known to be a very funny and charming presence offscreen. It makes sense when you discover the Australian actor used to work as a clown, but would reveal to Howard Stern that his talents were limited to juggling and found entertaining children above three years old quite difficult.

Eva Mendes (Hot Dog On A Stick Vendor)

Fun fact: one of Eva Mendes’ earliest show business gigs was appearing in Will Smith’s 1998 “Miami” video before reuniting with him in Hitch seven years later. Before then, she made dough working at a “hot dog on a stick place,” which she revealed to Australia’s Will & Woody radio show (via Daily Mail) that she was actually fired from for giving an inappropriate Secret Santa gift to a coworker.

Sylvester Stallone (Girls Boarding School Dorm Bouncer)

Even if Sylvester Stallone had not written one of the best sports movies ever, 1976’s Rocky, he could have landed the title role of the aspiring boxer by his physicality alone. According to a profile by People, his jacked frame came in handy when he was 18 and started working at a Swiss boarding school to both teach gym and keep unwanted guests out of the girls dorms.

Wanda Sykes (NSA)

As one of the funniest people of her generation — and the star of one of Paramount+’s best stand-up comedy specials — it may come as a surprise to learn that Wanda Sykes used to work for an organization as serious as the National Security Agency. However, as she explained on The Rich Eisen Show, her job did not involve covert operations or filing classified material, but “buying stuff” for the office, mostly.

Chris Pratt (Coupon Salesperson) 

Before joining an insane amount of franchises (including the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies to the Jurassic World trilogy), Chris Pratt had humble beginnings as a supporting character on hit TV shows Everwood and Parks and Recreation. However, his true beginnings were even humbler, having revealed during an appearance on Conan that he once sold coupons door-to-door and did well enough to manage his own office of salespeople.

Taylor Swift (Praying Mantis Exterminator)

Years before taking on the world as a hit singer-songwriter, Taylor Swift grew up on a Christmas tree farm where everyone in her family was given a different task. As she told Esquire, the star of the sensational “Eras Tour” had the job “picking praying-mantis pods off of the trees” so that customers would not have an invasion of multi-legged uninvited guests.

Brad Pitt (Chicken Restaurant Mascot)

At first, it’s a little surprising to think that the children of Ken himself didn’t score tickets to Barbie. However, given that they’re 8 and 7, respectively, it makes a little more sense. Gwerwig's movie is pretty family-friendly, but it’s still PG-13, and it has some more mature themes. So, it’s totally understandable if Gosling and Mendes want to wait until their kids are a bit older before they get to see their dad drinking brewskie beers in his Mojo Dojo Casa House. 

The good news is that by the time Gosling and Mendes are ready to show their kiddos Barbie, it will probably be easy for them to kick back and watch it as a family. There’s still no word on exactly when people with a Max subscription will be able to enjoy one of the biggest 2023 movie releases from home. Eva Mendes was cast in one 1999 episode when she was in her early ‘20s, and the gig predates her early movie roles like Training Day, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Hitch. 

The Once Upon a Time in Mexico alum also said that she is happy Pamela Anderson told her story on her own terms. It’s great to see one actress supporting another’s circumstances, especially given how vulnerable Anderson is in the 2023 Netflix movie release. Pamela, a Love Story hit the streaming service on January 31 and spent two weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10, even reaching the Top 10 in 48 countries. 

The doc chronicles the Canada native's story, with the actress and model sharing heartbreaking truths about her life. Among her recollections are the time she was sexually abused by her babysitter at a young age and the moment she was raped at the age of 12. She also recalled how posing for Playboy magazine empowered her because she was sharing her body of her own volition. 

Pamela Anderson also opens up about her own side of the infamous sex tape story, her tumultuous relationship with Tommy Lee and so forth. In addition, the film was simultaneously released with Anderson's memoir -- Love, Pamela: A Memoir of Prose, Poetry, and Truth. Anderson has been a pop cultural icon, but this is the first time she’s really been so honest about her life experiences to the public. Doing such a thing can be nerve-wracking, but it's likely comforting for her to know that she has people like Eva Mendes in the wings ready to support her.

The report cited for this story brought that possibility into question, as Eva Mendes has responded to previous questions about potential marriage with her own question. The main issue Eva Mendes had with Hollywood was being limited in her acting career due to her ethnicity. The 48-year-old actress felt pigeonholed by being a Latina. Despite leaving the film industry 10 years ago, she flirted with the idea of returning after seeing the strides Latina actresses have made in recent years.

She loves being a mom right now. But seeing other Latina actresses thriving may have piqued her interest in returning to Hollywood. All she needs now is to get the proper role to coax her back much like fellow actress Cameron Diaz. Much like Diaz, Mendes has been exploring other opportunities away from acting, including her co-ownership of the kitchen product brand Skura Style. Maybe hopping back into Hollywood will quell those rumors of her and Gosling reportedly moving away to his native country Canada.

So it’s no surprise that, allegedly, Mendes and Gosling have had some fun with his new blonde look. 

A source for Us Magazine hinted at as much, with the support for Ryan Gosling’s Barbie role extending into the couple’s personal lives. Highlighting just the sort of support Gosling has gotten from Eva Mendes, that unidentified speaker 

This alleged story about Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes, if true, wouldn’t be all that surprising. That first look at Gosling’s Ken was all abs, hair, and cocky attitude; which is exactly what the character requires. It’s also an insanely attractive look, and it even inspired Mendes to make a special request when it came to a very specific prop in that shot. Clearly, the love between these famous partners is in good shape, and that’s been shown yet again, in more ways than one.

From the word go, Eva Mendes has cheered Ryan Gosling on in his Barbie journey. That’s not where the support stops, naturally, as the same source that kicked things off above threw in this gem about Mendes’ support for Gosling’s overall career:

Barbie sets up shop in everyone’s cinematic dream house, starting July 21, 2023. Ryan Gosling fans don’t need to wait that long for their next fix, as the actor is currently kicking all sorts of ass in the Netflix movie The Gray Man. 

