In the Extraction movies, which you can watch with a Netflix subscription, Chris Hemsworth's Tyler Rake takes on a host of missions that nearly kill him. And, given those wild assignments, Hemsworth himself has to be in shape to perform a number of those feats on set. Well, with Extraction 3 on the way, the leading man is training for his reprisal. It's true that Hemsworth has put on muscle before but, after seeing the training video he recently shared, I'm amazed by how ripped he appears to be.

Chris Hemsworth is letting his nearly 60 million Instagram followers know that he’s ready to do what it takes to surpass the bar that he and director Sam Hargrave have previously set for the Extraction franchise. To pull it off believably, the Thor actor is sweating it out in a training session in Costa Rica, a couple weeks prior to the start of production on the threequel, and it hurts my body just to watch. It goes without saying that you shouldn’t just jump in and try out his regimen, as the Transformers One actor is no stranger to extreme physical training. Anyone who's a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you likely know about the amount of work Hemsworth put into training for Avengers: Doomsday, in which he’s reprising his role as the God of Thunder for the first time since 2022. Or you may have also seen Hemsworth do crazy stunts like jumping off of cliffs in Mallorca while there to shoot Season 2 of his Nat Geo series, Limitless.

Back to Hemsworth's Extraction 3 prep, though, what he calls a “minimal equipment program” is not minimal in effort or expectation. I can appreciate that he’s able to do two rounds of the various exercises with only a two-minute rest in between, as I would likely end up in the hospital with weeks of bed rest to recover. The Aussie actor uses resistance bands and kettlebells to complete curls, reverse fly exercises and other movements with the sole purpose of preparing him for all the action.

It certainly seems like Hemsworth's managed to figure out the most effective way to be ready to return to the role of Tyler Rake in a matter of weeks. I'm intrigued by the notion of what Hemsworth and Hargrave will bring to this latest installment.

The first Extraction film hit streaming milestones when it was released in 2020 and further expanded its franchise popularity with a sequel, leading to demand for a third installment. Considering the massive action sequences featured, fans are surely expecting a lot. (Some may still be thinking about that one-shot sequence from Extraction 2.)

Despite that, I won't doubt Hemsworth, Hargrave and their collaborators, including Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani, who are also set to reprise their roles in Extraction 3. A release date has yet to be confirmed for the film but, in the meantime, check out Hemsworth and his muscles in Avengers: Doomsday, which opens on December 18th as part of the 2026 movie schedule.

Even though the past several years have certainly had lots of new movies for action fans to enjoy, many people are still waiting for positive updates on the Chris Hemsworth franchise that last released a sequel three years ago: Extraction. Those with a Netflix subscription have been promised Extraction 3 since shortly after the release of the second film in 2023, but now the movie has taken an exciting step forward.

What’s The Latest Update On Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction 3 Say?

Movie lovers know that it can sometimes take quite a while for a film to go from greenlight to premiere, but even with that, many fans probably thought that we would at least be able to watch Extraction 3 sometime during the 2026 movie release schedule. Unfortunately, that’s unlikely to happen, but it’s looking a lot more likely that it will become one of our highly anticipated upcoming action movies before too much longer, now that we’ve gotten an exciting update about filming.

A recent report from What’s On Netflix says that the latest sequel finally has a set production start for sometime in June 2026, with filming being planned to run through early October. On top of that, the proceedings are based in Sydney, Australia, which will keep Hemsworth close to family and “Fortress Hemsworth” for much of the shoot, while there will be some filming in Europe over the summer.

As you can probably imagine, one thing that has, inadvertently, held up production is the Tyler Rake star, whose work as a cinematic charmer (though he feels like “a fraud” sometimes doing it) in other films, including his continuing commitment to the MCU have kept him a very busy man. In fact, the December update from director Sam Hargrave noted that the actor’s Thor schedule at the time put filming dates for Extraction 3 up in the air a bit, though he was hoping to start sometime this year.

Hemsworth, like many of his MCU cohorts, have been very busy working on the upcoming Marvel movie known as Avengers: Doomsday, which is due out by the end of this year. It’s also been intimated that he’ll probably reprise Thor for Avengers: Secret Wars, which is due out in December 2027 and needs to start filming this year to hit that target.

We don’t know for sure how much of the actor we’ll see in either superhero team-up movie, but with a super secretive production process that sometimes involves the actors not fully knowing who they’re working with beforehand or when they’re even completely done with filming, you can bet that it’s a relatively complicated undertaking that can be very time consuming.

However, as long as the Extraction threequel begins when expected, we could see Hemsworth in both movies next year, which would be great news for fans.

Making movies is tough business. Lots of film ideas never even get made, while others eventually happen but still take years before anything ever happens. It’s been more than a decade and a half since the first Avatar film, and we’re not even halfway through with those franchise plans. But now it feels like Chris Hemsworth’s much smaller action franchise Extraction may take almost as long.

Chris Hemsworth's Extraction (available with a Netflix subscription) was a solid action movie that was successful enough that it spawned a sequel. Extraction 2 came out three years after the first film, which is just about right for a sequel like that. Extraction 3 was confirmed almost immediately after the success of part two, which implied we’d see it in short order, but that’s not looking like the case.

Chris Hemsworth made comments about a year ago that Extraction 3 was expected to go into production this year, which would have put the movie likely coming out in 2026. However, a year later, franchise director Sam Hargrave told Collider that he hopes for the movie to start filming next year, which might put the film out the year after that. He said…

Honestly, this sounds like what James Cameron would say about Avatar 2 whenever he was asked, and that movie took over a decade to actually happen. It’s clearly uncertain at this point if Extraction 3 will film this year, which means it all being pushed back by another year is distinctly possible.

It sounds like the major stumbling block is the production of Avengers: Secret Wars. The follow-up to Avengers: Doomsday is currently set to release in December 2027, and while we don’t know when production on that movie will start, it will likely be sometime next spring (a year after the production of Doomsday began) as the film will come out a year after that movie.

The question is how much Chris Hemsworth will be needed for Secret Wars, and that may not be something anybody even knows yet, as we don’t know if the script is even done. Assuming Hargrave knows at least a little, this would seem to indicate that Hemsworth will at least be in Secret Wars. This is something which is far from certain, considering many fans are wondering if Thor might be about to die in the MCU, something Hemsworth himself inadvertently touched off.

If Thor does continue to move forward, then we also need to consider the possibility that Hemsworth could be needed for other MCU films after Secret Wars. If he is, that might delay Extraction 3 even more. I guess we’ll just have to keep waiting.

Fans of the Extraction films starring Chris Hemsworth got some good news about the franchise earlier this year, although not in the form of a continuation in the form of Extraction 3. A television spinoff is happening to expand the world of the films, and there are finally some casting updates beyond Omar Sy as leading man. Game of Thrones vet Natalie Dormer landed a role, just days after another star was announced.

Dormer will be a series regular on Extraction, according to Deadline, to play the leader of a private military contractor by the name of Clayton Wisper. This will be Dormer's second project for Netflix, although it's a safe bet that working on the series will be a lot more intense than her voice work on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. (The Dark Crystal show was cancelled in 2020.)

The actress is likely still best known for portraying Margaery Tyrell on Game of Thrones, with Dormer's character actually in more episodes than heavy-hitters like Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) and Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley).

Netflix describes the project as an "action thriller" following a mercenary on a risky mission in Libya to rescue hostages, stuck between killers and factions at war. It won't be all action, however, and the story unfolding as a TV show rather than a movie means that there will be more time for character development than could happen in either of the films.

The spinoff comes from showrunner, executive producer, and writer Glen Mazzara (known for shows like The Walking Dead and The Shield), with the Russo Brothers of MCU fame on board as executive producers.

While the Extraction show certainly won't be ready in time for a premiere in the 2025 TV schedule, there's more encouraging news about the progress so far. Boyd Holbrook has been cast to play an Extraction team leader named David Ibarra, according Deadline, as a series regular.

Like Dormer, Holbrook has worked on Netflix productions before, including Narcos opposite stars like Wagner Moura, The Last of Us' Pedro Pascal, and Andor's Diego Luna. More recently, he wrapped his time as part of The Sandman cast with the series finale in July.

Natalie Dormer and Boyd Holbrook star opposite The Killer and Jurassic World: Dominion's Omar Sy, who was the only cast member confirmed when the Extraction spinoff was announced in early 2025. (Sy also has Netflix credits to his name with three seasons of Lupin.)

Now, if you're a fan of the Extraction films (both of which are available streaming now with a Netflix subscription), you may notice that I'm not listing Chris Hemsworth or any other names from the movies. At the time of writing, it's not clear how closely tied the show will be to the stories of Tyler Rake (Hemsworth), if at all.

For now, you can always revisit the two movies streaming on Netflix, and keep your eyes peeled for any more casting news to come out of the show in the weeks to come.

The mere mention of the title Extraction sees fans automatically wanting to add the number 3 behind that title. With Chris Hemsworth previously teasing a three-quel in development in 2023, the wait has been a bit of a struggle for people who want Tyler Rake to do his thing again. Young Adam is dealing with the loss of his dad in addition to school bullies, and this movie gives us plenty of laughs, tons of heart and an idea of what a smart-mouthed Ryan Reynolds might have been like as a tween.

Bird Box

Bird Box was an absolute phenomenon in 2018, with Sandra Bullock starring as Malorie Hayes, a woman trying to protect herself and two children in a post-apocalyptic world full of entities that caused death to those who looked at them. The movie became Netflix's most-watched film (at the time) within 28 days of its release and remains one of the streamer's most popular flicks.

Leave The World Behind

Netflix audiences sure do seem to like an apocalyptic thriller, and that proved true again in 2023 with Leave the World Behind. The movie starred Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke as the Sandfords, who were guests at the vacation rental owned by Mahershala Ali's G.H. Scott at the start of the end of the world. Sam Esmail's film is a tense statement on racism, class bias and, somehow, our obsession with Friends reruns.

The Gray Man

In The Gray Man, an action thriller from the Russo Brothers, Ryan Gosling stars as the CIA operative known as Sierra Six. The agent uncovers some dark secrets about his employers, putting him on the run from a former colleague and a network of international assassins. The film is considered one of the best action movies of 2022, thanks in part to Chris Evans' deliciously villainous turn as Lloyd Hansen.

We Can Be Heroes

We Can Be Heroes struck a chord with Netflix viewers of all ages, as it was both a standalone superhero film but also a sort-of legacy sequel to the 2005 movie The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. The flick was a huge hit for Netflix, as the children of famous superheroes are tasked with working together to save their parents, who have been kidnapped by aliens.

Purple Hearts

Streamers beware! Purple Hearts left viewers emotionally wrecked when the romantic drama hit Netflix. Nicholas Galitzine stars as Luke Morrow, a recovering addict and Marine being deployed to Iraq, and Sofia Carson as Cassie Salazar, a type 1 diabetic who has to work multiple jobs in order to afford insulin. Despite having just met, Cassie and Luke decide to get married for the benefits, and it would be a shame for me to spoil the emotional roller coaster that follows by saying anything more.

The Unforgivable

Sandra Bullock has had her share of streaming movie success on Netflix, and in 2021's The Unforgivable, she portrayed Ruth Slater, a woman who has just finished serving a 20-year prison sentence for killing a sheriff who tried to evict her and her then-5-year-old sister Katie from their home. Upon her release, she sets out to reconnect with Katie.

The Irishman

Even Martin Scorsese jumped on the Netflix bandwagon with his 2019 gangster film The Irishman, which starred Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel, among others. The film racks up plenty of streaming minutes with its 209-minute runtime, but the 10 Academy Award nominations don't hurt either.

The Kissing Booth 2

In the rare instance of a sequel being better than the original, The Kissing Booth 2 surpassed its predecessor in popularity with its Summer 2020 release. Joey King returned in the sequel as Elle Evans, along with Joel Courtney and Jacob Elordi as Lee and Noah Flynn. This time around Elle and Noah were navigating a long-distance relationship as Elle struggled to choose where her future would take her.

6 Underground

Not only is 6 Underground one of Netflix's most-watched movies, it's also one of the streamer's most expensive. The Michael Bay action thriller had a reported budget of $150 million and starred Ryan Reynolds as one member of a group of vigilantes who fake their death in hopes of taking down a ruthless dictator. Despite success on the streaming platform, a planned sequel was scrapped due to not-so-positive reviews.

Spenser Confidential

Spenser Confidential was a pretty by-the-book buddy copy movie, but Mark Wahlberg and Winston Duke drew people in as former Boston police officer Spenser and aspiring MMA fighter Duke, respectivly. Spenser gets Duke to help investigate the murder of two ex-co-workers, one of whom the former was suspected of killing.

Enola Holmes

In Enola Holmes, Millie Bobby Brown portrays the little sister of famous detective Sherlock Holmes. Brown is charming and funny in this action-packed flick and audiences liked it so much that Netflix ordered more.

Roma

Alfonso Cuarón’s 2018 drama Roma won three Academy Awards of the 10 it was nominated for, so it's so surprise that this Netflix original is popular amongst viewers. Shot in black and white, Roma does tackle some tough themes in its tale of a Mexico City housekeeper in the 1970s, but the performances are amazing, especially those of Marina de Tavira and Yalitza Aparicio.

Army Of The Dead

Army of the Dead is what happens when you take Zack Snyder, throw in some Ocean's Eleven and sprinkle in a healthy dose of zombies. Who could resist that? Why would you want to?

The Old Guard

Another film that likely got a streaming boost from the pandemic days was The Old Guard. Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne are among the stars of this comic book adaptation, which received critical praise for its plentiful action and portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters.

