Moms are strong by nature but TV's toughest moms rule their roost with high standards, great expectations and strong discipline. From sitcom staples like Roseanne Conner and Clair Huxtable to dramatic dames like Cersei Lannister and Cookie Lyon, these iron-fisted mamas don't get the credit they deserve when it comes to their strict and stern parenting styles. Here are 32 of our favorites. 

Roseanne Conner (Roseanne)

The fierce working-class "domestic goddess" at the center of the ABC sitcom Roseanne was always crazy-quick with a wisecrack and was never one to hold back an opinion. But though known for her loud, sarcastic and domineering nature, Roseanne Conner (Roseanne Barr) was always loving and protective towards her four kids, daughters Becky (Lecy Goranson and Sarah Chalke) and Darlene (Sara Gilbert), and sons D.J. (Michael Fishman) and Jerry (Cole and Morgan Roberts).

Clair Huxtable (The Cosby Show)

Despite having to juggle raising five children, maintaining a household and continuing a successful law career, The Cosby Show's Clair Huxtable (Phylicia Rashad) was always a vision of class and composure. While her husband Cliff was the more fun-loving and boisterous parent, Clair was the disciplinarian of the Huxtable residence and was assertive in teaching her kids about responsibility and respect. 

Peggy Bundy (Married... With Children)

With her refusal to cook, clean or cater to her boorish husband Al (Ed O'Neil), Peggy Bundy (Katey Sagal) from the beloved blue-collar comedy Married... with Children was TV's ultimate anti-housewife. Where other small-screen moms used their iron fist to ensure order and discipline, Peg unapologetically prioritized her own couch-sitting, Oprah-watching "Me Time" over traditional parenting and domestic work. But that doesn't mean she didn't regularly make time to voice her opinions about her lackluster hubby and kids Kelly (Christina Applegate) and Bud (David Faustino).

Wilma Flintstone (The Flintstones) 

When you're married to a literal caveman, it's no surprise that Wilma Flintstone had to be level-headed and strong-willed for the sake of her family. Throughout the classic cartoon series The Flintstones, the Stone Age mama was tender and caring to her hubby Fred and daughter Pebbles but was known to utilize a firm hand — and a frying pan — when things got a little too rambunctious in her household. 

Claire Dunphy (Modern Family)

Often regulated to being the strict mom opposite goofy dad Phil (Ty Burrell), Claire (Julie Bowen) is the hardworking and often anxiety-ridden head of the Dunphy household. In trying to wrangle her husband and three children — Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter) and Luke (Nolan Gould) — The Modern Family matriarch can regularly be neurotic and controlling but every ounce of that effort clearly comes from a place of love. 

Jessica Huang (Fresh Off The Boat)

Just as her husband Louis (Randall Park) described her, Jessica Huang (Constance Wu) from the ABC sitcom Fresh Off the Boat is "aggressive yet elegant." No-nonsense, traditional and very competitive, she pushes both her spouse and their sons Eddie (Hudson Yang), Emery (Forrest Wheeler) and Evan (Ian Chen) to succeed in their careers and academics, respectively. For example, she's plenty pleased with Evan's future plans of becoming "doctor/president," but less so when Eddie reveals that he wants to go to culinary school instead of college.

Cersei Lannister (Game Of Thrones)

Like many things in her life, Cersei Lannister's (Lena Headey) relationship with her children throughout Game of Thrones was often fueled by her own pride and need for power. However, that doesn't mean that Cersei wouldn't kill for her kids — and she did. When it came to the safety of Joffrey (Jack Gleeson), Myrcella (Nell Tiger Free) and Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman), she parented with a leonine fierceness, to the danger of her enemies. 

Florida Evans (Good Times)

First introduced as a feisty maid in Maude, strong-willed Chicago mother Florida Evans (Esther Rolle) is the heart and soul of the original Good Times. Despite considerable financial issues and a never-ending list of chores and responsibilities, Florida always kept her household in line, offering up stern but loving discipline and instilling valuable morals in her three children J.J. (Jimmy Walker) Thelma (Bern Nadette Stanis), and Michael Evans (Ralph Carter). 

Lois Wilkerson (Malcolm In The Middle)

As the mother of five highly mischievous and unruly young boys, we really can't blame Malcolm in the Middle's Lois Wilkerson (Jane Kaczmarek) for being a touch stubborn, overbearing and hotheaded. Lois genuinely cares about her children, but her idea of discipline is jokingly dubbed "sadistic" by the boys: "Your punishment isn't over until that bathroom floor is so clean you'll be eating off it. Which is what you'll be doing for the next three weeks," she memorably punished son Reese in Season 6. 

Norma Bates (Bates Motel)

Now, we're certainly not suggesting that Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga) had a healthy parenting style throughout the A&E horror drama Bates Motel, but she certainly was a devoted, if domineering, mother to Norman (Freddie Highmore). Norma can be clingy and critical of her son — and has especially harsh opinions about the girls Norman hangs out with — but she always does everything in her power to protect him. 

Emily Gilmore (Gilmore Girls)

It seems like the only people Emily Gilmore (Kelly Bishop) is more judgmental of than her own daughter Lorelai (Lauren Graham) — no picnic in the mom department, herself — are her maids, who she seemingly hired and fired every other episode of Gilmore Girls. The wealthy matriarch of the eponymous family is known for her high standards, snooty attitude and controlling nature: a textbook example is forcing Lorelai and granddaughter Rory (Alexis Bledel) to attend Friday night dinner at her home every week, no exceptions. 

Debra Barone (Everybody Loves Raymond)

A classic example of a TV mom having to play the "bad cop" to a "fun dad" type is Debra Barone (Patricia Heaton) from Everybody Loves Raymond. While husband Ray (Ray Romano) often gets up to nearly as many hijinks as their kids Ally (Madylin Sweeten), Geoffrey and Michael (Sullivan and Sawyer Sweeten), Debra is all business. She's responsible, hardworking and not afraid to speak her mind — except, it seems, when it comes to her meddling mother-in-law Marie (Doris Roberts). 

Harriette Winslow (Family Matters)

The matriarch of the Winslow family (largely played by Jo Marie Payton but replaced with Judyann Elder in Family Matters' final season) knows order and discipline: she left the police force when she became pregnant with her eldest, Eddie (Darius McCrary). Raising three kids, Harriette is regularly the voice of reason in the Winslow household but is a sharp-tongued disciplinarian when she needs to be. 

Colleen Donaghy (30 Rock)

Portrayed by the legendarily brash Elaine Stritch, the mother of Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) always dishes out tough love when it comes to her son. With just one of her many characteristically biting quips (“Don’t talk to me like that Jack. I breastfed you for nine years!”) Colleen is able to instantly turn her slick, successful businessman of a son into a fearful little boy. 

Beverly Goldberg (The Goldbergs)

The Goldbergs' Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) puts the "mother" in "smother" — hugs are mandatory and she can often be found meddling in various areas of her kids' worlds, from school to sports to social life. But the snuggies-loving matriarch can be strict, tough and opinionated, not only when it comes to her children Erica (Hayley Orrantia), Barry (Troy Gentile) and Adam (Sean Giambrone) but also herself: "I have failed as a mother!" is the character's main catchphrase. 

Galina ‘Red’ Reznikov (Orange Is The New Black)

Yes, even prisoners need a mother figure and Litchfield Penitentiary has Red (Kate Mulgrew). Compassionate but very cunning — this is a woman who was in cahoots with the Russian Mafia, after all — she rules her block of the prison with a watchful eye, explicitly prohibiting her girls from partaking in drugs whilst running a well-oiled smuggling ring to get them the contraband goods they need. 

Vivian Banks (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air)

Firstly, we're specifically talking about Aunt Viv as portrayed by Janet Hubert for the first half of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. (Daphne Maxwell Reid took over the role in season four after Hubert was dismissed from the show.) As no-nonsense as she was nurturing, Hubert's take on the character was more fiery than her successor, a strong, confident university professor who wasn't afraid to lay down a hard lesson to her three children, her students or her troublemaking nephew (Will Smith). 

Marge Simpson (The Simpsons)

Marge is the blue-haired, bee-hived moralistic center of the Simpsons family. With a fam that includes an oafish husband like Homer, a notorious prankster like Bart and an eternal infant like Maggie, The Simpsons matriarch has to run a tight ship to maintain order in her antics-filled household. She doesn't approve of the kids' violent video games or cartoons, has followed Bart's whereabouts through his cell phone and is always pushing her family to go to mass. As Homer says of his wife: "If it were up to [Marge], all we would ever do is work and go to church."

Violet Crawley (Downton Abbey)

Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham (played by Dame Maggie Smith), is not exactly known for being a cuddly grandmother sort. Instead, the stately Downton Abbey matriarch is defined by her dry wit, direct nature and deep investment in maintaining the family's traditions, honor and legacy. 

Barbara Howard (Abbott Elementary)

Barbara Howard (Emmy winner Sheryl Lee Ralph) didn't just raise kids of her own at home — she's raised whole classrooms full of impressionable youngins as a kindergarten teacher at Willard R. Abbott Elementary School for the past two decades. Super old-school (no, she will not be learning that new teaching technology, thank you very much) and strictly religion, she's the kind of teacher who quiets rowdy classrooms the second she steps foot into them. 

Tami Taylor (Friday Night Lights)

As both a mother to teen daughter Julie (Aimee Teegarden) and little Gracie Belle (Madilyn Landry) and a counselor at Dillon High School to countless students, Connie Britton's tough yet compassionate Tami Taylor regularly guided the youth with equal parts firmness and fairness. Through five seasons of Friday Night Lights, she was a sounding board and a calm authority, but always with a little bit of Southern sweetness sprinkled on top. 

Jill Taylor (Home Improvement)

The lion-hearted leading lady of the Taylor family, Jill (Patricia Richardson) raises her three sons Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan), Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) and Mark (Taran Noah Smith) with a stern hand and Type-A attitude while also remaining lovingly perceptive and good-naturedly allowing for silly moments. However, you know that when she addresses her husband Tim (Tim Allen) or her sons by their full name, somebody is definitely in trouble. 

Cookie Lyon (Empire)

Talk about one tough cookie: Empire's queen bee Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson) tells it like it is, demands respect and doesn't tolerate nonsense in any aspect of her life, including when it comes to her children Andre (Trai Byers), Jamal (Jussie Smollett) and Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray). She can be extremely headstrong and brash, but she definitely has a caring and compassionate side and she always puts her family first. 

Sophia Petrillo (The Golden Girls)

Sarcasm and sass certainly seem to be genetic in the Petrillo household: both mom Sophia (Estelle Getty) and daughter Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur) possess each personality trait in spades. As Dorothy's actual parent and the surrogate mother of her roommates Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan) and Rose Nyland (Betty White), Sophia doles out wisecracks and criticisms often — about Dorothy’s lack of love life, Blanche’s promiscuity and Rose’s stupidity — but beneath all of her hilarious put-downs beats a lot of love. 

Nalini Vishwakumar (Never Have I Ever)

Never Have I Ever's Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan) can be hard on her teen daughter Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) but her overly strict and at times overbearing nature stems from not only her traditional Indian upbringing but also her sheer love and concern for her child. (As fans no doubt remember, Nalini lost her husband to a heart attack before the start of the series, a trauma which sparked temporary paralysis in her daughter.) Sometimes it's hard for her to show tenderness, but her heart is always in the right place. 

Olivia Walton (The Waltons)

Yes, Olivia Walton (Michael Learned) is an exceedingly sweet and compassionate lady, but there's one area of her life in which she does not play around: her parenting. She prompts all seven of her children (John-Boy, Jason, Mary-Ellen, Ben, Erin Walton, Jim-Bob and Elizabeth) to have good manners and posture, requires them to read the Bible and never miss Sunday service, and will resort to scolding her children if they misbehave. 

Carmela Soprano (The Sopranos) 

Steely and steadfast, Carmela Soprano (Edie Falco) is like any good Italian-American mom: she's armed with a deep sense of obligation to her family, works hard to create a (somewhat) stable environment for daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) and son A.J. (Robert Iler), and can make a mean lasagna. With her husband Tony (James Gandolfini) busy with Mafia business, Carmela does the lion's share of the parenting and when it comes to chastising her children, she's proven to be just as formidable as her spouse.

Thelma Harper (Mama’s Family)

Known simply as Mama, Thelma Harper (Vicki Lawrence) from the NBC sitcom Mama's Family headed her household with a sharp wit, an acid tongue and a quick temper. Bluntly outspoken and hilariously grumpy, the series version of the character was actually reportedly softer-edged than the original iteration conceived for The Carol Burnett Show. And despite Mama's frequent bickering and bad attitude, all of her cooking, cleaning and curmudgeonly care is clearly out of love.  

Gemma Teller Morrow (Sons Of Anarchy) 

A more hard-edged mama than her other famous TV mom character Peg Bundy, Katey Sagal's Gemma Teller Morrow is unapologetic about how protective she is of not only her son Jax (Charlie Hunnam) and grandchildren but also her surrogate family, the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club. Equipped with equal parts savagery and vulnerability, she's adapted to her gritty environment and can be tough, competitive and manipulative in the lengths she'll go to to defend those she loves.

Penelope Alvarez (One Day At A Time)

Don't let her quirky, fun-loving demeanor fool you — as One Day at a Time's main madre Penelope Alvarez (Justina Machado) is quick to remind you, she's a "total badass." As a single Cuban-American mother, a nurse practitioner and a former Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, "Lupe" has a strong work ethic and sense of discipline, which she makes sure to instill in her children Elena (Isabella Gomez) and Alex (Marcel Ruiz).

Evelyn Harper (Two And A Half Men)

Son Alan Harper (Jon Cryer) doesn't jokingly call her "the queen of darkness" for nothing. Yes, the wealthy and five-time-widowed Evelyn (played by Holland Taylor) can be quite cold, callous and critical when it comes to her sons Alan and Charlie (Charlie Sheen) and grandson Jake (Angus T. Jones). She majorly disapproves of Alan's failed marriages as well as Charlie's personal hobbies — granted, the latter is drinking, gambling and womanizing, so she might be onto something. 

Lynette Scavo (Desperate Housewives)

Having to deal with four demanding children (Porter, Preston, Parker and Penny) as a stay-at-home mom while her husband Tom (Doug Savant) is at the office every day, Lynette (Felicity Huffman) is understandably stressed much of the time, which tends to manifest itself as a neurotic and controlling nature. She also often tends to go over the top when it comes to disciplining her children — for example, she once ditched her kiddos on the side of the road to teach them about following orders. 

September 30 marks 41 years since the first episode of Cheers aired on NBC. Despite almost being canceled after its first season, the sitcom prevailed, and it is now, arguably, one of the many legendary shows in American television history. The success of Cheers led to a few spin-offs, including Fraiser, which is being revived, and it continues to be referenced frequently in pop culture. Even after 41 years, this comedy has stayed relevant in the zeitgeist as major shows, like Ted Lasso, The Simpsons and more have shown their love for the classic sitcom through fun Easter eggs and references. 

Cheers gave us some iconic actors including Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman and John Ratzenberger. It also has one of the best sitcom theme songs ever. However, my favorite contribution this show has made to pop culture is how it continues to find ways to inspire television shows. From Emmy-winning sports dramedies to sci-fi series and, of course, The Simpsons, here are just a few great Cheers easter eggs hidden in major TV shows. 

Ted Lasso

Ted Lasso is actually rife with Cheers references, which shouldn’t be that surprising since co-creator and star Jason Sudeikis is the nephew of Cheers actor George Wendt. In fact, there’s a signed portrait of Wendt on the walls of the kabob place Roy Kent frequents in the show. 

However, the big Cheers reference happens in the Season 3 finale of the show. The pub that Mae Green runs and the bar in Cheers both feature a picture of Apache leader and medicine man Geronimo on the wall for the shows' entire runs. However, the picture is only a focal point at the end of both shows when Sam in Cheers and May in Ted Lasso realize the photo is slightly crooked and move to straighten it. It's a subtle but emotional callback for fans of both series. 

New Girl

New Girl creator Elizabeth Meriwether once told Salon: “I love Cheers. Constantly, I’m thinking about Cheers and what they did.” So again, it’s no surprise that she would find ways to reference the show in her own iconic sitcom. 

In Season 2 of the show, Jess starts dating Sam, an emotionally revered pediatrician. Though things don’t work out originally, Sam returns in Season 5, only this time he’s the one to break up with Jess. He does so after realizing he’s in love with his med school colleague Diane. 

On the surface, this doesn’t sound like much of a Cheers reference. However, super fans get it immediately since Sam and Diane were a legendary “will-they-won’t they” romantic pairing.

The Good Place

Ted Danson never stopped acting on television, but he became a household name to a new generation of TV fans thanks to the success of The Good Place. There, he plays Michael, a Bad Place architect who is running a neighborhood that's supposed to feel like the Good Place.

With Danson in a main role, it was only a matter of time before The Good Place referenced Cheers. The moment happens in Season 2 when Michael follows Eleanor to Earth and poses as a bartender. Not only is Michael pretending to be a bartender (the same job as his Cheers character Sam), but he’s also dressed similarly to him, sporting a blue plaid button-down. Fans may never get a Cheers reboot, but at least they got to see an older Sam in an abstract sort of way.

Stranger Things

While Cheers references mostly appear in sitcoms, given it influenced sitcom history greatly, occasionally, it makes its way into a drama. Given Stranger Things' dedication to honoring the '80s, it’s no surprise that the sci-fi show features a Cheers reference, given that the comedy originally aired from 1982 to 1993. 

The reference comes in Season 3 when Joyce is eating dinner at home alone. The television is on, and it is playing an episode of Cheers where Sam and Diane are talking to each other on the phone. The sitcom scene sparks sadness in Joyce as she remembers an earlier conversation she and her late boyfriend Bob had about the couple’s will-they-won’t-they relationship. Ironically, Joyce is in her own will-they-won’t-they style relationship with Jim Hopper. 

How I Met Your Mother

How I Met Your Mother is an iconic sitcom in its own right and one that followed in Cheers spin-off footsteps with How I Met Your Father. And yet, despite its success on its own, How I Met Your Mother still found it necessary to honor the beloved sitcom of the '80s. 

One of the more memorable Cheers references happens in Season 7 when Ted and Barney decide to turn their apartment into a bar for New Year’s Eve. They name it Puzzles, and they hang a banner that is eerily similar to the Cheers bar sign in the sitcom. To make the reference even more iconic, Ted and Barney write a theme song for Puzzles, which is to the same tune as Cheers’ iconic theme song. 

The Goldbergs

As a modern sitcom set in the 1980s, it was only a matter of time before The Goldbergs found a way to pay homage to Cheers. The reference is one of the more outright callouts, considering it features some of the original cast. 

In Season 7, Erica’s long-term boyfriend Geoff decides to start a food delivery service, which quickly becomes a disaster. While running around town to locate Murray’s missing sandwich, Geoff interacts with several neighbors, including Cheers stars Rhea Perlman, George Wendt, John Ratzenberger, and Kirstie Alley. 

The Simpsons

The Simpsons parodies and references just about everything, so it’s no surprise that Cheers found its way to Springfield. In fact, it's been featured in the hit animated show many times over the course of its 35+ seasons. 

From a wonderful couch gag in Season 20, where the family gets turned into the iconic Cheers characters, to an episode in Season 3 where the show parodies the theme song, The Simpsons has some of the most iconic references to the classic comedy. However, one of the best references happens in Season 6 when Homer is determined to find a new bar, and he stumbles into an animated version of Cheers. The episode sees Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, Rhea Perlman, John Ratzenberger and George Wendt reprise their roles in animated form, and it even features an animated Fraiser. 

It’ll be interesting to see what other shows reference Cheers in the years to come. Perhaps Abbott Elementary will take a stab at it, given Janine and Gregory’s own will-they-won't-they relationship. Or maybe Bob’s Burgers will finally get around to somehow working a Cheers reference into its latest season. Regardless, it seems like the cultural influence of the beloved sitcom isn’t going away anytime soon. 