I’m not sure anybody really expected the Barbie movie to be such a topic of conversation so early in its production, but here we are. People absolutely cannot get over what this movie is, from Barbie’s absolutely incredible cast and behind the camera talent, to the bright and colorful look of the movie itself, Barbie is clearly doing something right. That being said, some people have taken issue with Ryan Gosling’s particular look as Ken in the film, but Gosling’s wife Eva Mendes has no problem with it.

When we all saw Margot Robbie as Barbie the internet went slightly mad with how absolutely perfect sheb looked. It seemed nothing could possibly top that. And then we saw Ken. Ryan Gosling is so over the top as Ken that no matter how many times you see the picture, you’re still in awe of just how hard the Barbie movie is going. Check it out.  

Appearing on The Talk, Eva Mendes was asked about her thoughts regarding Gosling’s look in the Barbie movie, and specifically the debate surrounding his platinum hair. Mendes took it all in stride, pointing out that if Gosling is looking really artificial, that’s ultimately fine since he’s playing a literal doll. Mendes said… 

While the exact way everything fits together in the Barbie movie is unclear we understand that both Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu are playing different versions of Ken in the film. With that it really does seem that the movie will give us a world where the famous dolls exist in reality. But in this case that doesn’t mean they look like real people, it means they look like the dolls have come to life.

The Barbie movie has been a unique animal since it was first announced with plans to cast Amy Schumer in the lead role. We knew then this was not going to be a traditional look at the iconic character, and while it seems the current version of Barbie is something new. The fact that the script is from Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, and that gerwig is also directing the film, tells us this is not going to be a standard IP boosting project.

With Barbie now filming it will still be some time before we’ll likely get a handle on just what the plot of the Barbie movie will be unless something big happens to leak. UNtil then we’ll just have to make do with these absolutely incredible publicity shots, but if they all look like this, I think fans will be more than happy. If nothing else, it will make Jerry O’Connell happy, who really got into the Ken look on The Talk.

Ryan Gosling is set to live in a Barbie world alongside Margot Robbie for Greta Gerwig’s live-action Barbie movie, which is among 2023 movie releases to get excited for. Barbie is currently filming in Los Angeles, and from the photos we’ve seen so far, Gosling could have another iconic role on the books as Ken. But what does his gal, Eva Mendesm think about his platinum blonde, super tan Ken look? It turns out the actress made a fun request related to Gosling’s Barbie look.  

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling have been together for over a decade and are raising their two daughters, Esmeralda and Amada, together between having high-profile careers. When recently asked about Gosling’s revealed Ken look, here’s what Mendes said:

Aside from that official image, there's been a number of sightings of Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie around Los Angeles shooting Barbie in some fabulous outfits. The pair have worn cowboy outfits and ‘80s skating outfits around Venice Beach thus far. Along with Robbie and Gosling, Barbie has a stacked cast also including Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera and Issa Rae, just to name a few.

Ryan Gosling is taking on a new role, but its not what fans may be expecting from the action and drama star. He’s gearing up to play Ken in the new Barbie movie, and after the first look dropped, his wife Eva Mendes came up with the perfect hashtag to keep the conversation going on social media. 

The first look at Ryan Gosling as Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was just released on social media, and actress Eva Mendes was ready to rock and roll with a buzzy hashtag. Take a look below: 

In addition to expressing her excitement about the film, Eva Mendes shared the hashtag #thatsmyken to spread the word. Plenty of celeb friends jumped on the conversation, including Tom Hank’s wife, actress Rita Wilson. She claimed that the post must be “breaking the internet for sure,” and she wasn’t too far off. 

Internet users quickly jumped on the image of Ryan Gosling, prompting glee, incredulity, and more than a few good-spirited memes. It’s certainly a different look for Ryan Gosling, but Eva Mendes doesn’t seem to mind: she called his performance ‘So F. Funny’ and ‘So F. Good’ (anyone else jealous that she seems to have seen it already?).

Barbie had been in development for quite a while, but the process began to speed up last year when the cast was officially assembled. In addition to Ryan Gosling, the star-studded cast of Barbie will also include Margot Robbie as the titular blonde, Will Ferrell, Marvel’s Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, and Michael Cera. Other cast members will include a trifecta from Sex Education in the form of Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, and Connor Swindells. Aside from Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie, it’s mostly unknown how all of these performers will fit into the Barbie universe. We’ll just have to wait and see if everyone shares Ryan Gosling’s Fire Island style and bleach blonde hair.

There are so many celebrity couples out there - some that have stood the test of time and others that have not. And I’m sure over time, only more and more will start to pop up with even crazier romances. 

Hollywood can be a wonderful place for stars and entertainers wanting to remain close to the film and television industry. But it can be a hard place to be if you want a semblance of "normal" life. Oftentimes, this aspect results in A-listers living the city for a more tranquil life outside of entertainment. There might be two more stars following suit. Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are reportedly moving their family away from the entertainment epicenter for a great reason.

A source close to the Hollywood couple alleged they looking to leave Los Angeles for the sake of their children’s well-being and privacy, according to OK! Magazine. Known for being very protective over their two daughters, Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are allegedly looking for more privacy as their children are getting older. But the couple isn’t just moving to another state in the U.S., they’re reportedly trying to move to Canada. They are allegedly eyeing properties in The First Man star’s home province of Ontario. The Hollywood couple is reportedly in agreement that Canada will serve as the perfect place to raise their two daughters.

According to the family source, the parents have been planning their escape from L.A. for some time. They claimed Eva Mendes is more interested in being a mom rather than being active in Hollywood, much like Cameron Diaz and Gwyneth Paltrow. Mendes hasn’t been in a movie in a few years. The source alleged Ryan Gosling is on board with Mendes’ decision as they claim he is set to take another film hiatus. While they have allegedly set their sights on Ontario, Gosling and Mendes will reportedly keep their LA home.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes reportedly aren’t making the move from the U.S. to Canada anytime soon. Gosling’s film schedule is currently filled with production on the Margo Robbie-led Barbie and the Wolfman reboot yet to begin. The Barbie star recently wrapped up production on the Netflix action flick The Gray Man. As soon as those projects wrap up, the couple will be ready for their reported big move.