Murder Mystery

Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler play a married couple in the comedy Murder Mystery, which, yes, is also a murder mystery. Nick and Audrey find themselves in the middle of a complex family situation after being invited to a party on a billionaire's yacht, and it gets even more complicated when that billionaire winds up dead.

Troll

Two years after its release in 2022, Troll boasted the most views of any non-English Netflix original. The Norwegian monster movie follows a motley crew of people who must work together against an ancient troll that was awoken in the mountains.

Blood Red Sky

Vampires meet plane heist in the 2021 action-crime-horror-vampire-thriller Blood Red Sky, which sees an ailing woman going up against a group of terrorists attempting to hijack an overnight flight. The movie was viewed 50 million times in its first month, making it the streamer's most successful German title.

Society Of The Snow

For fans of survival films, Society of the Snow chronicles the true story of a rugby team from Uruguay whose Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes mountains in 1972. The film was nominated for Oscars in the categories of Best International Feature Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The Platform

Making statements on imprisonment, class and poverty, the dystopian thriller The Platform sees a man voluntarily check himself into a prison where inmates are housed in vertical cells and fed once a day via a platform. The platform is filled with food at the top, but less and less is available to each inmate the further it descends.

All Quiet On The Western Front

The 2022 war epic All Quiet on the Western Front was the third adaptation of the 1929 novel of the same name. The Netflix original was the most successful version, too, boasting seven British Academy Film Awards from 14 nominations and four Academy Awards from nine nods among its many accolades.

Hustle

Adam Sandler may be known for his comedy, but Netflix audiences have learned not to sleep on his more dramatic turns either. Hustle features the Sandman as Stanley Sugerman, a down-on-his-luck NBA scout who longs to be a coach. Stanley finds a player in Spain who might just earn him the respect he deserves, but getting Bo Cruz (played by real-life professional basketball player Juancho Hernangómez) ready for the NBA draft turns out to be more challenging than he anticipated.

Extraction 2

Chris Hemsworth's first go as Tyler Rake was a big win for Netflix, so imagine the delight of audiences to discover that Extraction 2 was even more thrilling. The black ops mercenary is back on another mission, and this one is wall-to-wall action, including an iconic prison break scene that's edited into a 21-minute, action-packed one-shot.

The Man From Toronto

An action-comedy starring Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson, The Man from Toronto may not have gotten the most positive reviews, but that didn't stop Netflix subscribers from hitting Play to see the hilarity that ensued when an assassin and a screw-up were mistaken for each other at a vacation rental.

The Tinder Swindler

It's hard to resist a good true crime story, and The Tinder Swindler was all the rage when it hit Netflix. The documentary explored the story of Simon Leviev, who connected with people on Tinder and swindled them into giving him money by saying he needed to escape his enemies.

Luther: The Fallen Sun

It's no secret why Luther: The Fallen Sun struck a chord with Netflix viewers, as Idris Elba reprised his role from the popular series Luther for a Netflix film continuation. Co-starring Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis, The Fallen Sun sees the titular detective attempting to stop a wealthy serial killer.

There are a lot of comic publishers out there, and some really great movies have been adapted from their works. While the film and TV world may be dominated mostly by two companies, Marvel and DC, these movies hold their own against any movie adapted from the Big Two. Here are 32 great examples of movies adapted from comic books that aren't Marvel or DC. 

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

When Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird first conceived and published the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book for Mirage Studios, they never could've foreseen the wild success of the media franchise the book turned into. The original indie comic, first hitting shelves in 1984 was dark, and all in black and white. Still, it was an underground hit that soon moved into the streets as a phenomenon. 

Hellboy

2004's Hellboy, based on the Dark Horse Comics book by the same name, is one of the most beloved comic book movies of all time, especially one not adapted from a Marvel or DC story. Starring Ron Pearlman as the titular character and directed by Guillermo del Toro, the movie was a big enough hit to spawn a sequel in 2009. Sadly, a third movie completed the trilogy never got off the ground, and a more recent attempt to reboot the series bombed in 2019. 

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

During its initial run in theaters, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, starring Michael Cera as Pilgrim, was a disappointment. As testament to the original material, a series published by Oni Press, the movie quickly gained cult status and today has fans all over the world. 

Sin City

Creator Frank Miller is a legend in the comic book industry. His first hits came working for DC, but after building his reputation, he struck out from DC and began releasing his books through Dark Horse. One of those, Sin City, was a huge success and led to the film adaptation with an all-star cast in 2005. 

Dredd

Judge Dredd is one of the most popular comic book anti-heroes outside of Marvel and DC. The series he comes from 2000 AD, first published in 1977 by IPC Magazines, was a hit and two movie adaptations based on the dystopian future cop have been made. The first, 1995 Judge Dredd starring Sylvester Stallone, is not all that great, but the second, 2012 Dredd starring The Boys star Karl Urban, is excellent. 

The Crow

1994's The Crow is sadly remembered for the on-set fatality of its star, Brandon Lee, and fewer people recognize that it was adapted from a comic book series published by Caliber Comics. Three more sequels have also been produced and in 2024, 30 years after The Crow's release, the series was rebooted on film. 

300

Dark Horse publishing has turned itself into a comic book publishing force in the last 40 years and one of the biggest reasons why is the work of artist and writer Frank Miller. His 300, adapted in 2006 and starring Gerard Butler, was a huge hit with director Zach Snyder earning praise for the style of the film, which was very much in keeping with its origins as a comic. 

Weird Science

Okay, pardon the pun, but this is a weird one. John Hughes' 1985 teen comedy classic Weird Science was actually loosely based on a comic book. Weird Science comics, published by EC Magazines in the early '50s only ran for 22 issues, but one "Made of the Future" by Al Feldstein, told the story of a man who creates a woman from a computer. Wild. 

Spawn

Todd McFarlane's Image Comics is the third largest publisher in the comic book world and you can count Spawn as a major reason why. The movie adaptation in 1997 of the same name wasn't a big hit, but the comics will always be classics. 

Men In Black

Aircel Comics was eventually swallowed up by Marvel in the 1990s, but before that happened, it published five issues of its Men In Black series. Once the series was adapted for the first time in 1997 (after Marvel owned it), it would become one of the biggest franchises of the last three decades. 

The Kingsman Series

The publishing history of the Kingsman series is a little convoluted. It does involve Marvel, but Image Comics and Dark Horse have also published books, so we're going to fudge a little here because it's such a fun franchise, both in print on the big screen, we had to include it. 

Heavy Metal

1981's Heavy Metal directed by Ivan Reitman is one of the best animated movies for adults ever made. It was adapted using stories from the legendary Heavy Metal magazine that ran for nearly 50 years before ending in 2023. 

Atomic Blonde

2016's Atomic Blonde, a Cold War-era spy thriller was adapted from a character in a comic book called The Coldest City by Antony Johnston, first published by Oni Press in 2012. The movie, starring Charlize Theron, was a critical success and performed modestly at the box office. 

Timecop

As Jean-Claude Van Damme movies go, Timecop is pretty decent. Released in 1994 and based on a comic book of the same name from Dark Horse, it was a successful hit and launched a moderate franchise with a short-lived TV show and a straight-to-video sequel. 

The Killer

2023's The Killer, directed by David Fincher and starring Michael Fassbender was based on a long-running French comic by the same name. The first volume, published in 1998, led to many more over the years before Netflix commissioned the movie. 

Dıck Tracy

So this entry is a bit of a stretch, because Dick Tracy was technically a comic strip first, though the character has appeared in comic books since the 1930s. The first adaptation of the hard-boiled detective was a radio show, also in the '30s. In 1990 Warren Beatty adapted the character for the big screen to big office success. 

Sabrina the Teenage Witch

The most famous adaptation of the Archie Comics' Sabrina The Teen Age Witch was the TV show starring Melissa Joan Hart as the titular spell caster. The show started as a made-for-TV movie starring Hart and Ryan Reynolds in one of his earliest roles. It aired first aired on Showtime in 1996 before moving to ABC as a TV show later that year. The show ran for seven successful seasons. 

The Rocketeer

Years before Disney reached the dizzying heights of the Avengers movies, the House of Mouse tried to find a hit with The Rocketeer. Based on the 1981 comic of the same name, with a character that paid homage to the heroes of the 1930s. Sadly, the movie was a commercial failure, but fans of the movie still praise it to this day. 

Flash Gordon

The character Flash Gordon first hit American newspapers as a comic strip in the 1930s. Over the years, stories of the space-traveling hero have been adapted into every medium imaginable, including serial movies in the 1930s, novels, radio shows, a TV show, a musical, and of course, comic books. The 1980 movie is a wonderfully bizarre adaptation that quickly gained a cult following.

Oldboy

Japanese magazine Futabasha started publishing the serialized story Old Boy in the late '90s and in 2003 Park Chan-wook-directed a phenomenal adaptation in South Korea. It's a dark story, as Japanese magna often is, but it's fantastic. A less-well-received remake by Spike Lee in 2013 isn't as good. 

Tank Girl

In one of the most notorious examples of a movie failing to live up to the expectations of fans, 1995's Tank Girl starring Lori Petty was a commercial and critical failure. Fans hated the movie as they did not think it carried the spirit of the character. The comic, first published by Deadline in the UK, continues to be very popular with fans well into the 21st Century. 

Mystery Men

1999's Mystery Men bombed at the box office and that's really too bad because it's really a fun movie. Based on the surrealist comic Flaming Carrot Comics, it featured an all-star cast as superhero rejects and has-beens that come together to fight evil. It's funny, and sweet, and really much better than its box office receipts show. 

Akira

There is no more famous and popular anime than Akira. The original 1988 film was based on a manga first published in Weekly Young Magazine in Japan, then later imported to the US by Marvel. Akira is one of the most surprising examples of an enduring property that somehow hasn't become one of the biggest franchises on earth.  

The Mask

Sometimes it seems like people forget just how huge 1995's The Mask really was. It made over ten times over its budget in theaters and solidified Jim Carrey as one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. For almost 25 years, that made it the most profitable comic book movie of all time until it was surpassed in 2019 by The Joker. It was also a great example of a comic book adaptation, as it was based on the 1991 comic of the same name printed by Dark Horse. 

Ghost World

Maybe the most surprising movie on this list is Ghost World. The 2001 movie doesn't feel like a comic book movie, but it was adapted from the cult classic comic of the same name. First published as a serialized story in Fantagraphics' Eightball, the movie didn't find an audience at first, but was lauded by critics and even got an Oscar nomination for best-adapted screenplay. It's since found its audience and is considered a cult classic. 

The Old Guard

Images Comics first published The Old Guard in 2017 and just three short years later, Netflix produced a movie based on it. Charlize Theron and Chiwetel Ejiofor lead a stellar cast in the movie that critics and fans loved setting it up for a sequel. 

Cowboys & Aliens

Platinum Studios is a fairly new comic book publisher whose work Cowboys & Aliens is the first movie adaptation of their characters. The movie, starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford was a commercial flop, but it's not the worst movie on this list and some critics praised it. 

Shortcomings

Rom-coms are not the genre you ever expect to be adaptations of comic books, but 2023's Shortcomings is just that. It's a movie that flew under the radar upon its release, but all you have to do is look at the reviews and see how that's too bad. It's a very well-made movie with enough "from" and "com," and ever drama, to make it worth a watch. It was adapted from a graphic novel of the same name, first published in 2007 by Optic Nerve Comics.

Robot Dreams

2023's Robot Dreams is a unique movie, based on a unique graphic novel. There is no dialog in either. Both, however, are a masterclass in wordless storytelling. The original book was published in 2007 to universal acclaim. It was even one of Oprah Winfrey's Book Club picks.

Extraction

Extraction is loosely based on Ciudad by graphic artist Ande Parks along with the Avengers: End Game directors the Russo Brothers, plus Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman. who also directed the film. The book was released in 2014 with the intention of turning into a movie, which happened in 2020 with Chris Hemsworth starring. 

Wanted

It's a bit surprising that Wanted, released in 2008 and starring Angelina Jolie, hasn't had a sequel. It was a success at the box office and has a lot of fans. Some of those fans go back to the original comic book, which was published as a limited series by Top Cow Productions, part of Image. 

From Hell

Alan Moore is one of the most revered comic book authors of all time. Many of his books have been adapted, including The Watchman, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and V is for Vendetta. All of those, however, were published by DC. A fourth adaption, actually the first, From Hell was based on a series published by Top Shelf Productions starting in 1989. It stars Johnny Depp Jack The Ripper investigator Frederick Abberline and tells the story of the investigation of those murders. 

We’ve come to know and love Chris Hemsworth as an action hero as he’s starred in numerous Marvel movies as Thor, led the Extraction franchise, and now he’s taking a spin in the Mad Max universe in Furiosa. However, there’s a lot of caution that comes with making these movies so they can pull off the big action. Now, the actor has opened up about his more dangerous hobbies and how doing one during Extraction’s production could have caused a serious problem for the film.

During an episode of Hot Ones, Chris Hemsworth was asked if he’s been contractually obligated to not do adventurous things outside of his work hours. He responded by saying yes, however, he admitted that he likes to live life on the edge: 

It’s no secret that Chris Hemsworth loves surfing. The Australian actor has uploaded surfing videos that make it look like he could take the sport up as a job, and he’s even posted about surfing sand dunes. The Hemsworth crew seems like an adventurous bunch, so it makes sense that the Extraction actor likes to continue surfing while shooting a movie. 

However, in the case of this story, he had a moment where he questioned his decision to go ride the waves, as he recalled this scary situation:

If he got injured it would have seriously impacted the production of Extraction. Since it’s an action film, he wouldn’t have been able to shoot the high-octane scenes, plus production as a whole probably would have been stopped as he healed because he’s the star of the movie. Or in another version of this, as he said in the interview (which you can watch below), if he had died it would have ended production entirely. 