Streaming Cheers is a little difficult at the current moment. Seasons 1 through 4 are available to stream with a Hulu subscription, while Seasons 2 through 11 are available via a Paramount+ subscription. 

The Goldbergs has been keeping the ‘80s alive on ABC for 10 years through the eyes of Adam Goldberg and his eccentric family. However, all good things must come to an end, and — just like the decade — the long-running sitcom has done just that. A Back to the Future-themed series finale aired May 3, and Wendi McLendon-Covey, who has portrayed Goldberg matriarch Beverly for the duration of the show’s 10 seasons, posted a bittersweet tribute to the series that she did not know was ending.

In “Bev to the Future,” it appeared that Wendi McLendon-Covey’s character was starting to move on from Murray — after Jeff Garlin left The Goldbergs amid allegations of misconduct — as Beverly reconnected with former flame George (Rob Corddry). The actress seems ready to move on as well, as she closed the chapter on the past decade with a sweet Instagram montage of photos and behind-the-scenes moments: 

If you thought the Season 10 finale didn’t feel like a goodbye fitting of a series that had been on the air for 10 years, that’s because it wasn’t intended to be, and the showrunners recently spoke about the stories they had planned for a potential Season 11. They also said if they’d known ABC was canceling The Goldbergs, they would have made some changes to the final episode.

With the showrunners unaware of the impending cancellation, the cast also had no way of knowing that would be the last time they would play the Pennsylvania family members. That might have been a good thing, though, according to Wendi McLendon-Covey, who told TVLine:  

Ten years is a significant amount of time for anybody, so there was probably no pain-free way to get the news that that chapter was closing. While the cast probably felt a little blindsided, finding out there would be no 11th season days after they’d shot their final scenes, the actress said at least they didn’t have to worry about being overly emotional on set. 

Even without confirmation about their future, though, the Reno 911! actress did admit there was some extra sentimentality happening amongst her colleagues over the last week of filming. She continued: 

Factors that played a part in ABC’s decision to cancel the series — which was the second-longest currently running scripted show on the network behind Grey’s Anatomy — was a combination of declining ratings, rising licensing costs and ABC not owning the series outright. Some would argue, however, that the writing had been on the wall for the series since George Segal’s death in 2021. 

Hopefully we won’t be without Wendi McLendon-Covey on our screens for too long, as she’s already been cast in the  pilot for a new sitcom called St. Denis Medical, a mockumentary set in an Oregon hospital. The Goldbergs bowed at ABC after ten seasons, ending the adventures of Adam Goldberg and his eccentric family. "Bev to the Future" might've felt like just another episode outside of a montage at the end, and fans may be curious as to why there were future storylines teased in a series finale. Co-showrunners Alex Barnow and Chris Bishop shared why that is and what their hopes were for Season 11. 

The final episode of The Goldbergs is one that will undoubtedly be rewatched by those with a Hulu subscription for years to come, but it didn't feel as big as most series finales are. Audiences saw Adam try to stop his mom from reconnecting with an old flame at her high school reunion, and Barry and Joanne eloped to prove they were responsible adults. It seemed as though the writers were setting up more hijinks in another season, and the showrunners explained to TVLine why that was.

The Goldbergs Cast And Crew Didn't Know Season 10 Was The End

While it seems like a growing number of shows as of late have early notice of an ending, The Goldbergs' team was not informed of its cancellation before finishing Season 10. Had the small montage of the characters at the start and end of the series been removed, viewers out of the loop might not have even known it wasn't returning. 

Alex Barnow explained when they first found out about the show's cancellation and his thoughts on what they would've done had they known sooner:

"Bev to the Future" was very self-contained and centered primarily around the movie Back to the Future. The episode was absolutely loaded with nods to the beloved Michael J. Fox movie, complete with a guitar solo that confused attendees and even a DeLorean. 

It was great for those who love Back to the Future and all the complicated mother/son questions that come from it, but I wouldn't blame fans for feeling like it didn't have the weight of a proper series finale. Chris Bishop noted that had they known cancellation was coming, they would've rethought elements of the episode:

The Goldbergs finale was still solid and constructed a good enough ending for its characters. There have been far worse conclusions for shows, and some that didn't even get endings at all. Plus, let's not forget that Season 10 happening at all despite Jeff Garlin's midseason exit in Season 9 was pretty impressive. 

What The Goldbergs Season 11 Would've Covered

When The Goldbergs writers constructed the Season 10 finale, obviously, they were laying the groundwork for Season 11. Those who suspected that Wendi McLendon-Covey's Bev would have one of the major storylines of that season were right on the money, as the showrunners confirmed we would've seen more of her and her old boyfriend George. 

Rather than just a hint that Bev would move on following the death of Murray, there was going to be a new relationship. Alex Barnow laid it all out and how Season 11 of The Goldbergs would've played out: 

Alex Barnow concluded by saying that they obviously didn't get the chance to play that story out, but the good vibes at the end might suggest a happy ending for all is possible. 

The Goldbergs is done at ABC but will live on in streaming. Much like the '80s, it will never die, though I don't think anyone should hold their breath for spinoffs with Wendi McLendon-Covey landing a new tv project.

Since the early days of its second season, ABC’s The Goldbergs has provided a professional home for star Sam Lerner, whose Geoff Schwartz has been a fan favorite for much of that stretch. As such, it only makes sense that his longtime sitcom co-stars were quick to reach out after he shared the news that his uncle Michael Lerner, Hollywood icon known for works such as Elf, and Barton Fink, passed away over the weekend. 

Sam Lerner took to Instagram to share a loving and kindhearted message about his talented uncle, while also showing off plenty of picture’s from the actor’s career. Here’s what he had to say about Michael Lerner’s passing:

Quite a loving and honor-driven post from the Monster House voice actor, and it's clear there was a lot of love going around this particular sector of the Lerner family tree. And it's clear that the Eight Men Out star had a big influence on his nephew's career goals. Considering the older actor's first handful of years getting regular Hollywood gigs had him on memorable shows such as The Brady Bunch, That Girl and The Doris Day Show, only to go on and land nearly 200 other roles throughout the industry. (Though never on The Goldbergs, unfortunately.) 

Quite a few of Sam Lerner's co-stars, friends and followers reached out with condolence-filled messages following his reveal. One actor who rushed to share his feelings was The Flash soon-to-exit star Grant Gustin, who said the following:

Fear the Walking Dead alum Alycia Debnam-Carter shared a heart emoji in response to Sam Lerner's news, while Flight Attendant and Glee vet Nolan Funk expressed how sorry he was to hear the news. The Hollywood icon's death clearly serves as a major blow to Lerner, who is already dealing with having to say farewell to the biggest TV gig he's landed so far when The Goldbergs ends with Season 10's conclusion. The show wrapping up at ABC was partially expected in the aftermath of Jeff Garlin's exit in Season 9, with the tenth season itself being something of a surprise when it was ordered. 

While TV sitcoms can often seem like the cheeriest places possible to work on a daily basis, that’s obviously not always the case. And for a few years now, audiences have been aware that ABC’s The Goldbergs was just such a place where behind-the-scenes tensions were having an effect on at least some of its lead actors. Things came to a heated head in late 2021, with star Jeff Garlin exiting the show under unclear circumstances, despite his character living on in various ways until being officially killed off going into its tenth season. Star Wendi Mclendon-Covey has addressed the troublesome topic in the past, and recently shared some more honest thoughts about the situation, while making it clear it’s not a fun topic for her.

Speaking with Bravo’s Andy Cohen on his Sirius radio show, McClendon-Covey talked about the long-running ABC sitcom coming to an end this year, though she already has another comedy project lined up.When Cohen asked her about Bev becoming a widow after Jeff Garlin’s somewhat mutual ousting, she spoke in a measured tone, clearly not wanting to dig into things too much. In her words:

Not to apply tone (or a lack of it) where it’s unwarranted, but Wendi McClendon-Covey’s answer did not appear to be overtly displeased over the concept of Garlin leaving, and any foul feelings seemed to be aimed more at the fact that it took so long for that outcome to happen. She also appeared to indicate that she and others made complaints that weren’t listened to, though she didn’t go into detail on that front. 

In fact, when Cohen pushed a little further and asked whether it was a sudden thing, or if there had been a lengthy lead-in, the Goldbergs star and Reno 911 fave pulled back as politely as can be with a frank request:

Though she apologized for asking, Andy Cohen found it to be quite refreshing for her to plead the fifth in such a way, as opposed to dancing around the topic and offering empty answers. It’s obviously her right to keep her thoughts and memories to herself until deciding to talk about it openly, if that point ever comes. No other co-stars have shared lengthy details about Garlin’s exit and on-set behavior, either, so she’s not alone in keeping mum about it.

Ahead of the big exit, Jeff Garlin addressed rumors that he would be fired, saying that would never happen, but spoke in non-specific terms about being aware of his actions on-set being bothersome and against the wishes of his superiors. At the time, he called it “silly stuff,” but for Wendi McClendon-Covey to feel shades of PTSD about that time makes it sound a bit more serious. Here’s hoping she and her fellow Goldbergs stars can reach the point where it’s no longer a struggle to dwell on that topic.

The Goldbergs airs Wednesday nights on ABC at 8:30 p.m. ET, with the next new episode set for April 5, taking place in part in Pop-Pop’s former apartment. Episodes can be rewatched on demand and with a Hulu subscription.

The Goldbergs has been a comedy mainstay for ABC for a decade now, but the sitcom is slated to wrap with its current tenth season. In the case of one star, the end of The Goldbergs doesn’t necessarily mean leaving primetime for very long. Wendi McLendon-Covey, who has played Beverly Goldberg from the beginning of the series, has landed a new TV project that could bring her back to network television… although not her longtime home at ABC.

The cancellation of The Goldbergs (which could be good news for fans of Abbott Elementary) was announced back in February, marking the end of ABC’s longest-running current comedy and second longest-running current scripted show, coming in behind medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. While Wendi McLendon-Covey has been portraying Beverly Goldberg since back in 2013, she’s set to star in a pilot that would take her to NBC. 

The actress has been cast in the pilot for a new sitcom, called St. Denis Medical. According to Deadline, the show would be a mockumentary set in an Oregon hospital seriously lacking in funds and staff. Wendi McLendon-Covey will play the oncological surgeon-turned-executive director of the hospital with dreams of the future that she has yet to achieve. The doctors and nurses at this particular hospital are dedicated to treating their patients, in the face of major challenges. 

Honestly, if not for the confirmation that St. Denis Medical is a comedy and the casting of veteran comedic actress Wendi McLendon-Covey (best known on TV prior to The Goldbergs for her work on Reno 911!), the new show might sound more like a medical drama than a mockumentary. It won’t be the actress’ first project in the mockumentary format, however, as Reno 911! was produced in that style as well. 

St. Denis Medical is only in the pilot stage at this point, so there’s no guarantee that Wendi McLendon-Covey will make a triumphant return to primetime shortly after the end of her current show. That said, the pilot is being written by Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin, who have notable sitcom credits on Superstore and American Auto already, so the project should have some strong writing behind it. Another Superstore alum will direct the pilot: Venom director Ruben Fleischer. 

At the time of writing, Wendi McLendon-Covey hasn’t released a statement about her new project, but a quick caption on Instagram says a lot:

While it’s much too soon to say whether or not St. Denis Medical will receive a series order for NBC, fans aren’t losing Wendi McLendon-Covey as Beverly Goldberg just yet. The Goldbergs Season 10 returned in the 2023 TV premiere schedule on January 11, and continues telling stories in the wake of Jeff Garlin’s departure as the Goldberg patriarch. 

The sitcom established that Murray died off-screen between Seasons 9 and 10, which isn’t the first time that the Goldberg family has dealt with tragedy. In the wake of George Segal’s death, The Goldbergs said an emotional goodbye to his character in the premiere of Season 9. It seems safe to say that the show still has some emotional storylines to go along with the laughs in the remaining episodes of Season 10.

For ten seasons ABC’s The Goldbergs has mined ‘80s nostalgia and family shenanigans to create a series that had been an enduring hit for its home network. Not even the departure of major series leads like Jeff Garlin and the late George Segal could stop it, making creator Adam F. Goldberg’s semi-autobiographical comedy seemingly invincible, for a time at least. All good things must come to an end though, as The Goldbergs is cancelled and will end with the 2023 TV schedule -- though that could mean some good news for fans of rising star comedy Abbott Elementary.

How ABC Decided On The Goldbergs Cancellation

ABC’s decision to end The Goldbergs seemed to come from some garden variety concerns for a show of this age. THR hinted at a combination of declining ratings, increasing licensing fees, and the fact the network didn’t own the series outright as the factors leading them to make up their minds. Not too long after this story broke, an official confirmation was issued by the series’ official Twitter feed, shown below: 

It’s a call that might not seem too surprising to those who have followed The Goldbergs’ recent history. The passing of George Segal could be seen as the beginning of the end of the long-running show, as the sitcom lost one of its most notable characters, the lovable “Pops,”  in the wake of his absence. Even more surprising was the departure of Jeff Garlin, who left in the midst of misconduct allegations. (The show eventually saw the family patriarch killed off between Seasons 9 and 10). 

It’s the end of an era with the cancellation of The Goldbergs, which is bittersweet to those who have kept up with the show’s events in real-time. However, the silver lining is that there’s a potential for ABC’s latest hit Abbott Elementary to shine even brighter. 

Could Fans Expect An Abbott Elementary Spinoff?

While there are no plans reported at the moment, nobody would be faulted for thinking that ABC executives are hard at work trying to get an Abbott Elementary spinoff in the works. Fresh off of a Season 3 renewal, and several 2023 Golden Globes wins being added to the mockumentary comedy’s trophy case, creator/star Quinta Brunson’s meteoric feel-good hit is a hot property for both of its corporate parents.

The timing feels prime to at least be discussing an Abbott Elementary spinoff, as there’s a number of directions such a prospect could be taken in. One prime example is the rivalry between the titular learning establishment and its charter school rivals, led by guest star Leslie Odom, Jr. A series following his character Draemond in a similar fashion as the Abbott crew could make for not only an interesting contrast of lives, but also some fantastic opportunities for crossovers throwing him up against his scholastic opponents.

Again, nothing’s been written into the lesson plan at 20th Century Television and Warner Bros. Television for an official Abbott Elementary spinoff. It’s just a thrilling hypothetical scenario that we feel has to be on someone’s mind within the offices that makes these decisions. After all, even The Goldbergs had its own spinoff at the height of its powers; though one would hope that this dream scenario would last longer than the brief life that was Schooled’s two seasons.

After appearing as everyone’s favorite Mythrol chemist Junn Gobint in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, comedian and consistent TV highlight Jeff Garlin started to hit a rough patch in regards to his former broadcast home on The Goldbergs. The actor bowed out of the ABC sitcom in the midst of Season 9, with some awkward CGI trickery thrown in ahead of his character Murray being killed off between season. Since then, Garlin has been more or less absent from the small screen, and while we know he’s a lock to return for the next season HBO’s Emmy-nominated Curb Your Enthusiasm, he also just lined up another new role for a fan-favorite streaming series. 

Jeff Garlin has signed on to join the cast of the Netflix comedy Never Have I Ever Season 4, though it presumably won’t be a role we’ll get used to seeing him in for years on end. Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher’s coming-of-age tale is in the midst of putting together its fourth and final season, and I can’t imagine “incoming older white dude” would be an ideal spinoff character for this particular series. 

According to Deadline, Garlin is joining the world of Never Have I Ever as a character named Len, who’s described as being a nice dude that knows more than a thing or two about sandwich preparation. (He doesn’t seem to have a talking dog or a penchant for solving mysteries, in case anyone thought this season might cross over with Mindy Kaling’s upcoming Velma series.) While not a ton of details were shared, it sounds like Len will play an advisory role for Ranjita Chakravarty’s Nirmala, as far as her relationship situation goes, and whether or not she’ll stick to the notion of swearing off of them for all time. I think we can probably expect Devi to have a few thoughts about her grandmother’s romancing as well. 

Never Have I Ever is heading into its final season with wedding bells set to chime, though fans aren’t yet aware of who will be making that walk down the aisle. Nirmala certainly has a shot at it, depending on how decent Len is at offering advice, but it could also be Devi’s mom, as the good doc will welcome a new love interest played by Devious Maids vet Ivan Hernandez. Other options are out there, of course, but speculation will only make it seem like the season is taking that much longer to get here. 

Before the Netflix comedy returns to its loving fanbase, it’s possible we could see Jeff Garlin back in the role of Jeff Greene in Season 12 of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which will welcome back beloved guest star Richard Lewis after a health-related absence in the eleventh season. That season is currently filming, though, so it’s equally possible that we’ll see Len’s arrival before Jeff and Susie’s return.

This marks Jeff Garlin’s first casting news since his high-profile exit from The Goldbergs. In the middle of the ABC sitcom’s ninth season, which kicked off with a tribute to the late, great George Segal, rumors swirled that the actor was being fired for being difficult on the set. And seemingly before he was finished denying said rumors, it was reported that he’d exited the comedy on mutual (if not entirely amicable) terms. For the rest of the season, the producers used a mix of archival audio, lookalike stand-ins, and digitally altered footage to keep Garlin’s Murray around the house. Wisely, though, the decision was made between seasons to kill Murray off and keep the other characters’ stories going on without having to shoehorn absent characters in.

Season 10 of The Goldbergs has already seen some changes following Jeff Garlin’s exit, and it looks like one character’s storyline will be heating up. Adam’s love life could be getting a bit more interesting as One Day at a Time vet Isabella Gomez will step into a recurring role.

According to Deadline, Gomez is set to play Carmen, Adam’s new waitress co-worker at the diner where he works. Her debut episode will see Adam opting to hang with his colleagues, which includes newbie Carmen. Although there isn’t much information on how the two will interact with each other, the youngest Goldberg might just see a new relationship forming.

Adam has gone through a few girlfriends throughout The Goldbergs, and while it isn’t confirmed that Carmen will become his new love interest, it’s possible that this will be a new co-workers-turned-friends-turned-lovers storyline. Since Beverly will apparently be worrying about her son’s life in the fast crowd, Adam and Carmen’s possible love story could be delayed.

TV fans will mostly know Isabella Gomez as Elena from One Day at a Time, which has been praised for its LGBTQ+ representation. The actress was part of the cast of HBO Max’s short-lived series Head of the Class and has appeared on Star vs. the Forces of Evil, A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish, Modern Family, and Big Hero 6: The Series. The Goldbergs marks Gomez’s first TV role since the cancellation of Head of the Class.

It's unknown how many episodes Gomez will appear in, but if things go well for Adam and Carmen, she may be around for a while. Although it's hard to say with any certainty what will happen or when they will go out (if ever), I have a feeling that their friendship will be one to watch. Fans will just have to wait and see if The Goldbergs will deliver more than friendship.

Meanwhile, the tenth season of The Goldbergs has been given new life while celebrating the 1980s. There are still some storylines on The Goldbergs that fans can look forward to, especially now with a new character coming into the mix. Despite some bumps in the road in the past, like some creepy CGI, the current season of the beloved ABC comedy is going strong.

Adam F. Goldberg’s hit ABC comedy series, The Goldbergs, will be returning to the airwaves in September just as the 2022 Fall TV schedule is getting started. But when the show comes back for its 10th season (and its staggering 208th episode), it will be without one of its most notable stars: Jeff Garlin, who played family patriarch Murray Goldberg since the show debuted back in 2013.