Of course, the Hollywood couple wouldn’t be the first ones to leave the L.A. area for greener pastures. Firestarter star Zac Efron left the U.S. completely for a better life in Australia. Even MCU star Chris Hemsworth relocated his family back to his home country back in 2014. He and his family moved to the same town as Efron, which some neighbors weren’t happy with. Having a peaceful life or raising your children seems to have multiple stars living in LA for different countries.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes chose their current careers, not their daughters. The couple reportedly wants their daughters to have some privacy and anonymity in their lives. Hopefully, they get their wish and get to allegedly raise their children in Canada away from the Hollywood spotlight.

F9 finally raced into theaters this weekend, breaking a pandemic box office record and proving that movie theaters are almost all the way back. F9 sees the return of Han after his on-screen death in Fast 6, proving that if you are cool enough, you can never really die in the Fast and Furious universe. There are a few really interesting characters from older movies that fans would like to see return to the franchise. Now, F9‘s Jordana Brewster has revealed the OG character she wants back to the franchise and I’m here for it.

Fast and Furious is a movie franchise that now spans two decades and has gone through multiple transitions into what it has become today. 2 Fast 2 Furious seems so different than where the franchise is today. Still, the movie’s DNA has definitely influenced the franchise, and it gave us one of its best characters in Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson). It also gave us the character Jordana Brewster told Looper she'd like to see on the big screen again:

Jordana Brewster thinks it would be a good idea to bring Eva Mendes back into the fold. Brewster recognizes how the films have played with the timelines and makes sure everything is connected even though the movies can span decades. Honestly, it's hard to disagree with the idea of bringing back Mendes' Monica Fuentes.

Monica Fuentes was the undercover FBI agent that worked with Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and Roman to bring down crime boss Carter Verone (Cole Hauser). Monica also was Brian’s love interest, and the two were presumably together for a time after 2 Fast. However, that relationship was eventually dropped as if it never happened as the series started another soft reboot with the third installment, Tokyo Drift. But Monica did appear in the mid-credits scene of Fast 5 where she hands Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) a file revealing that Letty Ortiz is still alive.

The Fast Saga is gearing up for the conclusion of the main series and, hopefully, we'll see Eva Mendes back, even if it’s just to come in and wink at the audience. Anything is possible, even if it means getting Eva Mendes to jump back into the acting game for a bit.

There's a lot to consider with the future of this franchise. F9’s ending sets up the next two movies, and its end-credits scene raises many questions moving forward. There's even a possibility Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham return for Fast 10. But whatever direction the franchise goes, let’s hope the producers consider ideas from franchise vets like Jordan Brewster, Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris.

Just about everyone has their own insecurities and handle them in different ways. If that wasn’t clear before, it definitely is now, because apparently even the famously beautiful Eva Mendes has had insecurities about the way she looked in her prime in Hollywood. The Training Day star has now opened up about her past insecurities as an actress in a candid post.

Eva Mendes was once voted most desirable woman by a men’s only website and was on the top of pretty much all men’s (and even some women’s) celebrity cheat list. That reputation of being a Hollywood hottie apparently didn’t stop her from developing some serious insecurities about the way she looked, though, because she has now come clean in an Instagram post. Mendes posted a photo of herself from 20 years ago, when she was in her Hollywood prime, with a caption saying that she used to look at that photo and see only how weirdly shaped her face was. If that’s a weird shaped face, I don’t even want to know what Eva Mendes would think of mine. Just kidding, it’s easy to look at pictures of yourself and only see the faults, especially when you have the impossible Hollywood standards of beauty and body image to compete with. The vast majority of people who look at the same picture would only see a beautiful woman - some women would even kill to have the same features Mendes saw as “weird.”

In fact, Eva Mendes even says that now, 20 years later, she can look at the photo and feel some kind of envy toward her younger self for having such bone structure. While it’s awesome she can look back and love herself in the picture today, it still sounds like she may still battle image issues now, even though she’s still pretty much a goddess now that she’s a mother and into her late 40s. It just goes to show that what we see in the mirror or photos can be seen very differently by other people. The flaws we see in ourselves can be features that others think are the most beautiful.

While this is a common occurrence in a lot of people, it can be a pretty serious mental health battle for some. What Mendes is describing is a mild version of a phenomenon known as body dysmorphia, and some people have very serious cases of it that lead to eating disorders and other serious health risks. When a person starts fixating on a certain feature of themselves that they see as a major flaw, it has the potential to become pretty dangerous.

This is why it is important to check ourselves and see our worth in more than just our appearance and to learn to love what may make us different, including the features we may not be a huge fan of. What we see as a negative feature, someone may envy, especially our future selves. Eva Mendes’ post is a perfect reminder that everyone is their own worst critic and that anyone can have at least some negative thoughts about the way they look - even someone like Mendes, whose picture is probably still plastered all over teenagers’ walls.

You don't get to that level of success without dealing with your share of criticism, and you one also tends to develop something of a thick skin when it comes to those who make negative comments. However, recently Eva Mendes decided to respond directly to somebody on social media who accused her of having "work done."

Recently Eva Mendes posted to social media in order to send birthday wishes to a friend. One of Mendes' 2.4 million followers asked the actress why she did not post to Instagram as often as she once did. Another follower responded with the reason they thought she had spent less time online, that she had a problem with the way she currently looked. The user's statement was,

Certainly, that was a somewhat blunt way to put things. Even if it were true, it's not exactly a polite statement and posting it directly on the page means that many people who are fans of Eva Mendes are going to see it. They did, and there were many critical comments from others. However, Eva Mendes herself decided to respond as well. For the record, the entrepreneur says that she hasn't had any work done, though she also says it's nobody else's business if she did. In the end, the reason she's less present on social media is simply because she has other things she'd rather be doing. According to Mendes,

Every celebrity is going to see a lot of negative comments on their social media if they look often enough. The vast majority of people simply don't respond. After all refuting every negative statement wold take a ton of time. Eva Mendes even makes the comment here that she's not sure why she felt the need to respond. For whatever reason the post touched a nerve, or Mendes just happened to see it at a point when she had enough time to make a response. And now the person who made the comment has achieved their own minor celebrity, though probably not in any way they ever hoped.