Luckily, nothing bad happened, and Chris Hemsworth obviously lived to tell the tale. 

Since making Extraction (which you can stream with a Netflix subscription), he’s gone on to make a sequel and Hemsworth confirmed that talks were happening about Extraction 3 about a year ago. Adding to this, the MCU star is keeping his action streak alive, because his newest film Furiosa, which was met with middling reviews, is premiering on the 2024 movie schedule on May 24. 

All around, Chris Hemsworth is keeping the action in both his personal and professional life, and luckily, even though he’s been in some potentially dangerous situations that could impact his work, he’s lived to keep working and tell the tales of his adventures. 

At this point, it’s clear that anything can be the basis for a new movie, but we’ve also learned that just about anything can inspire a good movie. We have good movies based on theme park rides, great movies based on video games, and even an amazing movie based on LEGO bricks. So the fact that a Matchbox film is on the way shouldn’t be that shocking, and honestly based on the director, it’s already looking like it could be incredible.

Extraction director Sam Hargrave has reportedly been tapped by Mattel, the current owner of Matchbox toy cars, and Skydance, who is set to produce the film. The Wrap reports that David Coggeshall, the writer behind the recent Mark Wahlberg action/comedy The Family Plan, and Jonathan Tropper, creator of the Warrior TV series, are working on the script.

There are no details of what the Matchbox movie will be, but based on the fact that the toy line is small die-cast cars and trucks, and the director of the movie is a former stuntman known for directing the Extraction action movie franchise for Netflix, we can expect that the movie is going to have lots of exciting automotive action. If it worked for The Fast & Furious there’s no reason to believe it can’t work here.

Bringing on Sam Hargrave certainly indicates the direction that a Matchbox movie is going. We can expect an action-heavy movie, likely with a lot of practical stunt work compared to CGI. The Extraction movies had some creative stunt work in their own right. Extraction 2 had a one-shot that set Chris Hemsworth on fire practically. One can imagine that sort of creativity set toward an automotive-based action movie could invent some cool stuff to watch on a movie screen.

Maybe the film will try to break the recent world record set by The Fall Guy, which created the longest canon roll in movie history. For a certain type of action movie fan, like me, that’s going to sound like a fantastic place for a movie to start, regardless of what the IP behind it all is.

Matchbox was previously a competitor of the better-known Hot Wheels until Mattel purchased the Matchbox brand, and now owns both toy car lines. A Hot Wheels movie has been in development in the past, but we haven’t heard anything on that since last summer. Hot Wheels was looking for a director of its own, it looks like Matchbox beat it to the punch. It's unclear if both a Matchbox and Hot Wheels movie are in development simultaneously, or how the two projects, based on very similar products, would be substantially different.

While a Matchbox movie may be a film with a silly title, as one expects it will need to have the word Matchbox in there somewhere to make sure the potential audiences know it’s cashing on on the IP, there’s no reason to believe that a movie inspired by toy cars can’t be excellent. It certainly has the right director.

Few moviegoing experiences come close to watching a massive action flick on the big screen with a bucket full of popcorn, an overpriced soda, and whatever else you grab from the snack bar. However, over the past few years, we’ve seen a major shift in the way we watch movies, including new action films, in that so many of them go straight to streaming with no theatrical rollout (or a day-and-date release) to speak of. 

It isn’t all bad, as platforms like Netflix, Max, and Prime Video have given us some of the best action movies in recent memory. Here are some great action movies that went straight to streaming and became big hits on the small screen.

Road House (2024)

Though it was expected to land in theaters first, Doug Liman’s Road House remake went straight to streaming for its March 2024 release. Though it would have been great to watch Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor go at it on the big screen, being able to check it out from the comfort of your home on Prime Video wasn’t all that bad. In fact, it was great!

The Ice Road (2021)

Netflix holds it down with the straight-to-streaming action movies thanks to surprisingly fun watches like The Ice Road. Released in 2021, this ‘90s throwback starring Liam Neeson and Amber Midthunder follows a group of truckers on a daring rescue mission to save trapped miners before time runs out.  

The Tomorrow War (2021)

The 2021 Amazon original movie, The Tomorrow War, blends sci-fi, action, and comedy to create a wild cinematic experience with massive battles, time travel, and a lot of heart. In the film, Chris Pratt plays a biology professor and former Green Beret who is transported from 2022 to 2051 to save the world from alien invaders.

Extraction (2020)

One of the best action movies of 2020, Sam Hargrove’s Extraction follows former Australian Army SASR operator Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) as he is sent on a dangerous mission to rescue a drug lord’s son. This Netflix original, which Joe Russo penned, excelled in every possible way and gave us some wild sequences we’re still thinking about four years later.

The Gray Man (2022)

Netflix gave subscribers one of the best action films of 2022 with the release of The Gray Man, a massive spectacle starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans as two trained killers on opposite sides of a worldwide manhunt. Sure, there are some things that don’t work about the Russo brothers’ uber-expensive movie, but those crafty action sequences and that over-the-top performance by the Captain American actor were just so much fun.

The Night Comes For Us (2018)

We’ll probably never get The Raid 3, but Netflix gave us the next best thing in 2018 with the release of The Night Comes for Us. Directed by Timo Tjahjanto, this Indonesian action thriller saw outstanding performances by Joe Taslim and Iko Uwais in a story about a daring mission to rescue a kidnapped girl and one former criminal’s last shot at redemption. Those fight scenes are something else all these years later.

The Suicide Squad (2021)

One of the 2021 Warner Bros. movies released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad quickly became one of the best comic book movies in recent memory. With multi-faceted characters, bloody action, and a dynamic that feels like Guardians of the Galaxy with an R-rating, there’s just so much to love here.

The Old Guard (2020)

Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Old Guard, a 2020 Netflix adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name, was one of the most refreshing action films to come out during the early months of the pandemic. A story about a group of immortal soldiers fighting their way through time, clever set pieces, and a tremendous cast led by Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne made this one to remember.

My Spy (2020)

Released by Amazon after theaters around the world closed their doors because of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, My Spy saw Dave Bautista play a CIA agent who teams up with a young girl (played by Chloe Coleman) after she catches him spying on her family. Action, blackmail, hilarious conversations, and chemistry shared by its stars all work in My Spy’s favor.

Army Of The Dead (2021)

Zack Snyder went back to the world of horror with his 2021 Netflix original film, Army of the Dead. In the movie, which feels like Ocean’s Eleven with zombies, a group of mercenaries break into the quarantined Las Vegas strip to retrieve a boatload of cash while also trying to survive the legions of undead walking its streets and casinos.

The Harder They Fall (2021)

Jeymes Samuel’s star-studded Western action flick, The Harder They Fall, debuted on Netflix in October 2021 and immediately found an audience with the streamer’s subscriber base. Inspired by real figures of the American West, this story centers around an outlaw as he puts together his old crew to get revenge against a recently released convict and settle an old score.

Prey (2022)

One of the best additions to the Predator franchise, the Hulu original film, Prey, follows a Comanche warrior (played by Amber Midthunder) as she takes on a futuristic alien threat that is determined to wipe out her tribe. Using skills and weapons pioneered by her ancestors, this young yet fierce protector goes to war with the better-equipped predator.

Extraction 2 (2023)

Chris Hemsworth, Sam Hargrave, and Joe Russo returned for more action in Extraction 2 when the highly-anticipated sequel landed on Netflix in 2023. Set not long after the events of the first film, Tyler Rake (Hemsworth) is sent back into the field on what could be his most dangerous, and most personal, mission yet.

Without Remorse (2021)

Based on the Tom Clancy novel of the same name, Stefano Sollima’s 2021 Amazon original, Without Remorse sees Michael B. Jordan take on the role of US Navy Seal John Kelly, aka John Clark, one of the late writer’s most famous characters (second only to Jack Ryan). Following the brutal murder of his pregnant wife, the highly-trained soldier goes on a one-man revenge mission to right the wrongs of the world.

Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)

With intense and inventive fight scenes and commanding performances by Karen Gillan, Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, Lena Headey, and Chloe Coleman, the 2021 Netflix film, Gunpowder Milkshake is a ton of fun. After being tasked with protecting a young child, a lethal assassin turns to her mom and an elite squad of killers to see them through the dark night.

Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)

Those Who Wish Me Dead, a 2021 Warner Bros. movie that landed on HBO Max and in theaters on the same day, follows a troubled smokejumper (played by Angelina Jolie) as she tries to protect a young murder witness being hunted down by two psychotic killers deep in the Montana wilderness. This is a perfect action throwback for a Sunday afternoon.

Dune (2021)

Though it leans more towards science fiction than straight-up action, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is definitely going to do the trick. Released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously in October 2021, the first part of Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s epic novel is one of the most enchanting and awesome movies to come out in years.

Triple Frontier (2019)

With a cast that includes Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Pedro Pascal, Charlie Hunnam, and Garrett Hedlund, a story about a group of former soldiers pulling off a heist deep in South America, and some outrageous action, there’s a lot going for Triple Frontier. This 2019 Netflix action flick from J.C. Chandor has a certain petal-to-the-metal intensity that’s just so much fun to watch.

Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child Of Fire (2023)

The first part of Zack Snyder’s Netflix sci-fi saga, Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child Of Fire, is very much a space opera in the vein of Star Wars, but this isn’t to say it’s not an action movie, because it is. With a story that feels like something out of an Akira Kurosawa samurai film, and a lovable cast, and Snyder’s unique visual style, there’s a lot to enjoy.

Greyhound (2020)

If you like World War II movies and have an Apple+ subscription, then the Tom Hanks-led 2020 military thriller, Greyhound is going to be something you’ll want to check out. Though much shorter than other films set during the Second World War, this movie spends practically every second of its runtime showcasing awesome battle sequences at sea. Seriously, give it a watch.

Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)

After a lot of brouhaha, HBO Max became the home of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, aka, the definitive version of the DCEU crossover event, in March 2021. Clocking in at a little over four hours, this director’s cut expanded upon 2017’s Justice League and filled in all the gaps (and then some), giving fans all kinds of never-before-seen footage.

Kate (2021)

With less than 24 hours to live after taking a fatal poison, an experienced assassin (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) decides to use her final day among the living by going after those who harmed her. Cedric Nicolas-Troyan’s Kate landed on Netflix in September 2021 and gave audiences a riveting time with its action sequences, stunning visuals, and all kinds of twists and turns.

Mortal Kombat (2021)

Released by Warner Bros. in 2021, Mortal Kombat landed on HBO Max and in theaters on the same day, which gave millions of people instant access to one of the most violent video game movies ever made. Fan-favorite characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Liu Kang all had great portrayals while also giving us some bloody (and “toasty”) fatalities, which were so cool to watch.

Shotgun Wedding (2023)

It seems like the romantic action-comedy is making a comeback thanks to movies like Shotgun Wedding. Released by Amazon in 2023, the movie follows a soon-to-be-married couple (played by Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel) as their destination wedding turns into a hostage situation. With no one left to save their families from a group of crazed gunmen, the bride and groom go on the attack.

Role Play (2024)

The 2024 Amazon original, Role Play, which sort of has the same premise as True Lies, only the roles have been flipped, follows a secret assassin (played by Kaley Cuoco) as she tries to patch things over with her husband (played by David Oyelowo). However, when a romantic getaway and an intense mission happen at the same place at the same time, things go from bad to worse.

The Killer (2023)

David Fincher’s 2023 Netflix original, The Killer, spends more of its time sitting around and plotting with Michael Fassbender’s assassin than anything else, but there is some wonderful action sprinkled in throughout this book-to-screen adaptation. There’s one scene in particular about halfway through the movie that is more intense than just about every other action film released that year.

Damsel (2024)

If you’re looking for a more fantastical and adventurous action film, then Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s 2024 Netflix movie, Damsel, is going to be a good streaming option for you. The movie follows a young woman named Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown) as she discovers that the only reason she’s marrying a prince is to pay back an ancient debt. With freedom on her mind, the fearless heroine attempts to make a daring escape.

Black Widow (2021)

After a series of delays, Black Widow was finally released in July 2021, at which time it debuted in theaters and on Disney+ (through the Premier Access program). Set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War on the MCU timeline, the Scarlet Johannsson-led comic book movie focused more on action than superheroes, though there were plenty of acts of heroism to go around.

6 Underground (2019)

In 2019, Michael Bay teamed up with Netflix to release 6 Underground, an action thriller about a group of vigilantes that carry out a plot to depose a tyrannical dictator after faking their deaths. You’ll feel right at home if you’re a fan of Bay’s previous work, even more so if you’re a big Ryan Reynolds fan.

Infinite (2021)

Antoine Fuqua’s 2021 Paramount+ original film, Infinite, centers on Evan McCauley (Mark Wahlberg), a man who finds himself on an unforgettable journey after he begins to experience memories that are not his own. Teaming up with a group of mysterious warriors, Evan sets out to make sense of the madness and find out who’s behind it all.

Enola Holmes (2021)

Millie Bobby Brown’s 2021 Netflix action-adventure film, Enola Holmes, offers a new approach to the world of Sherlock Holmes (played by Henry Cavill in this case). The Stranger Things star’s portrayal of the younger sister of the world’s greatest detective is nothing short of magical, as are the multiple action set pieces peppered throughout the movie.

Red Notice (2021)

In 2021, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot teamed up for the thrilling Netflix original action flick, Red Notice. In a movie where you don’t know who or what to believe, three unlikely characters team up with and betray each other while attempting to get to the bottom of a centuries-old mystery and locate a priceless treasure.

Though a lot of these movies would have been great to experience on the biggest screen possible, it has been nice being able to watch them over and over again from the comfort of our own homes.