Though some may be up to speed on all the drama behind the scenes that led to Garlin leaving the show part way through The Goldbergs Season 9 in late 2021, others could have possibly missed out on the news and are wondering where the cranky yet caring father went when show makes its return. Well, if you fall into that second camp, you’ll really find good use for the breakdown of the situation that follows below. Let’s dive into this story and work out all the details…

Jeff Garlin Departed The Goldbergs In December 2021 Following An HR Investigation Into Alleged Misconduct

In late 2021, just as The Goldbergs and other broadcast shows were preparing for their winter break ahead of Christmas, word began to spread that Jeff Garlin, who had been one of the show’s biggest stars since its inception, was being investigated for misconduct on set that was allegedly verbal and physical. No details were released at the time, but Garlin denied he was fired from the sitcom during a lengthy Vanity Fair interview conducted just before Thanksgiving, saying:

When asked about the numerous allegations abut his misconduct, the veteran comedian and star of Curb Your Enthusiasm claimed he was unaware his actions had upset people on set, going on to say that it was wrong of him to make someone feel uncomfortable.

The interview was published on December 3, 2021, and quickly built up steam as the story began to take up more and more space. Then, on December 15, 2021, Deadline reported that Garlin was departing The Goldbergs following multiple misconduct allegations and HR investigations into the matter. The outlet, citing sources, also claimed that an agreement had been reached and Garlin would not be returning to conclude the show’s ninth season or any future installments.

Prior To His Departure, Jeff Garlin Commented On The Issue During A Stand-Up Comedy Routine

In the days leading up to Jeff Garlin’s departure from The Goldbergs, the comedian gave a performance in front of a packed house at Hollywood Improv, according to Variety, where he reportedly talked about the ABC sitcom and him leaving the series he had been a part of for nearly a decade. Phones were not allowed in for Garlin’s show, which took place the same day the Vanity Fair interview was published, but a reporter in attendance explained that Garlin repeatedly told the audience how much he despised the show and that he didn’t want talk about it, though he continued to bring up it.

The Variety report went on to state that Garlin claimed he was in hot water with ABC for comments he was making on the set of The Goldbergs, which he was fed up about. According to the Variety reporter’s account, the routine was largely centered on The Goldbergs controversy and issues stemming from it. But again, no video or photos were taken that night due to phones being not allowed through the door.

A Combination Of Unused Takes, Off-Camera Dialogue, Stand-Ins, And CGI Was Used After Jeff Garlin’s Departure

Following Jeff Garlin’s departure from The Goldbergs, one question going around was: How will the comedy handle one of its lead stars suddenly no longer being on the show? Well, in December 2021, Variety reported that the plan for the second half of The Goldbergs Season 9 was to use a combination of unused takes, off-camera dialogue, and stand-ins to complete his character’s scenes. Though it appeared as if no deep fake technology or CGI would be needed, the show ended up turning to computer imagery to complete a scene near the end of the season.

In March 2022, the episode “The Wedding” caused a bit of an uproar on Twitter when fans took to the social media platform to call out the CGI that was used to include Murray Goldberg in a scene, despite Garlin no longer being in the cast. Audiences and critics alike were quick to point out just how creepy and unnatural the CGI Murray looked when shoehorned into the scene.

The Goldbergs Was Picked Up For A 10th Season In April 2022

Just when it looked like The Goldbergs would join the list of shows cancelled in 2022 due to the Jeff Garlin controversy, the series caught a break when ABC elected to renew the comedy for a 10th season to air at some point that fall, according to Deadline.

There has been no word on if The Goldbergs will continue past the upcoming season, which is slated to premiere Wednesday, September 21, 2022, though it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility if the show does, in fact, get another season order sooner or later. The series joins a list of other shows that lost main stars in recent years. In 2018, ABC cancelled the Roseanne revival after its star, Roseanne Barr, posted a controversial message on Twitter, only for the show to come back as The Conners later that fall. That show is now preparing for its fifth season.

Murray Goldberg Was Killed Off Between Seasons Following Jeff Garlin’s Departure

When The Goldbergs Season 10 premieres, the characters on the show will be dealing with a loss just like the actors on set. In August 2022, co-showrunner Alex Barnow told EW that a decision was made to kill off Murray Goldberg between seasons. According to Barnow, the new season will pick up several months after Murray’s off-screen death, meaning everyone has had time to grieve the loss and kind of start their next chapter. Barnow also explained that the new season will be more about looking forward opposed to looking back on the past.

This catches us up with Jeff Garlin’s departure from The Goldbergs and how the show plans to carry on without one of its biggest stars. Even though Garlin is gone, the hit comedy series is still being pushed as one of the biggest draws on ABC’s 2022 fall lineup of shows.

Actor Sean Giambrone is delivering the laughs on TV on two fronts: as a live-action star of ABC's The Goldbergs and voice performer for Hulu's Solar Opposites. Both shows are certainly comedies, but sharing the genre might just be where the similarities end. Giambrone’s grandmother might know that better than most, as the actor revealed she just can’t enjoy Solar Opposites the same way she does The Goldbergs. 

Solar Opposites Season 3 drops for anyone with a Hulu subscription on Wednesday, July 13, and the cast spoke with CinemaBlend about their characters and the upcoming season. I asked Sean Giambrone if he’s ever encountered fans who watch both shows, and the actor noted that while his grandmother tries to watch both, it doesn’t work out so well for her when she gets to the animated comedy:

Anyone familiar with Solar Opposites and Sean Giambrone’s character Yumyulack likely understands why that character is less palatable to the actor’s grandmother than The Goldbergs' Adam and other characters. Yumyulack, much like his fellow Solar Opposites characters, can be crude, irreverent, and violent at times. The show also hails from Mike McMahan and Justin Roiland, who first gained notoriety for their work on the popular Adult Swim series Rick and Morty. That type of humor isn’t for everyone, especially if you’re Giambrone’s grandmother.

Sean Giambrone continued to talk about his grandmother and added that despite her first experience with the show, she continues to come back to Solar Opposites at the start of every season. In short, she might tune in for Season 3, but Giambrone doesn’t imagine her binge will last long:

Solar Opposites Season 3 picks up after the show’s Christmas special from last year, which featured some truly hilarious moments that Justin Roiland could barely record. The trailer for Season 3 teased Korvo abandoning the mission to leave Earth and the family really getting into “fun” this season. Who knows what that entails, really? We’re talking about a household that thinks it's normal to keep a biome of shrunken humans living in a post-apocalyptic society in their bedrooms. Their definition of fun may differ from that of the average human being and likely isn’t in line with the types of things that Sean Giambrone’s grandmother enjoys. 

Season 3 of Solar Opposites arrives on Hulu on Wednesday, July 13. It’s just one of the many new shows debuting this summer and definitely one that audiences looking for something new to get into should check out.

I spoke to the actress following her exit on The Masked Singer, and after sharing with me how The Goldbergs almost revealed her identity on the Fox series, she shared what she knows about Season 10: 

Hayley Orrantia did note that the writers don’t give the actors any insight into what they’re planning specifically, but she apparently does know enough to say that the baby will be there. Plus, she dropped an awesome tease about Beverly Goldberg being a grandmother as one of the "fascinating" developments to look forward to. That’s not surprising, given how much people love Wendi McLendon-Covey’s character. 

The Goldbergs star could only say so much given her limited intel, but she did share one thing that she is hoping to see in Season 10. Hayley Orrantia revealed she’d like to see Barry and Joanne get their own shine in an episode and babysit Erica’s baby on the way: 

Fans of The Goldbergs can expect “baby stuff” and likely a lot more when the series returns to ABC in the fall. The show will return without Jeff Garlin, and reports indicate that his absence will be addressed on the show. That seems like the best course of action going forward, especially after all that creepy CGI the show used in an effort to keep Murray in the show. Garlin and the show arranged for his exit after a string of misconduct allegations. It’ll be interesting to see how the show proceeds without him and if Murray’s role will be filled. 

The Goldbergs is on a brief break for the summer, but anyone with a Hulu subscription can binge Season 9 and catch up before the new episodes air on ABC. Weird CGI aside, there are some great episodes to revisit.

The Masked Singer Season 7 just wrapped up on Fox, and while fans had lots of opinions about who deserved to win, it was mainly due to how much talent was in the finale. Many loved The Ringmaster, and it took a while for viewers to figure out that she was none other than The Goldbergs actress Hayley Orrantia. Weirdly enough, though, had it not been due to scheduling, fans might’ve unintentionally found out a lot sooner thanks to her ABC hit series. 

Hayley Orrantia spoke to CinemaBlend following her elimination in the finale of The Masked Singer Season 7 and revealed the wild turn of events on The Goldbergs that almost exposed her as The Ringmaster before she was officially unmasked. Orrantia talked about filming between the two shows and the unbelievable scenario that occurred that sounds like a one-in-a-million chance of happening:

In a weird turn of events, The Goldbergs wanted Hayley Orrantia’s Erica to sing the exact same song she performed while on The Masked Singer. Luckily the two episodes didn’t sync up to air on the same night, so audiences weren’t able to easily make the connection and call Orrantia out.

The scheduling of episodes was stressful enough but not the only tense part of the process. Hayley Orrantia explained that part of the reason it was all so stressful is that she couldn’t tell her Goldbergs crew that she was on The Masked Singer:

Hayley Orrantia didn’t tell The Goldbergs about her stint on The Masked Singer or a lot of people in her life about it. Orrantia said she basically only told her parents about the experience, as they’re very close and would worry if she went hours without texting them. Beyond that, she was able to keep quite a few people in the dark, so it’s a good thing The Goldbergs didn’t accidentally blow the lid off the whole surprise!

The Masked Singer Season 7 is over on Fox, but Season 8 is confirmed to be on the way. Fans can re-binge the whole season with a Hulu subscription or check out Hayley Orrantia on The Goldbergs ahead of the recently confirmed Season 10 on ABC. 

Having kept audiences warm-hearted and laughing since 2014, ABC’s black-ish is one of many beloved TV shows coming to an end in 2022, with Season 8 being its swan song.  While this season was unfortunately shorter than those in the past, the eps feel that much more important with the final episode just around the corner. ABC has finally revealed exactly when the big finale will air, along with those of other big shows like Grey’s Anatomy, and Andre and Bow will be leaving us sooner than one might think. 

With its most recent episode setting up Pops and Ruby's imminent exit that was at one point meant to set up the spinoff old-ish, black-ish is now set for its final two episodes, and the series finale will be airing on Tuesday, April 19, at 9:30 p.m. ET, according to Deadline. I know some fans out there no doubt thought the show would be airing into May and wrapping up alongside the network’s other big season finales, but there just aren’t enough episodes for that to happen. 

At this point, black-ish’s series finale hasn’t yet revealed its title, nor its general synopsis, so we’re not entirely sure how Kenya Barris & Co. will set the story up to close out. But you can bet there will be laughs, tears, probably some judgy eyebrow work from Anthony Anderson, and Tracee Ellis-Ross being a queen as always. While that last installment will unfortunately only be a normal-length half-hour, it will be immediately followed by a finale special that will feature the cast and crew reflecting on the past eight seasons and saying goodbye to a classic TV family.

ABC has plenty of new and returning shows hitting the 2022 premiere schedule later in the year, but there are a bunch of other shows beyond black-ish that need to wrap up their current seasons first. One of those shows is the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, which has kept viewers on edge each year over star and executive producer Ellen Pompeo’s deciding to call it quits or stick it out as Meredith Grey for another season. We do already know that Season 19 is coming, and it looks like Season 18 will be wrapping up in a big and special way. 

Both Grey’s Anatomy and its lead-in drama Station 19 were granted two-hour season finales, with the firehouse series’ conclusion airing a week earlier than the Grey’s finale. What’s more, ABC’s 2021-2022 TV season basically ends with the medical drama’s capper, as it will be the last finale to air, with a slot set for Thursday, May 26. Will that be the episode that sets up some kind of Minnesota-set spinoff, or will the story find a way to bring Meredith back to Seattle for good? Or could both situations happen somehow?

It should be quite an exciting May for just about everything airing on ABC, but before that month even arrives, fans can look forward to one final farewell from black-ish on Tuesday, April 19, even if it's hard for Anthony Anderson to go through with it.

Now that we're essentially in "Network TV Cancellation Awareness Season," audiences everywhere are waiting to hear what the future holds for the past year's biggest hits andmisses. Fate hasn't been so kind to now-cancelled shows such as Fox's freshman drama The Big Leap and NBC's veteran medical drama New Amsterdam (which technically has another season to go). But what of ABC's long-running '80s comedy The Goldbergs? Well, despite any predictions that the network might pull the plug in the aftermath of Jeff Garlin's midseason exit, a big behind-the-scenes move was made that points to Season 10's imminent existence.

While ABC has yet to actually confirm The Goldbergs for a Season 10 renewal, the network has solidified new contract negotiations with star Wendi McLendon-Covey, which is arguably the biggest step that could have been made in the direction of a renewal decision. What’s more, Deadline reports that the deal allegedly includes a salary increase for the beloved comedic actress and executive producer, with an option in place for a potential Season 11. It’s not clear at this time if any of The Goldbergs’ other series regulars are in the negotiation process, but McLendon-Covey’s new deal makes everyone else’s all the more likely.

Without its core stars contractually locked into place, The Goldbergs could get all the season renewals in the world and not have anyone to bring new episodes to life. As such, the contract negotiation process is a mightily important link in the chain, and with Wendi McLendon-Covey being one of the show’s busiest actors by way of outside projects, it’s possible that ABC execs felt it was most important to secure her involvement before hashing things out with others stars such as Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia, and Sam Lerner. And we can only hope those conversations would also include bringing back (and possibly promoting) excellent recurring stars like Richard Kind and Erinn Hayes.

To the network’s credit, ABC previously proved its dedication to a Garlin-free The Goldbergs when execs ordered up additional episodes to bring Season 9 to a full count.  A decision made in spite of the fact that the corner-cutting tactics being used to continue giving Murray Goldberg a viable character presence weren’t exactly met with cheers, or much of anything outside of confused horror.

While the reused archival dialogue and shot-from-behind stunt double didn’t do the show any favors, it’s the use of CGI’d Deepfake-y Jeff Garlin that earned the show some of its biggest and most surreal criticisms of its run to date. (To be sure, it was pretty creepy, and there’s no telling when or if it’ll come up again.) On the one hand, it's easy to understand why the creative team didn't want to suddenly kill Murray off, especially so soon after Pops was written off due to Hollywood legend George Segal's death in 2021. But everyone might take a revised look at that option should Season 10 come into play.

The Goldbergs is currently the longest-running live-action broadcast comedy, which definitely has value for ABC, even if the syndication game is nowhere near as lucrative as it once was for 100+ episode series. Should Season 10 happen, that would bring The Goldbergs to somewhere around 230 eps, which is a huge accomplishment during the cord-cutting era.

While the situation with The Goldbergs isn't necessarily as nerve-grinding as the annual discussions over whether or not this is the year when Ellen Pompeo is going to retire from Grey's Anatomy, it's a similar situation of one star's involvement paving the way for everyone else to stay employed. It’s fair to say that The Goldbergs has been feeling the effects of Jeff Garlin’s absence. Near the end of 2021, it was revealed that the 59-year-old actor had been under investigation for three years due to alleged physical and verbal conduct that made a number of his colleagues uncomfortable. By December, Garlin addressed the rumors and ultimately chose to walk away from the show. Around the same time, though, reports confirmed that his character would be kept around. The show, as a result,  has found some creative ways to handle Murray Goldberg and, after one person spoke out about it, series star Wendi McLendon-Covey chose to break her silence on the matter.

Due to Jeff Garlin’s absence, The Goldbergs has been utilizing body doubles and superimposing his face during post-production. The method has drawn mixed responses, with viewers making jokes about the creepy-looking CGI. Amid the hoopla, a journalist took to Twitter to share a clip from a recent episode and drop some thoughts about how the sitcom should hande the TV patriarch moving forward: 

Numerous users have since commented on the post, with many seemingly in agreement with the assessment. When Wendi McLendon-Covey spotted it, she was direct when addressing the way the show is operating in the aftermath of her co-star’s departure:

The assertion that Jeff Garlin doesn’t want to be part of the production somewhat lines up with sentiments the comedian himself allegedly made in the lead-up to his exit. Days before he left The Goldbergs, Garlin held a stand-up comedy performance in November 2021. While phones weren’t allowed at the venue, a journalist jotted down the comic’s thoughts and claimed that he criticized the show during the event. While he did express pride in the long-running comedy’s success, he apparently said that it’s not made for viewers like him. And when asked why he took the role in the first place, he purportedly yelled, “Money!”

Things still seem to be moving right along for the show, though. Shortly after the Murray actor’s departure, the series received some good news, as it was confirmed that ABC ordered four additional episodes for Season 9. As of right now, a tenth season has yet to be announced, but that increased episode order could bode well for Wendi McLedon-Covey and her co-stars.

While many network TV shows are in the throes of worrying about whether renewals are on the way — with some shows already getting the cancellation axe — ABC's The Goldbergs is just trying to making it through the end of Season 9 without giving anyone paralyzing night terrors in the form of Not Actually Jeff Garlin's patriarch Murray Goldberg. In the aftermath of the actor's ousting earlier in the season, it was revealed that Murray would still live on throughout the rest of the series by way of archival footage and digital trickery. But fans are calling the show out for such trickery being far less than magical, with Star Wars getting quick comparisons. 

In particular, the latest episode "The Wedding" has caused a mild, hilarious uproar amongst both Goldbergs fans and those who just happen to appreciate wildly obvious CGI shoehorned into live-action projects. There are deepfakes, and there is…this. It’s almost as if Jeff Garlin’s smiling face is being projected onto a pad of flesh, and that the projector was cursed by Satan and other monstrous entities. I think this person would agree with that sentiment.

I have a feeling that even though Matt Reeves already may have introduced a Joker into his Batman world, CGI Jeff Garlin would give any potential Clown Prince portrayers a run for their funny money. Or maybe Clayface...

But wait, this isn't the time for Batman speculation. Let's see a Star Wars joke!

Let it get past no one that The Goldbergs airs on ABC, owned by Disney, which owns Star Wars, which has delivered some of the most widely railed-against CGI character work in all of fiction. (Which isn't to say that it's all universally loathed, but still.)  

From Peter Cushing’s digi-resurrection as Grand Moff Tarkin and Carrie Fisher’s de-aged Leia in Rogue One to Mark Hamill’s young Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian, Star Wars knows a thing or two about making people uncomfortable with characters who aren’t really there. But not everyone wants to stay uncomfortable, of course, and this fan humorously hoped for The Goldbergs to go even harder on making the CGI successful.  

Of course, no joking sesh regarding CGI human weirdness would be complete without the granddaddy of the uncanny valley himself, Tom Hanks. 

Not everyone was entirely negative, with a couple of people saying they'd be even more interested in keeping up with The Goldbergs specifically if Murray was around a lot more as a smiling, CGI weirdo. And then the fan below wouldn't be against every show featuring an actor whose role eventually gets Murray Goldberged, as it were. 

In spite of Jeff Garlin’s exit, The Goldbergs still later earned a full episode order for Season 9, so fans can look forward to at least seven more episodes. As far as whether or not Season 10 will be ordered up, that’s a whole other discussion.

As one of TV's longest-running sitcoms that's still currently in production, ABC's The Goldbergs has had a lot to celebrate over the years, obviously outside of creator Adam F. Goldberg stepping down after Season 6 and co-star George Segal's death in the midst of Season 8. The latest high-profile setback behind the scenes of the comedy series was the exit of series regular Jeff Garlin in December 2021, but that doesn't mean the network didn't still have some good news to dish out, as ABC confirmed an additional four episodes have been added to The Goldbergs' Season 9 run.

Star Wendi McLendon-Covey was the one to deliver that great news to fans, which she did via Instagram with some especially appropriate imagery to go along with the update. 

If only Wendi McLendon-Covey's message guaranteed that Tim Meadows would be rocking legwarmers and short-shorts for all four additional episodes. Ah, I suppose one can dream.

As far as reality goes, the four-episode boost will bring The Goldbergs to a full 22-episode season, which matches the totals for Seasons 5 and 8, while other seasons have clocked in at 23 and 24 episodes. In that specific respect, hearing about ABC's decision to extend the current season is not a major surprise, to be sure. But following the news about Jeff Garlin's not-exactly-a-firing, which resulted after apparently long-held disagreements about the actor's on-set behavior, it wasn't entirely clear what the series' future would look like, nor whether ABC would choose to cancel it.