Eva Mendes, who has a family with actor Ryan Gosling, already has a lot her plate. So it makes sense that she might be using social media less. Especially when rude fans comment about her appearance. Maybe that break was for the best.

The Fast And Furious franchise, in recent years, has become more and more insane with unbelievable stunts, cyborgs, and characters that seem to have been brought back from the dead. This was most recently seen in the record-breaking Fast And Furious 9 trailer where Han Lue (Sung Kang), who died in Tokyo Drift, walked on to the screen as if nothing happened.

All of that got us thinking - if characters like Han and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) can come back from the grave and continue driving, diving, and stealing cars with Dom and the rest of the crew, who else should return in future installments of the billion-dollar franchise?

Over the years, the Fast And Furious franchise has introduced audiences to dozens of iconic characters who have fallen by the wayside. Here are six of the fastest and most furious characters we’d like to see be brought back as the franchise continues to grow.

Monica Fuentes (Eva Mendes)

United States Customs agent Monica Fuentes (Eva Mendes) was a crucial element in the plot of 2 Fast 2 Furious, but was all but forgotten aside from a brief cameo in Fast Five. Introduced as the undercover contact for Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson), Fuentes helped the pair insert themselves in drug lord Carter Verone’s (Cole Hauser) criminal enterprise.

Fuentes disappeared from the series when the rest of the original cast returned for the 2009 Fast And Furious soft reboot, and as mentioned above, only returned for a brief cameo in the post-credits scene in the fifth installment of the franchise. It looked like she would maybe play a larger role in the subsequent films after her interaction with Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), but that hasn’t been the case.

It would be amazing if Fuentes returned at some point when Fast And Furious 9 premieres this summer.

Gisele Yashar (Gal Gadot)

This next one is a stretch, I know, but hear me out. So, we saw Han die in Tokyo Drift and then archival and alternate footage of him dying in Furious 7, only for him to return in F9. With all of that being said, couldn’t the same happen with Gisele Yashar, his former partner in crime and love interest? Yeah, we saw her fall from a plane in Fast And Furious 6, but that doesn’t mean she couldn't have miraculously survived the fall and went into hiding. It certainly wouldn’t be the strangest thing to happen in the Fast And Furious franchise.

Gisele played a major role in all of the movies from Fast And Furious (2009) to Fast And Furious 6, and over time, became a vital member of Dom and Brian’s crew. She was a remarkable driver, superb fighter, and with looks that could kill, Gisele helped out the crew in a number of ways. Her death was one of the most traumatic moments in the franchise and had an impact on everyone in the crew, especially Han.

Just imagine Han returns in F9, finds himself in mortal danger and is saved by a mysterious character. Now imagine that character is Gisele. Here’s my money, Universal. Take all of it.

Owen Shaw (Luke Evans)

The franchise introduced one of the most engaging villains when Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) was brought into the fold for Fast And Furious 6. Shaw would go on to give Dom, Brian, and the rest of the crew a run for their money before being taken out and placed in a coma at the end of the film.

Owen Shaw was only featured briefly in the beginning of Furious 7 when his brother Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) visited his kid brother and vowed to get back at the people that hurt his family. But that all changed by the time Fate Of The Furious rolled around a few years later when Deckard and Owen teamed up with Dom to save his young son, Brian, who had been kidnapped by Cipher.

We don’t know what came of Owen Shaw after forcing Cipher’s pilot to land the plane at the conclusion of the eighth film, and he didn’t show up in his brother’s spin-off Hobbs And Shaw, so we don’t know whether he will return for Fast And Furious 9 or not, but we can only hope that he teams up with his older brother again at some point. I mean, Luke Evans really brought the whole villain role to another level when compared to his predecessors, so having him return as either a villain or an anti-hero could open a lot of doors for the franchise.

Riley Hicks (Gina Carano)

Diplomatic Security Service agent Riley Hicks (Gina Carano) has only showed up once in the franchise when she was revealed to be a double agent working for Owen Shaw in Fast And Furious 6. Hicks was last seen being shot by a harpoon gun and falling out of an airplane, but there’s a small chance that someone of her stature would survive such an injury.

Plus, Gina Carano has become somewhat of an action star following her appearance in the 2013 film, including a minor role in the 2016 Deadpool and a much larger role in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. The former combat athlete and actress has become a much larger name and better performer since then, so it wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility if she showed up at one point or another in the future.

Tego Leo And Rico (Tego Calderon And Don Omar)

Tego Leo and Rico Santos quickly became fan favorites when they were introduced to the franchise via the 2009 short film Los Bandoleros that led into the events of Fast And Furious later that year. The two friends were key members of Dom’s crew during the oil tanker heist that served as the climax of the film, but the two would really take it up a notch with the next entry in the franchise.

During Fast Five, Leo and Rico performed a great deal of the recon work that needed to be completed before the crew could steal the two bank vaults for that incomprehensible action set-piece that anchored the entire movie. Following the events of the film, Leo and Rico were seen playing roulette in Monaco where they up their entire shares on red and black, respectively. The results of that bet were never revealed.

The two characters wouldn’t show up again until Fate Of The Furious, even then only being briefly shown when Dom was rescuing his son from Cipher (Charlize Theron). It’s not known what happened to the fan favorites, and they weren’t featured in the new trailer, but who knows, they could pop up again and tell everyone who won that fateful bet in Monaco.

Will any of these characters join the likes of Han Lue and return to the Fast And Furious franchise? We’ll just have to wait and see when Fast And Furious 9 hits theaters this summer.

According to recent rumors, Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes tied the knot in front of family and friends at a hush-hush ceremony sometime this year, sources have told Us Weekly. One of the sources even went on to dote on the couple, saying that they've always felt like they were married.

However, TMZ's sources have denied that the wedding happened, stating that Gosling and Mendes are still just dating one another. What to believe!?