Chris Hemsworth has another hit film on his hands, as Extraction 2 is making a serious impression on Netflix subscription holders. The highly anticipated sequel has dominated within the streaming service’s ranks, with both films in the series even taking the top spots on the trending lists at one point. Because of that, Hemsworth has thanked the fans on multiple occasions. Considering the success the latest installment has seen, you’d think that the entertainment company would take it easy on promotion at this point. That doesn’t seem to be the case, however, as Hemsworth just showed how a helicopter and billboard are being used for advertising. And quite frankly, I’m in awe.

Studios sometimes tend to go all out while promoting a movie, especially when it’s a blockbuster. Netflix certainly spared no expense when it came to getting the word out on the latest film in its high-profile action series. Chris Hemsworth took to his Instagram story to share a clip of a Netflix helicopter, which has been tasked with carrying an Extraction 2 billboard to different locations. And here I thought that Warner Bros. Pictures’ campaign for the upcoming Barbie movie was impressive. It still is, of course, but what the streaming company has done in this case is nothing short of wild and kind of amazing. The ad has apparently made its way to a number of different places as well. One of the clips that the flick’s leading man shared showed it being carried over a beach-like area, which you can see for yourself: 

You really can’t help but appreciate such commitment to a promotional campaign. Such a marketing move is surely costly, though one would think that it would be effective. The sight of a massive billboard being suspended in the air by a helicopter is something that one surely won’t forget. Some may scoff at the idea of someone feeling compelled to watch a movie after seeing such a thing, but never underestimate the power of a strong marketing ploy.

One would think that Extraction 2’s success can also be attributed to the strong reviews the Netflix sequel has received from critics. CinemaBlend’s Corey Chichizola has even hailed it as being more thrilling than the original. Many have praised the action, including the now-iconic 21-minute “oner.” Much of the credit for the thrills should absolutely go to director Sam Hargrave and his collaborators. Of course, Chris Hemsworth deserves credit as well for really committing to the work. After all, his arm really was set on fire for that lengthy action sequence.

Though the second chapter in the story of Tyler Rake is still being promoted, it would seem that the series’ future has already been set. The Thor actor and Sam Hargrave were present at the annual Tudum event a few weeks ago, where they confirmed that a third Extraction film is on the way. Details on the project are scarce at the moment, as talks are still apparently underway. However, even now, it’s reasonable to assume that the cast and crew are looking to up the ante for the next movie. 

In the meantime though, you may want to keep a close eye on the continued marketing campaign for the series’ most recent entry. I’m not sure just how far that billboard is going to travel, but I’ll be looking up to the sky now and then on the off chance that I see Chris Hemsworth’s face floating above. (Actually, I’m going to run outside quickly, because I think I hear a chopper.)

With the Extraction movies, Chris Hemsworth has most certainly put his name on another successful film franchise aside from his Marvel career as Thor. The Netflix sequel Extraction 2, which soared to the top of the streaming service’s charts over the weekend, isn’t simply another great action movie; it brings to life a human character that Hemsworth himself can relate and aspire to, as he shared with us. 

While speaking to CinemaBlend’s Sean O’Connell about the new movie, Chris Hemsworth shared the heroic element he identifies the most when it comes to Tyler Rake. In his words: 

Hemsworth has a soft spot for children, just like his guy Tyler Rake in the Extraction movies, and that aspect of the character is something he hopes to continue to make a priority in his life. The Marvel actor is already a family man, having three kids of his own, 11-year-old India and nine-year-old twins, Sasha and Tristan, with his wife, Elsa Pataky. The parents moved their family away from Los Angeles to his native Australia in recent years to benefit their kids’ lives and expose them to the wonders of nature that just aren't as plentiful in the urban jungle of La La Land. 

Chris Hemsworth has spoken lately about how having children has changed his perspective on his career, sharing his decision to take a break from acting to “spend more time” with his three children. While Hemsworth is most certainly not a black-market operations mercenary like Tyler Rake, and thus can’t necessarily relate to that experience, he could hold on to the character’s tendency to protect children, as he has in both Extraction movies. 

Since Extraction 2 was released on Netflix on Friday, both the new release and the original 2020 movie earned top spots on the site’s trending list. Amidst the excitement, Hemsworth celebrated by thanking fans for helping make the movies No. 1 and No. 2. Over the weekend, Hemsworth traveled to Sao Paulo, Brazil with director Sam Hargrave for Netflix’s Tudum fan event, as well to pay fans a visit in person and share that himself and the filmmakers are “already talking about Extraction 3.” 

While Hemsworth may be taking a break from acting in the coming years, fans can also look forward to seeing him in the upcoming Mad Max spinoff Furiosa. This past weekend was pretty big for Chris Hemsworth, who marked the release of the highly anticipated sequel to 2020’s Extraction. The actor has been eager to gift fans with the action thriller and, by the look of it, plenty of people have been checking it out. It was probably a given that the new Netflix film would make its way to the top of the streamer’s movies trending list in the U.S. But if that weren’t enough, its predecessor simultaneously peaked at No. 2 over the past few days. With that, Hemsworth couldn’t help but celebrate the occasion and did so humorously. 

As of this writing, Extraction 2 still sits at No. 1 on the list, while the first film has dropped ever so slightly to the third spot. However, Chris Hemsworth managed to commemorate the period of time during which both productions occupied the top two spots on the list. The star posted about the sweet accomplishment on Instagram using a funny photo. In the pic, the actor makes a greatly enthused expression while holding up his phone to show off the ranking. Not many people can say that they have not one, but two movies trending high on the mega streamer. That feat is a true testament to the popularity of the action franchise and the loyalty of its fanbase. It also speaks volumes to the amount of work that the leading man, director Sam Hargrave and their collaborators put into the adrenaline-filled proceedings. Those who’ve seen the movies know that they’re extremely complex from a technical standpoint. So hearty congratulations are definitely in order!

The Thor actor went through a lot when it came to filming the critically praised Extraction 2. He performed a high number of stunts, with one even scaring him. Much of the acclaim has been aimed at the action sequence, particularly that 21-minute “oner” that sees the star’s arm catch fire. As strenuous as it may have been, you certainly can’t argue with the results. That’ll be far from the last time that the Blackhat alum engages in such feats, too. That’s because during Netflix’s Tudum this past weekend, the lead actor confirmed that the franchise will expand with a third movie. 

Fans are surely eager for that as we speak though, for right now, I’m sure Chris Hemsworth will simply enjoy the positive buzz that the latest installment is experiencing. I have to say, I’m curious as to how long both movies will remain in the Top 10. It’s far from certain, but their reign could last a while, thanks to positive word of mouth.

Netflix gifted action movie junkies with Extraction 2 – the highly anticipated sequel to Chris Hemsworth’s hit 2020 thriller. The Sam Hargrave-directed follow-up has made quite a splash, as it’s been praised by critics for its “instantly iconic” 21-minute “oner” and more. In addition to the positive buzz, the film is playing like gangbusters on the streaming platform. As of this writing, it’s the No. 1 streamed motion picture on the service, and its predecessor is right behind it at No. 2. So it should come as no surprise that Extraction 3 is in the works, and Hemsworth opened up about expanding the franchise.

This past weekend marked Tudum, which is the annual event at which Netflix highlights its newly released and upcoming productions. This year’s festivities were live from Brazil, and Chris Hemsworth and Sam Hargrave were both on tap to discuss their new film. The two received a lot of love during the YouTube live-streamed show, as the crowd was downright electric. However, attendees absolutely exploded when Hemsworth confirmed that the threequel is currently being discussed. The star dropped the major reveal while thanking the fans for their support: 

That’s a serious mic drop if I’ve ever heard one. The incredibly passionate response from the crowd alone was enough for one to see why the mega streamer would want to keep the adrenaline-infused franchise going. The 39-year-old Australian star and his director seemed more than excited over the prospect, too. On the surface, this definitely feels like a good move on the entertainment company’s part, especially if Hargrave and co. have more great story ideas. 

The first Extraction film also hit streaming milestones back in 2020, so a sequel seemed to be a certainty at that point. The 2023 new movie release still wasn’t confirmed right away, though, but writer and co-producer Joe Russo did tease that the mythos could expand in other ways. Russo wouldn’t commit to anything concrete at the time, though he did hint at the possibility of spinoffs starring some of the series’ characters. Considering the success this IP has experienced thus far, I think such an expansion could absolutely happen at some point.

But of course, at the core of this series is Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake, who seemingly returned from the dead for this latest installment. The film was a true labor of love from the cast and crew, and Hemsworth really put in the work. For this movie, the actor took part in a number of stunts, one of which scared him. And again, there’s that widely praised 21-minute continuous shot, during which Hemsworth’s arm was actually set on fire. He deserves a lot of credit for committing to the project and giving viewers plenty of impressive, cinematic thrills as a result.

CinemaBlend’s Corey Chichizola praised the movie, calling it even more thrilling than the original, and a number of other critics agree with that assessment. So Chris Hemsworth and Sam Hargrave are going to have to really go for it if they want to top themselves for Extraction 3. I’m confident, though, that they’ll be successful in expanding this franchise and am happy that we’re getting more of the badass that is Tyler Rake.

There are a lot of great options hitting the big screen at theaters this summer, including blockbusters like The Flash, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and more. But Netflix is here to prove that you don’t actually have to leave your house to experience that over-the-top action, as Chris Hemsworth is back as Tyler Rake for Extraction 2, the sequel to the streaming service’s 2020 hit. The reviews are in, and critics are here for the total chaos from the trailer that director Sam Hargrave has delivered — particularly with an astounding 21-minute action sequence — even if other aspects of the movie leave something to be desired.

Chris Hemsworth is no stranger to action, after portraying Thor in several Marvel Cinematic Universe offerings, but it sounds like this new Netflix movie really ramped up the fight sequences, with the actor saying he underwent “the most detailed and exhausting fight training” of his career. Let’s take a look at what the critics think, starting with CinemaBlend’s review of Extraction 2. Our own Corey Chichizola rates the film 3.5 stars out of 5, saying there’s more character development in the sequel, and the action is “absolutely bananas.” He continues: 

In a movie full of stunts — some of which actually scared its leading actor — the prison escape scene mentioned above seems to be the talker, as the lengthy melee was made to look like one continuous shot, and Chris Hemsworth was set on fire. GamesRadar’s Emily Murray said this scene and the rest of the action will have fans cheering from their sofas, even if the film is lacking in other areas. She rates the film 3 out of 5 stars, saying: 

Matt Donato of IGN gives Extraction 2 a “Good” 7 out of 10, if action for action’s sake is what you’re looking for. The sequel is at its best when Chris Hemsworth is taking out baddies with everything from flaming fists to gym equipment, but the critic says some motion-sickness-inducing camerawork distracts from the intricate cinematography. The review continues: 

Kate Erbland of IndieWire grades the movie a B, saying the action scenes in Extraction 2 are some of the best that Netflix has put out, and it’s a shame these sequences won’t be able to be enjoyed on a bigger screen. The critic continues: 

Frank Scheck of THR echoes that sentiment, saying that all of the attention being given to this scene (and the action as a whole) is well-warranted, and helps to distract from the less-than-thrilling dialogue and storyline. According to the review: 

This sounds like a must-see for action fans with a Netflix subscription when it becomes available Friday, June 16. While many of the critics find the script lacking in some way, the action seems to more than make up for that, and isn’t that why we’re throwing the popcorn in the microwave and hitting play on the Netflix app anyway?

“Who’d win in a fight?” That’s one of the most often asked questions in the world of action movies, and it’s led to many a spirited debate over the answer. For Extraction director Sam Hargrave, one such scenario has forced him to choose sides in a fictional fight between Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake and Keanu Reeves’ John Wick. While it may seem natural the man favors the hero he’s about to reintroduce to the world in Netflix's Extraction 2, his reasoning for why is pretty solid. 

While promoting his upcoming streaming sequel, Hargrave played favorites and chose the man who, according to Extraction 2’s latest trailer, fought his way back from death. Handing the victory to the Hemsworth hero, the director did give the man we last saw in John Wick: Chapter 4 the following advantage, telling Collider: 

It does seem that one of the most favorable factors working towards Keanu Reeves and his seemingly indestructible hitman is the literal plot armor he wears throughout the John Wick franchise. All he has to do is hide his face behind his jacket, and what could have been a fatal shot becomes nothing more than an inconvenience. The Netflix character on the other hand didn’t have such luck in the moments leading up to Extraction’s ending, which left the man we’d followed through one hell of an action rampage clinically dead.

While the director’s own preference does favor the action hero that became a 2020 sleeper hit for Netflix, Sam Hargrave isn’t just puffing up his proverbial chest. Defending his choice of awarding victory to Tyler Rake, he actually cites John Wick: Chapter 4’s ending as the main reason why he believes he’s in the right.

Ok Mr. Hargrave, you’ve got me there. Extraction 2 does prove that Chris Hemsworth’s ass kicker is, in fact, able to bring himself back from the dead. However, if that’s the argument that’s going to be used to determine victory between these two parties, then perhaps this face off isn’t over just yet. If Lionsgate’s preliminary plans for John Wick 5 are any indication, then Baba Yaga might return to the land of the living himself. In which case, one could technically call any rematch between John Wick and Tyler Rake the ultimate zombie fight; making this prospect even more exciting. 

As it stands, we’ll have to wait and see if another John Wick film actually gets into production. But we won’t have to wait too long for the sequel to return Tyler Rake to the world, as the film is set to open in limited theatrical release on June 9th. For those of you with a Netflix subscription, the release date for Extraction 2 is June 16th. 