Following the actor parting ways with the sitcom, it was reported that The Goldbergs would still be keeping Garlin’s character Murray around through previously unused takes as well as utilizing other unused audio as off-camera dialogue. Beyond that, a stand-in has been used for Murray in scenes where his face isn’t required to be shown. To give the creative team some credit, they haven’t yet diverted to simply killing the character off, which would probably feel strange in the same season that bid a heartfelt farewell to Segal’s Pops. 

Fans shouldn’t expect to see any tragic turns in the additional four episodes, either, as THR reports the extra eps won’t be used to address Jeff Garlin’s absence, and presumably won’t feature Murray falling down a well or taking a trip to Mars. But fans can expect for The Goldbergs’s total episode count for Season 9 to match up with those of its Wednesday night counterparts The Wonder Years and Home Economics, which earned additional orders back in October. At this point, it’s not yet known how filled out The Conners Season 4 will be, but that’ll no doubt get worked out in the near future.

The Goldbergs airs Wednesday nights on ABC, with half of the season still left to air after its January 12 installment, titled "Hip-Shaking and Booty-Quaking." The Goldbergs has been going strong in its ninth season despite a tragedy during the eighth, but the show is in for a very big shakeup due to the departure of Jeff Garlin. The comedian was fired part of the way through Season 9, and without the show having the time to set up a way to write out his character. Based on some reports for what comes next, The Goldbergs has found a way to keep Murray Goldberg around without Garlin.

The current plan for the show is reportedly to include Murray without Jeff Garlin by using previously unused takes, off-camera dialogue, and a stand-in for group shots not requiring Murray to show his face, according to Variety. So, the show isn’t suddenly killing Murray off halfway through Season 9 or sending him off without any kind of set up. It’s not clear at this point how The Goldbergs will handle the absence of Garlin in the long run, but the character will still have a presence on the show in new episodes of Season 9.

And it’s worth noting that there is currently no guarantee that The Goldbergs has much of a future in the long run. Prior to news he had exited, Garlin actually shared that he thought the current ninth season could be the last, but for now, the show has a plan to work around the actor’s absence. At the time that Garlin was fired, the show was reportedly filming Episodes 15 and 16 for Season 9, which received an order for 22 episodes.

It should be interesting to see just how noticeable it will be that The Goldbergs is no longer airing newly-shot footage of Murray Goldberg. The use of takes that hadn’t been used before means that viewers will still get some never-before-seen content, but dialogue from earlier episodes might ring a bell for dedicated fans. Whatever happens, at least it should be less distracting than if the show had decided to recast Murray halfway through its ninth season. 

Neither ABC nor production company Sony Pictures Television have commented on the reports of how The Goldbergs will manage to keep Murray around after losing Garlin, so there’s no official way to say whether there’s a chance that Garlin could ever reprise the role. There are undoubtedly some family events that Murray would show up for… assuming he isn’t killed off.

Whatever happens, unless the show plans to keep Murray around but off-screen for a long time, the Goldberg family will have to face the loss of another family member from their daily lives, less than a full season after the death of Pops. The real-life circumstances of losing Pops and losing Murray couldn’t be much more different; only time will tell how different they are for the characters. 

The Goldbergs is currently in the midst of its winter hiatus after the midseason finale back in early December, and won’t be back with the midseason premiere until Wednesday, January 5 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. The Goldbergs is experiencing a major cast shakeup, as the hit ABC comedy is now without series alum Jeff Garlin. The actor and comedian walked away from the series after an investigation was launched into his alleged on-set behavior. Reports now claim that ahead of his departure, Garlin spoke publicly about the situation during a recent event. And it appears the star shared some less-than-flattering remarks about the show he starred on for nearly a decade. 

The Curb Your Enthusiasm alum reportedly held a standup comedy performance in Los Angeles on November 24. Per Variety, phones were not allowed at the event, though one of their reports provided a paraphrased account of what was allegedly said. According to the trade, the comedian started the show by stating that he was “depressed” about the fact that his girlfriend had recently broken up with him. He then proceeded to criticize the ABC sitcom while lamenting that he’d had to work on a show where he had to be mindful of his actions on a consistent basis. 

The 59-year-old star also allegedly commented on comedy and the current need for political correctness in the business. This led him to make an appeal when it comes to censorship, even going as far as to say that he couldn’t jokingly use the word “vagina” on the set. Apparently, he went on to say that he prefers the edgy style of comedy that’s present with his pal Larry David and co. on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm, which he also appears in.

Jeff Garlin did also reportedly say that he’s proud of the success The Goldbergs has achieved as a family sitcom and expressed gratitude for the fact that he can still land TV and film roles. However, he apparently said the sitcom just isn’t made for viewers like him. When asked why he’d done the show for so long, he enthusiastically replied, “Money!” Yet he explained that he was not getting paid for this particular event and that the proceeds would go to his “Use Me” tour.

The initial allegation reports claimed that the performer had been under investigation for three years due to alleged physical and verbal misconduct that made others uncomfortable. Before leaving the show, he commented on the HR situation, saying that he and the producers were “trying to come to a place where we come to an agreement.” With this, he stated that he would “not be doing any of my silly stuff or anything, out of respect.” He also confirmed, at the time, that he would continue to film more episodes of the series since he was still under contract with Sony. The actor ultimately left the show ahead of what would’ve been his last day of shooting.

On The Goldbergs, the actor played the role of family patriarch Murray. The crabby, but caring, TV dad was known for his biting sarcasm and his tendency to relax in his easy chair while wearing his briefs. It’s currently unclear as to how the character’s absence will be addressed within the series moving forward. However, TV Line reports that a body double was used in order to complete his final episode. 

The ABC hit is currently in the midst of its winter hiatus and is set to return to the TV schedule in 2022 ABC on Tuesday, January 5. 

The Goldbergs has managed to hold onto most of the original cast for almost the entire run of the series so far, which is an impressive feat for a network comedy halfway through its ninth season in primetime. Rumors began to circulate earlier this year that Jeff Garlin, who plays patriarch Murray Goldberg, had been fired from the show. Now, the actor and comedian has come out and addressed the rumors following allegations about his behavior on set. 

After allegations that Jeff Garlin's behavior on the Goldbergs set made former employees feel uncomfortable, he spoke with Vanity Fair to clarify whether or not he had been let go by production company and distributor Sony. He explicitly said that he “was not fired from The Goldbergs", then later elaborated when asked if he’s trying to exit the show, saying:

The “silly stuff” that Garlin mentions is what he referred to as saying “inappropriate, silly things on set” to have fun and keep his energy up, and not doing “general boundaries.” He further said that as a comedian, he thinks that “boundaries are meant to be broken.” A specific allegation about him is that he would hug people, and he admitted that he “puts the onus on them to say something” and didn't specifically hear anything from HR about it. And, as he very clearly said, he has not been fired from The Goldbergs, so viewers don’t have to expect to say goodbye to another character at this point in Season 9. 

He also made it clear that he’s not sure whether or not The Goldbergs will return for Season 10, saying:

Even if The Goldbergs does end at the close of this season, a sitcom running for the better part of a decade is an impressive feat for the entire cast. And according to Jeff Garlin, he actually “didn’t want to come back” for Season 9, which would have guaranteed a very different start to the season that already had a large change to address. He explained why he initially didn’t want to return for the ninth season:

Whatever the future holds for the Goldberg family and The Goldbergs as a show, Jeff Garlin is sticking around as Murray through at least the end of Season 9. Whether or not the show continues beyond the 2021-2022 TV season remains to be seen. The kids are growing up, with Erica getting married and Adam looking ahead to attending college as two particularly big events coming up. 

Only time will tell what the future holds for Jeff Garlin and The Goldbergs, but you can find both back on ABC with the midseason premiere on Wednesday, January 5 at 8 p.m. ET, ahead of The Wonder Years. Wednesdays are arguably the most competitive nights on network television, but ABC has cornered the Wednesday night market when it comes to sitcoms vs. the scripted dramas and reality offerings on other networks. 

The biggest new addition coming to Walt Disney World isn’t a new roller coaster, it’s a hotel. The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is promising to be unlike anything guests have ever experienced. It’s not simply a hotel, but a two night adventure that can put guests inside their own Star Wars story. And last night we got a look at some of what we’ll actually see inside the Galactic Starcruiser thanks to a Disney holiday special and The Goldbergs' Sean Giambrone.

However, if the special preview that was made part of last night’s The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration, was meant to get people excited for the Galactic Starcruiser and send people racing to their phones to make reservations, that’s maybe not what happened. A lot of people on Twitter were clearly underwhelmed by what they saw. 

The preview last night showed us a few things that had been announced, but in a more tangible fashion. We got to see the “bridge” of the Halcyon starship, and we got to watch Sean Giambrone pull a level to get to send the ship into hyperspace. We know the bridge will have some interactive elements including being able to defend the ship from attack.

We also got to see Gaia perform. She will be one of the characters on board that guests will be able to see and potentially interact with. Part of the sell of the Galactic Starcruiser is that a Star Wars-style story will be taking place around you during your stay, and you’ll have the ability to become part of that story as well.

But there’s a general feeling from many fans that what they’re actually seeing here just isn’t that impressive. It’s not that it isn’t good or that the Galactic Starcruiser won’t be fun, but it’s difficult not to consider the price tag. The Galactic StarCruiser will cost you thousands of dollars for only two days and nights and for that price, people are expecting something truly special and this maybe isn't it.  

While some might not be that impressed, it hasn’t stopped the Galactic Starcruiser from selling out for its first few months of operation. Of course, that adds another layer of questions to last night’s preview. The fact is that in an average TV viewing audience, most people are not going to be in the financial position to be able to afford two nights on the Galactic Starcruiser. And those that can, if they wanted to go book right now, would have a long time to wait. So even using this TV time to promote seems odd. 

Certainly, there’s a lot more to the Galactic Starcruiser than being able to pull one lever or see one live musical performance, some of it likely isn’t ready to show off yet, and most is probably being kept intentionally behind the curtain. The best marketing for Galactic Starcruiser won’t be clips in TV specials. It will be once people actually visit the Starcruiser. If people have good things to say after actually experiencing it, if they believe it's worth the money, they’ll tell their friends and then those friends will consider making the trip.

Spoilers ahead for the Season 9 premiere of The Goldbergs on ABC, called "The Goldbergs' Excellent Adventure."

Although The Goldbergs wrapped Season 8 back in the spring with a finale that was as funny as could be expected from the hit ABC comedy, there was an element of real-life tragedy due to the passing of George Segal, who played Pops from the very beginning. Segal died just a couple of days before filming finished on the eighth season, so the plot of the story didn't have time to acknowledge the loss. Instead, The Goldbergs dedicated the full Season 9 premiere to saying goodbye to Pops (and George Segal), and it found the perfectly bittersweet way to do it. And it involved an homage to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, in true Goldbergs style.

"The Goldbergs' Excellent Adventure" actually picked up some time after Pops died and was cremated, but it quickly became clear that the family wasn't handling the loss well. Beverly was lashing out at her friends (and confirmed that Pops died of natural causes rather than a car crash) while refusing to go walking with them, while Erica was refusing to talk about potential wedding venues. Barry was seemingly furious that Pops left him a pen while Adam got the Super Bowl watch, and Murray just wanted everybody to hurry up and get through their mourning.

So Murray recruited Bill to create a scenario to get the family to move on, which involved forging a letter from Pops' attorney to say that he wanted his ashes scattered. Instead of that simplifying the situation and the family just spreading the ashes by the tree in the yard, it turned into an elaborate quest to find Pops' favorite place. This led them from the race track to the jazz club to a diner, and introduced the friends he'd made along the way, as well as establishing how proud he was of his family.

There were flashbacks to some of Pops' best moments, and when the truth came out and the family admitted that they weren't handling the loss of Pops well, Murray came out and confessed that he's handling it the worst of them all because he hasn't been able to face it at all, because he misses Pops too. Then Adam revealed why the pen that Pops left for Barry was so significant, sharing that it was the pen he used to write all the letters to their grandmother while he was away during the war, always promising he'd come home safe to her. And by the end, Adam revealed that he knew Pops' real favorite place, and it turned out to be a tree after all.

Beverly revealed that Pops said that everything beautiful in his life "took root and blossomed" at that place, where he'd proposed to his wife all those years ago. And let me just say that there was not a dry eye in at least my house by the time Beverly was even halfway through the explanation! Erica decided that under the tree is where she wants to get married, and Adam ended by quoting Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure with "Be excellent to each other and party on."

And so the healing began, with Beverly joining her friends for walks and ready to take over Erica's wedding planning, Adam and Barry teaming up, and the family sitting down to watch one of the home movies featuring Pops. Plus, after the screen flashed a message reading "DEDICATED TO OUR POPS, GEORGE SEGAL" and flashed back to Pops happily playing his banjo, there was a tag of the whole family in track suits.

"The Goldbergs' Excellent Adventure" managed to pay a heartfelt tribute to both the beloved George Segal and Pops that definitely had its sad notes, but still served up the laughs. What better way to send him off, especially with a whole episode dedicated to him? The show definitely delivered what it couldn't at the end of Season 8, despite the tribute that was released at that point, and I would say it was the perfect way to start Season 9. The season will continue with new episodes on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC in the fall TV schedule moving forward.

ABC has never been one to shy away from nostalgia, and audiences will get a big dose of it in the Fall TV season. As a way to promote the upcoming premiere of The Wonder Years reboot with Dulé Hill, the network is bringing some OG Wonder Years stars back for guest spots across a small variety of its original comedies, including The Conners.

While The Wonder Years 2.0 will make its debut on Wednesday, September 22, ABC is setting up its midweek throwback for October 13, as not to disrupt other season premieres with the guest spots. First up that evening will be The Goldbergs, which will feature a guest appearance from the always excellent Dan Lauria. As Wonder Years fans will no doubt agree, Lauria is second to none at delivering performances that made his character Jack Arnold appear to be the most put-upon and eternally defeated character on TV. (Not unlike a grown-up Charlie Brown.) Considering The Goldbergs is set in the '80s, which is when TWY first debuted, it should be interesting to see how Lauria is utilized within that episode.

Following that evening's installment of the reimagined Wonder Years, ABC's The Conners will welcome Fred Savage back to Lanford, presumably still as Darlene's therapist Dr. Harding. Judging how things went with Ben at the end of Season 3, I'm guessing it'll take more than a couple of episodes to resolve all that, so she'll probably need another therapist visit that viewers can bear witness too. Landing Savage as a Season 3 guest star was a perfect fit for The Conners, which also stocked its cast with Married with Children's Katey Sagal and Murphy Brown's Candice Bergen (among other sitcom vets), with Seinfeld's Jason Alexander joining the ensemble in a recurring capacity in Season 4.

However it goes, that Conners ep will be followed up by a new episode of Topher Grace's Home Economics, with Danica McKellar set to guest star. As girl-next-door Winnie Cooper, McKellar won the hearts of tons of younger Wonder Years fans during those golden years, but what will she be up to on Home Economics? As it went with Dan Lauria, no character details were given, so we obviously don't know just yet, but perhaps she'll play into the publishing company or the parent of a child that gets mixed up with one of Tom and Marina's kids.

Interestingly enough, even before making his on-screen debut for The Conners, Fred Savage had already worked on six prior episodes as a director, with the sixth episode being his first. No telling whether or not he'll be helming the episode he appears in but he'll almost definitely be behind the camera for a few Season 4 installments. (Fun fact: Savage also directed two episodes of The Goldbergs.)

So remember to mark your calendars for Wednesday, October 13, for that evening's episodes of The Goldbergs, The Wonder Years, The Conners and Home Economics, with the comedy block kicking off on ABC at 8:00 p.m. ET.

As television heads into one of the more chaotic finale seasons in recent memory, with the pandemic having caused all kinds of delays and scheduling issues, audiences are as unsure as ever about the future of some of our favorite shows. While there are never any hard and fast rules when it comes to how TV networks and streaming services go about ordering renewals and announcing cancellations, it's somewhat rare to go into the month of May with so many major TV series' fates still up in the air.

Decisions for most, if not all, of the shows below will likely be made in the near future, with ABC having just recently made the call to renew The Good Doctor, while NBC announced second seasons for Young Rock and Kenan. So let's take a look at all of the biggest TV series that are still waiting to learn if they're renewed or cancelled. Note that all the shows here either debuted in the fall or at the start of the midseason, so anything that premiered more recently than that has not been included. (UPDATE: Since the initial publication of this story, many of the shows listed have received word on what the future is like, and those fates have been reflected next to the titles below.)

*The Conners - ABC (Update: Renewed On 5/14) *

As much of a TV staple as the Conner family is, going back to Roseanne's glory days, The Conners has faced some noteworthy growing pains in Season 3. The sitcom hit multiple new series lows in viewership and the key age demographic as the weeks have gone by, and all despite facing few COVID-related delays. That said, The Conners puts up good delayed-viewing numbers, so fans can probably be optimistic that a Season 4 order is on the way to bring more hilarity and emotional family drama to the table. And to the living room, and pretty much everywhere with this fam. One great sign: the cast is reportedly working out new contracts, so expect big news soon.

9-1-1 (Fox)

Now in the back half of Season 4, Fox's 9-1-1 remains one of TV's most wackadoo action-dramas, with its all-star cast surviving some truly intimidating odds. And while the show's average viewership has dipped this season, that dip hasn't been so debilitating, especially not with the solid DVR numbers it still earns on a weekly basis. So if Season 5 doesn't happen, I doubt even Bobby and Athena could handle the fan protests that would follow, even if Angela Bassett can handle anything.

The Unicorn - CBS (Update: Cancelled On 5/15)

Having capped its second season at just 13 episodes due to COVID-related production delays, the Walton Goggins-starring comedy The Unicorn has been awaiting a renewal or cancellation update from CBS since it ended back on March 18. Though it's unfortunate that Season 2's highest-rated and most-watched episodes still didn't match up with Season 1's lowest-rated and least-watched episodes, The Unicorn still often managed to beat out nearly all other network offerings on Thursday nights, save for Grey's Anatomy and Station 19, so unless CBS has other plans for that time slot, Wade will likely return for more widower foibles in a third season.

black-ish - ABC (Update: Renewed For Final Season On 5/14)

After initially gearing fans up for Season 7 with its pair of election-geared special episodes, black-ish started off strongly enough when it returned in October, but in April 2021 alone, the long-running sitcom dipped below 2 million live viewers for the first time ever. That's not a brag-worthy accomplishment, and one could easily argue that black-ish's stats could be slightly larger if there weren't so many randomly slotted off-weeks between new episodes, which is a problem that many broadcast network shows suffered. Given its prior success, and the fact that spinoffs are always being considered, I'd be surprised if black-ish was cancelled, but said surprise would likely wear off fairly quickly.

The Masked Singer (Fox)

Along with its more poorly rated spinoff The Masked Dancer, The Masked Singer has yet to receive any official updates from Fox about whether it'll get renewed for Season 6 or if it's actually a cancellation in disguise. However, the competition series is easily one of Fox's biggest hits, and even though Season 5's averages definitely aren't matching up to those from previous seasons, it could continue to slowly hemorrhage viewers for quite a while before it actually stopped being one of Fox's biggest hits. So expect a renewal for this one.

The Rookie - ABC (Update: Renewed On 5/14)

The Rookie enjoyed a ratings boon when pandemic lockdowns started in March 2020, but those rises have long since faded, and the ABC crime drama has regularly drawn fewer than 4 million viewers throughout Season 3 as a follow-up to American Idol. That said, those numbers aren't so dismal all around, and The Rookie consistently tops Sunday night programming from NBC and Fox. Plus, keeping Nathan Fillion on TV should be a law at this point, especially with Emily Deschanel in the mix, so even though it'll take some strange storytelling to keep the title relevant, expect ABC to renew The Rookie for at least one more season. (Hopefully the co-creator's new Netflix show isn't a sign of any bad news.)