The reason a secret wedding wouldn't come as too much of a surprise is that Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have kept their relationship largely out of the public eye, even though they've been dating for five years. Earlier this year, Gosling and Mendes managed the difficult task of keeping Mendes' pregnancy under wraps until just a month before the birth of their second daughter Amada.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes began dating in 2011, and went on to costar in the crime drama The Place Beyond the Pines together a year later. They welcomed their first daughter Esmeralda in 2014.

Ryan Gosling has had a couple of high profile relationships with costars before meeting Eva Mendes. He briefly dated Sandra Bullock after starring in Murder by Numbers with her in 2002, and then had a relationship with his The Notebook costar Rachel McAdams for a few years. Eva Mendes' only major relationship before Gosling was with filmmaker George Augusto, whom she dated for nearly a decade. Towards the end of her relationship with Augusto, Mendes even told HollywoodLife that she doesn't "think marriage is necessary." Has she changed her tune with Gosling?

Once seemingly everywhere on the big screen (she did five different movies in 2007), Eva Mendes has slowed down her acting career in recent years, most likely due to two recent pregnancies that immediately followed one another. The last movie that she had a part in was Ryan Gosling's 2014 directorial debut Lost River, which he also wrote. She's currently filming the upcoming sequel Fast 8, in which she reprises her role in the franchise as Monica Fuentes.

For his part, Ryan Gosling seems to be moving away from the smaller indie films that have fascinated him in the past few years and into bigger budget blockbusters. He followed up his role in last tear's Oscar winning The Big Short with the goofy buddy cop flick The Nice Guys, and is costarring with Emma Stone in the buzzy musical rom-com La La Land. In 2017, Gosling is hedging his bets with a massive blockbuster (the Blade Runner sequel) and a prestige film sure to catch the eyes of the Academy (Terrence Malick's Weightless, with Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, and Rooney Mara).

If TMZ's response to the original rumor proves to be accurate, Ryan and Eva didn't secretly wed, but we'll have to wait and see if further updates emerge.

Just in case you somehow missed it, Furious 7 spent the weekend totally obliterating the international box office. It earned $384 million worldwide, in a single weekend. We already assumed that, even after the tragic death of star Paul Walker, more movies were on the way, and whenever Fast & Furious 8 drops, you can expect to see a familiar face.

According to Umberto Gonzalez, the next installment in the supercharged action franchise may bring back Eva Mendes. Right now this is obviously just an unconfirmed rumor, so make sure to take it with a grain of salt, but the report indicates that whether or not Mendes returns could have a big impact the plot of the upcoming sequel.

Mendes played undercover U.S. Customs Agent Monica Fuentes in 2 Fast 2 Furious, where she helps Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson) take down a ruthless drug kingpin (Cole Hauser). We don’t know a ton about the story of Fast & Furious 8, but the franchise’s beefy lead Vin Diesel dropped two pieces of information a while back. He hinted that Kurt Russell’s Furious 7 character, the shadowy government agent Mr. Nobody, will play a larger role. In fact, he indicated that they signed Russell on for the latest movie with an eye on expanding his role next time out. Diesel also said that the action goes down in New York. (Or, at least, in part. These are films with a penchant for hopping around the globe and landing in exotic locations).

What role Eva Mendes might play in all of this remains to be seen. Gonzalez’ report also implies that, should Mendes not be down, they might do something aside from the NYC storyline, so it is easy to presume it is something major. If true, it’s going to be interesting to see how they bring Fuentes back. She was a character with close ties to Brian O’Conner but no one else in the crew, though Fast 5 provided an independent link. However, if Mr. Nobody and the government are involved, it’s entirely plausible that she might be involved in some capacity.

This is also a franchise that’s big on bringing back faces from the past, so it makes sense we could see Evan Mendes again. Vince (Matt Schulze) shows up in Fast 5 after not appearing since the first film; the same goes for Tej (Ludacris), who first shows up in 2 Fast; and now that the timeline has finally caught up to Tokyo Drift, Lucas Black’s Sean Boswell, who pops up in Furious 7, has reportedly signed on for more movies. They’ve also shown they are not afraid to get creative with the continuity to fit things in, so I have no doubt they’ll be able to get Mendes into the picture if she’s down.

You may still think of Eva Mendes as the woman from Hitch, or from the shampoo commercials, or from tabloid-ready relationships. But the actress who could easily spend a career coasting on her beauty has taken the last 4 years to make a series of risky and under seen films, from the gonzo Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans with Werner Herzog to the intimate Last Night with Massy Tadjedin to the surreal French experiment Holy Motors with Leos Carax.

Now the latest acclaimed director she can add to her Rolodex is Derek Cianfrance, who broke out with Blue Valentine several years ago and who is back with the sprawling, emotional, and really good The Place Beyond the Pines. Mendes plays Romina, a woman who hooked up with Ryan Gosling's character Luke while he was in town with a traveling carnival. When Luke comes back in town Romina reveals she's given birth to their son, setting Luke off on a quest to provide for his family in all the wrong ways.

With her segment of Pines set in the early 90s, Mendes told me about the secret behind the godawful jean shorts she wears in the film, plus why she's allowed herself to make fun, obscure movies instead of worrying about staying in the public eye. Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling still seem like an odd couple, though maybe that will come into focus when we see the film that introduced the two of them, Derek Cianfrance's spring release The Place Beyond The Pines. But now we have proof that this isn't just some on-set romance that vanishes the movie comes out. Gosling has now cast his girlfriend in the film he's planning as his directorial debut, the surreal and possibly terrifying How To Catch A Monster.

Bloody Disgusting got the scoop, reporting that both Mendes and Rob Zabrecky-- who has a lot of small credits to his name but nothing you are likely to recognize-- have joined the cast. Gosling's Drive co-star is still on board to play the lead, a mother who travels with her two sons into a "macabre and dark fantasy underworld" that somehow includes an underwater town. Mendes will play "Cat," described as a prominent member of the Big Bad Wolf Club… but we have no idea what that means beyond the clear fairy tale reference. Zabrecky will play a cab driver, but if it's unclear if that's just a bit part-- and if it was, why would he be announced alongside a major name like Mendes?