While The Russo Brothers are synonymous with their outstanding work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they’ve been keeping busy with a number of projects since the release of Avengers: Endgame. One way is through the burgeoning streaming franchise Extraction starring Chris Hemsworth. While Extraction 2 will be here soon for those with a Netflix subscription, fans are already wondering about a threequel. But will Extraction 3 happen on Netflix? Here’s the last from the Brothers. 

Both Extraction movies were directed by Sam Hargrove, with Joe Russo writing the screenplay and both he and Anthony also producers. The trailer for Extraction 2 shows how the franchise’s action is going to be even crazier than its predecessor. When the Russo Brothers were asked by Collider about the possibility of another sequel, Joe Russo responded with:

Well, that certainly sounds hopeful. While Joe Russo doesn’t want to count his Extraction-related chickens before they hatch, it sounds like he can see a future where a threequel is ordered by Netflix. Luckily we won’t have to wait too long before the first sequel is available for streaming audiences.

Joe Russo’s comments help to peel back the curtain on what it’s like working on the Extraction franchise, and what’s going to come when the first sequel is finally upon us. It seems like Extraction 2 is going to have plenty of narrative threads to pull from for a possible third flick. Let’s just hope that the sequel is as wildly successful as its predecessor, which broke records at Netflix.

Much of the contents of Extraction 2 are being kept under wraps, but the upcoming streaming blockbuster will feature the return of Chris Hemsworth’s hero Tyler Rake, who was at the center of the hardest action scenes of his career. He’ll once again have another action packed mission to extract a target from a dangerous situation, which will bring him to new snowy settings and will include a wild prison break scene.

The ending of Extraction seemingly saw Tyler Rake sacrifice himself to save Ovi, being shot before apparently drowning. But the movie’s coda hinted that Chris Hemworth’s badass character had survived, and that was confirmed once the sequel was ordered. We’ll just have to wait and see how much those injuries affect him, and if we get to see any mention of how Ovi is doing nowadays.

Some of the best action movies are born from pure, utter bedlam. The crazier the action, the greater the adrenaline rush the audience is usually in for. One of the best action movies of recent times, Netflix’s Extraction, was built on that very principal, as Chris Hemsworth took it upon himself to take down countless enemies to save one young boy. The first few seconds of the trailer to the long awaited sequel Extraction 2 is also total chaos, and I’m all in on this round. 

Netflix released a new teaser to officially hype people up for the summer streaming release, and it’s as crazy as you’d expect. While learning some fun facts, like how Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake was clinically dead for a spell, we see our hero saving a young woman from a random jailing scenario. Director Sam Hargrave is back in play, as well as co-writer/former MCU overseer Joe Russo, and they look like they've landed another stunner.

Snow flies as fast as the punches, as Rake secures his quarry through some massively perilous circumstances. Also, Chris Hemsworth fights some people with one of his arms on fire, and takes down a helicopter with a gatling gun. Honestly, more weekday mornings need to start off with action like this.

This is pretty amazing for a man who, in Extraction’s ending, was pretty much considered dead. Questioning why Hemsworth’s Tyler would “come back” from death seems to be a question that Extraction 2 will be pondering throughout its eventual trail of bodies. Though one can already assume that anyone who crosses this Chris Hemsworth hero won’t be given that same choice. 

You can also see why Extraction 2 scored an “R” rating, even without any sort of gory details present in this new look. The sustained looks at combat in this Netflix sequel promise a seriously brutal follow-up, and Hemsworth’s stories of exhausting fight scenes only back those expectations in truth.

Let’s just hope that Tyler Rake doesn’t need to claw his way back to the living after this adventure, as that sort of thing isn’t exactly an everyday occurrence. Not to mention in this world, Chris Hemsworth doesn’t have a magical hammer or powers to rely on. So every move is counted more carefully in this harsh reality, no matter how many backup endings have been shot in the process. 

All I know is that if this level of chaos can be brought to Extraction 2, maybe we should be keeping Tyler Rake around for a while longer in a post-John Wick: Chapter 4 world. We'll see the results later this year, as the film is warming up its engines of ass kicking, with a streaming debut set for June 16. In spring 2020, when we were craving big action blockbuster movies while the COVID-19 pandemic kept movie theaters closed, Extraction came at the perfect time. When speaking about his experience filming Extraction 2 last year, Chris Hemsworth shared that the production “went for the moon” when it came to crafting the action scenes this time around. Hemsworth, who, of course, notably plays Thor in Marvel movies like Avengers: Endgame, also teased that the fight scenes involved are “the most detailed and exhausting fight training I've ever been a part of.”

Action movies have really been taken to another level in recent years, between the jaw-dropping stunts in the recent John Wick 4 movie and Tom Cruise’s crazy stunts for the Mission: Impossible and Top Gun sequel.  Hemsworth said that in a “very crowded world of action,” Extraction 2 wanted to push boundaries, and it sounds like there will be some big sequences this time around. 

Director Sam Hargrave, who directed both Extraction movies, comes from a stunt coordinator background, having worked on several Marvel movies prior to taking the helm on the Netflix movie. Hargrave also shared that they are going to “push even further” when it comes to the action sequences for Extraction 2 after they achieved a sequence in the original that looked like one continuous shot of fighting. 

The Extraction movies are based on Ande Parks, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo’s graphic novel called Ciudad. Following the Russo Brothers wrapping on their work with Marvel on major films like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, they are expanding their resume with ambitious action projects outside the comic book world, and Extraction was a major success for them in 2020. We can look forward to Extraction 2 hitting Netflix on June 16.

While Netflix and director Sam Hargrave haven’t treated the public to a trailer for Extraction 2, we were given a look at the cast and crew on set. The first movie’s cliffhanger ending revealed that Tyler Rake was indeed alive, and it should be fascinating to see how he lived through his apparent death in the finale. He didn’t reveal exactly what’s in store, but the new setting will no doubt help to bring something new to Tyler Rake’s fight sequences. 

Later in that same interview, Chris Hemsworth compared the work he’s done in the Extraction franchise from his various Marvel fights as Thor Odinson. While the MCU required visual effects, things feel much more visceral and palpable in the Netflix series. As he put it,

That type of camera movement and fast-paced choreography definitely paid off in the first Extraction movie, and is largely why it became so popular on Netflix. There will be high expectations for the sequel, but it certainly sounds like those involved in the movie will be swinging hard to exceed them. Now the question is: when is Extraction 2 finally being released to the public?

Extraction 2 doesn’t currently have a release date, but it’s expected to hit Netflix sometime in 2023. In the meantime, check out the 2023 movie release dates to plan your trips to the theater in the New Year. It also remains to be seen when Chris Hemsworth will return to the MCU, especially given the twist ending of Thor: Love and Thunder.

Over the years, if you’ve watched the Marvel movies in order, you’ve seen Chris Hemsworth maintain an impeccable physique as the God of Thunder. Clearly, the actor behind the self-proclaimed “strongest Avenger” is no stranger to intense workouts and training regimes. However, according to Ross Edgley, a sports scientist and ultra-marathon swimmer who worked with Hemsworth on Limitless, the Thor actor’s training for the Extraction sequel was “obscene.” 

In an interview with our sister site Tech Radar, Edgley talked about how Hemsworth has physically prepared for Extraction 2. The actor is just coming off a year where he released two films Thor: Love and Thunder and Spiderhead as well as the Disney+ docu-series Limitless. Edgley spoke about just how hard the Thor actor worked to prepare physically for these roles, saying: 

To any human, this seems like a lot, but when it’s the first person to swim the circumference of Great Britain explaining how wild Hemsworth's workouts are, you know it’s a physical feat. Edgley also explained, that he really admired the actor's work ethic and ability to get so much done in a day, saying: 

Don’t let Hemsworth’s jokes about working out less fool you, because this guy is doing anything but working out less. I could never imagine casually running a half marathon, no wonder Hemsworth literally has a god-like body. And not only is he working out, but he's also maintaining strict eating habits to make sure he maintains his physique. 

Along with the actor’s physical regime being seemingly more intense than ever (especially since he was working on so many projects), the Extraction sequel is also working hard to be bigger and better than its predecessor. In a behind-the-scenes look at the action film, the director made it clear that they are upping the action in a big way for the sequel. 

Between Hemsworth’s “obscene” workout regime, and the larger-than-life action, it sounds like Extraction 2 really is taking it to the next level, and will be an epic movie. However, we'll have to wait a bit to see it, action-packed sequel is on the 2023 movie schedule. In the meantime be sure to watch the OG Extraction with a Netflix subscription. In July 2022, Joe and Anthony Russo released one of flashiest and most expensive Netflix productions to date with the star-studded and white-knuckled action thriller The Gray Man. The movie, which stars Ryan Gosling as a CIA black ops assassin being chased by his own agency and the mustached madman played by Chris Evans, has consistently been one of the most popular 2022 Netflix movies since making its debut, and fans just can’t seem to get enough.

But before the eventual sequel and spinoff come out at some point in the future, we’re all going to need to find a way to spend the time before we pick back up with The Gray Man cast (or what’s left of it). One way we can go about this is to watch other titles that have at least one thing in common with one of the biggest new movies of the year. Here are a just few of the best options…

Drive (Amazon Rental)

An unnamed stunt driver (Ryan Gosling) who also works as a getaway driver in Los Angeles finds himself in a delicate situation after a job involving his neighbor’s ex-convict husband (Oscar Isaac) goes terribly wrong.

Similar to Ryan Gosling’s Court Gentry in The Gray Man, his ice-cold character in Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 neo-noir thriller, Drive, is the very definition of calm, cool, and collected even in the most dangerous of situations. But, also like his CIA mercenary on the run in his latest movie, his driver also has a soft spot for children in need.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Disney+)

Following the events of The Avengers, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) experiences an immense change when he realizes that not only is his long-lost friend, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), not actually dead but he’s a brainwashed super-soldier serving as a deadly assassin. 

One of the best Marvel movies to date, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a pivotal point in the MCU as “The First Avenger” learns who he can and can’t trust, especially within S.H.I.E.L.D. On top of the similarities in story, the 2014 movie also marked the first time Chris Evans worked with the Russo Brothers, though his character’s demeanor couldn’t be more different.

No Time To Die (Prime Video)

Years after leaving her majesty’s secret service, a.k.a. active duty, James Bond (Daniel Craig) is enjoying his retirement in peace and quiet. When Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) makes an unexpected visit to ask for help, though, 007 once again finds himself on a mission that could very well be his last.

The No Time to Die cast is full of tremendous actors from top to bottom, with one of the standouts being Ana de Armas’ CIA agent, Paloma, who provides one of the best sequences of the movie. If you liked de Armas in The Gray Man, then you’ll love her here, even if she doesn’t have as much screen time.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout (Paramount+)

In an attempt to stop the terrorist organization known as the Apostles, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and the rest of his IMF team join forces with CIA agent August Walker (Henry Cavill) as they search for three plutonium cores the group plans to use to destroy three holy cities.

You could technically watch any of the Mission: Impossible movies to get your spy thriller fix, but the sixth installment, 2018’s Fallout, is probably your best best. There are over-the-top action sequences and fights (including a ridiculous scene involving a plane), double-crossing, and a mustached and psychotic villain in what has to be one of the best action movies of all time.

Jack Ryan (Prime Video)

Jack Ryan (John Krasinski) is a former United States Marine working as an analyst with the CIA, far from the action. But when he connects some questionable bank transactions to a terrorist organization, he’s thrown into field duty and is never the same.

The Amazon original series, Jack Ryan, features a younger and less experienced CIA analyst and one of the better interpretations of Tom Clancy’s most famous character. With plenty of action, suspense, and fulfilling narratives throughout its first two seasons, there’s a lot to enjoy by The Gray Man fans.

Extraction (Netflix)

Hardened mercenary Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) is hired to find and rescue Ovi Mahajan Jr. (Rudraksh Jaiswal), the kidnapped son of a prolific Indian crime lord. What first appears to be a simple operation turns into something more complicated as the truth begins to unfold.

Written by The Gray Man co-director Joe Russo, the 2020 Netflix movie, Extraction is a fun, loud, and messy thriller, that finds that balance between explosive action, heart, and humor, creating an all-around fun and worthwhile experience.

The Raid 2 (HBO Max)

Immediately after he and an elite force take out a Jakarta crime boss, Rama (Iko Uwais) is sent on another mission. The only difference this time is he will be forced to go undercover to infiltrate a vast criminal operation from the inside.

Gareth Evans’ 2014 crime epic, The Raid 2, takes what its predecessor started and turns it up a few notches. Similar to The Gray Man, this instant classic is massive in scope and features some of the most hard-hitting and eye-catching fight sequences of the past decade. It’s just a bummer it looks like The Raid 3 isn’t going to happen.

Homeland (Showtime)

CIA operations officer Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) is tasked with investigating decorated United States Marine Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), who was captured and possibly turned against his country by a terrorist organization. Matters only get more complicated from there.

Like The Gray Man, the Showtime original series, Homeland, is full of espionage, back-channel deals, and untrustworthy characters. With eight seasons, it’s going to take a considerable amount of time to watch the award-winning series, but it’s perfect for fans of the genre.

John Wick (Peacock)

After a group of young criminals with connections to a Russian crime syndicate in New York City make the mistake of killing John Wick’s (Keanu Reeves) puppy, which was a gift from his dead wife, and steal his car, the legendary assassin comes out of retirement and turns the criminal underworld on its head.

All of the John Wick movies should be watched, especially with the fourth installment on the way, but this is the best place to start, obviously. If you liked the stylish fights and action sequences of The Gray Man, wait until you see what Mr. Wick can do behind a gun and any other weapon.

Enemy Of The State (Amazon Rental)

Washington, D.C. Attorney Robert Dean (Will Smith) finds himself the most-wanted man by the NSA after an old college buddy hands him a disc containing video of the agency’s chief, Thomas Reynolds (Jon Voight), murdering a member of congress.