SEAL Team - CBS (Update: Renewed On 5/15, Moving To Paramount+)

With a shorter episode count than years past, thanks to a delayed start, SEAL Team isn't doing quite as strongly as it has in years past, which is par for the course across the board, though its drooping demo rating is probably more worrisome than the viewership drop. And SEAL Team has also been the victim of a painfully sporadic schedule, with new episodes rarely airing more than two weeks in a row before each hiatus. Star David Boreanaz is fighting for CBS to order up Season 5, and the fanbase is behind him, but it's not entirely clear what will happen.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (NBC)

Much like one of the musical numbers in Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist can go from one extreme to the next, Jane Levy's tuneful NBC dramedy started off Season 2 with a series-high viewership of 3.01 million viewers, and the numbers stayed above 2 million up through its midseason finale in February. After that, though, Zoey's has bounced from 1.18 million to 1.43 million viewers upon shifting to Sunday-night airings, and those numbers are not the kind that one displays optimistically while walking into renewal conversations.

The Goldbergs - ABC (Update: Renewed On 5/14)

For eight seasons now, The Goldbergs has given audiences a plethora of 1980s-soaked storylines, parodies, references and more, and while there are no doubt fans who would love to see the show make it through the '90s and beyond, that likely won't happen, considering the younger generation of actors can't exactly stop time. And they can't exactly force audiences to be as big as they were in the earlier seasons, either, with the current season marking the first time The Goldbergs averaged below a 1.0 demo rating for live airings. With the viewership regularly falling below 4 million per episode, ABC may decide to find another series to anchor its Wednesday night lineup.

9-1-1: Lone Star (Fox)

It's hard to deny the power of an ensemble cast led by the likes of Rob Lowe and Gina Torres, and 9-1-1: Lone Star continues to complement its star power with wild action sequences. For the most part, fans are continuing to tune in, with Season 2 earning slightly fewer viewer on average (at least when not counting the post-NFL series premiere's heightened stats). While it's true 9-1-1: Lone Star did hit series lows in both total viewership and the 18-49 demo, it's still beating out most non-Fox programming on Monday evenings, save for The Voice, so probably expect to hear some renewal news soon.

Grey's Anatomy - ABC (Update: Renewed On 5/10)

On the one hand, it feel ludicrous to suspect that ABC might not renew Grey's Anatomy, considering it's been renewed for 16 seasons already. But on the other hand, this seasons' Meredith-with-COVID storyline has allowed showrunner Krista Vernoff to bring back a bunch of long-absent stars for cameos, including Patrick Dempsey, which absolutely feels like a final-season move by the creative team. While it remains a ratings winner on Thursday nights, Grey's Anatomy may indeed inspire a more amicable cancellation unless Ellen Pompeo & Co. agree that it makes sense to come back for more.

Manifest (NBC)

Most network dramas that get tagged with being called "the next Lost" tend to crash and burn rather quickly, but Manifest has delivered three seasons of callings-centric mysteries so far. While its live ratings aren't what they were in Season 1, and it gets regularly topped by the two Law & Order spinoffs that follow, Manifest puts forth remarkably consistent ratings at times, maintaining a core viewership that does occasionally over-deliver. So unless it's extremely expensive to produce, or unless stars Melissa Roxburgh, Athena Karkanis, and Josh Dallas decide to all leave after the Season 3 finale, I'm guessing NBC will non-mysteriously renew the supernaturally tinged drama for Season 4.

Good Girls (NBC)

As much as I could watch Retta, Mae Whitman and Christina Hendricks winning at life on Good Girls until everyone gets thrown in jail, I'm hesitant to think that NBC will continue renewing the Sunday night drama. It's hard to deny Good Girls' statistical consistency, but when it's only reaching 1.5 million people, it's also hard to fully celebrate that consistency. Still, I guess it is beating out Fox's animated fare, as well as The CW's lineup, and its own lead-in show Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. (Eesh.) So while I'm not expecting a big renewal to be imminent, I'm hoping for it all the same.

A Million Little Things - ABC (Update: Renewed On 5/14)

If emotional baggage added physical weight to something, ABC's A Million Little Things would likely weigh a million little pounds, and while that kept viewers hooked for the ride through the first two seasons, Season 3 is facing some growing pains with audience numbers. Five of its last seven episodes dipped below the 3-million-viewers mark, with the episode "Redefine" clocking a series-low 0.3 demo rating. It'd be easier to be confident about Season 4's chances if A Million Little Things was a critical darling for ABC, but since that's not really applicable here, the remainder of the season probably needs to crush harder than ever to convince the network to renew.

Prodigal Son - Fox (Update: Cancelled On 5/10)

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (played backwards while chanting weird shit), Prodigal Son has faced something of a reverse trend in Season 2. Whereas no Season 1 episodes dipped below 3 million live viewers, no Season 2 episode has brought in more than 2.5 million viewers on Tuesday nights. (Plus, Prodigal Son only hit a 1.0 demo rating with its first two episodes before that dipped.) However, the Tom Payne and Michael Sheen crime drama does have a vocal fanbase, and they tend to help the show double its initial numbers when DVR stats are tallied.

All Rise - CBS (Update: Cancelled On 5/15)

While CBS execs usually tend to announce their drama and comedy renewals in bulk, this year has understandably been slightly different. Still, though, one would have expected the network to have made a decision by now for Simone Missick's courtroom drama All Rise, whose first season was among the most-watched new shows of the year. Similar to how it's gone for other shows listed here, All Rise's current season appears unable to reach the lowest viewership of the previous season, and that viewership dipped to new lows in April 2021. Perhaps it would fare better away from Monday nights in the future, but CBS will have to renew it for Season in order to test that out.

Call Me Kat (Fox)

As the first big TV follow-up for The Big Bang Theory star Mayim Bialik, Fox's ensemble-led multi-cam sitcom Call Me Kat wasn't a complete departure for the actress. Unfortunately, the promising premiere numbers quickly dipped, and even with DVR numbers added to the mix, Call Me Kat regularly failed to reach the benchmark 1.0 demo rating that usually serves as a renewal/cancellation litmus test these days. Of course, with Last Man Standing ending with Season 9, cancelling Call Me Kat would leave Fox with only The Moodys in terms of live-action comedies. If the network soon announces 3 new non-animated projects going into development, it's probably bad news for Bialik, unless one of them is a Blossom revival.

Station 19 - ABC (Update: Renewed On 5/10)

Similarly to the crossover-friendly Grey's Anatomy, Station 19 is one of the biggest scripted shows ABC has going for it, though it obviously has a ways to go before catching up with the medical drama in terms of seasons. By and large, Station 19 is consistent with viewership stats, though Season 4 has seen dips in the key demo that delayed-viewing tallies can only help so much. Still, there are pretty much zero reasons to think ABC will set fire to Station 19 with a cancellation.

Hopefully audiences won't have to wait too long before hearing updates from all the applicable networks mentioned above, and hopefully all the good news we're looking for will be part of that news. Oh, and that the shows that do end up getting cancelled aren't immediately replaced by cheap and awful substitutions.

While The Conners delivered a pretty shocking fictional death to fans this week, The Goldbergs cast and crew are continuing to mourn the real-world loss of co-star and acting icon George Segal. The Just Shoot Me and Look Who's Talking vet passed away recently at the age of 87, leaving behind a laundry list of enjoyable film and TV performances. It's disappointing that he won't be around to add to The Goldbergs' '80s-fueled madness, but the ABC comedy thankfully put together a very sweet and touching tribute video to remind us all of the good times.

The April 7 episode of The Goldbergs, titled "Couple Off," is reportedly the final episode that George Segal was able to film. Thus, it was the perfect time to break out a clip-filled tribute video honoring Segal's work as the long-running show's kooky patriarch. Check it out below!

George Segal died on March 23 as the result of complications experienced after bypass surgery. The loss was mourned by many in Hollywood, especially from those who worked with him closely over the years. Segal appeared to maintain his bright-eyed and bushy-tailed presence on every set he worked on, and it'll take some adjustments to get used to The Goldbergs without Pops Solomon around anymore.

After such a lengthy career that started off back in the 1960s, George Segal largely left the acting world behind. Save for his regular duties as The Goldberg's Pops, Segal doesn't have any upcoming roles for fans to look forward to in the same way many other actors do whey they face untimely deaths. Beyond The Goldbergs, George Segal most recently appeared on The Simpsons. lending his voice for the 2018 season's "Heartbreak Hotel."

At least we almost definitely don't need to worry about seeing anyone attempting to fill the role down the line, considering I don't think anyone working on the show would even want a replacement. No one compares to Segal, although I would admittedly be amusingly interested in seeing Jeff Garlin going through a lengthy makeup routine that turns him into Pops, at least in spirit...for one episode.

In a coincidental bit of unfortunate TV timing, George Segal passed away exactly one day ahead of Arrested Development's Jessica Walter, with whom he'd co-starred in TVLine's Retired at 35. It seems like they would be a pretty awesome duo to follow around in the afterlife.

Wendi McLendon-Covey (Beverly Goldberg)

In the role of Beverly Goldberg, the family's overprotective matriarch, Wendi McLendon-Covey gives an award-nominated performance in ABC's The Goldbergs. Outside of this network series, McLendon-Covey is known for her role as Deputy Clementine Johnson in Comedy Central's Reno 911!, which was briefly revived by Quibi last year. She also played this character in the film continuation, Reno 911!: Miami. Some of her other notable credits include Bridesmaids, Rules of Engagement, What to Expect When You're Expecting, Bewitched, Think Like a Man Too, Hello My Name Is Doris, What Men Want, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, The Single Moms Club, and Blended. McLendon-Covey also starred in Cook Off!, which she co-wrote. Additionally, the actress led 2019's indie drama, Blush.

Recently, Wendi McLendon-Covey was seen in Sylvie's Love, Breaking for Whales, Long Weekend, and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. Furthermore, as a voice actress, McLendon-Covey can be heard in Big City Greens, Puppy Dog Pals, Crossing Swords, Bob's Burgers, and Solar Opposites. Sean Giambrone (Adam Goldberg)

Playing the part of Adam Goldberg, the pop culture-obsessed youngest child, Sean Giambrone has an autobiographical character — or, at least, semi-autobiographical — in Adam Goldberg's ABC sitcom, The Goldbergs. Away from this series, Giambrone starred in Disney Channel's live-action Kim Possible. He also lent his voice to The Emoji Movie, The Secret Life of Pets 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Clarence, Harley Quinn, Big Hero 6: The Series, and Adventure Time. Currently, Giambrone can also be heard in main roles in Hulu's Solar Opposites and Netflix's Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous.

Troy Gentile (Barry Goldberg)

As Barry Goldberg, the overconfident (and not always bright) middle child, Troy Gentile plays a goofy character in The Goldbergs. Outside of this series, Gentile's other notable TV credits include Entourage, Hawthrone, The Middle, Schooled, and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Additionally, he can also be seen in films like Hotel for Dogs, Nacho Libre, Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny, Bad News Bears (2005), Good Luck Chuck, Pineapple Express, Drillbit Taylor, and I Could Never Be Your Woman.

Hayley Orrantia (Erica Goldberg)

In the role of Erica Goldberg, the sarcastic eldest child, Hayley Orrantia plays a rebellious personality in ABC's The Goldbergs. Outside of acting, Orrantia is a member of the country-pop girl group, Lakoda Rayne, which was assembled by Paula Abdul during The X Factor's first season. She also released her first EP, The Way Out, in 2019. Away from music, Orrantia is the star of God's Not Dead 2. George Segal (Albert “Pops” Solomon)

Playing the part of Albert "Pops" Solomon, Beverly's laid-back, widowed father, George Segal provided a fun-loving, adventure-seeking paternal figure in ABC's The Goldbergs. Unfortunately, in March 2021, the actor passed away at 87. Outside of this series, Segal was an Oscar-nominated actor for his acclaimed performance in Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf? He also starred in NBC's Just Shoot Me!

George Segal's other notable film credits include Ship of Fools, King Rat, The St. Valentine's Day Massacre, Where's Poppa?, The Hot Rock, Blume in Love, A Touch of Class, California Split, For the Boys, Flirting with Disaster, Fun with Dick and Jane (1977), Look Who's Talking, The Cable Guy, The Mirror Has Two Faces, 2012, and Love & Other Drugs. Additionally, as a voice actor, Segal can be heard in The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest. He was also a series regular on Retired at 35. Furthermore, outside of acting, Segal was an accomplished banjo player, having released three albums.

AJ Michalka (Lainey Lewis)

As Lainey Lewis, one of the most popular girls at school and Erica's best friend, AJ Michalka is a prominent supporting character in The Goldbergs. Away from this series, Michalka is best known for being one half of the musical duo, Aly & AJ, alongside her sister, Aly Michalka. She also starred in ABC's spin-off series, Schooled, where she reprised her role as Lainey. She also voices a lead character in Netflix's She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.

AJ Michalka's other notable television credits include Oliver Beene, The Guardian, Six Feet Under, General Hospital, Hellcats, and Silicon Valley. As a voice artist, Michalka can also be heard in Steven Universe. In film, additionally, the actress appears in Super 8, Secretariat, Grace Unplugged, Angels in Stardust, The Lovely Bones, Weepah Way for Now (which she also produced), and Support the Girls.

Sam Lerner (Geoff “Madman” Schwartz)

In the role of Geoff Schwartz, i.e. "Madman," one of Barry's best friends, Sam Lerner was a recurring character on ABC's The Goldbergs, starting in Season 2, before he became part of the main cast in Season 5. Outside of this series, Lerner is known for his work in Monster House, Project Almanac, and Envy. He was also seen in Truth or Dare, Nobody Walks, and Fun Mom Dinner. On television, meanwhile, the actor played a recurring role in Suburgatory. Also, Lerner can be seen in the fifth season of Ballers. Next, he'll appear in F9. Also, Lerner will star in Liked, and the short film, Purity.

Patton Oswalt (Adult Adam Goldberg)

Providing the voice of an adult version of Adam Goldberg, who narrates this nostalgic show, Patton Oswalt can often be heard in The Goldbergs. An Emmy-winning stand-up comedian, Oswalt has continued to branch out as an actor — particularly as a voice actor — over the past two decades, notably with his starring role in Ratatouille. The comic can also be heard in Kim Possible, BoJack Horseman, We Bare Bears, Archer, Justice League Action, Mickey and the Roadster Racers, Big Hero 6: The Series, Spider-Man, The Secret Life of Pets 2, and Happy! Additionally, he'll voice the main character in the upcoming M.O.D.O.K., where he will also contribute as a writer.

Additionally, Patton Oswalt plays a lead role in NBC/Peacock's A.P. Bio. He also had prominent roles in The King of Queens, Justified, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Oswalt's other notable television credits include Community, Parks and Recreation, Reno 911!, Drunk History, Two and a Half Men, Veep, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Netflix's Mystery Science Theater 3000. Additionally, in film, Oswalt starred in Big Fan and Young Adult.

Judd Hirsch (Ben “Pop Pop” Goldberg)

Playing the part of Ben "Pop Pop" Goldberg, Murray's cranky and opinionated father, Judd Hirsch has a spirited supporting character in ABC's The Goldbergs. Away from this series, Hirsch is a two-time Emmy-winning actor, as well as a two-time Tony-winning actor, who's best known for his work in NBC's Taxi. He also starred in NBC's Dear John and CBS's Numb3rs. His other notable film and television credits include Ordinary People, Running on Empty, Independence Day, Independence Day: Resurgence, A Beautiful Mind, This Must Be The Place, Tower Heist, Teachers, Without a Trace, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Collected), Delvecchio, George and Leo, Damages, Forever, Maron, Uncut Gems, and Superior Donuts.

Dan Fogler (Marvin Goldberg)

As Marvin Goldberg, Murray's carefree and often unreliable younger brother, Dan Fogler plays a fun-loving supporting character in ABC's The Goldbergs. Making his Broadway debut in 2005's The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, for which he won a Tony Award, Fogler starred in Balls of Fury. He also appears in Good Luck Chuck, Fanboys, School for Scoundrels, Take Me Home Tonight, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Sharknado 5: Global Swarming, and Taking Woodstock. Additionally, Fogler lent his voice to Mars Needs Moms, Kung Fu Panda, Horton Hears a Who!, and Free Birds.

Furthermore, Dan Fogler headlined Don Peyote, which he co-wrote and co-directed, and he played prominent roles in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and its sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crime of Grindelwald. On television, additionally, Fogler stars in AMC's The Walking Dead. He also appears in Hannibal, Man Up!, The Good Wife, and Secrets and Lies. Most recently, the actor starred in The Argument. Next, Fogler will be seen in Making the Day, Spinning Gold, and the third Fantastic Beasts movie.

Hollywood lost a legend yesterday in the form of George Segal, as the veteran actor of TV and film died at the age of 87. The actor sadly passed away due to complications from bypass surgery. Segal amassed quite a following over the years and was admired by so many of his peers. With this, various stars like Ben Stiller and David Spade are now paying tribute to him after his passing.

Like many others, Ben Stiller grew up watching and enjoying George Segal’s work. In a sweet Twitter post, Stiller reflected on Segal’s legacy and named his favorite of the late actor’s films:

David Spade had the privilege of working closely with George Segal for a number of years. For seven seasons, the two were co-stars on the NBC sitcom Just Shoot Me!. The two were frequent scene partners, as Spade’s Dennis Finch was (intensely) loyal to Segal’s Jack Gallo. After hearing of his former co-star’s passing, Spade posted a sweet photo with a brief caption:

The legendary Morgan Fairchild also had the opportunity to work with George Segal on more than one occasion. Taking to social media, she posted a throwback photo from their time working on The Zany Adventures of Robin Hood:

Although George Segal was a jack of all trades when it came to his abilities as an actor, many knew him for his comedic prowess. The entertainment industry lost a star of both television and film with the death of George Segal, known for appearances on multiple hit TV comedies as well as a movie performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination, among others. He was 87-years-old at the time of his passing on the morning of March 23.

George Segal's wife Sonia confirmed the news of her husband's death in a statement (via Deadline), saying that he died "due to complications from bypass surgery." Born in Great Neck, New York on February 13, 1934, Segal is best known in recent years for his role as Pops on ABC's The Goldbergs, starting in 2013 and which has run for eight seasons and more than 175 episodes so far.

The Goldbergs wasn't George Segal's first or only long-running sitcom role. He played Jack Gallo for the seven seasons of Just Shoot Me from 1997-2003, and was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actor in two consecutive years for Just Shoot Me. Segal also appeared in series ranging from Murphy's Law to The Larry Sanders Show to Retired at 35, to name just a few of many large and small.

That said, George Segal wasn't just known for his work on the small screen, and he accumulated some major awards attention over the years for his films. In 1967, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor following his performance in the film adaptation of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. He was also nominated for the Golden Globes on the film front on three separate occasions, winning for New Star of the Year for The New Interns in 1965 and Best Actor for A Touch of Class in 1974.

Between his film and television roles, George Segal proved that he could tackle both dramatic and comedic roles to great success, with The Goldbergs keeping him on the air for the better part of a decade. The Goldbergs will air the final episode featuring Segal as Pops on April 7, and will presumably include a tribute to the actor and his character.

Adam Goldberg, who created The Goldbergs, shared a message of tribute for George Segal on social media following news of his passing:

Adam Goldberg chose a selection of images of George Segal in his Twitter tribute, including from the iconic Goldbergs episode that saw Pops and his grandson dress up like different versions of Batman. Goldberg also included a screenshot of an exchange that he had with Segal, in which Segal pitched a "Who's on first?" routine on the show, because he just loved the show. Adam Goldberg is also not the only member of the Goldbergs team to already express sadness at Segal's death. Patton Oswalt, who narrates the ABC comedy, posted on Twitter:

Primetime is filling up with TV options once again now that the winter breaks are ending, and the latest Wednesday night ratings indicate that viewers were all about the One Chicago action, but not so much in the mood to laugh on January 27. NBC's primetime block of Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. returned from a brief break to big ratings, while ABC's comedies took an unfortunate tumble. Here's where things stand now that the numbers are in for Wednesday night.