All in all we can't exactly put all these pieces together, but that's not really a bad thing. Gosling seems to have something unusual and challenging planned, and knowing too many details might ruin the twisted surprises to come. And as much as she ruins the fantasy that Ryan Gosling could be your boyfriend, Mendes has a lot of talent that hasn't come out often, and it's exciting to see her taking on challenging roles-- even when they come with the added benefit of a few more months on set with your hunky boyfriend.

After years as a documentarian, daring writer-director Derek Cianfrance broke through in narrative cinema with his compelling and controversial divorce drama Blue Valentine. The film riled the MPAA, won critical praise and earned its female star Michelle Williams her first Oscar nomination for a lead role. It also proved the start to Cianfrance's ongoing collaboration with thinking woman's heartthrob and celebrated leading man Ryan Gosling.

The pair recently reteamed fo The Place Beyond the Pines, a crime drama that stars Gosling as a motorcycle stunt rider who turns to robbing banks to support his girlfriend (Eva Mendes) and newborn son. But this dangerous brand of moonlighting urns him an enemy in a rookie cop with big ambitions (Bradley Cooper). The film's latest poster gave us a glimpse at its leads, but now we've seen plenty more. There's a shot of Romina and Gosling as Luke, cradling his little boy Jason, played by Anthony 'Tony' Pizza Jr. No, that last name is not a typo.

At the top of the article is a photo that reveals some of the fake tattoos Gosling donned for the production. Cianfrance told EW that the actor was eager to cover himself in tats, something he wouldn't do in real life as it might negatively impact his career. Cianfrance details,

Eva Mendes actually pulled double duty as an actress and actual waitress. Cianfrance claims she worked eight-hour shifts at the diner, adding, "I can cast the rest of the diner with real patrons, and suddenly everything is real." Now that's method.

Cianfrance also cast a lot of real-life cops from Schenectady, NY, to fill in the movie's fictional police force that not only included Cooper, but also Ray Liotta. Liotta is an actor Cianfrance says he wanted for the film before the script was even drafted.

The Place Beyond The Pines Opens March 29th.

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling have been a bit of an unofficial item for a while now. Gosling seems to be keeping low about the probable relationship after a year spent being a hot commodity in the headlines. Luckily for Gosling, just as the news mill is settling down on his front, his love life seems to be settling down, too.

Gosling spent a special New Year’s Day with Mendes, but also with his mother, Donna. The threesome were not seen in Los Angeles; however, instead choosing to spend the New Year Holiday in New York. Gosling and Mendes jetted to the city on Friday, leaving plenty of time to ring in 2012. By Sunday, however, the busy weekend had likely caught up with them. According to People, the happy trio spent Sunday afternoon at an AMC theater in Manhattan. There’s no word on what movie the group saw that afternoon, but luckily there are no Mendes or Gosling flicks in the regular theater right now, so whatever they saw wasn’t narcissistic.

Of course, no one involved has commented publicly on what the girlfriend/ mother meeting might mean, but it clearly does mean something. No one takes a significant other to meet his mom without hours of planning and fretting over what might happen. You just don’t bring that hassle upon yourself for someone that doesn’t matter. There may not be wedding bells in the air, but it seems there is certainly a little love.

Last Night stars two actors from two of the biggest movies of all time, Pirates of the Caribbean's Keira Knightley and Avatar's Sam Worthington. And yet, this stripped-down and very, very intimate drama is maybe exactly what you wouldn't expect form the two of them, baring their souls as married couple Michael and Joanna, separate for one evening and each running into temptation toward very different kinds of infidelity. Michael is on a business trip with a very comely co-worker (Eva Mendes), while Joanna bumps into a former flame (Guillaume Canet) who's in town for only one night; what decisions each of them make, to cheat or not to cheat, even while loving each other dearly, make up the minutely observed and constantly heartbreaking Last Night.

Massy Tadjedin makes her directorial debut with this film, which you almost never got to see-- it was purchased by Miramax in its third week of production and then languished there while the company went up for sale, and Miramax parent company Disney unwilling to do anything with the film for fear of stepping on the toes of Miramax's eventual buyer. As Tadjedin put it they caught a lucky break when Disney allowed them to take the film to the Toronto International Film Festival last fall, where it was the closing night gala and where Tribeca Film-- the company behind the New York festival and a new distributor-- sparked to the movie set in their neighborhood. Tribeca Film is releasing Last Night now theatrically (it expands wider this Friday) and on-demand.

I caught up with Tadjedin at the tail end of the Tribeca Film Festival and asked her about the headaches of making a film only to see it sit unreleased for nearly two years. We also talked about how to tell a story about infidelity without judgment, how she built the film around Knightley (who she had worked with on the 2005 film The Jacket, which Tadjedin wrote) and why the central couple lives in an incredibly huge apartment by New York standards. You cast Sam Worthington well before Avatar came out. What did you see in him that made you want him on board?

I had seen him in this Australian film called Somersault with Abbie Cornish, and both of them had caught my eye. I sent Sam the script and met with him while he was shooting Avatar-- it was well before anyone knew Sam was going to go on and do these enormous films. He had great sympathy for the character of Michael, and I thought he would have a great married chemistry with Keira.

Because you had known her before this. Did you write the role with her in mind?

I hadn't written it for her, but I haven't yet written for people. I do sometimes write with people in mind. I think the Joanna I had in mind was somewhere between Julie Christie and Natalie Wood. I think my men tend to be written with Paul Newman in mind.

So you write for actors who can never do it.

But I had to persuade Keira to do it, and that anchored the casting process. They're not four roles you can cast simultaneously, because they're very chemistry dependent. A couple needs to have a certain texture to their relationship and their marriage that is very different from the physicality and the attraction with their respective others. So it's one at a time. Then Guillaume Canet I met first as a director. He was screening his film Tell No One. These things are so instinctive; I just thought, they will have great chemistry together. Eva, I met her and really thought she would be great in presenting Laura warmly.

It seems like you feel the need to defend that character, because she could be perceived as a homewrecker.