Tony Scott’s Enemy of the State is one of the movies on this list with the most in common with The Gray Man considering they both center on characters who find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time and become part of an agency’s attempt to sweep the mess under the rug.

The Night Manager (Prime Video)

Former British soldier and current Cairo luxury hotel night manager Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) is tasked with bringing down one of the world’s premier arms dealers, Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie), kicking off an epic and deadly turn of events.

Although it isn’t as sensational or over-the-top as The Gray Man, the 2016 limited series, The Night Manager, packs quite a punch. If you are fascinated by seedy government agencies, loud personalities, and great action, then look no further.

The King’s Man (Hulu / HBO Max)

In an effort to prevent a mysterious group of terrorists from thrusting the world into the most devastating war of all time, Orlando Oxford (Ralph Fiennes) puts together a team of spies to prevent the unthinkable from happening.

Matthew Vaughn’s 2021 spy action film, The King’s Man, serves up a great prequel to his Kingsman franchise as well as being a tremendous World War I thriller with its fair share of historical figures. If stylized and unique fight scenes are your thing, this is a great movie to check out.

Each of these titles have a least one thing in common with The Gray Man, but these aren’t the only movies and shows that should be watched by fans of the Russo brothers’ latest effort. It also wouldn’t hurt to check out classics like Clear and Present Danger, Three Days of the Condor, or Heat for one reason or another.

The streaming wars have been ongoing for years, with services like Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix producing a ton of original movie content. The latter streamer has been leading the charge, and has kickstarted a few original franchises for subscribers. Case in point: 2020’s Extraction, which featured truy insane action sequences. And writer/producer Joe Russo is teasing how Extraction 2 will be different from Chris Hemsworth’s first movie.

The Russo Brothers collectively wrote and produced the first Extraction movie, which reunited them with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame actor Chris Hemsworth. A sequel was quickly ordered by Netflix, after it broke streaming records for the service. Extraction 2 is already in the can, and screenwriter Joe Russo recently spoke to how it’ll be unique from its predecessor, saying:

Well, color me intrigued. It looks like Extraction 2 will paint lots of different colors than the first movie, while also continuing the action-packed story of Chris Hemsworth’s protagonist Tyler Rake. And it seems like the change in physical setting is going to help to make the sophomore installment of the burgeoning franchise unique from the first Netflix flick.

Aside from taking place in a different physical location, Joe Russo also vaguely teased how Extraction 2 will have a new tone when compared to the original. It should be interesting to see how/why this change occurs. But since audiences already know the game and players including Chris Hemsworth’s hero, Joe Russo and director Sam Hargrave should be able to make bold narrative choices without worrying about whether the audience is going to be invested or not.

Not much is known about the mysterious contents of Extraction 2, but Netflix offered fans a crumb via the first thrilling teaser which you can see above. The debut footage confirmed that Chris Hemsworth’s character Tyler Rake did indeed survive the events of the first movie, despite being presumed dead following the final conflict. This was hinted at in the final moments of the original action flick, when we seemingly saw him looking after Ovi from afar. We’ll have to see if that young character ends up factoring into the action of the sequel.

Extraction 2 currently doesn’t have a release date, but the movie wrapped principal photography. Chris Hemsworth can be seen in Thor: Love and Thunder on July 8th. In the meantime, check out the 2022 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience.

John Wick (2014)

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

George Miller’s Mad Max franchise seemed like it was dead and gone before the series’ fourth installment, Mad Max: Fury Road, completely destroyed the competition at the box office in the summer of 2015. Starring Tom Hardy as the titular hero and Charlize Theron as the fearless Imperator Furiosa, this tour de force takes audiences on a journey through the heart of the wasteland in search of a better and less-violent life.

Hard Boiled (1992)

John Woo’s 1992 Hong Kong action epic Hard Boiled centers on Tequila Yuen (Chow Yun-fat), a renegade cop who goes to extraordinary lengths in order to bring down the gang of gun smugglers who violently murdered his partner. With excessive violence, a gripping story, and that classic John Woo flash, there are plenty of reasons Hard Boiled is considered one of the best of all time.

Con Air (1997)

The late 1990s brought us an action movie in which classically trained actor John Malkovich got the opportunity to play the vicious serial killer in Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom, in Simon West’s movie about a group of prisoners who take over a prison transport plane. Even though Con Air is a very silly movie with several questionable moments, it remains one of the best thanks to Nicolas Cage and his portrayal of Cameron Poe, a convict who just wants to get home to meet his daughter.

The Raid (2012)

There are few movies that compare to The Raid, which is also known by the title The Raid: Redemption. Gareth Evans’ 2012 bone-shattering action flick centering on an elite police force working their way to the top of an apartment tower in order to apprehend a notorious crime lord. With floor after floor of armed guards and deadly fighters, this tower of terror never lets off the gas the entire runtime.

Escape From New York (1981)

John Carpenter’s 1981 dystopian thriller Escape From New York is not only one of the best Kurt Russell Movies but it’s also one of the best action movies of all time. When Snake Plissken (Russell) is sent into a heavy fortified New York City (which has been transformed into a prison colony) to save the President of the United States, he has to survive the mean streets of the Big Apple if he wants to rescue to the Commander in Chief and get back in time to avoid a premature death.

The Rock (1996)

Bad Boys II (2003)

Although some would argue Bad Boys II isn’t better than the original, the 2003 buddy cop movie with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence returning as Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett, respectively, is still a hell of a lot of fun. This time, however, the Miami detectives find themselves in over their head when their investigation into the world of the drug ecstasy comes a little too close to home.

Speed (1994)

Keanu Reeves was already a big name in the action world by the time he was cast as Jack Traven in Jan de Bont’s 1994 action thriller Speed, but the movie, and its logic-defying bus jump, helped take him to the next level. Everything from the concept (the bus will explode if its speed drops below 50 mph) and the chemistry shared by Reeves and Sandra Bullock works far better than it should.

Taken (2008)

Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

The Mummy (1999)

Say what you will about The Mummy, but the 1999 action comedy starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz is a ton of fun. With elements of horror, suspense, action, romance, and comedy, the story follows a group of explorers who inadvertently awaken a vengeful and heartbroken mummy in ancient Egypt. Mr. Fraser wants another entry in the franchise, and we can't help but agree.

Point Break (1991)

Extraction (2020)

Extraction follows a mercenary (Chris Hemsworth) who is hired to track down the kidnapped son of an international crime lord. This seems like a difficult task in itself, but things quickly get out of hand, resulting in even more danger and perilous situations in one of the best Netflix movies of 2020.

Aliens (1986)

Despite the first movie in the Alien franchise being a moody and terrifying sci-fi horror story, its 1986 sequel, Aliens, took a completely different path and it paid off handsomely. James Cameron’s iconic action flick, which saw the return of Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley, as well as the debut of a few of cinema’s most quotable soldiers, remains one of the most fun and unique sequels while also keeping some of the horror elements of its predecessor.

Atomic Blonde (2017)

That case was made even stronger in 2017 with the arrival of Atomic Blonde, a fun and brutal action thriller centering on an elite spy (Theron) who isn’t afraid to put her life in danger or get her hands a little dirty in order to pull off a job. This eye-catching and action-packed lesson in brutality is a must-watch.

Actor Chris Hemsworth has had a wildly successful career, partly due to his leading role in the Thor movies. But he’s got another action-packed franchise to lead thanks to Netflix’s Extraction. Fans can’t wait for the upcoming sequel, especially since the first one broke records at the streamer. Hemsworth recently shared a video from Extraction 2’s set, and the sequel looks totally wild.

The first Extraction movie became one of Netflix’s best movies when it arrived in 2020, and a sequel was quickly greenlit. The first movie was full of dizzying action and stunt sequences for Chris Hemsworth and the cast, and it seems like things might be even more crazy the second time around. Can Extraction 2 just come out already? Because on top of the crazy gun and fist fights that Chris Hemsworth will be getting into, it looks like we’ll be treated to a full on prison riot. And that includes at least one person being set on fire in the midst of the sequence.

Throughout the clip, the Thor actor jokes about it being a quiet, calm day on the set of Extraction 2. And during his comments, screaming and flaming fight choreography is happening behind him. As always, Hemsworth’s sparkling personality shines through.

Exactly what’s coming in Extraction 2 remains a mystery, but it looks like it’s greatly going to greatly expand the story that began with Sam Hargrave’s 2020 original. We’ll be treated to new locations, and it certainly seems like the action is being taken to the next level. And presumably we should find out exactly how Chris Hemsworth’s protagonist Tyler Rake survived the events of the last movie, and what his recovery was like.

The first Extraction focused on just a few crazy days for Tyler Rake, as he attempted to safely evacuate Obi, the son of an incarcerated Indian drug lord. The two developed a sweet relationship throughout their adventure, and it seemed like Chris Hemsworth’s hulking mercenary sacrificed himself in the final gunfight. But the epilogue of the film saw Obi being watched over by a figure that seemingly resembled Rake. Netflix’s order of a sequel confirmed that he would indeed be back.

Chris Hemsworth is one of the busiest stars in Hollywood, as it seems the actor is always working. However, many probably know that he’s also a devoted husband and father, who enjoys spending time with his family. Sometimes he and his brood are able to take personal (and beautiful) trips but, on other occasions, his work and personal pleasure mix. This was recently the case for Hemsworth, as his son joined him for some downtime on the set of Extraction 2. The actor captured the moment with a sweet photo, which really ups the ante when it comes to Take Your Child to Work Day. 

Working on a movie can be strenuous, especially when the project is a blockbuster film like Extraction 2. So the cast and crew surely relish the quiet moments they’re able to get when the cameras aren’t rolling. This thinking lines up with Chris Hemsworth’s sentiments in his recent Instagram post. In it, he captured one of “the few quiet moments” he’s had during the shoot, and the black and white photo of him and his son looking out at the beautiful scenery is definitely serene. The Thor star has posted some sweet snapshots and videos with his kids before, like the sweet and cool bow and arrow clip. But the simplicity and peaceful nature of this photo can be appreciated by just about anyone, especially parents who relish their time with their children. And while it’s surely enjoyable for the actor, one would imagine that his son is also loving the fact that he can spend time with his papa while he’s on the job. 

This isn’t the first time that the Australian performer has tried to get some downtime while working on the movie. He previously shared a funny video in which attempted to relax and enjoy the natural wonders of nature. Unfortunately, for him, his zen moment was interrupted by a nearby dump truck. The actor didn’t seem to mind it too much but, lately, breaks have been invaluable for him, given his work schedule.

So far, Extraction 2 is shaping up to be one of the most strenuous jobs Chris Hemsworh has ever had. The Rush actor has been updating fans out on his training for the highly anticipated Netflix sequel since this past fall. Hemsworth was engaging in some truly intense (and badass) routines ahead of reprising his role as Tyler Rake and, by the time shooting was six weeks out, his arms were absolutely swole. Based on what he’s shown, his training here has been much different from how he’s previously prepared to play the God of Thunder. 

Production on the follow-up had begun by November, and director Sam Hargrave celebrated the occasion with a cool video on social media. Shortly after, his lead star posted his own video, which also included Hargrave. Like the initial clip, the footage showed of their snowy surroundings, which is a sharp departure from the hot terrain present in the original 2020 film. 

There’s still work that needs to be done on the upcoming action-thriller, but it’s nice to see that Chris Hemsworth is taking time to chill with at least one of his kids while in the meantime. Here’s to a safe film shoot and more sweet moments between father and son!

Netflix has been producing a dizzying amount of original content for years now. But a select number of movie titles have risen as the most successful/popular for the streaming service. Case in point: The Russo Brothers' Extraction starring Chris Hemsworth, which was quickly green lit for a sequel. The first Extraction 2 image features Hemsworth's return as Tyler Rake, and a way different setting.

Extraction ended with Chris Hemsworth's badass character seemingly perishing in order to save the young Ovi (Rudhraksh Jaiswal). But the final moments of the coda hinted that he might still be alive, and that's been confirmed in the first snowy image from the sequel. Check it out below,

Well, it looks like Extraction 2 is going to take the story far away from Bangladesh. Here we see Tyler Rake in a far more chilly setting, requiring him to bundle up in order to survive the elements. Although I wouldn't be surprised if a shirtless scene still occurs throughout the movie's runtime. Now the question is: exactly where is the story going for the burgeoning action franchise?

Looks like Tyler Rake has gotten a few licks ahead of this image, as there are some cuts and wounds on Chris Hemsworth's face. Although considering the bodycount that he raked up in the first movie, smart money says the other guys look far worse. 

Concrete information about Extraction 2's contents are a complete mystery at this point, so this first still from the Netflix sequel is sure to turn a few heads. It looks like the story is going take place in very different settings, which should open new narrative doors for director Sam Hargrave's upcoming movie. We'll just have to wait and see if other familiar faces like Ovi or Golshifteh Farahani's Nik Khan factor into the story.

Considering how massively popular the first Extraction movie was, it should be interesting to see how The Russo Brothers grow the story into a full-blown franchise. Netflix would presumably be more generous with a budget, which should result in some absolutely dizzying action sequences. Hopefully with this first still online, some footage will be released to the public sooner rather than later.

Chris Hemsworth is no stranger to action sequences, given his continued tenure as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But action played out quite differently in Extraction, mostly because Tyler Rake doesn't have any superpowers to hide behind. Hemsworth and the stunt team worked tirelessly on the first movie, rehearsing one shoot-out while simultaneously filming another. We'll just have to see if the stakes get even higher in the mysterious sequel.