The three One Chicago dramas were off for an extra week beyond the original plan from NBC, but that didn't stop plenty of people from tuning in to watch Med, Fire, and P.D. In Live+Same day numbers from the key 18-49 age demographic, Deadline reports that Chicago Med won the whole night of January 27 with an audience of 7.07 million at 8 p.m. ET, followed by Chicago Fire at 9 p.m. ET with 6.8 million and Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. ET with 5.86 million. Despite the differences in audience size, all three Chicago dramas were even in the ratings, each scoring an 0.9.

To compare, ABC's two-hour comedy block comprised of The Goldbergs, American Housewife, The Conners, and freshman series Call Your Mother weren't at the top in any category. The Goldbergs hit series lows with 3.3 million viewers and an 0.5 rating at 8 p.m., and the numbers weren't any better for American Housewife at 8:30 p.m. with 2.77 million and an 0.4. The Conners gave ABC a bit of a boost at 9 p.m. with 3.44 million and a rating of 0.5, although those numbers were still a drop from the week before. Call Your Mother at 9:30 p.m. only had an audience of 2.51 million and rating of 0.4, but that show did at least remain steady from week to week.

In all fairness, however, ABC isn't exactly the only network that lost big to NBC with One Chicago. No other show that aired during primetime on Wednesday, January 27 got closer to Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. with their 0.9 rating than CBS with the primetime edition of The Price Is Right, and even that only hit an 0.7. When it comes to viewership, even P.D. as the Chicago series with the smallest audience size beat all the competition on the other networks. The closest competition was also The Price Is Right on CBS with 4.79 million. But hey, every broadcast beat Nancy Drew on The CW at 9 p.m. with its 0.1 and 420,000 viewers!

It is worth noting that One Chicago easily dominating Wednesday might be a different story if the lineup in winter 2021 was the same as previous years, when The Masked Singer and Survivor would be in the mix as well. The Masked Dancer, which currently fills The Masked Singer's Wednesday slot on Fox, hasn't won nearly the same kind of audience size as the singing series, and the future of CBS' Survivor is very much uncertain due to the complications of production during a pandemic. For the time being, unless something major changes, there may not be much on Wednesday night to pose a threat to One Chicago, as it seems clear from January 27 that the ABC comedy block won't unseat Med, Fire, and P.D.

Still, it's possible that the numbers will shift somewhat once delayed viewing can be tallied to account for those who checked out these shows but didn't watch live. That's not to say that any of the non-NBC shows will rise to the kinds of numbers to beat One Chicago, though. In fact, the Wednesday night show with a history of huge gains from delayed viewing is actually one of the Chicago shows, with P.D. historically beating Med and Fire in delayed viewing. As for ABC and the comedies, those certainly aren't terrible numbers, and they might be flukes after they were all off for a week due to inauguration coverage. Only time will tell.

The fall TV premiere season is off to a much slower start than usual due to the same production complications that ended the 2019-2020 season early for many shows, but ABC has some good news for viewers in need of some laughs. The Conners finally has a premiere date for its third season, and it's not the only comedy that returned to production in time for a fall premiere.

Joining The Conners in ABC's fall 2020 lineup are The Goldbergs Season 8, black-ish Season 7, and American Housewife Season 5. The Goldbergs, The Conners, and black-ish will all debut their new seasons on Wednesday, October 21, with The Goldbergs launching its eighth season with two back-to-back episodes. American Housewife will join the comedy lineup a week later, on October 28. Here's what to expect on ABC Wednesdays, starting October 28:

This marks a change from ABC's Wednesday night lineup to start the 2019 fall season. Last year, The Conners and black-ish aired on Wednesdays along with Bless This Mess and mixed-ish. Although mixed-ish somewhat surprisingly didn't get cancelled after its first season, Bless This Mess wasn't so lucky after ending its second.

The 10 p.m. ET hour last season was occupied by Emergence, but that drama was also cancelled. ABC has not announced just yet what will follow the two hours of comedy in the 2020 fall season. black-ish (which is getting yet another spinoff) is also returning ahead of its official Season 7 premiere date with back-to-back special election episodes on October 4.

These premiere dates put ABC on the calendar with some of its highest-profile scripted series, although reality competition shows are returning earlier, with Dancing with the Stars (complete with Tiger King's Carole Baskin) premiering on September 14, Celebrity Family Feud on September 24, and The Bachelorette Season 16 (reportedly featuring not one but two women looking for love) in mid-October. ABC's returning dramas are noticeably absent from the lineup so far.

With powerhouse scripted dramas like Grey's Anatomy, Station 19, and The Good Doctor renewed for the 2020-2021 season, among others, fans will undoubtedly be anxiously awaiting more news from ABC. The returning ABC comedies mean that ABC beats NBC when it comes to returning comedy premieres, as Superstore Season 6 will premiere on October 22. CBS is not yet on the map with its comedies, including the hit Young Sheldon. Fox will bring back its animated comedy block on September 27, which technically makes it the first network to bring comedy back to primetime.

There are still a lot of blanks when it comes to the fall lineup, however. NBC has packed its biggest drama premieres, including This Is Us and all three One Chicago series, into November, and CBS is expected to premiere NCIS and other shows in November as well. ABC's dramas are very much up in the air, although Grey's Anatomy has started production. The Goldbergs introduced Kelli Berglund’s Ren in Season 7. The character appeared in just five episodes, but she was established as Erica’s friend at the University of Philadelphia and quickly went on to become Barry’s love interest on the ABC sitcom. Though Berglund was all set up to return for The Goldbergs Season 8, the role had to be recast, for better or worse, with another actress getting cast to play the role of Ren moving forward.

Carrie Wampler (Big Little Lies) will be joining the cast of The Goldbergs in Season 8 in order to replace Kelli Berglund as Ren. According to Deadline, Berglund is now having to drop the sitcom role due to another major work commitment. The actress was also previously cast for a leading role in the upcoming Starz wrestling drama Heels, where she will be playing the character Crystal opposite Arrow’s Stephen Amell. While the production-schedule timing might have worked out in her favor when Berglund first agreed to the dual roles, COVID obviously knocked things for a loop, thus making it impossible for her to continue on with The Goldbergs.

Prior to landing The Goldbergs, Carrie Wampler played Lori in two episodes of HBO’s Big Little Lies and has appeared in numerous other shows, including Parks and Recreation, Tales of Titans, 9-1-1, and more. However, Wampler is perhaps most famous for playing Brooke in Disney Channel’s Austin & Ally.

Carrie Wampler has some sizable shoes to fill on The Goldbergs, and I’m sure a lot of pressure comes with assuming the role that another actor originated. That said, I think Wampler will do a great job as Ren. Considering that Kelli Berglund only appeared in a handful of episodes last season, I’d wager that the audience hadn’t gotten so wildly attached to Berglund’s portrayal of Ren that they won't stand for a switcheroo. And hey, it’s Hollywood, where recastings are par for the course at this point.

In the case of The Goldbergs, it's certainly not the first time the show has undergone a recast. Girl Meets World’s Rowan Blanchard played Jackie Geary, Adam Goldberg’s love interest, for 11 episodes throughout Season 4 and Season 5, but was later replaced by Alexis G. Zall in the role for Season 6. Blanchard went on to appear in Splitting Up Together and TNT’s Snowpiercer. Not to mention showrunner Adam F. Goldberg stepping down and being replaced by Chris Bishop & Alex Barnow.

Recasting any role can be tricky because audience members do (obviously) notice that it’s not the same actor in the role. However, that hasn’t prevented even the most popular shows, including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Game of Thrones, from recasting characters for one reason or another – whether it's behind-the-scenes issues, scheduling conflicts, etc. - and carrying on like nothing’s happened. The show must go on and all that jazz! Or if not jazz, then synthy '80s pop.

Within the last few years, Hollywood has taken major steps in addressing sexual assault, with companies taking any potential allegations seriously. This has definitely applied to recent situations in which high-profile celebrities have been accused. Now, Bryan Callen, who plays Coach Mellor on ABC’s The Goldbergs has been accused of sexual assault and misconduct by multiple women.

In a lengthy story from The Los Angeles Times, four women accused Bryan Callen of sexual assault and misconduct incidents that span multiple decades. In the piece, former actress Katherine Fiore Tigerman alleged that Callen raped her during a 1999 encounter. In a statement to the trade, Callen formally denied the allegations, calling their encounter consensual.

Katherine Fiore Tigerman explained that she originally met Bryan Callen in 1994, before Callen was an established actor. By 1999, Tigerman was 23 years old and had moved to Los Angeles. It was during this time that she reunited with Callen, leading to the two becoming friends. Tigerman alleges that during one date, the two went to dinner alone at a restaurant where she began to feel ill. She says the two then planned to attend a movie and stopped at Callen’s house to check the newspaper for showtimes.

Tigerman, who says she was still feeling unwell, went to the bathroom and alleges that Callen was immediately outside the doorway when she left the restroom. Soon after, the two were in Callen’s bedroom where Callen allegedly pushed her onto his mattress and proceeded to have sex with her while Tigerman was reportedly pleading for him to stop. Callen would later drive her back home, and she would call her then-boyfriend, Rino Romano, about the incident.

Other incidents reported within the story include a 2009 incident in which Callen allegedly forced himself on a department store employee in a fitting room and began to kiss her against her will. Claire Ganshert, an aspiring actress, claimed to have had a four-year with Callen, during which she felt “devalued and demoralized.” She also alleges that Callen said women have a “biological, primal desire to be raped.”

Comedian Tiffany King also claimed that Callen attempted to solicit sex from her for stage time and money. Other individuals have corroborated the stories of each of the women and have recalled hearing of the incidents in the past.

The allegations against Callen also come shortly after his friend and fellow comedian Chris D’Elia was accused of misconduct. Callen defended D’Elia during the situation.

Bryan Callen has adamantly denied all of the claims and, in his statement to The Times, he asserts that he has never raped or forced himself on anyone and says he will not allow cancel culture to “subvert” what he knows to be the truth:

Callen, whose credits also include Madtv and The Hangover, has starred on The Goldbergs for each of its seven seasons and also appeared as a main cast member on the short-lived spinoff, Schooled. As of right now, Callen is not set to return for the show’s upcoming eighth season.

Network television around this time of year would normally be hurtling toward a finale season packed with cliffhangers, nail-biters, and every kind of huge event designed to hook viewers to return in the fall. This year, however, the coronavirus pandemic has stopped the production of a shocking number of network shows, ranging from small CW series to some of the biggest shared universes on the small screen. Some have scrapped the rest of the spring season altogether.

Certain networks were hit harder by the coronavirus than others, with CBS beating The CW in terms of sheer number of shows that have halted production, but NBC, ABC, and Fox all have their fair share. Keep on scrolling for a rundown of the major network TV shows that have been delayed or are even ending early due to the coronavirus.

American Idol/ABC

The ABC revival of American Idol hit the small screen in 2020 with some solid numbers for its pre-taped episodes, but those episodes will run out sooner rather than later. The live episodes were set to begin on March 30 in Los Angeles, and production has been suspended. Considering California Governor Gavin Newsom has issued an order to "stay home" that will be in place "until further notice," it's unlikely American Idol will be back for its live episodes as scheduled. Idol has found a way to air more new episodes showcasing the Top 20 contestants to last through mid-April, but beyond that is currently unknown

Arrow-verse/The CW

Although the Arrow-verse lost Arrow in the 2019-2020 TV season, it's still going strong with The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Batwoman, and post-"Crisis on Infinite Earths" Black Lightning. The good news is that Black Lightning Season 3 has already aired its finale and Legends of Tomorrow finished production on Season 5, but Flash, Supergirl, and Batwoman are facing delays.

Yes, TVLine reports that Batwoman managed to finish 19 of the 22 episodes ordered for Season 1 and is likely finished with a shortened season, and Supergirl Season 5 completed 21 of 22, and no decision has seemingly been made at this point about cancelling the rest of their seasons. The Flash has enough episodes to last through May 19, according to Variety, and it will then go into a hiatus with the possibility of finishing Season 6 as intended later in 2020.

All the Arrow-verse shows were renewed for next season, and The CW has announced when they'll return from their unexpected spring break. The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow will be back on April 21 at 8 p.m. ET and 9 p.m. ET, respectively. As for Batwoman and Supergirl, both will return on April 26, at 8 p.m. ET and 9 p.m. ET respectively.

All Rise/CBS

The legal drama All Rise starring Simone Missick launched back in September 2019, but it's likely that it won't get to finish as originally planned. Production has stopped, and a shortened season is expected. The good news is that All Rise had nearly completed its season before coronavirus forced the halt, and CBS has shown support for the show throughout its first season.

Bob Hearts Abishola/CBS

Bob Hearts Abishola has been a solid freshman comedy for CBS, to the point that it wouldn't be surprising for CBS to announce a renewal even without a full first season. The Chuck Lorre sitcom made it most of the way through its season before production halted, and it's expected the season will end early rather than resume.

The Blacklist/NBC

The Blacklist, which made its return to the airwaves for the second half of Season 7 pretty late in the midseason lineup, completed 18 of its 22 episodes before production stopped. A shortened season is likely. Fortunately, the James Spader-led series will bring back its mysteries and intrigue in Season 8.

Bull/CBS

Michael Weatherly's Bull, which some doubted would return at all for Season 4 due to allegations against the star, almost completed the 22 episodes ordered for this season. Bull is likely to end on a shortened season. Given that Bull films in New York City and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo just ordered that 100% of "non-essential work forces" stay home, according to NBC New York, production may not have been able to begin again any time soon anyway.

Charmed/The CW

The CW's Charmed reboot managed to finish 20 of its ordered 22 episodes of Season 2, and no decision has been announced as to whether the season will resume filming or if it will end early. The show has already been renewed for Season 3, so the end isn't nigh even if Season 2 is cut by a couple episodes.

One Chicago/NBC

One Chicago has been going strong in the 2019-2020 TV season with Chicago Fire Season 8, Chicago P.D. Season 7, and Chicago Med Season 5, and all three shows scored huge renewals. Unfortunately, Deadline reports that the coronavirus delays resulted in all three series having their current seasons cut short of the 23-episode order.

Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas took to Twitter to confirm that Fire is done until next season, with 20 episodes completed. With Med and P.D. following the same schedule of releases as Fire, then those seasons are expected to end at 20 as well. The season finales of all three shows air on Wednesday, April 15, with Med at 8 p.m. ET, Fire at 9 p.m. ET, and P.D. at 10 p.m. ET.

Chicago P.D.'s Tracy Spiridakos shared with CinemaBlend that she will not appear in the final two completed episodes of Season 7 due to her crossover to CBS' FBI, but is returning for P.D. Season 8.

Dynasty/The CW

Dynasty's third season on The CW has been as dramatic as could be expected, but it too is facing delays due to coronavirus. Out of the order for 22 episodes, only 20 have been completed. Still, production has not been officially cancelled for the season, so it's possible the goal is to finish Dynasty's season as planned. Season 4 has already been ordered.

Empire/Fox

Empire managed to complete 18 of its 20 episodes for the sixth season, and the coronavirus complications are more significant for Empire than most. The Fox series was set to end for good after those last two episodes, with no seventh season forthcoming to tie off loose ends. Sadly, Empire is slated to end after its 18th episode, with some added footage from Episode 19, which was filming at the time of the production shutdown.

The series finale will air April 21 on Fox. Thanks to the flash-forwards, it's possible that Empire may be able to patch together a lot of what it wanted to accomplish, but this is still a bummer for fans.

FBI And FBI: Most Wanted/CBS

FBI and freshman spinoff FBI: Most Wanted suspended production, and they both film in New York City. What turned out to be FBI's Season 2 finale aired on March 31, with Chicago P.D.'s Tracy Spiridakos appearing as Hailey Upton to join the CBS Dick Wolf shows with the NBC Dick Wolf shows. The episode arguably proved why FBI deserves a third season; lacking the same mega-renewal that the NBC Wolf shows received, FBI's future is currently uncertain.

With FBI: Most Wanted also nearing the end of its season when production halted, all signs point toward the show ending short of its original episode order. At the time of writing, only one more new episode of Most Wanted is scheduled, releasing on April 14 at 10 p.m. ET. Like FBI, Most Wanted has not yet been renewed, so fans will have to wait for good or bad news regarding the spinoff's future.

God Friended Me/CBS

There was no divine intervention to allow God Friended Me to finish its current second season without a coronavirus delay. That said, Season 2 was reportedly close to conclusion, and God Friended Me is expected to wrap short of the original order. God Friended Me has not yet been renewed for Season 3.

The Goldbergs/ABC

Season 7 of The Goldbergs was nearing completion when production was halted. The remainder of the season has not been cancelled at this point, but fans may want to prepare for an incomplete batch of episodes. The Goldbergs has not yet been renewed for another season, and Wendi McLendon-Covey is on board the Reno 911! revival.

The Good Fight/CBS All Access

Season 4 of The Good Fight doesn't actually premiere until April 9, but the CBS All Access series may only stream part of the season. 8 of the ordered 10 episodes were completed by the time production came to an halt due to the coronavirus. No announcement has been made about whether Season 4 will pick up again or The Good Fight will simply end Season 4 at 8 episodes.

Grey's Anatomy/ABC

Grey's Anatomy made it all the way through Episode 21 before production stopped on Season 16, which would be nearly a full season for most broadcast network primetime series. Grey's received an order for 25 episodes in Season 16, however, and EW reports the show will scrap the remaining four and officially end the season with Episode 21 on April 9. Grey's Anatomy has already been renewed for Season 17, though.

Last Man Standing/Fox

Last Man Striving has been thriving since its move to Fox, but it too is facing a disrupted season. 21 of the 22 ordered episodes were completed, and how the rest of Season 8 will be handled has not yet been determined. It's possible Last Man Standing would want to finish since the season is so close to the end and it could presumably film on a stage without anything on location, but only one episode short wouldn't be such a bad thing. Last Man Standing has not been renewed.

Law & Order: SVU/NBC

Like its fellow Dick Wolf NBC shows, Law & Order: SVU is likely done for the 2019-2020 TV season. SVU showrunner Warren Leight took to Twitter to share that Episode 20 of Season 21 may be the Season 21 finale. Also like Dick Wolf's One Chicago, SVU scored a renewal for three more seasons before production shut down, so the Special Victims Unit will be back investigating sexually-based offenses next season. At least SVU fans can head into the indefinite hiatus knowing Stabler is returning to NBC!

Legacies/The CW

The second season of Vampire Diaries and Originals spinoff Legacies stopped production early. Showrunner Julie Plec has confirmed that the March 26 episode, which was Episode 16 of Season 2, was the last that could be completed and would serve as the spring finale. Like its fellow CW series, Legacies has already been renewed for another season, so more Legacies is still on the way. Legacies does also deliver cliffhangers on almost a weekly basis, so Season 2 managed to end with a bang even if it was a little earlier than anticipated.

MacGyver/CBS

MacGyver didn't even premiere until midseason, and now Season 4 is evidently done for good once it runs out of episodes that were already completed. MacGyver stars Lucas Till and Levy Tran confirmed via social media that the show is "shut down for the season," and it was "too early" and "really abrupt." The show has not been renewed for Season 5 yet, but with Hawaii Five-0 ending, CBS may want to keep another Friday mainstay going for at least another year.

Nancy Drew/The CW

Nancy Drew debuted in fall 2019 as a very CW take on the classic mystery novels revolving around teen detective Nancy Drew. The series received an order for 22 episodes for its freshman season, and Nancy Drew reportedly almost completed that order before production came to a stop. A shortened season is expected.

NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans/CBS

Unlike the shared universes of One Chicago, FBI/FBI: Most Wanted, and Grey's Anatomy/Station 19, the three shows of the NCIS universe are set and film far apart from each other. Still, all three are in the same situation. NCIS Season 17, NCIS: Los Angeles Season 11, and NCIS: New Orleans Season 6 have all stopped production shy of completing the 24-episode order. The seasons are expected to end prematurely rather than return to production. No NCIS series has been renewed yet for 2020-2021.

The Neighborhood/CBS

CBS' The Neighborhood, starring Max Greenfield and Cedric the Entertainer, almost managed to complete its second season. 20 of the 21 episodes were finished, and it's looking like Season 2 will end without resuming production to get that final episode. If The Neighborhood is renewed for Season 3, perhaps the unproduced episode could simply be moved to the fall.

New Amsterdam/NBC

New Amsterdam was reportedly well shy of completing its 22-episode order, with 19 or 20 episodes ready for air when production was shut down. EW now reports that New Amsterdam's Season 2 finale will air April 14, putting it four episodes short of the original order for 22. NBC already decided to pull an episode centered on a flu epidemic, although that episode is intended to air at a later date. Fans of New Amsterdam can rest easy knowing that the network has already renewed the medical drama for a whopping three more seasons.

Prodigal Son/Fox

Prodigal Son received a full first season order from Fox after only two episodes had aired, but that full first season may not actually wrap as intended. Production stopped before the 22 episodes could all be completed. Fox hasn't officially ruled out returning to finish Season 1. Prodigal Son has not been renewed for Season 2 at this point.

The Resident/Fox

The Resident, which recently donated its medical supplies to a real-life hospital in need, had not yet completed all 23 episodes of its third season, although it got close with 20 episodes. The third season will end with Episode 20, called "Burn It All Down," airing April 7. Like Prodigal Son, The Resident has not yet been renewed for the 2020-2021 TV season.

Riverdale/The CW

Riverdale was 20 episodes into its 22-episode order for Season 4 when production was suspended. Riverdale was suspended before other high-profile CW series like The Flash and Supernatural due to a member of the team testing positive for coronavirus, according to Deadline. Fans should expect a shortened fourth season, but also for the renewed Riverdale to return for Season 5.

SEAL Team/CBS

SEAL Team, starring David Boreanaz, apparently came close to finishing its third season, as it was in production on its final two of 22 episodes when the show came to a stop. Despite the partial production on Episodes 21 and 22, a shortened season is looking likely. Episode 20 may well be the Season 3 finale. SEAL Team has been neither cancelled nor renewed for the 2020-2021 TV season.

Supernatural/The CW

Supernatural is another series that was close to completing its very last season before the coronavirus forced production shutdown. The show completed 18 of the 20 ordered episodes, but was only able to air 13 due to incomplete special effects on the remaining five. Showrunner Andrew Dabb has promised that the Supernatural team, The CW, and Warner Bros. "fully intend to return and finish the series," and it's a matter of "when" rather than "if."

Superstore/NBC

Superstore managed to finish 21 of its planned 22 episodes of Season 5, and NBC already renewed the series for Season 6. That said, Superstore star America Ferrera had already announced her departure from the show following the end of the current season. Ferrera took to social media (via TVLine) to hint that she will return "when things clear up to finish Amy’s storyline." Superstore will be back, presumably with Ferrera on board at least one last time.

S.W.A.T./CBS

S.W.A.T., starring Criminal Minds alum Shemar Moore, nearly made it to the end of Season 3, with 21 of 22 episodes completed at the time of production shutdown. The show hasn't been renewed or cancelled for the 2020-2021 TV season at this point, but Season 3 is expected to be shortened and end with Episode 21.

The Voice/NBC

The Voice launched Season 18 with a new coach, but Nick Jonas' first season on the show is likely to be seriously disrupted. Although NBC has some taped shows that can still air, it's improbable that the live shows scheduled for May 4 can still happen. At the very least, live shows that go into production any time soon likely will do so without an in-house audience.

Young Sheldon/CBS

The Big Bang Theory spinoff's third season halted production before the final episode of the 22-episode order could be completed. Young Sheldon Season 3 evidently hasn't officially been shut down, so it's possible CBS is aiming to resume production and finish. Whatever happens for the rest of Season 3, fans can count on the Cooper family returning to the airwaves next season. Young Sheldon was renewed for Seasons 3 and 4 back in February 2019.

The Walking Dead/AMC

Major cable TV shows have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic as well. The Walking Dead made it almost all the way through its tenth season, and filming was actually completed. The bad news is that AMC announced that the show was unable to complete post-production on the Season 10 finale, so the episode will "appear as a special episode later in the year." No information was released about when that might be.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond/AMC

The Walking Dead's latest spinoff finished filming its first season, but that doesn't mean it'll premiere as originally scheduled. AMC had The Walking Dead: World Beyond slated to premiere on April 12, immediately following the Season 10 finale of The Walking Dead. Now the show has been moved back to "later this year." The Walking Dead delay could mean that the Season 10 finale and World Beyond premiere can still be paired, if AMC wants to go in that direction.

Saturday Night Live/NBC

Scripted TV shows aren't the only non-reality series being delayed. Season 45 of Saturday Night Live had to halt production in New York City due to the coronavirus. The latest episode was originally scheduled for March 28, with host John Krasinski and musical guest Dua Lipa. News broke on March 16, however, that SNL was halting for three weeks. If SNL returns on schedule, that would mean new episodes by mid-April, but fans shouldn't count on Season 45 returning any time soon,

Fargo/FX

The fourth season of FX's anthology series stars Chris Rock and was originally slated for an April 19 premiere, but Deadline reports the Fargo season premiere has been pushed back since only 8 of the 10 ordered episodes were completed before the shutdown. FX reportedly hopes that Fargo will still hit the airwaves in 2020.

The Undoing/HBO

Nicole Kidman was set to return to HBO as star of The Undoing, but HBO decided (via The Wrap) that "In light of current events, HBO’s six-part limited series, THE UNDOING, will now debut this fall." The Undoing was seemingly completed and is simply being pushed back, rather than delayed due to unfinished production. The original premiere date was May 10.

I Know This Much Is True/HBO

The double dose of Mark Ruffalo as twin brothers in HBO's I Know This Much Is True has been pushed back, but not by too much. Originally scheduled to debut on April 17, the six-part series will take The Undoing's original premiere date of May 10, according to Variety. Mark Ruffalo is still coming to TV; viewers just have a few more weeks to wait.

The Goldbergs has been going strong for six seasons on ABC, and most of that has been because of creator / executive producer/ showrunner Adam F. Goldberg steering the '80s-set comedy ship. That's about to change though, as word has come down that Goldberg is leaving his showrunner post ahead of Season 7.

Word came down recently that while Adam F. Goldberg will leave showrunning on The Goldbergs behind, he'll be sticking around as executive producer, which should make fans very happy, seeing as how the series is based on his own childhood. According to Deadline, fans will also be happy to know that The Goldbergs seems to be in good hands with new showrunners Alex Barnow and Chris Bishop. Both have been with the show since day one, and they both have deals with Sony Pictures TV, which produces the sitcom.

Speaking of Sony Pictures TV, it's suspected that Adam F. Goldberg leaving his showrunner position is likely due to him leaving the company for an overall deal with ABC Studios, where it's believed that he will focus on development for Disney TV Studios. Alex Barnow and Chris Bishop, meanwhile, each have their own deals with Sony that will take them into 2021.

While finding out that Goldberg is leaving the day to day responsibilities of running the show he created behind him is quite a surprise, it's at least good to know that the series has probably been left in very good hands with Bishop and Barnow. As fans of the long-running family comedy know by now, any old regular showrunner can't just take over The Goldbergs. Oh, no. This show is special, dude.

As I mentioned earlier, The Goldbergs takes place, adorably, in "1980-something" and is based on the experiences that Adam F. Goldberg had growing up as a slightly awkward and nerdy kid obsessed with movies and TV, particularly anything in the fantasy /sci-fi / horror / comedy genres. The TV version of young Adam builds a lot of his life around making fan films and recreating his favorite visual entertainment, usually to hilarious effect.

Because TV Adam (and, for that matter, IRL Adam) find these things so important, The Goldbergs goes to great lengths to not only show off what life in general was like in the 1980s, but to pay homage to some of the bigger pop culture moments that took place in that crazy, Cabbage Patch doll and Back to the Future obsessed decade.

In six seasons, The Goldbergs has celebrated Star Wars Day with a perfectly '80s misunderstanding, had over-protective mom Beverly meet Freddie Krueger, given audiences a Die Hard-themed Christmas episode and crossed over with the movie The Wedding Singer (which came out in the 1990s, but was set, you guessed it, in the '80s). And none of that even covers the spot-on nature of Beverly's hair or crazy ass sweaters and jumpsuits. Basically, if you miss any part of the 1980s, The Goldbergs should be your show.

Seeing as how the new showrunners have been with The Goldbergs from the start, and Adam F. Goldberg is still executive producing, I'm hopeful that the nutty 1980s family shenanigans won't be changing anytime soon.

The Goldbergs has spent its six seasons so far including all kinds of fabulous tributes to the best of the 1980s, ranging from Star Wars in honor of Star Wars Day to Freddy Kreuger in a Halloween episode. Next week's episode will take The Goldbergs in a rom-com direction with a tribute to The Wedding Singer. This time, however, the Goldbergs tribute will involve a crossover that puts the family right in the climax of the beloved Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore film. Take a look at what's to come!

Thanks to the fact that Adam Sandler is on board The Goldbergs as a producer, creator and executive producer Adam F. Goldberg was able to incorporate actual footage from The Wedding Singer into the episode. The footage that Goldberg shared on Twitter shows Barry on an airplane alongside Lainey.

That plane just so happens to also be carrying The Wedding Singer's Robbie Hart (Adam Sandler), Julia Sullivan (Drew Barrymore), Billy Idol (as himself) and more. Who could have guessed that there was some Goldberg family action going down during the romantic climax of The Wedding Singer?

Now, you may be wondering if the Goldbergs episode really will cross over with The Wedding Singer or if this was just a fun promo hyping next week's episode, which airs right before the premiere of the series' spinoff, called Schooled. This wouldn't be the first instance of a show using a pop culture icon for a non-canon teaser.

Fortunately, Adam Goldberg clarified on Twitter that the footage isn't just something thrown together for the purposes of promotion. He confirmed that The Goldbergs and The Wedding Singer both exist in the same universe, as well as why the sitcom characters get on the flight from New Jersey to Las Vegas.

It's a little bit of a bummer that Adam Sandler couldn't appear in the flesh on The Goldbergs, but it does make sense even if Sandler has appeared on a sitcom in recent years. Even the best makeup department on the small screen may not be able to make Sandler look as he did in the late 90s.

Maybe if The Goldbergs ends with the characters flashing forward to present day, Sandler can appear at his current age. Throw in Drew Barrymore, and what better way to end a series? Barrymore has said that she's all about working with Sandler again. We can dream, right?

At this point, we can't say if the episode will feature more of the Goldbergs/Wedding Singer crossover than just the plane scene, but there's not too much longer to wait. The Wedding Singer episode of The Goldbergs will hit the airwaves on Sunday, January 9 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

The Goldbergs is doing something big for its Christmas episode, hoping to get its audience excited ahead of the holidays with the promise of another dose of 80s nostalgia. The ABC comedy intends to do this by paying homage to Die Hard, a film whose distinction as a Christmas movie is more polarizing than Die Hard itself.

The presumably action-packed episode, titled "Yipee Kay-Yay, Melon Farmer," will feature Adam and his uncle Marvin attempting to write and film the perfect rip-off of Die Hard. Uncle Marvin claims to be big in the TV biz, which convinces Adam to help him, and says he will use his Hollywood cred to guarantee their copycat project makes it to theaters. I'm not so convinced.

Adam and Uncle Marvin's version of Die Hard will likely reference several classic moments from the classic Bruce Willis flick. We can only hope for a cameo from the film's Reginald VelJohnson, who was also memorably an ABC sitcom star on Family Matters. The episode is set to air on ABC on Wednesday, December 12, at 8:00 p.m. ET.

The episode's title, as some may have guessed, is a reference to the infamous line used by John McClane in the television edit of the film. Executive producer Adam F. Goldberg added that audiences will see that iconic line recreated in the episode, and explained how the moment was inspired by one of his actual childhood experiences.

Goldberg also said that he believes Die Hard to be the "best Christmas movie of all time," so don't be surprised if someone declares that semi-hot take. The episode's underlying theme is meant to show various ways that families can celebrate the holidays, as well as to honor the Bruce Willis-led action film's 30th anniversary. It will certainly be interesting to see how these "rip-off" concepts will honor the film, and what surprise cameos may happen.

The Die Hard tribute is just the latest 80s reference from The Goldbergs, which has made headlines in the past with some other iconic genre movie homages. More recently, the show convinced the original Freddy Krueger actor Robert Englund to reprise his role as the horror icon. The Goldbergs also got a lot of fan love for its tribute to Spaceballs, which featured Rick Moranis making a rare TV return as the voice of Dark Helmet.

Nobody is ready for Halloween quite like ABC's The Goldbergs. The 1980s-embracing sitcom has pulled out the stops for a magnificently nightmarish cameo from Freddy Krueger himself. Below, you'll see the first shots from Robert Englund's big return as the Bastard Son of 100 Maniacs. Run, Beverly, run!

This truly is the most magical time of year...for horror fans. While Robert Englund had previously claimed he was getting too old to get back into the Freddy makeup, that hasn't proven true. Of course, The Goldbergs likely won't make him go through any physically taxing stunts during the episode "Mister Knifey-Hands." No cartwheels and handstands for this guy.

In the episode, Adam is allowed to watch Nightmare on Elm Street by Jackie' parents, despite Beverly having qualms against it. It leads to a tiff between the families, but it's Beverly who gets plagued by nightmares of Springwood, Ohio's finest.

Is it just me, or does it look like he's rocking the face someone makes when they've just farted and they don't want you walking behind them? It's very much a "You do NOT want to go in there, trust me." Granted, because it's Freddy, it might be a pile of corpses rather than fart gas. But the face still implies something is up.

Freddy has always been at home in suburbia, given that's where most of his victims lived in the original flicks. But maybe don't expect to see other familiar locations like the boiler rooms that Freddy loves to creep around in. But maybe do expect to see him out standing in a field?

If Freddy was going after the Children of the Corn, that might be a fun tie-in to one of the lesser-appreciated Stephen King stories and film adaptations. Or maybe not.

According to the episode synopsis, Beverly's nightmare will teach her an important lesson about Adam and Jackie's relationship. It doesn't say, however, whether or not she actually survives her encounter with Freddy. She's in images for the following episodes, though, so...spoilers, I guess.

Robert Englund hasn't appeared in an Elm Street-related film as Freddy Krueger since 2003's Freddy vs. Jason. However, he did don the makeup again for the documentary Nightmares in the Makeup Chair, which was due to release this year. And in case anyone wondered who he'd like to see take the mantle as Freddy, his vote goes to Kevin Bacon taking on the iconic role.

As awesome as it is to see Robert Englund back as Freddy, I am so impressed that The Goldbergs also pulled those girls into the episode. It's not like it's a deep-cut reference, but it's a great touch. Now if Barry could just turn into a cockroach to mimic the scene in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, that would be perfect.

This final shot could possibly be setting up a gag where it's actually Freddy who is having the nightmare. (A joke that was actually used in Dokken's "Dream Warriors" music video.) Unless Beverly wakes up next to Freddy in bed, rather than next to Murray. Which could be a good or a bad thing, depending on the morning.

The Goldbergs is preparing for its Halloween episode, and they have booked a particularly frightening guest star. Taking to Twitter to promote the special installment of the series, the show has shared a video clip featuring two of the episode's stars. In it, actress Wendi McLendon-Covey can be seen seemingly in-character as Goldberg matriarch Wendy, as she introduces viewers to the series' frightening special guest: Freddy Krueger! That's right! Robert Englund is in full makeup as the infamous horror movie character! Making it all the more-headline worthy is that back in 2017, the actor expressed hesitance about reprising the role for a movie. Another thing worthy of note is how stellar the special effects makeup is. CGI still does not create such a realistic result. It may not be a return to the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, but it is still very exciting for fans of the horror franchise.

It has been almost 15 years since Robert Englund portrayed Freddy Krueger in a movie. That happened in 2003's Freddy vs. Jason. In 2010, the original film was remade with Rooney Mara in the lead, although Jackie Earle Haley took on the role of Krueger. With The Goldbergs' Adam love of pop culture, you can bet he will be involved with the appearance of Freddy Krueger.

The Goldbergs is set in the '1980s, which puts it around the time the first A Nightmare on Elm Street was released (which was 1984). Could the evil Krueger be haunting Adam's nightmares? Well, it seems a possibility. The promo is a significant reveal, and it looks like The Goldbergs will not be holding back on Robert Englund bringing Freddy Krueger back to life.

For The Goldbergs to land Robert Englund reprising his infamous role is a pretty big deal. Given that the show is a comedy, it would be highly unlikely that the show's take on Freddy Krueger will be as terrifying as the horror franchise's. Could donning the makeup spark renewed interest in a potential remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street with Englund reprising the role of Krueger? It has been eight years since the 2010 remake, which means a million in Hollywood years.

If it does, fans could potentially have The Goldbergs to thank for it. Interest in reviving the franchise would surge even more if the fan favorite were back in the role. While 15 years is an extensive time to be away from a role, based on the clip Robert Englund is able to pick up exactly where he left off.

The Goldbergs will return for its sixth season premiere on Wednesday, September 26 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. The Halloween episode featuring Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger should air sometime in October. May the Ninth be with you! In a slightly belated nod to Star Wars Day, ABC's The Goldbergs will be paying tribute to not just one, but two Star Wars-related movies for next week's episode. The sitcom will raise its lightsaber in celebration of the Star Wars series for the installment "Spaceballs," which also pokes fun at Mel Brooks' popular spoof of the space saga. Here is what we know about the intergalactic episode of The Goldbergs.

In a galaxy not so far away, politics and pop culture will collide thanks to an understandable misunderstanding. In the episode, Adam goes to dinner with his girlfriend Jackie and her parents, and whenever the subject of then-President Ronal Reagan's Star Wars defense system comes up, Adam mistakes it for being one about the movie, Thereafter, Adam humiliates himself with a breathless monologue about the franchise, replete with impressions and plot summaries.

Pop culture fans can certainly feel Adam's pain. We have all been there at one point or another. As hinted at in this story's opening line, the Star Wars episode will not air on Star Wars Day, which is celebrated on May 4. Due to the fact that The Goldbergs airs on Wednesdays, that would have been impossible anyway. Instead, The Goldbergs will instead air in its normal Wednesday time slot on May 9, which will precede the release of the latest installment in the space-faring movie franchise, Solo: A Star Wars Story; the Han Solo origin story hits theaters on May 25.

Yes, Disney owns ABC and Lucasfilm, which means they own the Star Wars franchise. But just in case you are wondering if Disney unnecessarily arranged this special episode of The Goldbergs to promote the release of the sure-to-be blockbuster Solo, you can rest assured it has not. The Goldbergs' creator and executive producer, Adam F. Goldberg is a huge Star Wars fan. You need to look no further than his first script, Fanboys, for proof. The 2009 film focuses on a group of Star Wars fans who embark on a cross-country road trip to George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch so that their terminally ill friend can see Star Wars: Episode 1 -- The Phantom Menace before he passes away. I don't know about you, but there are plenty of people out there who would rather watch The Goldbergs than Phantom Menace again.

Not that Adam F. Goldberg hasn't made lots of other direct references to Star Wars on this sitcom in the past. Back in Season 1, the show recreated the release day opening for Return of the Jedi. And one episode reminded everyone how awkwardly horrible the Star Wars Holiday Special was, even though it gave the world Boba Fett and should be forgiven for all its sins.