I do, because it's so easy to judge cheating when some of it is ostensibly seducing. When there is sexual cheating involved it's very easy to judge, because there's a clear line that's been crossed. Part of what the film is looking at is that there are degrees of everything. Sometimes there is a lack of awareness of our involvement with other people, what could be damaging or too intimate. It's so easy when you're watching or reading a story to just judge something. It puts that distance-- she's a vixen, she beelined for that man, that's just a person to avoid. And that's not how life works.

The movie occupies those spaces and really carefully observes the way the actors move around each other. How did you work with that chemistry and alter the film based on that?

I had never directed a film before, but you spend hours on a description or a line--and I still think having done this that it's extremely worthwhile, because that sentiment that you have written on the page and want revealed is passed on to the actor. Then when you go to set and the thing starts to breathe, and the people start to live in these bodies, they shorthand express it in a way that makes the three hours of work in the afternoon so unnecessary. You have a line and you know when you're shooting it, watching it up close, and you know that before they've delivered the line, their eyes have. The last look of the film, from Sam, it was scripted as a question-- "What did you do last night?" But it never felt honest when he asked it, because his eyes had already asked it.

Did you ever write any more of the scene between Keira and Guillaume? Their scenes together seem less written.

No, their scenes were like that. I think I cut a little bit of Michael and Laura, because we were able to get some of their tension from looks. But that was all scripted. We knew when were rehearsing, the chemistry the two of them [Keira and Guillaume] had, that the conversations would feel familiar to them.

Michael and Joanna live in this really gorgeous downtown apartment-- they're really young and really rich. How did you choose to make them that way?

First of all, the apartment was really hard to find. We looked for the apartment for three weeks and we came down to the wire. I still stand by the choice, but having said that, we were always concerned about how this would translate to the screen. We were trying not to have them be uber-weatlhy, just a successful working couple. But there are logistical concerns. We needed access for an elevator, space to fit the crew-- it was always important to me in that apartment for there to be enough corners and places in the apartment to show how these two have inhabited this space. What corners are hers, what corners are his. There's not a lot of history in the film. The history is really in the flea market furniture that belongs to them, the TV that belongs to him but not to her. But at the same time she's claimed a whole corner of the apartment for her books and stuff. But it is a larger apartment, and I wonder if we had an extra week to look… But it is important that this be like life that we know it, not as a very rarefied couple in New York knows it.

There's a consistent look to this movie that just feels like downtown New York-- the Soho House, the neighbor's apartment, the loft party.

We wanted it to feel like life right now in downtown New York. And I love when you watch films from the 70s and 80s and get a glimpse of what it meant to live at that time, or even if it's not the everyday life of most of us at that time, what the aesthetics of that tie were. And I also wanted it to have a timelessness in terms of the decor and look of the film. I didn't wants it to be hyper trendy. I wanted this film to look relevant.

Wasn't there a point where you thought it might only be released on DVD?

We really had no idea how or if it was going to come out. Occe a year is passed everyone is generally concerned. And there was the question of it coming out in Europe, and that makes me very worried, because everything is so immediately online. Everything is so easy to get your hands on. . The thing I think I learned on this, and it was a good thing to learn, is that there is no point at which you are certain of the outcome. So you have to take the enjoyment and satisfaction that you can int he making of it and trust that it will find its way.

Was the warm reception at Toronto a huge relief for you?

What was great about Toronto is that we hadn't seen the film with an audience. To see it at Roy Thompson Hall, just to watch it with a group of people after that long wait, it was hugely rewarding. The biggest thing you have when you finish the film is, "Is anyone going to get this?" You write something and direct it and wonder, is anyone going to get what we were trying to say? And you don't really get that until you sit with an audience.

VOD is so crucial for films like this, being so small and getting seen. I think the intimacy of this film really works for that format, but since no filmmaker ever makes a movie with TV in mind, I wonder how you feel about that.

It's all very new to me, so I'm interested in seeing how it goes. It is very satisfying to watch it with an audience for me, because you get to see the collective resistance or anxiety about what these characters are doing. But I do watch films by myself alone in my house, a lot, and this being available to watch that way is a good thing. I grew up in Yorba LInda, and we didn't have a movie theater in Yorba Linda. We had one theater in Anaheim, and it didn't have the movies that I was dying to see. And I would have to wait a very long time for those films to come and be available on VHS. I think then I really would have appreciated. My 14-year-old self would have been able to see this movie.

With the Tribeca Film Festival about a month away, promotion has begun for Last Night starring Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last fall and has been making its way around the world festival by festival for about six months before being picked up for release by Miramax and Tribeca itself, which will release the film on-demand on April 25, about two weeks before the theatrical release.

This new trailer isn’t that much different than the trailer we saw a month ago, but it does away with the questionable title cards and adds a big fat Tribeca bumper to the front. Last Night looks like one of those well-done movies about love and relationships that just makes you want to bang your head against the wall in frustration and depression. It is one of those movies that reminds you that even when you’re in a happy marriage, someone could come along who is better and either steal you or your spouse away.

Considering that Len Wiseman's Total Recall is set to start filming in May, the good folks behind the project may want to do something about casting. Guaranteed to be a high profile project - and one with a lot of components - Colin Farrell is the only name currently attached. Though we know that the story will be changed a bit from the 1990 Paul Verhoven version, going by the first film they still need to find actors to play the villainous Cohaagen and Richter, Benny, and George/Kuato, but it looks like they are starting with the women.

Deadline has received a list of actresses vying for the two lead female roles in the film. First there is Lori, played by Sharon Stone in the Verhoven flick, who is Quaid's wife who actually ends up trying to kill him. According to the site, both Kate Bosworth and Diane Kruger are being brought in to test for the role this week. As for the Melina, Quaid's ally and former lover who helps him free the people of Mars, Eva Mendes and Paula Patton are both reading for the part, though Jessica Biel and Eva Green are also possible options (Mendes is being considered for the part of Lori as well).

Not a bad list of actresses if you ask me (though I will admit some options are better than others). I've mentioned before that I am at least slightly curious how they will approach the story, and it appears that they are going at it with the best cast they can get. We'll be sure to report as we get more information.

Thanks to the complicated sale of Miramax, two upcoming titles - Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and Last Night - have been caught in limbo. Recently, however, the tide has turned and both projects have seen forward motion, the former recently getting an August 12 release date and the latter landing a distribution deal. In celebration, we now have the second trailer for Last Night.