It’s been over a year and a half since the Christ Hemsworth-led action movie Extraction premiered on Netflix with a bang, and it didn’t take long for word to come in that a sequel was in the works. While there have been some delays getting Extraction 2 off the ground, it’s finally begun filming. Director Sam Hargrave revealed as much when he shared a quick peek at the start of production.

Rather than the action being set in Dhaka, Bangladesh again like in the first movie, Extraction 2 is moving to a colder climate, as you’ll see in the below Instagram post Sam Hargrave shared to commentate finishing Day 1 of principal photography:

Originally the plan was for Extraction 2 to film in Australia, to the point that in late August, the crew was in preparation mode in New South Wales. However, due to COVID-19 concerns, it was decided to pack up shop and move to Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. What will Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake be doing there? That’s hard to say for now, but let’s hope he has enough layers on while gunning down bad guys in the snow. And while shooting in that environment doesn’t look comfortable by any means, Sam Hargrave sounds satisfied by how the footage they shot turned out. Filming in Prague is expected to wrap up next March.

The Extraction 2 trailer released in September confirmed that Chris Hemsworth will reprise Tyler Rake after Extraction ended on an ambiguous note for the character. Other than that, no plot details have been divulged to the public. Given that 99 million households reportedly watched the first movie in its first four weeks of availability, it’s hardly surprising that Netflix decided to greenlight a sequel. Joe Russo also returned to pen the script and produce alongside his brother, Anthony Russo.

In contrast to when he plays Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (we’ll see the God of Thunder next in Thor: Love and Thunder), Chris Hemsworth hasn’t been eating as much protein in preparation for his return to Tyler Rake, with his trainer, Luke Zocchi, saying that the actor is “eating 3-4 times a day and roughly eating 2,500 [calories].” Zocchi also noted that Hemsworth is no longer doing blood flow training due to the physical toll it takes. Extraction 2 is one of several Netflix movies that Hemsworth has coming up, the others being Escape from Spiderhead and the Hulk Hogan biopic.

He’s currently training and eating for the Extraction sequel, although it looks way different from how he transforms into the God of Thunder.

In all of his movie roles, Chris Hemsworth is known for bringing a hulking physicality. His gig as Tyler Rake in Extraction is certainly no exception, but it’s a different type of training when compared to Thor in the MCU. His trainer Luke Zocchi recently addressed the pivot in the actor’s food consumption, saying:

That’s a pretty massive difference in calories. Because while Chris Hemsworth is trying to look as massive and godly as possible for Thor: Love and Thunder, he’s occupying a much more realistic world for Extraction 2. Regardless, I feel bad for whatever bad guys he’s going to be going against in the pair of highly anticipated sequels.

Luke Zocchi’s comments to Insider show how methodically Chris Hemsworth and his team approach fitness for each movie role. His diet for Extraction is far more realistic and sustainable than the calorie-heavy approach taken for the MCU. And fans are no doubt hoping to see some gratuitous shirtless scenes for both Thor and Tyler Rake. After all, how are we supposed to appreciate the work he put on his physique without being able to compare and contrast?

While Thor is going to be super bulky in Love and Thunder, it seems that Chris Hemsworth will be more toned by comparison in Extraction’s sequel. But although he won’t have to consume as many calories for the Netflix flick, the Ghostbusters actor will still have to work extremely hard when returning to the role of Tyler Rake. The first movie had an insane amount of action sequences, with Hemsworth rehearsing upcoming fights while filming others.

There are plenty of actors who bulk up when playing superheroes, so Chris Hemsworth is hardly the only MCU hero going through this process. Stars like Paul Rudd and Chris Pratt made huge changes to their bodies, while Brie Larson has been training hard for months before returning to her role as Captain Marvel. Although it’s definitely clear that Hemsworth is super passionate and specific about his ongoing fitness journey.

Anticipation is high for Extraction 2, as the first movie remains Netflix’s most popular title of all time. While Chris Hemsworth’s character seemingly perished in the epic last battle, the final moments of the movie seem to hint that he’s still looking over Rudhraksh Jaiswal ‘s Ovi.

At this point, we’re pretty used to people in Hollywood doing crazy things to their bodies in order to fit the mold for a role. While we haven’t reached the Hunger Games-level body modifications of The Capitol quite yet, there are still some scary techniques that stars use to transform their bodies. Earlier this year, Marvel alum Chris Hemsworth revealed the blood restriction technique he used to get Thor’s arms looking like “the legs of a racehorse." But apparently, he's no longer practicing the wild technique, as he prepares for filming on Extraction 2 -- and the reason for that sounds “quite painful.”

While he was not the trainer featured in the actor's original blood restriction technique workout video, one of the star's trainers, Luke Zocchi, is well aware of the method. Zocchi recently told Insider that the Avengers: Endgame star is no longer using the method due to the physical toll it takes:

Chris Hemsworth certainly looked like he was in a world of hurt in his training video where he employed the technique, and I’m not surprised that he decided to retire the process. People who participate in this training use bands around their biceps to cut off blood flow while they lift weights and work on their arm muscles. The combination of restricted blood flow and weight lifting results in an increase in lactic acid production, which stretches the muscle and makes it appear bigger.

Insider also notes that there could be other risks associated with the training regiment. Personal trainer Harry Smith previously spoke to the online news outlet about the technique and had this to say about it:

It certainly doesn't sound like the practice is a very natural one, or one that is without its downsides. Even though Chris Hemsworth seems to be stepping away from the drastic blood flow training, he doesn't appear to be easing up on his training load. The star seems to be giving it his all for Extraction 2, and he is looking as swole as ever. So it doesn’t appear that he's missing much after moving on from the blood restricting bands.

The highly anticipated sequel is expected to start filming later this month, and it is due to drop on sometime next year. You can also catch Chris Hemsworth and his massive arms in Thor: Love and Thunder next summer, as it releases to theaters on July 8th. If there’s one thing Chris Hemsworth is known for, it’s keeping his body in tip-top shape. The Australian actor has gone to great lengths to maintain his impressive physique, even looking to some new (and intense) workouts to keep himself sharp. It’s a lot of work, but it’s definitely hard to argue with the results. Right now, Hemsworth is only six weeks away from shooting the highly anticipated sequel to Netflix’s Extraction and, as you’d expect, he’s putting in serious training. But honestly, I’m simply struck by just how swole his arms are!

The Thor actor has frequently shared photos of his workout routines, especially when prepping for a new project. The upcoming Netflix sequel will definitely require a major level of physicality on his part, but it seems the star has gone above and beyond in that regard. He recently took to Instagram to share a photo of himself in the middle of a workout, and his massive arms were on full display. Check them out for yourself and be amazed: 

I don’t know about any of you, but I’m in sheer awe of the work Chris Hemsworth has put in. Sure, he’s getting paid very well to keep himself in shape but, again, there are very few stars that put in this much work in the gym. At this point, it’s safe to say that he’s reached Dwayne Johnson’s level of fitness commitment -- and may even be exceeding it in some ways. All in all, you really have to give the man his props.

While this recent photo looks intense enough, it’s only a small part of the work the 38-year-old star has done. He previously shared a workout video in September, which showed off a variation of routines he’s used to prep for Extraction 2. The clip included a three-minute boxing round, 50 squats, 25 push-ups and more. I’m getting exhausted just thinking about it.

Filming for the Netflix sequel was originally scheduled to kick off last month in Sydney, Australia. Production plans were forced to change, however, due to COVID-19-related lockdown concerns in the country. As a result, filming is now set to begin in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. The delay is sure to be somewhat of a disappointment for the cast and crew but, at the very least, it would seem that the project’s lead is using his time wisely. 

Plot details on Extraction 2 are scarce at the moment, though a teaser was recently dropped in order to whet fans’ appetites. While there wasn’t much in the way of new footage, the clip did confirm what many suspected following the original film. Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake is indeed alive and will fight another day. And thank goodness for that, because it would’ve been bittersweet to see the franchise move on without its lovable leading man. 

Chris Hemsworth may be in great shape now, but it’s fair to assume he’s going to continue working out before the cameras start rolling. His firm dedication should yield great results when he finally reprises his role. The original film was intense, and it’s likely the sequel will only amp things up, which means Hemsworth is going to need to bring his A-game.

In 2019, Jake Gyllenhaal played Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home., who became one of the best MCU villains in recent years. Thanks to the character’s evil plot, a multiverse of madness may even open up in the next Spidey installment. Looking ahead, Gyllenhaal has just signed on to be part of another comic book movie, this time based on Rob Liefeld’s John Prophet, who has graced issues of Image Comics since the early ‘90s, but has yet to be seen in a movie. 

Jake Gyllenhaal will play John Prophet in an upcoming movie titled Prophet with Extraction director Sam Hargrave helming, per The Hollywood Reporter. Rob Liefeld, who is best known for co-creating Marvel's Deadpool, is also the comic book author behind Prophet, a man who volunteers for a German experiment near the end of World War II to feed his family, and in turn obtains superhuman strength. 

John Prophet sounds like a cross between Wolverine and Captain America considering he wakes up decades in the future, thanks to his superhuman powers, to find that the world has moved on past World War II, his daughter has grown up and KGB agents are after him to create super soldiers from his blood. This feels like a major role for Jake Gyllenhaal that will also introduce an underrated comic book character to the forefront. 

Prophet’s director Sam Hargrave was memorably a longtime stunt coordinator for the MCU films including Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Last year, Hargrave debuted as an action film director for Netflix’s Extraction, which starred Chris Hemsworth and was produced by the Russo Brothers. The movie became one of the most viewed Netflix original films ever, and Hargrave is currently getting ready to film the sequel. 

Prophet's script is being written by Marc Guggenheim, who has found success on The CW developing DC shows such as Arrow, Supergirl and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Guggenheim is also set to write and produce the upcoming HBO Max Green Lantern series starring Finn Wittrock. We don’t expect Prophet to get rolling for some time considering Hargrave is headed to film Extraction 2, but it looks like a solid creative team is coming together for the movie. 

Jake Gyllenhaal recently put out his Netflix film The Guilty, which had the actor playing a 9-1-1 dispatcher in a movie that was made during the pandemic under difficult restrictions. Next, he’ll star in Michael Bay’s Ambulance, in an action film also starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II about a heist that goes totally wrong. The movie is coming out February 18, 2022. Unless you’re someone who enjoys watching stunts so much that you regularly seek out extra footage and information on how stunt performers prepare for and then do such frequently dangerous work, you probably don’t see much of the behind-the-scenes effort that goes into filming various fights, falls, and death-defying flips. A lot goes into making all of that look realistic while keeping people safe, and with Sam Hargrave’s feature directorial debut having now won three Taurus World Stunt Awards, star Chris Hemsworth has taken to Instagram to congratulate the team who made it all possible. WOW. Right? I mean, just that first view of two very real people falling off a balcony onto an awning and bouncing off a truck, looking quite a bit like life-sized rag dolls, is enough to make anyone wonder how it’s possible to do such a thing and not get hurt. No wonder there were people other than Hemsworth on the other side of the camera filming the action on their phones.

We knew that he’d performed many of his own stunts, and this video shows off some of that intense work, including what looks to be him practicing his fall off of the bridge that wrapped the action for his character, Tyler Rake. 

The Thor actor talked about filming these Extraction action scenes shortly after the movie debuted and became a near instant hit, and discussed how the three month shoot included weeks of rehearsals beforehand. During filming, they also rehearsed the next day’s fight scenes, even if they’d already spent that day filming another of the movie’s hard-charging action sequences. Hemsworth noted that the entire production was “basically kind of running and sprinting and fighting the whole time,” but did also say he found the experience “exhausting but rewarding,” because of the results they were able to achieve. And, clearly, all of the hard work paid off.

Not only did the film just win Best Fight, Hardest Hit, and Best Stunt Coordination, but Netflix reported just how well the movie did with fans, who watched to the tune of 99 million households in the first four weeks of its release. This means that a sequel was given the go-ahead pretty quickly, and, luckily, from what Hemsworth says, they expect to begin filming on Extraction 2 soon, and with much bigger stunt plans than in the first film.

Right now, all we really know about Extraction 2 is that Hargrave will return to direct and Chris Hemsworth will be back as Tyler (hopefully after the wounded mercenary has some time to recover), but we can’t wait to see where the action will take us the second time around.

In early 2020, when we were strapped for big action movies and in lockdown, Extraction was the movie that picked us back up. The Russo Brothers film starring Chris Hemsworth introduced audiences to Tyler Rake, a black market mercenary with a mission to remove a boy from being held hostage by a Bangladesh drug lord. By the end of Extraction however, the movie memorably left us wondering, did Hemsworth’s character die? We finally have an answer.

During Netflix’s TUDUM global fan event, the streaming service showed a first look at Extraction 2 and it picks up right where the first movie left off. At the end of Extraction, Chris Hemsworth’s character fell off a bridge after being shot at. The movie ended with him in the ocean, perhaps falling to his demise. But as this teaser shows, his eyes will open and it looks like he will somehow live to see another day. Rake will live after all!

The Extraction trailer opens with the ending of the movie, once again reliving that fateful moment where Tyler looked like he had met his end. However, now we get to see what happens just moments after his plunge. His eyes flutter open and he is heard taking a breath at the surface. The teaser ends with the hashtag #RakeLives to keep fans warm until Extraction 2 makes its way to Netflix.

Since Extraction was released, it has reportedly become the most watched Netflix film of all time, breaking major records for the studio’s streaming numbers. It had 99 million views clocked as of Netflix’s most recent earnings report, beating out Bird Box, Spencer Confidential, 6 Underground and Murder Mystery among the platform’s top five ever. A sequel was green lit quickly after its release, but the question has always remained: how will the story continue?