The buzz surrounding a potential spinoff of the popular ABC comedy The Goldbergs has been floating around for a while now. After a bit of back and forth, the untitled spinoff has been given the official green-light by ABC, which put in a straight-to-series order. They must mean business this time, right? Here is what we know so far, including what's different from the previous version.

Like The Goldbergs, the comedic follow-up will take place in the past; the 1990s, to be exact. The entertaining teaching staff of William Penn Academy will be the focus here, including Principal Glascott (Tim Meadows), Coach Mellor (Bryan Callen), and Lainey Lewis (AJ Michalka). All of them are adored by their students, despite their distinct quirks and crazy non-school lives. Audiences are familiar with them, too, as each of the characters also appears on The Goldbergs proper.

The Goldbergs spinoff almost didn't happen. ABC produced a pilot, then-titled Schooled, which focused on Tim Meadows' character and his sister Lucy, played by Nia Long. The network ended up passing on the project for its 2017-2018 broadcast season, despite it reportedly testing highly. Fans of The Goldbergs got to see the full pilot when it aired during the series' timeslot back in late January. It apparently did well enough with general audiences as well, because fast-forward to April, and ABC is singing a different tune about the project's future.

It is clear from ABC's announcement that there will be changes from the original spinoff pilot that aired in January. Due to her commitment to the CBS drama NCIS: Los Angeles, Nia Long will not be reprising her role as Principal Glascott's sister. It is unclear if they will recast the character, or those of daughters Felicia (Rachel Crow) and Gigi (Summer Parker), who played a central role in the pilot. Older daughter Felicia was the narrator of the original pilot, with Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer lending her vocal talents as Adult Felicia. Only time will tell how the spinoff will address the absence of Principal Glascott's family, or if they will be involved after all.

New to the cast of the green-lit spinoff is AJ Michalka, who will return as her character Lainey Lewis from The Goldbergs. There were no further details on Lainey's specific role at the school. ABC's synopsis indicates she will be one of the teachers, though the class she will be teaching has not been disclosed. Michalka is currently starring in the fifth season of The Goldbergs in a recurring capacity.

One Goldbergs star won't be around as much in Season 5, but it's not as though fans of the series didn't see this one coming. AJ Michalka, who plays Barry's girlfriend Lainey, has been demoted from the title of series regular ahead of the show's return this fall. Here's what we know regarding the change-up, and how the series will be affected by this move going forward.

As The Goldbergs showed in the Season 4 finale, Lainey is headed off to college in Savannah, Georgia, and won't be around while Barry remains in high school. Considering her character will be far away, it seems logical that AJ Michalka's role has been reduced ahead of Season 5, although there's still a chance of Lainey appearing at points throughout the season. Executive producer and Stephen King fan Adam F. Goldberg tells TVLine that Michalka has been present for some table reads for episodes in the upcoming season, so it's not as though the show is writing her off completely.

As to what this means for Lainey and Barry's relationship on The Goldbergs remains to be seen. The two were on good terms when Season 4 ended, and while it didn't appear as though a long distance relationship is in the cards, the fact that Lainey will be appearing in future episodes would appear to indicate the two will have some sort of interaction in Season 5. Hopefully it isn't one of those heartbreaking moments where Lainey returns home and has to awkwardly break the news to Barry that she's met someone else while she was away.

AJ Michalka's demotion comes almost a month after the news that Erica's beau, Geoff Schwartz aka actor Sam Lerner, has been upgraded to a series regular ahead of Season 5. As for what Michalka has lined up for her free time outside of guest roles The Goldbergs, the actress has linked back up with her sister Aly Michalka and the two are bringing back their pop musical act Aly and AJ. The two are resurrecting their musical careers following a ten-year hiatus, and recently released a new song, which can be heard below:

The Goldbergs will return for Season 5 on September 27th at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. With a spin-off already in the works, fans can hope the upcoming season is just as good as the one's past. The great television doesn't begin and end with The Goldbergs however, as we are about to enter peak season for great television programming. There aren't very many guarantees when it comes to modern primetime TV, but one of the most dependable notions has been that ABC's Wednesday night comedy block offers the most successful batch of laugh-ready shows that a normal week has to offer. Unfortunately, things are looking pretty grim all over, with network veteran Modern Family coming as close as possible to its worst numbers since premiering back in 2009. And the other comedies don't have much more to brag about.

Let's start with Modern Family, whose ensemble cast is so large that contract negotiations could be the key deciding factor in ABC granting the series a Season 9. In years past, there wasn't much worry about renewals, since Modern Family has long been one of ABC's most popular series in both total viewership and in the key demographic of adults 18-49. But Wednesday night's episode, "Frank's Wedding," is the biggest sign yet that the family comedy is on its weakest legs ever.

The episode was watched by 6.16 million people, according to TV By the Numbers, which is the new second-smallest audience that Modern Family has ever attracted for its Live+Same Day stats. That series-low viewership was only recorded a few weeks ago, too, so it's not some anomaly. More importantly for the network's sake, Modern Family recorded its lowest demo rating of its eight-season run with a 1.8; it's a result that lots of lesser-watched shows would kill for, mind you, but not at all impressive for a series that was easily earning between 3.0-4.0 ratings just two years ago. TV viewership is dropping all around, of course, and Modern Family's delayed viewing numbers are still pretty solid, but also not as big as they used to be.

Meanwhile, Blackish is facing some growing pains of its own, as its latest episode ("What Lies Beneath") also drew the series' second lowest viewership, with 4.57 million people tuning in. It only tops another Season 3 episode which aired back in December. Things don't get better on the key demo front, either, as the 1.3 rating was Blackish's series low. The highly acclaimed series, which took some recent backlash for a guest appearance by Chris Brown, hasn't been renewed for Season 4 yet, but ABC tends to hold off on those decisions.

The Goldbergs started off the night with an audience of 5.6 million people, which isn't so great for the '80s comedy, but still beats out most of its Season 1 numbers. However, the 1.5 demo rating matches The Goldberg's series low, which was already matched a couple of times this season. The clear winner for the night, though, was Speechless by default of being a freshman series and not having a lot of comparison data. Its demo rating of 1.3 was a series low, technically, but its more of a steady result than a drooping one, similar to how its 4.75 million viewers are on the low end of the viewership spectrum, but still fairly consistent.

As networks head down the final stretch from May Sweeps to season finales, we'll be keeping an eye on ABC's comedy block to see if any big changes are made for next season. Few series capture the beauty that is 80s pop culture better than ABC's The Goldbergs. Adam F. Goldberg's semi-autobiographical sitcom has tackled many beloved movies in its four seasons, and this week's episode, "The Kara-te Kid," is no exception. Its nod to Karate Kid is reason enough to tune in tonight, but there's another reason Goldbergs fans won't want to miss this one. Beyond capturing the magic of the classic 80s underdog story, The Goldbergs will address a running gag on the show.

This is where it gets just a little bit spoilery. I'm not going to go into major plot points about what happens in the episode. And the referenced running gag is mentioned in ABC's official episode description, so you may already be aware. If not, and you'd prefer not to know, please skip this article and watch The Goldbergs on ABC tonight. It's a good one.

Moving on...

In "The Kara-te Kid," Adam will fight his name-nemesis, "other Adam Goldberg." This has been a bit of a running gag in the series, and is presumably connected to the real-life name confusion between the series' creator and the actor by the same name, Adam Goldberg, the latter of whom you may recall from such films as Dazed and Confused and Saving Private Ryan, and more recently, FX's excellent drama series, Fargo.

In case you're unfamiliar with this situation, actor Adam Goldberg has nothing to do with The Goldbergs and no relation to its creator, apart from the name similarity. That the same-name situation has apparently caused confusion has not gone unnoticed or unaddressed by either Adam Goldberg, thanks to social media. The two went back and forth on Twitter over it a while back, with things seemingly getting mildly heated. It looks to be a point of irritation or inconvenience for at least one -- if not both -- of them that they're both in the same industry, with the same name.

The Goldberg's main character -- played by Sean Giambrone -- also being named Adam Goldberg adds another amusing layer to this situation, so it seems only too fitting that an "other Adam Goldberg" managed to make his way into The Goldbergs as an occasionally referenced character. In the Goldbergs-verse (Goldverse?), other-Adam Goldberg is lead character Adam's "name-nemesis." They go to the same school and sometimes get confused for one another.

If you were unaware that The Goldbergs creator shared a name with a notable actor, the joke still works on its own, as one kid having the same name as another kid at school is the kind of thing that might happen to two unlucky kids. It's actually a decent joke to work into a sitcom on its own, even if it weren't rooted in reality, at least a little bit. But given that this show thrives in finding the humor in Adam Goldberg's actual life, it's only fitting -- and all the funnier -- that there appears to be a history with this particular gag.

Given the name drops of "other Adam Goldberg" in previous episodes, the series seemed ripe to feature the character in the the show, and what better way to do that than a Karate Kid episode. Again, without going into any plot specifics beyond what's already out there, expect a lot of references from the beloved Ralph Macchio film, along with the typical shenanigans we've come to know and appreciate from this lovable family.

"The Kara-te Kid" falls in line as one of the The Goldberg's best (around!). It's been evident over the last couple of seasons that this series has hit its stride, finding the right balance of humor and nostalgia, as well as a mixture of stand-alone stories, and serialized elements. The ABC comedy has also done well in establishing characters that may be a bit over-the-top* at times, but are also well worth caring about. Case in point for tonight's episode of The Goldbergs, not only does the recurring other-Adam-Goldberg gag get addressed, but the situation between Erica and Geoff is also worked in to the B-story, adding a light layer of humor and emotion to episode. The well for 80s nostalgia may eventually run dry for The Goldbergs, but from the last couple of seasons, all evidence points to that not happening any time soon, as the comedy remains one of the better half-hours on TV.

Rowan Blanchard has secured a new role on television. It's a good thing too, seeing as Girl Meets World is officially dead and gone, and the actress was going to need something new sooner or later. The young actress, who not too long ago wrote a passionate farewell to the aforementioned show, will now have a spot on the ABC series The Goldbergs as a guest star.

Rowan is confirmed to appear on at least one upcoming episode during Season 4 of The Goldbergs. Rowan will play an editor of William Penn Academy's student-run sci-fi/fantasy magazine. The role sounds pretty quirky and nerdy, which would fall in line with the same characteristics portrayed by Riley Matthews, the fictional character portrayed by Rowan Blanchard on Girl Meets World. It is unclear if her role will be a one-off or if the show will maybe feature her down the line. For now, her episode is scheduled to premiere sometime in either late winter or early this coming spring.

It appears Rowan Blanchard isn't having trouble finding more roles in Hollywood following the cancellation of Girl Meets World. As TV Line mentions, Rowan has a couple film appearances coming up as well. Rowan will first appear in the upcoming sci-fi fantasy film A World Away, which is set to premiere this year. Blanchard will star in the film as Jessica, who travels with five other friends to the Grand Canyon but somehow ends up in another world. She is also slated to appear in the popular Madeleine L'Engle novel turned Disney film A Wrinkle In Time, although her role for the film has yet to be revealed. Weirdly enough, both films seem to have similarities in their plot, so maybe fantasy and sci-fi is the new genre for Rowan Blanchard?

As for Girl Meets World, producers of Girl Meets World have been hopeful they can find another network to bring back the show, although no new information has come to light in the past month since that announcement. The series started strong with a little over 5 million viewers in its pilot episode, but the numbers soon dwindled to a little under 1.5 million, and the show was canceled. While those numbers aren't awful and would be considered a decent performer on some networks, it doesn't seem like something Netflix (who has brought back many a show in recent years) or another streaming service would be interested in revitalizing considering the small viewership. Then again, Netflix has saved plenty of other shows, so who knows really?

What's the past is the past, though, and we should be happy that Rowan Blanchard will once again find herself on television on a hot show like The Goldbergs! The ABC comedy has been on fire since its premiere and that flame hasn't been extinguished as the series has moved forward, and a spinoff is even in the works at the network. The show is currently running Season 4, so expect to see Rowan at William Penn's Academy sooner than later, and be sure to check out the other show's premiering this month with our handy midseason premiere guide.

After one of TV's shorter winter breaks, The Goldbergs returned to its Season 4 hijinks tonight with an episode that paid homage to the classic film Dead Poets Society. But let's skip ahead, when the 1980s-flavored comedy will at last take on that most darkest of knights, Batman, for an upcoming episode that will be directed by - you guessed it - Bat-fanatic filmmaker Kevin Smith. Sounds like a match made in heaven, or at least in a cleaner area of Gotham City.

While I would give anything to see Jeff Garlin's Murray Goldberg donning a film-specific Batman costume for the episode, that's not something that has been confirmed. What we do know is that the episode will be called "The Dynamic Duo," and that it will focus on the hype surrounding the initial release of Batman, Tim Burton's 1989 classic. Will we see Barry and Adam waiting in a long line for tickets? Will Pops show everyone how a grappling hook works? Will Beverly create a dance for Prince's Batman theme? Whatever happens will surely be hilarious for everyone. Well, except maybe one person who isn't big on smiles.

It was announced some months back that Kevin Smith had been tapped for a directing gig on The Goldbergs, but information about the subject matter wasn't disclosed. This reveal makes all the sense in the world, considering Smith hosts a Batman-themed podcast, has written for DC Comics several times, and is fresh off of directing episodes of both The Flash and Supergirl. And when talking to IGN about the episode, Smith hinted that maybe it isn't just that one Batman that we'll get to see referenced.

Would it be the most out of place wish in the world for Adam West to make a surprise appearance in the episode as the ticket taker at the movie theater? Of course, that's based solely on my own prediction about the episode, so it probably won't happen. But I'll put the signal out, just in case.

Also speaking with IGN, creator Adam F. Goldberg said that he's been a huge fan of Kevin Smith's for years, and he says Smith is the best person to bring the show's Batman episode to life. He even copped to waiting in lines to get Bluntman and Chronic comics signed. So when can we expect Goldberg to bring those superheroes to live-action?

Hit TV comedies aren't quite as common as they used to be, so when a show hits audiences in a big way, it's only smart to try and build upon that fanbase as much as possible. Such a thing is happening over at ABC, where the acid-washed wheels are turning on a spinoff of the pop culture-embracing sitcom The Goldbergs. And it's going to be about that most morally something-or-other of characters, Coach Rick Mellor.

A spinoff dedicated to Coach Rick has earned itself a script commitment with penalties attached at ABC, which isn't a guarantee of a series order by any stretch, but it's a good sign. The plot would shift forward to the 1990s, where two male high school teachers end up as unlikely parent figures for the three misbehaving children of the school's secretary. It sounds like a sitcom right out of the 1990s - or the 1980s if we're solely looking at the My Two Dads aspect - and I'm totally on board. Bring in HBO's Vice Principals and I'm even more into it.

The 1980s-geared comedy The Goldbergs has been winning over audiences for more than three seasons now, and its focused approach to that bygone decade lends itself well to an expanded universe. Especially with such a big change as far as the central characters go. It seems like only good things could come from taking his brand of humor outside the family home and inserting it into the world of the manners-challenged coach, as played by Bryan Callen of madTV and tons of other shows and movies. He can lead a comedy.

According to THR, Goldbergs creator and namesake Adam F. Goldberg is writing the script for the new project alongside Goldbergs executive producer Mark Firek. Happy Madison execs Doug Robinson and Seth Gordon would be executive producing, just as they do on the flagship series. Goldberg also has Jenna Elfman's return to network TV, Imaginary Mary, coming in the midseason, so it's tough to say when this potential new comedy would go into high gear.

The Goldbergs has been pretty solid on the ratings front, keeping more steady with previous seasons than many other network shows, and its DVR numbers are also consistently winning. And it's perhaps not all that surprising that Bryan Callen's Coach Rick is at the center of a potential spinoff. He started showing up more in the back end of Season 3, and he's already been in two of Season 4's five episodes that have aired, so the writers definitely like him, and all signs point to viewers agreeing. The Goldbergs is known for devoting episodes to beloved segments of the entertainment spectrum, such as Stephen King and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, among many other things. One can only guess (and repeatedly dream about) how the 1990s will enter into this new project.

For anyone who grew up at any point in the 1980s, there are few places on TV more hilariously familiar than The Goldbergs, which continues to craft some of the sweetest episodic pop culture homages imaginable. Wednesday night's episode was all about show creator Adam F. Goldberg's fascination with iconic author Stephen King, giving Goldberg the perfect opportunity to share an awesome little story about how far back his fandom goes.

Everything about this is pretty incredible. Adam F. Goldberg, as his TV comedy has proven time and again, has an affection for entertainment that rivals most people's affinity for food and oxygen, and it would be hard to find a better example of that unbounded joy than his prepubescent self attempting to loop Stephen King into the guest list watching him reach manhood at his Bar Mitzvah. That takes chutzpah, Constant Readers. And in case you can't read King's response too clearly on the Twitter post, he's what it says.

Being called a "neat kid" is almost laughable from an adult point of view, but I imagine not even the love of Adam F. Goldberg's parents meant as much to him at that time than Stephen King's opinion. Just getting an autograph would have been the bee's knees, but a three-sentence personal note is the stuff of legend, and I am so very envious that my desk doesn't have such an incredible adornment.

If Stephen King was anything like Bill Murray, he'd have definitely shown up for Goldberg's Bar Mitzvah, probably with a drink in hand. And then he'd have gone to a bunch of other Bar Mitzvahs and baseball games and pool parties and whatever else was happening in town. But then if King was more like Murray, I don't imagine the Master of Horror distinction would have come quite so easily.

It's too bad King himself didn't get to make an appearance on The Goldbergs, which has landed some stellar guest stars in the past. ("Weird" Al back in 1980s mode? Yes, please.) But even though the author isn't showing his face on the small screen too much in the near future, TV will still be filled with Stephen King adaptations, including the long-awaited Dark Tower series, as well as shows based on the creature thriller The Mist and the cat-and-mouse thriller Mr. Mercedes. (And that's not counting the handful of new movies in development that are based on his works.)

The Goldbergs airs new episodes and transports us back to our childhoods (and possibly to The Upside Down) every Wednesday night on ABC. No killer clowns allowed, though.

If there was a major TV hit in the summer of 2016, it was probably Stranger Things. The Netflix series had unprecedented success---at least in terms of viral potential, as Netflix doesn't actually release ratings. And now one major network TV show really, really wants a Stranger Things crossover. That TV series is none other than ABC's The Goldbergs, a comedy set in the 1980s that nods at pop culture quite a bit. Here's why Goldbergs showrunner Adam F. Goldberg thinks the idea isn't so far-fetched, at all.

The Season 4 premiere of The Goldbergs is set to hit the schedule tonight, so the entire season hasn't been written or even necessarily plotted out at this point. Goldberg has gotten plenty of crossover-type episodes off of the ground at this point; one might even call him gifted at the task. However, because a Stranger Things crossover is far more relevant to today's culture and a second season is currently being commissioned at Netflix, this might be more difficult to pull off than, say, a Ferris Bueller's Day Off crossover. Goldberg told TV Line that he does know some of the people involved with Stranger Things and he has talked to them about his ideas, which should theoretically give him a leg up.

Now, as to how this would work, the word is still out. So far, The Goldbergs has spent a lot of time referencing various aspects of eighties culture, and has even aired specific episodes themed around popular movies that came out in the eighties. Regardless, because Stranger Things is a modern day show that happens to be set in the eighties---similar to The Goldbergs---you would think that any references to the Netflix series would have to be a whole lot subtler. The Goldbergs really couldn't pay homage to Stranger Things in the same way the show has nodded at eighties culture. However, could a Stranger Things character show up on The Goldbergs? Or could an episode of The Goldbergs mimic an episode of Stranger Things? I see no reason why not.

While we wait to find out whether or not Stranger Things will be a part of The Goldberg's future, new episodes of the ABC comedy are already set to feature other fun throwbacks. For instance, the Season 4 opener is expected to feature some nods to The Breakfast Club.