Posted by Miramax on their YouTube page, Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington play a married couple who suddenly find themselves in dangerous situations. Worthington is on a business trip with his beautiful co-worker, played by Eva Mendes and Knightly runs into an old flame, played by Guillaume Canet. Set over the course of one night, the question is whether or not they can resist temptation and stay loyal to each other.

The closing credits of The Other Guys contain several surprises. The one you’re going to hear people talking about most over the next few days are a series of animated graphics illustrating the way we were all pretty much robbed by corporate thieves during the economic collapse. The animation is actually really well done and incredibly informative, distilling the way we’re all pretty much screwed in a way that, hopefully the common man can finally understand. Unfortunately it feels completely out of place at the end of something that’s supposed to be a comedy.

Also surprising, but perhaps far less so, is the end credits song you’ll hear while the Wall Street animation plays. It’s called “Pimps Don’t Cry” and it’s sung by Eva Mendes. Eva Mendes can sing? Yeah I had no idea either. In the film Eva Mendes plays the super-hot wife whose beauty Will Ferrell can’t see, and while the end credits animation isn’t online (at least not yet) Eva’s song is, complete with an accompanying video which reveals yet another Eva Mendes shocker: She can’t dance. At least it doesn’t seem like she can. The video features Eva singing while engaging in a series of herky, jerky movements. It’s weird. Take a look:

Eva Mendes has never been an actress to stick to genres. She’s done action (2 Fast 2 Furious), drama (We Own The Night, Out Of Time) and comedy (Hitch, The Women), and has looked stunning in each one. Her new film, the Adam McKay/Will Ferrell movie The Other Guys, not only blends the action and comedy genres, but allows her to look her hottest.

I got the chance to sit down with Ms. Mendes (as well as her giant dog which happened to be sitting on the couch right next to her) and talked about what it was like working with her dream director, the atmosphere on set, and what its like to sing “Pimps Don’t Cry” to Will Ferrell. Check it out below.

Going into this film were you a fan of Ferrell and McKay’s work and how did you come to be involved with the film?

First of all, you have to understand that Adam McKay is my Scorsese. Anchorman, to me, was a perfect, perfect comedy. It’s so layered and it’s an amazing film. [The American Film Institute], a few years ago, asked me what the best film of all time was and everyone was saying The Bicycle Thief or Citizen Kane or something, and I was like Anchorman! So I’ve been wanting to be a part of this team for a while. I think, actually, McKay had read that I said that on AFI or the website or something and then he requested to meet with me. So I had lunch with him and Chris Henchy, the other writer, it is was just like we were done. We got along, I totally got it, I was in with the joke, I get it, it’s cool. I just want to do more and more films with them.

Are there plans to do another film?

Oh, on my end there are. I have a ton of plans for more.

In the film your character is so insanely beautiful that Mark Wahlberg’s character find’s it impossible to believe that you are married to Will Ferrell’s character. What does that kind of role do for your self-esteem?

What I liked about the film is that I get to play with that a little bit because the person who I want to think I’m most attracted to is my husband, played by Will Ferrell, and he says, “Eh, she’s cute. She’s not hot, she’s cute.” And I thought that was really funny and great and I still don’t think it’s far fetched for me to be playing his wife. I think in that setting it is because he plays such a boring, paper cop, but Will Ferrell’s wife is very beautiful. We love funny guys, girls love funny guys.

What was the atmosphere like on set? Obviously you’ve run the gamut from comedy to action to drama, so what was it like on this set and how did it differ from other films you’ve worked on?

There was an ease on this set that I’ve never experienced before. They really supported me and encouraged me to be my best, and that doesn’t always happen. You’d be surprised when you work with some very big male stars they want you to be good but not necessarily great – in cases. With this film they wanted me to just soar. So any suggestion I had they’d be like, “let’s try it!” And a lot of things didn’t make the movie, but that’s not the point here [laughs]. The point is that they were amazing as far as really, really encouraging me to try everything and be as funny as I can be.

You say that you contributed ideas, how much room was there for improvisation?

So much improve, oh yeah. Because I also have that mentality where it’s sink or swim and I’m not going to sink. So I’d get in there with the guys and then be like, “okay, it’s on!” And Ferrell, you know that he’s the master, he’s improv king. So I had to hang in there with him and I did.

Did you get the sense that you had to keep up with him?

Oh yeah and I loved it because it was challenging and just so fun. Fun stuff.

How many takes would you do on average, such as the first dinner scene with you, Ferrell and Wahlberg?

So many takes, but it’s hard to say because they shoot different angles and they always had two cameras and stuff. But, a lot. Enough to where you’re having so much fun and you’re getting different stuff every time. And, honestly, I was shocked to see how long they would let the camera roll. They would just let it roll and roll and roll. Normally it’s “time is money” on the set and everything is so valuable and precious, but there’s a sense that they know what’s precious and what’s precious for McKay is the performance. He knows that a lot of time, in those moments, you gotta let that camera roll so those moments can happen.

You do a bit of singing in this movie. What was that kind of experience like?

It’s terrible. Well, that scene was really tough to do, even though I only sing a couple lines, it was very tough because you actually have to look into [Will’s] eyes and start singing “Pimps Don’t Cry.” That’s just ridiculous. You really don’t get more ridiculous than that. And so, with that I was just like, “Oh, God,” because it’s just insane, but, at the end, it was actually my first time going to a recording studio, with the great John Bryant, and we recorded the song which was so much fun.

Do you have a favorite scene from the film and a favorite moment from on-set?

I think one of my favorite things about the movie is this whisper fighting. I think that’s amazing. I think that’s so funny, and they all commit so wholeheartedly and I love that. And as far as being on set, just the experience of being there with “Crazy Brains” McKay. He’s amazing. I just think he’s so incredibly intelligent and you can’t be that funny without being smart. Not the way he is, and he is an intelligent man. One of my favorite parts is just him sitting behind the monitor, and I’ll be in the scene, and he’d just yell out random things for me to say and I love that so much.