Earlier this month, Chris Hemsworth shared a video of himself “gearing up” to make the Extraction sequel. The Thor actor is in incredible shape and will soon start shooting the film in Prague, after the production had initially been set to be made in his home country of Australia. The teaser trailer only says that Extraction 2 is “coming soon” and in this case, that’s not likely until sometime in 2022 at the earliest.

The second Extraction movie is set to be once again directed by Sam Hargrave, who made his feature film debut with the Netflix film. Hargrave was previously on the stunt side of things, even serving as Chris Evans’ stunt double for Captain America in a number of movies. The script was written by Joe Russo, based on his graphic novel with brother Anthony, Ciudad. Although it may be some time until we actually find out how Tyler Rake will continue after coming out alive, this trailer is a great first look at Extraction 2.

Thor: Love and Thunder actually served as a significant physical challenge for him. While the actor has always been one to stay in shape, he got absolutely ripped for the upcoming Marvel movie and has since shared a few training videos. The latest of these clips involved a method known as occlusion training, in which blood flow and oxygen are restricted from certain muscles, causing them to work harder in a shorter period of time. It’s intense, but it results in those Thor arms fans have come to know.

Thor isn’t the only movie that the star has been gearing up for, though. He’s also been prepping for his turn as Hulk Hogan in the upcoming biopic. In doing so, he’s arguably gotten even bigger than he would to play the God of Thunder. Even Hogan himself took notice of his preparation and had to give him props.

When it comes to Extraction 2, production was set to being in Sydney, Australia this month. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the movie was forced to move to the Czech Republic.

Extraction was a massive success for Netflix when it dropped last year, so you can bet plenty are waiting for the chance to see Chris Hemsworth reprise his role as Tyler Rake once more. And based on these training videos he’s sharing, he’s going to give the production everything he’s got.

At this point, Idris Elba is one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood, as the actor has managed to land a variety of diverse roles over the years. As a result he’s become many things to audiences, including an action star. Films like Pacific Rim and Hobbs and Shaw have helped make him a mainstay in the realm of blockbuster films, and his role in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad should only bolster his status. But now, Elba is teaming up with Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction director for a brand new thriller, and it sounds wild.

Idris Elba is joining forces with Extraction’s Sam Hargrave Stay Frosty, a script that was purchased by Warner Bros. in a spec auction. Elba and Hargrave will also serve as producers alongside Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg. According to Deadline, the studio paid north of $1 million for the screenplay, which comes from Tyler Marceca. Admittedly, that does sound like a hefty price to pay for a script, but you haven’t heard the premise yet.

Stay Frosty takes place during the holiday season and will see Idris Elba play a man who miraculously survives a bullet to the head. After this, the man sets out to find the assassin that’s gunning for him while trying to make it home in time for Christmas. The trade describes the main character as a John Wick-type, and the film is intended to be a throwback to classic action thrillers like Lethal Weapon and Die Hard.

Needless to say, this sounds like a perfect action vehicle for Idris Elba, as the actor possesses the necessary grit to play a John Wick-esque character. Sam Hargrave also managed to leave quite an impression through Extraction, which was his directorial debut. Hargrave’s background as a stunt coordinator is one of the things that helped him land some of the insane sequences in the Netflix film. The result was another nice notch in Chris Hemsworth’s action movie belt, and the filmmaker can certainly do the same for Elba.

Ahead of Stay Frosty, Idris Elba still has a number of other films in production that are sure to pique fans’ interest. One of these films is Three Thousand Years of Longing, the long-delayed fantasy, romance film from George Miller. At present, Elba is shooting the western drama The Harder They Fall, which places him with big names like Jonathan Majors and Regina King.

Of course, there could also be more major blockbusters in Idris’ Elba’s future. If many 007 fans get their way, they could one day see him step into the shoes of James Bond. Elba has been linked to the role for years now and, based on recent comments he’s made, it sounds like the rumors are only intensifying.

It’s still early days for Stay Frosty, but the film’s crazy premise should be enough to get moviegoers pumped. It’ll be exciting to see who ends up joining Idris Elba in the chilly, yuletide flick!

Netflix is a monster of a studio and streamer, but even the hugely popular platform has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. This has been made apparent by various popular shows, such as GLOW, The Society and I Am Not Okay With This, being axed, with Netflix citing the current climate as to why their fates were cut short. Even the sequel to Extraction, the streaming service’s (self-reported) most watched Netflix original movie to date, has been prone to a setback due to the present situation, but nonetheless, Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake will return for an action-packed follow-up.

Following the first film’s huge success, and in the early days of the pandemic, Extraction 2 was given the green light by Netflix, with the Russo Brothers heading back behind the scenes and Sam Hargrave expected to helm the sequel starring the Thor actor. Nearly a year after the announcement, Hargrave has offered an optimistic update about the project. When asked if the film was still on schedule to shoot in 2021, here’s what he said:

Per Sam Hargrave’s words to Collider, it sounds like the next Extraction movie is moving ahead on schedule, but COVID-19 could stall it further if things don’t calm down by the expected fall shoot date. We don’t have much to go on in terms of what is next for Tyler Rake and the overarching story, but we can definitely expect more high-octane action sequences. As Hargrave teased:

One of Extraction's major draws and accomplishments was an ambitious twelve minute continuous one-shot involving a car chase, knife and gun fight. Since Sam Hargrave comes from a stunt coordinator background (largely in Marvel films like Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame), the action flick was the perfect opportunity for him to flex those muscles on a huge scale.

The Russos are also working on an Extraction spinoff film that might build up the other characters in the film, including David Harbour’s Gaspar. Following their work on the Avengers films, Anthony and Joe Russo are attached to a riches of projects, also including Cherry with Tom Holland and The Gray Man with Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling. Hemsworth also has a Netflix blockbuster coming this year with Escape From Spiderhead.

In a year where many people may have spent more time indoors than they're accustomed used to, the world needed action now more than ever. Unfortunately, there were some big-ticket items on the docket for action that were sidelined due to the pandemic, so audiences were tasked with seeking out things that could deliver at least the punch of James Bond, if not the class and high-quality suits.

Fortunately, 2020 still had a relatively good year in action, and there are certainly more than a few released that will stand the test of time as quality movies that will be revisited for generations to come. The following is a list of the best 10 films, ranked from good to greatest, with a bit of additional commentary on what made these movies such fun rides from start to finish.

10. Mulan

Even if 2020 wouldn't have happened, it's hard to believe Mulan wouldn't have delivered some of the best martial arts fight scenes we'd see all year. It's not often that Disney goes this hard on the action and, while in a normal year this film may have not made the list due to other offerings, I absolutely think it deserves a spot on the list of top action films of 2020. I could probably watch Liu Yifei kick objects at people all day, so it's a good thing this movie gives us plenty of it.

9. Honest Thief

Honest Thief is a movie that, to be completely honest, may be familiar with some viewers. Liam Neeson is the aged action hero in a plot that revolves around him being a badass and dealing out justice where needed. It won't win an Oscar but, at its heart, it's exactly what a classic action film is. It doesn't have to be great, it just has to deliver action in spades, and this movie certainly does that. Go in with the right expectations, and this is certainly a film worthy of a spot on the list.

8. Jiu Jitsu

Jiu Jitsu is the definitive movie for anyone who is a super fan of Nicolas Cage. I guess if there were one thing I could say to sell you on this movie, it's that there's a scene where Cage respectfully bows to a murderous alien Predator-type, and then the two proceed to have an epic katana fight. That's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the zany off-the-wall action in this movie, all of which seems to be at least somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

7. Project Power

I can't say Project Power was the best superhero movie I saw in 2020 (not many will), but I will say it was one of the better action movies I saw. The high-intensity action mixed with superpowers made for some especially entertaining sequences, with the fire in the apartment being one of the highlights that had me on the edge of my seat. I also liked the idea that everyone only had their powers on a temporary basis, which forced the movie not to just shower viewers with CGI heavy scenes but to rely on some good old close-quarters combat to keep the action rolling.

6. The Old Guard

The Old Guard was one of the most hyped Netflix releases of the year, and with good reason. The world got to see Charlize Theron bringing her badass energy to an action film yet again, in a Highlander-esque ensemble that really went for it with the gun battles. It was great, and it will be even greater if Netflix is able to get a sequel going, especially after that teasy post-credits scene.

5. Tenet

Christopher Nolan's Tenet was obviously going to make the list, and the action that happens in it is great. With that being said, I mentioned earlier that story isn't always important when it comes to a likable action film and, in this case, the plot did seem to get in the way of some people's enjoyment in the movie. For that reason, it's definitely a Top 5 contender for the best action film of 2020, but I can't in good conscience give it any higher than that.

4. Birds Of Prey

Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) certainly ranks on the higher end of this list and features some of the most brutal action scenes we saw in 2020. I don't think I'll ever be able to rest my legs on anything where there's a space in between my ankles and thighs for fear of someone jumping down and snapping them in half.

3. Bad Boys For Life

It took damn near two decades for Bad Boys to get another movie, but it finally happened and was well worth the wait. The action was top-notch, the tension between Mike and Marcus was a nice touch and overall, it was like the franchise hadn't lost a step in its time away. I guess if there's one complaint I can lodge, it's that I didn't like the main song from the soundtrack nearly as much as "Shake Ya Tailfeather." But hey, not everything is perfect.

2. Extraction

When I saw a kid get thrown off a roof in Extraction, I knew shit was going to get intense. In terms of balls-out action, this movie does not disappoint in the slightest, though I did have beef with it killing off so many characters that I would've loved to seen make a return in the sequel. I also thought it was a bit crazy how Chris Hemsworth's Tyler Rake managed to survive that whole ordeal at all, but I guess if John Wick can keep on ticking after three movies, he can, too.

1. Wonder Woman 1984

2020 was a downer year for film, but even one of the worst years on record managed to save its best or last. In Wonder Woman 1984, Gal Gadot is kicking ass, taking names, and reminding us along the way that movies are coming back in a big way in 2021, even if the future of theaters may still be up in the air. Even so, this one is definitely the newest on the list but without question, the best bang for your buck when it comes to superhero action.

In a year that saw massive movies delayed or marred by theater closures, Netflix’s Extraction proved to be a success. Although the Chris Hemsworth-led film was always meant to hit streaming, I don’t think anyone could have predicted how much of an impact it would have. Not only did it receive mostly positive reviews from critics, but it also became the most-watched film in Netflix’s history. So it didn’t come as much of a surprise when the streamer greenlit a sequel. However, writer and producer Joe Russo is now teasing much more for the future of Extraction.

Joe Russo, who most know for his work within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, wouldn’t give too many specifics, but he says the streamer is considering creating a universe of Extraction-related films. As a result, a few of the film’s characters could end up with spinoffs of their own:

Extraction introduced a lot of interesting characters, each with different shades of grey. With this, there’s definitely plenty of room to flesh them out. When it comes to spinoffs, David Harbour’s Gaspar is definitely a prime candidate. It would be nice to see a prequel film that chronicles his life before the events of the film. It would also be cool to see young Ovi headline a film of his own.

Based on Joe Russo’s comments to Collider during its CCXP panel, it sounds like Joe and Anthony Russo are taking some cues from the MCU in crafting this new world. So it would seem that audiences can definitely expect a bit of crossover:

The MCU has become a template for mapping out cinematic universes, though studios that have tried to replicate have ended up with varying results. However, the Extraction franchise does have a leg up due to the Russo Brothers’ involvement. During their time at Marvel, the two handled four of the biggest films in the franchise. Needless to say, they’re great fits for the world of Extraction.

Netflix has steadily releasing movie content over the past years, as the streaming wars between various services rages on. This year Netflix released its biggest movie yet: Extraction starring Chris Hemsworth. Directed by Sam Hargrave and written and produced by Marvel alums The Russo Brothers, the action flick became the service's most popular title shortly after its release in April. And now Joe Russo has revealed when they're hoping to begin production on an Extraction sequel.

Given the record-breaking nature of the original Extraction and its purposefully ambiguous ending, the movie's sequel quickly became inevitable. And while Chris Hemsworth recently teased that more than one follow-up might be coming down the line, Joe Russo addressed when Extraction 2 will hopefully go into production. As the writer/producer put it,

Well, that's exciting. It looks like Joe Russo and company are hoping that Extraction 2 can start filming sometime in 2021. Work is currently being done on the sequel's script, and it's clear that the cast and crew are jazzed to dive back into Tyler Rake's pulse pounding adventures. Fingers crossed that filming actually happens in the next calendar year.

Joe Russo's comments to Comic Book are sure to excite the countless Netflix subscribers who streamed Extraction upon its release last spring. While The Russo Brothers previously teased that there were plenty of ideas for future installments, it's now clear that the sequel's story is being refined. And with hopes that the first sequel begins principal photography over the next year, we might be getting that highly anticipated blockbuster sooner than originally anticipated.

Narratively, there are already threads to pull from for Extraction 2. While Chris Hemsworth's Tyler Rake seemingly perished in the final conflict, the movie's last shot revealed his silhouette still looking out for Ovi. The ultra-deadly protagonist will be back to dispatch countless more enemies, but we'll have to see if Ovi returns as a major character in the developing sequel.

Fans are also eager to see if more of Tyler Rake's backstory is revealed in Extraction's upcoming sequel. We met a few characters from the protagonist's life in the first movie, including David Harbour's backstabbing Gaspar. Additionally, it'll be interesting if the relationship with Golshifteh Farahani's Nik Khan, is further expanded in the developing movie.

Chris Hemsworth is sure to be a busy man for the next few years. Because in addition to possibly filming Extraction 2 in 2021, he's also going to be hard at work with his ongoing role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hemsworth is currently in pre-production for Taika Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder, which also marks the first time a Marvel hero has been granted a fourth solo flick. Clearly the 37 year-old actor has a ton of action sequences in his future.
